A dual birthday for friends just this Sunday gone.
Fantastic food and beverages, the table tennis is to die for, and the staff, led by the fantastic LuLu on the day, awesome.
I'll Be Back
Rani and the legendary crew hosted our wedding and it was everything we could have ever hoped for! The food was delicious, drinks were sensational, the venue looked amazing and the service was top notch!
We are forever grateful!!! Xxx
Love this place! Great food, great drinks list, lovely staff and brilliant lunch deals and events!!
Recently visited the National Hotel for a friends birthday drinks and loved it. Great food, good beers on tap, friendly staff and a chilled vibe!
Needs a Parma on the menu and the place would be complete.
Just had a fantastic family function, perfect weather, perfect food and fabulous staff that made our day a memorable one. Every family member raved about the food. I didn't realise the Nash was so child friendly. We will be back soon for one of our Friday night dinners. :-)
Out to meet O/S friends and the National delivered big time; excellent food, friendly prompt service and good drinks mean a great night out even on a Wednesday! Check out the table tennis table!
Amazing food friendly staff the outdoor deck space is great!!
Stylish and friendly i found the atmosphere was happy and very mixed crowd . Ill be back
A massive thank you to Abbie, Rochelle and the team for ensuring all went well for my Son Shamus 30th birthday held on the 11th. Your professionalism, promptness and efficiency made the task of organising this from W.A smooth and effortless.
Everyone totally LOVED the food it was amazing and it was more than enough for them all.
Loved the set up of the glasses and wine buckets and everyone loved the venue.
Shamus and Louise tell me that the evening was a GREAT success and we would like to thank the team for making it such a wonderful day.
The National Hotel has been on my list for awhile and when I finally visited I wasn’t disappointed.
My friend and I got the dumpling sampler to share - the roasted sweet potato dumplings were our favourite!
For my main I got the roast pumpkin dahl with coconut rice. It was really good and filling and great value for money.
Service was good and the venue had a great feel to it. I would definitely return and would love to try more items off the menu.
Great ideas with bottomless brunch provided by the place. Food was good and the drink won't end for 3 hours. Such a big value for the price we paid.
One of my favourite Melbourne pubs! Yum waghu burgers, great variety of drinks both on tap and by the bottle. A go to place for catch ups and even first dates! Awesome decor too!
Their bottomless brunch is the best thing ever. For $50 you get bottomless mimosas, sparkling, cocktail or bloody Mary for 3 hours. You also get a dish each from the menu which were delightful and not as small as I thought they would be plus they bring out some edamame and roti bread to share. The staff were great and were constantly topping our group up so you most definitely won't feel when you've left that you have been skimmed. It made for a fantastic Sunday with friends.
I was Lucky enough to get a ticket to the matching 'Wine and Spice' night in their cosy new function room. Tom the wine guy from Bibendum Wine was fun and interesting, the food was amazing.. all 6 courses and I'm still waiting on a few of the recipes from the Chef ;) Definitely recommend PS. Function room was really cool, great for stand up or sit down, winter or summer. Cool mood lighting even!!
Randomly stopped here for dinner tnt - one of the places that You keep wanting to visit but never do!
The food was bloody yummy! We will definitely be back!!
First time in, I had the Wagyu burger special and my friend had the fried chicken burger both for $16. Big portion and tasty. Nice venue as well, will come back for sure.
Dropped in for a quick bevie with my partner and Tim.E, I've been here a number of times in the past. I really like the interior here and there is a great beer garden out the back with a lot of seating. Service was good and I'd happily come back when in the area.
Dropped in here yesterday w Simmyeats.Melb and her partner. This pub has a good outdoor area, its BIG.
The service was good, and my beer cold hahaha ... happy Sunday 😊 🍺
Not a bad place to drop in for a beer at this end of Victoria St.

Asian style pub food that’s surprisingly pretty tasty. There’s a fairly extensive menu on offer with the pork belly bao and dumplings being my favourites. Their burgers also look very good. Their outdoor space is full of atmosphere (decked out with little lights and plants) and particularly pleasant on a warm night. The staff also let me sample a couple of beers before deciding on one, and are very accommodating for groups.
The National Hotel is a gastropub in Richmond that combines the usual modern pub offering with some Asian influences, fitting with the Vietnamese influences on the street in which it is located.
Extensive Asian menu, great beer garden and quality "Normal" beers on tap. I got a range of starters, and all were great. pork belly Bao were the highlight. Codalicious had the Malaysian chicken curry which was large and tasty. Worth a visit. Much more on the menu I have to try.
Long Sunday lunch. Good fun, great food. Just a bit slow coming out, but worth the wait. Nice wine list.
Only their second Sunday yum cha apparently but all augers well. Will be back
Food was terrific, and unique with an Asian twist. I had a lamb rump with kimchi, bok choi and crispy sweet potato. The lamb could have been more pink in the middle, but still very moist and full of flavour. The duck fat chips were also a winner.
I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to check this place out. It's a cavernous space with friendly staff and great casual dinner options. My burger was delicious. Looking forward to coming back to try more.
Pleasantly surprised by The National Hotel! Had some drinks here with friends. Altho sweltering inside, the courtyard out the back offered a cute and sizable space. The menu available was impressive. Had the mac and cheese burger with chips! Have had nothing like it before...and would rate highly based on both taste and presentation!
Cool, industrial style pub with a great courtyard area for summer. Had dinner at The National last night and really enjoyed their Asian inspired menu. We shared the duck dumplings for entree and then I went for the mirror Dory with Chinese broccoli , chilli and black bean sauce. The dumplings were nice but nothing spectacular. The fish, on the other hand, was brilliant. Generous portion size, perfectly cooked and the black bean sauce was fantastic. Great venue for a tasty casual meal and a few drinks.

Came here for a quick drink as we waited for a seat at a restaurant nearby. Really enjoyed the ambience and vibe of this place. Will check it out more next time. Has a really cool outdoor setting and my partner and I sat inside opposite the bar at the two seater fixed bench stools. Friendly bar staff. Would not have expected such a great atmosphere from the outside...
This is a cool place. Given its location up the quieter end of Victoria Street, its not often this place is packed and consequently is quite relaxing to attend. The inside is spacious and there's a large outdoor section which will be an obvious hit with diners/drinkers throughout the summer. The cocktail menu is extensive and they have a large range of beers/spirits available. Their food, whilst quite expensive, is quality. We had the burgers on this occasion and they were fantastic. Unfortunately, the let down for this venue is often what's easiest to get right, the staff! In particular, there was a female employee who was quite rude. Whilst other staff were friendly and happy enough to help, this staff member acted like customers were a major inconvenience for her (whilst they might be, unfortunately its your job!). Apart from this, I'd happily recommend this venue to others in the area.
Shared the lamb shoulder and the ribs with buns.
Wowwweeeeee. Unreal. Get down there and stuff your bellies. If I could I would eat this daily. Succulent, tasty, great portion sizes, and the drinks were delightful.
The combination of a warm fireplace, good company. Food, drinks made the evening one to remember
No 5 rating due to the ghetto toilets out back, and the fact we had to wait a little for the food!
Located on a quieter section of Victoria St, The National stands alone marked by its red doors and grey exterior. On entry to The National, one notes the minimalist interior which is enhanced by the concrete floors and wood panelling. Towards the back of the National is a beer garden which is fairly spacious and looks great due to the cool overhanging lights.
Delicious food served in a buzzy atmosphere. Particularly liked the hoisin sticky rack of pork ribs, creamy slaw and steamed bao buns. Shared this with three people with some starters and it was plenty.
Great atmosphere and lovely food and desserts.
A great place to hang out with a group of friends and have some dinner and some drinks.
Only thing is that it gets a tad loud and you have to scream to each other.
Absolute favourite pub in Richmond. The staff are always on the ball and the food will never let you down, definitely have to try the slow cooked lamb shoulder, sticky pork ribs with bao buns and all of the burgers. Extensive drinks list means that there is always something I'm in the mood for!
The National is a rockstar! We were lucky enough to attend a very special bloggers dinner recently and we couldn’t wait to get back and take our friends too! It’s a bit in no mans land on Victoria Street after the many Vietnamese spots there is the good old National Hotel. Offering friendly service, cool fit out, massive beer garden and some of the best pub grub in town.
Honestly the best Southern Fried Chicken Burger I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying! The chips are beautiful & crispy & perfectly accompanied by a fresh (non-greasy) aioli.
The staff have always been friendly & the pub itself has a wonderful winter-y vibe that never lets you down.HIGHLY recommend this one & quite often bring my family & friends down to try the amazing SFCB who all agree it is the best.
Also, if you happen to pop by when they have the soft-shell crab bao bun you won't regret grabbing that for entree - trust me!
Pork rib share plate is amazing!!'
And the passionfruit brûlée was seriously delish! Awesome little find.
The food is great. It would really be a shame to bypass the Hotel’s extensive Pan-Asian offering, which focuses on a range of modern share plates. Smaller share plates on offer include a refined and wondrously aromatic take on steamed dumplings, with fillings like three mushroom and water chestnut, and duck and lemongrass on offer. Reminiscent of a cross between the potstickers we would make with Mom when we were growing up and gyoza, these went down a treat, although I must say that quite a few of us lost our dumpling wrappers in the steamer basket as we attempted to pry them out!

The National in Victoria St Richmond is a stunning pub with a killer courtyard and fit out, and is excelling with its pan Asian menu. Designed by Jerry Mai, the menu features compelling Asian dishes such as the Sticky pork ribs and slaw, and Slow cooked lamb, as well as burgers. The World Loves Melbourne was invited along to experience The National and see what people are talking about.
This is a savvy modern pub, in line with the precinct of Victoria St with its standout Asian options. The World Loves Melbourne sometimes gets bored with pub menus as being safe and predictable, but here at The National they blow up beige with exciting menu options. We found a park nearby with the pub not far from Victoria Gardens and easily accessible.
Seriously great calamari .. Fresh ! Homemade dumplings ,beef curry , great mojitos
Casual but great environment for dinner inside and beer garden outside . Hip but cool . Thsnks Mardi liv and ben
We are locals and value for money and fun .. Well be back
A standout venue.. Went here a while ago for a friends birthday and loved the fit out and beer garden.
Re-visited yesterday with the family for lunch and sat in one of the booths inside. The staff were attentive and helpful with our questions about the menu.
We enjoyed a few small dishes to start. The duck and lemongrass dumplings were a stand out.
Shared the much raved about lamb shoulder and we were not disappointed. My chilli loving friend had the bang bang chicken and it sure lived up to its name. Spicy!
We enjoyed a nice Shiraz that was recommended to us by the bartender.
Highly recommended.
Fantastic dinner here tonight. The calamari and the wague burger an absolute hit with our group. Very friendly and tentative staff. Keep up the awesome work guys; we can't wait to return!
Slow Cooked Lamb Sharing Plate. It's amazing... Best dish I've ever had!!
Ok we went here last month and the main was great but OMG you need to try the salted caramel ice cream I've been craving it ever since! Honeycomb and all! Will be back !
Good beer garden & quality eats. Perfect for a lazy catch up on a summers night. The beer garden is breezy & you can hide under cover. The menu Asian inspired with a few pub musts (eg. steak & Mash ). All meals & share plates were winners & the prices are very reasonable . I'd suggest there are other gathering holes in Richmond that should consider what the National is offering (value & quality) & take it on board.
A bar/pub with Asian delights on the menu. The barramundi and green curry was absolutely delicious. Well presented and the look of the place was nice. It looks ominous on the outside but bigger on the inside.
Good pub. Food very good place very well presented.
Very helpful girl served us, recommended the lamb shoulder sharing plate and made sure our table ordered just the right amount of food and helped me pick a wine I liked. The food was really delicious. I will definitely be recommending The National to friends... Love the reggae too!
Best burger!. I had the burger here tonight and I gotta say it's right up there with the best in town, I haven't tried any of the other dishes but if they are as good as their burger I will be back.
This place has become somewhat of a local for my friends and I in recent times. Have only eaten there once and I have to say I found the Asian steak dish ok but so so over salty (I think it was the sauce). Got hard to eat after awhile. My partner had the same and felt the same about it. However I was at a table of over 10 people and everyone really liked and enjoyed their food (no one else got the same as us though) so perhaps it was just our dish/our tastes. I will eat there again regardless. Good wine selection, some good mid range bottles. I did however notice that their cheapest red (Morgans Bay) is way way way overpriced at 40-something dollars. This is not a decent wine at all and I say that with a lot of experience in hospitality and having purchased this at cost myself. It really is a rip off. It shouldn't cost more than 30-35 and even that's pushing it...
Cool place.. I had the smoked eggplant, silken tofu and rice noodles hot pot. It was excellent and i really enjoyed it. I really regret not leaving a tip.
I love the dim lighting at this place too, it creates a very chill atmosphere.
Pub food with an Asian theme, won't rock your world but you will walk out satisfied in terms of both quality (for a pub meal) and meal size
Massive servings of delicious food.
Incredibly good looking staff. Not to mention the best service in Melbourne. Win!
Lovely place. One of the best beef burgers i've ever had. don't know what the guy below is on about! maybe it was all the booze he had afterwards,
Love the make-over. For vibe, staff and food, it's one of my favourites pubs. The poached ginger chicken rocks my world, but I personally would recommend avoiding the sezchuan lamb - that dish just don't taste right!
Really enjoyed drinks in the beer garden out the back, had amazing Thai fish cakes, but loved the sassy waiter with glasses! She was a delight.
Great restyling of the old Nash. Delicious food and good service. Went with a large group and had a great time. Beer garden was packed and place had a good vibe to it. Sichuan lamb was awesome, as was the ginger chicken.
It's amazing what they have done with the National - it looks fantastic! So different to the old Nash! I went with 3 friends and we got 5 small plates and 2 mains to share which was plenty - only cost $25 each. Not sure if the menu has changed since some of the earlier reviews but we didn't find it expensive at all. Can't wait to enjoy the beer garden when the weather improves!
'Weird food'?? It is different to standard pub fair but that's what I loved about it! Everything was delicious and the staff were so friendly. The only thing I don't like about this place is the dim concrete design... A little creepy and gives off a really intimidating vibe. Went there for some drinks with friends and it seemed as if it were reserved only for upper class booze hounds or professionals grabbing a bite to eat by themselves after work. The ambience is a little off-putting but watching the businessmen eat their dinner up on the tiny high chairs is actually hilarious.
Really enjoyed the roti and Dahl. It is an entrée but probably the size of a small main. My husband was rather happy with the burger. Can't wait to come back
Great refurbishment (maybe cut back on the exposed concrete a little) and the National is good again. Good staff and relaxed vibe make it well worth going to.
Quirky and SO Richmond!. I adore this suburb, it does so well in the culinary and entertainment scene. This place is an absolute gem and deserves more hype. The food had been consistently filling and drink specials great. Loving the quirky decor and court yard.
Down-town New Yorker... Overall, fantastic little spot. Away from the crazy hub of Victoria Street, The National has that down-town New York bar feel, very in at the moment and very cosy. Glass jars with native australian bush flowers in them, old beer bottles turned tea light holders, make it all a bit wow. Very much appreciated.
My friends and I tend to make it a place to meet after work on a Friday now here and there, the only downfall is the variety on the menu - reason I liked it originally is that it swayed away from the asian side of food, yet when I went recently, they had made the entire menu an asian inspired one! No brainer, given the location, but it was nice to see them do something different beforehand with the whole modern Australian pub-style take on food. Everything is great, can't fault the place. Great variety of wines. Trying to coax my boss into having the Christmas party there! Definitely a great place to catch up with friends for a few tapas, an after work meal and/or drinks.
A great feed!. I recently had a nice meal here. My partner had a wagyu beef burgar which was really nice. I had the sirloin steak - best steak I have eaten out in a long time. Great beers on tap to go with your meal. Very good service. I will be going back here!
Needs more work. I have been here for some of the most fabulous breakfasts. The main meals are good but they are pretty expensive for a very competitive Richmond pub market. The dumplings are really good but expensive for 3 tiny dumplings. In my opinion the meals need to be less complicated, bigger serves for most and cheaper if they are going to last in an area that has some really good pubs and restaurants. I will definitely go back and I hope the menu tones down a bit.
Beetroot Salad. Beetroot salad @The National
Renovations are almost complete and give The National a truly contempory feel. I love the concrete bar and tables. Bar staff very disaffected and not interested in really anything. It was like an imposition that I enquired about items on the menu. The menu is exceedingly expensive considering it's very Asian inspired and is on the street of streets for great Asian food at reasonable prices. I guess the renovations need to be paid for somehow. That aside, we ordered the steak sirloin ($27). It was cooked to perfection. Faultless. The lack of Eftpos - credit card only is a let down.....come on its 2012 everyone uses it and it's safer than cash. Huge beautiful courtyard which is to be seen. Although expensive.... I'll try this place again, afterall it's the food at the end of day that will have people returning.
The National Hotel. The Nash has changed hands and has taken its name back to the traditional National Hotel. With renovations out of the way the pub is up and running with a new team and brilliant new kitchen. The chef is drawing on his Greek heritage to offer some fresh and exciting food. From a large selection on the mezze menu to a well put together main menu with vegetarian and vegan options, through to the desserts of homemade icecream, there will be something to suit everyone. Everything, including the hand cut chips, is made on sight with love. Come down and check out the beergaden and enjoy a feast that will delight.
The menu is an mix of usual pub classics with a few extra round the world twists, something for everyone! A good list of nibbly, share plates we all agree there has to be some school prawns in our future!
Delish! I wouldn't have stepped in the old National… but the new one.. I didn't want to leave!! There were some odd comments on Urbanspoon about bad experiences and lack of 'pub grub' but we are all excited to head down Vic Ave on this gorgeous day for a spot of Asian inspired fare! Firstly congrats on the fit out, it is stunning! The finer details are still being finished but it is looking good! Industrial chic? Plenty of concrete, and metal fill the inside and then you wonder through to a bamboo lined outdoor area that is brilliant! Big tables for everyone to crash for a lazy afternoon of pints and dumplings!! The menu isn't packed with parmas and burgers, I am not sure why anyone would assume that is has to be! Instead there are plenty of small dishes to nibble on, dumplings, gorgeous salads and bigger plates of curry, barramundi and the desserts OMG!! Plenty of great dishes to share and off we go!! Dumplings sound too good not to! Ocean Trout with Prawn and for the meat lovers Wa

I had my 21st birthday at the National Hotel and the service was absolutely incredible! The staff were so attentive to even the smallest of things. Whilst speeches were happening, they controlled the music and made sure there were no awkward silences. They ensured that they didn’t disturb the flow of the event when serving food and were extremely professional and quiet as they served. I ordered the 3 course menu & the food was amazing and all my guests really enjoyed the food! Someone was quickly accessible whenever we needed something and was always very polite and kind. Sasha was amazing with coordinating with me prior to the event, she set up the table arrangement etc perfectly and made the entire event so hassle-free for us! I was so happy with how well the venue and the staff took care of the event. The venue (garden parlour) size was perfect for our medium-sized group! Would definitely recommend this venue!!
The event it’s self was fantastic! The space was perfect for the amount of people I had and the coordinator was lovely and communicated really well before and throughout the event.
I purchased the Premium Grazing table and although the products themselves were delicious 😍 the presentation of the food was underwhelming, with each product on seperate little plates. I just wish it looked more impressive for how much it costs. Otherwise the event was awesome 🤩 10/10 would recommend holding events here 🥳💃🏼🎉
Hosted a birthday event at the National for around 50 guests and the service was impeccable. Sasha and her team were a delight to deal with and they set up the event space beautifully and made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the night. Thank you for a great event!
I like the atmosphere here. Dimmer lighting so you can relax, good music, beautiful decor/fit out and there is a fireplace. Their chicken burger is AMAZING!
Good vibe, love the courtyard area and the outdoor heaters are really effective so you don't feel the cold too much. Consistently great food and drinks, the specialty cocktails were really good and interesting
Booked a birthday function here and everything was perfect. The staff were extremely helpful and flexible. The venue had an amazing atmosphere and style. And the food and drinks were great and well-priced.
Love mr yum ordering for an easy casual drink. Beer Standard the not quite craft any more but still good beer range (mt goat, balter etc) but amazing Asian fusion style pub fare.
