Review Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant - Ryde

Had yum cha here on the 20/02/2021 and ordered a selection of dishes. The food here overall is good but not the most greatest when you compare with other yum cha places and you order items from a menu instead of picking from a moving cart. This is good as the food is made to order so you won't get any food that's cold or sitting out too long. They also offer member discounts on the bill if you are a member of RELC. This place also takes card but surcharges apply.

This restaurant is a bit hit and miss. Some stuff is good, and some not so good. Overall the experience and food is good. The crab was pretty average, which is a shame considering it should be the superstar dish. The crab was not that meaty, and the E-noodles underneath just didn't impress me. The Pippies on the other hand were excellent, on a crisp bed of fried rice noodles. The fish disappointed a bit, wasn't that special. The seafood used in the egg white dish was very good. Overall it balances out to 3 stars... The yum cha is good, they do the pre-ordering on a sheet rather than the trolley system, which results in fresher food. However the service is really slow (or they were horrendously understaffed the day we visited). Had to go and get my own cutlery and chair (additional person), own water, and the waiters barely had time to collect our order sheet. The food came out quite promptly though and was quite good, but the service was abrupt to the point of being rude

I’d actually give 3.5 stars if that’s an option. Visited the Golden Hawk after the covid lockdown was eased. It’s located inside the Eastwood Leagues Club (1 level up), non-members can enter the club for free, as long as you bring a photo ID. By 11am (door opens at 11am) it was already full house. Come early as the place is popular with families & groups. Food wise: decent taste, generous portion & reasonable price compared to other yum cha places we’ve been to. For 6 dishes, no drinks, we paid $50.80. Service staff seem overworked and tired even though it was still quite early. It’s the kind of place where you just order, eat & go.

Good value Chinese restaurant style food, had the 6 person crab banquet for $222 (member price). Banquet comes with XO scallop, crab, steam fish, choice of 3 dishes from a massive list of Chinese favourites. Also included are the usual steam rice, one green veg, soup, fruits & soupy dessert.

Good Chinese restaurant. it's good for large groups and kids. The only thing I didn't like was the fried ice cream but everything else was good.

A good restaurant for Yum Cha. Well-spaced seating, not noisy, unlike other Chinese restaurants. My favorite - century egg and salted lean pork congee contains very generous ingredients. All wide selection of Yum Char items are freshly steamed or baked (after you make your order), MSG-free and tasty. The dumplings are refined and expertly made. As a member of RELC, I enjoy 20% discount on Tuesday to Friday (Closed on Mondays) and 10% on Saturday and Sunday. Also top marks for dinners. Been there for Chinese New Year banquet and thoroughly the seafood dishes.

Not a pleasant experience! Firstly, orders are placed with no chance for second round orders. If you want to add more dishes then you're tough out of luck. Secondly, at start of service, menu items were "sold out"? Thirdly, staff were incredibly rude and not interested in helping out at all. Food was 7/10 but because of the above I can't bring myself to give them anymore than a 2/5 stars.

Food took over an hour even after following up multiple times...turns out they lost our order. One dish didn’t even show up. Overall everything was very salty and just very average. Only positive was that the beers were cheap.

Waited for entrees for over 30 minutes, mains came out slowly 45 minutes and one dish didn't come, waiter not friendly or receptive to our requests. This was lunch on a Thursday and restaurant was not busy. Food ok but nothing to rave about. There were 13 of us eating and we won't be back

Entrees took forever to come. One main didn't come and only later realised a second hadn't come (which we paid for). Have been there before - when service was excellent but not yesterday. Everything seemed to be an effort. Had to insist of having mix of fried and steamed entrees - waiter initially said we could only have one or the other. Luckily the company was great so had a good time. It was not realkt busy so don't understand poor service.

I've been a fan of this place for yum cha since 2009. That all ended on 12:30pm, 20th February 2016. My partner and I walked inside, noticed a lot of empty tables and was told to wait 5 minutes anyway. I thought "No problem" so outside I go to wait. This also happened to another couple next to us. 5 minutes later, the host comes out and invites the other couple to a table. Eagerly, we also anticipated the same treatment. NOPE! The old server says "Can you guys wait an hour instead?" ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? "Why!" my girlfriend asks in Canto. "Oh, I'd rather serve 4 people other than 2." "But the restaurant is half-empty! We won't take long. We've been here before!" "I don't want to serve you. I'm waiting for 4 people to come along." "Fuck you..." - my girlfriend simply says as we walk away, never to return. I envision that this place will close or be under new management within a year or so. I don't give a shit, I'm not going back.

I dined at the Golden Hawk with Andrew of Addison's Advisory Group, an old friend of my late father Tam's just to catch up and talk a bit of property and finance. First order for me is always vegetable, scallop and prawn dumplings. Then a plate of Chinese Broccoli. Andrew had to order the pork ribs, very tasty. A few calories once a day is fine I said. The service was very professional, and since I'm an Australian Born Chinese, luckily the head waiter and manageress both speak good English and they are really genuine, dedicated people. Looked after us. The interior is classy, quiet and surprisingly a feeling of being in Hong Kong or China, given we were in local West Ryde. Atmosphere was warm, the other customers dressed and quiet. I will do all of my business and family lunches and dinners here since it's affordable and true Chinese food. Kerry Dock Strathfield

A middle age waitress with glasses always wearing dangling earrings is very rude. She’s always asking for tips and if you don’t give she will give you a very bad attitude.

Good YC place if you're local and a member of the Leagues Club.
Most of the food is steamed/cooked to order so its fresh, probably due to the turn over.

Only thing to note is that its really dim in there, so it gave me a headache. Not the best place to go to if youre hard of sight.

We love going to this restaurant as the food is fantastic. But unfortunately if you are not Chinese you get treated second best. It happens ever time we go. Tables next to us who have come in after us get food first. Finally tonight I asked why my food is taking so long. Answer I got was because I ordered an entree. Probably won’t go again or maybe I will if I can get my eyes reshaped.

good chinese food with reasonable prices, too, especially if member of the ryde RSL. have tried the yam cha too, not bad at all. ambiance really cozy and it’s good it’s located inside the RSL so there’s enough parking.

3.5/5

The boyfriend and I came here because i was craving yum cha. I knew this place is cheaper but i didn't remember how the quality is. We ordered a few Dim sums and most of them is good. The bean curd roll and beef tripe is delicious. The chinese sausage roll is very fluffy and flavourful. All the other dim sum is average, but at least they were steamy hot.
The worst one is the floury roll, it's very small and looked a bit shrunk. The pudding is pathetic looking as well.
It worked out to be okay price-wise, but we were full.

It's located inside the Ryde-Eastwood leagues club. This was our first time to the restaurant and club. We were here at midday on a Saturday for their yumcha. Yumcha options were limited and you have to place your order on a piece of paper (rather than the usual yumcha experience of ordering from roaming carts). Although the options were limited, we found what we ordered to all taste quite nice. There were also a few main options for ordering - cantonese style rice and noodle dishes. We ordered 2 rice dishes and quite enjoyed the pork rib and chicken feet on rice.

Came here for a family dinner for the mid autum celebration
Staff are attentive and the waitress even gave us extra prawn crackers
We ordered 8 dishes which included the roast duck special, the meals are consistent and came out fast.
We top the evening off with fried ice cream for the kids, of course the adults couldn’t resist a bite
Not the best I have eaten and definitely not the worst
A family restaurant for locals who have been coming here for the last 20-30 yrs
All in all a nice dinner
As we are new members to the club, we decided to try the yum cha one weekend and weren't quite sure what to expect. Service was quite good and efficient and the restaurant had a nice ambience. You order the dishes off a menu, and they are brought out to you. The selection was not huge but you could definitely find the popular items. The portions were huge and each dumpling dish had 4 instead of 3 at most other chinese restaurants. Flavour-wise it was quite good. It wasn't the most delicate or refined yum cha but definitely does the job and is considered good value for the portions you get. It would be better if you go with more people to try more dishes.

Leagues club members get 20% off if you show them your membership card when you pay. We spent $20pp including tea and had too much to eat.

Yum Cha was disappointing in comparison to the many other places we have had it. Most dishes were far less flavoursome.
Instead of choosing dishes from the trolleys, you select from a menu and then multiple dishes arrive at the same time. Service was good until we complained after we realised they brought a duplicate of one of our orders, and were still waiting for another dish. The manager told us it was our fault for not immediately noticing and because we had eaten 1 of the 4 pieces we had to keep it! After our objection to his aggressive manner he took that dish away, but the correct dish never arrived. Very poor attitude from the restaurant owner.

This is a place that I always go to with my parents, and still go after probably a decade now since it's relatively close? We generally eat there for yumcha on sunday lunches or at dinner times for special occasions like birthdays/CNY/etc. To be honest, I never order the dishes, since I leave that to my parents who are more knowledge with their Chinese food.

However, after so many years, I feel I have generally had an above average experience with this restaurant. Always ask for their specials during the yumcha. I remember generally spending no more than $8pp for yumcha which is incredibly cheap.

All in all, a very cheap place (especially if ur an RSL member - I recall my parents getting 15% discount) for some decent Chinese food. Photos taken were from a recent dinner I had.

BBQ chicken feet were off the chain, son! Enjoyed a lazy Sunday seating at Yum Cha, it's not the best Yum Cha going around but it holds its own that's for sure.

My mother-in-law told me that the place is gradually going down hill (this would make sense considering all the empty tables around lunch time).

I envision that this place will close or be under new management within a year or so. I really don't give a shit, I'm not going back anyway.
Golden Hawk Chinese seems to be quite busy when I came to visit on a Saturday night. I was not sure what to expect for a restaurant within the leagues club. I vaguely remember coming here years ago for yum cha and it was very mediocre. . However someone had mentioned to me that they had a really good experience here so I thought I'd give this restaurant another try. The decore is out dated but still has some suburban charm.

One of the best dim sum places in Sydney. It's fresh, it's tasty and it's just like it used to be. This is the traditional yum cha, albeit without the carts.
MissPiggyEats
The best thing about this place for me is that you order your Yum Cha off a menu so it always arrives hot and fresh – something that doesn’t always happen in many of the places with Yum Cha trolley ladies (and lads). We also love that we don’t have to wai
