Review The Barber Cafe - Richmond

Love the coffee. The staff also very nice and helpful when i asked to change bacon/ham to salmon.

This little cafe is cute and the coffee is great. Nice little outdoor area. Small seating area inside bit cramped but warm in the winter. I just wish they had more selection on their menu. Food is typical Melbourne , nice but basic.

The folks here know their coffee really well. A beautiful spot to sit outside, enjoy your coffee, catch up with friends or get some work done. I was there every morning for 4 days in a row on my last visit to Melbourne!

Excellent choices and delicious food. Window to order drinks and food through. Alternatively sit inside or order take away in there. Don’t forget the great and some unique food in the display as well as more familiar. The staff that I assume are family always up for an interesting chat. Plus they remember you. I also like it’s traditional Melbourne Victoria Australian inside.
David Hill
A nice little spot with indoor and outdoor seating, relaxed, and a reasonably priced menu. Plenty of regulars coming in and chatting with the owners for a nice local coffee spot vibe.
Elizabeth Leach
Sorry the staff were very friendly but the coffee was so bitter and burnt I couldn’t drink it. The Banana bread was also stale, dry and bland.

Great cafe - love the food and the service!

Lovely all day breakfast. Lovely service too- will be back.

Scrambled eggs on toast with a coffee and my day was set for a good one. Came here on a whim with a friend for a late breakfast (brunch probably). Good coffee, fast service, portion sizes pretty good and at a reasonable price. My chai latte was very nice. So sick of the powdered stuff people serve these days.

Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Pram/stroller accessible. Parking not too bad. Dietaries catered for. Takeaway available.

I had my morning strong skinny latte here today. The service was really friendly and they had some tasty treats.

I’m out for brunch so I couldn’t eat anything today.

Unfortunately this was the hottest coffee I’ve ever had. It was some 15 mins - 20 mins and the coffee was still too bloody hot to drink!

Gosh ... anyway happy Sunday everyone.

I could not get through my day without my coffee from here, daily chat are always fun. Random Saturday morning breakfast with friends and colleagues always goes down a treat. The team are legends couldn't recommend this place enough 👍

I went here with a friend on a weekday this week, just a short stop off for a coffee. We were greeted by a staff member straight away and told them we were just after a coffee, no food. She asked if we were having IN or takeaway, we said IN. We sat down and I ordered a coffee and my friend ordered a juice. The coffee was placed on the table in a takeaway cup and the juice was snuck in about 10min later and just placed on the table with a straw, wasn't announced - we didn't realize it was there for a while. No glass, just a sealed bottle from the fridge put on the table. If I'm having a coffee in the cafe at a table, I'd expect it in a proper cup and the juice should have at least come with a glass. Bit disappointing and not as good service as it has been in the past with previous owners.

I use the cafe for small meetings, 2 or 3 times a week. The staff are great about the meetings, they will shift tables around if needed, they don't interrupt and importantly, don't make us feel that we have sat there to long. The coffee has to be one of the best in Melbourne; not unusual for me to see customers buying a bag of the cafe's coffee blend.
Stuck In Transit
I rarely get the chance to visit Richmond for brekky, however I did have an appointment in the area and thought I would try and find something quick for a coffee and something to eat. I didn’t have to walk far before walking up to the Old Barber Shop Cafe. . ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE. This small cafe offers a hand full of tables inside and additional seating on their front alfresco area. Being a beautiful day, I decided to enjoy what few sunny summer days we’ve had so far. The fit out stays true to the Victorian style house the cafe has taken over.

Found this lil cafe (little but cute) on church street, just off bridge road. Love the look of the cafe, w few tables inside and outside. I can only rate the banana smoothie (legendary) i got which unfortunately was a bit let down considering i paid $7 for it. The texture was more like a milkshake - taste of milk, ice and cinnamon on top. And i had to wait 15min for it :( might try it again and see...

Whist the coffee is good they seem disorganised and we ate before coffees arrived then only one coffee. Had to go up and ask for our other coffee. Shame as I'd like to have enjoyed the spot as its a local.
Travelling Palate
Very pleasant breakfast. We enjoyed the egg and bacon butty, the ham, cheese and tomato toastie and the coconut porridge- all very yummy! Service is pleasant enough and accommodating.

Went here on a Saturday morning. Wasn't busy at all but the food took a very long time to come out, especially considering that we both ordered nutrition bowls which only required an egg to be cooked. Food was bland and had very little flavour but the portion size was very generous

This is a shout-out to everyone about this wonderful little hidden gem. Expertly run by a small loyal team of staff, they never fail to please. Small batch seasonal Genovese coffee always on point. The micro kitchen manages to produce delicious food. Staff always positive and generous. Love this place to bits! Great music too!!

What an absolute gem. Hidden away in a little pocket in Church St off the bustling Bridge rd shopping strip. The avo smash with chilli and lime and Brazilian Acai Berries with coconut yoghurt were brilliant. The coffee was bang on. We loved their music playlist too. The staff were so friendly and service was excellent. ❤️ OBS !

Maybe it was because of it was New Years, this place had slow service and very limited menu. Decently priced, not very gluten-free friendly (when all the gf options were not available). Gf bread is the shitty supermarket style, half the size of the normal bread. The avo dish is definitely missing poached eggs (which the cafe doesn't do at all), and either goat's cheese or feta, the cottage cheese is way too mild. Long black was a bit sour but drinkable. Vanilla milksake tasted a bit artificial but was decent enough. Jam crossing was way flatter and smaller than the jam&cheese one, resulting in portion envy.

You could easily miss this little cafe on the Bridge Rd end of Church street, slightly off centre and tucked away in a converted housefront. Enjoyed the vibe and sitting out on the front decking is great on a sunny chilled Sunday morning.
I had the home made granola bowl topped with coconut honey yoghurt and strawberry. It was some of the tastiest granola I've had around the area. Can't vouch for their eggs but do you self a favour and try a side of their fruit toast.
Probably loses some points for not having the best coffee but let's be honest I've been spoilt with great coffee around richmond.
Christine S
The old barber shop cafe on church street, is a cafe I have walked past many times and thought it was time to try it out! It's standard pricing and the wait staff are quite nice.

My partner and I had the granola and fruit toast, they both were satisfying and filling, the fruit toast for me was the best, not too large in size but quite thick!

If you feel like a lazy Sunday coffee and cake and are shopping on bridge road this place is a must visit!

Another great Melbournian Cafe.
Place is very nice and staff were very friendly and attentive.
Coffee was good and everything we ordered was tasty and fresh.
And don't forget to order a beautifully made chocolate babka with the coffee.
Melbournian
I have only had coffee and things out of the cabinet. The muffins and cakes I have had have been nice but the coffee has a strange taste/aftertaste to it. I don't think it is an issue with the way it is made, I think it is the blend. I guess that is just a preference but for me, I don't like it.
Foodaholic
Had brunch there. Lovely spot. Menu is a bit different- good variety- not your usual eggs on toast. Coffee was excellent- service was great. I accidentally spilled my coffee and had to order another 2 but we were only charged for 2 coffees instead of 4 which was a great surprise seeing it was my fault- a nice touch in customer service in a hospitality world which nowadays seem not to cafe about little details like this anymore. We had the baked eggs, lentil and vege soup with sourdough and ham, cheese, tomato croissant. All came out in a timely manner and tasted really good. Will definitely be back and will recommend

Formerly the Barbers of Seville, this converted house has a cosy neighbourhood feel. The service is great so don’t be surprised if the baristas remember your order for next time.

Best breakie ever!!!. These guys do a fantastic breakfast!!! Noisette multigrain with avocado, mushrooms & smoked salmon is the bomb!!!
Woof
Really nice setting and al fresco area but food & coffee average. What place does all day breakfast and doesn't even have a big breakfast on the menu!? They also don't do poached eggs. Wuuuut
Coffee Lover
Seems like a lovely little place but probably won't go back. I asked for a hot latte only to take a sip and it was not even warm. Not really worth waiting ten minutes for when there are so many great cafes in the area.

This is my favourite local cafe! Coffee is consistently amazing. Food and service is also perfect and consistent. Staff are super friendly and recognise your face :) must try the babka!

Overpriced and odd service. I can understand why this place might have its supporters. It has some quaint charm, although one has to be prepared to sit on hard metal boxes - something a little more comfortable might work better. I liked some of the comments below that refer to food being overpriced, and waiter insisting on calling people "mate". Why is this place charging Toorak prices in a place in Richmond that at best can be described as "quaint". I am not paying $17 for an orange juice and granola - which is what I was charged today, so I am not going back there.
The Oracle
A samall cafe run well. Nice dark cafe, service is ok, and interesting decor.
The coffee is good and the prices are fair.
Limited and simple brekaky and lunch menu and what you expect with a small simple unpretentious cafe.
And that's why they are good. It is unpretentious so thankfully no hipster cold drip coffees etc etc etc, so do not judge them on that.
Only fault, the sweets are a few days old, how do I know, I was at another cafe two days ago and saw the exact same sweets, a merengue cake and hot cross bun and had both and we're great, and today I had the latter and it was a tad dry, not fresh.
So, they may need to buy less stock and keep them fresh.
FrigginMe
Great coffee!. Nice breaky experience, one of the best coffee around Richmond.

Single origin coffee was very good. Food was nice but nothing amazing. Staff a bit clueless but friendly enough

The manager/owner was rude. Several things, over several days/weeks (dont know why I kept doing it to myself)

Had been visiting this place regularly for close to two years, buying a coffee each time as I work in the area, the one time I didnt have cash I asked if I could use my card and anyone wouldve thought it was the end of the world! "Oh nope mate cant do that we get charged a massive fee for transactions under $10" (its between 20-50cents, maybe just wear it once for a good customer)
so I didnt go back, then had to go back a few days ago as my new regular cafe was close for the holidays, I ordered my regular latte, the girl on the coffee machine makes a flat white, she was yelling out "take away flat white!?" I didnt respond coz I obviously didnt order that, then the guy grabs it off her and says "thats yours mate, just take it, its a coffee it does the same things" and you know what, he's completely right, but its not what I ordered, at least try make an effort and offer to make me a new one.

also, food is ridiculously over priced, and looks sad in that display cabinet.
$13 for a bagel with 2 rocket leaves, fatty bacon, and over ripen avocado!

Love. New to reviewing on here and wanted to make sure I shout out to this place! The staff feel like old friends, coffee is excellent, cute little patio is just an awesome place to wile away time. Yummy food includes breakfast burrito, acai (spelling?!) berry granola, croque Madame (especially hungover!). Sort of don't want it getting too popular though because it would kill me if I had to line up to get a table like the many pretentious (yet great) places in Richmond. This place is def not pretentious.

Just loved it here. The food, the service and the atmosphere. OBSC ticks all the boxes. Highly recommended

Great little spot with great food and service.

Discovered this discreet cafe after walking back to my car from an appointment one day and glad I did! Been twice now for its great coffee and friendly smiles.

Good coffee, bad attitude. Have had great coffee here in the past so decided to drop in for brunch. My wife ordered an açaí since it's one of the few places in Melbourne to serve it in the Brazilian style with granola and banana. She loved it. My first two requests from the menu both came back unavailable - they'd run out already. I requested eggs on toast with some chorizo, after seeing both on nearby plates and therefore assuming it would be available. The waiter went to ask the chef, who very abruptly said no. Apparently only menu orders were being accepted, despite the fact that a lot of the menu wasn't available. The reason given was that they were 'backed up' .... the place was half empty. One would have thought that eggs and chorizo would have been a lot quicker to prepare than some of the other menu items, but the cook (I think chef is too generous a term) wasn't able to handle this complication in the midst of the rush of 10 or so diners. The waiter (a young redhead bloke) was apologetic, friendly and made alternate suggestions (felt sorry for him having to deliver the cook's news), however I decided to stick with coffee which this place does very well.

Disappointing; will ensure to keep this one on the coffee list, but nothing more.

YUCKY. This cafe has alot of potential with its location and and day core, Yet on the 2 occasions I have been the food was ok the first time and inedible the second. It is sad that the menu is typical of a run of the mill (nasty) cafe food that have been sitting in the glass cabinet hours past their used by date (reeks of an over priced bistro!) The staff were friendly but I would not recommend this establishment for the food, service or coffee.

Best coffee in Melbourne. I often go far out of my way to get the coffee here, it is consistently the best. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful

Great coffee, excellent croissants served with delicious jam and a very welcoming crew. Lovely.

Just had Moroccan eggs. Wonderful. I moved to Richmond a month ago and this place has become a firm favourite. Great service, great food and a very relaxed atmosphere.

A Cut Above. Dined here for brunch recently and abso LOVED IT. Major complaint was that meals were so moreish I had to spend half my time eating trying to keep my sister and partner from stealing my food. How was I supposed to do that AND get at their unwatched plates, myself? Managed to score bites of the granola and the NY bagel and have been thinking about them both since. Small menu- big delivery. Yum yum yum!

Great Atmosphere. Excellent coffee, friendly staff. The outdoor deck is perfect for warm days. Wheelchair friendly.

Super friendly helpful staff member made us welcome and whilst the food and tea were the usual fare we enjoyed it all the more in our relaxed friendly setting.

Delicious Coffee!. I only just discovered this place and I'm so glad I did. The staff are always smiling and very friendly. It has a great outdoor area and cute indoor atmosphere. The food was yummy and the coffee was perfect. Great little cafe, I highly recommend it.

Perfect Sunday breakie, great coffee and food, staff are brilliant and setting is just right. Love it

As a regular patron I am very excited to see that the outdoor deck has been revamped for winter with big umbrellas, clear plastic 'walls' AND a heater to keep cosy by! I'll see you out the front this weekend :)

Having been a big fan of The Old Barber Shops sister cafe, Torch, for many years I thought I'd give this one a go. Very good coffee, love the little harlequin cups! I had the salted caramel and chocolate tart- amazing!
Jess
I have to agree with a few other people who have written reviews. I used to really like this place and used to get coffee alot, however as of late the coffee has been crap and the staff have been so rude. There are plenty of other places in Richmond with better coffee, food and service.

YUM!. My coffee was perfect and the Croque Madam was a real treat! Absolutely delicious food in a charming location...

I stumbled across this lovely little terrace with its fabulous deck out the front on my stroll to the market. What a great coffee - I had the single origin. Couldn't resist the breakfast salad. Friendly staff, no huge egos and a warm greeting. No better way to start the day!

Yummy! Great little cafe in Richmond. Had the most amazing toasted chicken sandwich today with cranberry chutney. I really wish they sell the chutney on it's own in the future. Simply delicious! Will definately be going back to try the other lovely treats on offer.

Lovely cafe with a very relaxed vibe, friendly staff and a beautiful front courtyard that is perfect for enjoying a coffee with company (especially a beautiful girlfriend). So far everything I've tried on the menu has been fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. Definitely recommend this place, enjoy!

This cafe is tucked away on church St and is one of those establishments that you hope to come across more often. It had such a relaxed vibe either sitting our front or perched up at the communal bench inside. Staff are super and provide no fuss service. I had a cappuccino that was there own house blend and it was pretty fair. This was followed by the homemade granola topped with fresh yoghurt and a side of rhubarb & berry compote. They also provided a small serving of milk to add. The granola was top quality and I could have easily gone another bowl (not because it was a small serve but because it tasted so good!) I would definitely make an effort to try this out for yourself. I'd like to return and try the acai berry with granola and the chai masala! Top Spot

Whilst the coffee is great, one of the baristas make for an unpleasant experience with lack of customer service and rudeness. Shame, as most of the staff are very helpful and friendly. Won't be returning.

Friendly staff, really quick service. Great croque madame and my gf had the egg and bacon nutty which was fantastic to! Great find on urbanspoon. Will def go again when we are in Melbourne again.
Josiah
The perfect cafe experience. We are glad we followed the advice of fellow urbanspoonites. The croque Madame was marvellous! Same with the acai berry and Cai latte. Great staff and lovely building.

So much to chose from!. There was so many things I wanted on the menu! I had the Croque Madame which was excellent, the egg on top just the right type of runny. My friends all enjoyed their meals and I'm told their coffees and teas were also top notch (they had more than one cup, always a good sign!). The staff were friendly and able to accommodate our group of 7 even though it was 10.30 on a Saturday morning. If you have a little one make sure you order a babycino, the topping they give it is very cute :-) In case you haven't guessed I was very happy with the Barber Shop and plan to go back soon and start working my way through the rest of the menu!
Mon
Fellow Reviewers - THANKYOU!. Based wholly on fellow reviewers I ventured to the Old Barber Shop for brunch this morning. My goodness - you are spot on! This place is fabulous and SO Richmond; a little eccentric, very funky and fabulously spot on with it's menu! Love it!

Could not recommend highly enough. Some of the friendliest baristas in Melbourne who make your breakfast or lunch outing a personal one. They make the effort to remember your name and how you take your coffee. This sort of service is seen less and less but never goes unappreciated. The food is simple but incredibly delicious. Sticking to the "good honest food" theme you'll find delectable wraps, bagels and toasties - all presented upon wooden chopping boards, a warming homely touch which suits the cafe to a tee. Today we had the shredded corned beef with mustard pickle on a toasted bagel & bacon, egg, roquette and a delicious tomato relish on a sesame seed bun. Might sound too simple, but is just what we wanted for breakfast. Highly recommend the cranberry chilli jam with the B.L.A.T bagel. Wow. So good! Enjoy!!

A worthy 100%. Fresh off the plane from Sydney, I hunted down this cafe based on urban spoon. (and my location!) perefectly crunchy, oaty, nutty granola with a rhubarb comport. Service was impeccable, coffee bang on. A very Melbourne cafe, right down to the serif font on the brown paper menus. Loved it.

Love this place!!. Danny has got it right with this new place! He's created a genuinely relaxed but somewhat sophisticated looking cafe with excellent coffee and food to match. Inside the wooden bench seats and wood panelling give the place a warm and comfortable feel whilst outside on the front deck on a sunny day there is no better place to drink Richmonds best coffee. If food is on your mind the Breakfast Salad with a medley of tomatoes, basil, feta topped with a poached egg is just perfect. The prosciutto piadina makes for a great midmorning snack with a coffee when you feel like savoury instead of sweet. The piadina bread is thin and crispy and tastes like the ones in Italy. The Bacon and Egg Butty is a flash version of a bacon and egg roll but has added rocket and a great tasting relish. Overall a great new and much needed addition to the Church and Bridge Rd corner.
Once Bitten
Liked it!. Great refurb of the old Barbers of Seville site - love the wooden floorboards and benches and impressive display of cakes and savouries in the front. coffee is good, as was the home-made granola and the egg and bacon breakfast roll. Will be back to try some of those cakes!
MelbourneChaiTimes
The best pot brewed Chai latte I’ve found in Melbourne is at the Old Barber Shop in Church Street, Richmond. The Chai is divine in all aspects. It tastes sweet but not too sweet, nor too strong on the black tea leaves.

The Old Barber Shop is perfectly ideal for those awkward business meetings that go well over time and you don’t want to get the eye (the one which says, can you please move on, table hire is $30 an hour) that some cafes serve.

In fact, I think this post is pretty much my way of saying “thank you” for letting us chill for so long without ordering anything super substantial!

There is a smint outdoor area, perfect for sunnies and lattes, as well as a long table indoors. The service is efficient and w

The Croque Madame is a knockout, as is the New York deli corned beef bagel with tangy mustard pickle and potato crisps. For health nuts, there’s granola with acai berry, or a breakfast salad with tomatoes, olives and avocado.

If you're into caffeine, try the Barber Shop blend or single origin. If you're not, go for a milkshake, Italian hot chocolate, Masala Chai or organic tea. I wen

My heart skipped when I saw the waitress approach with our breakfast. They were served on gorgeous wooden boards with terracotta coloured dishes for the sides. My Croque-Madame looked spectacular with a fried egg draped over the top. It has a small side of rocket to provide some greenery... Once I pierced the drippy yolk of the fried egg, the golden goo provided each bite with the perfect amount of lubrication. The melted cheese on the top also stepped in with another dimension of savoury goodness.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Feeling a little under the weather and warned off smash with feta, I picked cosy comfort food called El Tigre: a corned beef toastie with tasty cheese, pickles, onion jam and chimchurri. With a side of crisps and a cup of tea. This was fabulous and our pick of the day. Tender, fall apart corned beef, good bread and an injection of acid from the onion jam and the pickles.
