It was my step daughter's birthday during ISO. I sent through an online order and mentioned it was Veronica's birthday. I had no expectation that they would offer an additional meal, I merely mentioned that Japanese was Veronica's favorite and that she was excited to eat Y14 for dinner. They were absolutely beautiful and provided us with an additional dish, with the words Happy Birthday scribed in Ebi Mayonnaise. Such a lovely touch! To add to this review, the food was impeccably presented and the flavours were phenomenal. Thank you for making my stepdaughters birthday as special as it could be.
The best Japanese in Bayside! So yummy and such a lovely atmosphere. So happy we found this place!
This is my new fave go to for Japanese and doesn’t disappoint. I tend to lean towards the poke sushi which is delicious and you can’t go past the chilli chicken dumplings either. Just writing about them makes me want more!!
Delicate and Delicious!
Came here with my partner for a nice dinner. We ordered a selection of small and large plates. The beef tataki was so good! Very delicate and beautiful flavours!
All the food was amazing except for the tempura whiting. It was ok, but it was the last meal of the evening and after beautiful, fresh and light dishes before it, it felt a little fried, oily and heavy
Overall, wonderful staff, great decor and beautiful food.
Thanks for dinner :)
Great place to dine with delicious Japanese cuisine. Place is relaxed and staff was attentive. Sashimi was fresh and we enjoyed watching the sushi chef’s skilful preparation in the open kitchen.
A great addition to the Sandringham precinct. We have been a few times now and were impressed with the food, staff and ambiance. We opted for the set menu on both occasions. It’s Omakasi style where you are given the chefs choose. Each time the food was different. The sashimi is great quality as are the other dishes. While the restaurant is quite small the food is big in authentic taste. The chef is very skilled and obviously has been trained in the art of Japanese food preparation. We will be back
Sashimi was fresh! Enjoyed the fried chicken as well as the whiting and nori chips, even though we expected it to be seaweed chips. The teriyaki chicken was ok. Place was cozy with a great atmosphere. Great staff. Big shout out to Brendan who was lovely and very attentive!
We scored an outside table on a warm night in Sandringham. The place was super busy and had a good relaxed feel about it. The four of us read the menu and ordered our drinks and food. We sipped on rose and kombucha. The food arrived as it was cooked so we weren’t all eating at the same time. The food was delicious. Presentation was on point and service was efficient. Meals were reasonably priced and very high quality! My favourite was the tempura whiting with nori chips.
Went for nice dinner and u must book since it gotten busier.. food tasted good and satisfied but they put too much on endame as well as the fried chicken.. we had to shake off the salt to eat them.. so tell them less salt
Delicious and fresh seafood, hard to find on bayside!
Look forward to eating here again, my favourite were the chilli scallops and salmon sashimi!
What a nice day to go to the beach and have fresh sushi afterwards 😋 I had Crispy Prawn and Kimchi sushi roll, as well as Teriyaki Kingfish Donburi. Loved both. Service was attentive and polite. Keep it up! :)
This is some of the best Japanese food I've ever eaten. Started with a gorgeous syrah and some miso eggplant. The poke sushi was insanely good, so many textures! Highly recommend that dish. It was a special but they were talking of making it a regular item. The crab roll was so good as well, my first time eating crab and I loved it!

Nice cosy restaurant with very friendly staff. We had 2 starters (agedashi tofu and eggplant miso) and a mixed sashimi main. All the dishes we had were brilliant so fresh and full of flavour. With 2 glasses of wine our meal came to $70. Good value for money, we'll definitely visit again.
First time eating here this evening and I’ll be back! Really lovely fresh sushi and sashimi platter, sake and even though I didn’t have room, I’m glad I tried the salmon ramen. Really great staff, will be back!
A beautiful ambience. Cozy like a Japanese living room. The oven-baked chilli scallops are moreish. Great service. Personal and friendly. The kitchen bar\counter is my pick over a table. Watching the sushi chef work enhanced the dining experience.
Located right near the water, this place has the perfect location! All the food was presented nicely and most of the food was yummy. A couple of the dishes we felt weren't as fresh as we might had hoped. The wait staff were nice and the inside of this restaurant is warm and cosy. If you like Japanese, give it a go.
Great place for after work dinner, pro cooking, friendly staff, and beautiful view by the beach. 😋😋😋
At last we decided to have dinner @ Y14, since moved into the locale. Located near the beach, nice vibe and reasonable spacious seating inside/outside.
Very friendly and attentive staff, got us a table and menu straight away. Menu is limited but good signature dishes available. We weren’t lucky enough to try their sashimi (sold out), however, the grilled miso salmon w/ rice & tempura fish w/ sweet potato chips was good. We will certainly will try the sushi ‘n’ sashimi in next visit.
Beautiful atmosphere and lovely staff. The food is so fresh and clean tasting you leave feeling healthier than when you came in. Recommend the sake with the open salmon sushi and finishing with the plum wine. Small but well sourced wine menu. Recommend this place for an intimate evening as it is cosy enough to hear your conversation but enough atmosphere to not be joining the table next to you. My new local ❤️
Always friendly staff who are happy to help you. Limited menu but what is there is definitely worth it. A small and cosy atmosphere gem in bayside
We rolled in for a mid-week lunch and the place was full. We found a seat out front under the heater and settled in for our first visit to Y14. Staff were very friendly and attentive and we promptly had menus in front of us and orders taken.
A great range of options for all with plenty of great Japanese staples you would expect to find.
We opted for the miso soup, gyoza, spanner crab sushi and the tempura fish w sweet potato chips. Everything was delicious and was delivered to our table with the perfect timing. Miso soup was a great start and the texture of the gyoza went perfectly with the dipping sauce.
Sushi was crunchy and with a bit of wasabi and ginger, it hit the spot. We also loved the lightly battered tempura fish!
Overall a great spot for a bite and we will be back to try out the rest of what the menu has to offer.
Superb Japanese restaurant in Sandy - easily our go-to restaurant in the area. A fantastic place for an intimate evening out or a dependable takeaway. A real gem.
Well konnichiwa Y14 and welcome to Sandringham. Since they arrived on the scene, this place has been an absolute hit with the locals. The Head Chef and owner Tatsuya (from Japan) is the master and he's created a solid menu. If chicken's your thing, order the YFC (Yamazaki Fried Chicken), the panko crumbed chicken curry or the chicken chilli dumplings. Otherwise the seafood is freshly prepared and made to order, so when I'm pressed for time I always call in and takeaway the crispy prawn, salmon and tuna sushi for me & my family. And when we do get the opportunity to go in for a meal we order the sushi and sashimi platter (worth every cent) and the grilled tassie salmon. The staff are friendly, efficient and have a great knowledge of the menu too. We're local and regulars now, so we'll be back for sure.
Absolutely LOVE Y14!! We came with a large group and the staff were extremely accomodating working out a table to fit us all in. Between everyone we tasted almost everything on the menu and it was all incredible. We could definitely taste the authentic Japanese flavours the owner/head chef brings to the restaurant. And we were lucky enough to meet the owner, Tats, what an absolute legend!! His passion for Japanese cooking really shows on all of the dishes he's created. The food came out very promptly and the service was spot on.
Ill can't wait to go back!!
Ended up at Y14 by chance last night - first time there after our friends had given us a rave. They were spot on. My wife and I felt like we had to chime in via Zomato about the taste and atmosphere at this groovy little place. It's like inner city Melbourne has finally arrived in Sandringham - actually, strike that, Tokyo has come bayside. I had the curry chicken: creamy and warm and perfect on a night when the air had a chilly bite to it. We shared the sashimi, which was as well cut as any fish I've seen and eaten - including the Tokyo fish markets. Best of luck to the great staff and head chef there. We'll certainly be spreading the word.
Great food and service at this kitchen and bar. Agedashi Tofu is one of the best I've tried. We drive all the way from Footscray for the bayside splendour of Y14!
This little beauty is certainly worth a visit! From the moment you walk in you can feel the warmth and hospitality from the chef and staff. The ambience of this place is great with such attention to detail in the design. Four of us dined there for dinner on the weekend and we tasted almost everything on the menu – hard to pick an absolute favourite but I would certainly order the sashimi and chicken when you go. Thank you for having us! We’ll be back
Sometimes when you walk into a restaurant you immediately get the feeling it’s going to be a good experience and at Y14 it certainly was! Our visit today wasn’t planned however, we will definitely return to enjoy more than a snack next time. Such a friendly vibe surrounds the very smart looking restaurant and the prawn dish was amazing. See you again soon!
Loved it! We went in as a group of four so got to try lots of items off the menu and it was all absolutely delicious. Love the fit out too, the place has a great feel. We'll be back!
We have been here a few times now and really enjoy the atmosphere, the service and of course the food. Lovely to see a good citchy place open up in Sandringham. We'll keep coming back
I love this place found it earlier this year, best Japanese in Melbourne. Food is delicious presentation is amazing. Everything is so fresh LOVE IT!
Very happy to see this little place open up in Sandringham. It is small, very nicely fitted out and brings a bit of inner city feel to local bayside. The crew here have done a great job making the small area work. Special mention for the chairs they have selected, very comfortable and stylish, a rarity in the restaurant world. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was 3 quarters full. There is bar seating or table seating and the restaurant is well staffed, service is fast and the waiters are friendly and efficient. The menu is shortish but has a good selection. The wine list is also compact but the drinks seemed well priced. The food here is mostly designed to share, small to medium size plates with a few pieces on each. We had the fried chicken, the sushi sashimi plate, the gyoza and a pumpkin salad. I would rate the food above the usual suburban japanese level. The gyoza in particular were a standout, the sushi plate had a few items on it that were a bit differe... read more
Had a great Friday night dinner with friends. Food was beautifully prepared. Very well staffed and attentive service. We asked them to select a range of dishes for us, and it was well sized and priced.
I went last night with my partner for the first time and we really enjoy the food. Sashimi was really fresh and cut properly. The scallops were cooked to the perfection and really tasty. The waiters were really nice and professional. We will definitely come back and suggest to people in the area.
See you soon.
Service, food and atmosphere is great! The scallops were very well cooked and delicious. The salmon sashimi is fresh! All the small dishes are delicious. We will definitely be back.

We had the fried chicken, the sushi sashimi plate, the gyoza and a pumpkin salad. I would rate the food above the usual suburban japanese level. The gyoza in particular were a standout, the sushi plate had a few items on it that were a bit different to the standard Japanese fare.A couple of things i think they could address. The salad came straight out of a very cold fridge, first bite all you could taste was cold. Needed to be left to come up to room temperature. I suspect it was stored in the same fridge as the beer. The sushi/sashimi plate at $48 is light on for food. There are a couple of items on it that probably push the price up - oysters, soft shell crab. That is OK but I think they need an alternate platter with more traditional make up as well for those people that are hungry. Otherwise I think this place will become a regular for us. Well worth it.
We've been here twice and I love this place. First off, I'll mention the service, which is great. Everyone smiles, from the wait staff to the kitchen staff.
The food is yum - it's a small menu and they're doing it well. On both occasions we've opted to have several smaller dishes to share and they've all been delicious.
My only suggestion is that they update their wine list to include prices by the bottle for wine, not just the glass. But that seems like a minor quibble.
I really hope this place does well - it feels a bit more funky and sophisticated than most of the Sandringham eateries and the service and food is great.
I was lucky enough to head into Yamasaki in its opening days ... how blessed Sandringham is to have this little eatery in its hood. Great food , fresh and very tasty ... I think the best "real" sushi I've had since my travels in Japan earlier in the year. I will be heading back ... with friends in tow !
Really impressed with the quality of the food and overall service / atmosphere. The restaurant is small but very friendly, warm and intimate . Sushi was delicious! I'm loving the wrap your own seaweed which I was told is the proper way to eat a sushi roll and ensures freshness and crunch - yum! I ordered the grilled salmon bento box along with chicken curry for takeaway the other night- delicious !! Really impressed . The staff are friendly and service great . Highly recommend .
We ate on a Sunday evening, the chef / owner made the sushi to order - best I've had since last time in Japan. Our table was outside which works well on a mild evening. Will certainly eat here again.
Finally got a chance to check this place out and it was well worth the wait! Friendly staff who had excellent knowledge of the menu & some great recommendations. Cosy but great atmosphere. Highly recommend the kingfish and slow cooked lamb! Unlike previous reviews we thought portion size to price was spot on. We will definitely be back!
So excited Tatsuya Yamazaki has opened up Bayside! Having been to both of his other restaurants numerous times I was keen to eat his food again. Yamazaki's is meant to be more casual than his previous ventures and this suits us because now we can go more often with the kids and also get his food to take home on the way home from work! I ordered the agedashi tofu which is always to die for, the YFC, the chilli chicken dumplings (do yourself a favour and order a serve the next chance you get!), and the salmon donburi which was fresh and perfect. Tatsuya's skill with fresh seafood is impressive and respectful. We're planning to work our way through the menu, both in the restaurant (beautiful warm ambience, created lovingly by thoughtful people) and at home!
Hey guys so we had bonnet tonight and yes great news for Sandringham as they on the money. We had the salmon sashimi to start and it was so fresh and succulent a beautiful pieces of salmon. Then my wife had the crumbed chicken chicken curry don again very lovely. I had the Tasmanian salmon don top marks. Then we had the chocolate cigar with green tea ice-cream was A great way to finish it off. As you walk in the front door I can feel the ambience and generosity from the staff and that they are there to serve and help you. I would recommend you try these guys . We already are looking forward to our next visit
My wife and I have now been to this fantastic Japanese Kitchen and Bar 4 times in their first 3 weeks of opening and have not been disappointed. Like all new ventures, they had a few small teething problems in the first week or so. But the food is to die for. We intend to eat our way through the menu in the next few weeks. This is high-end Japanese cooking in a wonderful setting. The owners have done a fantastic job in decorating. As summer approaches - it will be fantastic sitting outside watching the world go by while indulging in some mouth-watering Sushi. My suggestion for Summer? - go and get a Bento Box - or better still - Japanese Fish and Chips and head down to the beach and enjoy a sunset. Your stomach will love you forever. PS - also try the chiili Chicken Dumplings ...YUM!!!!
My wife and I were keen to try the new Japanese restaurant in Sandrinham recently opened by owner/chef Tatsuya (Tats) as we had experienced his wonderful food at his previous restaurants in Port Melb. and
St. Kilda. Tats has not lost his culinary touch, we had fresh oysters to start, with condiments, my wife had the Grilled Tas. salmon and I had the slow cooked lamb, the food was "to die for" It was fresh, superbly cooked and well presented. While waiting a short time for a time we had a drink at the bar that serves Asahi beer, my wife had a white wine. The staff were friendly and Tats came to our table to ensure that all was well with food and drink, and it was. While we were there we noticed two AFL football captains dining with partners , apparently they are regulars and have also followed Tats from his previous Japanese restaurants.
We had an excellent meal in pleasant surroundings at a reasonable cost. We will return soon to Yamazaki with our friends to work our way through the menu..
Came in for a later dinner on a Thursday night, staff were friendly food was delicious, the Mornington Sauvignon Blanc was really smooth.
This is not a cheap Asian eat and the serving sizes are not huge but I feel the food quality reflects the price, the menu is smaller (whilst still boasting plenty of choice) as a new restaurant I commend them in having the smarts to do a few things very well then a lot at a average grade.
We will definitely be back !!!!
We will be back
Sandringham's newest modern Japanese eatery is nothing short of special. Each dish a fresh modern take on the traditional cuisine. Yamazaki is a cosy petite restaurant with a varied menu with something to suit all, from the fresh housemade sushi & sashimi to the mixed seafood platter for 2. We also tried the gyoza, the house special YFC (Yamazaki fried chicken ) the chicken curry & slow cooked lamb . Great wine list & of course Saki. But you definitely need to loosen your belt to fit in the delicious chocolate cigar served with homemade green tea ice cream . It's only been open two weeks and we've been twice! Jo & Aaron
I have followed Tats (chef) from his restaurants in Port Melbourne to St Kilda, and waited keenly for the new kitchen/bar to open. I was not disappointed. Food was fab, as I remembered. Delicious gyoza , fresh and succulent sushi (very Hokkaido), staff welcoming. I live in Tokyo and will be adding Yamazaki's to my list of go-to restaurants when I return to Melb.
Wow! So excited to have such amazing, fresh, authentic Japanese food in Sandy. My partner and I called in for dinner Thursday night. Great buzzy atmosphere. Staff were really friendly and our meals were out quick, but we didn't feel rushed.
We shared a some dishes; Gyoza, veggie pancake and a few sushi plates. Everything was beautifully presented really and tasty, but the sushi was beyond good - it was awesome!
We'll be back! 😍
