Chez Olivier is a place which has been on my list and when I finally found an opportunity to go, I seized it and booked it without Mr D knowing (my bad!). Located in South Yarra on the busy road of Toorak road, there’s quite a lot of foot traffic and if you’re driving there’s free side parking if you can nab a spot.

Went for a relaxed lunch on a Sunday. Classic french and every dish was great. Will be back for lunch another time and probably go for beef bourgignon next time..it looked fantastic!

Early Friday dinner with bestie at Chez Olivier. Classic French menu. Good seasoning for steak tartare. Beautifully cooked Tournedos Rossini. Juicy oysters and mussels. Tasty flamed crepes. And very friendly service:) Definitely will recommend to friends.

Back in Melbs and branching out from my usual brunch posts! And I have to say, this was probably the best dinner of my life.

We came to Chez Olivier for my mum’s birthday. I had the Fish Special: prosciutto wrapped barramundi with a celeriac veloute and asparagus. The celeriac veloute was PHENOMENAL - I licked the plate clean and looked up a recipe so I could try recreate the sauce at home. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals.

For dessert, we shared a creme brûlée and a tasting plate of 3 different desserts. The creme brûlée was faultless. The waiter torched the top of it right at the table, so the crispy coating cracked perfectly when you dug in. The tasting plate of 3 desserts was also excellent - ideal for the person who just can’t decide.

Surrounded by French wine bottles, music and servers, Chez Olivier has a charming atmosphere and is a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion.

Say bonjour to quintessentially French, indulgent cuisine at Chez Oliver Le Bistro in Prahran. Whilst I haven’t had that much French cuisine outside of actual France, my lunch at Chez Oliver easily transported me back to those bistros. The authentic smells, flavours and service will save you from booking a flight across the world.

Be transported to France whilst remaining in the heart of Melbourne. This restaurant has everything that a French cuisine lover could desire - cosy, Parisian surroundings, kind and attentive waiters, authentic French chefs and wonderful French food. The mussels and the sauce that they were cooked in were a highlight for me on my foodie adventures and this dish will be something I will always remember. Could not fault anything at this amazing restaurant and would recommend to anyone living in or travelling to Melbourne.

We had a very lovely evening at Chez Olivier, starting with the welcoming and attentive staff and the great range of food and dessert. Between four of us, we had the french onion soup, beouf bourguignon, cochon du jour (pork belly), possion du jour (pan fried snapper), magret du jour (duck breast), salade verte, 2 serves of crepes suzette and the vanilla bean creme brulee. The desserts were the stars of the night, but everything was delicious.

The beef was generous in size, very rich in taste and needed the side of salad greens to balance it out. The pork was tender and really tasty, served with grilled corn and polenta puree (I think). The duck was also tender but a touch overcooked on the ends, still a very enjoyable meal with its winter vegetables. The fish was served on top of a scrumptious amount of sauteed kale & capsicum slices (I like my veggies!)!

Definitely will come back to try the seafood bisque, the escargots, the goats cheese souffle, the lamb shanks, the chocolate fondant....you should get where I am coming from...

Beautiful food and ambience. The place was packed even on a Tuesday night, and we were lucky to bag a table for our party of 3. They were running a Tuesday special for scotch fillet and fries for $30, which I paired with a delicious seafood bisque for starters ($22). The steak was flavourful and tender, a delight with every bite. However while I loved the fresh seafood in the bisque I personally found it a tad too salty. Would go back again and try the mussels, they seemed to be a table favourite. Generous servings and authentic flavours, will definitely visit again if I’m in the area.

This is the first time I’ve been here and all I could say is the food is excellent and price wise is quiet decent and affordable. I wouldn’t high recommend here for a romantic night out anytime and will be back again soon

We ordered the DEGUSTATION menu and it was worth it.
MUST TRY: thick and creamy seafood soup

I enjoy coming here on special occasions and have done for years (when Olivier use to own it).  Its a nice cosy french restaurant for a romantic dinner and definitely my go to for french dining. Great option just off Chapel Street.

Pleasant sunny Sunday lunch. Opted for the lunch menu and added dessert.
The Camembert roti is amazing (very rich, we had it to share), beautiful onion soup.
For mains: the duck and the tuna specials were nice and the chicken was lovely too.
For dessert I think the profiteroles were the best value! Will be back 😊

Partner found this place because she loves French foods and patisserie.

The place may look small, but it has a nice setting and warm friendly vibe that brings you to France.
Our waitress was very patient and friendly while serving us, even when the floor was busy.

We’ve ordered Huitres (Fresh Oysters) for our entrees. Souris D’Agneau (Slow cooked lamb shank) and Entrecote (Black Angues Scotch Fillet) for our mains, and Tarte Tatin (Caramelised apple tart) for our dessert.

The oysters were a good starter with the red wine vinegar and shallot sauce. Really did the job opening our appetite for our meals.
For the Entrecote dish, the meat was well prepared (medium rare), and goes so well with the Béarnaise sauce and Smoked Potato. My partner’sSouris D’Agneau was amazing, meat was tender and the dish tasted sweet with its rosemary jus. The cinnamon zucchini and caramelised onion gave a nice touch to the meal. Very enjoyable.

Our Tarte Tatin was a great dessert to finish the night for us.
Not too sweet and just the right amount of rum for us to enjoy.

Would highly recommend this place, if you’re bringing your loved ones here and will be back to try the Degustation Menu.

Main things I remembered from my experience-

The best bit- the chocolate fondant has anchored to number one as my favourite chocolate fondant. I'd be back just to have this.

I shared the snails as entree. They were nice. I had the fish soup as my main. It was nice - but realized I'm not a French soup person- I prefer the Greek fish soup more.

The not so good bit - we were seated at the front sitting area. Our table was between two other tables. My back against another back. My partners back also against another back. The tables were sooo close that if I leaned on my chair, my back would be touching the guy behind me. I only got comfy when the other table next to my partner left. Finally able to move our table down a bit.

The venue is small but intimate. Food is 10/10, beautifully cooked. I recommend almost everything on the menu! Wine selections are decent for the venue size and the seats are nicely spaced apart, not at all crammed. The wait staff attentive. A very lovely venue.

The restaurant and food here definitely reminds me of Paris (with some Aussie hints). The staff is friendly, the decor is warm and cozy. The beef pie is very generous. The bread and cinnamon butter also a lovely surprise. The price is not particularly cheap but they do have weeknight deals.

Quality food. The steak tartare was delicious and the Tuesday evening steak frites - the black angus scotch fillet and crispy fries was excellent value for $25. Service was a bit hit and miss as there was essentially one waitress for the entire restaurant. The tarte tartin for dessert was also a winner.

Great place for a catchup with friends. The servers were efficient & friendly & all speak French which is an added bonus. The food was amazing. The Duck L'Orange was fantastic. The Gratin De La Mer was packed with flavor but needed bread to soak up the flavor which the waiter happily gave.

Came here for Friday lunch, it didn't appear too busy. Mains:
Cassoulet and Canard A L'Orange. The former was more your ordinary casserole dish. I really enjoyed the latter dish - duck wasn't dry and savoury flavours of the orange sauce went well with the meat, mash pumpkin was very smooth and creamy.
Desserts:
Tarte Tartin and Fondant Au Chocolat. Both were delightful. The apple in the Tarte Tartin was quite sweet making it better for those who prefer something extra sweet.
Today happens to be Bastille day, not sure if that was why there were helium balloon towards the ceiling but they were just lovely, the love locks also added a nice touch of romance. Service was polite and professional. Also it was nice of Matt to call after we left to let us know my partner left his glasses behind. Will be back after some time to try more of the menu.

Came here for dinner and started with escargot and seafood bisque. It was fantabulous - the seafood bisque is sort of an essence. Full of flavours with every mouthful. We reckon that the seafood bisque is a must.

I ordered Cassoulet and the husband ordered Canard Confit and both taste so good. We ended our meal with a creme brûlée and it was really good.

The ambience of this place is lovely. We will definitely come back for more lobster bisque!

Chez Oliver might look like a quaint little restaurant but it's hidden with many rooms. Ambience was great and it was a nice place for a quiet, romantic dinner.
The escargots were massive and the garlic butter sauce was an excellent dip to go with the side bread. I had the slow cooked duck as the main; it was not bad although the duck was slightly on the dry side. The dessert of the day was a lemon meringue tart, which was quite nice.
Service was attentive although the French man serving seemed to have a bit of a difficulty understanding us.

A pleasant dinner, but the food didn't blow me away or anything.

My fave dish was the definitely the escargot, which were garlicky and buttery perfection, but all the other dishes just weren't quite right. I thought my soup was a tad salty and my beef a little under, which slightly ruined the absolutely amazing truffle mushroom sauce. But I must admit, this is just my opinion, because my bf loved both dishes and thought the eye fillet was better on the rare side of medium rare.

Dessert was fantastic, after they remade my fondant. The first one was basically a muffin, it was so overcooked, I can't understand how it got sent out of the kitchen in the first place.

Service and wine was great, so overall a bit of a mixed bag for me.

Very good restaurant. Couldn't fault it. We had a lovely table upstairs by the window to celebrate my birthday. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't have to wait long to order or for our meals to come out. It was a very nice setting, good for a romantic dinner or family meal out. The meals weren't too expensive with a fair bit of variety to choose from. I had the beef bourguignon for main and the chocolate fondant for dessert. Definitely some of the best French food I've ever had outside of France.

We have been to Chez Olivier on several occasions over a period of time and have found, which is most refreshing, the quality of their food and service remains consistent and pleasing. A real French feel (yes, I have dined in France) to this lovely little bistro, including French waiters with a great attitude! Who can’t go past a wonderful soupe à l’oignon or their fabulous bisque de fruits de mer, a thick and creamy seafood soup?  They are onto something good and may it continue!

Chez Olivier was a terrific dining experience. Very little to fault about this place. Essential dishes are the Gambas au Pernod and the Beef Bourguignon, and if you're still feeling hungry get the Trio du Chef for dessert. All are impeccable.

Had the pleasure of dining at Chez Olivier for our wedding anniversary and I must say we were not disappointed! Both mine and my husband's entree (escargot and scollops) and main meals (duck breast and steak) were faultless. The wine list was comprehensive with a great selection of both French and Australian wines. Sevice was warm and friendly without being obsequious. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone - we will definitely be going back!!

Really quite outstanding Parisian fare, set in a suitably cramped terrace with bistro overlays.

Wine list is almost perfect. Not pretentious in length or headline acts, but a great selection of key French regions and styles, intermingled with Antipodean consolations.

Start with a chèvre filo parcel, with salad of micro leaves, walnuts and Serrano ham. Yum.

Then filet Mignon with peppercorn sauce, side of green beans and the most perfect frites.

Wife's escargots were laden with garlic and cream, whilst her chèvre soufflé main with cepes was delightful. Drizzle of truffle oil was nice if you like that kind of thing, but since I hate it, and it wasn't mentioned on the menu, means a 5.0 is only a 4.5.

The 2010 Gevrey Chambertain Pinot was lively, with red currants on the front palate.

The sliced baguette was sublime, but it was the butter laced with cinnamon that made my heart sing. Outstanding.

Dessert list had all the faves, but unfortunately our tums were full. The 5 x cheeses on offer were also the premiere list of delights. Alas.

Great tunes, funky wallpaper in the latrines, real Parisian waiters, Badoit (my fave) mineral water. It's got it all. But it's the butter we'll be back for - another level.

This is the second time I came for this French restaurant and it's still full house where booking is highly recommended. However, the food wasn't as nice as the last time. We decided on their degustation menu. I would say The price is very reasonable for a five course and we are very full. But the courses all taste very average and I wonder if the chef was changed. One of the mussel in my friend's seafood soup was not fully cooked ! This just shouldn't happen in an infamous French restaurant.

Okay, so there’s been a bit of a theme lately and we have to admit that there is a particular cuisine in which we have been frequenting more often than others, and that is French food! I personally have always loved French food so I have no problem with that. But it just so happened that we have been coming across some top quality restaurants in Melbourne. So without further ado we introduce Chez Olivier!

Located in Prahan, Chez Olivier is a cute little restaurant on Greville Street offering authentic French bistro food. As soon as you enter you are faced with a well equipped bar with friendly staff and small tables scattered around. We were then escorted to the back area with more tables and a fireplace. I loved the wooden decor, framed mirrors and chandeliers, giving it an intimate and romantic feel.

For starters we ordered the seafood bisque which was thick, creamy and full of seafood flavour. I’ve had a real liking to seafood bisques lately so really enjoyed this one. I also can never say no to a steak tartare when I see it on the menu so we also ordered that. It was 100g of finely chopped raw Black Angus beef with brandy sauce and the usual condiments. Mixed in with the raw egg yolk, it was delicious and seasoned well.

Davin decided to order one of the specials of the day for his main, which was the duck breast with balsamic vinegar sauce, pumpkin mash and puff potato. The duck was cooked to perfection – medium rare. Combined with the balsamic sauce and pumpkin mash, it was presented really nicely on the plate and tasted even better!

I ordered the 200g Black Angus eye fillet which was wrapped in proscuitto, with a slice of foie gras, mushroom sauce and white truffle oil served with mashed potato. It was sooo delicious! The foie gras literally just melted in my mouth. I reserved a bit for each bite of my steak. And the combination of the truffle oil and the creamy mashed potato was heaven.

There was quite a selection of dessert options after dinner, but we ended up on settling on the chocolate fondant to share which came with vanilla ice cream and strawberry coulis. The fondant was cooked well and lovely warm chocolate sauce oozed out, which is what you expect from a good chocolate fondant!

Overall, we really enjoyed our experience. The food was top quality, the ambience was great for a date night, and the staff were also very attentive and friendly. As usual we were probably the last ones there but they were more than happy to take dessert orders and there was no rush to get out. We will definitely keep this place in mind when we’re in the mood for French next time!

A very good French bistro. The service is efficient and totally french, which really helps make the experience more engrossing. 

The restaurant is nice inside. Not spacious, but cosy and charming. The food is excellent. Entrees were traditional selections:  escargot and beef tartare. I loved both - snails were really tender (and I often find french restaurants serving rubbery snails, but Chez Olivier got them right). The flavour of the beef tartare was sensational. I really like that they chop the meat into tiny pieces rather than serve it minced.

The confit of duck main was cracking, My companion had the cheese souffle and that was utterly divine. 
Impressed over all. Cocktails were good. Prices were spot on given the location, restaurant and quality. Will return and make it a regular.

Good food, friendly France speaking staffs. Entree was selection was good, we had the Beef Tartare, it was one of the best that I had eaten. The texture was fluffy like tuna sashimi, the flavour was well balance with mild kick of capes and herbs. Bursting the egg York gave a a burst of satisfaction. Oh... The bread and freshly made butter... The best butter! BUTTER OH BUTTER.

Cosy and intimate venue, attentive hosts, and a satisfying feed. We shared entrees of prawns and the foie gras terrine, followed by coq au vin and duck confit for mains. Good portions and delicious all round. Finished up with a trio of mini desserts, also yum.

What an amazing meal we had. The soup was sensational and quite authentic french onion soup. The cassoulet was delish and confit duck also as scrumptious. Dessert of the trio of mini plates was a perfect happy ending. The bistrot itself had a great atmosphere. Definitely recommend!

Wonderful French dining experience!
Gorgeous venue and setting; lovely waitstaff.
So many options on the menu - it was hard deciding! Even being coeliac, there are many gluten free options.
We enjoyed the baked Camembert to start, for mains we had confit duck with potato and chestnuts and barramundi in a very French sauce (I can't remember what exactly!), a side of lovely green beans with garlic and for dessert the creme brûlée and a merengue in custard with almonds and caramel; divine!
Great selection of wines, cocktails and mocktails (loved the St Germain with elderflower and lemon; so refreshing!)

Had lunch here. The best lunch experience we ever had, waiter was very attentive. Amazing taste. Must try the steak Baguette, the combination of caramelised onion and mustard is just brilliant, and of course the beef is just tender, juicy and tasty.

Chez Olivier is not your normal Restaurant. If busy, expect to be treated as an annoying interruption to the managers very important evening. Personnel are twitchy and easily offended if you haven't booked, but I still can't seem to book by phone ( my preferred method to get the table I want), clunky internet scene, and they are very cool with walk ins." Last time I tried, I just walked out. Now I only accompany some friends who are regulars.

Last night we were served outstanding dishes, onion soup, mussels, roast duck, lamb shank, all better than good. But it was not an excellent meal. We were ignored for 3/4 hour and not even offered drinks service. The meal was another hour. We enquired after our meal (pleasantly) on two occasions, each time we were “snapped” by the manager (and my friends were regulars and I am an irregular going back over 3 years.)
On leaving, very late, the manager asked if we enjoyed our meal. I said it was outstanding, however the long waits for service and food we’re disappointing. She commenced a tirade of “her point of view”, again, not usual, particularly given the money we have laid on her business over the years. She had a function upstairs. TMI.

In summary, excellent menu, excellent food, poor seating, patchy service, poorly led staff and a management “attitude”. I have downgraded my review and rating from 4 (June 2016) to 3.5 (Oct 2017).

Oh yes. It’s BYO. But you can tell they are not really happy about this. High corkage and, pointedly, no drinks service at all. Not like Frans Soir and Chez Bob who provide appropriate glasses for each wine variety you bring, and pour the wine.

My friends and I decided to check out this place to see why it's so popular and it was a right decision.

We came quite early for dinner. We were seated down by very friendly smiley staff. Good start.

We kicked it off with some sparkling water and got a bottle of Beaudeux Carbenet Sauvignon which was smooth as silk. Food was absolutely delicious. Foie gras and filet mignon were outstanding. The steak were perfectly cooked and the peppercorn sauce was superb, compliment to the chefs. Presentation was simple but visually pleasant. Dessert was also a hit for me. And may I say, creme brûlée here is the best I have had in Melbourne.

Waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive. Overall experience was great and we'd love to come back for more.

邻家小馆的感觉,店很老很传统,中午只有一位服务生和一位厨师,一进店门就闻到一股「菜味」,菜单都是最传统的法餐,味道也很家常,处处都显示出「在家吃饭」的感觉。

The restaurant next door. Everything here makes you feel like dining at home. Traditional dishes with traditional tastes.

Chez Olivier- authentic French cuisine on greville st. Had an amazing dinner with friends, tried authentic French delicacies and devoured French deserts. Attentive and friendly staff without being intrusive. Relaxed atmosphere and very nice decor- I'll definitely be back, had a gr8 night.

An amazing dining experience! I can't sing enough praises for the beef tartare and the delicious snails. The flavours were fantastic. A great place for an intimate dinner.

Romantic French restaurant with Devine food

This restaurant impressed us from the moment we arrived. The complimentary bread with cinnamon butter is to die for.

We started with the salmon rillettes on blinis with smoked salmon & balsamic glaze. The blini was quite thick & perhaps a touch dry but still delicious.

The fish of the day was a beautifully presented fillet of salmon in a rich sauce. The black angus eye fillet wrapped in prosciutto served with a slice of foie gras, mushroom sauce and white truffle oil with potato mash was also delicious.

They have an extensive dessert menu but we couldn't go past the chocolate fondant. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Chez Olivier locates at busy district in Prahran. It's a very compact restaurant and we had a chance sat on level 2 close to the window overlooking the busy street. Service was good, attendants spoken English with French accent, which bought you into the French dining environment straight away. For entries, we had Escargots, Gambas and Foie Gras. I always thought escargots were a bit chewier, but they are pretty soft. Gambas had a very good sauce accompanied with prawns. Foie Gras was very good, however the flavour actually over-powered by the bread accompanied. For main, both Agneau Jour and Boeuf Bihrguignon were very tender and melted in mouth straight away. Duck confit was very rich flavoured, the fat ran though the entire meat. Salmon was very good accompanied with creamy sauce, Boudin Blanc was a type of sausage. The Gratine De La Mer was a bit too sweet and a bit bitter which was a let-down after we had so many delicious dishes. Luckily we ordered dessert trio to make up with it. Overall it was a very good experience!

It's been many years since we last visited Chez Olivier. A modern take on French classics, we were particularly impressed by the beautiful presentation of the dishes. Standouts were the duck breast of the day and beef bourgignon. Tasty, true flavours, complemented by pleasant service from the young staff.

By far my favourite French restaurant in Melbourne! I come here at least once a year! The service is impeccable and the food fantastic every time! The waiters are all traditionally French and make you feel welcome and ensure that you're having a great dining experience. The wine list is fantastic and sometimes a bit overwhelming so the waiters are also excellent at providing suggestions. The food is divine! Came here last weekend and we ordered
-steak tartare - so delicious and easy to eat. Initially I never thought I would like the concept of steak tartare until I came here and tried it here and now is a staple of my ordering here at chez Olivier.
- canard à l'orange - amazing every time. The meat melts in your mouth and the base is just the perfect compliment to the flavour palate.
- magret du jour- the one on this day was cooked with peas and corn and again was a fantastic example of excellent French cooking.
-crème brûlée for dessert - it is never disappointing here! Ever!!!
I rarely order this now from other places because I'm usually disappointed! So for a crème brûlée you cannot fault make sure you get it here!
I will definitely be coming back I have been doing so for years! Amazing!! As a lover of French food this restaurant is the French restaurant I always recommend to people!

Just tried the new venue. Still the same wonderful food and outstanding service.

I love the new look and the new venue. So much easier to park.

Wonderful food, great wine list. The service is good but I think the ambience is dependent on which area you are seated in. We were upstairs in the front room which was less refined than other areas. Go for the food, it's exceptional.

There should be more places like this, they have thoughtfully considered the presentation and attended to the details of each course. I had the duck of the day which was served with crispy polenta chips and a delightful poached pear. Staff excellent, attentive but not intrusive.

Every bite was melt in your mouth good. From the starter of house baked bread to the canard confit main. Every mouthful was a pleasure to indulge. 160 for two, two entrees and mains with a mid range bottle of w8ne. Intimate atmosphere allows for ease of conversation, well educated wait staff and food that tastes as if a specialist of each type of meat has prepared it to optimum specifications. Well worth the mid to upper range price tag.

Had an amazing meal at this bistro last night. The food was of a very high quality. The steak tartare was probably the best I've eaten outside of France, not that I've eaten many outside of France. The confit duck was delicious, it pulled away from the bone just as to be expected. The ratatouille was finer in style than I would have expected, more of a bruschetta mix than a peasants assortment of vegetables but still delicious.
The only slight complaint we could have had was that we just needed a few more minutes to contemplate the menu. The staff were a bit too keen to take our order.
We payed with a citibank credit card and received a complimentary bottle of very high quality. Thank you!

Walking out of the restaurant in a food coma is what every foodie wants and this place definitely gives you that. It was my first time trying a visiting this restaurant and let me just say I came out with a big smile. For the entree and main I tried the specials which were Salmon of the day and Lamb of the day. The salmon (in rillettes and actual pieces) were served on top of pancakes with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing which was simply stunning. As for my sister she tried goats cheese filled pastry with salad and proscuitto. The pastry was crispy and butter and the goats cheese and proscuitto combo was just amazing. And the salad accompaniment perfectly balanced the rich taste that was delivered by the pastry and proscuitto. For mains, i ordered lamb cutlets with truffle polenta and my sister had the crumbed ratatouille. Both mains were just divine- lamb cooked perfectly as requested and all the ingredients tasted amazing when combined. The rataouille was perfect where even carnivores like us demolished this plate. I would definitely turn vegetarian if my meals are cooked like this.  In addition, we ordered a few cocktails and you can request for certain drinks if it's not listed on the menu. I requested a martini and unlike some places where you can't really taste the gin, this place made it just strong enough to get the night started :)Up until described the everything was just amazing however it went south from here when we hit desserts. Unfortunately, it did not match the high level of expectations that we had, given that both entrees and mains were mouth-watering. That's not to say it was terrible but it was standard and it's just like what you get from other french places. I would definitely come back to this place however only for the savoury stuff.

Classy, sophisticated, old fashioned, country-living styled food. I've never been to France, but the minute I ate here, I knew it was an accurate reflection of the real deal. In particular, the gratin de la mer (seafood cognac stew) is to die for! Such weird flavours - and I mean that in the best way possible.

A French friend took me here, stating that this was one of the better French restaurants around Melbourne and who am I to argue.
She also selected our meals, skipping the entrees and ordered me the Steak Tartare.
Quite the experience, kind of like making the burger pattie and just eating it with an egg on top. Don't think I need to try that again.
For dessert, she got me the Poire Belle Hélène, just spoilt me silly with this kind of lux.
Very fond chocolate memories.

Had dinner here last night and had been recommended by friends to try Chez Oliver, bonus it was in the entertainment book as well.Very cosy place, not loud at all so it's perfect for date night.Staff was friendly and tentative all throughout the night. We ordered the degustation menu and wasn't disappointed at all. Our first time trying escargot and was pleasantly surprised as to how much we enjoyed it. the foie gras was to die for and loved how almost every dish came with bread so you could enjoy all the sauces. We were left at the end of the night with smiles on our faces and our belly's all full.Highly recommend Chez Oliver and we'll definitely be back to try their lunch menu.

Went here for my boyfriend's birthday. Amazing staff! Very attentive waitress as she offered to put sparkles and happy birthday writing for my boyfriend in the dessert we are going to order. My favorite french restaurant ever! Ordered the oysters and escargots for starters. All great! Ordered the roasted duck with orange sauce for main. Generous portion and taste amazing. Will definitely come back.

Partner took me here on my birthday and they had a white rose on my napkin and petals around the table. It was extremely good effort on the restaurants part in doing that.

We had the escargot, duck with orange sauce and pumpkin mash, boeuf bourguignon, side of chips and tarte tatin. Everything was beautifully executed. I couldn't and wouldn't ask for anything more of this place.

CHARMING PLACE, FRENCH CLASSICS WELL PREPARED -- Chez Oliver feels and looks like a real Parisian bistro. It is woody, cozy, welcoming and unpretentious.  Their menu is a mix of French classic favourites.

I had their menu special, two dishes for 28 bucks, plus 7 bucks more for a glass of wine. For an entree I  had the French Onion soup, which was earthy, aromatic, the sweetness of the onion perfectly balanced by the herbs and condiments used.  For the main I had the lamb casserole with cut green beans, carrots and dollops of mash potato, which was flavoursome and the meat very tender and melted in my mouth; the serving portion was medium, so perfect for lunch. The house Shiraz was also lovely. What a great lunch!

The bread and butter offered as a snack were really good and they tasted very good; I loved the rustic Himalayan-sort-of salt on offer as well.

The waiter who attended to me was really lovely and attentive. 

As downsides, the soup was served too hot, and no plate was put on my table to rest my bread and butter it.

Great restaurant - especially if it's a cold/wintery night. We ordered the melted Camembert with roti for entree, main was bœuf bouringnong with a side of mash. We had 2 beers & a wine and it came to $138 without entertainment book discount, with was $103. The waiters are genuinely French and the restaurant is on the small side and has a bit of a European feel. Unfortunately were out of oysters so we had to change our entree. Overall good experience and will return.

I adore this bistro. It has such a cosy Parisian feel. The complimentary bread and butter...oh my goodness the butter is divine! Beautiful duck dishes and a lovely wine list. Not to mention the simple but classic French desserts! I tried the Creme Brûlée and it did not disappoint.
Prices are not cheap but it is a fine dining French establishment so it is to be expected. A great place to go for a special occasion.

I had the pleasure of dining at Chez Olivier last night. My expectations were high but I was let down by the poor quality of produce and detail in the food. Overall, I did not feel like this was a traditional French restaurant, but instead, an Australian interpretation. For the price I paid, I expected much more.

A friend highly recommended Chez Olivier and I have to say they did not disappoint. The food was great, the service whilst they seemed a bit overwhelmed the night we were there was really good too. I messed up my booking due to changing schedules and they accommodated us as best possible. Really glad we picked this bistro for our milestone anniversary dinner.

Very Good! I believe that the chef is French because it is one of the few restaurants in Melbourne where the food actually tates Like French food - no spicy food here! 😜 The environment is lovely. For solo travellers, it is actually one of those places where you can have a dinner alone without feeling lonely. Try sitting at the bar!🤩

Service was great, ambiance was ok too. The steaks and the sauce although looked very good could be much better. I ordered medium rare and all around the cut was burnt to a charcoal which for a $40-50 dish is not ok. The desert looked really good and tasted ok.

Staff were good but they got a bit too busy and everyone seemed to be confused (e.g. we just ordered then a different waitress came around and asked what we want 😅). Overall, food were excellent! As everyone knows, French food is quite heavy so just be cautious that you can get really full easily.

The best French dining experience I have had in a very long time. We wanted to do something special for my partner’s birthday. We settled on Chez Olivier and we are so glad we did. Fabulous authentic French cuisine. Exceptional quality. Wonderful value. Superb atmosphere and exceptional staff. Every element of our visit made it a special night to remember. We will be back for sure.
