Review D'tandoor - South Perth

Debra De Vos
Authentic Indian cuisine. Variety of excellent curry dishes accompanied by the best naan bread baked in an authentic d'Tandoor. We have supported this business for the past 7 years and love his new cozy venue. The owner-chef and his wife always try their best to make your dinner memorable.

Had a lovely night at their new restaurant location on Mill Point Road. The food was superbly prepared and cooked and all the dishes from entree to main and finally to the most fragrant masala tea blessed with ginger ultimately satisfying with a price that’s reasonable. One of the best Indian restaurants for the Indian experience. The decor is modest, the lighting could do with a bit of dimming and some Indian effects and music to add to the cultural experience. Though this is a new premises for D’Tandoor in South Perth so sure these ambiences should arrive soon. Ignore the Google message “Restaurant now closed”. This is wrong. The restaurant is truly open and live and ready for your dine in experience or takeaway order. Highly recommended.

Amazing Indian food with great service. We are so lucky to have you within walking distance from our home. The butter chicken is one of the best I have had. Will definitely be a regular!

We ate dinner here tonight and it was delicious. My daughter is a butter chicken connoisseur and says it’s the bests she’s ever eaten. The naan bread cooked authentically was great. We will definitely be back.

We are on a holiday in Perth and wanted to try the neighborhood Indian restaurant since we were craving for some Indian food. D tandoor was the correct place for it. We loved the food. We had ordered butter chicken, chicken vindaloo and the weekend special goat curry uth butter naan. Everything was perfect. Very hospitable and warm staff and welcoming. Thank you. See you soon

The dine in and catered food was excellent. Guests enjoyed every dish including the dessert, kesari. Raj gave plenty of food when we catered his food for guests at home and he was very generous with his servings. A delightful man to work with; his wife was also such a helpful person. Will continue to cater from D'Tandoor as he caters to your needs, taste and is so punctual with the orders. Very satisfied. Ambiga and family.

Placed a large order for my work for lunch takeaway. Raj was excellent and made sure we got what we ordered. The food was excellent. Will definitely be back in the future.

Best Indian food. Samosas are amazing! Fresh vegetables and proper chunks of meat. This is a staple takeaway place for us.

The takeaway food we ordered was great on Mother’s Day. I don’t know how the 1 chef in the kitchen managed the night with order after order but nevertheless he worked at dizzying pace to meet it, while the sweet young Indian lass took orders and money and in between placed the food in packs while customers observed social distancing by sitting on tables here and there 2m apart. We loved the sultana embedded naan, there could have been more pappadums!, but our Beef vindaloo and Rojan Josh was superb! The decor is terribly drab and this restaurant should consider refurbishing the tired 30 year old look and warped ceiling with a beautiful new fit out for post Covid-19 dining. It’s a great retreat despite the decor for a night of Indian Kashmir. Well done chef on Mother’s Day. I’m sure he made $3000 that night as a 1 man band!

This little Indian restaurant is tucked away in a corner upstairs on mends street, opposite the Thai orchid. Came for mid week dinner and ordered a few dishes to share. The Butter chicken was lovely, the aloo gobi punjabi (Cauliflower and potatoes) was ok, the Kashmiri pulao rice was a bit sweet for my taste, the Garlic naan was ordinary and the tandoori roti was ok. Food on the whole was pretty good but nothing amazing or particularly memorable. Service was friendly and the owner/manager came out to check on the tables which was nice. Decor is a bit tired, prices are pretty standard, D’tandoor is good if you’re looking for some casual Indian dining in south Perth.
We have been going to D'tandoor for about five years now. Always the best food and cheerful service. THE best Butter chicken in Perth, by far.

Last time we went to d'tandoor, the waitress was very misleading and had us order way more food than we could eat. She initially suggested we order 6 dishes and 10 orders of naan (for 5 people) including 2 orders of rice - however we decided to get 6 orders of naan instead. Turns out it was way too much and we had naan leftover at home for the following week (it's still here).

We ordered the goat curry, palak paneer, prawn kashmiri, butter chicken, aloo gobi and tandoori chicken too. Needless to say, we also had to takeaway everything. The curries were good but definitely very pricey for what its worth (~$26 per dish) and the tandoori chicken sorta lacked flavour and was a bit on the dry side. Overall it was quite decent food - worth checking out.

It was a nice experience but only didn't like the waitress being misleading about the portion sizes and the food also took forever! But the chef gave us a complimentary falafel like dish so it was quite nice whilst we waited for the food.

Would come back for the $10 lunch special though! That's worth the price.

One word review - Amazing... More words - For years I've craved the British style North Indian Curry that seems to be so rare in Australia so when I tried the food here I was very happy as I'd finally found it here in South Perth- absolutely delicious London-style curry~! Another bonus is that for under $10 the lunchtime special is unbelievable value - the servings come complete with fresh steamed rice and papadums and the portion size is so filling I usually have half for lunch and keep the rest for dinner! I recommend the butter chicken - just perfect, and the lamb rogan josh is rich and spicy with a touch of clove. I really can not recommend enough. I've read a few reviews here complaining about the evening prices so if that's important to you just head in there for lunch - you can't go wrong!

The curry was good for Australian standards, however it was too expensive, and no doubt this price due to its location and overheads. On a Friday night they were extremely understaffed. I had a booking at 6.30 and we did not receive food until 7.45 despite ordering near on straight away. There were only 3 other tables dining. Furthermore the chef (only person in kitchen, with one wait staff) ripped into a customer picking up takeout as he queried why the order was close to an hour late. Huge customer service no no, do not berate customer and especially not with people watching on in the restaurant. Won't return despite living walking distance, shame.

The worse Indian I've had in ages. Very expensive & not worth it. The Kashmiri rice was $12, gluggy with hardly anything in it. Butter chicken tasted ok, but not enough of it for $26!!
D'Tandoor is a Mohammedan Indian restaurant, perched above the lower half of Mends st. Thoughtfully they use halal products for their customers, who appreciate the gesture. Unfortunately its another cookie cutter Indian eatery (close your eyes and you can guess 90% of the menu). The firm favorites (like a distant uncle disheveled and slightly creepy) are all represented on the menu the Glaswegian Chicken Tikka Masala, Australian Chicken, Lamb, Prawn Vindalhoo (its a Goan dish made only with pork), and Naan and Biryani (Persian). I have always wondered why are the vegetable dishes are so expensive (between $19-21), should be a lot cheaper due to cost of materials. So yes if you want stylised Euro-Indian food, which is on the dear side this is your restaurant. I would rather pass kidney stones without pain medication then be dragged here again.

Impromptu dinner with friends last night. The food was great and the staff were too! Prices are very reasonable. Can definitely recommend. Will be going again asap!

So glad to find good local Indian again! Their creamy butter chicken is definitely the best we've had! Beef masala was quite spicy for us (made us tear up but we're not big spicy food eaters 😜)...we got some freshly made yoghurt to help us through the dish. Prices of dishes are steep though, the decors are outdated, wobbly & broken chairs need to be renewed and no wheelchair facility to go up to the restaurant. We would come more often and happy to pay the prices if the restaurant is updated. Overall food is definitely good! 👍🏼😊

Food is awesome. Best butter chicken and prawn masala i have ever tasted. The quality of the food is worth the money. It is simply too delicious and i have to say, this is the best indian food i have ever eaten and most definitely the best in perth.

Fantastic roti & indian breads (Nan). Curries not too spicy. Great place to catch up with friends. Tasting plate above. Or platter for 3 at $37.9 with a bit of everything to try. The samosas and onion bhaji were warm and fresh. Butter Nan $6.9 on left and Kashmiri nan $7.9 on right. Kasmiri nan was chewy and sweet.

This little gem of a place is our go to place for some authentic Indian good. Very friendly staff and amazing food. Have the vidaloo with naan if you are in for something spicy. Love it,

My go to curry house in South Perth..everything made from scratch and u can taste the freshness..the lady who works at the counter is always friendly and has a smile

Food was great! Service was a bit slow and it was hard to get the attention from the hostess/waitress. Liked the little pots the food is being served in! Overall average! But pricy

Understaffed and overpriced. The food is delicious, but it takes a long time to order and then a longer time for the food to come out. To give you a sense of the pricing, a small bowl of butter chicken was $26, while the rice (which supposedly serves two, but hopefully those two aren't hungry) costs $6.50. And, unlike most Indian places, papadams cost extra.

Great meal! I'm visiting from the East coast. It was a delicious food, friendly service, BYO. I can definitely recommend this place for a nice relaxed meal.

I went with my friends who came from overseas..
service was ok
we ordered naan and back side was totally burned
I asked them to change and never receive naans again..
I m from india and who knows better than us about naans.
Total bill went upto $150 with no nonveg and no beer.
when I asked to remove the amount of naan from bill
the service girl refused to do it and after few horrible conversations with her, she asked chef if she could remove the price of nann.
and she gave me discount of one naan from the bill
Amazinngggg poor
...guys I dont visit it again and also tell me friends to avoid such restsurents...

Not so good!. Ordered takeaway over a weekend. Upon collection the restaurant was empty and we wondered why!
Our meal ended up in the bin, entree was rock hard and inedible and the meat in the mains was full of fat and gristle. Won't be going back!

-----16 Dec, 2014-----

Great Indian meal. If you want a good hot curry then this is a great find. We had a takeaway and it was every bit as good as when we dined here a few weeks ago. The staff are lovely too.

-----23 Nov, 2014-----

Great meal. Being regular diners at Chutney Mary's we weren't expecting much when we visited D'Tandoor as we were the only people eating there. What a surprise, the lamb rogan josh was fabulous, no fat on the meat which was so tender and delicious. The garlic naan was the best we've ever had. We'll definitely be back.

Delightful service and food every time!. The warm and friendly service coupled with the most delicious butter chicken makes my experience at D'Tandoor very enjoyable every time.

Good food but pricy.. Went here for my birthday with my folk's and girlfriend, the meats are halal so my girlfriend wouldn't be restricted to seafood. Was a quite Tuesday evening.
We ordered the set menu - entrees were chicken tikka and a fried and battered veggies. Mains were a variety of curries, naan bread and rice. Small dessert. Food was generally pretty good, not spectacular, did notice the tikka was a bit tough and the butter chicken was too sweet for my taste. Service was excellent, but the restaurant was very quiet. Worked out to be $170 for 4 of us, generally more expensive than other comparable Indian places I have been to, also noted that from other menu items I was looking at. Overall not a bad choice for a local (price probably would not bother the South Perth locals), I wouldn't bother travelling across town to come here tho as u can get comparable Indian for less elsewhere and u may have to pay for parking around this area too. No wheelchair access fyi.

The service is friendly. The food is good and a stroll by the river after the meal is brilliant.

Best Butter Chicken. This place does an amazing Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan - for me it is the best I have ever had and every time I return it is the same lovely service! The Onion Baji as a starter is a generous size so are the mains! Me and my partner share a main and side of rice but we always leave here full and with a container or two of leftovers - the staff always offer to pack them into takeaway containers for us to take home which I think is great! If you like Butter Chicken you must go here and try it!

Very Expensive comparing to food & restaurant standards. (Peshwari naan for nearly $9 (damn)). Food and service were average. . Its not abt money but is it worth that expense? Will not recomend.
Sonya
Beware!! Overwhelmingly over priced, shocking service and terrible food. Watch out for: waiter with Harry Potter glasses, Mr 'Cool', who doesn't use a note pad so forgets item of order without so much as an apology, hidden charges ($5 for chilli) as my 'hot'' curry was bland and the prawns were rubber - which cost $29! Beware don't waste your time or money.
Critic
Indian?. Somewhat embarassing to label themselves an Indian outfit. Food was bland and flavourless. What happened to the spice and flavour that is supposed to come with vindaloo? Why was the butter chicken extraordinarily sweet and not creamy? Why did the chicken tikka lack chilli and spice?

Good value good service. The food here is always good and the staff are most helpful

We eat here every couple of months and have yet to be disappointed.

The curries are amongst the better we have had in perth

One disappointment is the lack of the availability of Malaysian food as displayed on the menu

Hit and miss. Been here 4 times in the last year, been good twice, the other 2 average. On one occasion, the butter chicken was a orange/yellow colour - still tasted reasonable. Another time we asked for extra gravey in the chicken tikka masala, i think they poured water out of a kettle to make up the extra gravy as it was watery. The other two times it was brilliant. Very pleasant and cheerful lady seating and taking orders.

Great food, great service! Had lamb briyani, garlic naan, butter chicken and some dhal (takhor?) between 2 of us. Butter chicken slightly sweet for my liking, but loved the other 2 dishes. Friend thoroughly enjoyed all dishes. Definitely going back again!

Order chicken korma tonight and i swear i could of made better Indian from a pre-made sauce from the supermarket. The sauce had no flavour or spices, total waste of time. Sorry first and last time here. Agniti puts this place to shame - sorry guys!

Best indian in perth. This is amazing. its the average cost you would pay for a normal Indian you can get anywhere! Except this is value for money. Sadly my partner and i haven't ate int he restaurant yet, only had take away but every time the food is full of flavour and very fresh! it takes allot for me to write reviews, i'm not that way inclined. so for me to go out of my way to say "this is amazing" says something!
Top tips: Chicken tikka and butter chicken! i have never tasted such a rich and AMAZING butter chicken! Good work guys!

Standout service. The thing which allows this restaurant to rise above the other Indian restaurants we've been to around Perth is definitely the service, which was genuinely friendly and helpful. The food is awesome as well.

Fantastic Indian Restaurant. We return to this cosy little restaurant regularly. The ambience goes with the food and the staff are very friendly and efficient. (See if you can get the chef to do his 'party trick' where he will take orders from a table of any size and, get it correct, without any notes!)
The Chicken Tikka is a fantastic entree. The curries are wiithout peer, and can be made to any taste - mild to volcanic!
The Kashmiri Naan is a must try - fantastic accompaniment.

Friends.... A catchup review here as I've only recently discovered Urbanspoon. My family have developed a great relationship with the staff at this simple yet carefully prepared Indian restaurant. It is beautiful hearty fare, made with premium ingredients, and the tandoori prawns and beef korma are to die for (I defy you to try them and deny that they rock your world). Great people, beautiful (simple but comfortable) ambience, and consistency throught the roof, never had a bad meal here and eat here twice a month for years, even their poorest offering exceeds the standard fare of certain other indian restaurants in Perth, and it is an absolute must eat in Perth.

Friday night dinner on 27/05/2011. Hot prawn briyani, lots of prawns and spices. Great garlic naan. Nice creamy butter chicken, however, I nearly choked on a piece of metal stuck in one of the chicken pieces. The metal was from a kitchen scourer. We advised the waitress who apologized but did not do anything else about it.

My favourite restaurant in Perth!! We eat there once a month. The staff are friendly and attentive and remember our order from the last time, the food is great and always plentiful. Would recommend

An unexpected surprise. Although the staff seemed a little hit and miss at first, our order was perfect and the food matched the order. Great sizzling chicken! Would go back!

I thought the staff were very helpful an the food was great! We ordered the banquet (there were 5 of us) and we took about half of it home! So much great food!!

Not good. Arrogant staff, lousy food.

Sitting outside on the balcony, we took our time enjoying the food and the breeze from the river, only about 300 metres away. Bliss...

My parents had discovered this place so we decided to go there for my dad's birthday given he loves Indian food. In the past, most of the Indian restaurants I've eaten at have been disappointing. The Indian food my family cooks
