Review Palm Sugar Royal Thai Cuisine - Richmond

Alice
Certainly one of the best authentic Thai restaurants in Melbourne. Blown away by excellent dishes such as the rockling fish black pepper, crying tiger, and potato prawn. The sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce made by Andrew is so yummy. Wonderful service by Sib and Andrew all around . We certainly enjoyed ourselves.

Booking are highly recommended. We were served by the legendary Andrew who is high on humor and very easy to approach. We started with Potato prawns, Gai satay and crying tiger. For mains we ordered Thai chicken fried rice, chicken cashew nut stir fry, Masssam beef curry and beef brisket stir fry. The food and service was perfect. The whole staff is really well alert and ready to put customer service first. Excellent quality display of food and service, really impressed with the experience at Blossom. Kudos team

We visited Melbourne from Sydney. Gosh! Unexpectedly the food is exceptionally good, sooo good. I love all the food we ordered. Service is great. It's definitely a place you should visit.
Carlos Bravo
The best Thai beef in Melbourne đŸ€© super tasty and the portion was big enough. The place looks very modern with fantastic Thai decoration. We'll definitely come back.
Grace Madeline
Really great food and service! The owner gave us good suggestions and even customised a dish to suit my taste better and I love it. The sticky date pudding is also to die for!! Will be coming back in the future!

The thai milk tea sucks but the food is really good. I had the red curry and the beef salad and they tasted amazing. Probably would come back to try more

Shame disgusting over cooked boot leather sole with poor people skills with service that is appalling ,glasses of wine expensive and under marked, food not authentic .Thai sleeze denigration to genuine Thai people that I know and the amazing food one would expect worst experience ever my advice don’t go there ever sent the message we are good but not stupid signed the customer
Barry Brauer
The best roast duck curry I've ever tasted. Adding in lychee & pineapple to the salty curry balances it brilliantly, and the duck is sensational!
Lisa Sayers
Great staff, fantastic food, nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended xxx

I love their duck curry. Go there and try it for yourself.

Delicious food and very friendly and most courteous service.

Thank You Palm Sugar for a wonderful birthday last night! Service was fantastic, food was A+ and your hospitality was humbling
Shamira Lisel Port-Louis
Beautiful Thai cuisine, authentic and worth every dollar! Friendly service.

Literally the worst Thai I have ever had. I ordered delivery:<br/>*Tom kha had no flavour - had to recook with paste to build on milky coconut water I was provided with <br/>*Green curry was just curry powder with watery coconut milk<br/>*Larb was so dry I couldn’t eat it <br/><br/>Just avoid. So irritated that I spent $60 on inedible swill.

We had our wedding dinner organised here and it was absolutely fabulous. Food was exceptionally good and I must mention that Lynn (the restaurant owner) took so much effort in decorating the place for us and giving us a cozy ambience. I highly recommend this place for any special occasion or even a casual dinner.

Girlfriend was going to be away for her birthday so I decided to take her for a quick dinner to celebrate. She just recently moved to Richmond so we thought we’d take a walk down bridge road and try our luck. <br/><br/>We were definitely not disappointed, cute little Thai restaurant with a nice outdoor area where you can see all the nearby residents walking past with their cute dogs.<br/><br/>At first we walked inside, with the outside temperature being 28 degrees at that time we thought we might sit inside underneath the air conditioner. Unfortunately there was no aircon, inside was hotter than outside. So we ended up sitting outside. <br/><br/>Friendly staff, delicious food and cheap drinks. Would definitely recommend

We tried Palm Sugar last week for the first time after many moons walking past. The decor is classic Thai with elegant touches yet simple. The staff were attentive and well organised. We enjoyed our meal of stir fry and curry, each dish was quite tasty and reasonably priced compared to similar venues. Will be back!

This is one of the better Thai restaurants I have been at. The appetisers are uniquely different and flavoursome. <br/><br/>We tried green and panang curries which were very nice and meat quantities plentiful especially if you like prawns. <br/><br/>Also had a stirfry which flavours of basil shone through. Overall presentation of food is great. <br/><br/>Lemon ice tea is worth trying. Staff service is good <br/><br/><br/><br/>

Am here tonight for the first time and was not disappointed. Love the meal, service was great and it was all reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.

The restaurant looks old and tired. It badly needs a facelift. The service was okay. The food was good but not awesome. Nothing special for me to go back or recommend it to anyone. Not many choices either.

Went there for the first time last night.  Its the best Thai place in and around Richmond, of which there are a good few. The service was great and the food arrived promptly. We had softshell crab, spring rolls , golden bags and taro to start. A green curry, a red curry and Pad Thai.
Paul
Another excellent meal at this friendly Thai restaurant. I had the Duck Red Curry and my wife had the Penang Beef. We shared some money bags which were full of flavour and perfectly crisp. As lovers of Thai food we've eaten countless Thai meals and always come back to this place as the curry is authenticity prepared and the flavours are absolutely spot on.<br/><br/>We are greeted with a friendly face and prompt service from this real suburban gem hidden away on Bridge Road. Definitely recommend you give it a try.

Can I just say upfront that this review is based on my experience.<br/><br/>I took my friend here tonight, even though there was strong reluctance by my friend not to eat here. I love Thai and I thought, well it's on Bridge Rd so it must be reasonable! Mistake no 1.<br/><br/>The restaurant was empty when we arrived, as we were early for dinner so I thought we'd have quicker service. Mistake no 2. This was the slowest service that I've ever encountered at a restaurant. <br/><br/>We ordered 3 entrees, chicken skewers, curry puffs and another dish. All very average. <br/><br/>I ordered massaman beef having eaten it thousands of times and cooked it about as many times. I asked for no potatoes and the curry was full of potatoes and carrots and onion. The curry flavour tasted like sugar. I understand Massaman curry is sweet, but that Is usually because of the pineapple. The colour of this curry was a really pale grey, almost a pasty bone colour. And it tasted awful, really unpleasant. Mistake no 3.<br/><br/>This was the first time that I have not been able to finish my curry, in fact this was one of the first times that I haven't finished a meal. <br/><br/>My friend ordered a Chicken Pad Thai, which was wrapped in an egg omelette. Very unusual, and it was inedible apparently. Although I didn't try it. <br/><br/>I am really saddened that I elected to pay $65 for this meal. This was a really unpleasant experience overall.

I have to say, aside from amazing food and great set up - the staff here are absolutely amazing! I organized a birthday dinner here in the private function space upstairs and the staff were so lovely and accommodating with everything. They set up the private room so gorgeously with tiny table top vase's of orchids along the tables which I adored! At the end of the night they surprised me with a delicious dessert that said happy birthday on it and I couldn't have been more grateful. My friends and I all had an amazing night there and left with VERY full bellies. I can't wait to return again and thank you for your amazing hospitality!
Mark
Food was a bit slow coming to the table (we were starving), however the food was spectacular (had 'the super six" and "roast duck curry". Highly recommend you give it a go.

We've dined in & also had take-away from Palm Sugar. Both times food was very tasty. Service is friendly & the restaurant is inviting and cozy. Happy that they have quite a few gf options and were able to make accomodate no onion/garlic on some dishes. We'll be back!

Unfortunately, we won't be returning here because of the bad service and average food. We went there as a group of 8. The venue had other customers but was not busy. The first main, a pad thai, came out 20 mins before any other main. Then some of the curries came out, which were extremely sweet, and without rice. We asked for the rice after another 20 min wait and then they informed us that they had run out of rice and would be another 20 min wait. We asked to speak with the manager, who apologised but didn't offer any resolution. The rice eventually came out, but it was cold, after the curries had also gone cold. They finally brought out the last main 10 min later, incidentally another pad thai. This was a full hour after the first main was brought out. However, this meal appeared rushed, to the extent that the noodles were still raw. <br/><br/>We asked if they could take the cold rice and the raw pad thai off the bill. They said that they would. After we paid and left, we checked the bill and realised that they did not make any deductions.<br/><br/>We are extremely disappointed. Even though the staff appeared apologetic, we feel that they were not honest. We do not recommend this place to anyone, especially if you're in a group.<br/><br/>**Also, one of us got mild food poisoning the next day.

We fell in love with our entrees, in particular the Bai Yok and the Palm Blossom Dumplings - why would you want to bite into such delicateness? They were almost too cute to eat, like little flowers and fat little pupae (no, neither of us ever thought we'd describe pupae were cute up until we'd had Bai Yok).<br/><br/>As they were both steamed, it added to the subtle softness of the flavours coming through and we agreed that they weren't like your typical dumplings that are usually drenched in oil. Definitely the highlight of the round.
Birdman
A decent Thai option on Bridge Rd. Had the stay skewers which were good as they were grilled instead of deep fried and the chicken Tom yum soup was full of flavour and one of the best I've had. Penang beef also very good and flavoursome. Will definitely be back
Melbournian
Good value, tasty thai food. We order takeaway from here relatively often and it's always nice. We always get the same thing (satay skewers, panang curry, rice, roti), so can't say much about the rest of the menu...but what we get is always really yummy, and they chuck in spring rolls for free when we order over $35 worth. They are always really friendly on the phone and when we pick up.

Thumb up: one of the best Thai restaurant around Melbourne, quite a few dishes you can't find anywhere else. Taste very good and good portion to share.<br/>Thumb down: restaurant a bit small. Not sure if it's the feeling or what, but quite a few times lately I didn't feel the food was as good as before.

Sometimes a meal is a more a transaction to provide sustenance to keep you going. In this case it was a whirlwind dinner prior to a 40 th around the corner Dining room - Nice but could be cosy if full and possibly noisy. We were upstairs and it was quite open. If booking probably the place to be unless there is a noisy function. PRAWN SPRING ROLLS Entree

Came here with hubby.....and loved it!!!. First let me start the review by saying I have never been to Thailand. That said, the food was and is divine. I imagine that the flavours are very authentic. We also like that you can bring you own wine.
Jeff_montgomery_wa
Just like Thailand!. Loved, and I can't say that enough, the food being served. Great service, Thai iced tea just like the backwaters of Bangkok, some entrees to make my face hurt with smiling at them. This is the best sating Thai in Melbourne.
Cous Cous
We won't be going back. I have dinner with 3 friends here on Friday night (30/5).<br/><br/>The service was slow and it took us about 25 minutes to order our drinks.<br/><br/>We ordered 4 mains 2 share - 2 veg, 2 meat, rich and we also said we wanted 2 serves of roti to share.<br/><br/>The roti breads were brought out as large pieces of bread - not chopped. It means people have to manhandle the food to share - not great. They clearly hadn't made it easy for us to share. Most Thai restaurants cut it up. Who wants to tear greasy roti bread with their fingers?<br/><br/>We were VERY unimpressed with the yellow curry vegetarian. half a dozen pieces of veg in a pastry shell. All the liquid had soaked into the pastry. I didn't want pastry. I wanted curry in a bowl. Its not clear on the menu. There were only about 6 vegebtables and 2 or 3 pieces were large bits of al dente potato. It was really awful. So as there were 4 people sharing we teared off a piece of pastry and took one vegetable each.<br/><br/>At no point did the staff check in to see if we needed drinks or more food even though the place was 80% empty (not surprised). We had to wave them down to ask for the bill. <br/><br/>When the bill came we had a gold card (entertainment book) which brought the meal down to $83. We put down $90 and they never brought back change. We waited for about 10 minutes but they clearly decided it was a tip. We let ourselves out.<br/><br/>Shocking place - we won't be back.

Way too noisy. Very painful experience

Yummy! simple menu but delicious (try the prawn, lemongrass and coconut!) very friendly waiters and nice atmosphere!
J
The green curry and pineapple fried rice were the super standout dishes but pud thai very average. Servings smaller than most thai restaurants. The service was friendly but they were pretty slow on a fairly quiet night. we also ordered some coffees after but the waitress said they did not serve coffee and looked puzzled when I pointed out was on the menu.
GoodDineGoodTime
Food above average, cocktails definitely not there strong point. Enjoyed our night there
Nealb
Delicious thai food! Red duck curry was beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed our whole meal. Reasonably priced and they even fill up your water! ;). Will definitely make a return trip!
Anthony B
I want to say I continue to love this place but sadly I can't. Each of the last few times the quality has deteriorated to what is now very standard, often bland attempts at Thai dishes. The signature dumplings are nothing on their past quality and look. I'm not sure when deep fried tofu became a dumpling. But that arrived as one of the 6 dumplings. As did a curry puff. Sort of sums up the lack of passion and new laziness of what was once a great place to experience Thai cuisine. Sad really..

Catherine. We visited this restaurant for the third time last night having really enjoyed it in the past. Unfortunately we won't be returning. We had roti for starters and had to ask for more satay sauce because we were given such a small serve. By the time it arrived, the roti was cold. The restaurant was packed and clearly they could not cope because the service was very slow. The main courses are delicious but the serves incredibly small. We sat upstairs and it was very cold.
BlueToad
Sadly I have to agree with some of the negative reviews. Whilst the food was tasty, it was expensive for small serves. There was a long wait for dishes even though the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived. Food was luke warm which also detracted from the overall experience. The one waiter was friendly and attentive.
Suzanne Murray
The service is very slow with only one waiter. Took a long time just to pay the bill. Food average/ok.

Where is the rest of the menu?. This would have been the worst Thai experience for myself. Ever.<br/><br/>Palm Sugar Royal Thai has the worlds smallest Thai menu, if you only eat Chicken there is 2 options that you can have, and myself, being allergic to seafood means I can't have anything with fish sauce, oyster sauce or shrimp paste, which EVERY menu item had.<br/><br/>I asked for none of the seafood in a Pad Thai and it came out brimming in fish sauce and prawns, lucky I never had a bite and inspected my food as otherwise I would have been very ill.<br/><br/>Most Thai restaurants have a few menu items where they are happy to take out everything "fishy" yet here it seemed impossible. Fish allergies are one of the highest allergies in Thailand and Australia so I am not sure why places can't be accommodating of people with allergies. It's simple, just don't add any of the fishy sauces to your dishes and I will be fine.<br/><br/>It may have been an authentic Thai restaurant yet it was very disappointing for me. The staff though were super friendly and happy, yet they were let down by the kitchen.
Dr Appetite
Worth the wait. Flavourful dishes, especially the duck red curry. However it took a while between getting the entrees and the main course. Probably just recommended ordering mains and skipping the entree.
Fifi
Always consistent. Great food always. we had a vegetarian curry and duck in lychees. always tasty- a bit expensive for what it is, but excellent waiters
Mark
Food was sensational, Service sensational. We asked for fresh cut chilli on the side and they gave us plenty, being chilli freaks it was a great surprise.
Crystal
Yum Yum Yum. Great 3 course meal; selection of dumplings, main and banana fritta desert! Best ice cream I have ever had at a Thai restuarant. <br/>Lovely Service as well!
Hornetspade
Food was cold, small, old and expensive. It had a "left-overs" style. <br/><br/>The "Tiger Prawns" dish came with 5 small frozen cheap Chinese frozen Prawns and canned baby Corn for $22. Very unexciting. Great.<br/><br/>Beef Curry was av.<br/><br/>Service was friendly and almost 5 star.
Blake
Fresh and good quality Thai food! The massaman curry is amazing, the steak chunks are so tender.
Badabooma
Had a great meal here the service is friendly the owner certainly takes pride in what he does. The food is excellent the Pad Thai was tasty & went well with a Chang beer. Great value.

My favourite curries in Melbourne so far.... I'll keep this brief - delicious curries (best i've had in Melbourne to date), cute restaurant and good service. Would recommend it to anyone.
Peter Lyons
Best Thai on Bridge Road - have tried every Thai place. Highly recommend mixed entree, grapow beef and massaman curry
Catriona
Awesome food. Great green curry and Kari curry. Well priced!
Lisa Birch
Amazing! The best green curry I've had since going to Thailand. The Pad Thai was also divine. Extremely pleased.
JohnandAl
Amazing Thai Cuisine that always brings us back.. The best Tom Yum, Red Duck Curry, Massaman Beef and Roti in Melbourne! Very receptive staff too...
Ellen Yan Cheng
Very lovely service, great food, the food presentation was very pretty. Lychee matini was amazing. Like their music too.
Robert
Tasty :). Great food, The duck red curry and massaman was amazing. service is good too
Tans
Do not go here! We had half our food orders arrive plus the other half two hours later!! I have never seen anything like it. When the manager was approached he refused to provide a discount and was aggressive and rude.
Mike R
Nice food. Terrible service. 2 hour gap between main dishes on the same table! And then they said "We've run out of duck"...
Bex295
OK food, overpriced. We got a take-away from here last weekend. The prices are the same for eat-in or takeaway. We ordered the penang curry with beef and the red curry with seafood. The penang curry was lovely, very flavoursome and rich. However the red curry lacked flavour and the seafood was mainly chewy white items. The prawns were nice and one piece of white fish was also nice but I couldn’t eat the other items. We paid $42 for 2 dishes with rice, and I think it was overpriced, especially for takeaway. The staff were nice and helpful.
BH
Not great.. 1. Pad Pow Krow, a beef and chili dish served usually on a skillet, flavours were fine, beef was tough, same as others have commented on this site.<br/>2. Massamum curry, nice with slow cooked soft beef, quite tasty.<br/>3. Pad thai, ok, but with a fishy, oyster sauce aftertaste.<br/>4. Roti, reheated, dry , tough, even less impressive than roti I have had from the supermarket. Very very very ordinary roti.<br/>Service was ok, prices a little above where they should be.<br/>Ambience not bad.<br/>Agree with Ben, better thai out there. Won't return.
Ben Gilmore
The starters where nice but the food took ages to arrive and wasn't hot when it did. The beef was tough and roti was reheated ... There are better Thai resturant in Richmond .
FoodMe
Not traditional, but so good. Staff are all very nice, has mood lighting and keeps me craving for more Palm Sugar regularly.<br/>Duck and lychee curry is easily my favourite meal there. From what I know, it's very far from being traditional, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it every other time I'm there.<br/>Collection of cocktails are interesting, some great, some average.<br/><br/>Tasty food, this is a very good option. In need of strictly traditional Thai and you'll be disappointed.
The New Guy
Patchy, but tasty.. Everything was delish. The selection was a bit limited; we had to ask for some vegetables, but they were good.<br/><br/>Pandan chicken was tasty, but, like the Penang curry, was a bit chewy. <br/><br/>A couple of things were a smidge cold: roti & prawn spring role thingy - pity.<br/><br/>Service was a bit patchy, but it didn't matter.
LML
Delicious!. Amazing Penang curry.
Willow
Praise thee dumplings!. I LOVE the "Kuntook" dumplings and the Larb Gai salad. I have always received polite and prompt service. Palm Sugar has become a regular treat for me.
Lalin Ranatunga
The food was excellent. My friend and I both loved it. Only downside is the size of the place. I went on a Tuesday. And it felt cramped up. But otherwise great atmosphere and service. It was great.
Laura Edwards
Thai green curry...amazing!. This is the best Thai green curry that I have had in Melbourne. The coconut rice is wonderful. And the service that I have had on the two occasions that I have been has just been perfect! This is a small intimate dining room, that manages to be family friendly and also romantic at the same time.
Cas Bilston
Had the duck and lychee red curry, which the duck was fantastic and tender. The coconut rice left a bit to be desired though. Will try another dish as the vegetables and spices were very Fresh and tasty.
Traveller
Have eaten here a lot. Disappointing recently but may be one off night? Have the prawn spring rolls. Also like the the choo chee seafood curry and the penang curry.
Jojo
Terrible service- waited 1.5 hr for meal<br/>Soggy roti bread<br/>Chewy meat. cheap fatty cuts used<br/>Would not recommend!!
Mattoo Ferguson
Bad taste in the mouth:-(. We chose to eat in this time as we had only experianced takeaway at Palm Sugar which we'd found very tasty. We ordered two mains of curry, jasmin rice and roti with peanut sauce. One curry was very tasty but the lamb was very chewy. The other curry was quite bland and left a taste in the mouth that I still cant describe or identify! The roti was thick and dense and the peanut sauce was almost cetainly out of a jar. Overall quite unsatisfied and have chosen not to eat there again. I hope for them it was just an off night.
Steve Goddard
Handy little restaurant with excellent food. The sweet and sour duck was a winner and my friend enjoyed the curry as well. Very reasonably priced and the service was very good as well. Only negative I can think of is that the walls reverberate the sound generated by noisy patrons. Not the best place to come for a quiet feed but still definitely worth coming for another occasion.
Eggman
Where's my dinner?. No hello and no menu for 20 minutes.<br/><br/>Menu is offered.<br/><br/>People who arrived after us were eating by the time we left after waiting for another 20 minutes.<br/><br/>Can't comment on the food because I didn't have any :(
Chefosaurus
Great Thai.... The $35 banquet is a great way to go for a group visit!. The entree was a variety of 6 dumplings with a spicy chilli dipping sauce. Really beautifully presented and lovely garnish! We had 3 mains - a red curry, a green chicken curry and a beef with broccoli. All hit the spot except the beef and broccoli was a little tough for my liking. Desert was lovely with banana fritters. If yor in the area pop in it was buzzing for a Wednesday night!
