The eggplant miso was amazing. The rest of the food was fantastic. Amazing quality & service. No need to travel into the city for fine Japanese dining!
Beautiful food, excellent helpful and friendly staff, amazing tasteful decor. Very enjoyable experience! Xx
The best Japanese restaurant in this part of town. Enjoy every dish we had. Service was excellent. We'll be back!
another great nite.

Have been meaning to try this place out for quite some time now and have to say, I am pretty impressed so far!!! The jap curry here is pretty good and for a decent price too!!!! Keen to come back and try other things on the menu :)
Really fresh, delicious Japanese food in Rowville. This little hidden gem offers a range of Japanese dishes with a slight fusion twist. The menu is small but offers excellent quality dishes with something for everyone. There’s a good sized drinks menu too.
Yama Yama is an izakaya-style establishment located in Rowville, dedicated first and foremost to the art of Japanese eating and drinking, offering a laid back environment for catching up with friends and family.
Accompanying the range of sake, beers, cocktails and wine is a smorgasbord of Japanese eats.
A really well styled interior with wall murals greeted us on entry into Yama Yama on Friday night to try out the menu. This casual Japanese restaurant injects some amazing flavour into their dishes and their menu is small enough to fit on one page but large enough for a great amount of variety.
We started with the Veggie gyoza. These veggie parcels where piping hot and had plenty of flavour, lovely and crunchy on the outside, soft and delicious on the inside.
The Sashimi plate was served pretty as a picture and was so fresh and vibrant. I found the slices perhaps a little too thick but that would bet only criticism. The wasabi was potent and cleared my sinuses.
The Beef takiyaki was an absolute flavour bomb, the dressing had a real punchy zing, each mouthful was kept fresh and made you want to go back for more. The beef was tender and nicely marinated and I just wanted to drink the left over dressing from the bottom of the bowl.
The Yama fried chicken, had a lovely crunchy coating and a sweet dressing which brought the Japanese flavour twist.
We tried both the crab and beef sliders. The Soft sell crab slider was absolutely scrumptious, the slight after burn from the chili mayo was very pleasing to the taste buds and cleverly didn’t detract from the crab flavour whilst I was consuming, it was lovely to have the crab shine and the crunch was spot on. The beef slider was also super tasty and had generous amounts of beef.
The chefs special, was a generous serve of panko crumbed prawn with inside out rice. It was fresh and tasty, I loved the crunch of the prawn the smokeless of the mayo and the stickiness of the rice, a real lovely combination. The side dollop of spicy mayo on the plate brought a lovely little bite to the dish and being on the side means I could add as much or as little as I wanted.
I had the sake based fruit liqueurs tasting paddle. A perfect idea for those wanting to give sake a go.
We really enjoyed our time at Yama Yama and were thankful for being invited to try out the menu.
We headed in to Yama Yama the other night for Japanese, having never been to this side of town it was a surprise to see such a little gem . Upon entry we were greeted by the lovely staff and also a nice artwork of Mount Fuji and a geisha. The lighting inside was very dim but set the mood nicely
We were advised that the menu was recommended for sharing and they also included some large dishes if individuals wished to have their own meal too . We decided to go for the sharing option and chose the gyoza, Japanese pancake, octopus balls, sashimi, beef tataki and also the ice cream trio for dessert
The gyoza was nice and juicy, the outside wrapper was thin and crunchy which is a tick when one is to order a gyoza. The Japanese pancake was presented on a stick which I found very different, this tasted really good and we were tempted to order another one. The sashimi was fresh however we found it was a tad too thick, presentation wise it looked beautiful . The beef tataki was presented in a salad form which we liked, the beef was sliced thin and married well with the flavours of the salad. Finishing off the dinner with a trio of ice cream was a good choice, we got the pear and ricotta, chocolate and a citrusy flavoured one.
Thanks for having us !
We regularly get takeaway from here. The bento box is consistently great, with fresh salad and crispy tempura vegetables. The Japanese chicken curry is also a favourite with a generous amount of sauce. Service is always polite and efficient.
I tried the Chicken curry from the lunch menu. It's a generous serving of crumbed fried chicken with a few potatoes and carrots thrown in alongside a big serve of delicious and fluffy rice. The curry sauce is almost gravy like, not overly flavoursome.. but still nice. Overall it was a high quality meal for $15.
They do have a different menu for after 5pm so Ill be coming back to try that.
Service was attentive and friendly, nice fit out and very clean.
We were invited to Yama Yama and were pleasantly surprised upon entry. There was a cool mural of a geisha on the back wall and the wall towards the kitchen was graced by Mt Fuji. These trendy interiors coupled with a gorgeous mirror were matched by a modern ceiling installation of chairs as light fixtures. Pretty cool stuff.
We got stuck into sharing food izakaya style and enjoyed the miso eggplant and okonomiyaki. Miso eggplant is one of my favourite dishes in Japanese cuisine and we thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m also a big fan of Japanese pancakes. This one was presented on a skewer which looked fabulous and tasted great but meant the size was smaller then I’m used to (although the menu did mention skewer so it’s very clear what you’ll get).
The chefs nigiri plate was wonderfully vibrant and a beautifully presented colourful selection of fresh fish. I liked the addition of a beef tataki one on here too. There was no soy sauce on the table which I thought was a bit odd but perhaps it’s trying to get away from the more casual style Japanese food.
We finished off with the salmon curry and chicken teriyaki. The teriyaki was my favourite as I’m a big fan of sweet sauces and teriyaki is right up there with my most preferred ever. There was a good mix of veg in here too all covered in that delicious sauce. The salmon curry I’m a bit on the fence on. Katsu curry is typically accompanied by chicken or beef and I think pairing it with salmon potentially overpowers the delicate flavour of the fish. I still found it enjoyable on a cold night though and was overall very impressed
Food is flavourful
( Very Not Salty, FYI )
To be Izakaya (Informal Japanese Pub) I wouldn't categories Yama Yama as one...
What was expected, unexpected.
Izakaya Skewers on Charcoal
(Chicken skin, chicken butt, ox tongue .... Just saying )
But please try their Chef Special Inside Our roll and other Nigiri / Share Platter .
Their wasabi is really good, it compliment the Nigiri & Sashimi .
Sweet potatoes chip with aioli sauce, is also really nice; it appears not cut by machines, very even size and fried to the right crispiness and not dried inside at all.
Udon, Sweet potato chip, wasabi.
TRY IT~~ haha yummo
What a great little hidden gem! No need to venture into Glen Waverley for a quick Japanese fix. The service here was also attentive and efficient - will happily come back.
SERVICE: 4/5
We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves so had the choice to sit anywhere. Lounge seating infront of the window next to the gorgeous geisha wall art it was. Service was very attentive and prompt throughout. The young gentleman in charge of front-of-house was especially pleasant. He was attentive without imposing.
FOOD: 4/5
Surprisingly better than expected. Nestled amongst Wellington Village, I expected the food to be basic in look and taste. Every dish we had was fresh, flavoursome and well presented. Some of the dishes were a tad pricier for what you get but after devouring every dish, I'd happily pay it all over again.
Takoyaki:
The firm favourite! A light crunch on the outside leads to a tasty octopus mixture in the middle. It was not drowning in sauce or bonito flakes which was a nice change. Brought me right back to ones I had at the at a food night market in central Tokyo..delish! Needed more though.
Okonomiyaki:
Very unexpected for it to be presented on a lollipop skewer rather than the traditional pancake. The batter was not too heavy and the vege mix was the perfect texture. Enjoyed every bite.
Vegetable Gyoza:
Tasty and not dry. The light crisp from the pan was perfect, mixture was still moist and the crisps placed on top added a nice texture.
Sashimi plate:
Husband ate most of this and said sashimi was well presented and fresh.
AMBIENCE/DECOR: 3.5/5
Great use of space with ample seating. Neat layout, furniture and table setting with the emphasis around two key art pieces - the geisha wall art and the lit Mt Fuji piece towards the back wall. A comfortable space to enjoy an intimate meal.
KID FRIENDLY: Yes - avoid busy periods as space is quite limited. More suitable for older children.
Absolutely loved the food! A little bit more on the pricey side because were used to going to Glen waverley. But would definitely go back ☺️
Crispy eggplant
Kingfish
Tatiki
Pulled pork taco-ok this isn’t typically Japanese.m,
Pork Gyoza
These are the dishes we had and they were all really nice. The service could have been a bit more attentive, but the food more than made up for it. My two favourites were the eggplant and the pulled pork taco.
Ordered some simple hand rolls here to take away. Flavour was good and hand rolls were fresh. Ordered the crispy chicken, prawn tempura and tuna hand roll. Came here on a weekend afternoon, when it was pretty quiet.
Surprisingly delicious!! We did not expect it walking in especially it being located at Wellington Village. The atmosphere is a little confusing but everything we ordered (gyoza, sweet potato wedges, Yama fried chicken, Udon, pulled pork tacos, crispy eggplant) was all amazing. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back.
Just tried Yama Yama for the first time tonight. I ordered the classic Yama bento box and it was delicious! Only disappointment was that I was given a sachet of powdered instant miso soup to make at home, instead of the real thing- takes away from the whole restaurant experience but nevertheless I'm happy I found a nice Japanese place in the local area. Will be back to try other things on the menu.
Great to have a good local Japanese spot. Tried it for the first time and they did not disapoint! Decor was cool with murals painted on the walls and soft lighting. Staff are friendly and service was great. Started off with a Sake Mojito to drink followed by Vege Gyoza, Beef Tataki, Fried Eggplant (best dish of the night), Miso, Beef sliders, Sashimi amd the Salmon Curry to share. All of it was good! Only slightly negative thing I could say was that the Slamon was just a little over cooked bit still nice. Bill came to just under $120 all up and we left full and happy! Looking forward to coming back and trying more!
Amazing food, especially the Yama Fried Chicken and the Sushi Share Platter, which contains Nigiri, Inside Out Rolls, Sashimi, the Chef's Inside Out Roll of the Day and a host of other sides; great value for money.
Service is really good and the waiters are nice, but not overbearing.
Fantastic local eatery. Service was great, with a warm, relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Would highly recommend the kingfish sashimi and beef tataki. We will definitely be back.
went here recently and my boyfriend and I were really blown away by the quality of the dishes and the presentation. the staff were really nice and humble as well. we would definitely come back. although the serving sizes are pretty small and would definitely have to spend over 100$ to get full for two people.
yama yama offers a unique rage of food different from anywhere else in the area! the atmosphere was amazing and the staff were extremely attentive 😍🍣
Great range of options, love the shared small dish style of the menu; bringing the dinner party together. An interesting and exciting selection of japanese alcohol, with small tasting palates i'd recommend! Adore the shoplift, a medium sized restaurant that feels very comfortable. The staff were attentive and knowledgable. Will definitely go again!
What a great find! We went for dinner and it was a great night. Between the three of us we had most of the small (but generous) starters with the outside in rolls and kingfish ceviche clear favourites. The crab sliders were also a great choice. The staff were very attentive and it's a really warm and relaxed dining environment. Great prices too. And our vegan dining partner was well catered for, which is sometimes a challenge. I'd definitely recommend and visit again.
Great food, great atmosphere. Mixture of smaller plates and full sizes plates, plenty of options for vegan and Gluten Free. Well worth a visit was enjoyed by all
This is a new place opened in the last week in Rowville and it definitely provides a different option to what's in the area. The food is excellent!! The beef tataki is absolutely sensational as was the salmon curry. It's more a tapas style food so just order a few and share, you won't be disappointed. The service is also very good and welcoming. Looking forward to going back.
Love the new Japanese restaurant. Interior design is fantastic, service is great ( they talk Japanese) and the food is outstanding. We will be back often.
