A typical good Japanese restaurant. Not sparkling clean and shows the signs of popularity. Not cheap but quality. Eat inside or out.
Best Karaage chicken ever! Juicy on the inside the crunchy on the outside. The miso was fantastic as well, can't fault this place. Definitely one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants. Great staff, great food, will definitely be back again!
An amazing place if you are craving to have some amazing sushi. They provide one of the best. Also they have some amazing spider rolls. Must go.
If ever the good Japanese folk find the year round warm weather, sunshine and amazing beaches of the Gold Coast too much and want to migrate down to Melbourne, I'd welcome them with open arms for more places like this.
In the middle of Chinatown, this cool joint. The sashimi chirashi is pretty much a sushi bowl and I'm glad the rice used is pretty much the same for making sushi. Slightly vinegared white grains topped with beautifully fresh and tender slices of seafood... Extremely satisfying.
The wagyu don is good too. Expertly cooked to a blushing pink. The rice however could do without the Kewpie and less of the sweet soy mix through it to let the beef sing.
I'd go back for sure.
Amazing Japanese food! Love it!! Ordered a pork Katsu don and it’s amazing! Nice decorations and makes you feels like you’re in Japan! Would highly recommend! Thanks for the amazing meal!! This made my day!!
Maruya what a gem i stumbled upon a few years back. The food is epic and good value. Try any of the soft shell crab dishes or my favourite the bento box which comes with a good variety. Awesome vibes with sushi bar right in front and the decor takes you to japan. Even better its byo wine
Authentic Japanese food at a reasonable price. I was so excited after reading the menu I ordered food and drinks for myself that was enough to feed two. Sashimi was definitely a highlight which tastes super fresh and melted in my mouth. Also loved the peach and lychee flavoured alcohol.
Fav restaurant on the Gold Coast. Great food, great service and nice atmosphere.
The chicken teriyaki is perfect - no grisly chicken, rice cooked just right and delicious sauce.
Also try the chicken fillets on sizzling hotplate. Delicious.
The karrage octopus salad is special and tasty. The mixed sashimi sushi rice is not too much but it's fresh and yummy. The spider roll is yummy and creative. The staff are nice and always smile. Nice Japanese restaurant in south port.
Went here the other night with a few friends and had a great time. The most fought after items we ordered were the gyoza and the takoyaki, but everything was very good. The sushimi was fresh, sushi excellent and the seaweed was the best I've had. My friend and I got a little sozzled at the end of the night and had a wasabi battle and even the wasabi tasted better than normal. They lose half a point because they forgot about our table for a while.
P.s. The byo karaoke place across the road is worth a laugh and a few cringes.
My boyfriend and I always come to Maruya when we don't know what else to eat in southport. The atmosphere is very cozy and the food is delicious. I always order the chicken karaage while my boyfriend is more adventurous and orders a different dish when we come, no matter the order it is always delicious. Five stars!
A nice, cosy dining experience both day and night. The food are always yummy! I most favour their large sashimi platter and wagyu tataki salad with ponzu sauce. Been to this restaurant so many times and their standards have not dissappointed me
Best Japanese restaurant in Southport!!! Sushi is always fresh, service is great and the beer is always cold! Their toy collection is also worth visiting just to see the cool items they have.
Figurines on cabinet as decoration.
Cosy and warm little place. Choice of normal seats and high chair with bench top overlooking the chef making sushi and a row of sakes. A good variety of food on menu. Food taste good. Staffs are friendly but they can get quite busy. Definitely will go again.
They make sushi just as good as they make cars! The team at Maruya, working hard or hardly working? Not because they're lazy but because they make it effortless looking. Rattly tables and quizzical looks from confused wait staff be damned - order it to go you Goose and eat it at home with the TV on instead!
The food is satisfactory for the price. The food took longer than expected to come out. The sashimi pieces were a bit smaller and thinner than most Japanese places.
Great!!. I am Japanese living in Melbourne. Sashimi is not so expensive, but sufficient. Bento and miso soup have great quality!! If this restraurant is in Melbourne, I could come here every month...
Great Chicken Karaage !. I go there often at lunch time to order Chicken Karaage Bento Box. Wow, an amazing food. Quite filling and well priced. I will keep going back there.
Great food. We go here all the time and absolutely love it, beautiful fresh sashimi, wonderful staff and reasonable prices. Get there before you can't get in!
Love. Maruya is definitely the place to go. They will accommodate you no matter what, even when closing. The food is great and the portions are a decent size. The sushi is a MUST, so fresh and tastes amazing!
Cheap and cheerful. Yum, what a find!
Walking distance from the hospital is this little gem. From the outside it doesn't look much, but you'll be pleased you stopped by.
Mains from $11-18 are substantial and very well made. Salmon teriyaki was beautifully presented and tasted just as good as it looked.
Staff were attentive and helpful, and the our meals came out quickly.
Yum!. We had one bad meal here (quite some time ago), while the rest have been top notch. I don't know what happened that once, but thankfully it wasn't on our first visit or we'd never have returned and we'd have missed out on some delicious food.
They make the best tempura (we get the large mixed one which has vegetables and prawns) and the spicy grilled salmon sushi is not to be missed. Other faves include the edamame beans, agadashi tofu, takoyaki and the deep fried crab claws. They also make a very tasty miso, which comes free with some dishes incuding the large tempura.
I also like that there is outdoor seating (along with indoor) and though licenced you can BYOB. Service is quick, help yourself to water.
Excellent. Friendly staff. Nice food. Reasonable prices.
Not bad for the price.. Okay, I might be a very picky customer. I had my second lunch at Maruya this afternoon by myself. It is a very tidy little place, very casual. I ordered a regular sushi set. It includes 3 pieces of Salmon nigiri, 2 pieces King fish, 2 Tuna, 1 prawn and 1 squid. The fish cutting is nicely done. The only thing I don't like is tuna. It was cut along the sinewy and it doesn't taste that great. The rice for sushi is a bit too much for me and it was a bit too dry. Wasabi used wasn't very good and its also a bit too dry as well. There's a piece of nori under squid, and its a bit hard to chew, I think they probably use the lower grade seaweed. Taste of sushi rice is not very Japanese at all. Its a bit too sweet and didn't go with the soy sauce too well. The whole thing tasted more like sushi served in Korean restaurants. Table setting was wrong, chopsticks should be placed the other way around. Fishes are fresh, but I don't like the idea of keeping different fish in the same container. Saying all that, for $25 dollars (include a beer), I still think its money worth to go. Its not great but certainly a good choice for the price.
Great taste and open to midnight Fridays Saturdays. This restaurant is in heart of the new gold coast chinatown at Southport. The sushi and sashimi dishes are the freshest you can find on the Gold Coast. The range of other dishs are extensive with mains generally starting at $10. Parking is free for 2 hours and night time street parking is easily available.
Good quality Japanese and reasonably priced. Many lunch options with good combo deals. Very good tempura.
With all meals priced at $20 and under, it makes sense to order small dishes to share. Our Sashimi is stunningly fresh and silky, presented on top of oyster shells which we would prefer to have been cloaked in seaweed.
My boyfriend’s favorite Japanese restaurant. We love their Wagyu steak! So good! 🤩
It’s an authentic Japanese place, very cute dine in area. I took some take out, but I will come back to eat there. Staff are very friendly! I recommend it as the food was yummy 😋
Second time here I sat in, it’s a great date spot and the food didn’t disappoint 😊😊
If you want to visit japan for the food but you haven't been able to, go here!! I would give 10 stars if I could. So cheap for the amount of food you get, my partner who is always still hungry after meals actually struggled to finish their bento box haha. Real flavours, high quality, and the decor inside makes you feel like you're in Japan! Can't wait to try everything on their menu
Fresh and quality food. Clean Place and friendly Staff.
Average taste and a bit over- priced.
Love this place, great vibe, cool staff, awesome decor and fantastic food.
Good food, very friendly, fast and efficient service. Definitely worth a visit
Tried the Bento and Cold Soba set as well as Takoyaki. Super delish and great service. Loved the environment too. Will definitely be back!
Came in for a meal with friends. A very unique and modern Japanese interior with friendly staff. The bento box meal came with rice, karage chicken (very crispy, delicious), a lot of salad, spring rolls (was swapped to salmon from a friend's meal) and crispy salty radish. While the meal was delicious, the price was a bit high ($19). The ambience though does make for a good night out with friends. Alcohol was also available.
