The taste was alright, really really cheap! My favourite is the wagyu beef, so tender and melted in your mouth. The fried chicken with passion fruit dip was quite nice too.
Pork ribs was good. And they serve dishes so fast.I strongly recommend you order a veggie should help you digest as I drank as much water as I could.A bit cloying when you got stir fried rice with squid.
Very nice restaurant with reasonable price. We ordered the squid ink rice and the Singapore-style fish. They all taste amazing. Only downside is you have to wait for a while to enter as this restaurant does not accept any reservation.
This is a pretty good Chinese restaurant for delicious filling dishes. The portions are really large and definitely worth its price. I tried the stir fried sliced potato which was really good and the garlic prawn with stir fried rice in squid ink which was one of my favourites. The place gets pretty busy during peak times so get there early or wait!
My favourite restaurant in Hurstville, hands down. It has one of the most inventive menus I have seen for Chinese food and - importantly - delicious, yet inexpensive. The dishes are exceptionally presented, which was a real delight to see (let's just say presentation isn't high up on the list of priorities in Chinese cuisine - and this comes from a Chinese person!).Almost every dish I have tried has had some sort of surprising and interesting twist to it. You can really tell a lot of effort has gone into both creating the menu and the food.
My favourite dishes (in order of preference) are the Garlic Prawn with Stir Fried Rice in Squid Ink Sauce, Deep Fried Eggplant in Bread Crumb, Shanghai Braised Pork Belly and Singapore Style Barramundi - but ONLY when paired with deep fried buns (which you can use to soak up that spicy sauce).
Honourable mentions go to the Wagyu Beef with Chips (which is incredibly tender), Seafood Noodle Soup and the Marinated Tender Chicken in Vegetable Sauce - that mysterious green sauce is a delightful novelty, although I probably wouldn't order it more than once. Do not bother with the Pan Fried Pork Bun as there are better in Hurstville.
Get in there early as otherwise there will be a wait. Aim to get there by about 5:30pm.
Overall, a must try if you are in the area.
Very busy restaurant in Hurstville, it always has a big queue outside in peak lunch & dinner hour. Big portions with a reasonable price are the reasons to that. The restaurant is pretty fast paced, once you have made your order, the food comes to the table very fast. They probably want you to finish the food quickly so they can serve another round. 😏
Their most popular dish is Garlic prawn with stir fried rice in squid ink. Big prawns are deep fried in a golden batter coated in creamy garlic sauce. The garlic taste is mild, not overpowering the subtle flavour of the squid ink rice. Other return dishes would be Turnip strips cake, Shredded pork fried vermicelli & King prawn with salty egg yolks. 👍🏻 The no no dishes would be Spicy duck feet with mint leaves and Pig trotter & duck feet in homemade chilli sauce. 👎🏻 Both dishes were overly salty, the duck feet in the stone bowl were too hard to chew. The cold appetizer, Chicken in homemade spicy sauce was a rip off. The whole plate was filled with spring onions, chilli & garlic, you only get a few pieces of small boned chicken pieces in between, it looked totally different from the picture on the menu. 🙄
I know they have joints in Chatswood, Burwood but tonight we try Hurstville Store. Got seated straight away. We ordered the beer brew duck, Singapore Barramundi and Lamb Ribs.
The food came instantly and I mean instantly in the sense that they knew what you were going to order and prepped it while you were thinking and finally deciding. This could be. Good thing, if you have starved for five days and you want food NOW. It’s a bad thing if you are thinking is this stuff pre-cooked and then Nuked!
Well all dishes were bubbling lava of goodness. All tasty and not too oily. The sauce with the fish eggy tomatoey. Bowls of rice were ordered to soak up the sauces. Well worth a try!
Mr Stonebowl always seem crowded whenever we drive/walk pass the branch at Burwood. So, when we are at Hurstville and saw there is no queue we just had to go in to see what the fuss is about.
There are too many choices to choose from and frankly, majority won't suit my tastebuds. We just ordered the typical ones that we know of (some may say boring dishes). The dishes we ordered were all very good and the portion is quite substantial too.
This is a place where you would enjoy the food and quickly leave as it is often noisy due to the huge number of patrons and long queue.
Food wise, recommended.
Such good value in a group... it’s almost unfathomable. Like $10 per person to eat till you pass out. The servings are actually huge so don’t do one dish per person, you’ll never finish it. There’s a loooot to choose from and they’re all huge and filling. It’s really nice Shanghainese food and great for big groups. The shrimp with squid ink rice is a must-try, but they’re all tasty :)
Good authentic Chinese feed. I had a new menu item (as at 2018) Fukien Combination Noodles which I think was no.36. Really impressed.
Though I reckon the way they cram customers into the place, it must be in breach of some health and safety laws haha.
The Singapore style barramundi here is worth trying! We also ordered the garlic prawn with squid ink rice, lamb chops with roseberry sauce and snowpea sprouts in garlic sauce. I would recommend getting the fish and lamb, they are the most worth it. Though pricing is also very reasonable but be aware it does get quite busy during dinner time so plan to come ahead of time since there is no booking.
The squid ink rice is amazing. Definitely order. Also order the stir fried green beans with egg plant. Not that well known but equally impressive. Decent prices. Generous servings. My new go to restaurant in the area.
Authentic Chinese food
When a Chinese comments this, she meant Authentic Chinese👍🏼
Portion is perfect for two people, tastes really great if you wanna try something that's not Hongkong style or spicy, guess thats what makes Mr Stonebowl special and always quequed up.
I also have to mention that because of the crowdness and the place is always packed, do expect long waiting time for your seats (But the dishes come quickly n waiting staffs are very helpful). And the waiting staff may have to shout a bit in order to prep your table quickly.
Great experience overall,
Recommended if you just want something hot to eat at a raining night or just trying out something new like me!
The food is amazeballs xo definitely try their Chinese food, ten out of ten must try!!! :-)))) ni hao ma!!!! Hen hao chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii !!!!
Mr Stonebowl is different. They offer innovative Chinese dishes with a twist that is damn tasty and at a really good price that have us keep on coming back. They are popular for these reasons and are always busy but the service I've received has been good each time. I recommend their signature squid ink rice with fried prawns in creamy sauce!
Food is good and affordable, but customer service is a bit lacking. Had our table given to another group despite us being there first, then proceeded to move us to another table just as we were sitting down. Would come again if the service quality improved.
Located conveniently in the heart of Hurstville. Came here for lunch the second time, service was fast and foods were delicious! The pan friend steamed buns were so juicy and flavorful with a bit of vinegar.
Their prices are very reasonable, for the quality of foods, hence they’re always so busy.
Highly recommended for authentic Chinese foods. They have their own unique twist on Chinese foods and come up with different flavors to elevate your tastebuds!
Have been here many times and it’s always a solid feed. Good portions and good flavours. They consistently update the menu so there is always something new to try. The food also comes on quite quickly and altogether so you’re never left waiting for too long.
The food was delicious !!! We got the beef on the "new dishes" menu, and the lamb chop. I like the fact that those dishes were not oily, and the sauce for beef was perfect.
Though the food are good, staffs are friendly, cooking is fast, there are few things that may be annoyed to some people:
1. They get super busy after 5pm. So either you come early or book a table in advance.
2. Many dishes on the menu are not available. So check with staffs first before choosing your dish.
I will definitely come back next time to try their seafood menu.
Famous for it's great tasting food, consistent quality, and value. Mr Stonebowl will not dissappoint you. This busy modern eatery is located opposite the revamped Hurstville Station, adjacent to the new bus terminus. Business is brisk, and you may need a short wait to be seated. This place is popular, and rightly so. We tried something different and had a "cold appetiser" of marinated baby octopus with mushroom sesame oil......it was delightful! followed by their famous Peking Pork Ribs (Ging Do Gwut), and braised king mushroom with garlic shoots, another favourite. Needless to say, we couldn't finish the meal, and had to doggy bag the rest.
I walked pass this restaurant many times before lockdown. The queue was so long to wait. Luckily, today I can have a table straight away.
We ordered 3 popular dishes to try. Garlic prawn, deep fried barramundi and chicken chilli. It makes no surprise why always have line up at the front. The food was delicious and very big portion. Reasonable price. Highly recommended.
This is a very nice restaurant, the food was exquisite and presented in a aesthetic manner. The Shanghai influence to the food makes the taste very new and amazing. I would definetly recommend coming here. This food straight up bussin and clapped. Burnt my younger on the steaming chicken but on Jah recommend.
Nice place. Busy place but the food is good. We were not familiar with the menu , so we ended up with surplus food even we ordered 2 items for 2 people.
