Last night we had a terrific meal from Tao Dumplings.
Despite not getting any dumplings, wow! The food was sensational.
Lean breast meat in the honey chicken which our children devoured, vegetable fried rice with loads of broccoli and absolutely fabulous chicken and black bean noodles.
I think I know when I get good Chinese but this was great. It’s my fave cuisine and this restaurant was top notch.
No photos as my phone died and I was too busy stuffing my face.
Get the sizzling fried eggplant and pork pie with teriyaki sauce, you will leave basically rolling out the front door with a full stomach and satisfaction 🥰
Yummy in my tummy, one of the best Asian food restaurants serving in South Yarra. Be sure to try their dumplings (it’s in the name), as well as their wonton soup 🍜🙌🏻

If you’re a regular on my blog, you’d know that Tao Camberwell has been a favourite. But recently I thought I should branch out and try their other locations. Upon entering, I noticed that the South Yarra Tao Dumplings has the same theme of dark, heavy, wood furniture; an open kitchen to see the dumpling chef at work; loud (sometimes very loud) chatter; two levels; and the same menu with a disclaimer under the photos that the images may not be exactly how your dish would look.
Yummy dumplings 🥟 😋. Decor considerably more upmarket than a lot of dumpling restaurants!

Been here a few times now, the best pan fried chicken and prawns dumplings u will find in melbourne! Love the crisp and that the skin if not too thick unlike many other joints we have been to. Their yangzhou fried rice is really flavorsome too and gets addictive. Staff are friendly and smiley. Loved the decor and variety of music played as well. Once of my favorites and would definitely go more often if it was closer to my place. Hard to find a good dumpling place these days, hope this one is here to stay.
Dude. The lamb fried dumplings are amazing. Oh man, it's also BYO for wine which is great. If you only order dumplings and bring your own wine you might almost feel guilty for how cheap it is. I really wish there were small options of the other things on the menu, I think people would really like to mix and match sides if the other options weren't all like $25 each!!
Today I had lunch at Tao, I was in abit of a rush so I looked at there lunch specials which was very good value, for under $15 I got a main dish of chicken satay with steamed rice which was very tasted and very clean. I also ordered the short wonton soup which was also very good..

Best dumplings in South Yarra. Their other foods are delicious also. They have a good variety of lunch specials and mains also which is a plus. Wait times are a little sketchy but at least the food is good, right?
Great location, lovely set up and awesome food. What more can one ask for. We ordered Wonton in Schezwan Chili Sauce, Pan Fried Dumplings and Stir fried chicken with vegetables. Everything tasted yummy and very pocket friendly 👌🏼
Been here only 5 million times. Hands down the best Xiao Long bao in the city. They have a good range to select from - their schezwan chilli dumplings are super too.

Such a great find. Good dumplings, clean venue and dead cheap. A much nicer place than your standard gross/dirty/b-grade Chinese dumpling restaurant. Not great service, but not rude either so willing to turn a blind eye.

Pan fried pork dumplings are delicious, so with the deep fried calamari (not as spicy as I prefer but my friends were not complaining). Good place to visit after a big night out. Very welcoming and friendly staff, relaxed yet attentive. Will be back.
The pan fried dumplings were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside! The stir fried noodles we ordered were also delicious! The fried ice cream was a little too frozen though. We had to wait for it to melt before we could dig our spoons into it.
Loved the pan fried dumplings! Great taste and consistency. Got then delivered and the food was still fresh. Recommend the pan fried dumplings with the sauce.
We ordered the steamed wontons with Szechuan chilli and the soup dumplings, both were absolutely delicious. The soup dumplings kept their shape and didn't burst, and the flavour of the soup was lovely. The duck pancakes were also really tasty. The fried noodles was probably the only dish that wasn't overly flavoursome. But overall, great dumplings and would definitely return.
Visited two times... Must say food are very tasty and fresh... Staff's are very welcoming and the food we ordered came on time... clean restaurant... Must visit once and taste the food. Food are quite cheap.. Must go once and try.

Steamed Pork Dumplings were really good, must visit this place if you like Dumplings. Near to South Yarra Railway Station. Staff is welcoming and nice Ambience.
This place still has the best vegetarian dumplings and the best pan fried dumplings I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Cannot fault any of the dumplings here actually and they are all made fresh in house. Tao is definitely our go to for dumplings every time! Service is friendly and food comes out quickly too. Any friends I've taken here have loved it too! Highly recommend.
Really really yummy dumplings! Nothing to fault. Highly recommend the prawn dumplings, shao-long-bao, steamed pork buns & vegetarian with schezwan sauce. My go- to in the area :-) Fast service and good value for money!
One of the better place for dumpling .....
On Toorak Rd, near Punt Rd corner, spacious, two storey dining area, modern, very well fitted and serving good dumpling, a la carte looks good too.
Foodwise, there were two issues on the evening; first, we can't get enough .... the other issue was that they are trying to fit 8 Xiao Long Bao in the Bamboo basket, which was tight, their skins stick together and ruptured as we picked it up .... losing all those sweet juice.
Adequate service considering a full house on a Saturday night with a limited number of waiting staff, thank you.

I had dinner with my friend on a Saturday night.Environment and decoration: clean and impressive. I like the chairs, they are squishy and comfy.
Services: I feel like the staffs were sort of rushing, but it was reasonable since the restaurant was quite busy, but they are really friendly.
Food: As a Chinese I would say the food is authentic and delicious. Especially their Homemade Xiao Long Bao, that was impressive, fresh, juicy, and perfect temperature. I would put it on top of my list for Xiao Long Bao in Melbourne. For dessert I would recommend their Deep Fried Ice Cream, it was my first time trying it. $5.8, you get a big portion of deep fried vanilla ice cream. I still can't get my head around of how they fried the ice cream hahah.
All in all I enjoyed my whole experience, the food was not expensive at all compared with other Chinese restaurant. will definitely come back:)
Similar to other chinese retaurants, but the dining area is bigger and cleaner. Food were tasty and service was great. We had a good time and would go back for sure.
Tao Dumplings has quite a posh interior but their menu is definitely not expensive. We shared a plate of 15 steamed pork dumplings - yum! Their bean paste minced pork noodles was also nice - would have loved it more if it was more saucy. Tempting menu, will be back for more!
Service is great, not a long wait time. Xiao long bao skin was a little thick, but still delicious ! Regular pan fried dumplings were amazing!! Spring rolls also super tasty

Even if you're lazy and don't feel like going south of the yarra to get some food, Tao is an exception to make. Super juicy, yet doughy, dumplings make it all worth the trip. Take away is fantastic, food coming out quickly - you even can snack on some prawn chips while you wait. You can't go wrong here.
I have been a regular costumer of this restaurant. They served pretty tasty dumplings and one of the best is the beef and lamb dumplings. Highly recommended if you love Chinese food.

The pork dumplings with chilli sauce are next level amazing. After eating some pretty bad Chinese food in Ballarat for the last few years you really come to appreciate how good this food is. It's my favourite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne.

Awesome dumplings and really well dressed restaurant. Lovely place for a mid-week dinner at a more than reasonable price. Table service was also excellent and very timely.
Had dinner here and it was so good, we came back for lunch two days later. Food quality and flavour, service and cleanliness were all awesome. We're thinking of moving to South Yarra just so we can eat here more often.

Tao Dumpling House is a new place in South Yarra. It is right near the train station. They had been open for a few months but I had not discovered them until recently. I probably just rushed by the place without looking on my runs. The place was not busy and the staff were attentive. The manager was just ok.
Ordered the take out dumpling (fried pork and chicken/prawn)! Was really good! Glad to have an option of reasonably priced dumplings close by!
Great dumplings and atmosphere at a very reasonable price. We enjoyed the whole experience and highly recommend others to try it when in South Yarra.

We tried the beef and lamb steamed dumplings which were really tasty and the dumpling dough was one of the best we ate. Also, the lemon duck was delicious, well served with good portions.
Service was very attentive as well.

Came here for Sunday lunch and was very impressed with the decor, ambience, service and most importantly food. The dumplings are top notch and surprisingly cheap especially considering its location on Toorak Road. A much needed and welcome addition to the South Yarra dining scene. Highly recommended!
This place is the real deal. The pan fried dumplings with their crispy layer is a definite winner. Service was awesome with the server's suggestions being spot on. The wines are great value and delicious. We'll definately be back.
This is a wonderful dining experience. We have been back twice since our first visit. It has been a long time since there was a decent Chinese/ Dumpling restaurant within cooee of Toorak Road.
Service is charming, food great, price reasonable. If I praise them more we won't get a table next time.

Best dumplings in South Yarra! Good quality, fresh and tasty. Excellent service even for take away customers! I love this place and am so glad it opened just near me!
We had some very nice dumplings, nice vegetables and wonton soup at Tao. Like others have said it is nice to have a this addition to the area. The ambience is nice too. After the positive reviews of others we were really disappointed by the lemon chicken, which was overly sweet and had way too much batter (that is, each piece was probably 75% batter, and the chicken was a few mm thick). In any case we would definitely come back here because the dumplings and soup were nice and the restaurant is good value. Feedback for improvement is that the kitchen needs to time the dishes better to suit the diners, rather than whenever whatever comes out of the kitchen and everything at once.

This is the best thing to have happened to the dining scene on Toorak Road. At last, a take out/cheap eat that isn't pizza or Thai. On a street peppered with horrendously overpriced and distinctly average apparently 5* eateries, Toorak Road lacks the variety of high and low end meaning we often head out to Fitzroy, Chinatown or elsewhere to get a good value, tasty dinner. Sure, Toorak Road and South Yarra does coffee and brunch very well - but your best dumplings? Head in to the city I'm afraid. Until now.
Tao was delightful.
We ordered steamed pork dumplings, prawn shu mai, mixed steamed vegetables, lemon chicken, pork buns and shredded beef. There were 4 of us and this was the perfect amount.
The dumplings were light and tasty - not stodgy. The vegetables were steamed in a garlic sauce and delicious and the lemon chicken was superb. Real chicken, crispy fried with a sour lemon drizzle - not gloopy balls of fried chicken lathered in MSG as you will get at many other establishments. The beef was great - crispy, sweet and spicy. Portions were generous - $11 for 15 dumplings, $18 per main dish. Reasonable yet the presentation, quantity and finish was akin to that of a much more expensive establishment.
The bill for 4 (including 6 beers!) came to a modest $120 - so $30 each. Unbelievable for that quality, quantity and location.
Suffice to say, I'm delighted that Tao is close by and I'll be back!
Fantastic food and fantastic service!! We've been there a couple of times and we haven't been disappointed. Their dumplings are the best in South Yarra at the moment IMO, good prices and great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Friendly staff, great food & service....we had Spring Rolls, Steamed Prawn Dumplings, Steamed Rice, Honey Chicken, Peking Duck Pancakes, Steamed Broccoli with Oyster Sauce....have been there twice, and we will definitely go back again. Reasonably priced wine also available.
Dumplings were delicious! We had the steamed pork dumplings and the pan fried chicken and prawn dumplings along with the spring rolls, fried rice and Asian greens as well and we were very satisfied with what we received. Definitely going back!

The clay pot chicken and black bean beef were too salty with heavy sauces, but large portions.
Chicken and prawn dumplings taste really good. Highly recommended the dumplings.
