Love this cafe. The food is amazing, the balance of flavours is spot on, and each plate is so enticingly presented. I've come here a number of times with colleagues, and everyone agrees it's a great cafe with plenty of menu choices, whether you want a delicious meaty burger stack, or a vegan salad. I've always found the staff super friendly, which adds to a relaxed vibe, service is prompt, and you can tell the owner enjoys what he does, and respects his team. I love that they offer a good quality almond milk for coffees, and some gluten free cake options. All-in-all, an amazing cafe.
It's been a while since I've had a great brunch. Had the trout; gorgeously presented, perfectly balanced and portioned. The sweet potato, smoked trout, & crispy capers combo was a revelation in itself. Kudos to the genius chef who designed such a beautiful, intricate dish. Cant wait to bring mates here and try the other items on the menu.
Jethro Lemonade..... wow! What a great use of these previously neglected buildings. Great vibe, excellent coffee and a versatile menu. Could easily become the new go to place in Burnley.
Unseasonable gale force winds and a bumper crowd did nothing to dampen our first experience of Jethro. Service was prompt, friendly, and efficient; the coffee was excellent; the food was delicious with surprising twists and flavours. Classy and comfortable. Loved it.
Always get my coffee from here, it always tastes great. The team are always friendly and smile when you walk in the door. omg and the cruffings are wow, I limit myself to one a month.
I’ve lived in Richmond my entire life and am excited that Jethros is here. Thank you.
Wow camel milk latte. One hump or 2? Lol. What an experience. Fabulous healthy delicious menu. Good acoustics, very uncommon for inner city cafes. Plenty of parking for the area.
Comfy seats, great service, delicious food. The gold standard of cafes.
Awesome food and coffee, very well plated and friendly staff - will definitely be back to eat my way through the menu!
Incredible food and great service. I will definitely be back!
Love Jethro . I drink almond milk lattes and I love that they have good quality almond milk that is not from a tetra pack ... I love the friendliness and hospitality of the staff who acknowledge me as soon as I walk in the door and some times my coffee is even ready by the time I have ordered and paid for it . Great work guys .
Excellent service , beautiful delicious food , will be back
Sometimes the best spots are just off the main road. This is one of them. Superb coffee, fine food all in a wonderfully light and airy cafe. Do it.
Hanging outta Burnley the Dirty Chai was so good.
Great service and excellent food. Vegan options as well.
Lovely cafe to check out in the hub of Richmond! Great food, coffee and ambience. I had the rhubarb porridge with a biscuit crumble, which was perfectly sweet and decadent. Have to give this cafe another visit soon.
This dish was absolute heaven, especially for a rainy Melbourne day! It was the perfect size with great tropical fruit flavours and a perfect crunchy crumb! The coffee was also one of my favourites 😍🥰
The venue was lovely and the staff were truly friendly and helpful, we loved our visit here!!
Pictured is the Mixed Grain Tropical Porridge (mango, pineapple & passion fruit topped with coconut yoghurt & a white chocolate & almond crumb) & Skim Latte
I haven't been here for a long time and as this cafe is air conditioned it was a no brainer on a really hot day!
The service was warm and welcoming. I grabbed a seat looking out onto the street, which was great for people watching on this busy street.
My strong skinny latte was delicious, the coffee had a great flavour, their was some good milk froth and not too hot! Tick tick tick. Woo hoo lol.
Food wise I ordered some scrambled eggs on some
seeded pumpkin bread. When it hit the table I was like whoa, I've hit the table I was like whoa!!
The eggs were good, golden and tasty. This was a solid dish, and my only thing that let this dish down was the toast. The toast was quite dry, which was unfortunate.
Overall this was a good meal, great service and excellent coffee. Oh and the old school music was pretty cool. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Previous review July 2018
Called in here for a t/a coffee this morning. This is the ONLY cafe on Burnley St that I’ve seen open over the Xmas period. Yay lol
Which explains why this cafe was so busy. But the service was really friendly and lighting quick. Perfect!
Hey the coffee however was scalding hot!! Why???
I burnt my tongue trying to drink it so it was hard to taste the rest of the drink. A disappointing start to my day. But I’ll go back and specify a warm latte only haha
Had a quick brekkie here on a Saturday. I ordered chilli scramble while my partner had eggs on toast. My latte was delicious and the iced coffee actually came with icecreme to my partner's delight. Service was quick and efficient. One con: toast too hard to cut through.
Overall a pleasant experience. Thank you for having us.
Impeccable service and amazing coffee make this gem of a cafe in Richmond a real treat to visit. With it's warm and cosy vibe, and relaxed decor; hanging out here is such a pleasure.
I have found the staff to be really friendly and service is always efficient and timely. The food is also really good, and the baked goods are a special treat. Jethro Canteen is one of my favourite cafes in this part of town.
Just enjoyed a yummy Mother’s Day brunch here. We ordered the Seasonal Mushroom Medley, the Sweet Potato Rosti and the Seasonal Veggie Bowl. We all loved our meals and the coffee was great too. Great service and tables and toilets were clean. Look forward to coming back.
Right at the end of Burnley Street, Richmond is where you'll find this cafe. I stumbled across it quite accidentally but was not disappointed. The weather was beginning to change to a crisp Wintery evening and I ordered the ratatouille. It was flavoursome, warm and hearty. Served with bread and generous helpings of mozzarella, I was definitely happy! The staff were very friendly.

I’ve been going to this cafe for lunch , 3 days in a row now... the food is so so sooo good... it’s pleasing in the eye, on my mouth and on my belly LOL... the first day I got their special, was grilled Chicken with broccoli and cauliflower rice (didn’t take pic) the second day I had a simple egg and bacon and avocado which was extra delicious, and the third day I had their new special, witch is crab omelette with chilli and pickled cucumber... that was AWESOME!!! I’m not gonna stop coming back, since I work just across the street now.. :)
Come try the iced soy chai latte... mama Mia!
PS: the French girl behind the counter is super friendly and always smiling. Love that! Xoxo
Consistently great food and friendly service. The tomato medley was delicious! Coffee had great flavor. Chocolate milkshake was a little on the weak side (but loved that it actually looked like a milkshake).
When you see a bowl of crickets on the menu (for the bargain price of $6), you start to get a little bit nervous - is this cafe actually any good, or do they need to rely on the shock factor of serving insects to get people through the door? But luckily for me, on dining at Jethro Canteen, it didn't take me long to realise there was nothing to be nervous about.
A cafe that has crickets on the menu! That's really all you need to know. While my partner and I aren't avid bug-eaters, we definitely do not mind eating bugs, cleaned and cooked of course.
My partner ordered the Buffalo Tray which comprised of gooey and delicious mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto, crisped sourdough soldiers. and the most amazing roasted eggplant sugo we had in a long time. He paired this with a side of crickets, which was quite expensive at $6 for a small bowl, but it was wonderfully crunchy, and incredibly delicious when mixed with the smoky eggplant sugo as the crickets had only a very mild flavour.
I ordered the black sesame pancakes with kumquats, sour cream and a sesame almond cookie. The pancake was soft and airy texture-wise, perfection! Kumquats slices were mixed into the batter, and both kumquat slices and jam were layered between each pancake. Unfortunately this meant that the kumquats overwhelmed the whole dish and masked the black sesame flavour. The sour cream and cookie did helped cut through the tanginess of the kumquats though.
Both the skinny lattes that we ordered were slightly hot, but cool down to a comfortable drinking temperature reasonably quickly.
Lovely and friendly service all around, and the inviting space dotted with greenery makes for a relaxing brunch.
Coffee and service is always good here. I had the sweet potato fritter and it was delicious but came to the table slightly cold. Staff are always friendly also, especially the baristas
A brilliant find for a central brunch spot.
I went here with a group of friends for lunch on a Sunday, the staff were really nice and promptly assisted us with menu suggestions as well as providing fast service. I had the mushroom dish and was loving every single bite! Everyone’s plates were beautiful and completely devoured. Would 100% come back to try more.
We experienced a couple of mistakes by the staff such as a chai latte instead of a soy latte etc but the owner at this cafe was so lovely so I've given it a slightly higher rating than I normally would have. The bircher was different to any other I've ever had before. It had a grainy texture to it which was a weird consistency but I liked the taste. The coconut yoghurt was a highlight of the dish and would normally fill me but I found the dish wasn't overly satisfying. My friend loved her burger and said the slaw was amazing. I'd happily return to try their next menu.
Relaxing cafe to sit and enjoy a coffee, almost any time of the day. Multiple papers available to read along the windows in between people watching. The music is a mix of all the good stuff you listened to when you were younger. Also, if you BYO there’s a cup discount.
Came here for breakfast with my bf, due to its close proximity to his house, and we were keen to give it a go. I ordered the okonomiyaki and added poached eggs, and he ordered the chilli scrambled eggs. My dish was really nice, the combination of spring onion, pickled ginger and the sauces was delicious. But we both thought the chilli eggs lacked a bit of flavour. The coffee that we had was very nice though, had a lovely taste. Would consider coming back due to its location, but not my favourite cafe in Richmond.
Pretty good experience. The venue is nice and warming. Staff friendly. plenty to choose from on the menu. Cold brew was top quality and the healthy bowl was surprisingly great.
For Sydney taste buds this breakfast was an explosion of varied salty, and delicious flavours.
The 'special' was indeed special - Poached egg yolks of liquid gold; Asparagus, ricotta, prosciutto
wrapping up the bundles of deliciousness. Black salt sprinkled on the eggs. (Now tell me - 🤔what makes it black???)
Coffee full of flavour - a real Melbourne coffee. Only wish it was my local.
My first visit to Jethro Canteen was on a busy sunny lunch shift and I was lucky to seated in a sunny window position. The coffee was excellent, as was the soy chai (made with special instructions, thank you). I mostly loved my meal...I had the warm green breakfast bowl and although the veggie selection was fresh and tasty the dressing was very oily and lacked lemon. I had to ask for a wedge to improve the dish. It was also extremely small, no more than a cup measure of food, leaving me extremely hungry and for $19, it was extremely expensive. I think it was clear I wasn't happy, because at the till, nobody asked me if I enjoyed my meal, although the cashier did ask the people who paid before me.
Hands down the best porridge we've had this winter. White Choc and almond crumble grain porridge is definitely what got us thru our Monday, bit more on the sweet side which was right up my alley :) This cafe is right near the corner of Burnley and Swan St and a short walk from Burnley station, the huge windows gives a nice view of the hustling bustling streets as we enjoyed our breakfast.
Crazy place, I really like it. Fabulous energy and ambience. The shared table is nicely set out. Some cafes have awful seats, but there's are comfortable.
I love their camel milk lattes, v interesting.
Their big breakfast with eggs is very nice too. They do interesting food choices such as crickey salad (not for me, but interesting to look at).
Staff are very friendly and attentive.
Highly recommended:)))
The bake eggs is good. Prefer purple breakfast, as the kale and the pumpkin taste good. Recommend it. Lovely morning with lovely taste torts side.
The menu sparkles with originality and I was famished and ready for breakfast. My green breakfast bowl was flavoursome but left me hungry. My friends kale salad was way more substantial with toast and two eggs not one. Crew were fine.
Had the waffles with pannacotta and the Louisiana plate. Very satisfied with both. Good presentation and taste really good.
Who doesn't like a wobbly pannacotta.. That black lava salt works really well with the pannacotta.
Love the spicy jalepeno and the guacamole. Would love an additional piece of bread to go with the corn remoulade and poached eggs, had to eat the egg by itself as the meal only came with one slice of bread.
The staff are welcoming and seem quite knowledgeable about the menu, which is important when you have a million and one questions about what contains what. The food and coffee came out really quickly which was great. My cappuccino wasn’t burnt which is always a positive, but it tasted slightly on the weaker side. However, it really comes down to preference and I do prefer my coffee a little stronger. One odd thing you will notice about the menu is that alongside the soy and almond milk options, you will find that they also offer camel’s milk. Someone – please give this a go and let me know how it is! I’m so curious but definitely not game enough haha 🙂
I opted for the pumpkin grain toast with my beloved PB & J! I hadn’t eaten bread in forever and decided it was time to feed into those cravings. The first thing I noticed was that the size of the toast was generously large which was a huge tick. The peanut butter and jam portions were sufficient, meaning I didn’t have to look greedy and ask for more halfway through.
Jethro for breakfast, excellent. The coffee was brewed to perfection, had to have 2. The Coconut and Almond chia was amazing and the service quick and efficient and atmosphere great. The cakes i would highly recommend, the cheesecake, and the almond croissant were both divine.
Expensive Delicious Habit.

Last weekend I stopped in at Jethro Canteen to catch up with my school friends. Good coffee in decent sized cups. Interesting meal options that all proved to be delicious. Friendly staff and an enticing selection of baked goods!
Jethro Canteen is very close to home and on my journey exploring the Melbourne foodie scene, I noticed it!. Jethro Canteen is located on a busy corner of Burnley and Swan Street. The cafe itself has both indoor and out door seating and is very spacious. On this particular Saturday morning we decided a seat indoors was the best option. We were warmly greeted by a waitress, guided to the table and handed our menus. I ordered my usual Long Black with milk on the side and Mr B ordered a long black I feel like Ms DeG has been replaced in coffee orders.
Such a nice healthy breakfast! Also the best coffee I've had in Melbourne, will definitely come back. Staff were friendly and the vibe is awesome... thanks a lot to the team at jethro- we will be back! !!!
Popped into this cafe after doing a bit of furniture shopping. Drawn in by the crowd and the gorgeous interior. We had such a nice meal here! The cafe was pretty busy but the waitress was able to sit us at the massive communal table. The coffee here was really good - one of the better coffees I've had in a while!
I ordered the Purple Kale - super filling + delicious. the hazelnut hummus was interesting but maybe a little bit too much was served for me.
The Louisiana Plate was deceiving in size - the bacon was thick cut, and the jalapeño popper was a really nice spin on a big breakfast option.
The special today was a Sweet Potato Rosti and my sister swapped out the poached eggs for scrambled. The rosti was nice, not too dry but she mentioned that the eggs were too buttery for her liking.
The Panzella was so good! The entire dish was loaded with flavour and is another really filling option.
The prices definitely reflect the portions. Our entire bill was around $85 for 4 people (including coffees and a chai) and we were totally full.
Stopped by for Breakfast yesterday with some friends. I ordered a Flat White to start and it was so nice I had to get a second before I left. The Waiting staff were cheery, helpful and attentive. The food was superb, I ordered a basic eggs, bacon & toast and it was cooked just right. To top it all off, one of the plates was served approx 5 minutes after the others (no big deal), however the management acknowledged this as we were leaving and took the coffees off the bill.. what a beautiful way to start a Sunny Sunday in Melbourne.. Will Definitely go back!!
Louisiana plate is amazing .. probably the best breakfast dish I've ever had. The service unfortunately was slow. If you've got time to wait I highly recommend their food.
Been driving past as it evolved
looked like it was exactlty how it should be..
.. and i was right .. .first time today to dine
Very impressed awsum coffee made with st davids milk and my poached eggs n mushies could not have been better even got 2 pieces of sourdough cut and cooked as it should b..
Other meals coming out looked amazing
Will be more adventurous next time..
Def b back..
Well done guys
Been back so many times since
Not once has it been anything other than perfect
Even the Spotify selection has the vibe right on point.
I've always been a fan of Jethro Canteen, but in the last few weeks they have really outdone themselves. Perhaps it's the spirit in the lead up to Christmas or a new staff member in the kitchen, but the food has been particularly innovative and outstanding latterly. I took a friend from out of town last week and we had the Jerk chicken salad, it really was second to none...In addition, I've noticed a lovely waitress 'Steph' always provides a service with a smile; she has made my day on more than one occasion. What was once an 'accidental lunch' has led to a must-go weekly destination, keep up the good grub guys! I'll be back in due course...
Popped by for brekkie this morning & tried the waffles with burnt maple, baked pear, honey joy crumble & cereal milk panna cotta. Overall it was a nice dish, and a generous serving, however a little too sweet. The panna cotta was deliciously silky smooth & had the perfect wobble! It broke up the sweetness well. I didn't really understand the presence of the black salt, as I couldn't find where it fit in with the rest of the dish. My pear was a little on the hard side, usually I prefer the fruit poached but it gave a nice natural sweetness, whereas the sauce was a little overbearing & the honeyjoy crumble was difficult to eat with a knife & fork. My skinny latte was delicious - I loved the glass cup it came in!
Food: 3.5/5
Environment: 3.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
Drove past this space as it was being renovated and had been hanging out to visit since it opened. I have to say that Jethro Canteen completely exceeded all expectations! Firstly, the fit out is brilliant and the big glass windows at the front of the establishment make it a great place for people watching (including watching for ticket inspectors). The food was outstanding and it is clear that the chef has struck the perfect balance, as the food is modern and original without being completely outrageous. The fried chicken burger was to die for and its accompanying potato gems topped it off perfectly - certainly something I would order again. Hot chocolates are heaven for those hot chocolate lovers out there and the coffee is also excellent (barista also responded appropriately to my request of 'extra hot' which I appreciated). Finally, the service was attentive and helpful without being nosy or loitering uncomfortably. They were smiley, approachable and genuine and for that reason I would recommend this place to anyone!
Delicious food, prompt service and decent coffee.
Highly recommend The Louisiana Plate - just watch out for the jalepeno popper!
Accommodating of young children with 2x highchairs.
Came here on a Sunday morning. Really good menu with some interesting brunch options (no standard "smashed avo" on the menu). Absolutely LOVED the hummus bread with poached eggs and the almond chai latte. I will be going back here again very soon.
Hipster exposed brick semi industrial feel/layout with hints of green (pot plants) strategically splashed around to make it inviting.
Cool laid back/funk american tunes playing, which really matches the menu. Its kind of re-imagined/updated american fare with modern oz twist. Helpful friendly staff. Funky vibe. Lots of people chowing down on brunch (even at 1:20pm on a friday).
Got little ones? There are highchairs available. Air conditioning blows the length of the building to keep the temp comfortable.
Theres a wide range of coffee and pastry options (Wide Open Road Coffee is a supplier). As well as ready made panini for quick grab and go lunch which looked pretty tasty.
Cold filter coffee was a little weaker than i like but still nice. Maybe a little much ice as it melts and waters it down. But pleasant to sip away at whilst I waited for lunch.
I was recommended the Old Bay Chicken Burger (Old Bay is a spice blend in the US). Incredibly crunchy thin batter on the outside, very moist chicken thigh. Hints of chilli and mustard seeds pop in the slaw. The addition of herbs just elevates the overall flavour and cuts through the creamy dressing. The tater tots are also perfect. But maybe a smear of 'ketchup' or mustard to tie them in. 10minutes after I finish my meal and the old bay and chilli taste still lingers. exactly what you want.
Price wise its probably on par with the area or anywhere else now a days serving a decent brunch/lunch. The other meals I saw looked really good: Lamb Schnitzel, something that looked like a new age Cesar salad and the Louisiana plate looked hearty.
Will definitely go back to try a few other meals.
The lamb meat is really juicy, the poached eggs are really amazing👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 i am really impressed by the food! Definitely coming back next time🙈 it is worth to wait more than 15 minutes❤️
DELICIOUS! Coffee and food so good. Will definitely be going back. Cold brew coffee on a warm day went down far too easily (stopped at 2 but could have easily had 3), the pumpkin/egg/hummus dish was a healthy - yet full of flavour -start to the morning.
Cute, local cafe with a typically simplistic Melbourne style interior.
Drinks: I ordered a flat white and my partner ordered a mocha, both of which were smooth and lovely. They have a cold drip option too, which we might try when it gets warmer.
Food: I ordered the Louisiana. The individual ingredients were great, with the guacamole being a standout. My partner ordered the fried chicken burger which looked amazing and the black brioche bun was an interesting twist.
Service was lovely and friendly and the waitress who served us was super likable.
All in all, it's not somewhere I'd travel just to eat at, but it's a wonderful local cafe to brunch at on a day off.
Great new place to rival Friends Of Mine and Serotonin which are nearby.
Lots of seating inside and outside which is handy.
No smashed avo on the menu which is blasphemy nowadays! 😜
I ordered the Purple Kale, cauliflower, pearl barley salad on hummus bread with poached eggs.
It was tasty but I would have loved to have the bread toasted - I don't think it was at all... and if it was, a little longer under the heat would have been great.
Will be back again though.
Given a moment to think, one could very quickly reel off half a dozen new cafes that have begun life in Richmond in the past year. Jethro Canteen, on Burnley Street, at the back East end of this great suburb, is the latest to be born.
There are some nice differences in the fitout that set it apart from many others in recent times, but it is still the clean minimalist look associated with this era in design. I particularly like the flourishes of green, and the exposed brick, in this wide rectangular double fronted old shop. Naturally with the length, the windows allow a lot of light through to fill the cafe with brightness.
Despite Sunday being the windiest day in Richmond's history, Codalicious and I braved the elements to try out Jethro Canteen. We are glad we did.
House made cola was a perfect start for slightly hungover foodies... the chicken burger (served with potato gems - seriously good format of potatoes... and no I'm not 7 years old!) was sensational. The black bun was quite interesting.
The cheese and kisses had a great version of a big breakky.... bacon steak and a prawn skewer the clear highlights.
Service was good, and quick, despite being chockers.
Gorgeous reno of an old building right near corner of Swan and Burnley St. Think this precinct is about to take off in a big way so these guys are in on the ground floor.
Opened last Tuesday. Greeted with a friendly smile ,newspapers, uber cool decor and exquisite coffee. Have not yet eaten here but will do so soon. Was really busy early on a Sunday morning so the word is out!
Went here on a Sunday morning, didn't have to wait for a table, awesome layout and decor, incredible staff and reasonable prices. The food was delicious, the super green salad is a must, and of course you can build your own big breaky! Amazing range of sweet treats but nothing raw or gf today which was a shame and the coffee was on the cold side but to be honest you can't complain... Will definitely be back!
Damn son.
First off - a cute, red brick interior with heaps of light. Tick.
Then there were $3 batch brew filter (lovely beans from Wide Open Road) and a beautiful breaky salad from chef Paul Davies (formerly of Merchant's Guild). M'lady did the chia pudding thing.
Thanks for moving into our hood, Jethro peeps! We're not sure about the crickets but we'll be back for the rest of it!
Vibe is just perfect.
Music is not too loud.
Toilet is very clean and tidy!
Coffee is good sweets are good.
Comfortable
Will definitely come again and highly recommend to anyone
Good coffee, lovely staff❤️ Absolutely loved rainbow bowl here🌈
Love how they put pesto into egg and bacon roll. That’s so yummy.
Fantastic Cafe.
The front of house staff are always very helpful and friendly.
Coffee is fantastic, as it the hot chocolate!
Oh and the food, very tasty, alway fresh!
One of the best cafes I have been to.
BEST COFFEE. BEST FOOD! BEST ATMOSPHERE! GREAT SERVICE. I’ve been getting my daily coffee from jethro for 3 years now. Hands down the best coffee 🙌🏼 and fantastic toasties, soup and other tasty food!
If you haven’t been to jethro, go check it out.
