Review La Vela Restaurant - Scarborough

Jordan Wright
Great food with a cozy atmosphere. Only thing was service was a little slow due to them being very busy. Apart from that happy customer!
Kimberly Hogan
I have ordered from this restaurant 5x times now and it is very consistent and good , the seasonal vegetables are my favourite side, although I order through a delivery app, the potato’s are crispy and amazing! I have only tried their pastas so far, but they are well priced and worth it. Thank you for being so consistent it is very appreciated

This is such a cozy little place and the service was amazing (kudos to the wait staff). The food was a little average though (all our pasta dishes (3) were overcooked, soft and not al dente) but I had a pleasant meal. I would not run back in a hurry, but would be happy to go again.

Brilliant service. Our gorgeous waitress advised us on what to order and the meal was delicious. Garlic bread, oysters Kilpatrick, spaghetti marinara, Apple crumble..wow what a feast. San Martino prosecco.....100 dollars... brilliant value with lovely service too. We'll be back🎉🎉

La Vela came highly recommended by several locals when we first moved in to the area. We've finally got around to having lunch on a Friday and wish we'd done it sooner. To start, we had complimentery arancini balls, they were bite sized but packed a flavour punch. One entree of bruschetta between three was simple but satisfying with sweetish tomatoes and a hint of balsamic vinegar on a toast which was crispy and not too filling. Mains consisted of the Friday lunchtime specials and we each had a favourite pasta. Gnocchi Portofino was mama's go to: she loved the larger sized gnocchis which melted in ones mouth, in a devine tomato sauce and the prawns tails cut off - a must. For moi it is Fettucini in a not too rich cream sauce done Alfredo with quality ingredients. The third was the Rigatoni Arrabiata with generous additions of prawns and mussels, loved by our acclaimed home cook. Rarely do we all have dessert, however we were so impressed with the menu we ordered Tiramisu, Mama missed some liquer being in there, however, still delicious. Sticky date pudding no complaints and a White Chocolate Pannacotta I found became more flavoursome as it rose in temperature. Our server, Anna, was very knowledgeable, quite affable and professional. We too will recommend La Vela and be sure to return to taste more of the culinary delights.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food was great and very tasty and will definitely come again.

This is an amazing place. Authentic homemade Italian food. Everything we ordered was delicious! The gnocchi with duck ragout, was so tasty soft pillows of potato like I have never had before. Homemade pasta Alfredo cream sauce equally good. If I lived here I would go again for sure, traditional home cooked Italian goodness. YUM.

I celebrated my 40th birthday at La Vela recently with my family we had a table of 14 people and the food and service was amazing all my guests really enjoyed themselves. Thank you so much for making my birthday special. We will definitely be recommending you to our friends and we will definitely be back.

We have lived in Ausyralia for the past 8 years. It took us a little while to find an Italian Restuaraunt with over the top Italian Food. La Vela is that Italian Restuaraunt for us. We have eaten many meals here through the years. Anytime we have guests from overseas, we bring them here for a meal. Important events also get celebrated here. The food is always excellent. The staff is always polite. And, the price for everything is reasonable. I will miss it when we move to South Korea next year. I particularly enjoy their Chickon Scaloppini. However, I always ask them to put it over pasta and take the vegetables off of the plate. They always ablige with a smile and now recognize me when I go in.

We go there often, beautiful food, ambience & staff. Not expensive either - I am not a steak eater, but last night had eye fillet, as did my partner - melt in the mouth

I had an absolutely fantastic evening tonight! Super friendly staff with a good sense of humour, amazing food (free arancini on arrival, fantastic chilli and garlic spaghetti and beautiful coffee) and lovely atmosphere. I live close by and will absolutely be back!! Thanks guys!

The best Italian I have had ever. Service was great the girls are a pleasure to deal with.I wish I lived closer to your restaurant , I will recommend to everyone.👍👍👍👍

Great cosy Italian restaurant in Scarborough. They make one of the best Gnocchi I've ever had light and fluffy and the sauce with the Prawns is Amazing. Great quality, great value unpretentious Italian food and you can even take away!

My husband and I had a wonderful experience on Saturday night for our anniversary. Such lovely staff who offer great quick service with amazing food. We will be back. Thank you!

We are on holidays and what a gem of a find is this restaurant, great food, friendly staff, best tiramisu ever.
RonSue Payne
Great little authentic Italian restaurant. Lovely food, friendly service and excellent value for money. We drive half an hour every couple of weeks for a really nice dinner out.
Mellie-Lilly Straight
3rd best eggplant parmigiana I've ever had :-) 1st being my Nonna's and 2nd my Mums :-) Kid friendly too, so that's a mega plus :-)
Chris Ockelton
Went there for the first time on Saturday night. Friendly staff, food was excellent. Great spot

Awesome friendly service and delicious food, couldn't fault anything! Had the gnocchi chorizo and the fettuccini romano. Complimentary arancini balls were a yummy start. Definitely going back.
Amanda Walker
Lovely evening again, la vela never disappoints!
Fiona Smith
Yum... absolutely yummy!!.. simple as that.. great service. We'll be back.
Sue Sanders
The service was terrible. We had to ask for our order to be taken, we had to ask for every drink and we got the bread after the entree. Eventually the main came and it was average. Disappointing
Linda Angela Yeomans
Beautiful food Lovely service
Natalie Howell
One of our fav places to eat!! Great staff great service & great food!!!
Olwyn Trimble
The food at La Vella is yummy and they give large portions. My only complaint, they close too early at 9pm and should be bigger so they can get more people in.
Suzanne White
So delicious. Something for everyone. Coloring in for the kids too!!
Adrian Sandy Millward
Always nice food and good service, never had a bad visit!

Ordered take away from here, was bloody amazing. The gnocchi portofino had nice thick creamy sauce and the mussels were delicious! Garlic bread was also great. Yum, will definitely return.
Kamado_Matty
I bloody love La Vela - they are my go to on Uber Eats - boring I always get the same creamy chicken fettuccini alfredo and well done garlic bread.

Photo playing done at home by me.

We had lunch here. It was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant and the staff were lovely. They even brought special colouring sheets & pencils to keep the little children on the next table occupied. Will definitely come back again soon.
Feed Me, Please Me!
We have visited La Vela a few times when family come over from the UK. The food is always good but after our visit last night we won’t be back. We had to wait over an hour for our food and when we questioned one of the wait staff how long we would she less than helpful and quite rude. We were offered complimentary coffees but by that time we all just wanted to get out of there. Very disappointing!
Cinnamon
Excellent. Delicious food, great staff. Really enjoyed the meal this evening. I had the gnocchi Portofino with salad. My husband had the pepper scallopini. Our parents had chicken scallopini masala and chicken Lugano. All meals were excellent. Really nice coffee too.

So lucky to have La Vela as my local Italian restaurant. Been coming here for years. Best pasta and gnocchi. Complimentary arancini during dining in is always a win. Tiramisu is also really good
David Lee
Lovely restaurant with fantastic staff . I had the tortellini and it was great, a little oily but nice. My wife had the seafood marinara and came hot and delicious . We didn't wait long for the food and the table service was great. Will be back 😃

Awesome friendly service and delicious food, couldn't fault anything! Had the gnocchi chorizo and the fettuccini romano. Complimentary arancini balls were a yummy start. Definitely going back.

Excellent food. Delicious every time. Professional staff and great service. Really nice place to dine with small or large group. This place has always been good.

Great Local independant Italian!!!
I have only been here once and really enjoyed the food and service - its italian with a twist for example their is egg in the Lasange (but its awesome) We were offered free aranchini balls on arrival which was a nice touch and they were tasty!!! Its a BYO so you can have a nice inexpensive night out while supporting your local community.

One odd thing I forgot to mention is the frozen Veges you get with the fish - rather odd I would rather have salad or nothing.

We had La Vela on Saturday night (Take out) This has been a local of ours for years and a often go to. I always say this place serves excellent "old school" Italian. I ordered potato gnocchi with prawns in a tomato cream sauce, as a friend of mine had highly recommended it. It was amazing, the gnocchi it self was so soft with the sauce having great flavour. There was a good ratio of prawns to gnocchi (a big serving for $19) my husband ordered the lasagna which he liked, not much cheese sauce (again a more traditional lasagna dish. We also ordered the mini arrancni balls which were delightful, coated in parmesan cheese.. so yeah it was a bit of a carb feast, so I guess diet starts today!

We went here for my brothers 16th, as it is local and fairly well priced.

One highlight is always the complimentary arincini- crisp, cheesy and hot, they're always nice to have.
For entree, we got the sourdough, which is usually 4 pieces but the waitress kindly slipped on 2 more for our 6 person family. Soft and fresh, it was nice, but nothing special. For main, I had the special- beef schnitzel with sweet potato juice and mushroom sauce (though I swapped the mushroom for tomato). The schnitzel was thin and the sweet potato tasty, but they could've been crispier. For dessert, I ordered tiramisu - the Marscapone was tasty, but I have had better.

Overall, tasty, good value, but not as authentically Italian as some other places. Good if you're searching for a family meal
Marina Antich
Awesome food and great value for money
Love the eggplant parmigiana it's awesome !
Great service and very efficient
10 out of 10
Love this place

One of the worst meals out I've ever had. We ordered a seafood platter to share as entree ... the oysters Kirkpatrick were so overcooked they had almost melted away. I couldn't tell you what the other fish were because they were deep fried and tasteless. I had steak for main ... It tasted textureless and bland and was accompanied by frozen vegetables. My friends had pasta dishes .. none of them were impressed and reckon the pasta was not freshly made. The place had the atmosphere of a school dining room .. lights were too bright ... No music .. No candles on tables. The staff brought the food ... and that was all. Totally disappointed. The meal was overpriced and frankly bad. We won't be back.
John Finkelde
This restaurant has a well deserved reputation for generous serves, tasty dishes and all round goodness I've had take away from La Vela a number of times but this year I had my first sit down meal. The service was attentive and friendly. I'll be back!
C.m.stoddart
Amazing meal. Love how i can mix it up. Got an allergy and theyre super accommodating! Usually order the chicke prawn dish with no prawns and they add extra mushrooms. Fricken love it.
Wealls
The food was very nice. The only disappointment was we ordered a main chilli mussels as a entree to share with 4, it didn't come with any bread. This is ridiculous as everyone knows the best part of the mussels is the sauce which you soak up with bread. The sauce was so nice we ending up ordering 3 'serves of bread' @ $7 per serve for 3/4 slices. Sorry $21 on bread is a but over the top!
We love La Vela and find ourselves returning every 6 to 8 weeks. The food is very wholesome, serving sizes generous and service quick and friendly. The parmigiana is my personal favourite, along with the gnocchi gambero. Great for families and casual date nights. Thanks La Vela!
Being vegetarian its not easy to find a filling nice vege food.. But fettuccine Romano was an absolute delight at La vella restaurant. It was tangy super yummy and fulfilling. The only negative is the dishes are quite pricey. Over all a 3.5 must visit if u crave for good home made authentic italian dishes
Kavi
I found la vela to be one of the best for their food and service!! We went there on Friday night for dinner and no way we could have accommodated for dine in without booking so its a must. As they are extremely busy so you can expect a bit of delay like 30 min for mains. But wait staff was carrying smiles at all times and looked after us well. Kitchen was continuously serving diners and takeaway smoothly for busy rush. The food was really delicious even though i found it a little pricey but all in all it was a good experience. I will definitely put them on my favourite list.

Pretty average meal at pretty extraordinary prices, live just around the corner so thought we'd try it out, girlfriends veal Marsala tasted overcooked and sauce wasn't that great. My carbonara had WAY to much pepper and I'm not a fan of pepper pasta was okay but every mouthful was just loaded with pepper. Even though we had a 25% off voucher from the entertainment book we still felt very underwhelmed by the food here, though the complimentary arancini balls were good.
Izzy Alyce
It was pretty bad food by my standard, my veal definitely wasn't worth $30. It was tough and tasted flour-y, left a bad taste in my mouth and I cooked better veal myself a few nights before. Definitely over priced and not the best service - wasn't asked how the food was or anything. Much rather Bella Rosa Cafe in Carlisle or Capri in Fremantle for authentic Italian home cooking. Boyfriends pasta tasted weird and store brought.
Breakfast Fanatic
Lovely restaurant That's tucked away- wouldn't of found this gem of it wasn't for the ratings on here!
The restaurant was fully packed, but it wasn't more than 10 minutes before they had us sitting and enjoying our drinks.
The complimentary arancini balls were a fantastic touch to the friendly staff, warm and romantic atmosphere and quick service!
The food was fantastic, and the portions generous! A spectacular Italian addition to Perth- will be back again!
J-in-Perth
I'd not been here for quite a long time but was meeting some friends & we decided to give it a go. It was ok. And that's about all I'd say. Not wow. Not terrible. Just ok.
With the voucher from the a Entertainment book & BYO it seemed quite reasonable priced.

-___________________________________

I went again to La Vela last night & it was really excellent. Service was really good & the food was lovely. Very impressed :-)
Jamie_hadland
TASTLESS MAINS. Very dissapointed.. Both our mains were absolutely rubbish. No flavour. When we went to pay the lady didnt seem to care and went on to say "please select your account." Poor customer service and $92 wasted. Not recommended.
Julietsimonis
Wouldn't recommend. Mains were tasteless. Have had much better. $91 not well spent :- ( disappointed .

I love it!. Lucky for me, I live around the corner. I have never had a bad meal at La Vela. I am writing this review part way through my meal because I am 100% certain the rest of the meal will be wonderful.

The arachini is sublime. Never, ever disappoints. The spaghetti aglio e olio is another favourite. And the gnocchi is fantastic. Fresh, home made. Utterly delicious.

And the food isn't the only thing that is fantastic. The service is the most professional and efficient I've had in this town. Every wait person knows the specials, refreshes empty water bottles, and has obviously had hospitality training.

Bravo all round!
Le Grand Chef
It doesn't matter which day of the week you go to this family friendly resaurant, it is always busy.

The staff are very helpful and the food is delicous with generous serves.

Save your money and go elsewhere.. It looked inviting, but once we were in there memories came flooding back of an unhappy visit previously. Rather than leave we decided to give the place another chance. It was a few years since our last visit, things have to change. Wrong. For a suburban restaurant the prices were over the top, perhaps the food had got better. No not the case. A comprehensive menu, but lackluster offerings. A comprehensive wine list with many quality local wines and a BYO option was the only positive thing we found with this restaurant. The staff were very young and inexperienced and this showed through many times. When leaving we had a massive argument with the girl about splitting the bill to three credit cards. This lasted many minutes and she only relented when other people began queuing to pay. All in all a very unpleasant experience. This is a place we would not recommend.
Russell
Really disappointing. Took my wife there for Valentines Day dinner.
I wa hoping for a romantic Italian restaurant, what did we get? No candles, no music (when I asked about music I was told they had stopped paying for the Music License, and the speakers are too loud...no volume control??), and no atmosphere. Food was ok, but not a lot of flavour, and the paper napkins gave the place a far cheaper feel than the prices on the menu. Would have liked to try a dessert to see if it got any better, but 20 minutes after our mains were cleared, no offer of a dessert menu...time to leave. Sad, I'd hoped for something special

Wonderful. We had 3 entrées and a main. I wanted to eat desertdesert
Nic
Have eaten here many times, food is always amazing and service is great!
DJ
Good, no fuss Italian. Went here with family for a casual meal. Staff were friendly and efficient from the start and continued that throughout the meal. The tasting plate entree was generous and tasty and the mains were the same. Everything was tasty and I look forward to trying more of their pastas to see how authentic they all are. Would recommend and return.
StarQ
Amazing & authentic Italian food! So good & recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality meal

Consistently Great Value. We have been coming to La Vela for over ten years. The service and food are always consistently great. Portion sized are amazing. They have the best tasting platter to share with lots of variety. It is large so be careful ordering if you want to eat all your mains! But well worth trying to do both. (Though they will package up a doggy bag for the next day if you ask....have done this several times.) Meals are fresh and tasty. Chicken and Steak Laguna are awesome. Garlic prawns great. Pasta dishes always a delight. Great value, great prices and wonderful food.

A favourite!. I've been here 3 times and can't wait to go back. Each time the service has been friendly and efficient, food has been delicious (ordered meat and seafood dishes and arancini...yumm!), portion sizes are generous and prices are very reasonable. I'm hungry just thinking about the last meal I had :)
Leona
Always good food and service. Nice homemade Italian food. My favourite is Grilled Lamb Rump on a salad of feta, tomato, cucumber, red onion with black olive tapenade.
Pamp
Very disapointing. My partner and I went there last Friday night.
The service and hospitality was really good. We ordered fresh oysters for entree and it was really good however, the main were a total let down.
My partner had the Gnocchi portofino: the sauce was mild and yummy but gnocchi texture not her liking: very soft..Overall still a good dish.
The biggest disapointment was for me. Rigatoni arrabiata: the sauce had a taste of burnt garlic and sickening after a few mouthful. The sausage was overcooked, texture like beef jerky. The pasta, not al dente, reminded me the barilla I sometimes use at home. I later found out that only Gnocchi were homemade.
I swaped dishes with my partner a few times as I wasn't enjoying it at all.
I don't know if I will give it a second chance yet but one thing is certain, I won't choose pasta again !
Stevenreed
Great!. Amazing little spot.

Beautiful food served by the most attentive and friendly staff I've experienced in a while.
I will be back. Regularly.

Loved it!. Recently moved to Scarborough and immediately tried out a few of the restaurants nearby. The wife loves Italian food so we had to try La Vela. I got the Lasagne and I can honestly say it was the best Lasagne I have ever had. The wife ordered Gnocchi and she too loved it. The meal sizes were large and I left feeling very full and content. The service was great and the atmosphere cozy. I have already recommended La Vela to several of my friends! Awesome Restaurant!

Regular client. Disappointing attitude. We have patronised La Vella on dozens of occasions with our family and friends. Tonight we experienced a trifecta of below par service then a surprising response from a senior person at the till. 1. The normal aroncini balls did not arrive. Then the drinks we ordered for the kids did not arrive. Then it took 10 minutes once we realised the drinks were not coming just to get someone's attentions. Then another 6-7 minutes later that waitress came back and said she could not identify the person who took our original order. Then our meal came and every other table was getting the usual cracked pepper etc. we did not. Then at the till we were charged for 2 lots of the drinks which they previously claimed had no record of. The reason for this negative message was the poor response. When I alerted them of the over charge the lady altertered the bill but was defensive and gave me excuses of staff etc. It was nineteen ninety something when I last complained at a restaurant and I left there with a bad feeling after a family meal with my wife and kids and felt "uncool" for complaining. Your response la vella was poor and below acceptable standard and for that I will most likely not return.
Food For Thought..
Great Home Style Food. La Vela is fantastic, I love the food here and the homely feel in the restaurant. I definitely recommend eating here.
Sarahledger
A bit average. Had a nice dinner here recently. the decor wasn't anything special & the staff werent particularly friendly, but the free arancini ball u always get is delicious! the food was nice, but nothing to rave out. I feel the prices r possibly more than what I wld expect to pay for somwhere like this.
Carolyn Wood
Consistently great! Generous portion sizes and just good old fashioned traditional Italian grub. The gnocchi and calamari are highlights.
Hurricane
Attentive Staff. Totally disagree with the negative reviews, My husband and I totally enjoyed our meal couldn't even finish our dinner for the size of them and my husband is a big eater and he couldn't finish his for a change .
The cost of the night was very reasonable will defiantly come again and bring other
Bridget
Have always had delicious food here and great service and not much of a wait for food. It could use a makeover and the back room lacks atmosphere however we continue to return for the food and prices, big servings and extensive menu. Need to book as we were turned away on first visit as walk ins however they offered us a menu for takeaway which I appreciated and encouraged me to return.
Jessica Whitham
Been coming to La Vela for a long time. It never fails to impress. Consistently delivers amazing Italian food with good service. Meal sizes are generous & everything we have tried on the menu is delicious.
Scarb
So annoyed - ordered crumbed squid and got squid that was so salty that it was horrible. When I complained they were so dismissive and just said I should have told them sooner. This used to be our local take away but after that treatment will be giving our business to Tony's and telling all our local friends to give it a miss. They must get lots of complaints if they take no notice of them!!!!!
Pixie62
Give it a miss. Granted we were a late booking....but honestly I wished we had gone somewhere else.
We were shown through the restaurant and into what can only be described as a " lean to " at the back of the restaurant. Un appealing, without character and any kind of ambiance nestled between the kitchen and the toilets
The food for each person came out at different times and the special one do us ordered, wasn't ......special that is, nor was the service,or the overall experience
There are too many restaurants in Perth to spend time in a restaurant that provided this underwhelming dining experience
Jonnie Bee
Good Italian. La Vela is an unpretentious, relatively plain, often busy Italian restaurant close to Scarborough Beach. Quick meals, with generous portion sizes and a BYO option.
Fantastic arancini balls with delicious tomato sauce. The gnocchi alfredo was to die for!! and the Tiramisu possibly the best in town! Grazie!
Dinnertime
Great eye fillet. Pricey, but yummy as. Cooked to perfection. Such a pity about the boring sides served with it. Horrible side salad. I don't know why restaurants find it so difficult to make an appetizing side salad. It's the easiest thing in the world!!!
Eat-love-laugh
Have been coming here weekly for nearly two years now. Although the serving sizes aren't as large as they use to be, the quality of the food has remained excellent. The gnocchi is hands down the best I have EVER had! The atmosphere in the main room is great! Cosy! The staff are always pleasant! Complimentary Arancini too. Wow.
Lee Phillips
Solid Takeaway Option. The restaurant decor is pretty bland so we choose to only get takeaway from here. It is a solid takeaway option though, the best Italian in the area.
Moose Loose Aboot This Hoose
Nice food, especially the steak. Only bad points were that we asked for our garlic bread with our mains - they brought it out as a starter. Also, asked for onion in my partners pasta - no onion was visible! Service could be better, but overall a good restaurant.
Michelle Leo
Bit slow on the service, pretty noisy - was a Friday night though, grilled lamb salad overpriced for what you get, barramundi was AMAZING! Will definitely be back
Moopal
Found this place on our recent holiday to WA.. service was great and food was delicious. Accomodating to our menu changes. Gnocchi marinara was delicious, my chilli spag was a bit bland but all in all a good experience.
Adam D
We have a winner! Best restaurant in Scarborough. Garlic bread best I've had. Chicken was amazing. Came here for first time and will return for sure. Service was great cant understand what all the whinging is about
Phil Dunkley
After talking about going there all day and saying to each other what are you going to get, we get there order spaghetti marinara. First mussel in , almost dry reached , it was so mushy and tasted like it belonged in the toilet.being so hungry still ate the spaghetti then told the staff . The lady pretty much said too bad as you ate the rest of the meal . Lets face it , who sends it back after you've already tasted how bad it is and get another serve of the same dish . The lady in charge pretty much said they will wear it and for every disgruntled customer 12 will be lost . There were 4 of us that makes 48 lost customers according to her theory. No offer of free meal next time or desert , anything. Obviously business must be booming and they're turning customers away because we won't be back .
Eileen Broughton
Such a pity as I loved this restaurant but my experience tonight was awful the seafood in the marinara was so overcooked it was mush. Buy the time I asked every one to try it was all eaten. Because we had eaten the meal they said too bad you should of sent it back. Sorry we won't be back.
Qwert
Had a wonderful experience here. With such a large group, all our meals were delicious, the waiters were great and efficient. The gnocchi portofino was amazing!!! And free mini arachini balls when you have ordered is a bonus. Will be returning :-)
Kathryn Preston
Great food, pity about the rude service. Booked at LaVela and when I called they agreed to let us make a booking on the condition that 'you have to be out by 8'. When we arrived the first thing they said was 'you know you have to be out by 8'. when they came take our order half an hour later at 7, they again told us 'you know you have to be out by 8' at which point we were quite upset at being made to feel so unwelcome.
Our meals were all very nice, but we all left vowing never to return despite how great the food is. Was very disappointing for my birthday meal. I have no plans of returning.
Karen
Terribly Disappointing. I telephoned La Vela the day before to book a table for two on Saturday night and was told twice that we would have to be out of the restaurant by 8:00pm. I was quite surprised when I arrived at La Vela to find quite a run down frontage and when I entered it looked like the lights were off in part of the restaurant. The waitress advised me yet again that we would have to be out of the restaurant by 8:00pm which was unnecessary.

The decor was dated and the place appeared to me to be grotty and didn't smell particularly clean.

Our meals were expensive and in my experience, one of the worst tasting dinners I have ever had.

The waitstaff were disengaged and their main focus appeared to be to have us out of the restaurant as quickly as possible.

I don't usually add reviews but felt that for the price we paid, the poor, unwelcoming service we received and the low quality of food that it was imperative that others know of our experience.
Chris
Our first pick ... Amazing
BettyBite
Worst rip off dining experience. Well when my 4yr old describes a restaurant as "disgusting", it saids it all, from the stale wine opened a week prior, to the frozen lasagna (serious!), and 5 dumplings of gnocchi in a $20 entry, I thought that was the end of the disappointment but then had the waitress insist my entertainment book voucher was from last year when both the voucher and card clearly had the date through to 2014 and was from the new edition of the book. I have never felt so insulted and poorly treated by staff and obvious lack of passion for food.
Bec White
I went to this place because it had a good rating on urban spoon but was disappointed. The restaurant had no atmosphere and for Italian it wasn't cheap. The food was average- I felt I could have made the pasta I ordered with packet pasta and a jar of pasta sauce. My sister had the chicken which came with what appeared to be packet toast potatoes and over steamed veggies. Service was fast and friendly though.
Trent Lloyd
This place was fantastic, the pasta and entres both delicious. Great atmosphere, though a little warm out the back.

There is parking just past the place on the left.
Scooter
Great Arabiatta. With shared starters, mains, desert and two rounds of drinks it came to about $60 a head. Good value for the quality. I'll be back.
Foodie
This restraurant is very hit and miss.
I haven't dined here for over a year and do believe that it is moderately priced
The strangest thing about this place is that the sea food is o.k. Wheras the pasta is not too good.
Katie Stewart
Love this place, tasty, great service, pleasant staff, yummy food & food arrived quickly. I will keep going back to try more of their menu :)
Foodhound
We went a few months ago and I just had to order the gnocchi as per all the glowing reviews... and my word - they were so true! My partner's masala beef was disappointing as we're the oysters Kilpatrick, but the gnocchi with the creamy chicken, bacon and mushroom sauce would have to be up there in my top 5 dishes ever - truly superb!!!! Can't wait to go back... and they're in the Entertainment Book!!
Nico_91
Eat here often! Good traditional Italian food, Great service, reasonable prices! Small but cosy and comfortable! Recommend.

Simple and lovely. The Arancini balls on arrival are a welcome gesture. Great Arancini too.
Simple, unpretentious place, serves good food. Enjoyed the pasta dishes, though grilled chicken was average. I would recommend ordering entree size even if you are very hungry. Portions are quite big.
Rigatoni with Italina Sausage was delightful. Highly recommend it.
Lauren McGonagle
Was a bit apprehensive when arriving at restaurant due to the appearance from the street. But once we sat down and ordered it all went away. The service was brilliant (a complementary plate with delicious arancini balls were delivered to the table after ordering)
We ordered steak diane and Lugano (both eye fillet) and they were cooked to perfection! Best steak in Perth!!
Can't wait to return!
Tony Liversage
Very tasty food. Unexpected from the appearance of the place. Definitely worth visiting. Lots of choice on the menu and can do gluten free pasta

Delightful!. From the excellent service to the freshest pasta ever, we had a wonderful experience on a Sunday night. The staff, and there were plenty, were attentive and friendly. The pasta and gnocchi were obviously made in house, and were delicious. The panna cotta was smooth and freshly made. All round a delightful experience. Can't wait for the next birthday celebration dinner at the end of the month!

I made a booking for 2 and we had to wait 15-20mins for our table because the people hadnt left yet. I was not fussed because the staff were apoligetic and we received 2 complimentary arrancini balls. We ordered the italian sausage platter for 2 which was really nice. The barramundi special for mains was lovely cooked however abit expensive for the small portion of fish, only 2 small prawns and 7 small calamari rings. The gnocchi was really rich and filling. The staff was all round polite. We almost recieved a discount when the waitress forgot to include our 2 drinks on the bill however being an honest person I reminded her (being told off by my partner later). Nice restaurant but not amazing- nice for a casual night out.

Went to this restaurant last night and the service was horrible!! We were seated by "our waitress" and after 10-15 minutes we did not see her again. I got the attention of another waitress to order our meals and her response was "il just go get the waitress from you section". I work in hospitality, I understand that each staff member is allocated a portion of a venue to service, however I also know that as staff you are there to help the paying customer, whether they are 'in your section' or not. We were then made to wait another 5 mins before our waitress was even seen and when I did manage to make eye contact with her she rose her finger and said "one second" while she stood there talking with another staff member. When they finished their conversation we weren't even served by 'our waitress' so why we couldn't be help by the first one is beyond me.

I ordered the beef parmigiano. The first 4-5 cuts I made into the meal were just soggy batter. There was that much tomato sauce dumped on top that it was inedible. I was hoping the food would make up for the poor service, unfortunately it didn't.

I have been to this place multiple times in the past and really enjoyed it, this experience was enough to make me never return. Unprofessional and an overall disappointing night

Brilliant. Went with friends last week & it was awesome. Service was good. On arrival we received some complementary arancini balls. Nice touch. The gnocchi was perfect & my friends enjoyed another pasta & a steak. Would definetly recommend. Nice ambience, cosy inside, easy parking out the front!

Old school hearty italian fare. The italian sausage plate that we shared for entree was huge (enough for 4 people even though it said ideal for between 2!). The chicken scallopini was also quite delicious. Decent sized meals for the price. Would go back.

Disappointed. I was really looking forward to the dinner as I read so many good reports about this restaurant.
It started out good , we enjoyed the warm welcome, the nice cosy old fashioned fire and the tasty Arancini Rice Balls. But then my main meal arrived:I ordered Wiener Schnitzel which was 3 times thick as should and it was burned and I couldnot eat it.When I complained to the waitress, she didnt suggested to be replaced only if I want something else instead. They appologized again when we paid but still charged for it. My partner ordered Barramundi and said his meal was Ok. The service was great, the waitresses are real asset to the restaurant but I found that for the price ( we paid $105) its just not worth it.

Great food. I had the fettuccini Alfredo and it was marvelous. I would definitely come here again. The inside was nice and cozy and the service was excellent I even left a $10 tip

This was my second visit and great food once again. Love the chilli mussels even though my partner wished they were hotter but just right for me. Decor certainly needs an update and very warm in the small crowded restaurant. We requested the ceiling fans on which helped the air circulation but they didn't stay on for long. Nice staff but was difficult to get their attention last night probably as fully booked

The Best Gnocchi I've Ever Eaten. Last Saturday, my family went to La Vela in Scarborough for my Mum's birthday. My Mum really likes the place because of their fresh locally caught seafood (Mum is convinced that everything comes in a can from Vietnam these days) but I'd never tried it before. Mum knows I love a good homemade gnocchi (which can be hard to come by) and so we chose La Vela for the occasion.

To start, we had a tasting plate thing with various antipasti on it. The Italian sausage was delicious although I wasn't too keen on the eggplant but I think that was just a personal preference since the others seemed to think it was nice.

Needless to say, I ordered the gnocchi. I ordered the gnocchi portofino which comes in a cream cheese sauce. I asked the waitress if I could leave out the prawns and she told me that I could leave out anything I wanted since everything is made fresh to order. That was really handy because my partner can be a bit picky. The gnocchi was light and fluffy and kind of melted in my mouth.

The desserts were nice too and were pretty generous serves (and did I mention that the mains were super generous too? we barely had room for dessert!) I had the homemade tiramisu which was really light and fluffy. My partner had the sticky date pudding with vanilla ice-cream which he totally scoffed!!

Something that stood out about this restaurant - as opposed to some of the classier, higher-end restaurants I've been to - is that the wait staff were really friendly and full of smiles. They were super busy but really helpful and bubbly and they seemed like they actually wanted to be there.

Apart from the great food and service, I liked the unpretentious charm of the place.

In a few words - a great night out!

Hope you're hungry.. Big portions... I mean, BIG! We couldnt finish our mains. Garlic bread was SUPER buttery, but delicious. Wait staff were friendly and very apologetic when they brought me the wrong drink.
Also got given some free little fried risotto balls, cant remember their name, which were super tasty and a nice touch while you wait for your entree.
All up, good food in big quantities for a fair price.

Very good food including the best gnocchi ever. La Vela is Italian for "The Sail" which is appropriate for its location on Scarborough Beach Road near the beach.
It's had different Italian owners previously, but the current chef is London-trained and very good at Italian food.
I've travelled throughout Italy and eaten in many Australian Italian restaurants, and can categorically say the gnocchi here is the tenderest and best I've ever tasted.

The fish is invariably good and always tender as well, and the prices are reasonable compared with some Perth restaurants that just seem to put up their prices without any corresponding parallel with quality of food.

Try the gnocchi here and let us know if it's always good.

We visited on Friday 2nd sept 2011, we called up to book a table and the were fully booked but had just recieved a cancelation so could fit us in. We arrived and it was very busy, a lot of atmosphere, however my wife and i felt that with so many people in there it was hard to hear each other. We ordered the shared mixbread starter, it was huge for two people. So certainly good value for money. However it was a little too oily. For mains we had the pepper chicken and the chicken with prawns ina white wine sauce. Both dishes are served with veges and potatoes. The portions were more than enough and the chicken and veg were all cooked toy liking, no complaints. We were too full to have desert or coffee however from what we saw from the tables around us the portions again looked big. All in all we enjoyed our dinner, good food, good value for money and good service. Its not fine dining but it is certainly a lot better than other Italian restaurants we have been to lately. We'd go again, preferably not when it's so busy thou as I like to be able to chat and hear the people im with.

My favourite italian restaurant. The gnocchi is by far the best in Perth! Their beef stuffed with prawns dish is also a standout.

Came here a couple weeks ago, what a hidden gem, great service & great food, had assorted antipasto as entrees + oysters- were delicious. Ordered the gnocchi, entree size as my main, was handmade & the best gnocchi I have ever tasted, I will be back here soon with some friends & I hope it's still this good. 9/10

Well well.. This quaint little eatery may look a little dumpy on the outside but boy o boy it really is a hidden gem. It dosent really matter that on the countless times i have eaten at Le Vela I have ordered the same dish GNOCCHI PORTOFINO.... My now favorite meal. My partner makes a point of trying something different each time and has never been disappointed. Even if you go just for the gnocchi you would be glad you went. Only gripe is at times a bit loud with kids running around.. But that's probably my bad for booking at table at 6.30pm.

Six of us visited La Vela on the 4 June 2011 for dinner. The food was very average, the black board special lacked flavour, the amount of seafood in the spaghetti marinana could be counted on one hand and was swimming in tomato paster/sauce and the chicken scalopinini was overpowered by pepper. Portion sizes were small, we even questioned the waitress as to if the portion was the main meal or the starter. You get a better tasting cofee at MacDonalds for half the price. Want a good italian meal then go to Siena's in Oxford St Leederville or Beaufort St Mt Lawley. All of us siad we would not go back.

Delicious, the calamari was fantastic, and the arancini balls. Kids meals were great value, I was impressed the kids got the same fresh calamari instead of frozen rings.

So wrong. After reading many reviews on how wonderful this restaurant is, my partner and I decided to try it. We orderd take away, however we did order $100 worth of food. I had the chicken la vela, omg how dry and discusting. It had pasta on the side that had a tea spoon of sauce and sauce that was worse than legos sauce. My partner got the steak that was a size of a 50 cent piece. It was tender as anything. For $22 what a rip off. Then we has a linguine marinara in cream sauce to share. It looked like seafood in a can. I would highly reccomend not to go there. I am hoping in the morning I don't get food poisoning. This restaurant is discusting. People of Perth who are writing these reviews, how can u think this food is accetable or any good. Truly disapointed.

Very dissappointing. After all the good to excellent reviews posted about this place we decided that it would be great place to take Mum for Mothers Day. Wrong! It appears to be totally lacking in ambience, no music and hardly any customers, what few there were did not stay for too long either. The food that we had was under cooked and very poorly presented. We will not be returning.
