Review Penny House - Richmond

Great place for a quiet little coffee or light meal! I take a couple of participants from a disability centre there each week, and its great! The owners are VERY understanding and accommodating and welcome us every time. Thank you, and we will keep coming there

Cold brew from Code Black was nice as always. The pulled pork that I had was well cooked. I would love to have some green on the plate even in a tiny portion. It would’ve been even better if the aircon was on inside so that I didn’t have to site outside with lots of traffic going on.

What happened here!? This place used to be buzzing and I could smell the coffee walking to the cafe! I ordered the French toast which has been my go to when I visit this cafe! But wow... I was delivered a plate of hot mess ( as pictured) grilled bananas on bacon, kiwi fruit, strawberry, poached cinnamon pear slice, dried fig and 3 slices of thick cut bread that was drenched in maple. The flavours were so confusing! Coffee was okay. When the server asked how my meal was at the till, I gave some suggestions and she just said ‘ Ah okay’ and looked down. Definitely under new management and I won’t be back.

Good value with decent sized portions, ordered the Eggs Benne which had a decent amount of bacon unlike some other cafes. Enjoyed my meal though Choc Milkshake was a bit basic. Service was a bit slow despite not being overly busy. Staff also seen eating at the customers table, I had no issue with this but my flatmate feels it should be noted and a bit unprofessional.

It was my first time visit to this cafe and I had a coffee. Great coffee I must say. Most of all great Customer service . My client forgot his purse. They were waiting for us till then and kept our stuff safe. When I came for a coffee next day they handed over me our stuffs. What an amazing staff. ❤👏They were looking for us every day . Thanks would be visiting soon ! #supportsmallbusiness

Just got there before they closed, and they made me 2 coffees and a chicken schnitzel roll! Great service, great people behind the counter. Happy to chat while getting your order ready! Happy, friendly atmosphere. Will reccomend to anyone to try Penny House!!!!! Very sattisfying!

Called into this cafe for a take away coffee. The service was friendly and quick. My strong skinny latte was good, there was some milk froth but the flavour of the coffee was pretty average.

Original review September 2017
Dropped in for a coffee this morning. The service was the best I’ve had in a very very long time.

I no sooner ordered my coffee and the barista brought me my t/a. Cool hahaha

Thank you. My only criticism was that the coffee was sooo feekin hot!

But the coffee flavour was really good and my strong skinny latte was excellent. Oh happy days lol

Clearly changed hands since I last went, we ordered 3 coffees all of which were burnt. Hospitality service was very poor. There were 5 of us and only gave 3 glasses for water. Staff were running when it wasn't busy. Big shame as I rated the coffee as one of the best in Melbourne... taking 5 friends from NZ here was embarrassing I must say.
We had a pretty good brunch here as after a lot of wine the night before all I felt like was standard brunch food... like a roti with some bacon and egg - they nailed this!

The scrambled egg, chill and bacon wraps were also great. Lots of flavour and we loved the spice from the chilli.

The only let down was the bacon... so fatty and not cooked enough to render the fat down. If that was done properly it would have been a 5 star review!

Pretty poor experience this time around, the Service was pretty average and the glasses were filthy ... the cheese burgers are tasty and the buns taste great

Best coffee and food down burnley street, with lovely staff with a smile to match ❤️🙌🏻 will definitely be back here again! Lovely outdoor area as well for those sunny relaxed days 👌🏻☀️

Place was nicely set up.
Food was great. We had the steak and spaghetti.
Staff was friendly.
Will definitely go again to try the other menu items.

I was so impressed with the large servings. At penny house, you really get all your money's worth. I'm always annoyed at cafes that charge 20$ for a small plate of food. I had the pastrami eggs Benedict, and the caramelised onions were to die for. The hot chocolate was great too. Staff were extremely friendly, and was just a chill place to have breaky.

Fantastic breakfast joint in Richmond. Have tried the big breakfast which is delicious with perfectly poached eggs and excellent bacon. Coffee is fantastic. Open kitchen which inspires confidence in the cooking. Will definitely be back many more times.

Coffee is the best in Richmond. Food is fresh, flavour packed and delicious! Service is second to none, the people there are so friendly and welcoming. 10/10 would recommend!!
Sam
Epic benedict choices. Their deluxe smashed avo is hands down my favourite. Very friendly cafe, good coffee, and they always have every paper available.

Went on Australia day as alot of other places where suprised, was for a cafe not in a highly popular area this cafe was surprising a great experience, do recommend will go again!

Our local favourite. Consistently great coffee. Food is delicious, good variety from brekkie to lunch. The team always provide friendly service, great vibe.

We are locals and go there some weekends for breakfast but not again. We walked in yesterday but waiter did not look at us. We sat at table for 15 mins waiting to be served & nothing. Couple sat down next to us & got served straight away. Did he not notice we did not have a menu or cutlery. Bad service, not something we are used to in our own suburb.

Modern funky looking venue with some tables out front. Be warned its squishy if you've got long legs and its also set up for smokers. Had I realised there were smokers I wouldnt have opted to sit outside and enjoy the winter sun. Sorry but get rid of the smokers, especially as you don' have that much seating inside you potentially will loose customers.

Anyway as I said its a modern styled place with a dark wood interior and a semi open kitchen. It was quite warn inside so it might get stuffy in summer.

While Im waiting to order there's a steady queue of customers getting coffee and lunches and the food looks good. The salads look really appetising. I opt for lighter lunch and thats great because they offer breakfast all day. so its Salmon Rosti and a large flat white. I dont have to wait long for my coffee which is nice and hot. Just the way I like it. Maybe it was a little weak and I'm not sure its an automatic double shot for a large like my other coffee place, but its still a nice tasting coffee..

My meal came out after about 5 min and it too was piping hot. 2 rosti with wilted spinach, smoked salmon and 2 poached eggs with hollandaise. The rosti were crunchy moist and had great texture. You got a lovely potato taste even with a mouthful of everything. The smoked salmon had been warmed slightly (I hate when its cold in a hot dish) and there was plenty of it. The spinach was just wilted and slightly seasoned. The eggs were slightly over for my liking but still runny. The Hollandaise was a surprise, as it was a lighter version that wasnt overpowering. It was really about melding all the flavours together,.

The size of the meal is probably perfect for brunch or light lunch. If your really hungry you'll want something more substantial or maybe add an extra rosti or something.

Overall a very pleasant lunch and I'd recommend going their for breakky or brunch.

It needed to be extra special ....
just like the happy & mighty team HFC, not to be mistaken with KFC.

When you are in Richmond you need to be a real "damn" good" cafe to stand out
.

Not a huge place and it was packed inside out, a great welcoming sign.

Great service, coffee is above average and food also shows a bit of flair, but again it needed to be extra special.

To the owner Barista .... GO HAWKS! FOURTHORN, wish you all the best.

Edit after 1.5 years: They have picked up their game SO MUCH in terms of food and service. Up to 4 stars from 2.5. The brekkie wrap with bacon and egg has to be one of the best hangover foods ever!

We live around the corner from this place and really trying to make it our local but it's not happening. Inside seating is dark and stuffy so we've been sitting outside during warmer months. That is if we can avoid that table in front of the window that gets the greasy hot air from the kitchen vent. They close at 3PM on weekends, which is unfortunate as most places around here shut the kitchen at 3 but stay open till 4 for coffees. It takes ages to get an average $3.70 take away long black in the mornings. Service is also quite slow, many times we had to walk in and get a menu ourselves as nobody brings one. Decent food but for my daily coffee i walk past this place.

Food was tasty, but the service was a little slow. They also brought me the wrong juice. Corn fritters were tasty and the tiny tobasco bottle was a nice touch. Eggs Benedict was solid, but came with bacon instead of ham. The option to have them on potato rosti instead of toast was an awesome change up. Codalicious

Our favourite local. Best eggs benny in town, have it with rosti instead of bread for a lush breakfast. Good coffee and juice. Lovely staff, great service and nice place to unwind, relax and read the paper on a slow weekend morning.

Coffee is always excellent. Skilled barista's who ensure a very high standard. Menu is varied and consistently delicious!
My personal favourite is the french toast and bacon.
Brock P
Good local breakfast. French toast is a house speciality along with the bacon and egg roti. Kitchen could try and bit quieter when they wash the dishes though.
Cruffin Lover
Amazing and quick coffees! Delicious variety of food ready for takeaway whilst on the run. Healthy salads like quinoa as well as vegetarian options is a bonus. All finished off with a balanced diet of a strawberry cruffin :) Cheers guys!

First time at this cafe on the weekend. It was quite stuffy/hot inside, but then the outside had people smoking which was a real turn-off. The coffee was great, I had to order quickly so didn't get to peruse the entire menu, but they didn't seem to have many vegetarian options at first glance? The staff seemed a little distracted at times, but on the whole the service was good but not brilliant. I'll come back again for a second try, then review again.

Very impressed with this cafe! We arrived at 2:45pm and they were only 15 minutes away from closing, but they were still willing to seat us and let us have our brunch without hurrying us at all. We felt guilty for going in so late so we ate our food as quickly as possible. The big breakfast was ENORMOUS - the scrambled eggs were piled up high on the toast, it was the biggest serving of scrambled eggs out of all the brunches we have had in Melbourne thus far. Maybe they wanted to use up their eggs for the day as we were the last customers? Just kidding. We also really enjoyed our drinks - among the best coffees and hot chocolates we have had. Smashed avocado is also worth trying, but don't order it if you don't like red onions. I personally like it a lot. A fabulous quick feed today and thanks so much for accommodating us last minute. It's not far from the Yarra boulevard and we took a walk there afterwards as the weather today is amazing, I suggest doing this after the meal to walk/jog off the carbs!

Smashed avo is delicious, add the chutney, it's awesome! The coffee is great and takeaways are quick if you're in a hurry.
Staff are hit and miss, some are lovely, others don't give you much.

We had been looking forward to going to Penny House for breakfast for ages and finally did it today. We were very pleased. The food was very good, well cooked, plentiful and good ingredients. The staff were nice and the open kitchen seemed to be staffed by happy chefs! It was busy also, when we arrived we got a table straight away however at times it looked like there was a small queue. The price was reasonable, especially given the generous serves. We didn't feel rushed either. I had the big breakfast which was very good, I would get it again.
Ilovefood
This cafe used to be a favourite go-to, however in recent months the quality of the service, produce and serving sizes has diminished dramatically! The smashed avocado serve has halved, with the avocado brown and watery - feta substituted with chopped onion :( It is difficult to get staff to serve you, and when they do, they have the worst attitude! Why does this always happen once a place becomes popular? Come on guys, pick up your game!

Delucious breakfast!!! Had the Mexican fritters and French Toast with banana and maple syrup. Funky little cafe out of the way. Get there people 😊

Generous. Being less than 250m from my front door, Penny House had a big advantage to start with. Fortunately location isn't its only strength - consistently good for breakfast and lunch, and always generous in their servings. My sons favourite is the French Toast with bacon and bannana that is almost as big as he is.

The Penny House Café is one of the emerging café’s that are popping up all over Richmond, Australia. As one of Melbourne’s inner suburbs, Richmond is becoming host to a lot of respectable cafes and restaurants. It’s a good time to live in the area. My wife and I decided to head down to the Penny House for lunch. They had an a la carte menu in addition to a soup du jour and a sandwich display at the front. The food was typical of a café and they did in house espresso on site. I immediately went for the chorizo and halloumi sandwich because I am a sucker for both of these ingredients. I love any form of cured meat or sausage, and a cheese that is salty and firm enough to grill, I mean come on, who wouldn’t go for something like that. Salty satisfying goodness. The sandwich was heated up for and served within a respectable amount of time. It was enjoyable and hit the spot. It wasn’t something that blew me away, but it did the job. I enjoyed. Not a bad café, prices were fair, foo

Always consistently good. Have been coming to Penny's for a few months due to a work contract. Have tried pretty much everything on the menu and it is always consistently good. Our favourites are the amazing poached eggs and rosti and best chicken parma ever...love the homemade chips. The bought in almond croissants and the homemade Portuguese tarts are amazing! Staff are always great to deal with and coffees are consistently good - I'm a bit of a mocha fan and Penny's do a fab version!

The best chai. I go out of my way to get chai from this place - calmer sutra with bonsoy is the ultimate delight.

Beautiful venue, lovely staff and amazing food. Breakfast all day.
Great place

Neighbor. The coffee is alright but depends a lot of which barista is on. But its way to expensive for what it is (regular for 4.70).
And for the other comments about the lovely staff : what ? When ? Who ? Except the owner's wife, it could be a 7/11 coffee machine, I can't see any difference...

Steve the chef turns out some gorgeous breakfast!! Great quality, quick and tasty! I'll be back!!

Simply delicious. My husband and I had breakfast at Penny House this morning. We were driving past and it looked great. The staff were welcoming. The cafe is immaculate. The food was simple but perfectly cooked and delicious. I had the smashed avocado and it was tasty and fresh. Th poached eggs melt in your mouth. It is an open plan cafe with the kitchen visible which I really like and it also means you can thank those who have prepared your food.

Great Chai too!

Great experience all round.
Greg
Food and coffee loving owner. You have got to love people who are passionate about what they do. We drove past this place, it looked cute so we decided to pop in for brunch. It was a delightful surprise. Great coffee. The machiato was a beauty with the classic 3 layers. The machiato is about on par with The Maling Room in Canterbury, which is a big compliment. However, the food out performs Maling Room. The owner really cares about what he does and is justifiably proud. The ambiance is certainly understated and earthy as is the thing trendy places tend to do these days. They let the coffee and food do the talking. For us, this place is a keeper and we will certainly return.

Best scrambled eggs and coffee in Melbourne. All staff are friendly and welcoming.

A great little spot in Richmond. Going out for breakkie somewhere in Richmond where the staff aren't pretentious & actually give a damn is getting trickier by the day, thankfully Penny Hse fills the gap.

Had a yummy breakfast there this morning - the fruit salad was fresh, and croissant was lovely, think it might be from Noisette bakery which is always delish. Hubby had the lamb burger - tasty and served on a brioche bun which I like.

Cute vibe, solid food & standard prices make this one to visit.

Great!!. This place has great coffee (BONUS: they start doing take-aways at 6am!), you always get the same great service! Lovely staff! Breakfast was awesome, can't wait to go back at lunch time for the mini burgers!! Personal Favourite for sure!

Could be better. Came for breakfast. Food nice but ridiculously stylized. Coffee good. This place is irritatingly grotty. The floor needs a good sweep, the pepper grinder covered in an unidentified stickiness and the table seems to have not been wiped in a while.... A forgiving speckled concrete top hiding previous diners mess. Food arrived a little quickly, not allowing for a leisurely breakfast with newspaper. Probably best for a takeaway coffee or to sit outside on a nice day.

Great Coffee. Killer Chai Latte - Service is always friendly and prompt - Have not had the pleasure to eat here, have only ever had coffee however the food all looks really yum.

Good addition to the area. Have visited quite a few times since it opened. The coffee is good, nice and strong.
I have tried some of the food items but wasn't too impressed.
The staff could crack a smile now and again and use a please and thank you.

Really good! Defiantly worth a visit I will be back! The mini burgers were great and my partner had the scrambled eggs which were really good! Great juice, good service! Tick!

Great big breakfast and the coffee is awesome. Been here about 6 times now and have never been let down by service or quality of food. Excellent little adventure. Any day of the week!
Laura
Just great!. Come here all the time and I have never been disappointed. Smashed avo on toast is always a winner. Can also recommend the french toast with bacon and maple syrup. Sometimes difficult to get a table as it's quite a small place, but staff will always try their best to get you a seat asap.

Love the food & coffee. 1 of the nicest brunch i've tried, bought a voucher, ordered big breakfast, food was really nice & good quality (low fat bacon, free range eggs, etc), excellent soy latte too...good customer service. we'll be back

Ho Hum. Decided to try this place for a coffee and a quick breakfast after walking past.
I was waiting for a couple of friends and got asked at least 5 times if I wanted to order anything, which was annoying as the waiters are obviously not communicating to each other. I ordered the Smashed Avocado, if you are going to do smashed avocado, please have ripe avocado's or just say you have ran out. The avocado was hard and had that unripe taste to it, so was disappointing. The coffee was okay. My friend ordered a muffin also which was forgotten about until I went and asked for it. A lot of other amazing places to go to in Richmond for breakfast. We might come back and try the lunch menu for round 2.

My partner and I came here for the voucher purchased on living social. The experience was great. We both love the coffee! The place looks clean and welcoming. I suppose the only downside for this place is the oily food. The oil from the hashbrown was drenched in oil. Having said that, we love the place and will definitely return for more.
Alex
A great addition to the cafe scene. Down to earth type of café. Great coffee. Friendly and helpful staff. A good selection of food – designed to cover all bases, from light and easy to a bit more substantial. Accompanying this is a cabinet with items from focaccias to several hearty (and always delicious) salads. Have always enjoyed the smashed avocado with roasted tomatoes and vegi stack.
Aleisha
Great cafe!!. I went to Penny House on the weekend for brunch and LOVED it. I heard really good things and wasn't disappointed at all. The atmosphere is great and the service was fantastic. Very friendly and attentive staff. I had the smashed avocado with roasted tomatoes and it was delicious, coffee was great too. Can't wait to go back!

Loving penny house!! Veggie stack with poached egg is awesome!! Great service, food and coffee. All round a fantastic cafe!
Andrew
Have been getting coffee here for the past few weeks and it's been great, service is excellent and friendly, remembered my face quickly for that personal touch. Amazing chicken schnitzel focaccia's too!
Christine
I've been to Penny House for breakfast and lunch over the last couple of weeks and really loved it. They have a great eat in menu for both breakfast and lunch, I especially liked the Eggs Benedict. They also have fantastic tasty and healthy salads to eat in or take away, perfect to take back to the office. There was even enough left over of my serve to take home for dinner. Lovely staff and great coffee too.
Kate
Great breakfast. Bacon and eggs, big breakfast and mixed berry muffin. Good portion size. Really enjoyable. Would recommend

Just went to Penny House in Richmond with my husband for breakfast. He ordered 2 poached eggs on toast. I ordered a foccacia with egg bacon tomato cheese and spinach. When it came out it looked lovely. Then I tasted it. The egg was freezing cold. Not just cool from waiting to be brought out to me but freezing cold out of the fridge. $14.80 for a foccacia is a bit pricey but to pay that for a ready made foccacia which had obviously been in the fridge is a bit much. When i told them the egg was stone cold they took it away and warmed it up. They didnt even offer me a freshly made one. Coffees were nice and big but not nice at all and orange juice was freshly squeezed but warm!!!! Cold eggs and warm juice. Mmmmm. No deal. The oranges obviously hadnt been refrigerated and no ice in the glasses. Do not waste your money.
Josh
I went in for lunch and had the chicken burger with smashed avacado - one of the best I've ever had. Simple, honest, amazing food. Being the same guys from 7 Grams, they also do a damn fine coffee. I'll be making this my new regular
