Excellent food and top notch service. I'm not easily impressed but this place was very surprising. Well thought out wine list, creative use of the space, attention to detail in every element. A great example of how Melbourne does hospitality so well.
This place was recommended to me by a friend for my birthday dinner. I'm so happy I changed venues last minute! The food was amazing, the service was great! I ordered the tagliatelle which you could tell was homemade it melted in my mouth.. Everyone wanted to try it! My friend had the Ox dish which was also-amazing.. Quality food. Everyone was very accommodating to my table, my friends loved it. Music was also great.. I am definitely going back ! Thank you for a successful birthday dinner:)
Cracking food and the table service is fantastic. The bar upstairs has great DJs and music and the bar staff are friendly and professional. Try the braised lamb or the mussel linguini.
Great atmosphere, cool music, neat and clean, super friendly and helpful staff, reasonably priced, great food, great cocktails. Highly recommend!
Wonderful customer service!! I would highly recommend
Great space to sit and relax over lunch. Lovely food from the sharing menu topped off with a nice wine. Who could ask for more!
What a great menu and wine list just lock me in every weekend
Great vibe & venue with one of the best pizza"s in town.
Amazing food and atmosphere! The oysters were so fresh and the Pumpkin Ravioli was a great dish.
Amazing food every time. Great atmosphere. Lovely staff.
Great service from the waitress looking after our group. Steak was perfect
Had the oysters to start.. then possibly the most delicious suckling pig panini. Great place for a casual lunch and at a reasonable price!
Food is fabulous, staff are amazing, manager is cool, always a pleasant experience.
We had the best waitress by the name of Courtney, she was absolutely lovely. She was very attentive, friendly and socialable. We will be back x
Lovely place. Great food, great service, great atmosphere.
The place to be seen on a Friday Night! Upstairs is wonderful if you want some quiet to talk and lounge about. Downstairs is full of Action!
Excellent staff service, lamb special was delicious
had my birthday event at royal saxon and had an excellent night. venue was amazing and the girls i spoke to when organising it were extremely lovely and very helpful. will be back!
Very good customer service!
Great food, wine & service!
The food is generally pretty good and I love the $10 pizza Tuesdays but $5 for a glass of Coke?! It's cheaper to have beer than a soft drink for lunch! Ouch.
Not your average pub. Not your average pub food.
Excellent service from experienced and competent staff. The fairly brief menu and limited description does no justice to the beautifully presented dishes and fantastic quality of ingredients.
We shared a number of starters - Portarlington Mussels, Oysters, Duck & Apricot Rillette, Semolina Dusted Calimari and Zucchini Flowers - all magnificent.
Stand out mains included the Herb & Parmesan crumbed Pork Coletta with fennel, green almonds & orange salad and the Ora King Salmon with BBQ Cucumber, Asparagus, Jerusalem Artichoke & Broad Beans.
Mains are quite generous in size and most definitely generous in flavours!
A thoughtful but short wine list has good offerings and there are quite a number of good beers available.
Come again to have the chocolate tiramisu and coffee. Better experience than last time.
Royal Saxon at Richmond. Tuesday night is pizza night. Yeah $10 pizza is definitely a good price for the night. Treat myself with a prawn pizza and scallops. I like the design of the restaurant and dark lighting a perfect place for a late night drink. They also have a outdoor balcony area with nice outdoor setting. A good place to catch up with friends.
⭐️4.5 stars⭐️
Headed to the Royal Saxon on a Saturday night for a birthday celebration. We started the night in the restaurant before heading upstairs to the dance floor where the fun continued.
What we ordered: Potato Pizza, Margherita Pizza, Pumpkin Pizza, Spicy Salami Pizza & Calamari. The food was fantastic, it was definitely above our expectations. The base of every Pizza was thin and crusty combined with a generous amount of toppings. Given the atmosphere and friendly service, I think being a regular at the Royal Saxon wouldn’t hurt!
Booked a table for 10 for my birthday dinner, when we arrived there had been a mix up with the booking but our waiter Christian sorted it out within 5 minutes. Food was delicious as usual, amazing service all night, the staff there are all great
Royal Saxon is a really great bar split up into 2 levels and a back courtyard. I went for a quick pre drink with Bearabbit and our partners. The bar offers a good space which is very inviting.
Mulled wine was on offer and it was really good with a nice spice and zest. A great spot to come for after work drinks or a weekend visit, I highly recommend.
Dropped by for a quick drink with Simmyeats.Melb and our respective partners while waiting for our table to be ready at another place, and I wished we could stay longer. The mulled wine was amazing! We guessed that it was going to be good after noticing that it was being cooked in a slow cooker, and we were right. Aromatic, and brimming with zesty and piquant flavours from the spices.
While the place was buzzing on a Saturday night, service remained prompt and friendly. Well worth a return visit for the mulled wine, and to try out the food menu.
Great place for dinner. Have been here a couple of times now and the meals did not disappoint and lovely presentation. Staff were very polite and attentive.

The Royal Saxon in Richmond is more than just a bar to us, we feel that it should also be recognised not only for their stunning drinks selection and fun vibe, but also for their mouthwateringly delicious menu by the newly appointed and very talented Head Chef Thiago Miranda (Electrolux Australian Young Chef 2016 Finalist and former Head chef at Church Street Enoteca).
We were at Royal Saxons for dinner and what a fun night it was!
For the starters, we had the herb and lemon ricotta tortellini with pea veloute and lemon balm, and the confit duck potato gnocchi. My favorite amongst these two plates was the tortellini which stood out and tasted delicious - I was surprised that the pea veloute did not overpower the other elements of the plate! 💚
For the mains, we had the pork belly and smoked pork tenderloin, and barramundi with mussels, turnips, mushroom consommé and lemon verbena. For me, I loved the pork belly to bits as it was cooked to perfection, the skin crackled and the meat was so soft and juicy - it was so heavenly! The barramundi was a close contender with the meat being also cooked perfectly and the mushroom consommé adding additional flavors to it!
Finally dessert! We had the chocolate parfait, honey comb and cream fraiche, and the goat’s curd panna cotta with strawberry sorbet and basil. If you’re after a heavy dessert, the chocolate parfait would be the right choice with its rich taste and added sweetness from the honey comb! For a light dessert, the panna cotta is the one to go for with its beautiful texture and softness!
Thanks Royal Saxon for such a wonderful night and we will be back to conquer your pizzas next! 😘
I have been here before but only for drinks. Last time I wasn’t very happy with the service it took ages for the drinks to come out. Went for lunch today and the service was great. Food was even better. I had the salmon with roasted broccoli which came in same kind of vinegar. A-H-MAZING! The chips were yummy too but would be better with some fancier aioli. Not cheap though.
Great ambience on Melbourne Cup day. Service did not suffer either.
Great selection of wine and snacks, even coffee afterwards for those of us who have to keep going once the horses were done racing.
Will be back here for food :)
When here for a friends bday & LOVED their wood fire pizza so had to come back for more. I’m all for the keep it simple method when it comes to pizza and their pizzas are simple, full of flavour and reasonably priced. I loved the Margarita, the tomato sauce packs flavour & feels like when I was back in Italy, the fresh mozzarella is to die for. Head over for a pizza & grab a drink while your at it, I say!

Dined here a couple of days ago with my parents. And was pleasantly suprised at the quality of food and service we received on a wet Monday. The fitout inside is the perfect balance of pub meats modern dining with wide open space with tables and a neat tidy set up of chairs for those who are more interested in having a meal. The wine list is fairly good with a good balance of wines of local growers aswell as international varietals. The menu layout had me drooling. I found it hard to select a dish because there were at least 5 or 6 options i could have eaten. The menu is large enough without being over the top. I elected to go with a mushroom and artichoke pie and it was without a doubt one of the best pub meals I have ever had. Also close to the best pie I've ever had. I cannot wait to return and sample some more items as unfortunately I was under the weather and couldnt go for more than one course. Well done everyone no wonder you have such a good reputation. From staff to food I could not recommend higher.
It was a little while back that we came to Royal Saxon Fira quick pizza and a drink before teaming up to Chapel street for on. I'd been here for a charity trivia afternoon and enjoyed the ensuing entertainment. Tonight it was a little quieter but the pizza was no less rewarding with a nicely cooked base. Base was a little thicker than a traditional Italian and toppings more generous to boot. Always a disagreement around the base of pizza in our household but tonight it suited me more than she.
Came to Royal Saxon on Saturday night for a birthday and never in my life have I felt so old. There I was waiting in lines. That never happened in my glorious youth. Once we finally got inside it was dark and loud. We didn't eat but it had a fun atmosphere and was full of beautiful people having a few drinks. I've previously attended an afternoon engagement party here on the top floor which you are able to hire out for private functions. It has quite a nice ambiance in the day time with the balcony opening up that space. Staff are friendly and it's a great central location. Would recommend for an event
I have visited the Royal Saxon on several occasions for work lunch and I have ordered the Nduja salami (hot), red onion, tomato and scamorza bianco pizza every time as it's quite tasty. So I can personally vouch for this meal if you happen to be looking at the menu and struggling to find a dish that you might enjoy.
The service is faultless and the staff are lovely. So you will be looked after and not feel forgotten as with some experiences this has been a bad habit for some venues I have been to.
The design of the Royal Saxon is quite interesting. You feel comfortable walking in and cosy with great emphasis on space. It's neatly laid out and modern as well.
You won't feel lonely here, it can get quite busy. They have a bar if you feel like something to drink as well.
If you like Italian food than the meals will appeal to you, I haven't tried enough of the menu to highly recommend the food here, but take the risk with the pizzas, they haven't disappointed me yet.
There's a lot more to the Royal Saxon with an outside and upstairs area which I have yet to explore, but as it stands, my experience has been pleasant and haven't had a reason yet for not recommending this place.
Royal Saxon is a Richmond institution. High end dining and a great menu. Pizza pasta mains and starters. A great bar and an awesome fit out.
My friends and I stopped here for a drink after The Book of Mormon because they have a friend that runs the bar. I've been craving mulled wine for a long time and I was excited that they had a cooker but I was disappointed that we had to wait for an hour before it was ready🍷. I even waited a bit after my friend's left so I could have it. The mulled wine was delicious and worth the wait but it was very hot so I was worried that the alcohol might have been cooked out of it hahaha. The food looked good but I didn't have any because it was a bit early for dinner and I was craving Chinese food from Box Hill. The people working here were very friendly. With Anita.
I've only been here for drinks before so can't speak for the food (however from the reviews that may change!) but overall I love this place. Great spot for a drink or two with friends on the weekends. Good venue that can break up the crowd with an upstairs and an outside area. Big fan.
Expensive Delicious Habit.

I had only ever visited for a drink, so I was interested to try the food at Royal Saxon! I'll save you the suspense now- it was very good! We started with cocktails which were really really good. Everyone was happy with their food- the prawn pizza in particular was delish. A versatile space with something for everyone.
My girlfriend and I were absolutely astounded by the food at Royal Saxon, the cured meats board was amazing to say the least and the buffalo mozzarella was melt in the mouth. We also shared a margarita pizza and that was just as good the base was thin yet substantial the homemade sauce was just like the passata we make at home. The cocktails topped off our night and the staff were fantastic. I cannot fault this place and I cant wait to go back!
Their pizza was great, probably the best in the area. Their sweet potato chips were also amazing, very crunchy. Their pasta wasn't too shabby. It didn't look appealing at the start but it tasted good. The portion was slightly smaller than i thought tho and the price might slightly be on the higher end. Overall it was a great experience.
I love a good restaurant with a good decore and this defiantly provides you with that. The gentlemen that greated us and sat us down was very friendly. However the table service was very poor. The man that took our orders was not friendly nor looked like he wanted to be there. The pizza was very tasty and i just admit i love a good thin and crispy crust. However it did lack sauce and toppings. The sweet potato fries are a must have, one of the best in town. While your there you have to visit the upstairs bar. The bartenders are very talented and know just how to make a perfect drink.
Royal Saxon is a gastro-pub located on Church Street in the heart of Richmond with a relaxed atmosphere and an extensive wine list, so they could also be considered a bar?
We were here tonight with a larger group and were given a couple of outdoor tables. The weather was great, so this was perfect but there were bugs and leaves falling every so often while we dined!
The staff were very friendly and attentive. We were initially after some entrees and main dishes, but the waiter told us of their Tuesday $10 pizza specials. Most of the diners took up the offer and ordered pizzas instead. They were all tasty and cooked to perfection, definitely making this night a cheap and delicious dinner.
Check out the review of Royal Saxon in the blog post below.
Love Saxon for both casual dinning & a nice sit down meal for any occasion. Have been here for boys nights, birthday's (inc. my 30th), late Friday night late dinners, Sunday chill sessions.. even mothers day lunch. Choose from the bar tables, outdoor benches or restaurant seating behind the bar.
The staff and pretty chilled however they do know their menu which is always a bonus. They're also incredibly helpful when it comes to diary requirements & preferences. Wine list is great as is the beer offering. Cocktails are pretty damn amazing, try the Sicilian Sour if you get the chance.
I've seen Saxon go through 2 menu changes and the most recent is the best yet!
Venue, vibe & music are all on point. Cannot recommend Royal Saxon highly enough.
I attended a work function recently. We were in the courtyard, although it was a cool November night it was quite cosy with heaters. We were served delicious finger food consisting of skewered prawns, arancini, lamb cutlets, eggplant patties, chicken drumsticks, pizza. All served with appropriate dipping sauces. The staff were very diligent at replacing used plates and providing bowls for the bones, skewers etc often a problem with a function such as this. I will be returning for a meal in the warmth of the summer.
I come here for drinks regularly because of how nice the venue is and its location (chapel street/pawn & co are down the road)! I have only been on a busy night once and usually when I've come it had been empty, but still enjoyable with a good group of friends! Classy place I found, good tunes, men in suits!
Great venue to catch up with friends. We had dinner, shared a antipasto plater, chips, salad, pizza & pasta. All really good, tasty & quick. Service friendly, prices reasonable. Highly recommend!
Nothing special: Service was fine, food was good but nothing really stood out we had pizza and a few smaller dishes and the wine was pricey. Week night dinner was $150 for 2 people and really not worth its price tag. Would recommend for a casual drink with friends but that's about all.
I actually found the pizza to be suprisingly good! Definitely not what I was expecting. I would happily visit again for the food though the crowd isn't really to my liking. Staff were so-so. Nice ambience.
Always knew this play was a little bit fancy but when it came to ordering food I thought we were going to get a pretty standard pub meal. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised with my lamb shoulder! Greatly presented and tasted fantastic!
I visited the Royal Saxon with friends on a public holiday for lunch, we were able to book a table for 8 which was perfect. I had the seafood pasta which was really nice, I also had the tiramisu for dessert which topped it off nicely.
Great spot for a drink and catch up with friends. Have not eaten there, but the food looks good. Can recommend for a Friday night drink after work
Spent plenty of lazy Sundays at the Saxon. Staff are always awesome, and food is great quality and cocktails on demand is a winner. Great venue for most occassions.
The Royal Saxon never fails to deliver in my opinion. Not only is it a trendy venue with a great ambiance but the menu is consistently fantastic offering gastropub style meals at reasonable prices. Had lunch at the Royal Saxon yesterday with a group of friends for Melbourne Cup and had a really enjoyable afternoon. I ordered the Mediterranean crusted john dory with tomato gazpacho, green apple and snow pea salad and was really pleased. Definitely no food envy for me! We also ordered the polenta chips and a couple of side salads to share. Whilst these weren't spectacular they were decent accompaniments. The gorgonzola sauce that came with the polenta chips was particularly tasty though.
Great Classy Venue. Beaware though this place gets packed and you might have to wait a while!. Good range of drinks, not to sure about food as I was there while it was a bar.
Royal Saxon Richmond is ostensibly a gastropub, and when you walk through the establishment it's all very textbook. Sleek lines, a bit of exposed brick here and there and metal finishing - not quite rustic, not quite industrial. The spot is popular with the after work crowd and on a Friday night it's pumping with creatives from nearby businesses and suits returning home after a long day's work.
First up was a delicate parcel of baked haloumi, wrapped in zucchini and filo pastry, topped with roasted toms, frisee and mint salad and vincotto. A wonderful mouthful of oozing cheese. I especially loved the addition of mint in the salad which gave a lovely fresh and unexpected accent to the dish. The pork croquettes had a delightful crunch on the outside and was stuffed with tender, slow-cooked pork cheeks. Usually, I'm a bit squeamish eating cheeks but here, I did not mind at all - I think it being in cube shapes helped! Although this dish harks back to cucina povera, it most definitely didn't taste povera. The creamy buffalo mozzerella and flavoursome puy lentils made the dish special. This would be a great dish to go with some drinks as it is nicely salty and crunchy. The calamari 'alla Catalana' was very tender and refreshing. I loved the gazpacho base and the juicy cherry tomatoes, pickled shallots and the slight nuttiness from the fresh broad beans. Our trio of main dishes were paired with a 2013 Snake and Herring 'Tough Love' chardonnay from Margaret River and a 2013 Las Moras malbec from Cuyo, Argentina. One of
Awesome Customer Service. Booked for 20 of us across the weekend. Staff, food and drinks were all fantastic!
One of the many smart looking buildings on Church Street housing a good spot for a drink and a bite to eat! The menu is a great mix of hearty, warming dishes to suit the wintery weather and lighter bites with oysters, pizzas, pastas and risottos. The Tassie oysters are fabulous at the moment so why would we resist??!! Plump, fresh, creamy and wonderful – a dozen each would have not been enough!! We are in a democracy when it comes to the mains with the selections ensuring that we get a different dish each, these are my kind of lunch-iends!! So Hogget – not quite a lamb but not mutton! Slow cooked shoulder with roasted carrots and risotto bianco is frickin’ amazing – pardon me for swearing!!! The meat is succulent, rich and out of this world, the carrots are sweet and the risotto a perfect friend for the dish! Very, very happy!! The Osso Bucco is also a dish full of flavour, cheeky marrow, smooth mash – bring it on!! Ligurian fish stew – blue eye, blue mussels, octopus, Crystal Bay praw
Despite the lengthy menu, recent visits have seen me returning to the fettuccine Toscana. This dish embodies rustic Italian - perfect ribbon
Awesome Food & Awesome Service. Went in for dinner last night and received the best service! We were recommended to come here for the delish pizza's and they lived up to their reputation! My partner got the steak and it was cooked perfectly. The dessert was to die for - highly recommend the espresso martini-misu! The waitress serving us was so helpful as well. Always made sure our glasses were full and that we were happy. Definitely making this a regular spot to come, even a few cheeky drinks after work!
Amazing! Went to the Royal.... Amazing!
Went to the Royal Saxon for a friend's birthday Sunday afternoon. The staff were all so helpful. Drinks were fantastic, food was amazing. An all round great afternoon, very positive environment. And a special thank you to the manager that helped us out with the birthday boy being a bit under the weather!!
We had dinner here last night, I was so impressed with the food, everybody on our table enjoyed their meals, service was amazing.. Reasonably priced, great atmosphere, Absolute compliments to the chef.. Can't wait to go back and try some more dishes.. Highly recommend the ancient grain salad... Yum yum yum
Great design, great staff, perfect risotto
Enjoyable. Came here in the afternoon for a pizza for lunch and some drinks with a group of 5 friends. We sat outside near the bar area, the atmosphere and serenity was absolutely fantastic. Good service and the food was relatively good. We all ordered a small pizza each and all agreed that the pizza was a little bit oily and some pizza's didn't have much flavour, however all in all was a good place to go. I went back a few days later at night time for some drinks with girlfriends and had an equally rewarding experience. Will be back
Food is ok but great place to chill out. I love their outdoor area!
Great food. Little bit pricey but if you get a good waiter then it makes up for it. Also cloth napkins. Totally under rated. Do it. Get blind. Get kicked out. You won't get banned ; p
Cool, cosy & nice. I like coming here because they have a good menu and drink list, although they need to bring Leffe back!
In a nut shell GREAT food, GREAT SERVICE, GREAT atmosphere. The Saxon are mixing it up, with a Sunday Roast on a Sunday & many more. Well done guys keep it up. Check it out guys won't be disappointed.
Been here a couple of times. Great atmosphere but boring, overpriced food. I won't go back for a meal again, but definitely will for drinks!
Very good. Clean flavours, fresh and very tasty. Calamari and celery salad excellent. Gnocchetti with braised lamb delicious. Consistently reliable.
Reliable. Again I find myself at the Saxon and after 3 years little has changed. be that a good thing or bad you can always rely on the food, service and a great looking wine list
My partner and I ate at the Saxon on Saturday night and even though the staff were rushed they stayed attentive. Our waiter lacked a little polish but was well drilled with the menu.
We ate mushroom risotto and flathead which I highly recommend.
Keep it up, loving your work.
When pizza and pasta are done as they should be they make the heart sing. Highly recommended.
Coool. Cool place to go for a drink n a pizza. Something about it makes you feel like its Saturday. Some people get a little overdressed. I felt a little uncomfortable going in my high tops. Just thought to share with you.
Italian food done so well! .... Italian food done so well!
Have had dinner here 3 times now, with different people. Consistently beautiful with excellent service. I don't understand those who criticise this place. What's not to like.
I've usually loved this place and have eaten here at least 15 times. The service is almost always good, sometimes it's GREAT but have still experienced that "I'm too good to be serving you" attitude, but this is not the rule. Food is almost always great - pizzas are fabulous, soups great and the antipasti is unbelievable - buffalo mozzarella to die for, broad bean bruschetta is gorgeous and the fritti is a complete surprise with the sage and lemon slice inclusion. Last visit I had a pasta ragu unlike anything I'd had before - completely perfectly balanced and full of pops of different, subtle flavour - I was sad when it ended! That night the lovely NZ waiter made the evening perfect with his wine suggestions. But my most recent experience was a disappointment. Granted it was Xmas season revelry and so really noisy and busy, but my meal was atrocious, sad to say. It was some strange pasta called something like peciere with home made sausage. It was inedible in every way - the pasta hard and chewy, which the waitress said is typical of this pasta, but the sausage and flavours were awful. Just a big MISS! Sent it back with a very gracious waitress I must say and ordered the ravioli de mare with zucchini flowers and lemon instead. Edible, but again - a miss for me. I will go back in the hope that this was just a bad hair day in the kitchen and it looks like they've taken that awful peciere off the menu already - which is a comfort. Stick to the amazing, simple rustic food you guys do so well Royal Saxon, and I'll be a happy camper again!!
I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food, but it's a nice place for a drink. Music is a bit loud which makes conversations with more than one person a bit hard.
Great building, lovely outdoor area too.. Had lunch at the Royal Saxon today - a warm sunny day. The hotel has been superbly renovated and the dining area is really nice. The outdoor "beer garden" has been well designed - we'll be back to enjoy a beer and some snacks one evening soon. The food was very good - I had the seafood ravioli and it was delicious; my partner had the flathead and has been raving about how good it was, all afternoon.
A return visit is a definite.
Great spot for bite, interesting menu with good beer and wine lists and staff are friendly and attentive
Tuscan Martini is to die for (and I'm a champagne girl!). Great atmosphere but popular so book ahead. Food very pricey but you will have read that in other reviews. Trendy, fun, fabulous. Just don't go if you're starving.
Good food but pricey for portions. Very small pizzas but tasty. has an italian influence with fine dining appeal under a trendy, beautifully renovated gastropub. Fun night out here i give it a 7/10 for food and 8/10 for service.
Have been to the Saxon a number of times now always great service and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Good atmosphere on a friday. Food is really good too, great pizza and the best Tiramisu BUT they have taken out off the menu! Very disappointed, please put it back on saxon! Would recommend as a great place to meet friends on a fri after work!
Good selection of beers. Reasonable food, had the beef shin gnocchi. Recommend as a pre drink-dinner sort of place, but there is better
Worth a re-visit. We had a rather negative experience here about a year ago and said then that we wouldn't bother again.
BUT. After some friends convinced us to try it out again it's back on the list.
The food was great!
The service was attentive and not overbearing.
And the overall experience was great.
There is so much on the menu I want to try. Will be back!
Thank you Saxon for coming good!
Great. After a frustrating trip along Church St furniture shopping we stopped into the Royal Saxon for lunch. What a great setting, definitely a great place for summer...we were quickly seated, got drinks and orders taken. Food arrived about 10 minutes later. We had the steak special and the lamb, both dishes were delicious and quite reasonably priced...good gastropub!
Six of us went for a quick lunch and we had two kids under 1 with us too. The waiter was great and didn't blink an eyelid about the kids. A Couple of tasty beers helped to wash down a couple of delicious pizzas. My wife had a prosciutto and zucchini pizza which she loved and I had a shaved pork belly pizza which was delicious. My friend had a John dory which he liked and the others also enjoyed their meals. I thinks it's a good place for a quick lunch with some beers. Enjoy it for that and you will enjoy your time there
Good but needs a bit of work. Had some food and a couple of beers here on a Saturday night during Spring Racing. Place was pretty busy but still got a table upstairs and the service was great. Food was good and they seem to change it up a bit but it is a bit on the pricey side. Still the girl waiting on the tables up there was doing a great job especially considering how busy it was. However when this place opened they had a cracking beer list and some interesting random beers on tap - now the tap list is fairly generic and the bottles haven't changed much in 18 months, while the beer industry in this country has come on in leaps and bounds. Could definitely use a change.
Caught up with few mates for a bite to eat and a few beers. We enjoyed the venue and the food - good for a catch up :)
Four Corners Dinner. So... I saw an event for the Spring Graze "Put Victoria On Your Table" event organized by the Food and Wine Festival mob and thought I'd give it a go.
I'm glad I did!
$35 two courses and a glass of wine! Sounds too good to be true...
This was the 1st in four dinners the Saxon are doing to celebrate all things Victorian. New season asparagus with a Green's egg followed by Milk fed Kyneton lamb. The waiter described it as Roman style which was some wet roasted technique that used bread crumbs to keep the moisture in. YUM give me more of those breadcrumbs! We drank a glass of Dalwhinne Estate Pinot a great match to the lamb. Finished off the night booking in to the next 3 Monday nights.
I recommend this event to anyone who wants to support local Victorian produces. It feels good to know that you're supporting local farmers and tastes even better!
S
Nice place, simply avoid the tortellini, it's a joke. For $6 per piece of tortellini. Ridiculous value for money!
OMG THE BEST DINNER. From the moment I entered the establishment there was a vibe that told me this is the place to be!!
The food was incredible from start to finish, the service was exceptional. Another thing I noticed was that the staff actually looked like they were happy to be there.
All in all a memorable evening, I wouldn't hesitate going there again when I am next visiting Melbourne.
The fact that patrons are willing to line up to gain entry speaks volumes :) Well done !
Divine. Fantastic service as always.
The food is wonderful as is the interior. Large venue with a pleasant outdoor area and seating, relaxed inside vibe and function space/bar upstairs.
The last few reviews have not only been laughable but without doubt written by people that have no idea about what quality food is! I eat at the Saxon 2-3 times a week and although the service could be better on occasions the food is spot on.. We had some of the best pasta this side of Italy, very simple rigatoni with meat balls and the special quail which was amazing. Thank you chefs for an awesome meal.... Please of your going to blog know what your on about....

Nothing out of the ordinary.. We visited Royal Saxon on a Monday night. The design of Royal Saxon is modern and sleek. As we visited on a Monday night it wasn't at all busy but I can imagine even on a busy night it wouldn't get as noisy a lot of other venues.
The food was nice, nothing spectacular and considering the price I can think of many other places where I have had better meals which were half the price.
Royal Saxon is a nice venue, with nice outdoor areas. I would be keen to go back for drinks with friends as the wine list is comprehensive but I won't be rushing back for a meal.
Yum. Friendly and attentive service, wonderful pasta and excellent atmosphere. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.
After reading everyone else's reviews I was a bit unsure if I should go to a lunch my friends planned there. All 7 of us found the food to be amazing! The wine list is out of control, the waiter was pleasant with a bit of humour and my fish was to sensational. Either I went on a good day or everyone went on an off day.
Mid Week Treat. I stumbled out of Fitness First on Church St, Richmond, tired and hungry and spotted the Royal Saxon across the street. The inside was warm and inviting, with roaring fires, soft lighting and the quiet hum of a content mid week crowd. The food was good, well balanced, reasonably priced and served with friendly attentiveness.

A Great Richmond spot. I hadnt been back in a few months due to the pizza, thought I would give it another try however....$20 for a gourmet woodfire style pizza, you always have a high expectation. When the only ingredient on 30-40% of the pizza is napoli sauce it is quite a let down in comparision, with the pizza offering at Barkers and The Undertaker. I thought this issue would have been addressed. I wasnt drinking last night so i ordered a lemon lime bitters whichas served in a small glass about four standard sips.........a bit of a let down.
On a higher note, the Braised pork belly w cannelini beans was lovely, a little unsure if the top skin should have been crispy, mine wasn't....but still very enjoyable.
Atmosphere was great, I got the vibe staff were trying to be a bit blase in regards to service not offering fresh cuttlery and plates for change of course. I will be back just not for the pizza
Food was good but portion sizes quite small. We had to wait ages for our meals but they offered a round of drinks as an apology, which was a nice touch. Staff were polite. We snacked over drinks on a Friday night... I think weekdays would be better for a proper meal.
Go on a weekday (at lunch time...). Gorgeous fitout and the food is sensational!
Great for midweek dinner, however, unless you're the type of person who currently spends their friday and saturday nights lining up outside the Precinct Hotel I'd avoid this place like the plague on weekends :)
The potato and talleggio pizza is to die for!

I wrote this review very soon after Royal Saxon opened, and it's since become insanely busy, and even on a week night people are crammed in to this place, so er, try for a week day lunch, perhaps...
Fantastic fit out, very helpful (if slightly overly so) staff, food was divine. Unfortunately small portions for the price, & the drinks menu is exactly the same as their other bar (public house). Overall a great evening, try the gelato!
