Review Sushi Daily - Sandringham

Inna Kersman
Our favourite local sushi place! We’ve been coming here for almost three years at least once a week. Love the curry and katsu don too.

Staff were very rude and unpleasent to deal with. They kept me waiting over half an hour for take away. I saw several people order and leave before me and only when I asked where my order was, did they start cooking. After waiting even longer I asked for a refund and the young man who works there was began yelling at me and was very arrogant. I have been here a handful of times and the service has ALWAYS been slow. Not to mention the price hikes - not worth coming here. Tip for staff: regardless whether a customer is right or wrong you could have easily and calmly diffused the situation instead of screaming at a customer infront of other customers - what a horrible way to treat people. Even a fake apology would have gone a long way. I will never return and I will never recommend this place to anyone.

Good quality food, but like many establishments stating to increase prices and reduce portions. Little things like not including wasabi and ginger with sushi this eatery is slowly going backwards. How hard is it to include wasabi with sushi.? ?

The best grilled salmon nigri box around! A bit pricey but totally worth it!

Great sushi. Always a queue at lunchtime which is a good sign
The Honest Food Reviewer
Food: The sushi is great and the bento boxes are even better. A delicious array of flavours. I would like to see a larger range of sushi rolls as my previous visits have seen very limited options. Service: I have been here on numerous occasions and the service has been a bit of a let-down. The staff were impolite and unpleasant to deal with. When I asked questions or had reasonable requests, answers were always abrupt and unhelpful. This is the reason I haven't returned. Appeal: A nice little shop in a handy location. Summary: Food = 8/10 Service = 5/10 Appeal = 7/10

Amazing sushi. Great range of healthy drinks

Edit: They have since added a veg main and a veg sushi roll, so I’ve improved the rating. Thanks guys! The food is good, but they have a horrible selection for vegetarians. Only 1 veg sushi roll on offer, and when we got a sushi platter and asked for it to be mostly vegetarian (and payed something like 10% extra) it came out almost all seafood. Only posting a negative review in the hope that I can amend it some day soon. Meat free diets are becoming more popular and you can only benefit from reflecting that change in your selection.

Ordered a katsu curry, was given an O-Don when I arrived and was told that's what I ordered. Won't be back, terrible customer service.

My favourite ever Japanese take away restaurant! The most delicious food at reasonable prices.

What happened?! 😠 Ever since management changed hands, quality, hygiene and service - or lack thereof - has dropped to an all time abysmal low. This was last Friday evening around 6pm. The man that served me was blasting music on his headphones, not taking even the slightest care of me emphasizing that I am gluten intolerant. When my food was ready I could see it lying there for a good 20 minutes while all staff appeared preoccupied with their mobile phones. When my food was finally brought out it was lukewarm to cold. Took one bite and decided to leave.

The crispy chicken hand roll is a winner<br/><br/> As a nearby resident, I've visited Sushi Daily more than a total of 100 times over the past few years. Suffice to say, whilst not much of a "blogger", I felt it obligatory to write this review.<br/><br/>Sushi Daily is a well-established secret among the locals, and members of said club unite on a common desire: to continue enjoying honest, simple and tasty Japanese inspired fare served at affordable prices. For those who didn’t get the memo, please leave the pretentious act at the door. Sushi Daily is an all embracing estate, welcoming the au naturale, carnivores, vegetarians, lactose, gluten intolerants, and alike. This is a very casual space yet I've also noticed celebrities step in - but I'm not here to spill those beans. First bite into the crispy chicken sushi hand roll, it instantly won me over, a no brainer. As for the more "boujie" dishes, I needed a pre briefing to cultivate the sensations of the East that I'd yet be made familiar with (growing up on one meat three veg didn't exactly help). Anyway, it didn't take long to cultivate my senses after talking to and getting to know the creators, understanding the story behind the flavour profiles and the immersions of such - and more importantly,  being open to the expansion and depth of "umaminess" on the palate. That's when it all made sense.<br/><br/>I'd like to echo the statements of the reviewers before me - I agree, yes - they do great sushi. There are indeed a collection of original flavours, but my favourite still goes to the classic crispy chicken. If the cravings are strong (as they can be at times) - call in, order in advance as they’re popular, and as I've learned the hard way - they do sell out. Hot hearty donburi and bento boxes are also on the menu and they offer multiple flavours to choose from - absolutely love having an array of available options and a variety to choose from. For me, what has always been a delightful treat is the katsu chicken deluxe bento box. Highly reccommended. The katsu chicken is a lightly crumbed and deep fried chicken (in this instance, white meat) drizzled with tonkatsu sauce, served on a generous bed of plump white short grain rice, complimented with pickled yellow radish, house made pickled cucumbers, lightly salted edamame, gyoza and fresh Tasmanian sourced atlantic salmon nigiri. They serve this with daily housemade miso kelp soup. Well proportioned.<br/><br/>Disclaimer: this is not a mainstream faux hipster by product of an increasingly monopolized f&b market. And thank goodness for that.

Unfortunately this is one unhappy customer...<br/><br/>I very rarely give low reviews but here goes...<br/><br/>Came here for a quick late lunch and decided to dine in.<br/>I ordered the 1 sushi roll and the “deluxe bento box”. The server didn’t know what that was and had to walk out from behind the counter to see the menu... then he went on to ask we what flavour???? 🤷‍♂️<br/><br/>Anyway, I was served the sushi first it it was the highlight of the lunch...<br/><br/>The miso soup was Second and well, it was fine, but the bowl was filthy. I’m just hoping all the white stuff on the outside of the bowl was sloshed our miso. <br/><br/>and the bento was next...<br/><br/>Firstly, if it comes with “edamame” I would have thought it came with more than 2 beans, but nope, only 2. <br/><br/>Secondly, the shrivelled up slices of lifeless cucumber were mouldy. Ew... please, any chef/cook could have seen that those cucumbers were not fit for consumption. <br/><br/>And thirdly, my rice was really cold, not just luke warm, but cold.<br/><br/>Oh, and fourthly... “pumpkim” is spelled “pumpkin”<br/><br/>I have this 2 because the sushi roll was decent. <br/><br/>Sorry for the negative review, but someone had to say something.

Honestly the most top quality sushi you can find in Australia... I am a strong sushi enthusiast and have been to more than 150 sushi restaurants in my years... Would DEFINITELY suggest visiting and grabbing a bowl of ramen, some seaweed inari, a couple salmon avocado handrolls and a nice bottle of “Hibiscus Kiss Remedy Kombucha”. What an absolute treat. PS This place replaced and old Japanese restaurnt and it has been the best change to happen to Sandy Shops ever... Deserves 5 starts hands down.

This is my favourite local Japanese haunt. The sushi is always fresh and the Bento box is excellent and value for money. I’ve tried the prawn tempura bento and katsu chicken and they are the best in bayside. The miso is well seasoned and full bodied, the tofu is light and fluffy, and the seafood or chicken are a delight. There is a reason why there are queues out the door at lunchtime. Can’t wait til they reopen after the holiday period on January 15th. Please note Sushi Daily accepts cash only.

Sunny day nearby Sandringham station, popped into Sushi Daily for a late lunch. Had the Premium tempura bento box with salmon nigiri, Tempura prawn, spring roll, gyoza, edamame beans, agedashi tofu, miso soup and rice. Generous serving. All very fresh and flavoursome except for the tofu, which was a bit average. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Modern beach side cafe feel, certainly an unexpected gem.

great customer service! Everything is always fresh and tasty! Favorite sushi shop in bayside a must for everyone in the area! Don't forget about the dine in option either! awesome bento boxes
Who Loves Good Food
Just a regular sushi joint, ordinary. Sushi 🍣 was average. The tats chicken rice was just 6 small pieces of fried chicken on plain rice with mayo, no sauce, no veg, nothing! Pork belly rice was slightly better, with some coriander on top. The pork belly ramen had a weird tasting soup, didn't taste Japanese at all??? Salmon bento 🍱 was ok.

Being positioned almost directly opposite Sandringham station, this sushi joint is a great option for when you're on the go. The sushi is always fresh, and the tofu rice paper rolls are delicious! The bento boxes are nice when you have time to sit down and enjoy them, as are the harumaki. I'm always impressed by the standard of food delivered here, and will continue coming back!

Freshest and best tasting rice paper rolls that I've eaten in a long time. Gyoza were also delicious. The staff were friendly and although they were very busy we didn't feel rushed to order. Highly recommend!

My partner and I, lived in Sandy for 8yrs and we would eat here regularly, we have since moved away but find ourselves eating here even more regularly regardless of the drive! <br/>Naturally it irritates me that some of the reviews here are so negative.. I mean ..why?? It's a small place, takeaway focused.. Yet they produce quality food on par with most Japanese restaurants (if not better!).. What's with the cost factor? Price hike? When we started eating here around 2006 a handroll was $2.40. In 2016 the same roll is $3.00. It was "hiked" up 60c... Don't some people understand economics? Clearly they use premium ingredients that attract queues out the door.. Over the span of a decade they obviously respected their loyal customers and maintained a high level of quality and adjusted prices accordingly. I've seen avocados fluctuate between $1 and $5 in a span of a month (and I know for fact they use avocado in 90% of their rolls and has always been a generous wedge) <br/>The sushi is the best I've had in any takeaway outlet! They do alot of flavours that other places don't do, and even the flavours that they have in common with other places just taste so much better here! And that's their point of difference! <br/>There's a vast amount of replicated sushi bars out there that really undervalue the importance of quality ingredients! This place definitely isn't one of those! If you're not happy with the "hiked" prices, you probably should stick to the foodcourts for sushi (they may even have buy 2 get 1 free deals happening) <br/>The cafe a few stores down bakes and sells petite chocolate cupcakes for like $5 and they taste devine! Pay for quality and everyone's HAPPY!

Seriously OVER the TERRIBLE service in this place. It's such a shame as they do have good quality sushi. <br/>I've been going here for over a year but I am done with the poor service. <br/>In the last 6 months I have seen their prices hiked up, waiting times increase dramatically, the brown rice sushi rolls run out by midday EVERYDAY (solution... make more when you know you run out everyday)??? And The brown rice rolls they sell aren't actually brown rice. They are a mixture of white rice and brown, and when asked, their response was because brown rice doesn't stick together? Well I'm sorry, but that is rubbish. There are MANY places that do ALL brown rice rolls that stick together just fine. Such a shame to see a quality product be flushed down the toilet by what can only be described as incompetent business people. That may seem harsh, but I am so frustrated at businesses that continuously ignore the basics of running a good business. It's simple common sense.

We came for takeaway and the service was helpful in deciding what to order. Unfortunately their food was not as positive. We got a bento box each and there was nothing authentically Japanese about it. Definitely wasn't fresh and everything was doused in soy sauce making it too salty.

Why cash only in this day and age! Good sushi but very inconvenient to go the atm and get cash just for this place. Don't mind paying car surcharges but at least have that option

I frequently drop by this little establishment for the fresh salmon sashimi. Definitely the freshest sushi and sashimi I've had around the Sth east burbs. Easily the best source of essential omega 3 FA. ✌🏻win win✌🏻️

High quality sushi and ramen. The line at lunch time says it all. Always busy but always worth the wait. Sushi is always fresh and authentic. Quality ramen. I do enjoy a ramen. <br/><br/>Gyoza are delicious as well. Bento boxes are exceptional. I am a worker in the area and I am slowly working my way through the menu while watching the girth of my stomach increase. Good times. Good feed<br/><br/><br/>Treat yo self
Ihoward
A local favourite for me. They make the best sushi in the area, it always fresh and never dry. They have the option of brown rice sushi as well! They've hiked up the prices in the past year which is annoying as I hate paying more $2.50 for a small sushi roll. As soon as I eat it though I immediately forget about how much I paid. FYI its cash only

22 August 2016<br/><br/>Still serving it up fresh and tasty with new menu items that've popped up since my last review. Tried the new tofu rice paper rolls. If you love the combination of coriander and mint with tofu, it's a winner. Also noticing new sashimi specials with a range of fresh fish (blue fin tuna and kingfish?) which is on the to-order list. They aren't a ramen shop so I'm pretty surprised they do a pretty mean spicy beef ramen too. I've noticed their ramen usually takes a bit longer to prepare in comparison to their other standard hot fare. Not an issue when I call up for pre-orders and worth the extra 5 min wait compared to the drive up to the CBD. Still offering the best value around town.<br/><br/>-----------<br/>This little gem has been around for almost 10 years and is a well kept secret among the locals. Winding cues during lunchtime peak hours and sensibly so, with fresh nori rolls and simple yet satisfying hot dishes being frantically packed and served to the hungry masses. This is my go-to place for across the board comfort Asian/Japanese take out. Having tried dozens of similar contemporary takes - Sushi Daily remains an irreplaceable staple.

I have been coming to Sushi Daily Sandringham for years now. This is my go to sushi joint, and I now no longer can get sushi from anywhere else. I'm not sure if they have new owners but the new Reno is great. I just hope they don't get too distracted on the superficial things & keep their focus producing good quality sushi.
Foodforlife
This place has the potential to be so good! The man serving wouldn't stop coughing into his hands and then going behind the curtain to make sushi with the same gloves on? And as I took a bite into my Avocado & cucumber sushi all the wrapping came apart and it fell everywhere! :(

Consistently great Japanese at an awesome price. I'm a big fan of Japanese food, and was really happy to stumble on this place when I moved to Melbourne. Consistently good quality sashimi, sushi and hot dishes. Tats chicken is awesome and often cooked perfectly (I've never really had it over-cooked here, always still moist inside and dine regularly here - so was surprised by one of the below reviews that had dry tats). Sushi rolls are awesome value and always beautiful. Their salmon is fresh and well cut. The option of brown rice in most dishes is a great touch. Staff are friendly and like the simple but sharp design of the place. Quality place for a good feed and that's why I keep coming back.

Used to be delicious.. I am very disappointed in Sushi Daily. <br/>I started patronising their sushi shop in Sandringham about 4 years ago. Since then the price has increased and the quality has reduced. It used to be a sure thing to get great crispy chicken and delicious other flavours, however after sludge-like rice, soggy batter and almost frozen salmon (and of course the promise of another price rise by the sign on the counter) I will not be back for a while.

Great Sushi. I'm not normally the biggest fan of sushi, but this place is AMAZING.

Good food and prices. Worth a visit even if you aren't local. Very good food, nice staff, quick service, good prices. Bento box is generous and good value. Note that payment is cash only (there are ATMs nearby).<br/><br/>Most of what they sell is probably takeaway but there are some tables to sit at which aren't bad and it's quite pleasant to eat there as well.

Best Japanese in south east melb. Best that I have come across in south east suburbs and best out of many places in Melbourne by far!
Miss
Best Japanese restaurant in Melbourne in terms of value for money and quality. I always get the chicken bento box and it hits the spot every time! The new ramen options are amazing also!! The shop is so well presented and clean whilst the staff are always genuinely nice and helpful. I can't rave enough about this place. Just love it!!

Fresh fresh fresh!. Fresh indgrediants, the miso is to die for. They can be a little inflexible with bento box dish combos. The tats chicken is delicious. Freshest sushi this side of the bay. The restaurant had a make over earlier this year and everything is looking very clean and professional.
Frau Tuck
Fried Chicken Disappointing. It's good to see outlets attempting their version of the big chain dishes, at least I'm assuming that's what they intend with the Tats Rice with "chicken bites". However, it was almost inedible. The chicken was in parts overcooked and stringy and other parts undercooked. The batter was soft and oily. I considered taking it back but was too pressed for time. I agree with the other reviewer comments about the bento box and sushi... it has always been very good quality. But I don't recommend this dish. Also, the place is starting to look a bit run down and needs a clean. I hope they can regain their earlier high standard.

Fresh sushi. Lovely fresh and well priced with lots of variety.<br/>You have to get there early at lunchtime as they disappear quickly because they are so popular.

Delicious. Great takeaway, fresh, reasonably priced, good selection. Fantastic gyozas, bento boxes good variety and value. Friendly service. Glad we have discovered this little gem of a place - will definitely be visiting regularly.

Everything is consistently fresh, cheap & great quality. Thoroughly recommend the tofu & any of the bento boxes.

Fantastic. Yeah, have to back up everyone here. Really good Sushi and a few surprise dishes. The takeaway platters are the best value in Melbourne.

Nice sushi. Fresh sushi, nice! Kindly service!

Great service. Yes the food is fantastic here, the service is second to none. They are very innovative as well as informative about what's on their menu. In the heart of Sandy, this shop is undoubtedly the best sushi in the area.
