My hubby and I enjoyed a candlelit dinner here last night. The atmosphere was lovely and the food absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the shared tasting plate which was huge and had everything from grilled artichokes, prosciutto to smoked almonds and the serving was generous. For mains, the steak and the salmon were cooked perfectly as were the sides. The service was friendly, Loved it and we’ll definitely be back :)
A really great menu for all times of the day along with some of the best coffee in the hills. The house and surrounding gardens are beautiful and it’s well worth taking the time to explore. Service is really good and very friendly.
What a terrific spot, real hidden gem...lovely outdoor decking to sit amongst the forest and have lunch, wonderful service, super pet friendly the waiter came out with water and a plate of special treats just for my dog! And they gave me a blanket so I wouldn't get cold either! Delicious food too.
Well worth waiting for the opening.. Great brunch on the verandah, ambiance, chatting with owners..
Beautiful gardens, highly recommend a visit..
King Henry wasn't around, as he was 40+ years ago.
Will be back....
We recently had our wedding here and I cannot recommend the food and service highly enough. The quality of food and attention to detail was superb. Thanks for helping to make our wedding perfect!
Gorgeous place for breakfast. Friendly hosts and staff, delicious food, amazing coffee and the most magical setting.
Love this place! Beautiful building and gardens, lovely staff, great coffee, yummy food, and kid friendly! We will definitely be back ;)
Beautiful place with delicious food and lovely staff. We stopped in after the guard gave us a lovely wave on our way to the falls.
Went for brunch this morning what a perfect spot beautiful scenery and the food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. Will definitely be back
Dropped in today for takeaway coffee, it was really good CBD quality the muffins were fresh out of oven mixed berries and chocolate, perfect cheer me up to get through this lockdown!
The zucchini fritters were delicious and crunchy on the outside. Salad was fresh and tasty. Service was prompt and friendly. No complaints!
Love the serenity at this place. Food is delicious especially the buttermilk fried chicken. Food takes time to come out, which makes it taste this good and fresh. So better not come when you are in a hurry.
Pretty decent food and a lovely outdoor dining area (in their garden amongst the trees of Mt Dandenong). Service was prompt and friendly. Some wasps outside marred an otherwise lovely lunch, but apparently that's a problem all over the Mountain this year.
On most days, you'll see a smiling man all decked out in medieval livery waving to passing traffic right outside King Henry Arts Cafe in Sassafras. I've spotted him several times as I whizzed past in my car - each time thinking that I must check it out. Despite the kitschiness of it being a themed cafe, King Henry Arts Cafe is a very nice spot for a meal and a wander. The cafe is set in this large property. There's a gorgeous sun-dappled deck that we sat at for our mid-morning snack. Inside, the rooms are beautifully decorated with plenty of seating.
For the food, I was impressed that the quality of the ingredients are a definite notch or two above what you'd get from some of the cafes in Mt Dandenong. Dr Marty's crumpets certainly hit the spot for us.
Went today for lunch , we drove pass by this restaurant many time and finally get a chance paid a visit today . Turns out I think came here about 10years ago . There's lovely ferntree trial that you can have a walk after the meal . The pancake was lovely . Hubby had a special hot chocolate . We were wondering what that's is , it was such a surprise and we love it very much 😁 if you wanna try something different , we recommend it 😁
On a recent trip to Melbourne, hubby and I dropped in at King Henry’s to have a bite of lunch. Who could resist the Yeoman of the Guard waving at the cars driving by? Not us. The café is in a lovely old house in the Dandenongs, sitting in a garden of greenery, with a calming water feature tinkling away. On a 41C day, it was very appealing. It was also a day with total fire ban in place so there weren’t many people about.
Hubby chose vegetable fritters while I had the pie of the day ($24) which was chicken and leek. The pie was actually a pot pie i.e. no pastry on the bottom. I do prefer my pies with a bottom, but this was very tasty anyway. The filling was a bit too dry for me, (I would have liked it a bit more saucy) and would have been fine as a real pie. The chicken was chunks of breast meat, and the pastry on top was golden and flaky. Delicious! It came with smashed peas, fries and garden greens. The chips were chunky and rustic and well-seasoned. You don’t tend to see a lot of smashed peas up our way, but these were fine, with a touch of mint.
Hub’s fritters were cauliflower with added wood smoked salmon ($26). The salmon was moist and lightly smoked; probably the best we have ever tasted. The fritters had a hint of cumin which gave it a warm, spicy flavour. Hub was very happy with these.
My cappuccino ($4) was fine if a bit weak, and the hub’s milkshake ($6) was not as good as he had expected. He insists on it being very, very cold, but this was not. And it also didn’t have enough (any?) ice cream. Service was fine; not overly friendly but adequate (tho I did have to ask about my coffee.)
We noticed that the burgers came out on wooden boards - so not our fave thing. Hopefully this is a dying trend. All up, a pleasant if not overwhelming lunch in a beautiful part of Victoria.
Such a beautiful setting for lunch or coffee. The staff are friendly and attentive. They have made it properly kid friendly with the best kids menu I've seen in the hills to date.
Well if it wasn't for the young man dressed as a beef eater out the front waving I would have kept driving however seeing the weather was lovely and we were undecided I thought why not and did a 'u' turn. So pleased we did. New owners and I must say they are doing a great job.
The outside is fantastic with established beautiful gardens with a chess set on the lawns while the inside of the house is just divine think a really classy function - maybe a wedding venue well worth a visit just for the interior.
Now the food - small menu but great quality food and not your standard 'smashed avo' etc etc breakfast standard menu thank goodness plus the lunch menu looks good as well.
Coffee excellent and my tea - YAY TEA LEAVES IN A POT, that itself is a big plus.
Couldn't fault the service or the wait staff and the owner checked to see we were ok. We had breakfast on the deck over looking beautiful gardens.
They are apparently sponsored/supplied by Roachford wines and also have a small gallery and books and candles for sale.
All very proper and inviting.
So please don't drive past like we almost did, plus there is parking unlike trying to park at Sassafras. I wish them well and we are going to return for lunch soon.
We had lunch here today we have driven past hundreds of times and finally gave it ago and we will be back. The only thing i could pick them up on was and this is really picky i like to be sitted and get given a menu and water straight away so your normt sitting there wondering what now. Food excellent, service great, price on par with other on the mountain. Clean and good atmosphere.
Very impressed will be back
The thing I loved most about this cafe was by far the property and building and atmosphere. We went on a rainy autumn day and it was so relaxing sitting by the big bay window, fireplace to our side and watching the rain fall outside with the autumn leaves. Beautiful cafe and great location. The food was good too but nothing amazing. We had the smashed pumpkin on sourdough with dukka and the charcuterie board. Both were nice, but it was really the atmosphere that made this visit remarkable.
Worth visiting and I will probably go back!
Very cute place surrounded by beautiful gardens and paths to explore the property.
Staff there a very lovely & the food is delish.
A nice place to go for tea and scones also.
I need to update this review and rating, as since I wrote a review some 12 months ago (below), King Henry's closed for a while, and then re-opened under new management (Nov 2017). The grounds remain magnificent, if not improved a little by the addition of a fountain, and the outdoor dining area is now completely shaded by large umbrellas. The menu has changed, and offers some interesting items, several of which are vegetarian or have vegan options. On this visit I had the Bubble and Squeak, which was served with piccalilli relish and roasted tomato, along with a side of sourdough. It certainly hit the spot, and was very tasty, and the coffee was well made too. New staff, but still welcoming and attentive, including the poor costumed greeter at the gate suffering from the 30+ degree temperature, and hankering for a cold beer. I would certainly recommend dropping by here for a pleasant dining experience.
(October 2016)
The gardens surrounding this cafe are magnificent, with ferneries, ambling paths and footbridges, and there is a large decking area where you can sit and enjoy the ferns while you dine. Inside the decor is plush and ornate, and of course artwork adorns the walls. I have to say, though, that the breakfast I had there was a little underwhelming, and under-cooked. There are a few vegetarian choices on the menu, which is a good start (but again, breakfast comes with eggs. Nothing for vegans per se). The coffee was reasonably good, and I found the service efficient and friendly.
We loved this place on a beautiful Melbourne Spring day! We were greeted by a friendly waitress who showed us several areas where we could eat. The rooms we saw were lovely but we decided to eat out on the balcony overlooking the pond. We ordered a club sandwich, milk shake and coffee and they all arrived promptly. The sandwich was delicious and was big enough to serve two. It came with a great side dish of chips. Good coffee and milkshake, too. The waitress was cheerful and polite and even offered us a blanket if we were too cold outside. Easy access to parking out the back and even a disabled toilet facility. We've usually tried to go to Miss Marple's but we like this place better now.
We'll be back!
Very personal service. We mainly go in the quiet times so can't comment on how it is when in peak. Consistent coffee and a breakfast menu which is inventive.
A stunningly beautiful setting, great coffee and always great food. Best to go during the week when the tourists are not around to avoid a wait.
Great dining area, excellent service and decent food. :) the chips that went with the club sandwich were super crunchy, and the sandwich itself was middling.
Treated like kings! Had the spacious luxurious dining area to ourselves (gold walls, chandeliers, comfy dining chairs) for an early morning breakfast and was served with excellent service. Food was delicious too :)
The 1st place to go if you are in this part of the town. Don't hesitate, just pop in.
Fantastic place if you are looking for somewhere: nice, clean, stylish and with classic character to relax and eat, then this is the right place for you. staffs are very kind & caring. Food is excellent and location has a vibe that will take you back.
Great place to enjoy a meal after conquering the 1000 steps walk. Really enjoy the variety of meals here as well as the serene location. Staff are very polite and super helpful.
Love this place. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and quickly seated.
We managed to get a table outside on the sunny deck overlooking the beautiful surrounding gardens. I would recommend reserving a table if wanting to dine outside as it seems the place to be on a sunny afternoon.
The coffee is the best I’ve had in the hills and served with a cute little heart shortbread. We will definitely be back.
This is a charming cafe located in the midst of a green paradise. I went here with a friend for breakfast. I had some muesli, and it was absolutely scrumptious. It was also presented beautifully, and of reasonable value for a breakfast. On a rainy day, I can imagine snuggling up inside the charming old-style building with a coffee. However, I went on a sunny Sunday, and it was absolutely glorious sitting in the sunshine among the ferns. I recommend this place (and to go for a stroll in its gardens)
Pleasantly Surprised. After reading the reviews for this place we were a little reluctant to try it but we do like to make up our own minds. After a faltering reception where noone seemed to want to know us the rest could not be faulted. Steaming hot soup with hot crunchy beautiful toast....3 pieces! Delicious coffee served quickly by friendly staff. The absolute BEST chunky chips (Shannon Bennett's Piggery should come here for lessons) served with our choice of condiment and what have to be the best scones in the whole of the Hills.....and we have tasted them all. The menu is very limited in choice but we will be back to sample breakfast and we hope the new owners are as good as the last.
DevShire Tea. After the initial confusion over whether the kitchen was closed or not (about 4pm), my table ordered Devonshire Teas all round. Our waitress was friendly enough and it didn't take long for our food to arrive. The scones were huuuge. No complaints there but the jam and cream supplied was barely enough for one. Our menu said the jam was home made. Plenty of flavour but very runny. Everyone enjoyed their hot drinks and the impromptu stop-in overall but at $15 a serve, the cafe should look at being more generous with the jam and cream.
Lucky find!. Stopped in here just because it looked quaint but it turned out to be a great find! Staff were friendly happy to explain the menu to us, including the chef who had started the same week.
Started with coffees that were divine. Melbourne isn't short of great coffee or baristas and King Henry's didn't disappoint.
Boyfriend ordered the King Henry Pie which was flavourful, and light. A side of potato purée was light and equally flavoursome.
I ordered the Rueben, a toasted sandwich of corned beef, Swiss cheese and pickled zucchini. Definitely not your average toasted sanger, it was an amazing mix and incredibly moorish. The fries I ordered as a side were thick, lightly fried and served with fabulous aioli.
'Cafe' belies what this little gem holds, fabulous food, amazing coffee in a picturesque setting hosted by delightful staff. The cafe also holds and sells antiques and local art works which made roaming the rooms a great excuse to walk off some of our indulgence.
We will definitely be back for more!
Beautiful gardens and shaded outdoor seating. A really neat new cafe with lots of outdoor seating, plenty under shade. A post-brunch stroll through their garden paths was lovely. The menu isn't particularly inspired, nor is it executed in a particularly unique way, but the food is good and the staff are very friendly. I will definitely go back.
There's a lot of good cafés up in these hills... and here's another great one! Coffee really good, focaccia was yummo and service delightful. Will definitely be back here.
Brilliant Friendly Service and Lovely Food. Really Appreciated Great Old Fashioned Service. Quinoa salad = yummo!
King-sized potential!. My bf and I have been driving past the cafe for the last few months and we couldnt wait for it to open. The King Henry is in SUCH a beautiful spot, the gardens are gorgeous and it's been done up so beautifully and interestingly, from its stunning antique furniture for sale, the colours, the art work and the fantastic decking. I'm truly hoping they stick around for a long time but I just wish they'd put as much attention to detail in the menu as they did everywhere else. It's just a bit uninspired; standard fare of burger, focaccias, sausage rolls and calamari rings, all fine but nothing special or worthy of this setting - the burger in particular was a disappointment, being a tiny beef pattie, stingy salad and no chips for a whopping $18. Coffees are great, as is the macaron selection. I'm sure that with an inspired chef, a bigger breakfast choice and the passage of time, this place will be a winning combination of art and food.
Best Cafe Hangout in Mount Dandenong!. Delicious sweets, gorgeous garden, friendly staff! My new favourite afternoon hang out in dandenong ranges!
This cafe in a charming and sunny 1902 building complete with leadlight windows, antique furniture and a cosy fireplace is the perfect place in the hills for breakfast, lunch, Devonshire Tea or a cleansing ale on the outdoor deck. Newly opened, considerable attention has gone into the grounds and venue. It has a comfortable choice of grand rooms to eat inside or a large deck with outdoor tables and umbrellas to catch the breeze and overlook a stunning fern tree garden gully. My coffee was excellent, my beef burger skilfully prepared and incredibly tasty and the staff were warm and welcoming. After lunch I took a stroll through the cafe's stunning garden loop complete with dry stone walls, tall Mountain Ash, a vast green tree fern gully and blue hydrangeas. There is a bubbling stream and a choice of little bridges to climb over. There is extensive off street car parking at the rear. This cafe now sets the pace for the Dandenong Ranges, especially if you find that the nearby and stridently modern Piggery Cafe is not your style. I can't wait to return to try the special breakfast with a glass of Moët and to explore the downstairs antique furniture shop and prints for sale.
