Review The Scarborough Hotel - Scarborough

Connie Ngu
Beautiful location on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon! It’s only one hour drive from Sydney, not to mention the priceless views. The fish and chips was delicious, it was soft and flaky, not too fishy at all. The beets and pumpkin salad was flavorful with just the right amount of dressing. Burgers, pasta, prawns and oysters were also on the menu. They have a great selection of items for everyone. A very classy place with great service! Highly recommended

This location is fantastic on a bright and sunny day. Nothing like pub food and beer with a view. However like the other comments, can be better with the quality of food. Got the beef burger and chicken burger. I’d rate it above average for the food so def still room for improvement. Will recommend this as a pit stop if you’re driving past Sea Cliff Bridge.

Staff were very accommodating and friendly, considering we arrived at time the kitchen was preparing to close! They have a clever and efficient ordering system. Even on an overcast day, the atmosphere at the Scarborough is very relaxing and beautiful. The garden is designed to tolerate some wet weather so you can still enjoy yummy, fresh food with an exquisite ocean view.

The ocean view is stunning. We came at 11am without reservation and were lucky to get a big table in the balcony! On-site parking is quite limited. Burger is a bit dry and other food are average…paying the price more for the view :) it’s still worthwhile to pay a visit here.

Beer always hits the spot. Meals are.... portions are very small for the $$. Location is A+++. Edit- I was wondering if my view on the food was experienced by others and upon review of the review I was not surprised. When will this establishment take note that food quality and portions are important. With this location it could be rated up there with the best hotels on the east coast.

Excellent location and delicious food, however it is a bit expensive and a 15% public holiday surcharge doesn't help. Also had to wait almost an hour for the food today as they were understaffed. I really did enjoy the seafood pie and pasta though, and would like to come back when it is less busy.
Chris
Nice pub on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Lots of tables outside and room for kids to play. Food's okay but portions are a bit stingy and they charge you 12.5% extra on Sundays which I find a bit off putting. Minus one star for that. Can't they just factor in and average out costs like other businesses? Parking is also extremely limited. Be prepared to park a long way down the road and walk back. Overall though it's a nice place with friendly staff and the view is amazing.

We went for lunch and the salad was so friggen good there. There are three on the menu and we tried two - the chicken salad and the mango salad my golly god I 100% recommend these two, they were both fresh to the max! Aahhh I wanna get it again srsly best salad I cry.. we also ordered pasta, fish and chips, garlic bread and calamari. Fish and chips super nice, rest were okay ish. But please get those salads omgoodness

Went for a drive down the coast for the day and chose the Scarborough Hotel to dine at. Such an amazing view overlooking the water (make sure to get a table outside), and great service. <br/><br/>Food was quick, reasonably priced and quite tasty, as well as a big variety of drink options to choose from.

Great day to be overlooking the water. Wonderful seat on the balcony enjoying a cup of amazing Vittoria Coffee and eating the Lamb and Cous Cous salad.

Very beautiful hotel with amazing locations. The sea food was very tasty specially crabs and prawns. Staff is very friendly. Love to visit again, highly recommend.

Visited the Scarborough Hotel on a short drive down the coast for the day. During winter, so the weather was clear and perfect. If you do live in Sydney, I would really recommend doing this!<br/><br/>Food: I had the Grainfed Sirloin Medium Rare which was delicious!<br/>Service: You don't see too much of the staff when sitting on the lawn/ downstairs and this could have been because of a mid-week lunch there weren't a lot of people around. <br/>Ambience: Loved the vibe. Very relaxed which is what I look for. You cannot go past the view. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Love this place. Amazing view matched by outstanding service and awesome food.<br/>We had the salmon with mashed potato and salsa verde. It was absolutely delicious.

Food is really inconsistent and expensive for what it is. We sent one meal back (a $27 pasta that was tasteless, unseasoned, no Parmesan, no garnish, just basic boiled pasta and Passata (tomato). My partner had fish and chips (which was half the size as the people next to us, and every fish and chips that came out was a different portion size than the last). I felt bad for the poor manager who was working that day, we watched about 8 meals get sent back for various reasons. The poor woman must have spent her entire shift dealing with complaints. You basically come here for a drink and the view. Eat somewhere else.

Cute pub set at the foot of the mountains, boasting picturesque views of the ocean and stanwell tops. Quite a short menu, wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t like seafood; in saying that - the food wasn’t too bad. The coffee, along with the view was probably the highlight for me.

Went here for a friend's birthday lunch. Unfortunately the weather didn't hold out for us but it was a great spot nevertheless. We sat upstairs as it was undercover and heated. <br/>A beautiful spot and a beautiful view. <br/>The food was decent but nothing standout. I'd definitely go back but for the location more so than the food.

My reviews are based on my personal experience of visiting this Restaurant and can be categorised as per below :<br/>------------------------------------------------<br/>- Location : 10 min walk from Scarborough station<br/>- Cuisine : English lunch menu and drinks<br/>- Taste : Average <br/>- Staff : Friendly staff<br/>- Ambience : one of the best location beach facing<br/>- Serving per plate : Very good and waiting time is less<br/>- Cost for two : $50 for two with no drinks<br/>- What I tried : There are multiple options to choose from. <br/>- In short : Good place for the stop over lunch while driving down to kiama, jervis Bay etc<br/>We got mosquito in our of salads but this was for the first time.<br/>Olive was missing in one of our salads.<br/>Overcrowded between 12-1:30 PM M-F

Totally came for the view, better come early if you want to save a seat outside overlooking the ocean, if not, then it’s good to walk out after.<br/><br/>We got the cheeseburger and the sirloin, it was very yummy (we were also very hungry). The chips are very well done. Steak is actually cooked to medium rare and it was juicy and tender.<br/>Burger is flavourful and intact. View is unbeatable.

Came here for a friend's birthday on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, it was absolutely packed. We got a table on the balcony- overlooking the garden , ordered lots of food to share , no table service so basically we had to order our food and drinks at the counter and then picked up at the counter ! Food is very very average and the price is not cheap but I totally understand as this hotel only makes money on the nice weather days. We went last year on a rainy day. And it was completely deserted ! We probly enjoyed each other companies and the beautiful weather more than the food !

Had lunch with a friend on a Tuesday. Facility was great and views were amazing but to spend $30 on a grilled barramandi and chips that is usually $10-$15 at a regular pub. What a joke. I can understand if it was cooked nicely but $30 for grilled and deep fried food? The $25 cheeseburger wasnt anything special as well. Food is a rip off everyone.

The view from this place is spectacular. The prices for what is offered are not. I ordered the seafood pasta and was very underwhelmed by what was offered for the price paid. The meals took almost 50 minutes to arrive although the staff were apologetic. In the bathrooms, the hand dryer didn't work and there was no paper towel either. The experience was good but definitely not great.

This location is spectacular. I love sitting out on the cliffside garden with a glass of wine or cider and watch the ocean and sometimes spy a whale! The cafe right at the entrance is also lovely to enjoy a coffee or tea with pastry, the lemon meringue tart is delicious.  I haven't tried the food menu but this is my go-to spot when taking a drive along the coast on a sunny day.

Heard so much about the infamous Scarborough hotel from various friends and all recommended. Ordered the seafood plate with my significant other and was expecting a nice array of appealing prawns, salmon, oysters etc as mentioned in the menu.<br/><br/>However, I was not prepared for what we were about to receive.<br/>At $27 I thought I was about to be burst full of marine life and aquatic delicacies.<br/>This was not the case.<br/>Three prawns. Two oysters. Cat shit (crab meat). Dog shit and caviar (smoked salmon). White rubber (calamari).<br/>Was this it? We looked at each other as if to say "what the @!$&??".<br/>We proceeded to try the dog shit and not only did we gag over the taste, but the horrifying smell that resembled that of a dried up pair of testicles. <br/><br/>We ate it all against every will of our bodies to spare blushes that we had just been ripped off by a high class rip off merchant in disguise. Rather this place was as efficient as a 63 year old father attempting to cook up a storm in his granny flat in Dapto.<br/><br/>I shall never be going here again nor spreading word of it's absolute pathetic food quality. I can get the view for free so it doesn't even entice me with that.<br/>

Love this place, never been disappointed, not the cheapest Gastro Pub around but I challenge you to find a better beer garden or outlook. We have seen whales breaching while sipping on ciders or downing beers with a choice steak, restaurant is always busy on weekends the beer garden kitchen has some great options if you're frugal

Great views from the garden area on the back of the hotel and super food. Decent sized portions. Loved sitting around and soaking in the views while enjoying some fresh seafood.
Kate Oneill
Food is average and overpriced. I would say it is definitely more aimed at tourists passing through who will love the view. It is in a beautiful location and always very busy, but I have never been very impressed wirh the food quality.
Daniela Marques
Lovely view combined with good food, what else? Stay away from the pasta, though, but apart from that the seafood and the salads were really good.

En route down the south coast, we couldn't miss this supposedly iconic hotel located on the edge of the water. The location is wonderful, high up & with breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and coastline. It has a beer garden which is great for lunch or a drink on a sunny day. There is a variety of food on the menu which includes all the pub and bistro classics. The food is good but not mind blowing and a little on the pricey side. So come here to relax, appreciate the views and enjoy a refreshment which is the perfect pit stop for a road trip.

Great view, damn shame about the so called council policy that means you can't take your kids dinner home if they can't eat it all! Food was pretty average. You were pretty much paying for the view and the cute barman instead of a good meal. Rorting rich Sydney visitors with crazy prices. $17 for a kids meal!

Beautifully positioned venue, right on a cliff face over the coast. Panoramic views outside. Very limited parking, so its first come first serve or you need to find street parking (which can be a tad messy). The menu has nothing that stands out, the usual fish and chips, beef burger, oysters kind of deal. I ordered the seafood plate, it was small and boring ($26). Mostly Decent to small portions, so you won't need to unbutton and probably can't share. The waitress we dealt with while ordering was, well, not very hospitable to put it nicely. Pet friendly, indoor seating available, outdoor seating only avail for groups of 6+ and is timed. Beautiful venue, alright food.... I'll go again if invited, but would chose another venue if it were up to me.

We made a pit stop at the Scarborough Hotel for a quick drink. <br/>Despite the fact we that didn't get to try any food, it is a great location with a lot of different seating options - there are separate rooms, an outdoor area, and other standard seats all throughout the venue. The views in particular are spectacular. The food smelled and looked great! It is worth a stop, and we look forward to going back for a meal.

Visited twice now... there's only one reason you're coming here and that's for the view. Food is very average pub food (i.e. frozen calamari). Service is fast as it caters for the crowds. Just under $30 for a main so at the high end of a pub meal. In saying all of that, it is one of the most stunning spots to enjoy a drink on a sunny day.

Service was great at the hotel's   indoor restaurant. The food however, is very overpriced   considering the  so-so quality. The Barramundi fish quality  is   woeful. At $29 ,one expects  a better quality  Barramundi fish. The   salad was  disappointing and of  a cheap quality. The  desert  only consisted of  poor quality cakes.  Could someone please clean the large plastic  covers  used to keep out the wind. They looked like they had not been cleaned in years. Not a nice view to  have to look at   during lunch.

The Scarborough Hotel is a must do on a sunny day. Great for a day trip from Sydney and perfect date location.<br/><br/>The view out the back is breathtaking and only gets more amazing the more you look.<br/><br/>The food is pretty average, but you don't mind so much with the view.

Awesome view. Food okay. You go here for the spectacular views not the food. The food isn't bad, just typical pub food. We had scrambled eggs on toast... Eggs were okay only 1 piece of toast...
Cinntonic
Gorgeous drive, with a lovely pub with a lovely view at the end. Absolutely no need for the queue; 30% of the tables are reserved with >2hr no show. Stupid system. Let people in to wait around the bar with a drink, that's what we did and pulled up a piece of grass next to several empty tables.

I've been told by many to head to Scarborough Hotel, it's a bit out of the way for me but today I decided to head out there. I'm not sure why I put off going there for so long, this place is stunning. We just stopped in for a beer to check it out, the atmosphere was really casual and friendly. All the food looked fresh and delicious. I imagine it would be a great place for a birthday function, a real kid friendly environment. Without a reservation don't expect to sit at a table with just your partner, friends or family. You may be asked to share with others. None the less, Scarborough Hotel is a gem on the eastern coast and is worth going for, for the view alone.

The main reason to come here is for the views and the nice outdoor area. The lines to line up to order food is long but getting your food is pretty fast. Had the beer battered flathead with squid and my gf had the mango prawn salad. My dish was not bad, less chips than expected but still nice. My partners dish had no dressing on it and for some reason some of the prawns had the tail left on it while others weren't. Prices were a little higher than expected,I wouldn't mind trying something else on the menu next time
Sweetandyummie
The car drive down is just gorgeous and when the weather is sunny then this place is the best place to stop by. Its on the tad pricey side but your probably paying a premium for the wonderful ocean views your getting while you smash down a burger.
Karen
The setting was beautiful but the food was awful and service was slow and terrible. It's a shame as this place could be something special if the service and food improved drastically. Would only recommend it for the scenery.
Kololee
I had the iconic New York Steak and my plus one had a salad. Both dishes were really well done and filling. It was just a tad on the expensive side, which brings down the ratings a bit.
Next Stop: Food
Delicious patty with sweet onion and melted cheese oozing out makes this burger really moreish. It's even more enjoyable when having it with a beautiful view.

Rip off!. We spent $51 on food $19 for a pint each(2 pints). It's just plain old pub food at very inflated prices. Great location especially on a week day when it's a bit quieter. I'd rate my meal a 3/10. I was still hungry afterwards & the salad tasted awful. Other than the location I would not recommend this place.

Rip Off. Such a shame such a nice pub in such a great location has to be such a rip off $26 for two pints.<br/><br/><br/>-----19 Feb, 2015-----<br/><br/>What a Rort. Such a shame such a great pub in such a great location has to be such a rip off. <br/>$26 for two pints.. disgraceful.

Amazing view!!! Best beer garden ever!! Service was friendly and we got our meals fast. The meals were a good size and delicious! We will be back!

Food was good, nothing to write home about though. <br/>Just a normal big breakfast with an even bigger price tag.

Bland. The boring food ruins the views
Jessy
Burnt toast & invisible mushrooms. Not what I expected for a $19 big breakfast. The view makes up for it, somewhat.

Dave. Counter meal 2x fish and chips and 1 beer 1 soft drink $ 60. Great place to visit just dont eat or drink

Terrible. Finally went to Scarborough Hotel for breakfast. We arrived early so as to beat the rush and we really should have stayed home. My husband and I ordered the big breakfast and our daughter ordered the pancakes. Very expensive and a very limited menu. Food was luke warm and I would guess sitting in warmers for awhile. The eggs were cooked at time of order I think although our poached eggs were more hard boiled than anything else. None of us finished our meals and to top it off coffee was the same as the breaky, luke warm and bitter so we left that as well. Orange juice was mainly ice. So all in all a bad experience, the only saving grace was a coffee we picked up on the way home at Chedo's. Next time I think we'll have breaky there as well.
Kate
Ridiculously over priced food with tiny portion sizes. After 4pm the menu is minimal, not even chips are available! This pub has a lot of potential but it misses the mark.

House of draconian rules. Whatever you do, don't pre-book. If you do, you must comply with the following:-<br/>l. Guarantee a $150 spend.<br/>2. Agree to 6 people attending.<br/>3. Give all credit card details over the phone.<br/>4. Agree to vacate your table at 2.15pm.<br/>Upon arrival, you will be requested to hand over until departure, not only your credit card, but your drivers licence as well. <br/>Food from a limited menu is average to good, but overpriced by approximately 20 percent. Young staff try their best amidst criticism and complaints. The manager is your ultimate ineffectual clown. The business is set up for the foreign tourist trade. Avoid the place like the plague!

Amazing View! Small food portions, bad service, way too over priced!!!!! The previous management was way better! Won't be returning!

Wow!!!!. What a great place a diamond on the coast, john dory was prefect<br/>I cant rave enough .. so pleased too see young staff being so respectfull and pleasant, management should b very proud......<br/>SEE YOU SOON
Michael Dragicevich
Staff nice enough but service incredibly slow (80 minutes to serve lunch on a Tuesday), cold when it did arrive, raw batter on salt and pepper squid. Overpriced to boot.
CJ
Great view, great beer garden...unfortunately that's it for positives....As a local from nearby Austinmer I take people occasionally for a beer but the high $ and relative quality of the food means eating here is not worthwhile....they've tried to re-invent it 12 months ago but it is now even more disappointing. Drinks are way overpriced. I agree with other reviews, have an overpriced drink enjoy the view and move on. Shame, this place has potential but it is clearly just now a tourist trap and not trying to get repeat customers.
Sarah
Overpriced food and unaccommodating staff. Went for breakfast on a quiet Monday morning (we were the only people in the cafe). The breakfast menu is very limited so we made a request to order the eggs on toast (which was a menu option) with a side of bacon - not too difficult one wouldn't imagine given that bacon is a popular breakfast item and it was available in the 'Big Breakfast'.<br/><br/>Our request was met with a very bitter response that the "chef" was unhappy as this wasn't a set menu option. They reluctantly agreed but then wanted to charge so much extra that the eggs plus bacon would have been more expensive than the big breakfast ($21)!!<br/><br/>Nice view but not worth the hefty price tag and uncomfortable atmosphere created by staff with a terrible attitude!
Anita
Anita. Went for lunch on Sunday, view great but menu limited. 3 of us had salt & pepper squid which was $18.80 and consisted of 7 small pieces of squid and a small limp salad. Our other friend order a medium steak and it came out dripping with blood, apart from the view it was very over priced for under average food. Stop for a beer and enjoy the view and eat somewhere else.
Tim
This is an amazing venue. Its has beautiful views and great food. The staff were very friendly and good to have a chat with. Will definitely be returning here soon!
Little Eats Sydney
The Scarborough Hotel and stunning outdoor terrace will take your breathe away. The beautiful grassed area is perfect for playing tip or running races. Its delicious menu with array of seafood choices will be devoured by you and your little ones. Be sure to head here for a day full of family fun in the sun. Detailed Review: It was a sunny Sunday, after days of rain and a toddler climbing the walls of our unit we ventured south for a day trip out of town. About 20 minutes south of Sutherland, perched beautifully upon the cliff overlooking an amazing view is The Scarborough Hotel. We had visited the hotel in our pre-parent days and had fond memories of the place – kicking back in the sun, drinking in the view and cider. Why couldn’t we rekindle those times with our gorgeous daughter in tow? The Scarborough Hotel is a gorgeous old building built in 1886, its stately façade gives way to a stunning outdoor terrace
Gastronomous Anonymous
It’s very child friendly, and kids can run around on the grass whilst the adults sit and have lunch, drink and soak in the sun!...There’s no table service, it’s pretty much all self service. The menu is your typical pub food which consists of salads, pasta, burgers and steak....I couldn’t go past the special – beef burger with the lot! It was one of the biggest burgers I have eaten, two beef patties, cheese, tomato, salad, aioli and drizzled with a little bit of chili sauce. I have to admit it was messy but it was good and extremely satisfying. Oh there was also beetroot which I LOVE!
