We visited on Saturday and I must say - best food I’ve had in Richmond. Generous servings and beautifully cooked steak. My meal was out later than my friends but I wasn’t too worried about it - your friendly bar manager sorted us out with a couple of espresso martini’s in lieu of my late meal. Will be returning, thanks!
Awesome spot for a beer or meal. The pub steak with mash is the best pub meal in Richmond.
Great space with cozy fire, amazing food too terrace and wonderful wine list. Our new regular!
Absolutely amazing food and even better service! We came here with a group of 15 for a hens party and they were more than accommodating with helping us split the bill and recommending us drinks - and even making sure the bride was always with a refreshment. Thanks especially to Georgie who made our night so easy and enjoyable
Amazing food wine and exceptional service, will definitely be back !
Had the best meal and the best service. Ordered the market fish which was cooked perfectly and came with an excellent salad of peas, fennel and snow peas. Sides (peas & bacon, chips) were good. Excellent wine recommendation. Both the young women who served our table were stand outs in the hospitality industry - great fun, informal, knowledgeable and attentive.
Amazing Pub. One of the best in Richmond. The food is always amazing - every menu item i've had is great. The bolognese jaffle and the Crudo are the stand outs, but the steak etc is so good too.
Cool venue, 2 levels plus outdoor rooftop.
There house Pinot noir is my favourite! I have no idea what brand but it goes down well!!
The food here is always so good! And they change there menu each season! Which is good when you want something different but bad if you loved the menu the season before !
Went here for a casual team lunch yesterday and we all very much enjoyed our meals. I had the pork chops and no complaints from me. Will be back to try the steaks next time.
Came here for their $18 steak night on Wednesdays. Meat was cooked perfectly and was quite juicy. The chips were really nice too with a side of aioli. Overall, very worth it.
Will be back to try more of their other dishes.
Possibly the best steak night I've ever had in Melbourne. $18 for a perfectly cooked steak with amazing sauces, plus great chips. The staff were really attentive too, didn't just dump the food and run, they asked which mustards/relishes etc. Noticeable difference!
I’ve been to Wednesday night steak night here a few times, and for $18 - boy do these guys get it right!!! Simple things done well. Steak (if you don’t mind your steak being cut up for you!) with chips and a nicely dressed rocket salad. Recommend booking on a Wednesday instead of just expecting a table, as it gets busy!
Great drinks options too.
Took Codalicious here for our anniversary. Venue is great. Nice little roof top bar, not much of a view though, with a happy hour (half priced mojitos!) is worth a pre meal visit. The meals were great, although two mains and two sides was too much food (our fault). The roast chook was tender and sensational. The steak was perfectly cooked and a great cut (rump cap). Other reviewers had suggested the braised peas and bacon (we thought they over rated them. They weren’t awesome). The cos lettuce was sensationally dressed and really tasty. Will be back there over the summer months.
I was so impressed by my visit to this pub, leading to the 5/5 rating. Immediately met with fantastic service from the get go. Really extensive menu and about 5 SPECIALS FOR THE DAY showing how this establishment cares for variety as well as sourcing seasonal fresh food. Had a pint of cider and was so happy with the options went for a cocktail, which was phenomenal. The pork schnitzel... I will never forget and will be coming back just for this. Crunchy, tender and tasty crispy pork with slaw and HOUSEMADE HP SAUCE. Bravo Union House, you are doing everything right 💖
I think this was the best steak dish I've ever had. The bar menu one. Whoa. Steak was cooked well done as requested and wasn't dry at all. Some nice crunchy chargrilled bits too and the steak sauce was so good. Mash was on point too. No greens which is alright but some broccoli would've made it even better! I hope the next time I go back its just as good!
Wonderful venue. Came here with the family, very friendly service. We sat upstairs on the roof top. Amazing steaks, came out in good time, super tender and well seasoned. Good beers on tap too. his was a first time so will have to come back and try more things on the menu!
Best pub in Melbourne, been here several times by now. Good wine list, great menu! The pub steak is hands down the best one out there and the eel sandwich is a stroke of genius! I will return:)
Lovely staff, nice decor. Steak is delish & they do a fab aperol spritz. Even though the menu is small, everything is well presented & tasty.
Visited on steak night. Steaks were delicious and well priced. Staff seemed like they were still finding their feet but were friendly and welcoming. Nice local pub. Recommended!
A Delight Among the Drudgery of Drunk Food.
Firstly, as a rule, I follow in vain of the New York Times by visiting a restaurant three times before delivering my final review. Sometimes it’s an arduous task. Other times, it’s a delight.
Union House on Swan Street in Richmond opened to much fanfare – the blokes behind it coming from strong hospitality ilk here in Melbourne. It did not disappoint.
The kitchen focus on platting up not just pub classics. The entrée and snacks on offer are modern and technique heavy but arrive simply executed. Soused grapes essentially dressed in their own juices, with rye twists that look like strewn bow ties, and crumbled goats cheese. Salty and crispy Mortadella tossed with smoked tomatoes tastes like the perfect bacon sandwich – without the regret.
The steak is sublime and seasoned that tad too much, the way it should be.
On a side note, have kitchens forgotten about seasoning of late? We know salt isn’t good for us but we want it anyway.
If we wanted to be healthy we’d have stayed home and prepped a weeks worth of brown rice, poached chicken and steamed broccoli – the absolute despair of cuisine. So devoid of flavour and enjoyment is this meal (if you could call it that) that you can feel the calories running away from you. Perhaps, after all, that is its purpose.
Back to the rump-cap. Served medium rare with Kohlrabi remoulade, a small victory in its own right, and a few oak lettuce leafs. Accompanying the steak is not one but two sauce boats - Pepper sauce and Béarnaise. Both so buttery that, if it were socially acceptable (or possibly yet, behind closed doors), you could bath in. Order chips, show no restraint damnit, and dip them in both boats.
The braised peas and bacon, albeit humble, are the underdog on the menu. Each spoon is like throwing on another Uniqlo puffer jacket. Warm.
The banana split is a real treat, though I would dare suggest caramelising the banana to add depth. The peach and vanilla cannoli’s are not to be missed either. Order more than two to be polite when dining with others, then eat them all yourself.
This is food that is about flavour. It is not for fancy edible flowers, nor your instagram feed – though the pubs’ restrained fit-out does help lend a nice backdrop should you feel so inclined to share with your followers.
Follow with a bottle of Pooley Pinot Noir from Tasmania or finish the richness of the whole affair with a strong Shiraz by Eperosa.
5/5 urbanspoons.
I'm a Richmond local and have been waiting for something like Union House to open for a long time. Swan street has offered the community food and drinks at two ends of an overpriced scale - underwhelming pub food at steep prices or pretension on a plate in a stiff environment. Finally, we have top quality food at reasonable prices. What genius thunk that up?!
I have only praise for the food that comes out of that kitchen. I'm also a big fan of the cocktails on tap (Rum Punch and Palomas at the moment), the wine list has everything from the traditional to the modern (yes, I'm talking natty wines from small-batch producers around Victoria). I'm not a beer drinker so I can't really comment on that, other than to say, they have beer taps, they look icy cold, clearly cold brews are on offer.
You can have a casual meal in the public bar or if you want table service you can head to the dining room upstairs. The staff up there have been particularly attentive and knowledgeable about suggesting the right wine to pair with our orders. Oh and there's a rooftop that traps the sun all day and makes a great sunset spot.
Top dishes for me: Smoked eggplant entree, BBQ Prawns, diamond clams and fennel, ricotta dumplings, rockling burger, and the rump cap is divine (or should I say, bovine), comes with a couple of different sauces and heaps of sides options. Oh, and on the weekend they do a 'meat up' which changes every week but is always worth checking out.
Clearly, i live nearby and I frequent this place a lot. I highly recommend that you do too. It would seem i haven't taken any pictures of the food, which is a real shame because the ones on this page are not doing it justice at all!
The Pub Colada is a more refreshing piña colada- delish! Ordered the weekend meet up crackling pork and it was cooked perfectly! Split between 2 and there was still plenty left over. So much crackling too!!!
Great new gastro pub addition to Richmond. Venue is spacious and offers a range of atmospheres from bar, to restaurant to rooftop courtyard. The menu is also far more than the standard Pub grub. For main I ordered the fish of the day (which was salmon) which came with braised silverbeet and toasted hazelnut sauce. We also shared a side of the peas and bacon. The salmon was cooked perfectly with a fantastic crispy skin and went well with all of the accompaniments.
New places often spring up without an obvious explanation. I am often fascinated by the amount of due diligence owners conduct before opening a new cafe, restaurant, bar or other casual eatery. There are some inexplicable openings. Naturally they lead to closing in quick time.
For example there is a burger joint that opened on Swan Street that took longer to renovate, than the time it was actually trading for. Whether the reviews were accurate or not, it was empty every time I walked by. They opened across the road from a flashy, large branch of Grill’d, that was popular and cheap. To open across the road you need to be confident your product is better, and resilient enough to see it through.
Further down Swan Street, in the old Union Dining, a new bar has sprung up. I see eye to eye with whoever opened the now named, Union House. Only months before, Catherine mentioned how the food at most pubs in Richmond is too similar on the menu, and not differentiated enough in terms of quality. It seems to me that Union House identified this gap and acted on it.
Newly opened. Interesting decor. Still trying to decide whether I like it or not. Good selection of beers on tap. Knowledgeable staff and friendly. Will Be back.
Just what Richmond needs - a warm, welcoming local! Great selection of food from share plates to hearty mains. Coupled with a well put together and affordable wine list this is the perfect place to while a way an hour, a day or maybe a whole weekend!
I’ve chose this pub due to high reviews, and satisfied me, specially with great atmosphere and vibe. I am one the fan of pub foods, and can tell this one is one of the good one. Steak was so soft and juicy, and price of drinks are good as well.
Thanks 😊
Most satisfying steak I've ever had.
The sirloin steak W mash and pepper sauce sideblinded all three of us and we all concluded that this had to be one of the best steak we've had in a long time.
Also great ambiance and service.
The chips were so good. Here's the empty plate. Was too hungry to stop and take a photo and the hand went from bowl to mouth too often and fast.. got a quick photo. Trust me. They are good. I'm a chip connoisseur.
One of the popular pubs in Richmond. Always crowded. Very nice vibe and atmosphere. Plenty of seating including upstairs but can be hard to find space over the weekend. Didn’t try the food.
Pub food done really well! Came into the Union for lunch prior to the footy and once again I was impressed.. clearly they use quality ingredients which makes it a cut above most pubs.. The service is friendly, beer range solid and there's footy on the TV for junkies like me.. highly recommend!
My friends and family are always wanting to come back to union house on Wednesday Steak Night since I’ve introduced them to it . They even travel travel from the other side of town! Food is great (but the chips are next level) and the atmosphere is spot on. Staff are always friendly and chilled. Great Pub!
I enjoyed the chicken schnitzel which was crispy but juicy inside. It came with a slaw which was great too. Only thing missing was the chips. Oh and great beer on tap here!
Consistently great all round. Delicious food, weekly specials, exciting menu, friendly and attentive staff, great service even when the pub is heaving on a Friday and Saturday night. Always a good vibe whether you’re in the public bar, dining room or rooftop.
