Ammos was a beautiful restaurant. We had the set menu option and my goodness, everything was delicious. Mouthwatering meat and super yummy dips. Everything was perfect!
The staff were also wonderful. Super helpful and friendly and made me feel at home.
Will definitely be back!!
Great new restaurant in Sandringham. The food is traditional Greek, the restaurant fit out is clean and warm, the service is sharp.
The husband and wife team here have been running restaurants for 30 years and it really shows. They know what customers want, they know their strengths and they stick to them. The food is really good, the pickled sardines were the best I have had anywhere in the world in the last 5 years including the home of the sardine Portugal.
The servings are really generous and it is easy to over order but everything here is good and make sure you leave room for the desserts, the greek donuts are sensational.
Great addition to Sandringham.
First time at Ammos on a Friday night. It was very busy but we had a booking so we got our table within minutes!
Service was attentive and although we loved the care initially in the end I think it could be a bit much otherwise patrons may feel that staff are hovering too much. In saying that it was the only half negative comment!
The food was delicious and the 6 of us decided to opt for the Zeus banquet which was plenty. Delicious fresh dips with bread and Saganaki. The meat and salad followed and that was again quite plentiful. Unfortunately I don’t eat beef so this was my fault I should have asked for more chicken perhaps. The chicken and lamb were juicy and delicious. Loved the fact that we got dessert and coffee and all this food for$50 each.
With this wet and cold weather I keep craving those yummy chicken skewers! I shall be back!
I think I have found my new favourite greek restaurant! Absolutely delighted as Ammos reminds me of my favourite restaurant that got shut down a year ago...so happy to have had this recommended to us!
The menu is extensive with traditional greek food. we had the saganaki, it was on the cold side but still delicious!
The feta and pepper dip was amazing! the perfect amount of spicy and a generous serving. it was severed with bread that was beautiful and reminded me of yiayas.
Next was the octopus which was incredibly soft, tender and full of flavour I couldn’t fault it.
For a main we shared the seafood saganaki, there was a generous amount of seafood and was full of flavour again reminding me of yiayas cooking.
The service was exactly what you would expect in a greek restaurant. friendly, wholesome and attentive. We felt warm and welcomed. Oh and lastly the decor was incredible! They had hellenic decor with ancient greek artefacts around the restaurant it was very impressive! I can’t wait to come back and try more of the menu!
This restaurant has been totally refurbished and the decor is really lovely. We ordered the $50 banquet and it was plentiful and delicious from the dips to the lamb and chicken platter to the dessert. My only criticism would be hovering staff. But otherwise would definitely go back there again.
When Theo’s Greek Tavern closed its doors in Sandringham Village it was very much missed. It’s successor Zanizibar did not seem right for the demographic of Sandy. Now after a couple of years a new Greek Tavern has returned to this very convenient and accessible site opposite the railway station. It’s name is Ammos and what a welcome addition to the local dining scene it is. With a freshly painted white walled fit out , Taverna style chairs and tables and a very Greek atmosphere, Ammos certainly adds Mediterranean vibe to a suburb that has a very Mediterranean feel. Consequently, as lovers of all things Med. we could not wait to try it. And we loved it. The menu is extensive with all the Greek favourites. Our order of tarama dip, huge king prawns with a rice cone, grilled snapper with lemon flavoured roast potatoes, rocket and red capsicum together with the obligatory Greek Salad could not be faulted. The servings were generous, reasonably priced and most importantly delicious. The staff were exceptional . Friendly, attentive and helpful. So welcome Ammos the return of a Greek Tavern to Sandy is a wonderful thing !
Had a fantastic experience at Ammos. Friendly staff, warm service and the food was delicious. Highly recommend the octopus - I'll definitely be back!
This was a wonderful, authentic experience. The staff went above and beyond and made us feel right at home from the moment we entered the restaurant! Just when I was craving my yiayia’s food this opened up and the meal couldn’t have been better! Definitely recommend the tarama, the meat platter to share and the galaktoboureko. Thank you for a great night - we’ll be back soon!! :)
My family really enjoyed our dining experience at this fine friendly restaurant.
The staff are attentive and friendly.
The atmosphere with the decor and plants is fantastic. The food is delicious and came out within fifteen minutes of ordering and at a great temperature too.
We were all very impressed.
Thankyou.
My family and I really enjoyed our dining experience here. The food tasted delicious and the service was prompt, friendly and great. The seafood and meat platters are superb and suited us well to enjoy the variety of food on offer. Thankyou.
The food is excellent and very authentic with friendly service in a very nice environment. We will definitely be going there again.
2 years later - still coming in for dinner and the quality is still superb.
Work over the Christmas holidays for Ammos Tavern. Super lovely people, great food, variety and portion sizes. I loved every minute of working here and the atmosphere. Being around the corner from the beach is amazing. Great co-workers and a great experience. Highly recommend this spectacular restaurant for a memorable dinner.
After hearing about Ammos from someone on the radio, I thought I'd try it for myself. I remember the location from when it was Theo's (unsure, but i think the owners of Ammos MIGHT be the same people from Theo's).
It's a nice, spacious place with two entrances (in summer). If you come in through Station street, you're not entering near the kitchen, and that's where staff will greet you. We were taken to the table right away and given menus and offered waters and given the QR codes to scan etc. The ambiance was nice; they play nice Greek music, and the entrance to the bathrooms even look like the entrance to a little house on one of the islands or something. The one thing I hated were that the chairs were hard and uncomfortable (which can become a problem if it's a lengthy dinner), but I guess this is just nitpicking.
We chose off the menu, because no one told us anything on the specials board, and when we asked about the specials, we were told about ONE dish only amongst all of the things on offer. I got the Tarama and pita bread and both were good. There was a lot of Tarama considering the small portion of pita, but it was tasty nonetheless. For mains, I got the Chicken Gyros and that was quite good too. It comes with some pita and dip (so maybe choose something different for entree) and it's meant to come with potatoes. Plural. When the meal came out, there was half a potato, cut into two. That was pitiful, and had I known, I may have ordered a side with the meal, but ... I'll know for next time. Even though that was all quite filling, I wanted to try their Drunken Pear for dessert and that was also great.
Overall ... while some things were out of whack proportionally, the food was really good. The service overall was good and some of the staff were really quite friendly. It's family operated (I believe). Parking can be a little tricky (as it's across from a train station), but we went around the block twice and then found a space.
Would I come back here again? Yes, I would. It is good for more casual meals, and good to come with either friends or big family dinners. It absolutely scratches an itch if you're craving Greek food.
Excellent food. Classic Greek food... nice meat dishes and chips.... caters for vegetarian...
Close to Sandringham station.
No Byo... best to book... nice atmosphere.. Greek cakes and sweets. Well worth a try...
The whitebait, kleftiko and Greek salad was excellent. Very generous portions - 2 mains, a starter and a salad was too much for three adults.
Great place nice atmosphere service great food really good filling fully licensed so you can't take your own wine
