I came there on a ANZAC night. It looked busy from outside but the customer service was quick and immediate. There is a large variety of foods served in this restaurant and most things are well-cooked. I ordered the duck spring rolls, the set contains 4 rolls. The rolls are fresh and tastes good, I really love the duck, so soft and fresh. I love the peanut sauce too. I wanted to order more of these but unfortunately I would be full of my large orders. I also have the chicken salad and the soup. They are good too. The tastes are quite authentic and well balanced, not too spicy, not too salty or not too sweet. The last thing I ordered was the fried banana ice cream. At first I thought that was fried banana-flavored ice cream when ordering, but it was actually fried banana with vanilla ice cream. The dish was more than I expected, very nice. The fried banana was crispy and hot inside, very tasty. It was a good combination of the hot fried banana melting with ice cream in mouth. I generally enjoyed the meal, and will definitely come back there for dinner with friends one day. The customer service is very good and nice - Bonus point. Highly recommend this fancy restaurant to new or returning customers.
Delicious Vietnamese food for the locals! Cheap and quick to order with the byo option makes this place a must when you need that weeknight asian treat. Would highly recommend the prawn springrolls and combination fried rice noodles which are my absolute favs ❤
I’ve wanted to visit this place for a while so I grabbed some t/a dinner here and the service was friendly and welcoming.
I ordered some vegan fried rice which was excellent, really tasty. No meat,no eggs just lots of veggies and rice. Yummo
Then I ordered some rice noodles w chicken and veggies. This was also really tasty and the noodles cane separately to the chicken and veggies. The chicken was really large chicken breast pieces w a lot of fresh veggies.
This place was amazing value and it’s definitely worth a visit!
This is one of my absolute favourite places to eat viet food! Try their com bo luc lac (diced beef on rice) and avocado smoothie!
Generous portion size and friendly staff always make the experience a whole lot better :)
My favourite. Have been going here for years and it is consistently delicious. I love the salt and pepper squid and the plum pork. Also the rice paper rolls.
I’ve been eating here for years, it has been our go to Viet place for at least 15years.
I remember a good 10years ago, myself and 2 mates dropped in for lunch and cost nothing more than $30 for all of us.
The food is great and the service is avg, but you can look past that for the quality of the food 🍲
One of the few Vietnamese restaurants that serve dry noodles rather than just pho. Actually pho is a small part of its expansive menu. We ordered their dry noodles and really happy with the dishes. Noodles are chewy and seasoned nicely. Too bad their meat slices are dry.
Food 1: don’t come here for pho or bun ... maybe they have their special dishes but definitely not pho or bun 🤷🏻♀️
Atmosphère 1: typical Vietnamese restaurant ... everything is sticky 😂
Service 1.5: attentive & friendly
Okay, now, if you're checking this review, it means you're one of two people:
'Damn, so hungry, in Richmond, googled this, let's see if it's good.'
Or.
'What the heck is a ha long? Is it a noodle?'
Alright, let me light this up by saying come here son. Legitimately, the food, the service, boy you should uppercut yourself in the head if you deny the food tastes good, and is cheap.
Feed 2 hungry people for under $50? Including entrees and drinks? Yeap.
Cool interior decor to distract you while you consider Pho or Rice? Yeap.
Walked on in with the wife about 11am today, checking out the competition around the area before I saw the tea cups on the table.
Good sign, oh my gods the tenderness that enveloped my normally death-gripped wallet, too fresh, too real.
So we grabbed a seat, scoped through the menu, and my wife is picky as heyall when it comes to the noodles. Their service game so on point they explained what else they could cram into the pho for her.
Man, the service so real just ordering a coffee they ask what you want with it, how you like it, explaining it like it was a damned medical procedure. I love it. It was like a damned opera it was beautiful.
But, onto the food now, cos we got fly-kicked like a mortal kombat movie written by Charlie Sheen and Quentin himself. Massive spring rolls. Lots of fresh salad. Sauce. Come on son, stop it. The game was serious.
After we destroyed the spring rolls, we received the glorious basins of Pho.
'Basin?'
Yeah. Basin. Like a tub of soup, more noodles in the bowl than should be consumable by a human who ain't Kobayashi (google this black-holed stomach monster), fresh white onions, and near mountains of beef that when you put it in your damned doubting mouth, melts and makes you feel like your grandma is telling you a bed time story.
So, mang, all in all, seriously?
I went to fork out the big notes, nah man, brother behind the counter was all triple-checking when I said 'It can't be that damned cheap'.
It was.
Nuff said. Get here. Cheers.
Mitochondria Powerhouse
+4
I think I may have discovered my new go-to Vietnamese restaurant on Victoria Street. My fellow mitochondria and I consumed...
- Vegetable spring rolls: these were a little larger than your standard spring roll but quite good. We were provided with plenty of lettuce and herbs to go along with them. The Nuoc Cham was good too.
- Vegetable rice paper rolls: these were quite small but very tasty. They came with the standard hoisin/peanut/chilli sauce
- Fried rice: came in quite a small serving and was a little stingy on the ingredients...not sure if egg came as an extra as we were asked if we would like it to be present
- Water spinach w/ garlic sauce: small serving again but still nice and garlicky
- Mongolian beef: they all must use the same sauce because it tasted exactly the same as elsewhere, main difference was that it contained a larger amount of meat than other places
I think what we got was pretty reasonable for the price, and was on the higher end of quality. The venue itself was very clean but the only downside was that the waitstaff were inattentive; it was difficult to attract their attention, and they had a habit of walking away when being spoken to.
Delicious
Thanks delicious spring rolls, fried rice and beef salad. Very clean food. Will eat here again
Prompt and friendly and well priced
Dropped by here with the kids to grab some dinner and the first thing that struck me was the lack of Vietnamese customers. Now I'm quite fussy when it comes to pho which I eat on a near daily basis. The stock was spot on but was missing the various textures of tendon and tripe. The kids missed out on their avocado smoothies so were a little sad. All in all, the service was good, the restaurant clean and the offerings geared a little more towards a Western palate.
Hubby and I have been coming here since 2008.... After a few year hiatus we came back today and were not disappointed! Yes it was a shame not to have the crab claw but the rest was as amazing as we remembered. You can pay twice as much for much less elsewhere. Worth the hike to Richmond for us!
Good attentive service, nice decor, tolerant of our children :)
Pros: great pho broth, awesome rice paper rolls, and they take cards.
Cons: little bit westernized (No tendon or tripe in our combination pho).
Great food at reasonable price. We had grilled chicken on broken rice and vermicelli with grilled pork and spring rolls. They were served generously and tasted awesome. We also ordered ice coffee which is sweeter than the one in the west but nevertheless tasted good too.
After work dinner turned into #tofeedfour and boy were we hungry! We shared the entrees of Combination Spring Rolls & Pulled Pork Rice Paper Rolls. Both were enjoyed by all but bigger sized spring rolls were needed, especially when you have the accompanying lettuce cups.
For main we ordered 2 x Grilled Pork & Spring Roll Bun, Beef with Lemongrass & Chili and Beef with Blackbean sauce. Safe to say meals were demolished & there were not any complaints. I'll also point out it cost everyone $25 each and that included a glass of wine each. Cheap and yum.. what a find!
Deserves better than a 3.9 rating. The coleslaw dishes were fresh and crunchy; the salt and pepper tofu was the best we've had at any Vietnamese restaurant (including forays into Footscray and Sunshine). The pork vermicelli dish (chargrilled and smokey) was also the best we've ever had; and the lemon chicken was crunchy and delicious. There were 7 of us: we were all full at the end of the meal (we had other dishes not listed here - all of the same high quality), 4 of us had grog; and yet the total was just $162. Excellent value.
Went for the lunch special egg noodles and crispy chicken, it was no frills but tasted good especially for the $10.50 price tag. Hadn't eaten on Victoria street for a long time but Ha Long might bring me back more often 👍
what.epieats were craving for a Vietnamese food, so many options around North Richmond area and ended up try the closest one to the train station.
The restaurant was not that fancy but the table was clean and the customer service was very attentive which always a good thing to note.
what.epieats ordered rice vermicelli with spring rolls and grilled pork for $11.00.
The spring rolls were so fresh, crunchy and perfectly cooked. The grilled pork was tasty.
This rice vermicelli had a great value of money and quality, recommended!
Unfortunately, they didn't provide any chilli oil on the table like other places. You need to ask the wait staffs to bring it.
Overall, we enjoyed the food and the place.
Cheap and tasty Vietnamese. We popped in for dinner late on a Saturday night and the place was full to the brim. The staff still found a spot for us and we were served our dinner in 15min! Just had the sugar cane prawn vermicelli and the pork and spring roll vermicelli - both were delicious and huge servings. Can't go past a quick and tasty meal for under $25
I really liked it here! It's not your normal 'viet' food but street vendor style dishes! Some local dishes from Ha Long bay brought back memories of my boat trip to Ha long bay and it's beautiful coloured caves!
We stopped in to Ha Long Bay on a Saturday evening on our way in to the CBD and experienced good food and prompt service in a family friendly environment.
One of the points of difference here is the rather extensive list of menu items.
We sampled a variety of dishes with our spring rolls (fried and fresh), pork chop on broken rice and grilled pork over vermicelli being the standouts.
Both food and alcoholic drinks are fairly priced.
Would not hesitate to return again.
Great food for a great price! With delicious Roast Duck rice paper rolls that can sometimes be hard to find on Victoria Street and a Grilled Pork Bun that left me wanting more Ha Long Bay is a terrific little eatery that I would surely return too.
My all time favourite Vietnamese restuarant on Victoria street. Salt and pepper squid, Mongolian beef and prawn spring rolls are all stand outs. Clean and staff are friendly.
It's hard to stand out amongst a streetful of great Vietnamese restaurants.
From service to food, Ha Long Bay has done everything right.
Yummy pho and broken rice. Wide range of alcoholic beverage choice makes this place a popular spot for catch ups.
Our fav Vietnamese restaurant on Victoria street. Food always fresh and delicious, very friendly staffs. Salted calamari and prawn spring rolls are the best here!
Came to visit this lovely green restaurant with a group of friends. The meals were delightful to gaze at and delectable to graze at. I higly recommend the special duck which is coated with prawn and sesame seeds, resting on a bed of sauted crunchy Chinese Brocoli. I ordered a pork mince and prawn soup which was pleasantly underated and easy to eat with its humble flavours. I felt like i was eat the salad equivalent of soup, gentle on flavour and made u feel spiritually healthy. To top it off a short share course of Qual in salt and pepper dressing with five spice mix and capsicum diped in a s+p dip for extra zing and bite, THEN was down with a custard apple smoothie. Lastly the service was great with what seems like the owner was very friendly and asked for feedback, of course only positive things to say. Good restaurant.
Ha Long Bay is a Vietnamese cafe styled restaurant with clean amenities and an amazing consistent menu that offer something for everyone. The Vietnamese chicken coleslaw is one of the best i've had and the pho is flavoursome with all the trimmings. Spring rolls, rice paper rolls are made fresh and all menu items at a cheap price it is worth cruising the large menu and trying a range of items. Well worth a visit
Popped in for the lunch special of prawn and pork sticky rice noodle soup. Really good for $10 and the Vietnamese iced coffee was delicious! Friendly staff too.
Possibly the most consistent of all the Vietnamese restaurants on this part of Victoria St. It's always popular as a result (and can get noisy) but there's usually a fast turn around and service is very efficient to facilitate that!
Menu can be somewhat daunting - 10 or so choices under chicken, 10 under pork and so on. But they're usually the same with a couple of variations (i.e. chicken with chilli and lemon grass/beef with chilli and lemon grass etc) so it's a classic place to decide on what meat or veg you want and work out your choice form there.
Can err on the side of bland if you make the wrong call but the special duck is great as are the Vietnamese coleslaws. And love the (very) fat sesame toast for starters!
Really solid Vietnamese food. Fresh, tasty and efficient service. We had the combination egg noodle soup which was was served in an enormous bowl filled with a selection of meats - delicious. We also had the fried rice noodles with beef which was superb.
Always a fan of Richmond when in Melbourne, dinner was organised at this restaurant on bustling Victoria Street. Competition is fierce here if you have a hankering for Vietnamese cuisine. We were clearly spoilt for choice.
Our local host is a regular here so suggested we bring a couple bottles of wine as BYO charges was very very cheap.
Upon entering, the place was casual, cheerful and vibrant with diners clearly enjoying their food.
We quickly placed our orders, all to share of course.
Entrees and mains included san choi bao, springrolls, salt and pepper tofu, fried rice with salted fish, sugarcane prawns noodle salad, salt and pepper squid and flat rice noodles (hor fun).
Meals were well priced and for what we received, quality wasn't compromised.
Every dish was tasty. Just a note that this place offers Chinese cuisines as well as Vietnamese cuisine, refer above for examples of dishes ordered.
Service was rather mediocre, something that requires improvement, especially if you want to stand out amongst the competitions.
I would return, because at the end of the day, I travel for food first and foremost.
Tonight my partner and I were heading to Victoria St Richmond for Vietnamese. Of course we have our favorites however Minh Minh our usual haunt was closed. Taking a chance we decided to check out Ha Long Bay given it was 1) open and 2) well populated by both local Vietnamese community as well as other locals.
Rice drop noodles with crab and pork hock (Banh canh cua gio heo).
YUM!!!
I brought a serving to take away. Portion is same as dine in.
You can taste the crab flavor. A nice thin soup base with no trace of corn starch!
My go to place for a bowl of banh canh cua.
Cheap and cheerful sums up this place very well! We had the Vietnamese pork spring rolls with lettuce, and the beef pho! It was all delicious!
Have been coming here for many years. Nothing fancy just consitantly good, tradtional vietnamese. Great flavours and generous portions. My favourite dish is not on the menu but I always order a rice noodle soup with fish. Staff are always accomodating and generally friendly. Have always found service to be very efficient.
I love vietnamese food and i love eating in this restaurant. Food is tasty. Salt & pepper squid is crispy. And service is fast. Prices are very good. Could do with a bit of a decor update thought.
What a delight to find a restaurant with such reasonable prices and good tasty food. I liked the decor - the coloured lanterns were beautiful and lovely pictures on the walls. The restaurant was busy and everyone was talking and still I could hear my friends easily (one of my big bugbears with restaurant dining is where it's too noisy to hold a conversation).
I went the Chinese route for dinner and had the prawn sesame toasts - served on fried noodles I think. They were good. Followed by sweet & sour pork. Our coupon deal was just for entre & mains but seeing the prices were so reasonable we all had dessert. I had a good old banana fritter for $5. The batter and banana were great. And I'm not a huge fan of ice cream, but whatever this was was amazing. Extremely creamy.
A personal favorite on Victoria St. The duck rice paper rolls are just amazing. The quail is also very good. Service is quick and the restaurant has a very modern feel to it.
Delicious food!! Pretty good service, outstanding food!
Have been to a few places in Victoria street, however this place would have to be one of the best. Loved every bite.
Good choice amongst many. Have been to this Vietnamese restaurant many times and love it. Good fresh food served quickly and pretty good service. Very reasonably priced especially for lunch.
My only gripe is that they wrap the napkin around the cutlery SO DAMN TIGHT that the napkin breaks up and your left with shredded napkin. Just place the cutlery in tins with napkins alongside.
Rice paper rolls with duck breast. This makes a nice change from the usual prawn and pork combo which I always seem to order. The duck was relatively lean and juicy.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
+3.5
Regardless of whether how hot or cold the weather is, I always order a custard apple mocktail. I love it. It’s like a thick Slurpee but made with custard apples. I’ve always tried to look for tinned custard apple, because I’m fairly sure that that’s the way they make this drink. But I still haven’t been able to find them in the Asian shops. The other drink is a three colour drink that Mr Strong and the Lawyer tends to order.
Salt and pepper squid for life!!!. This restaurant has been a family favourite for ages! We usually go here and order a whole banquet of food and my favourite is obviously the salt and pepper squid with the vietnamese 'salsa' and crunchy noodle things. Also a fan of their roast quail and fried whole flounder.
This is the definite go to place for friendly and fast service at great prices!
Ordered the JA-Long special (grilled pork & spring rolls on rice vermicelli). If you order the deluxe you'll get a small Tom Yum soup as well - DELICIOUS ($16) Fast, friendly service, tasty food. Well recommended.
Loved this place. Came across it accidentally and glad we gave it a go. Fresh food, great flavours and big servings. The broken rice and pork vermicelli are a must.
Ha long till next time?. The phô was phônomenal ;)
Very nice!. Went there for lunch, (we are on a mission to find the best Vietnamese on Victoria St), and were a bit put off as only 1 other table in there. However, ordered pork spring rolls (our standard benchmark item) and a vermicelli dish with grilled pork & spring rolls (excellent) and lemongrass & chilli chicken, which was as authentic as any I have had in Vietnam. The decor is very pretty, the restaurant is spotless, and the service good. Additional to the above, we ordered a banana fritter(with 2 forks!!) and the bill was $39.50. This included corkage! By the time we left, the restaurant was 80% full! with good reason - we will be back - soon!
Can't wait to go back. I was invited here for a group dinner and was treated to a beautiful banquette with varied dishes and beautiful flavours. The staff were attentive and passionate about their food. I can't wait to return.
Disappointed by the service (meal & drink missed yet billed). We have been coming here for over 8 years and never had an issue. New owners maybe?
The best on Victoria Street. Our favourite Vietnamese on Victoria Street. We have travelled to Vietnam multiple times and can vouch for its authenticity.
Consistently great food.
Also a clean restaurant....we did frequent an incredibly popular Vietnamese up the road towards the bridge, but it was filthy!! This one is spotless.
Highly recommend. An indication is the number of dinners eating there any night of the week!!
HLB - Always consistent. No better way to be than that
Fried Chicken with XO, BBQ Pork, Salt & Pepper Squid, Chef's special duck, their Pho also good for a winter warmer... All of it brilliant.
Been going here a bit lately due to working not far away and it's certainly one of our group favourites. There once a week, usually Thurs... Will make the drive when I need good Vietnamese once I'm done working nearby.
Delicious banh canh :) Sou.... Delicious banh canh :)
Soup was full of flavour and garnish was complete w squid, pork, prawn, quail egg.. as good as mums home made! Shh
Love it: Food is always Great. Highly recommended.* Food here always taste great. & Prices are reasonable.
Good service and great varity of dishes
* One of the best Vietnamese restaurants on Victoria Street Richmond
Enjoy
Definitely recommend...!. Great Vietnamese foods. Their pancake is delicious...and huge. The fried whole flounder is to die for. Have tried nearly every item on their menu and I cannot fault anything. Prices are competitive for Victoria Street eateries and the service is good. A little bit dirty but could be because it's always been busy when I've been there.
NB: It has since been slightly refurbished and cleaned up so definitely an improvement.
Great little resturant!! Fantastic food, great prices, fantastic service!! I'm going back again!
GREAT FOOD! BIG SERVES! CHEAP PRICES! :). * Highly recommended.
* Food taste great.
* Large serving sizes.
* Prices are cheap.
* One of the best restaurant on Victoria Street Richmond.
This place is cheap and delicious. Try to salt and pepper quail.
A favourite for us when we just want a quick easy meal on Vic St. The beef in Malaysian sauce is our go-to dish - tasty, spicy and just the right size for the two of us.
The food at Ha Long Bay is always good and always filling, the decor is pretty simple but the friendly staff do make up for it, service can be very slow even when it isn't peak time, all in all I would eat here again.
Mixed feelings about this restaurant. Chicken coleslaw to start very tasty if a little sweet. Spring rolls very average. The chicken with vegetable stir fry was tasteless. With so many competitors I wouldn't go back
Living just off Victoria St, my wife and I have tried pretty much every Vietnamese restaurant in the area, Ha Long Bay is hands down, the winner.
Authentic food, low price, BYO and friendly staff are just a few reasons we head here weekly.
Definitely try the prawn spring rolls, noddle soups or any of the rice vermicelli dishes - you won't be disappointed.
Good food and decent customer service. Reasonable pricing too. Food is authentic and has not bring westernize to cater for non Asian. Highly recommended
Consistent, reliable, great value food. Can't complain with that!
Def one of my fav Viet places in Melbourne. Service is quick n simple, menu is super tasty, portions r great n is quite cheap. Can't ask for anything more. Reccomend the pho for sure!
Disgusting food! Terrible service!!. Service was very poor. The waitress couldn't speak a word english and got the order wrong a couple of times. The pho noodle soup was inedible. Rice paper rolls taste old. Stir fry mix veges were tasteless even with MSG. Braised beef with vemecerlli was quite nice but I still wouldn't go back ever again.
Fantastic food. Great tasting food cheap prices and very generous portions I cannot fault this place for what it is A++++
Delicious, generous and well priced. Highlights include salt and pepper squid, Malaysian beef and grilled beef in vine leaves. Will definately be back!
Great food at reasonable prices. Really efficient service. Salt and pepper squid = excellent. Fried ice cream = excellent. Victoia Street fave for sure!
Adding it to my favourites!. It's taken me a long time to step out of my tried and true favourites on Victoria St, i.e, Binh Minh, Pho Chu The & Pacific House. However, I am so glad I decided to have an explore. Ha Long Bay is simple vietnamese food done well. The service is so great, in particular there is a young guy who works there who is so sweet and helpful. There salt and pepper calamari is great, in-fact I was much more impressed by theirs than Binh Minh's. Their pho is delicious and fragrant and all of the entrees come out fresh and steaming hot. I love it here and I'm glad I've been able to add it to my favourite Victoria St spots. (Also very reasonably priced!)
1* off for the fact that they don't take card, which is ridiculous..you have to do bank transfer! Seriously! Anyway, $2 corkage is great, duck was crispy and moist, the bean shoot stir-fry is worth it itself, so is the soup..anyway, it's been 11 years since I first visited and it's still as good.
The best Peking duck in town. Reasonable price come with quality food. Must try this out if you are Chinese food lovers 😋
I came back here many times to enjoy the true taste of Peking Duck, which only can be sought in the whole city.
The last time been here was quite a long waiting for seats and the food was kind of more oily than previous. Otherwise, there was nothing to complain about…
Recommend peking duck 🦆 The best
Foods so Yummy
Service not bad but I understood about not enough staff . This restaurant so busy not bad service But about foods no complain!!!!!
Set menu of pecking duck is so cheap and delicious. Love pecking duck with pancakes, spicy chili with bean sprouts, and duck soup. The best restaurant of pecking duck in my heart. ❤️
Duck was crispy but could have done with more pancakes for the Peking duck as part of the duck set menu ($65). Order extra noodles ($8) if you're hungry to go with noodles that come with the set menu. Gets busy so best to book.
old kingdom dishing out an old classic - peking duck - and they do it well!
you can get a whole course meal from ordering just the one duck - theyll utilise every bit of the duck and serve it up for you! no wastage!
super tasty and speedy service!
you will need to book ahead to make sure you get a seat! really great for family gatherings as they can cater for large groups!
peking duck at its finest!
