Review May Kwai - Rose Bay

I’ve been patronising this local since I was a teenager in the 70’s. It never disappoints. The service can sometimes be a bit abrasive but who cares if the food is good. I arrived late after work a few minutes before the kitchen closed and they still accommodated me. The chicken laksa was most enjoyable. It’s so nice to see this Chinese restaurant is still with us after the pandemic. So many others no longer exist. Xie Xie 😊

Cannot stop coming here! the peking duck and mongolian lamb is a must. Sweet and sour pork is a close second. San chow bow also very good.

Food was good.I phoned for a take away. The lady who took my order was the rudest person I have ever encountered When I complained all I got was a cold "Okay".They should not let her anywhere near the telephone and people at the desk should learn a little PR.

We were looking for a place to eat locally. The food was great, not a long waiting time, we had veg gow her were delicious, roast duck (on the bone and chose to not have any sauce) was delicious. Veges and tofu were great. The flavours were clear and fresh. The staff are kind and friendly. It was a nice relaxed meal all round.

Best Chinese in the east. I recommend the Mongolian lamb and long soup been going for years and absolutely love it. The service is lovely and the staff always know how to make you feel welcome.

Been a customer for over 17 years. Freshest Chinese food in the East by a longshot. Everything on the menu great. Especially honey King prawn, duck & squid. 5 Star

Have been eating here for over 30 years and the food is consistently good. It is always good traditional Chinese food with all the favourites. Staff are friendly and I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for some great Chinese food

This has been a successful restaurant in Rose Bay for maybe 50 years. That tells you something. We turned up without a booking, but they made room for us anyway and made us feel very welcome. The waitress was a lot of fun which just added to the ambience. Great food. We all wished that we'd ordered more, so next time we'll order a main dish for each person.

This is as far as it can be from anything that is real Chinese food. Every dish was saturated in vegetable oil and bland to the taste. Service was fast but not friendly. The wine list well priced and passable but the beer was a listing of conglomerate swill. A restaurant to avoid. Very disappointing.

Been coming here for years now, one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area, would recommend the san choi bow and mongolian lamb. Service is so so, what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant, though they are very family friendly. Portions and prices are very reasonable as well.

This place has me baffled. It has been around for decades, so they are obviously doing something right. It is often full with large groups of local families or groups of friends. It seems to have a loyal clientele, so they can't be this bad. Tonight was our second visit. The Mongolian lamb is great, but we also ordered chicken in soya sauce (not sure of the exact name of the dish) and I was shocked by the dish. It was just lumps of chicken meat still with bone and fat attached. It looked really ... unpleasing (I am thinking of a different word, but try to be objective). The second thing that baffled me was the service. It is quite unprofessional, clumsy and hectic. The tipping point for me was when I asked for the bill and the waiter had the mouth full of food, chewing, apparently eating his dinner. It is well possible that one day we will return, but I think it will be quite a while until we do that.

Great Chinese. Family friendly and a high quality of food, we order take away regularly and often dine in as well. We are local and it's a well used restaurant by locals, which should speak for itself as a recommendation.

We ate take away from here so i'll only comment about the food. Its One of the better Chinese restaurants and they had 4 dishes ready in ten minutes . Food is great, portions are decent and price is reasonable. Would recommend!

Better than Haymarket restaurants. Fantastic chinese food. We have been here every couple of months for the past few years and it is consistently good. We are looking forward to our peking duck and live lobster on Saturday night

Great service, friendly staff. Old decor however the food is fantastic.

Enjoyable Chinese restaurant in the eastern suburbs. Affordable.

Terrible food with awful service, crispy pork should be called soggy, the duck was cold, and noodles were like instant ones. The rice was ok they managed not to ruin that

Good, reasonably priced Chinatown-style restaurant. Go here often with my family and as a couple. Recommend the Peking Duck.

Mai Kwai is a great child friendly Chinese restaurant. Food is genuine and quality is Chinatown authentic and generous. Can't go wrong

Make way for the Mongolian Lamb. Been coming here for ages. Ok, the decor has not been changed in 30 years. But the place is clean and has a steady and happily returning clientele. I like the Sang Choy Bow and the Mongolian Sizzling Lamb. Vege fried rice tasty. Recommend the steamed veges in oyster sauce. Good meal at very reasonable prices.GregFresser

Disastorous. After hearing all the hype to the so called abulous May Kwai I was unfortunately disappointed. The restaurant is a complete disaster, would not reccomend it to anyone. The Food is 2nd class, the customer service is certainly not 1st class and the hygeine is like a toilet in kings cross. The owners should sell because I can't see them making any money. They do not take the restaurant serious they employ children.
