Had the most amazing meal here - brilliant service as well cannot recommend more highly
4th visit to the modern eatery! Great food and service every time
Delicious. Lovely decor, atmosphere and staff!
Recommend popping by!
Best sushi I've ever had hands down
I got some take away from here.
Initially the Katsu King chicken burger was really tasty, and it was served on a rice bun. The bun was good and the chicken pretty tasty.
Not wanting 2 burgers I ordered some katsu chicken baos. Well I thought I did but I only got 1 bao which was ok, but it was exactly the same as the burger so not the best value.
The veggie gyoza were tasty, the takoyaki was alright, and the miso soup quite tasty.
The cheesy tofu bento was a good vegetarian dish, and this was worth ordering.
Overall this was a pretty good meal.

Called in here for dinner last night. The food was ok.
We had sashimi and some other dishes such as sashimi. The service was friendly.
The food wasn’t cheap but you get what you pay for, and what you get.

Been here at the pop-up store and its beautiful presentation of sushi definitely pulled me in. Staff are friendly and welcomed us into their restaurant. We weren't awfully hungry and decided to try their aburi sushi - seared salmon with a creamy torched top.
I loved our creamy it was and how easily the salmon melted in the mouth, however, I couldn't get past how sad the rice tasted. It was slightly dry, the the proportion of rice to salmon felt a bit heavy in the mouth.
Definitely ready to head back here to try their other scrumptious-looking dishes.
Pros: the katsu chicken was crispy and curry very flavoursome, had a little bit of a spicy kick to it.
Cons: sushi were not too special in my opinion. There was more rice to sashimi/nigiri ratio than most other places I've been to.

I have been dreaming about Katsu Curries for month while working from home so was only a matter of time before I sought one out. Today I had a great one at TME which I have been to previously for their tasty salmon oshi and other delectables. Today’s Katsu Curry was generous on curry sauce and the crumbed chicken itself was nice and thick and a whole lot of crisp. My serve was unfortunately missing all the Japanese pickles I love and was only garnished with tomato’s which was perhaps an oversight but other than that a tasty version of this classic.

I can remember walking past The Modern Eatery (TME) at least a couple of times in the 4 months since they opened. I did have a curious look in on one of those occasions, which is why I was excited to accept an invitation to dine as a guest earlier in the week.
TME’s owners are passionate about modernised Japanese food having experienced some of these fusion styles in their travels to the West Coast of North America (Vancouver) where Japanese has evolved to suit international styles and tastes. First step for these two was via Fremantle, and now Richmond in a perfect city fringe location that has seen restaurant gentrification in recent times.
We sat at the sushi bar and watched fresh Salmon Oshi being prepared with the special aburi sauce being seared in top with an artful blowtorch. I can see why The salmon Oshi is their signature dish. Stunning tasting. The Japanese sushi chef grew up in a family who ran a sushi bar and he certainly had great skills and provided with a passionate conversation about sushi outside of the traditional constraints of Japan.
The Kingfish Carpaccio was a delight as well, I loved the addition of a Japanese spiced guacamole on this delicate fish.
Kelisi really got fixated on the salmon with basil leaf and berry on our tasting plate. It seemed like this was her magic experience for the night. She was surprised that such a simple addition could change the dish so much.
As well as the raws we were excited to try some of the cooked instafamous dishes from TME. Some of you may have seen Bao Bae already with the iconic waving “lucky” cat mascot cutely emblazoned on the Bao bun. This wagyu Bao with seaweed and pickles was full of flavour as well as cute... now there’s a winner.
The tempura chicken was quite sweet on the kitty k slaw and tartare sauce. I’m glad we had this near the end as I could have easily kept going with this one.
Catch Me in a Foil was the surprise dish of the night. I’ll admit to not normally going for fish parcels when dining out but this one had made me question this decision. The broth that this salmon was cooked in was unreal. It was just on the edge between being too salty, but walked back to the point that it was “more please” moreish. An absolute stunning dish that isn’t the looker of others but certainly should be ordered.
Other fab dishes were the pork gyozas & The cheesy tofu which I would have had more of if it wasn’t for the fact that I was absolutely stuffed full.
We also sampled the following cocktails
Kyoto Sunset - Green with a tarty yuzu and lime plus gin
Geisha’s Kiss - Red with lychee, strawberry and sake... this drink almost had a rose water taste to it...so it surprised me that this wasn’t one of the ingredients
Old Fashion - Japanese whisky with orange and bitters... TME’s answer to Aperol ... tasty.
Being at the sushi bar was a really interesting dining experience, (it was like dinner and a show) so if you ever get the option, book that spot!
It was certainly hard for me to find fault with any of the dining experience tonight, which is why I have handed out a perfect 5. I didn’t come here for traditional Japanese and nor should you.
The salmon oishi is blow torched so nicely, served with this amazing sauce on top. You know its good when I do not want to share the dish with anyone and have it all for myself.
There is ample seating area on both levels and a nice bar downstairs
The Modern Eatery is one of my favorite sushi places in Melbourne!
Always fresh and presented beautifully, they never disappoint.
My favorite dishes are the chirashi sushi, salmon sashimi, and sweet potato tempura. It's tasty and cut perfectly.
If you are looking for a fine-dining sushi experience, this is the place to go!
Definitely recommended.
Fried chicken bao and fried chicken sandwich and blow torch sushi! So many fantastic options, the modern eatery really does have it all. A great lunch or dinner venue in swan st. Love!
Minimalistic decor, The sushi tastes amazing, and they make it fresh as you order. Delicious sake. Baos were average. Would visit if we are in area and crave japanese food 😊
Been to The Modern Eatery twice and definitely would be back again.
Mitarashi Camembert - must have! Deep fried Camembert that I ordered both times.
Aburi sushi - their specialty which I ordered both times.
Assorted sushi - decent sushi that's every Japanese restaurants staple.
The eggplant was standard.
We tried both of the bao baes, and although they were nice (and very cute cause of the cat stamped on) not sure I would order it again as it wasn't stand out.
The chasing sunsets was really good and would definitely get that again as well as the fry me to the moon - deep fried sushi!
Love this place, great for catch-ups or date nights!
Amazing experience! Wonderful food is served! Everything is on point, haven’t had a good Japanese food experience in Melbourne for awhile! Thumbs up to this amazing place!
Walking down Swan Street we stumbled upon this lovely clean modern looking Japanese restaurant. We devise to have our lunch here and sat at an outdoor table as the weather was so nice. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. There are lunch specials but we ordered off the regular menu. Between the three of us we sampled edamame, bento box, miso , poke bowl and a teriyaki salmon. The meals were so tasty and well presented. It all tasted fresh and healthy. Well priced and friendly staff. The inside is so clean and tidy.
I enjoyed the food here and would give it a 3.5/5. The baos had a really soft bun and delicious filling however it wasn’t the best baos i’ve had. They are quite pricey however most baos in restaurants come at a high price. The sushi was quite average, nothing amazing despite its lightly higher price. The aburi was definitely a highlight, and if i did come back, it would be for that. I think it is what they’re best at and was very impressed by it at their various nigiri however a downside was that the food was very very slow to come out. Definitely order everything you want in the beginning because by the end i did want to order more of the aburi however i was deterred by the wait time for the food.
Overall i would recommend coming to try this place out, however i do think the price is slightly high and that the service could be a bit faster.
delicious sushi! sleek, gorgeous presentation, and worth every mouthful. the chasing sunset roll was my favourite, but the signature aburi - the slamon oshi, was a different but wonderful type of sushi. the blowtorched sauce gave the sushi a warmer temp which was at first was an unusual sensation, however it complemented the salmon really well! the kamikaze rolls were served in generous portions and was a nice twist on the classic california roll. our waitress was also really kind and lovely, she took the time to explain the menu to us, showed us some photos and was really patient and polite. will definitely come back to eat more of the sushi and try some new flavours!
Known for its Arburi (seared) Sushi, this is a good spot for Japanese tapas in a funky, modern setting. Greeted immediately on arrival, we were seated with water and menus. The diverse offerings cater well for my vegan friend and me as an omnivore. I was eagerly looking forward to the arburi experience.
Within moments the first dishes arrived. The Tacoyaki (ball shaped snack with octopus inside covered by batter on the outside) was fresh and so tasty with generous amounts of the complementary sauce and bonito fish flakes. The seared salmon on Chasing Sunset pairing with tiny shreds of sweet potato fries was genius, creating extra texture with these crunchy fries - scrumptious! My friend enjoyed her Vegan Tofu Salad and Veggie Roll, commenting on how much flavour was in the salad.
Speedy service and friendly smilies throughout our visit completed the experience. The place soon filled up after we arrived. The decor creates a fun atmosphere and I can visualise this place as a bar after all the eating is done.
Delicious food! Great for vegetarians, plenty of yummy options!! The cheesy tofu and the green leaf rolls are an absolute must. Nice cosy restaurant with friendly staff, good for a night out with the girls or a date night!
I really had a good experience eating in this restaurant. The foods here are soooo good and the service here is also very good. I tried the fry me to the moon which is my favorite here, it’s really crispy and i love the sauce! I also love the salmon oshi, kamikaze, and salmon avo roll. I tried the dessert as well, the fuji it is also not disappointing and it’s cute that’s looks like apple. Overall i really enjoy eat in Modern Eatery and i would definitely to come back here again!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing food. The Modern Eatery boasts modern Japanese dishes with it’s house specialty, aburi. The staff are excellent; they were happy to walk us through their menu, answer any questions and regularly checked on us.
We had the feed me 5 course set menu, which at $59 for 2 offers great value. Each course was delicious: a salad, kingfish sashimi, salmon aburi, gyozas & fried chicken. It didn’t leave us hungry, but left just enough room for dessert.
There’s also a good sized drinks menu with a range of hot and cold sakes (ps happy hour is from 5:30pm-7pm daily!)
One of my favourite restaurants in Richmond. Delicious food, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Salmon Oshi and Crispy chicken Bao buns are a must!
A friend and I had dinner at The Modern Eatery on Tuesday evening and really enjoyed it.
We ordered the following to share:
*Vegan Tofu Salad
*Miyazaki Chicken
*Salmon Oshi
*Chasing Sunset
*Wagyu Beef Bao
*Tofu Tempura Bao
*Fried Chicken Bao
We really enjoyed all meals but my favourites were the Miyazaki Chicken, Chasing Sunset & Wagyu Beef Bao.
Our bill came to $76 which I thought was reasonable for the amount of food we received and how full we were when we left.
Staff were friendly and service was prompt with the meals coming out quickly.
My whole family loved this place. They’re known for their aburi, so of course we had to try some - to which we weren’t let down. Also had the kamikaze and sunset sushi rolls, as well as the pali salad, tempura and eggplant, which was 👌🏼 service was great, definitely coming back here again! ✌🏻
Loved it! Great service, fantastic food to include a variety of options. Cannot wait to go back and have some ‘jappy hour’ Asahi’s. Great modern Japanese flavours
Always friendly and efficient service and good food. We usually order a variety of items to share, the staff are happy to help with suggestions and the food arrived promptly.
We went here as a large group of 14, the service and food were both exceptional. The feed me menu was a great was to experience what’s in offer at The modern eatery. We’ll be back!
Thank you for being great host!
The good thing about sharing plates is that you can try everything! And this place has a variety of dishes that really impressed me 👍 Fresh and tasty #japanesecuisine with wonderful food presentation to top it off. Great ambience as well.

I have to say The Modern Eatery is now my go to Japanese place ! The salmon is so fresh and amazing.
My favourites were definately the sushi. The salmon avocado roll, the green leaf and chasing sunset sushi melts in your mouth and were tiny bits of heaven. It was so good, we ordered another platter 🤤
The ramen, slow cooked salmon and aburi chashu bowl were decent but the bao bae’s were so soft and we loved them !!
But we couldn’t forget dessert. 😍 Sadly the macaron ice cream wasn’t available, but the Fuji was a pleasant surprise and looked so much like an apple ! I’m usually not a fan of cooked apple, but it was so amazing, i ate every last crumb.
For a japanese restaurant, the pricing is relatively okay and not expensive at all ! Definately worth stopping by if you have the change.
It’s a 4.2. Very slick operation here. They know exactly what they’re doing and they do it very well. Lovely food and impressive service abounds. It’s a nice modern fit out with cool grey tones. Not fancy but very appropriate. We had a very tight table fit! As close as I’ve ever experienced. For some reason it didn’t matter. It’s a minimalist wine list here with some good options. We chose a lovely Gruner Veltliner. We had five dishes overall - signature aburi, salmon avo roll, chasing sunset, pali pali salad and kurogi gyoza. All of these were superb with the absolute highlight being the signature aburi. Very impressive modern food. What did surprise us was how quickly things wrapped up here. The kitchen closed just after 9.30. We were the last to leave about 15 minutes later.
Nice place though. I would definitely return.
The Modern Eatery was a cute place to enjoy japanese food with friends!
The waitress that served us was patient when we were a bit confused with the food we wanted but she was happy to explain.
MEALS were 👍👍👍👍. No complaints!
Would defs come again.
Cost was less than $200 w/ 6 people! Yay!

The modern eatery has got one of the best aburi salmon nigiri. Their signature salmon oshi melts in your mouth, tasty, and fresh. We also tried the dessert called Fuji, which was really really good and unique. The place gets a thumbs up from us!
Also came here for lunch with my boss and colleague. Was a nice restaurant. Great atmosphere and decor. Lovely staff.
I think I ordered one of their poke bowls. And it’s looked amazing. I enjoyed every single bite. Wished there was more! It’s one of those “just right but definitely enough room for more” portions so it pays to maybe order a starter or sushi rolls etc.
Would definitely go back to try out their sushi and aburi. Desserts even!
Was pretty excited to have dined at TME, after seeing some exciting and creative items on the menu. Was definitely not disappointed.
Went for the ala carte option.
Bao bae - dish of the night. Loved the Wagyu, and dressings. Absolutely amazing!
Started with the Pali pali salad - so much crunch! The sweet potato 'fries' was interesting and a nice addition to the dish.
Soba So Good - another unexpected. Green tea soba packed inside a sweet tofu pocket, topped with pan fried eggs, aonori and japanese pickle. Yes from me!
Pork gyoza was good.
The signature Aburi was a great way to taste a bit of everything. I particularly enjoyed the pressed salmon with sweet soy and aburi sauce!Chasing sunset was another lovely salmon sushi roll :)
Overall was a delightful experience. Food was quick, service was great.
Will definitely be back to try a few more from the menu :)

When you’re out and about in Richmond and looking for a good Japanese spot? Then make sure that Modern Eatery is your next stop!. Let’s be honest here, you do not want to drive to this location as parking is abysmal. Do yourself (and the environment) a favour and catch public transport. You might need to walk off the meal after anyway.
Very friendly staff! Super accomodating and gave us great recommendations. We tried Kingfish sashimi, chicken, pali pali salad and the bao bae. All excellent options. Will definitely be back for the sashimi!!!
We dined on a nice cool Saturday evening with our family. Having seen quite a few photos on Instagram, I had this restaurant added to my ever growing list of places I wanted to try out. A quick google, told me that the original restaurant resides in Perth and that The Modern Eatery has expanded and opened up another restaurant in Melbourne.
Best Japanese sushi place in the area FOR SURE. Staff are super friendly. All sashimi is made fresh in front of your eyes. My mouth was watering as I watched the preparation of the kingfish. I had the foiled salmon. The broth was so delicious i needed rice to soak it all up. Cant wait to return & try the sushi which is their biggest thing
Spot on and arguably the best asian fusion in Richmond! Bao buns were amazing, but the gyoza stood out.. worth going just for them WOW! Been twice in a short space of time with different mates all loving it.
We visited The Modern Eatery for an early dinner at 5:30pm on a Saturday and had an amazing experience throughout the whole night!
Upon arrival, we were greeted by extremely friendly waiters, and were taken through the menu and their most popular dishes. Between three people, we ordered:
Pali Pali salad - an fresh and flavourful salad, wonderful textures with the crunchy sweet potato fries!
Miso salmon sashimi - ORDER THIS and you’ll thank me. Not only is the sashimi super fresh, but the texture is absolutely divine! You can definitely feel the difference as it’s professionally cut, and very high quality fish! The miso sauce was amazing, sweet and salty and perfect!
Salmon oshi - their signature dish! This is a MUST HAVE, definitely the top dish of the night. The salmon is seared to perfection, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Never had salmon this good in my life!
Chasing sunset & musashi - both rolls were delicious! The fish is so fresh, and the textures are amazing! The musashi is very clean tasting with the fresh scallops and kingfish, served with a special light dipping sauce. The star of the chasing sunset was of course the seared salmon (what more do I have to say?)!
Kurogi gyoza - they were tasty, but not mind-blowing. What we did love about this was the crispy onion topping!
Bao bae - packed a punch of flavour! The wagyu was very yummy and the crispy aonori bits were heavenly!
Miyazaki chicken - crispy on the outside, and super juicy and tender on the inside! The tartare sauce completed the dish!
After all the food, we were craving for something sweet to end the meal, so we decided to get both their Fuji and Matcha pannacotta desserts. Both desserts were beautiful, and very light and tasty. Our favourite was the Fuji - the apple compote filling almost reminded us a bit of apple pie!
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at The Modern Eatery, and couldn’t fault any part of the night! I would highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a delicious, fresh, and affordable modern take on Japanese food!
AMAZING food and service. Nothing negative to report about anything! Friendly staff and the food is on another level, stands out from the abundance of Japanese restaurants in Melbourne
TME really is sushi/Japanese heaven with some of the most creative, fresh and delicious tasting Japanese dishes we’ve had in a while. This sushi plate was simply to die for! Their cocktails and desserts are also awesome and prices are all so decent! A huge win in twogood’s books!
This place is awesome. Second time I've been. Just try everything you can on the menu, I haven't had a bad meal yes. Great service as well. The dishes are accompanied with an explanation of the mean and the nuances of how best to eat.
The restaurant also gave us free desert because it was Valentine's Day.
We were craving for some authentic Japanese on Saturday night and was very excited to try out The Modern Eatery.
Our waiter was extremely welcoming and friendly, he helped us decide what to order and tailored to our needs.
We were extremely pleased with the food that was brought out to us in terms of presentation and flavours.
The Salmon Oshi and Kingfish Carpaccio were especially well balanced - fresh with the perfect mix of flavours, taking us back to Japan with a bit of a modern twist.
The Musashi was a personal favourite of ours! I cannot emphasise enough on how fresh the scallops and kingfish were!
In terms of cocktails, they offer great variety, however The Geisha’s Blush was definitely a stand out.
Overall thanks for the invite and we had a very happy dining experience and we will be back again this Friday with our friends.
Recommended by a friend, and TME didn't dissapoint! Delicious authentic Japanese food paired with good drinks. Do eat the salmon oshi as this is their specialty! As well as trying out the soba so good. There were plenty of options too for my friend who is a vegetarian! Their desserts were delicious and also great to look at!
The staff were friendly and welcoming from beginning to end. Great place to come for a friendly dinner or a date night!
Came here the other weekend and was pleasantly surprised when going inside. It is a beautiful small restaurant serving Japanese Food Tapas style.
We ordered 6 dishes off the menu and they all tasted quite nice. The outstanding dishes were however the Bao Bae, Gyoza and the Salmon OSHI.
I would recommend you to not get the beef teppanyaki as it was a bit tough.
Would like to go again and try the other dishes too
Food:🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Meals were delightful and delicate to the tongue. The salmon oshi dish was was melt on in your mouth perfect with a slight taste of smokiness. The miyazaki chicken was lightly battered and also enjoyable. Teppanyaki beef was well flavoured, juicy with a good amount of heat. Fuji apple dessert was an amazing treat (it almost seemed too pretty to eat). Overall all dishes were of a high quality.
Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Food came out quickly and servers were polite when explaining the menu and dishes to us. We were pleasantly surrprised when we were offered a complimentary dessert dish. The Modern Eatery had read our booking note regarding a birthday and politely asked us to wait for the dish when we were preparing to pay.
Price: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Definitely worth it for the experience and the quality of the food however a little dear considering portion size.
A great addition to Swan Street and one of the new kids on the block. The Modern Eatery boasts Japanese flavours with you guessed it a ‘modern’ twist. The decor is sleek and and sophisticated and a great ambiance for romantic dinners or a night out with friends. Great value for money as we chose the tasting menu and some cheeky cocktails. The wagyu Bao Bae was a bit of a letdown hoping the beef would be a bit more tender and have that melt in your mouth appeal. We had a great night the service was great only minor complaint that some dishes were taken away without asking even though we were still picking at it. Regardless we had a great night and will definitely be back to try more dishes.
Highly recommend! They have a pretty cool menu option for 2 ($59) but we opted to go off the beaten path - were not disappointed. Their signature aburi doesn't seem as "melt-in-your-mouth" as other places but the yuzu dashi broth packed a punch. Clear winner is the salmon oshi though - make sure you try it!
Delicious!
Loved everything that we had here. Staff were really friendly. We came down right on 5:30pm - 2 of us. The restaurant filled very quickly. Highly recommend

How had I never tried this place before?? The food was excellent!
My friend and I shared a few dishes and honestly, I could not pick a standout because they were all so good. We started with the salmon sashimi which was buttery soft and melt in your mouth. The crumbed Camembert was perfectly crunchy and gooey - something very unique for a Japanese style restaurant too! The tempura zucchini sushi was excellent and the beef bao buns were some of the best bao I’ve ever had. For really high quality, unique and reasonably priced food in Richmond, look no further than The Modern Eatery.
After an unsuccessful attempt by a burger chain, a new Japanese restaurant has taken up residence on Swan Street in a part of the street that has almost completely changed in recent years. The Modern Eatery – House of Aburi Sushi is a sister to two restaurants in Perth, and that foundation might be part of the reason that a few months on it is already more successful than the previous tenant.
The aspects I like about TME speak volumes of what I don’t like in many casual Japanese restaurants and cafes around Australia. Those behind this place have put some thought into the menu, and the fitout. It doesn’t feel cheap, but it is still casual. The space isn’t plain, with some nice high tables to make it feel like a place to eat, and not a takeaway joint or foodhall.
Most importantly, the couple of times I’ve been for lunch I have found some good quality food, that is reasonably priced.
I was impressed with Modern Eatery’s Japanese with a twist. We ate:
-Bao Bae (wagyu)
-Soba so good (soba inari pocket)
-Salmon Oshi (pressed salmon nigri)
-Miso salmon sashimi
-Koyo in Hokkaido (topped tuna sushi)
-Miyazaki chicken (tempura chicken)
The New Zealand salmon sashimi tasted fantastic, a delicate fatty flavour, served at the prefect temperature. It seemed to me that a lot of care was taken with the preparation of this dish to get the full flavour out of the salmon.
The Salmon Oshi had a fantastic, delicate flavour also. Worthy of a signature dish.
The Miyazaki chicken was a nice alternative to Karaage and also really good. If I went again I would drop the Koyo in Hokkaido for something more interesting.
My wine tip is the Alan McCorkindale Piont Noir (although it was served a little warm) which had great savoury notes.
For two we spent $81 on food so I would suggest the feed me would be best for the very hungry or very indecisive.
With a kick start in WA’s funky Fremantle, choosing Richmond as their Vic home base is a game but smart option. While Thai and Vietnamese food are at every corner, good sushi with a twist is a little harder to come by. The name doesn’t lie; keeping many of the traditional flavours and staples, the kitchen brings a modern edge to their menu and patrons.
Their Otaku Fries with Japanese seasoning to kick start your meal won’t last long on the table, same goes for their adorable stamped wagyu bao (see pics). Follow your starters up with just about any sushi option on their list, easily some of the most melt-in-the-mouth sashimi you’ll find in Richmond. Their signature dish, the salmon Oshi with sweet soy and Aburi sauce is a must try, along with the Hiramasa Kingfish Carpaccio with an amazingly flavoursome Japanese guacamole. While the sashimi comes in generous serves, an even heartier dish for those not quite ready to give up the fried stuff is their Miyazake Chicken Tumpura. The slaw and tartare accompanying this one makes it feel like a fresh twist on an old classic. If you’re not completely full, the Fuji dessert isn’t only an Instagrammer’s delight, its apple compote and miso caramel mousse is a sweet finish to an amazing meal. Those with a less sweet tooth and love of the now notorious green stuff might give the Matcha panna cotta a go.
Cocktails or Sake are a must if you can look past the locally influenced beer and wide ranging wine list. A Salted Caramel Espresso Martini topped with popcorn or a Kyoto Sunset will fast become faves. Not up on your Sake knowledge but want to try? Ask! These guys know their stuff.
Although everyone might know Swan Street as the segway between burbs and sporting events, it’s now not to be looked over as a destination solely for a good meal. Add The Modern Eatery to your must visit places and enjoy!
Full (and maybe funnier) review live on the blog now, link in bio... :)
I don’t like sushi. Never have. This place has changed me. I feel like Rey in Star Wars, “There’s something inside me that’s awakened, and I don’t know what to do with it.” I feel like every other place I’ve ever had sushi of any type needs to be burned to the ground ... “HOW COULD YOU LIE TO ME?!?”
You think you’ve had fried chicken? Do you even tempura, bro? DO YOU? Their tempura battered fried chicken was off the charts. So full of flavour my mouth is still having orgasms.
Waygu bao bun ... lock up your daughters, parents, because they’ll want to run away and start a family with this bad boy. Absolutely amaze balls. And it’s got a cat on it!! Order the things, see for yourself.
Different with traditional Japanese food but we like the change especially the sushi. Will be back to try others. Didn’t get the Bao Bae in the $59 for two. Quite disappointed.
Now I don’t usually give out fives but good God this place has only been opened 3 months and every dish was utterly stunning. What an absolute pleasure to dine as guests of TME tonight. TME means The modern eatery and it’s exactly that. A sleek space staffed by young chefs putting a unique twist and modern spin on traditional Japanese dishes.
We sat at the sushi bar (spectacular atmosphere) and the first two dishes we sampled were assembled before our eyes. Sashimi with crunch? This was our early indication that we were about to experience something truly special. Never have I had sashimi with texture before and I’ve got to say I absolutely loved it. It was hands down the best sashimi of my life. Something so different and delicious with the sweet miso and the composition of the dish with the blueberry and tomato was just sensational.
Next up the aburi salmon. Let me preface this by saying aburi salmon is one of my favourite things to eat. Literally a lot of my passwords in life are ‘aburisalmon1’ so I know what I’m talking about when I say that aburi sauce was NEXT LEVEL. Like I’d poured some soy sauce into the provided dish before the food arrived in preparation and I did not touch my soy sauce even once the entire night. Each sauce the dishes were paired with were so flavoursome you didn’t need to add a thing, just phenomenal.
We moved on to the hot food next and tried the wagyu bao. I’ve never known perfection like it. I could literally eat those baos all day every day INSANELY DELISH. Just exceptional flavours again in the award winning sauces. These guys need to bottle that stuff and sell it to the masses.
At this point I had a quiet chuckle to myself because I generally get an invite to a Japanese restaurant every week and prior to arriving at TME my dining companion had said ‘not another Japanese restaurant’. But this is so far from your average Japanese restaurant it’s not even funny.
Other must eats the fried Camembert for something a bit different once again. The mitarashi (plum) sauce works perfectly with the creaminess of the cheese. Also the chicken tempura to me was very intriguing as I am accustomed to vegetable or seafood tempura but it was explained to us that chicken tempura is quite common in a certain region of Japan. Once again the chefs modernise and reinvent the dish by serving it with a slaw. The chicken had a very light batter and delicious sweetness from the tartare. By this point I was absolutely marvelling at the fact the two owners had never worked in the industry prior to opening these restaurants (they also have two successful branches in their hometown of Perth) It’s such a strong example of what you can achieve when you follow a passion. They explained how they grew up in an environment where food was not changed or challenged and their vision is around offering an alternative and just really trying to improve on that and constantly refine it.
Our final savoury dish the ‘catch me in a foil’ was the most melt in the mouth slow cooked king salmon followed by an outstanding dessert which was probably the most stunningly presented, innovative and tasty Asian desert I’ve had in living memory.
Not only was this the best Japanese food I’ve had like ever but its the best food regardless of cuisine that I’ve eaten in some time. When people find out about this place it’s seriously going to kill Mr Miyagi
The food was great, beautifully presented and top level produce, especially the salmon. Service was efficient and friendly and we will be going back soon.
Good vibe and amazing food! Quite pricey but totally worth it for the salmon that melts in your mouth and the Bao Bae that makes you want more! This place is mostly for sharing and it would take you 3-4 dishes to make the two of you full! Would definitely come back!
The food is extraordinary and they do serve high quality Japanese food which is rare. Not to mention, service was fanstastic. Definitely would recommend paying a visit!
The food was amazing, especially the signature sushi. The atmosphere and service was great. Will definitely come back again. They had a great selection of sake as well
DO: The bento box or any of their sushi bowls.
DON’T: Forget that they do takeaway as well as sit down.
TIP: There’s a private room upstairs for bigger groups. Also, Beer on tap
Stumbled across this place completely by chance one evening on the way to yoga. After a quick google it was immediately on my list of places to try and boy was it worth the wait! Finally got down to The Modern Eatery and was quite simply blown away by the flavour combinations, service and overall experience. The ambience was excellent, with a modern but warm and inviting vibe. I also appreciated being able to have a conversation without yelling over music or other background noise (it's the little things). My partner and I opted for the 'Feed Me' option which to our surprise included a drink (bonus!). Throughout the night, the sauces & dressings on each of the courses were sensational and I'm pretty sure I was even heard muttering 'This is an explosion of flavour'. For all those not doing the feed me menu, the Wagu Bao is a must have - I could have eaten 10 of those things! Last but not least, I have to mention the service as it really contributed to us having a lovely evening. The young gentleman who served us was knowledgable and hospitable and made some really good suggestions. He was efficient by not pushy and I only wish I could remember his name to personally commend him on his efforts. All in all, I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone who enjoys Japanese food!
Absolutely delicious food. We ordered 8 dishes and they were all fantastic. The wagyu bao and pali pali salad were definite favourites. Sushi, gyoza, fried chicken and desserts were all beautiful too. Very attentive, professional and friendly staff always smiling :) THANKYOU for a great dinner to celebrate my birthday!
What I enjoyed most from here is their hamachi from raw bar and the musashi GFO.
My disappointments were their Wagyu in Truffle and the Hokkaido Grill. I dont taste the truffle flavour as it mentioned.
Service was great and friendly.
I ordered the bento, chicken salad, and the aburi bowl. The bento was good value for money, and it was delicious. The aburi bowl was my favourite, loads of different toppings were in it and it was a good amount of variety. The rice could have been more especially for that price. The chicken salad was really basic and some parts were a little red. Overall, it's an okay place to go, but service wasn't the best and they mixed up one of my orders.
I'm willing to admit there are several facets to Australia's western-most state that gives it some wow over Melbourne; nicer winter weather for one, beautiful beaches within reasonable distance of the CBD, tick, and while I'm yet to visit the area, they also have the picturesque Margaret River region. But when Perth's 'The Modern Eatery' recently landed in Richmond's Swan St, that was another point for Melbourne.
Really love this place and definitely returning. The food is absolutely amazing, so fresh and the tastes are 💯 in every dish we had. Service is impeccable and the décoré is so well done!
Delicious Japanese food and great service! Sashimi and craft sushi is a must try with all kinds of amazing flavours. Definitely will be coming back for more!
After recently returning from Japan, I can definitely say, the quality and flavours of food at The Modern Eatery are just as incredible. I have already been back a number of times and is always as just as good, if not better, than the previous time. My go to dishes are the Otaku fries, Pali Pali salad, Salmon Oshi and Chasing Sunset. Although the Prawn star and Scallop sashimi are wonderful too, eek, so many delicious options! Desserts are beautiful too, make sure to leave space in your tummy. The food is fresh and tasty and for the price you pay, amazing! You are always greeted with a smile and the staff are friendly and are happy give recommendations! Easily the best Japanese in Melbourne!
Cute new place! Love the tables. Food is quite pricey with its small portion size, but that might just be my appetite!
The waiter was friendly and oh so helpful!
Would definitely recommend their 'Caribbean treasure' and their 'wagyu bao bae' dishes!
Aburi sushi that is authentic is very exciting! I enjoyed trying the signature aburi sushi - my only advice was perhaps having more of a varied selection.
The customer service was good. I loved that the waiter could pay our orders separately at the table. It was very swish!
Will definitely return to try more of their sushi flavours sometime soon.
This is my new local fave Jap! We went there for a sashimi and sushi feast and loved every bite. I had a few wines, and when my girlfriend mentioned that she wasn't drinking because she had been feeling ill with a cold, one of the owners (Jason) brought her out some warm lemon water. Service was faultless and food was great.
If you are after a cheap and cheerful 'Sushi Sushi' or 'Shuji Sushi' experience, perhaps keep walking. Otherwise, get on in there.
Newly opened in Melb!! Came here twice already. Once with my cousins from Perth for lunch which was actually their friends that moved to Melb to open this bad boy up! I also came here for dinner and I can't explain how much I love this place!! I enjoyed both lunch and dinner here, the place is executed really well with the space they have and decor on point!
They do have a website however bookings are for groups 6+ and the rest is walk in. I never had to wait. The website says the store closes at 9 but we came around 8:45pm and was still allowed in. I love the staff there, they know their menu. And their signature dish is seriously to die for. Make sure you try the salad, the best salad I ever had!! Sad thing is it's all the way in Richmond, hopefully they open their second store in Melbourne West! Defs my fave jap place ever!!

The Modern Eatery has arrived from the Western shores of Australia. Their two locations in Perth are popular, and now we only need to take a trip down Swan Street to try their fare. The Modern Eatery specialises in aburi sushi, the type seared by the flame of a blowtorch. Many of TME’s menu items comes with a modern twist, and there are interesting touches of creativity in the dishes, such as the addition of pickled cauliflower and blueberries to the
A few friends recommended the newly opened The Modern Eatery so I had to have a try.
The online booking system made it easy, but keep in mind, only booking for 6 or more are accepted. Location is convenient. Plenty of street parking.
As you walk in the restaurant, you feel the vibrant atmosphere. Lovely music, waiters greet you with a big smile, making you feel welcome. It's not a big place, some tables for 2 and 4 downstairs, and we seated upstairs. Usually you need to order downstairs, but the waiter was happy to place the orders for us to save us a trip down. He was patient and helpful with our ordering, and recommended some dishes which we all loved. He also helped us to decide how much food we'd need between us, 4 adults and 2 children.
Drinks and food were served very quickly. All the dishes were beautifully presented.
Pali Pali salad had mixed leaves with crispy really fine sweet potato chips on top. A small serve was enough for the 4 adults to share. It was nice and crispy, and dressing wasn't too overpowering. Good balance.
We also tried signature aburi nigiri and some craft rolls. They were all delicious. My favorite was chasing sunset. Beautiful name! Seared salmon on top with omelette and cucumber inside, sprinkled with fries onion and fine sweet potato chips.
Warm sake 'elegant princess' was delicious! Will have that again next time. Lunch time they also have a tap beer special for $5, including Anahi super dry larger which is petty good value.
Overall, it was a lovely experience, will definitely be going back soon.
After recently tasting some amazing aburi sushi, I was excited to try the Modern Eatery after reading their Broadsheet article. We came on the weekend and were seated in half an hour (no bookings for groups of 6 or less). We were seated on the taller tables which I usually don't prefer but the seats were surprisingly comfortable. Loved the fitout of the venue, it looks quite small but they also have tables upstairs. Very hipster feels. I'd been scrolling through social media all day so ordering wasn't too difficult. We opted for the hamachi sashimi, salmon oishi, omakase nigiri, musashi craft roll, bao bae, and matcha pannacotta. All the sushi was really good, rice was perfect. Would definitely recommend the salmon oishi. Omakase was quite standard. Bao bae was too salty although the bao itself was soft and fluffy. Service was really good, staff were friendly and chatty. Very good value for money and will be returning to try the other dishes.
Follow @hungrycookiee on IG Call the fire brigade, it’s flaming hot at The Modern Eatery. Swan St’s new contemporary house of Aburi, harnesses the power of flame, to lightly sear seafood by blowtorch. The technique originates from Tokyo’s Edo period, where searing the exterior extends the lifespan of fish. Hundreds of years later, aburi is well-loved amongst sushi enthusiasts. Chef Seiya Kurogi, fuses traditional elements of Miyazaki, with creative nuance. A sprinkle of anori here, sprigs of purple cauliflower there. I can confirm that...
Great food, try the otaku fries! Spacious with two floors and staff are really nice and attentive.
Aburi salmon was fantastic and great variety of interesting sushi
Go for the Oshi Sushi! They're delicious! Great food, drink and atmosphere. Service was great and staff was attentive. Would definitely come back.
The new kid on the block was a crowd pleaser!! By far the best bao buns and gyoza I've had. The service was a bit disorganised but I'm sure this will improve over time.
The Modern Eatery is the new kid in town on Swan St in Richmond. They are the in between of fancy and casual. Expect quality in their fishes and dishes. This place has a lot creativity and I reckon in a few months time as the team refines- they will be making a significant mark in Richmond. Service amazingly fast for a new comer, friendly and professional. 🌟🌟🌟/5
Signature aburi nigiri ($20)- be sure to eat as it arrives because you'll be missing out on the melting in your mouth experience. Each nigri is evenly shaped and the rice did not have a strong vinegar smell which I really liked. If you're okay eating fish is partially grilled and raw, you'll definitely appreciate this dish.⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Salmon- seared miso new zealand king salmon, sweet potato fries, black berry and baby tomato ($16). This dish made me want to lick the plate clean. The sauce was a lovely twist to the dish- an in between of sweet and sour. While the fish was fresh and melted in my mouth. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Cheesy tofu- tofu tempura, dashi melted cheese, tamago egg and shimeji mushroom ($14). A Japanese modern and earthy dish which everyone can appreciate as a light starter. The tofu tempura was crispy and no flavour in the dish was out of balance. The only thing I wanted more of was cheese. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Musashi- hokkaido sea scallops, cucumber, kewpie mayo with aburi hiramasa kingfish and house made avocado sauce on top ($16). The avocado sauce was smooth and perfectly complimented the king fish and kewpie. It provides a refreshing a taste. However, this dish falls short as I could not taste the scallop. I could only taste its texture. ⭐⭐⭐.5 /5
Wagyu in truffle- seared wagyu beef, truffle salt, creamy garlic shimeji mushrooms, lotus chips ($22). This dish was a major let down. The wagyu was cooked perfectly and it was served with a very sad standard mixed salad. I couldn't taste any truffle. The creamy garlic seemed to be its own independent element. ⭐⭐/5
Chokoreto- caramelised white chocolate mousse, raspberry curd, rasberry marshmallow, shortbread crumb ($14). First bite this dish was delicious. I loved the sour raspberry. As I'm taking more bites, it unfortunately becomes more heavy and tastes so sweet. I think the dessert needs more raspberry to balance it out. ⭐⭐⭐.5 /5
Matcha Panacotta-yuzu creme, white chocolate crumb, citrus segments, sherbet and meringue ($14). I really liked how the meringue was bite size. It was easy to taste with the rest of the dish. Unfortunately, the yuzu seemed to half heartedly compliment the matcha. Individually, the matcha and yuzu was delicious. I hope they make a mango panacotta with yuzu next because they're a better match made in heaven⭐⭐⭐/5
The did was absolutely amazing! Loved the tempura chicken. Service was friendly and they accommodated for different dietary requirements as well. Plenty of space upstairs for a big group.
Very unique and refreshing twist to your average Japanese restaurant around Melbourne. Presentation was detailed, elegant and flavours were balanced just right. Couldn't stop eating the Pali Pali salad, the fried shavings of sweet potato were a great touch. The vibe was youthful and friendly. Would recommend 👍
This place is exactly what Swan street needed! The place looks great, service attentive and the food so so delicious. Their specialty salmon oshi and aburi platter are nothing short of amazingggg. Great spot and we will be returning
Amazing food and service. We ordered the salmon sashimi, the aburi 'set' (forgot the name) that had tuna, scallop, salmon and ebi in it and the bbq chips. Sashimi tasted extremely well with the miso sauce. The salmon aburi was Ah Mah Zing. Honestly, I thought I'd died and went to Aburi Heaven or something. I basically converted from a Catholic to an Aburi worshipper. Had to take 0.5/5 because there was a bone in my sashimi which quite unsettled me. However they made it up with their service - an apology accompanied with a signature dish, which is their miyazaki fried chicken. At first I thought it was blanched and deep fried cauliflower because it was extremely tender - but no, it really was chicken! Order it, you won't be disappointed! Don't expect the 'deep fried chicken' to be crunchy KFC cause it aint. It's an explosion of flavours and texture. Overall a very pleasing experience. Am definitely a new regular!
The salmon Oshi is to die for and absolutely melts in your mouth. Couldn't fault a single dish that came out. This place is a must try and will be our go to spot for Japanese in Richmond. Great spot for after the footy!
Melbourne's new contemporary house of Aburi sushi, The Modern Eatery, is now open in Richmond, located on Swan Street, Richmond, after huge success with two venues in Perth. The Modern Eatery is the brainchild of owners and best friends since high school, Jason Tan and Edward and focuses on serving sushi ‘Aburi’ style, where the fish is lightly seared directly from the flame so that it’s partially grilled and raw to create a deep flavour. It’s the sauce pairings that make The Modern Eatery’s Aburi so unique.
the service was next to none. seriously worth checking out. ive never had better japanese food in my life. phenomenal! plus I loved the large neon cat. nice touch.
We were invited along to the opening over the weekend, and I was pretty excited that a new sushi place has opened up in Richmond! We chose a variety of sushi, sashimi and bao, and our expectations didn't disappoint us. The sushi was all fresh and delicious with lots of different flavour combinations. Because they use a blow torch over some of the sushi, it melts in your mouth.
The Kamikaze was really tasty, but because the roll was so big it was hard to eat it in one mouthful, meaning it fell apart! We also tried the Salmon Oshi which was amazing (especially the sauce), and the Prawn Tempura roll with sweet potato chips on top which was also delicious.
The salmon sashimi had a wonderful flavour and was incredibly fresh, but the outer edges were seared so probably just a tad overcooked for my liking.
We also tried the wagyu bao, and it had a lovely sauce, with well cooked meat.
All in all a really great experience, and I will definitely be back to try out more of the menu. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes, and the quality and freshness of the sushi really was a highlight. All the servers were delightful and very attentive, and the food came out at a good speed. The atmosphere of the place would be great for a date night.
Full service Japanese kitchen for all your late night mid-day all day hunger needs.
Delishious food so reasonable priced and great deals regular. They even have their own app!! for rewards and all good things.
Different experience of having couple of cuisines under one roof.
We ordered some Tofu Curry, it was nice. Make sure you add some extras otherwise it would be too simple.
Fantastic, delicious curries and food! The staff are friendly and lovely. I recently started to work near the area and I go here almost every lunchtime! Thank you 😁
I got some take away from here.
Overall this was a pretty tasty meal.
The salmon oishi is blow torched so nicely, served with this amazing sauce on top. You know its good when I do not want to share the dish with anyone and have it all for myself.
There is ample seating area on both levels and a nice bar downstairs

I discovered this place in the heart of Richmond, and it has been four times that my palate has feasted on its delicious dishes (Japanese tapas) that combine different flavors, aromas and colors.
Everything I have tasted is delicious, from the potato chips that have a special flavor, through the chicken, gyosas, salads, to their specialty that is Shushi.
As in any Japanese restaurant, I always hope the staff is friendly, and this restaurant is not the exception: its waitresses are too friendly, clean and fair.
