We had the best time at Rock Sugar. The food was incredible, the cocktails were to die for. The friendly staff were excellent and made us feel so welcome. We will be definitely coming back again for sure, can't recommend this place enough.
This is modern Thai food at its finest. The melt-in-your-mouth beef ribs are must, as are the cocktails. Every.Single.One.Of.Them. I can't do super spicy food, and that green curry was perfect to my taste. I got the best advice from my waitress - order rice with it, because life is too short not to soak up every bit of that curry sauce.
The best Thai place I have been. The waitress advise on menu selection was on point to what our non spicy pallet was. I recommend to everyone who wants an unbelievable experience
Incredible - Must try. Best Asian fusion in town . The snapper and beef cheek were to die for, as was the crab salad and chicken ribs! Yum
Best Thai food I've had since I got back from Thailand 9 months ago! They have a modern twist on traditional Thai food and it is so yummy! The service was great and it was very easy to find parking. The pork belly and green curry are definitely a must, as are the fairly floss martinis for a little bit of fun. Overall, this was great place and can't wait to return!
What an amazing experience we had everything was on point from the food to the helpful staff will be back again ! amazing menu
Rock .... Sugar ..... Melbourne .... wow went in there for one drink around 10:30 as I was heading home.. what great staff!! All the ladies in the bar were fun, witty and mind you couldn't reach a bottle of spirits on the top shelf and I thought I was getting a remake of coyote ugly on the bar. Fantastic ladies!! Will be coming back for a dinner soon!!
Best fairy floss martini ever! And the best barman ever! When in Melbourne you must visit this place! It's one of s kind!!!
So impressed that they have SEPARATE allergy/intolerance menu! The staff were great and so helpful and accommodating. And most of all the food was great! Will definitely be back regularly
Such a cool little place... 🍸amazing cocktails and the most delicious Thai food..! Staff were terrific so friendly cool and accommodating! Will definitely be back👌🏻🍸
We had an amazing evening at Rock Sugar, the fabulous girls helped us with the menu selection & the food was awesome, oh & the cocktails ...
A group of us had the taster menu for $50 and there was soooo much food. Highlights were definitely the curries and the chicken ribs. Looking forward to going back already!
The feed me menu was amazing and filling, the cocktails were fun and tasty, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere was fun and funky, the owners and staff should be very proud of themselves!
Great food, great atmosphere, great service, great vibe.
Such a great atmosphere with my favourite old school RNB on Saturday night! Food was amazing! lovely twisted from traditional Thai food, fresh and delicious.
Staffs are very friendly and know their menu very well.
Will definitely keep going back there
Loved the entire selection of food as recommended by our waitress, especially enjoyed the Pink Martini.
Hankering to return to this impossibly cool yet completely uncontrived gastronomic delight. It redefines Thai food and leaves all other Thai eateries lacking in its wake. The staff are as fun and inviting as the fairy floss martinis. It is the ultimate feel good place and I look forward to my next visit to Melbourne just so I can sample some more of its wonder. Thank you !

This fusion restaurant located on the busy road, and sell an inexhaustible list of food with their twist on classic Thai and Asian dishes. Its vibrant neon-lit modern decor will go unnoticed as a bystander, so I highly recommend to visit this restaurant.
Despite a big group of friends, staff managed to sit us down but it was quite squishy to move around. They were a bit cold to our table while we would order and take photos, affecting our visit for a friend's birthday.
We ordered so many dishes I can't remember everything exactly, but I thoroughly enjoyed:
- pork belly steamed baos
- betel leaf rolls
- lamb and potato spring rolls
- massaman beef curry
Overall, we ordered mainly singles and small shared dishes and most were tasty.
I loved how soft and fluffy the steam buns were whilst the pork belly was so juicy and crispy. In addition, these baos were made up of pineapple, chilli jam and other unusual condiments which brightened up the flavour of the bao. The soft shell crab bao may have been a bit dry, but quite tasty.
The betel leaf is always my favourite kind of bite despite the hefty price, but this one bite met my standards for an explosion of flavour of freshness, sweetness and umami.
The lamb and potato spring rolls are an easy finger food which are made so well here at Rock Sugar, and would definitely recommend to share.
Some mains were okay, but the one dish I remember was the Massaman Beef Curry. Till this day, the aroma still tickles in my nose. The curry was rich in spices and the particular Thai herbs and seasoning proved it to be a true classic. The star of the curry was the perfectly cooked 18 hour slow-cooked angus, which melted in the mouth so easily and was full of flavour.
Prices felt unreasonable for some dishes, some being too small to enjoy the flavour, a bit dry or cold.
Drinks are definitely a hit here, with its beautiful creations that can get your jaw dropping and your mouth sipping till you're tipsy.
I wish we could order more although we had already, and will definitely come back to try their other mains and sides, as well as their funky drink options!
Loved it here and will definitely be back. Some a great vibe as soon as you walk in with the neon lights and decor.
We ordered (for 2 people) prawn betel leafs, pork belly steamed bun and sriracha butter corn on the cob. These all tasted amazing, especially the prawn betel leafs. Great flavour.
For the main we had the rocking fried chicken, massaman curry, steamed brocolli and roti. The roti came with a small dip which tasted amazing. The massaman curry tasted great, the beef was very tender.
Also tried one of the cocktails, the salted caramel mocha martini which came with toasted marshmallows. Once again, amazing flavour and a really good size.
Everything was incredible! Highly recommend! Very happy and satisfied
Such a fun restaurant with a great vibe. Be prepared for a lot of food on the feed me menu! The cocktail buckets are delicious.
Definitely returning. Great atmosphere with friendly staff. Chicken ribs are amazing. Tried the kingfish and dumplings as well. Amazing.
Lovely restaurant! Good fun atmosphere, nice outdoor area as well as restaurant area. Very helpful staff. Nice good. Roti & eadame both disappointing but the more complex dishes so good! Lamb rice paper rolls, pork belly & cauliflower salad all stand outs. The fact you can book is also fabulous!
Rock Sugar is a very modern, trendy spot for dinner with the neon lights making it very instagrammable. But more than that, the food is actually great too.
My friend ordered the Sesame Rice Crackers, which is not something I'd order usually, but I was surprised how moorish they were! The Lamb Spring Rolls were great, loved the flavour of the coconut cream with it. We also had the Crumbed Eggplant which was quite different to any eggplant dish that I'd had before. It was so crunchy and served with the pumpkin puree, the textures were great. The fried chicken ribs were 5/5 also.
By this time we were too full for dessert sadly! Probably because we decided to share a cocktail bucket as well.
I'd definitely recommend Rock Sugar as a good place to catch up with friends before a night out or just when in the South Yarra area!
A nice trendy restaurant with indoor and outdoor courtyard seating.
Firstly we started off with the Fairy floss martini in peach. Nice, creative and sweet.
Tofu rice cracker has the crispiest cracker with the silkiest tofu with neoc nam sauce. Careful of the chillis as theyre quite spicy.
Sriracha butter corn on the cob. The juiciest and sweetest corn i've bitten into that . Perfectly paired with the shaved parmesan cheese and the dip compliments.
Sticky pork belly- sweet as honey and meat is so tender it just breaks apart. The sauce is perfect and pairs well with the cracker.
Warm cauliflower salad - looks simple but it's so flavourful. A mountain on roasted cauliflower that is paired with a thick layer of parmesan cheese and slices of thin spring onion.
Overall, a good experience and great place for lunch!
The food here is delicious! I had a mixture of items and none of them disappointed. I especially enjoyed the soft shell crab bun and the main size pork belly! The only thing I didn’t love were the cocktails. I had the fairy floss one and my boyfriend had the toasted marshmallow one. Although they were nice to look at, unfortunately both of them seemed bland in comparison to similar priced cocktails I’ve had at other restaurants. All in all though the food was delicious and the service was amazing...I’d definitely come back!
My partner and I had a great experience at Rock Sugar, not only were the food and drinks great, but the service was what topped it off.
Was able to make a last minute booking on Saturday night for a friends birthday and did not disappoint. Food lacks flavour and the pung thai food is but overall very good “fusion”. Cocktails were fantastic
Rock Sugar is definitely one you need to pay a visit to if you enjoy Thai food. Their menu is on trend - lots of pick from if you are looking for a light starter, something to share or are peckish for a dessert or cocktail. Brownie point for their menu outlining in bold text which items have peanuts in them. This is a great preventative measure for someone like myself who sadly has an allergy so I thank you for that! 🙏🙏
We dined on the calamari (sadly a tad over cooked) but the curries are DIVINE! You can’t beat either the green curry or massaman - the beef in the massaman was cooked to perfection; just melts in your mouth with the sauce complimenting nicely. The green curry was well received as well, lots of chicken (which with most places don’t have very much) and the asparagus and eggplant beautifully cooked.
Finally for dessert was the mango panna cotta with cookie crumb and omg yum. Normally I don’t do a panna cotta but this was a lovely and light dessert for even the fullest of stomachs.
The staff and chefs were lovely throughout our service. Will come back for sure.

Superb, couldnt of asked for a better Father’s Day lunch, they are very accommodating of children, the food is sensational and the staff are well versed in all the food on the menu, great flavours.
We will be back
We really enjoyed our experience here. We didn’t make a booking for 2 - so we were seated at the bar tables which wasn’t too bad. We absolutely LOVED their cocktails! Every single one was a hit. If you love sweeter cocktails this place is for you, however they do have a variety and not all of them are super sweet. My favourite was definitely the passion fruit/caramel one! As for food we were pretty pleased and everything we ordered was quite tasty. Only thing we will say is that the pork belly wasn’t that great! Aside from that - we we’re super happy with our dining experience, the vibe was great, not too intense with the crowds, staff were great... we will be back!
Dined for dinner. We shared the pork belly steamed buns, ocean trout betel leaf, lamb spring rolls, massaman curry & coconut rice. All our meals were delicious. Friendly service. Enjoyed the music but a little too loud, especially as we were seated right next to the speaker? Overall enjoyable night out.
Stepping into Rock Sugar, you are transported into a world of pink neon lighting, setting the scene for a great dining experience. With an array of cocktails to choose from, starting off the night in style is not difficult. The #rocksugar martini is a winner for those who like something sweeter.
Although there are vegan options available throughout all courses, I was a little disappointed by the range of options. Everything vegan (aside from edemame and crackers) seemed to be based around tofu, which didn't provide much variety. The only feedback I would have is that management look to bring the same creativity to vegan options as they do to the rest of the menu.
In saying that, the yellow curry and spicy tofu that I had was very tasty. Great experience all round :)
I had a really good time in Rock Sugar. Flavour in the food were all very well balanced, and great customer service. Would definitely come back here again.
Such a fun spot. Outstanding cocktails, food and tunes. Hands down the best Thai I've had in a while. Portions are great too. Will be back for sure
Underwhelming cocktails, delicious food. Nice atmosphere but it was a little annoying having people rushing past and feeling a bit cramped. Overall an enjoyable experience :)
I was invited to Rocksugar for another rocking good time. We were loving the singles menu, a tuna tartare and smoked ocean tour betel leaf for me and steamed soft shell crab bun for hubby. I enjoyed my small little bites which led on perfectly to the massaman spring rolls that we order every time without fail. They were a bit stingy on the sauce this time and the sauce is what makes it but they were still delicious.
Couldn't go past the fairy floss martinis or #rocktail as they refer to them which definitely has novelty factor with the liquid being served in a beaker that you self pour into the glass over the fairy floss to dissolve the sugar. I think the value for money is there considering the atmosphere and on trend fusion Asian offerings.
Update
I was invited back to RS and was intrigued to try some different dishes. $100 gets you a banquet for 2 but we chose to order a la carte given it was our third visit. I do appreciate the fact that they have bespoke gf, vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian banquet options- very inclusive indeed.
Hubby wanted the massaman curry and I have to say it was improved on our original visit. With the meat ratio vastly increased. What I really wanted to try where the desserts given we hadn’t indulged previously. We made up for it on this occasion ordering both the mango coconut panna cotta and the bounty donut bun. I enjoyed both of these dishes and the panna was a lovely light refreshing way to finish. It definitely continues to impress
Second visit
I was intrigued to be invited to Rock Sugar as it’s been over a year since my first and only visit and I wanted to eat those delicious lamb spring rolls again. The ambiance is as electric as ever and that goes for the neon signage too. They also play awesome music which really sets the tone for a fun night out.
I decided to try a new dish this time (the food menu is absolutely unchanged from my initial dining experience) and went for the beef cheek. This was a very tender meat paired with chilli coconut cream and pomelo. I loved the freshness of the pomelo but didn’t get even the slightest hint of chilli (which actually suits me fine as I don’t like spicy food).
Overall, it definitely remains one of the modern and on trend places to see and be seen
Original review
Headed to Rock Sugar last night on Valentines Day after previously attempting to go on a Sunday late last year (they are closed on Sundays- why??) and I'm feeling pretty mixed about it. One of the smallest restaurants I've been in you are literally seated at the tiniest spot conceivable and encouraged to put the water bottle etc on the ledge on the wall to save space.
It’s Melbourne's latest Thai restaurant positioned to take on the Botherambo's of the world (they have their ex head chef onboard) offering two hour sittings. Crispy prawn betel leaf was interesting texturally being deep fried rather than fresh and had a punchy dipping sauce. Coconut rice lacked flavour and the massamum curry of 18 hour beef shin could have done with some more meat in it.
Chicken and prawn dumplings needed a dipping sauce as they were quite bland in flavour but the saltbush spring rolls with coconut cream were magnificent. Corn on the cob was kind of Mexican style so not sure where the Asian influence was on that one but still delicious.
I also felt like I was being zoomed out the door despite the fact that we eat super fast anyway and would have been done in less than an hour (food comes out EXTREMELY speedily too). Overall; style but as for substance not so much
Funky South Yarra Thai restaurant Rock Sugar is the place to go for stunning cocktails and delicious Thai food!. Food: Spring Rolls, Lamb Steamed Bun, Tofu Steamed Bun, Grilled Eggplant, Cauliflower Salad, Massaman Curry, Mocktails. The details…. While it’s a little out of the way from the main hub of Chapel Street, it’s this that helps add to Rock Sugar’s charm (also the ability to park without lapping the block 30 times is a nice plus). Visit at lunch time to enjoy chilled out lazy lunches, or head on down for dinner for some fun, funky Thai food and delicious cocktails.
Rock Sugar is located on Malvern Road in South Yarra. With a funky fitout & lots of neon, it’s a fun place for dining but pretty tough if you’re taking photos. My friend was invited to try the menu & I tagged along for support.
With an impressive cocktail list, that’s where we started. My friend had the Blue Bird which was served in a bubble tea cup & included sake, vodka, lychee & lychee bubbles. I ordered the Rockstar Martini which was a sensational cocktail, vanilla vodka, passionfruit purée, housemade caramel & lime. Sounds like an odd combination but the flavours worked together brilliantly & loved the half passionfruit floating on top.
The menu is modern Thai with share dishes & nibbles. We shared a range of dishes, some better than others but we both enjoyed the sriracha buttered corn on the cob & the pork belly bao were delicious.
For dessert, the Spice up your Life was a winner. Bounty ice cream in a donut bun with chocolate iced magic & coconut flakes, a tasty combination that didn’t last long.
A fun venue with cocktails as the main attraction & a good range of sharing dishes to go with the cocktails. Thanks for having us in.
Yummy in my tummy. Amazing Thai food 👌🏻 we ordered the Bao and the Coconut rice and they were simply amazing. Absolutely loved the neon signs too 😁
Easily one of the best restaurants I've been to in years! Amazing cocktails, amazing twist on thai cuisine, amazing staff and amazing vibe! Would highly recommend the 'Red Velvet' and 'Elderflower Power' cocktails to accompany some #rocking fried chicken ribs and chicken and prawn dumplings. Cannot fault this place. I will most definitely be back.
Rockout with your cocktails out!
Prior to this visit, I went to Rock Sugar in the past for a friend’s birthday do, it was a fun experience – my non-foodie friends enjoyed the cocktails and nibbles. There is a good vibe to this place, they have some great music that leans to a younger market that likes to go out and have a fun time.
Rock Sugar is on the quiet end of Malvern Road, so to the untrained eye, you would think it’s residential and posh art galleries, but alas, there is a little gem called Rock Sugar – that people know of, but you wouldn’t necessarily walk past if you’re not in the area.
The venue is tight, so the tables of 2 are around the bar or by the wall. So for a better experience you’re better off going as a group. I was invited to try a few things.
The cocktails is why you come to Rock Sugar. I had my cocktail in a bubble tea cup and my friend had the Rockstar Martini in a proper glass which as the far superior choice in terms of taste. The passionfruit puree and caramel worked well with the vodka and lime. The Blue Bird in the bubble tea cup was fun to try.
The food offerings are asian-fusion eclectic. With any menu that is varied, there are hits and misses. I enjoyed the pork belly pineapple baos and the corn. I’d skip the roti and satay sauce. The dessert offering I had to choose because it’s named after a Spice Girls song ‘Spice Up Your Life’ which is great to share. The menu definitely complimented the cocktail offerings.
All in all, there is a great modern vibe to Rock Sugar with great cocktails and some decent nibbles that edge on fusion. The “Feed Me” menu is reasonably priced and something that I’d be keen to do next time I’m here.
4* for the cocktails and the ambiance.
Rocking Sugar is rocking modern thai restaurant located in South Yarra. We were lucky to be invited to try out this fusion restaurant bar. The venue may look small from the outside, but down towards the end, there is a function room. The restaurant is decorated with bright pink neon lights which creates the rocking mood. Rocking Sugar is popular for its spectacular range of cocktails. I was contemplating of whether to get the Rocking Frose or the popular Fairy Floss Martini. We ended up trying the Rocking Frose and Thai Tommy's margarita after some general advice from the staff, who were very friendly and tried to find the right cocktail to suit our taste buds.I highly recommend the Frose. As i'm more a sweet person, the lychee and strawberry gave it a very sweet taste.
For starters, we had the fried chicken ribs and hiramasa king fish. Definitely try out their ribs, it was dellliccccious!!! Unlike the typical fried ribs that are covered with layers of batter, Rocking Sugar's ribs not only didn't have that layered batter taste but it was fried perfectly, crispy & tender paired with 2 unique sauces, a sweet chilli red nam jim and sweet mayo.
For mains, we ordered the massaman curry and beef cheeks. The massaman curry was served with an 18hour beef shin which was tender. The curry was creamy and flavoursome. I think we enjoyed the curry so much that we had to order 2 more bowls of rice and roti. The beef cheeks were very tender and filling. The portions of the food were perfect.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time at Rocking Sugar and it was quite sad we didn't have quota to try out more of their fabulous and pretty cocktails as we were too full from the delicious foods. Definitely recommend Rock Sugar!
We had a fantastic night out at Rock Sugar South Yarra. From the incredible old school hits, to the amazing cocktails and food, it was all superb! The lamb spring rolls were so good we ordered an extra serve and one take away. King fish was so fresh, perfect share plate for all sashimi lovers. The staff were so sweet and attentive. Can't wait to come back.
This place “Rocks”!! The food is actually to die for and the drinks are so so so good. Music and vibe is so cool and the staff are so lovely and accommodating.

Very modern take on Thai cuisine. The food was all above average, quite delicious, but I wouldn’t say it’s very authentic. If you’re looking for some Thai food with a speakeasy kind of vibe, this is perfect. The ambience is great, for small and large groups. Service is also wonderful.
Would recommend the scallops and baby snapper!
Rock Sugar is a modern and neon-lit restaurant serving Thai food with a cheeky sense of humour. Indulge in Asian fusion cuisine and amazing cocktails loosely inspired by Thailand such as their infamous Phi-Phi buckets. Pictured is their oysters and it’s refreshing!
Another fusion restaurant to put on your list! A modern thai restaurant located on Malvern road in South Yarra. We visited on a Thursday night and was surprised to see how busy it was on a weekday, this meant the food was going to be good! We were lucky to be invited to check out this unique restaurant.
We ordered a selection of the betel leaf dishes, pork belly, king fish ceviche and fried chicken.
The betel leaf entrees were definitely unique and tasty but it might of been nicer to see more on the plate for $7.
The ceviche was fresh and the condiments perfectly complemented the dish and brought out its freshness.
The fried chicken was the usual fried chicken but the special sauces was unique and nothing every goes wrong when theres fried chicken.
The highlight was the pork belly main dish with a fresh side salad and extra pork crackling on the side! The pork was super tender and tasty.
We also ordered their popular fairy floss cocktail. Unfortunately it tasted more life medicine but definitely a very unique style of cocktail.
We loved the vibe of this place and the staff were friendly and attentive.
Rock Sugar is a modern Thai restaurant located in the heart of South Yarra. I had the honour of being invited to try their creative fusion-Thai menu, and loved the whole experience!
The venue itself is quite small, with dim lighting and pink neon lights along the walls. I loved the funky interior and the space at the back which can host big groups.
After taking a good look at all the intriguing dishes they had, we decided to go for the Feed Me menu for $50pp, which is comprised of a selection of their best dishes. Every dish that we had was outstanding, and it was more that enough to make us full!
We started off with the Sesame Rice Crackers, which was a nice starter to munch on. The crackers were extremely crispy and super addictive.
The Thai Spiced Edamame and Smoked Ocean Trout Betel Leaf was next. The betel leaf was the perfect one-bite appetiser that tasted very fresh and flavourful. And the edamame is something you can’t go wrong with.
Next came the Chicken and Prawn Dumplings, which was definitely one of my favourite of the night. The filling is soft and juicy and the skin is silky. The dressing is sweet and sour and absolutely delicious.
The #Rocking Fried Chicken Ribs was possibly the best dish of them all! The ribs were so crispy, juicy and tender, and paired so well with the sauces on the side.
A unique dish was their Saltgrass Lamb Spring Rolls - I’ve never had lamb in a spring roll but it worked surprisingly well! I loved the flavours of massaman and coconut which went really well with the lamb.
Our main was the Massaman Curry, with 18hr beef shin, peanuts, potato, snake bean and pickled shallots. The curry was so delicious! It was creamy and flavourful, and the beef was so pull-apart tender! It’s amazing when paired with the rice!
The side of Roti Bread was also quite nice - I especially liked the peanut satay sauce that came with it.
Each dish’s portion size was perfect, and we were definitely full after all the food. We didn’t get to try their famous cocktails this time but I will definitely be back for them!
Overall, an amazing place for both the food and the ambience. Definitely would recommend checking it out!
Rock Sugar is a cozy, fancy place in South Yarra. We booked online and the process was very simple. We advised of our dietary requirements multiple times (before booking, with the booking AND on the day of the booking) and were disappointed to find that the dish we were after was not amended to cater for our dietaries (despite mentioning this dish every time). Other than that, we were impressed with the cocktails - the passionfruit one is 10/10. The service was attentive and kind. The food was tasty, not the best Thai food we have had, but definitely an experience! The crumbled eggplant was a little dry for our liking but made up for with the delicious Green Curry. Thanks for having us!
Finally got to experience Rock Sugar last night after seeing it all over Instagram and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a vibrant and cosy little place out of the way of the hustle and bustle of South Yarra’s main precinct and a great place to catch up with friends or go on a date.
Very friendly staff who were super helpful, didn’t make a booking and we got a table straight away.
Menu was superb and well catered for, we got the banquet option which was $50pp and they allowed us to get Pescatarian only. We loved every course but the standout was the eggplant, the yellow curry and the smoked ocean trout.
The drinks menu was fantastic and the cocktails were delicious. We paid $220 for 2x banquets and 4x cocktails plus the desert at the end - couldn’t recommend high enough, will be back!
Went here Sunday night for a work do and not only had an excellent dinner with friends also got a few of those cocktail buckets across the board. Staff engaging and cheery vibes and some great tunes
Maybe a 4.5/5 this was
Big fan of this place, tasty flavors and some which were a bit different and unique which was nice. Crunchy prawn betel leaf and scollops delicious to start, everything was really nice. Some things I thought had a bit to much salt/chilly salt but that’s just me maybe. Great cocktails and excellent friendly service as well.
Such a great atmosphere and vibe! The food was delicious, the cocktails are works of art and some great wines too. We had a great night out and would highly recommend the lamb spring rolls
I tagged along here with a few friends not knowing anything about this place, and I’m glad I didn’t know as it only added to my surprise.
The moment we walked into this place it went from strength to strength.
From the friendly staff, to the incredibly fresh, crispy, and well thought out infusions of every dish. To my personal highlight, the most mouth watering cocktails I’ve ever had, so much so I had to enquire further. And NOT to my surprise it turns out that every one of my favourites was an in house creation. This place is a well oiled machine and one I will definitely be coming back to regularly.
Been here a few times and it never disappoints. The food and drinks are exceptional! My girl friend and I ordered the lamb spring rolls (best rolls I've had yet) the king fish which is served like sashimi is absolutely to die for, so so good. The red velvet cocktail is a must try aswell as the buckets. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. Cute decor and banging music. Will be back x
LOVED our visit here for a girl's dinner. The food was great for sharing and the cocktails were cute and fun! I had the strawberry mojito, friend has the Insta-famous cotton candy cocktail and another had the bubble tea.
Food was well cooked, service was outstanding and it was easy to book a table online. Will definitely be coming back here - it's a cute date night spot!
Rock Sugar is a groovy casual Asian Fusion place with a flavoursome Thai menu. The layout of the restaurant is a little small however the ambience of the place was very cosy and cool. The green chicken curry was amazing and as were the chicken wings.
Cocktails a little on the pricey side, but the $50 feed me menu was just top notch just be prepared for a feast, if the feed me menu is not to your liking, you should at least try the chicken ribs
Located in the heart of South Yarra, Rock Sugar guarantees patrons good times with a flavour-laden Modern Thai menu and a stunning selection of cocktails.
True story: I loved every bite I had at Rock Sugar!
While there's so much to like about it, the highlight is definitely the food and rocktails. Service was amazing (another highlight!). We came for date night just to see what the buzz was about and wow we were making all sorts of noises as we took bites of everything. Overall, it's a great date night spot but also good for groups that want to try a little bit of everything.
We ordered:
Soft shell crab bun, Masaman lamb spring rolls, tuna tartare, kingfish, chicken and prawn dumplings, spiced tofu and a Chicken Laarb salad.. HEAVEN! The cocktails are probably the yummiest/prettiest ones I've ever had.
Was definitely worth every penny! 10/10
Finally got to this place and was not disappointed! Great funky menu, great vibe and great drinks too. Only fault was service was a bit slow and staff weren’t really be too receptive. Will be back though!
Rocksugar does not disappoint in the slightest! Such a fun vibrant spot. It was packed by 6:00 which means people love it! The servers are very friendly and gave the best drink/food recommendations. My server suggested we try the rockstar martini and after that first one I told her to just keep them coming, it's that good. We got the $50 feed me banquet which came with all the “house favourites” the flavours are all there, portions were perfect, great value! My partner said its her new favorite place so I think we might just become regulars.
Went here for my friends birthday and what an amazing experience. I sent a bunch of emails because four out of our group of nine people had dietary requirements and every one of us had the option of choosing our own banquet.
$50 a head, amazing food and wonderful staff!!! Everyone left full and satisfied, (the corn was absolutely delicious) I would 100% recommend this place to anyone. Thank-you Rock Sugar for such a wonderful and smooth run night. We’ll definitely be back!
Ordered: pork belly, braised beef, kingfish, roti, coconut rice, mango tango, fairy floss martini and chee chee martini (we managed to smash these)
LIT!: I loved the fit out of this restaurant and it’s cool/hip vibe as my friend and I sat at a bar. The star of the show was the pork belly which was soo tender and juicy. The fairy floss and mango tango was an experience too if you like concoctions.
NOT SO LIT: the roti was harder than what I’d personally prefer. Also the portion is quite small for all the dishes. We spent $150 between 2 girls.. in hindsight, we probably should have went with the feed me menu. But it was delicious!
Thanks for having us! X
Rock Sugar, is a Thai-inspired restaurant, known for their extraordinary cocktails and their outstanding share plates. They offer 2 kinds of menus – one being the a la carte menu and the other a banquet meal for tables of 8+ which comes in a baby size and a full size. Not only do Rock Sugar cater for any dietary requirements and allergies, they have, to my amazement, presented these banquet meals to suit every possible diet. There are Vegan Banquets, Vegetarian Banquets, Pescartarian Banquets and Gluten Free Banquets! There’s also a banquet for those who have no food restrictions! If you have certain allergies there is a special menu for you too. Wow!
Tonight, my companion and I were invited to try a selection of dishes.
For our entrée, we ordered the Srirarcha butter corn on the cob, the beef short rib, the sesame rice crackers, the saltgrass lamb spring rolls and the rocking fried chicken ribs.
The corn on the cob was succulent and juicy and came with a delightful serve of shaved grana padano which gave the dish that extra kick. The beef short rib was absolutely delicious. It was a generous serving and the meat was extremely tender, falling off the bone and hot. The sesame rice crackers were also great and went well the Tumeric nam prik. The chicken ribs were exceptional as well and cooked perfectly - they went beautifully with the chilli caramel. The only downside was we wished there was more of it! The lamb spring rolls were on par with the other dishes – beautiful flavours and textures. All of these dishes were faultless.
We shared the Duck Leg Salad – which was refreshing, spicy and juicy. All the flavours in the salad were perfectly balanced and went together like a dream! A genuinely stunning dish.
For dessert we chose the Mango Tango which was a simply perfect coconut panna cotta with peanut and almond cookie crumble. We also chose the Spice up Your Life which was a Bounty donut bun! Both desserts were impeccable and completed a truly amazing dining experience.
Rock Sugar is definitely one of the trendiest, certainly unusual and exciting Thai restaurants in Melbourne at the moment. Located at 477 Malvern Rd, South Yarra it sits very near to Williams Rd. They are open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays and for dinner from Tuesday through to Saturday with bookings available online.
The service was impeccable as well – very helpful and friendly staff and the decor was inviting – neon lighting, brick walls and a beautifully well stocked bar for all those incredible cocktails they do so well.
What an incredible dining experience at Rock Sugar – I was still talking about it days later!
Rock on in to Rock Sugar it’ll be the best choice you’ll ever make!
The food here is so good! And so are the cocktails. The service is really good and very quick. Our food came 2 mins after we ordered! The onky issue was the price, for what came on our plates we found it was a tad expensive. Really tasty, but expensive.
My partner and I organised to head to Rock Sugar for an anniversary and needless to say, we are absolutely excited to finally get down here, after having heard all the rage.
The service here is fantastic, however, they do get crazy busy and we were there during a peak time.
Their cocktails are off their rocker and the food is out of this world!
We did order the feed me menu and were a little disappointed that this did not include dessert, as in some cases, for the price, restaurants generally do include dessert to finish off the evening. However, overall, we were super content and well fed as we left and definitely will return at another date to try out some other menu items that we glazed over during our initial sitting.
I would say the pricing guide is accurate, you would be looking at $80-$85pp once you have included drinks and if you do order a dessert afterwards.
Definitely worth a go and we will definitely be back for a second trial.

On Malvern Road in South Yarra sits a new Thai restaurant that pumps 90s R&B and pop music with neon lights on the inside and outside of the restaurant. Inside is a casual setting which reminds me of Thailand (it’s the neon lights I say!) and the staff are so welcoming. Plenty of seats, plenty of drinkies and of course plenty of food!
It's hard to stand out amongst all of the great restaurants around South Yarra, but Rock Sugar really delivered when my friends and I visited last night. The combination of the funky, neon lighted interior and background beats created the perfect atmosphere for us to enjoy some smashing Thai fusion dishes. To top this all off, the customer service was friendly and responsive. It's such a relief when a restaurant lives up to the hype! Looking forward to coming back and trying the pork belly again
I LOVE this restaurant. I've been here with my partner for date night, with the girls for girls' night and with my fam. It suits every occasion. The food is awesome, and the cocktails are my favourite in Melbourne. My favourite part is the customer service. Twice we have had the same waitress (I believe her name is Ariel) and she always made the experience great. The restaurant has an awesome atmosphere, super cool design and best of all, they take bookings (which is quite groundbreaking in Melbourne these days...) Will be back again and again!
I was excited to visit Rock Sugar after seeing if pop up on Instagram all the time . Upon arrival I could see the signature neon sign and I could tell the night was going to be a good one. My friend and I ordered the blackberry fairy floss cocktail and ta really delicious berry cocktail
We ordered the banquet and swapped some dishes out as I couldn’t eat much chicken that night.
We started with edamame beans which had a nice seasoning on it, the rice crackers with tamarind sauce ( we loved the sauce) and the smoked ocean trout on betel leaf which was a perfect mouthful of flavours .
The hiramasa kingfish was next and I think it was one of my favourite dishes, the fish was lightly cured and I loved the sour, chilli and saltiness of the roe which balanced together perfectly
The lamb springrolls were another favourite as the massman cream complimented the crispy spring rolls so nicely. The lamb inside was so tasty and it was falling apart in each mouthful. The chicken and prawn dumplings were plump however we did think it needed a dipping sauce to go with it
For main we shared a massman curry , the beef was cooked very nicely and the potato still retained its shape. I did find the curry alittle watery but the flavours were still there. The roti which accompanied the curry could be more flakey as it reminded me of the Chinese spring onion pancake. It was however still enjoyable
Thanks for having us and Showing us a rocking good time
Tonight we dined at Rock Sugar, a modern fusion Thai restaurant in South Yarra. I have been wanting to dine here for ages thanks partially to the impressive cocktails and dishes on display on instagram. If interiors were anything to by this venue was a 5/5. Impressive neon signs and statement mirror pieces and some really great tableware started to build on what ended up a perfect evening.
The cocktail/mocktail list was impressive and I settled on the Lychee spritz. This mocktail (lychee, lemongrass and citrus) was so delicious and refreshing I didn’t even miss the alcohol. The Raspberry Soda mocktail was much sweeter and also citrus laced and tasty
We also ordered the tamarind sour cocktail. This tamarind, bourbon and egg white cocktail was just the perfect mix of sour.
For entrees we tried the Sriracha corn on cob was nicely cooked and came complete with a little char
The Rocking fried Chicken ribs, was definitely rocking. These sweet little finger licking delicacies, with lemongrass chili and amazing caramelization with the right amount of heat from red Kim jam sauce where fantastic, I could have eaten the whole plate myself so should definelty not be on the sharing menu!
We also had the Beatle leaf, this super flavoursome, super fragrant, super fresh mouthful was perfect, from the crunch to the sweetness from coconut and trout to the little bit of zing from chilli. Ohhh so good.
For mains we shared the green chicken curry, jasmine rice and some roti bread. The first thing I noticed was the delightful aroma of kafir lime and coconut as the curry was placed in front of me. This delicious curry was quite mild in heat, with fresh veggies and a lovely coconut flavour.
We made sure we left room for dessert because there were two items that stood out and I didn’t want to have to choose between them.
We ordered a ‘spice up your life’ the bounty donut bun. I died and went to dessert heaven, this light donut was filled with the most scrumptious generous portion of coconut and grated chocolate ice cream. The shredded coconut texture of each mouthful simply takes this dish to the next level and a definite homage to the bounty bar.
Mango tango a coconut Panacotta with peanut almond and cookie crumple reminded me a little of a mango Weiss ice cream bar with a light coconut base and prominent mango top. This dessert was much lighter that the spice up your life so would be a good option for those already full but wanting to finish on a sweet note.
Thanks so much for inviting us in to dine. I couldn’t fault a thing.
Usually when I am planning on visiting a restaurant I like to do a little research before hand to see if anything special catches my eye. In Rock Sugar's case, although the menu looked amazing at first and I was incredibly excited to try one of their special cocktails, what really caught my attention was their website, which displayed a gif of one of the best movie scenes ever, Jean-Claude Van Damme dancing in Kickboxer. After seeing this, I knew that I was in good hands, as the people at Rock Sugar clearly have impeccable taste.
Wow! I came here last night to celebrate my brothers birthday and everyone at the table was blown away. So many gluten free options!! You need to make a reservation for busy periods and it was very easy to call and adjust our booking. The food was spectacular! We ordered a few of the single plates, the soft shell crab bun and the beef ribs were the favourites. For the main share plates we ordered the green curry which was a hit and so was the whole snapper. The only dish that was a bit disappointing was the pork belly, but the picked salad that accompanied it was very tasty. The spicy bubble tea cocktail was surprisingly tasty and the red velvet cocktail was excellent!!
I’ve never been a big spring roll fan - it’s not that have anything personal against them, but unlike many other Melbournites’ Uber eats orders, the trusty spring roll generally never appears on my order. But Rock Sugar’s spring rolls have me converted - crisp on the outside, rich and fragrant on the inside - these delicious little morsels are just bursting with flavour and are without a doubt the best spring rolls in Melbourne.
Fantastic service and attentive staff. Made my friends birthday dinner so amazing. Great food and drinks
Thank you so much, could not fault
Thai cuisine was one of the few types of food I first encountered when I came to Australia and something that heavily reminded me of a O'Connell street which is home to some pretty good Thai restaurants. Melbourne has a more diverse range of cuisines as compared to Adelaide although I have yet to find a favourite spot for Thai food.
We were recently invited to dine at Rock Sugar, located in South Yarra and were happy to accept given the hype we’ve been hearing about it. Upon entering we were instantly welcomed with pink neon lights and Britney Spears – Stronger playing in the background. Those two nostalgic factors alone won me over! Loved the vibe and I’ve always been a R&B girl at heart.
Another day, another night on the town - this time at Rock Sugar! I've seen this place all over my Insta feed for its insane looking cocktails and asian fusion inspired dishes so I was ecstatic to be invited to try it. Looking exactly as cool as you'd expect but did it taste as good?!. Walking in it reminded me a lot of Mr Miyagi with the ambient lights and cool neon signage on the wall. Definitely a good start. The space is also smaller than expected so it actually is quite cosy and loud...perhaps not for a date but pre a night out to get you hyped up. The tables were a little on the small side though - we were dropping things left right and centre from the moment we got to the table but the service was great because staff never seemed to get annoyed at it. Thumbs up for that
Neon lights, good portions, great menu. Tried the $50 Feed me menu and that provided for a great experience with s variety of small bites, and one delicious green curry. Loved it. Will be back.
Great place for Thai fusion inspired meals. Awesome and friendly staff and epic drinks. Rocked up without a booking and was fortunate enough to secure a table for 2. Service was quick and the food was delicious!
The prettiest corn on a cob I've ever had. Tasty too. We went here for a birthday celebration. Staff were friendly and service was great. Food and cocktails were great. We had a lovely night out.
My friends and I had a lovely lunch today at Rock Sugar for my birthday. Super tasty food, fun cocktails, and great service. Everything was delicious but the prawn toast was a highlight.
Such great service! The food was amazing, cocktails an absolute treat. The best part was the service! We were served by Olivia and she was amazing! Always had a smile on her face and did multiple checks with us. Will definitely be back!
Great food!
We had the oysters, kingfish and scallops, as starters and they were just amazing.
For the mains we had the eggplant and green curry - good, but felt a bit basic after the starters, maybe because the starters were so good. Not to say that there was anything wrong with the mains! Still delish.
Great selection on cocktails, had four different kinds and all were great, couldn’t go wrong!
Overall YUM
Delicious cocktails and food, and their staff are very nice and attentive.
I went for the famous cocktails but discovered not only are the drinks amazing the food is incredible! The staff were all lovely too. :)
Went to Rock Sugar with couple of girl friends and we had a great time! The cocktails were absolutely amazing! My favourite is the Rockstar Martini. Food was incredible too. The oysters, scallops, soft shell crabs and snapper.. It's hard to decide which dish was the highlight of the night as we loved them all! Will definitely return!
