Review Hometown Kitchen - Spearwood

Good food, friendly service. If you looking for a good friendly restaurant near your house with good price. Definitely recommend here. The spring roll a bit smell old oil. Otherwise all good here 👍🏻

We grabbed some takeaway for a celebratory dinner. We ordered online and picked it up. There were size options for each dish which was nice. The food wasn't the best. I didn't particularly like the fried soft noodles due to their flavour and the noodles breaking up into smaller pieces. The spicy pork was nice as was the garlic chicken. The dishes weren't as tasty as in other places I've tried.

Good food good service. Love the sweet and sour pork. The crunch remains even with the sauce. Sizzling tofu is quite average in my opinion, I think some crispy bits such as nuts or even a burst of salted fish can compliment better. Price wise is on the higher side. Will we come back again? Yes we will, as I’m keen to try everything else on the menu.

Since moving from their Parkwood place into Coogee I always wanted to come down and try it as it was much closer to home. Had good memories of the place back when it was in Parkwood. Well It is set in a small cozy place with pretty good service. The presentation of the food was good. But the food was pretty average. I mean it wasn’t bad but when I go out and eat I like real tasty, party in your mouth kind of sensations and unfortunately overall it wasn’t. The sizzling tofu, Kung pao beef, and prawns and vegetable in garlic sauce were their best dishes on the night. The fried stuff was average, the fried rice was pretty average as well. Pity as wanted this place to do well but it fell short.

Nice food and service, love the burnt taste char kuay teow and chilli hot laksa. We will be back to try the sizzling hot plate tofu!

We ordered vegetarian fried rice, vegan salt and pepper chicken, steamed rice and prawn crackers. It was absolutely delicious, the salt and pepper chicken was mouth wateringly good, fried rice was very tasty and nice crunchy prawn crackers. We couldn’t have asked for a better dinner!

I got the salt and pepper pork which was prefect. Crispy and meaty just how I like it. Next dish was Gan Xiang Fish Fillet which was great too. Only feedback for now would be to get a thicker straw as I didn't realise there would be pulp in my drink and was not able to enjoy the drink on my ride home. Cost wise - 2 small portions and one average drink came up to just over $45 Will definitely go again to try more dishes and if they have an option of takeaway icecream dessert we'll get to try that too.

Szechuan Chicken had minimal chicken and large pieces of green capsicum in watery sugar sauce??. The dish should taste of chilli and garlic. Dreadfully bad tonight. We even drove to pick it up. Could of ate anywhere else. Also white rice was stuck together and fell out of the container in one block 🚫. To add, the portion size was also a shocker. A thin small container for the main. Anywhere else serves the both of us plenty. Craig and Bridget, Coogee.

I accidently put through an order for a satay chicken instead of lemon chicken. I can't eat satay because I am allergic. Called the restaurant as soon as the order was placed and they did not answer my phone call, I called three times until someone finally answered. I asked if I could change my order to Lemon Chicken as I can't eat Satay. They bluntly said “no we can't” without any further help. They then said we can’t because the meal has already been made. Note: I had just placed the order, 1-2 minutes ago… So they made my meal in 2 minutes… They said they can change it if I pay an extra $5.00 which is absolutely ridiculous because although I made a mistake they made my meal in 2 minutes and didn’t answer the phone straight away when I called 3 times back to back. When I got to the restaurant I said I was disappointed that they are charging me an extra $5.00 and the lady was really rude and didn’t want to hear what I had to say and kept talking over me and saying “are you going to pay, are you going to pay because you made us make you another meal now are you going to pay?” With a rude condescending smile. I then said I will be putting up a review and again with her condescending smile she said “It’s ok hunny, we close on Sunday anyway”. I know they have moved to a new location but from the service I received I’m very shocked and would suggest others to order elsewhere because they were definitely not friendly and I wouldn’t support a business that is rude to their customers and not willing to help.

Some hits and bad misses with this place. We ordered the chicken wings (👍👍), curry beef brisket noodles (👎 Indian curry taste was overpowering, we only ate the beef), noodle soup with fish fillet (👍👍), spicy pork belly (👎 there was a bitter after taste. Perhaps the sauce or spices was burnt) and hot & sour soup (👎 way too salty, we jokingly said it should be renamed hot & salty soup). Giving this 2/5 stars because 2/5 dishes were good.

I got the curry laksa, it was definitely very spicy however tasted really good. Good price for the portion size as well

First time here. Was impressed with the extensive vegan menu. Ordered stir fry soft noodle. Fried rice. Salt and Pepper ‘chicken’ and sizzling tofu. We didn’t have to wait long. Food was absolutely amazing. Good size portions too. No scrimping there. Can’t wait to go back and try some of the other vegan dishes. Place looked very clean and service was brilliant. Highly recommend.

It's been two years since I set foot in this place, too many choices! Great to see Mr Chef still around. Nice decor, comfortable seating. Reacquainted myself to the favourites Curry fish, hometown tofu, chicken in vinegar sauce and lotus root stir fry. All had good taste and decent portion. An institution in Parkwood I must say!

Order repeated 3 times to the guy on the phone and he still got it wrong. Did not get what I wanted in the end as I didn’t realise until we got home, very disappointed! Food itself was edible but not what I would pay $12.50 for. Not good enough!!
Jack
When it comes to rice the options are quite small but the food is still good. The staff are nice and the service is quick. Nice music and atmosphere

Love this place, the food is awesome and it’s one of our family favourites but it would help if the opening hours were correct on here as it’s Monday and it says your open until 12 midnight, which seemed unusual to us but we thought we would try anyway after being stuffed around for the past hour and a half for the very same reason at other establishments saying they were open until 10 online only to find they stop food at 8:30. I work in this very industry and no matter the night if we have publicly said we’re open to a certain time then we’re open til that very time. Very frustrating to say the least

Visited for its recent hype on ig but food wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Ingredient used wasn’t fresh and service was rather flat - there was only one other table apart from us. When asked at the counter how did dinner went, lady apologised after being told food wasn’t fresh. It was my partner’s birthday and I suggested this place. Oh man. we were disappointed and agreed that we would not return again.

I have been ordering from Hometown for many months now and the food has been pretty good. The delivery is pretty quick and friendly. Well priced and I can recommend them.

One of the best restaurant i've visit when in perth. Love the warm and homely setup.. The laksa taste even better than in Singapore... My photo left me drooling and missing their food now. Will definitely patronize again when i get back to perth!<br/>Oh yah.. in addition, their service is tip top and the boss is super friendly... thumbs up!

We have been eating at the Hometown Kitchen ever since it opened, as have a lot of friends and relatives. We have never had a bad dish but obviously like some things more than others, however, that's simply a matter of personal taste. I love their curry laksa [hot version], gang xang chicken, any spicy dishes.. My wife loves their satay dishes.<br/><br/>We have always had good service, a reasonable price and enjoyable meals.
Kester Wilson
My wife and I have been going to hometown kitchen since they opened we have always found Rachel and the staff very helpful and friendly, never have we had a bad or disappointing meal there and I think I have tried just about everything on the menu. We have both traveled to Malaysia and never found anything that was better. Hometown Kitchen gets the thumbs up from us for service, price and definitely the food.

My family and extended family choose to have our get togethers at hometown, staff are so welcoming and eager to make sure u have an enjoyable experience, the dishes here are far better, definitely in taste but in price too, than similar restaurants. The staff are great at recommending new dishes for you too try, hence we have new favourites now. Thanks hometown keep up the great service and tasty dishes.<br/>

Absolutely love this place. Delicious food at a very reasonable price. Definitely a hidden gem. Live directly behind this restaurant and love being able to smell this amazing food being cooked every day. If you are looking for good, honest food, then look no further.

We’ve been going to Hometown for years. Always consistent and friendly staff! The fish fillet bee hoon always a great winter warmer. Laksa for those who like it spicier!

Fast service, freshly cooked, very generous portion and good dish. Have been there many times and havent been disappointed. Well recommended!!! <br/>

Absolutely loved it and so did my wife and daughter .its a 30 minute drive from our home but we continue to back hope that says something services was great and it's not pricey
Stephanie Wozniak
Fantastic food, fantastic service. Staff were polite and friendly. Worth the 45 minute drive from our place. Recommend the crispy noodles and the laksa. Wish I had taken some photos of the delicious food we had.

Have eaten at Hometown Kitchen many times and have never been disappointed. It is casual dining in a pleasant relaxed environment. It is not overly flash, but you are not paying overly flash prices either. It is clean, comfortable and very pleasant. The service is always excellant and wait staff are very friendly, polite and efficient. But the main thing here is the food which is simply delicious. Have tried a number of items in the menu and have loved them all. My only disappointment is that we have moved to regional WA and can no longer enjoy the culinary delights offered by Hometown. Can highly recommend this restaurant<br/>
Jim Catelli
My family has been going here for years even after we moved away from the area. The staff are always fantastic and the food is consistently great. We always try a new dish and are always amazed at how good they all taste. <br/>I really like the Malaysian Chicken curry and the pepper beef. My Wife Loves the Crispy Squid. <br/><br/>Would highly recommend

Lovely place. Absolutely delicious vegan options and super friendly staff. Had gan xiang chicken and kuay teow both vegan and super tasty and flavourful.
Food Mania
After reading different reviews, I m tempted to try how good some customers said. Service is good. Price is reasonable. Decoration inside the restaurant is very nice. The food is not as delicious as what I expected for person that eat out often. Charge extra when we asked to get more curry laksa sauce due to noodle soaks up the sauce in the middle of eating. With the location the restaurant it is, more for local people to visit. May not go back to try again.
David Weightman (Xenoglossisist)
Went for lunch to this welcoming venue. Decor is above average for this type of restaurant and gives a good impression. Honey Chicken was delicious as the honey sauce was not overbearing and the chicken bites were perfect little fluffy clouds. The Singapore Mee Fun was also good with a great wok hai flavour. The Claypot Yee Mee and Curry Laksa were both underwhelming; the claypot dish was very salty and lacked that comfort food factor and the Laksa was too large with lots of noodles but only with one prawn, a little chicken and the Tofu pieces were also little sour. So, despite the very reasonable prices (would have been happy to pay the excess for a few more prawns), overall this was a very average visit.
Treesaregreen
Mixed reviews around my table for dinner the other night. Some stand out dishes were the gan xiang chicken (good crunch even with the sauces over it) and the spicy pork belly clay pot. The dishes were perhaps a little on the salty side but mix it up with rice and it's a good meal. Also ordered the tofu with meat topping - the tofu tasted a bit old... it was tough to break open and the sauce was over powered by hoi sin sauce.
Dan W
Good, quick Malaysian food for reasonable prices here. The curry fish "wings" is definitely worth ordering. Food comes out quickly. This isn't the best Malaysian in Perth but it's not too bad.

As they advertised they have the best Curry Laksa in town so we decided to come today for lunch. <br/>Curry Laksa -1pc prawn, 5pcs chicken strips,3pcs fried tofu, spring onions??? If is authentic should put mint leaves. <br/>Honey Chicken with fried rice - Honey chicken was good but fried rice below standard rice was hard. <br/>Malaysian iced coffee was great <br/>Bobo chacha (Malaysian coconut milk dessert) not authentic short cut ingredients. <br/>Amazing service, clean and comfortable.

We went there on last Friday. The service was good 👍👍I finally tried my fav meal: Clay Pot Yee Mee, reli special & tasty. Definitely must order meal in here for me every time I visit 😊😊
Sandhya1814
I guess i was claim that this is one of my most fav chinese restaurant and i would love to visit it soon. Loved the claypot eggplant and mahpo tofu(hope i spelled that correctly) <br/>I wasnt a big fan of the salted egg prawn but to be fair i am not the type that likes fried food. <br/>Had a chendol too which was decent. Great food and lovely staffs.
魏婷婷
a nice suburban malaysian chinese restaurant in town, whenever we missing malaysian foods this is the place that we love to visit ! they always have quality foods and friendly service with reasonable price ! especially love their curry laksa, chicken rice and fish head curry claypot! these 3 must try !
Ilovebeansprouts
Have tried their lunch and dinner menu. Like the fact that their menu offers lots of different variety, but not all dishes taste great. Gan Xiang Fish, Sambal Lala & Spicy Pork Belly has good flavours. However, the Curry Fish and Laksa doesn't quite hit the mark for us; curry fish has a fishy smell to it. Prices are reasonably priced for some dishes, but some are not, especially for dishes that are overloaded with side ingredients like onions and capsicums. We sometimes find more side ingredients in a dish than the main protein itself. <br/><br/>Bubur Cha Cha and Chendol are alright, while the Red bean Pancake could have tasted so much better without the chocolate sauce drizzled over the top. Choc sauce tastes quite artificial and it's really not a necessary addition to this dessert.<br/><br/>Service is always good and efficient, so definitely 👍👍 for that.

Classic local chinese restaurant.<br/>Great service....polite and prompt.<br/>Great food...fresh and hot.<br/>Great price...40 for 2 dishes an entree and drink<br/>I love this sort of restaurant, you know you'll get great food, quickly, served with a smile.<br/><br/>

Dishonest takeaway service! Ordered a curry laska to go and it was not even close to what is served to dine-in customers. Chicken smelt off, only had 1 prawn, fish cake was in small bits and when I specifically asked for mixed noodle/vermicelli...only noodle was given. Simply not good enough!
Joanneyl
I eat here quite regularly and have been here loads and loads of times for shared dishes and rice for dinner. I haven't tried their lunch menu though. They serve authentic malaysian food specifically sarawakian food. Prices are really good for the portions though recently the portions seem to be getting smaller. Choices are plenty and they have rewardle(which is a bonus). Their fish head curry, gan xiang chicken, belacan string beans, butter chicken, and sizzling tofu are really good.
Bite Into It
A great asian place to dine. Authentic food at super low price. This is what i have been searching for. Places are getting more expensive for less, whilst this place isn't like that. The food is definitely good here. Will do a pit stop here if i am in the area.
Disheartened Local
Ordered online and was charged extra for the trouble. PLUS extra again for paying by card!<br/><br/>Kway teow noodles were overcooked and mushy plus didn't have the wok hei (charred flavours from the wok) flavour it's known for.  It included a good amount of gristle and 2 prawns for the combination version of the dish.<br/><br/>It was a small, 5cm high, rectangular container and cost $17.30!<br/><br/>Never ever again. Terrible!

A few days ago, we went for dinner to hometown kitchen for the first time. Upon entrance, we were greeted with a friendly and welcoming faces. This suburban hawker makes me feel comfortable like im eating a mates place. Though the service was great, the food in my opinion is below average, hence that is why i rated 3/5. We ordered a few dishes, but i will just mention the good and the bad. <br/>Good: Homemade tofu, this was nice, crispy and not too oily which i enjoyed thoroughly. <br/>Bad: Western Butter Chicken. I only managed to take two pieces of chicken, because this dish tasted like fried chicken with condensed milk. It was extremely sweet! Im well aware of western butter chicken, as other malaysian chinese restaurant sells them too. <br/><br/>Overall, friendly service, but food wise, flavour was just a miss. Probably will give it another go, but will <br/>try their specialty, laksa! :)<br/><br/>
Asianfoodie
Love their curry laksa & sang mee. Always come back for these two. Love how they use skinny vermicelli for the laksa as that's authentic Malaysian style noodle which I can't find anywhere else in Perth.
William Ooi
The search for Authentic Malaysian food in Perth continues. I tried their signature dish their curry laksa it certainly looked the part unfortunately a Little too much of the curry powder taste which to me means the actual curry paste wasn't properly fried then stirred till boil a technique my mum showed me. You should taste curry not the raw powder form. The cha Kway teow is difficult to do it was okay but I am yet to find one that can do the authentic Penang style which has the char taste from the charcoal plus the clams etc. oh well Penang here I come for my hit. The Sar HOR Fun looks the business so give that a go.
Footloose Foodie
After seeing all the advertisement I decided to try this place. Its located a little out of the way in a small local complex. The decor is typical of a modern Chinese restaurant. Ordered the seafood curry laksa, herbal chicken, Japanese tofu, stir fry beef, honey pepper pork and steamed rice. <br/>The herbal chicken was a whole chicken cooked in a herbal soup. The chicken was cooked well and very tender with a mild herb soup. Nice but nothing special. Curry Laksa is suppose to be a chef specialty. Came out warm with a mild bland flavor. Other places in Northbridge are better. (Ordered the laksa because I saw a sight that rated this place as having the best laksa in Perth, but I think this place must have paid for this rating as this is far from the best laksa in Perth) I would recommend you rather go somewhere else for laksa. Japanese tofu came out sizzling with egg and some veg. It was good but the same from other Asian restaurants. Stir fry beef was ok with tender beef and veg. The honey pepper pork was very average, battered pork pieces in a light pepper honey sauce.<br/>My friend said he once had take away from here and was disappointed with the take away and that the food this time was better. The service was good and helpful.<br/>Overall this place seems to focus on advertising and promoting its self. Should focus on the food more. I would come here if it was my local and I did not want to drive 15min to somewhere else. Its ok with average food to service the local area but not worth driving if you are outside the local area.
PerthBlueSky
Hmmm....not sure what's the fuss with the Curry Laksa. It's ok. Tasty but not enough spices. Disappointing for a dish that wins awards. Would have been a better experience if we had gone with lower expectation :)<br/>
Williespants
Nice suburban hawker restaurant. It's really popular amongst the locals here and they get alot of dine ins and takeaways. Their hawker choices are pretty decent, I like their laksa (which they promote) and also the fried vermicelli noodles (not many do this well). Their dinner dishes for sharing are on the average side though, but I do like the herbal chicken dish - a specially. Prices are reasonable here, so it's worth a try.
LittleAsianGirl
Absolutely love their curry laksa. One of the best I have had in Perth. My own father also requests to come here when he is in town. I also like their hor fun. It is darker than most places make. But it is delicious.
Vee Kee
Dishes such as the fried noodles, curry laksa, fried rices dishes are quite good. The oil is probably not the freshest but still acceptable. However we came here one evening and ordered the sharing type dishes and it was very disappointing.
The Urban Bento
Years have passed since we were last here.. flavours were good but servings were on the smaller side. Also... the service was a little lacking despite the "doorbell" system. The same one as paparich where you ring the bell for assistance though... noone seemed to come around and we had to ring the bell several times. I do like the decor here!
Marie
Been coming here for years now and the food does not disappoint no matter which dish you pick. The curry laksa is the specialty here for lunch but the Tom Yum Bee Hoon is done exceptionally well.
Dee Dee
Been here twice. One time for the Sang Mee and another time for Hor Fun. The Sang Mee is crispy and fragrant. The Hor Fun has a charred-fragrant (wok hei) to it and it's my favourite. The Bo Bo Cha Cha is good too.
LittleGirlBigFood
Who isn't a fan of cheap food?? I know that as I eat a lot I certainly am. The chilli chicken with rice was delicious. This is my go to at chinese places of this nature and this place did it justice.
Libera Vita
Believe it or not: we were here twice in a day!!! This was unusual for me, but my mom was so in love with their Bubur cha-cha and couldn't wait to taste the other food on the menu. My verdict after those two visits: A small Malaysian-Chinese place worth going and coming back to!<br/><br/>The list of food is decent, highly varied. The price is reasonable for the area. I like their Fried Kuey Teow, Mee Goreng, Sambal Lala, Eggplant Claypot, and of course, like my mom, Bubur cha-cha. My son loves their Salted and peppered chicken. The restaurant is famous for their Curry Laksa, and I must admit, for someone who's not much into Laksa, I quite enjoy the dish.<br/><br/>Parking could be challenging, I must say, during weekdays and when it's fully packed. The restaurant was very clean, even the toilets look inviting! The staff members were really nice and would go their way to ensure our special order was fulfilled: "Vegetarian Mee Goreng, please," "No sweet potato in the Bubur, please" and even let my son chose his drink from the fridge. <br/><br/>As said earlier, yes, I'd definitely go back and recommend this place to my friends. If I could, I'd give it a rating of 5, but only if the restaurant would just concentrate on the dishes they do best (for example, the Western fried chicken was disappointing...) All in all, I hope the chefs will always keep the taste consistent. <br/><br/>Thank you for your service peeps!! And keep up the good work.
Anonymonster
Coming here you gotta know what to order people! Look for the thumbs up signs next to the food titles and don't stick to chinese food you can get elsewhere!<br/><br/>1. Ganxiang Chicken<br/>2. Curry Fish 'Head'<br/>3. Honey Black Pepper Pork Chops<br/><br/>All great options you must try at some point visiting here!<br/><br/>Commendations also go tog<br/>1. Kuey Tiao<br/>2. Sizzling Japanese Beancurd and Salted Fish<br/>3. Laksa<br/>4. Peking Spare ribs!<br/><br/>Love this place coz it's so close to home! A hidden local gem!
Pris
3.3 rating.<br/>Not bad, average value.<br/>Curry fish head was good and tasty, sizzling tofu was ok and spinach with century egg was a tad on salty side. We were served complimentary prawn crackers. <br/>Overall value - those three dishes plus rice (no drinks as we had tap water) plus 3 dessert bubur Cha Cha (tasted ok, a bit sweet and the yam and sweet potato was a bit hard) costed us $91.20 including credit card 2%surcharge . Average value but portions were not too small. Will return if nearby.
Emz
I like the food here but the prices are a little on the higher end. So back to try and did a takeaway. Disappointed by the portion. The noodles looks lost in the box. Lots of gravy but not much noodles to accompany it. <br/><br/>Maybe they should be more generous with their portions.
Christina Tan
Delightful little restaurant tucked in a quiet suburb but surprises with delectable dishes especially fish wing curry and mince eggplant in claypot. Fish wings are battered before added to curry filled with ladies fingers which can be doused in rice.
Feli SK-R
This is our local Chinese restaurant if we cant be bothered to travel into Northbridge or Victoria Park. <br/><br/>Try their homemade tofu and the duck in plum sauce. <br/><br/>Rachel is super friendly and very accommodating.
N.e.k.o
Definitely one of my comfort food favourites, and the best thing is it is close to home, so this is where I run to when I don't feel inspired in the kitchen (which happens pretty often!). <br/>I particularly love the chicken kwey tiaw, ask for the chilli to be mixed in together and have it extra charred! The colour is darker and taste is different from most places where it's normally just sweet. <br/>Another favourite is the crispy noodle (sang mee?) - they give generous portion, noodle is just right, not too thin or fat, and egg sauce is not too thick & sickening. <br/>I've tried a lot of varieties of their other dishes and they are all generally quite tasty, suits my palette well. The only thing that I can comment on is that sometimes the restaurant (food) smell can be quite strong and sticks to your hair & clothes if you stay there for too long.

Now I have been here numerous times before this whole 6 weeks off gluten thing started and I always had good experiences. The best part is being able to still come here when I can't have gluten. Staff was aware of the options I could have (although the menu does not mark them) and manager was well versed with the food make up (I was not sure of the fish paste in my dish so I asked) of any questions. They welcomed my gluten free requirements with open arms and I was delighted to chow down my fried vermicelli.
Sharon
The food is good! Love the butter king prawn and "tie ban toufu". The fried pork is super super good~ the staffs are friendly. probably will come again~
Laksa Boy 07
Very bland coffee, laksa soup lacked the curry "fragrance" , curry chicken is worst than curry in the food court . Last of all with the clay pot yee meinis not much taste and why using all the ingredient from a chop suey?
John Lee
Went there for lunch today..... and .....<br/><br/>Their standard has dropped rapidly. Not sure if they have changed their chef but the food are really out of standard and lack of flavours.<br/><br/>3 out of 10 for me today
Joyln
Best and affordable Chinese food. Best lasa in Perth! Egg horfun is very good too. <br/>Fried chicken wings are juicy and Japanese Tofu is my son all time favorite. Thank you for great food Home Town, we will be back again!
Alexander Floyd
Best Asian food in the city. We used to live a few houses away but have sinced moved. Now we drive the 45mins because nothing even comes close.
Charlovestoeat24
I dont know how this restaurant got an award.. Hometown Kitchen is well known for being the best Laksa in Perth according to SBS. And yes, they do make a good Laksa. However, the other dishes are overpriced and below average. The first time I went, i wasnt impressed. I came one more time to give it another go and it still left me disappointed. Not going back again.

Disappointing. I've eaten at this Restaraunt a few times and the food has always been lovely, but tonight I ordered a home delivery, and it was terrible! Ordered Sweet n Sour Pork which was over cooked and so dry it was inedible, lemon chicken was also dry but ok with the sauce, however the sauce tasted terrible. Special fried rice was really only rice, ham with a bit of soy sauce where was the rest of it? Very disappointing considering my past experience with the food from here. Hopefully just a one off.
Charles Malins
Tasty, good value food. Home Town Kitchen is one of our "local" restaurants and one that we have tried on a number of occasions. We never have had any complaints about the quality and quantity of the dishes with the Salt and Pepper squid a particular favourite. It is always very tender and has a nice "kick".<br/>There are a couple of minor quibbles that need raising. Firstly, it would be nice to be offered an ice bucket to keep our wine cool and secondly, the habit of sticking rough notices, written on photo copy paper, to the walls with blue tac takes away from the otherwise tasteful decor. The photos and artefacts are great but the amateurish notices are disappointing.<br/>Finally, on two of the dozen or two occasions that we have visited, my wife and I have experience the unpleasant side effects of having MSG in some dishes. Surely the flavours are tasty enough with the use of spices that there is no need to add MSG as a flavour enhancer.
Asianmonkeylol
Disgusting food. I'm usually quite linient when it comes to food. I ordered a black pepper chicken with rice. There was no taste at all, the chicken had been preciously fried and then served in what they call black pepper. Couldnt swallow the second bite. Everything else was fine.<br/>Not value for money, would not order that dish ever every ever again. If rather go to BAMBOO or Taurus in the willetton/parkwood area.
Eatwithhendri
Happy coz the food was yum! From mee goreng, spinacg with three types of egg, and sizzling tofu. All ticked the right boxes and authentic. However not so happy with the serving size that I wish could be slightly bigger..it was a great dining experience after all.
Drew Powers
Simple and yummy. Good food, reasonably priced, lots of chinese malaysian style specialities which most other restaurants don't do
Jessica Farquhar
No complaints. Nice food, about $10 - 13 for lunch menu. Nicely cooked Malaysian food. Not extraordinary, but you get exactly what you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants in Perth. The water served with our meals was ice cold which was a nice touch.<br/>The only thing I would like to see improved upon is the range of food for lunch & price of drinks should be a bit lower (currently it's $5 for cendol). I feel like the quality of food is better than Bamboo House (on Collins Rd) for example, but the range isn't as extensive. Decorations need a little bit of work as well, but I don't really care as long as the food is good.
Kristy
I've been here many times and only thing I could say is TOTALLY LOVE IT!! Friendly staff especially the chatty and friendly lady boss. Herbal chicken, laksa & prawn toast is a MUST! Best in town. Seriously herbal chicken is even the best that I ever tried. Love the modern design and clean layout, it is different from the rest of Chinese restaurant which normally old fashion and awful moldy smell. 5 stars dine out place!!

Poor phone etiquette - can hardly speak or understand English, and rude.

You'll get a good meal here. Have been coming to this restaurant for few years. The curry fish is very nice and we can alway expect a good meal here at reasonable prices.
Pigsy
A nice suburban find right near my home. Good service, food was impressive and very reasonable on price. I have only tried 2 dishes so can't speak for the entire menu. I will return.

This would have to be THE BEST Malaysian cuisine in PERTH. Have been here three or four times cannot fault anything. Food is AMAZING SUPERB. Xx
Dim Sum Q
I would say it's definitely one of the best curry laksa and best sambal kangkung in Perth. It's even better than the one back home in Malaysia. The portion was generous too. Took parents from Malaysia there, and they enjoyed their meal. Definitely a place to go for if you're after fantastic Malaysian food.
Arik
Laksa Curry was fantastic. Friendly staffs.
Shirley Byham
Worst special fried rice ever! Rice was gluggy 2 prawns and a few pieces of beef. No veg at all! cheap but I didn't care about the price, got my $7.50 worth. Not very special.
Bomberman
Good food. Good price for lunch menu. Not cheap for dinner menu. Average service.

Authentic food, good service. My mum and I ate there on Sunday, we had curry laksa and mee goreng. My grandfather ran a curry laksa stand in Penang, and my mum makes a killer curry laksa, so I know a good curry laksa when I have it. This curry laksa is the nicest I've had in Perth since Malaysia Garden's Riverton Forum days. Ask for extra chilli - the burn and taste is reminiscent of good old hawkers. I would only suggest more beansprouts, but I'm sure the kitchen would accommodate if I asked.<br/><br/>The mee goreng was fantastic - it had the smoky, dry and charred flavour, without being burned. I always like to eat mee goreng, but I find that many places make it too sweet, or too soggy, or smother it in tomato sauce. This mee goreng was just right, and of course, amazing with the extra chilli. <br/><br/>The service was good, solid Chinese restaurant service - friendly and efficient. Overall, I was happy to eat there, and had a good eating experience and will definitely be going back. I want to try the other dishes on offer, and am looking forwards to the fish head bee hoon next time.

Laksa was very average, too much fish sauce and too much chilli oil letting it down

It's my first visit but it's enough to turn me off with their poor crowd management on a Saturday night. The lady boss gave the first available seat to the person behind us even though I've already told the service crew on the number of pax and a table was available to us. So in the end we were given a table which was meant for 2 for the 3 of us where one of the pax needs to sit on a stool between us and the next table. That was their extra "chair". Food was average for us but the whole experience was bad as the service crew kept squeezing through that small space between us and the next table to the point stuff has to be moved to prevent breakage whenever their crew "walk" past.

Nice and friendly staffs! Food is satisfying. Commented by a homesick Malaysian

Good food, friendly service, prices on the high side. I have been to Hometown kitchen a few times with family and friends. I find the service and food here consistently good. Dishes that I order regularly include the fish wing (head) curry and their Hometown special tofu. The lady boss who is normally at the counter is also very friendly, and often comes over for a short chat and just to check that things are going well. <br/><br/>The only reason that stops me from going to Hometown more regularly is their prices. I find their prices to be higher than other places, for food of the same type and quality. I do note, however, that their service has always been good, and the premium you pay here can sometimes be overlooked as being the cost of good service and feeling welcome.

Bad food and bad prices. Tiny dish sizes but its ok because it isn't edible.

Hard to beat!!. Good to see 99% of the reviews for this place are positive, we are locals and dine here regularly, never a complaint! Excellent food, excellent service and reasonable prices. This place is fast getting known by people from far and wide. Just one small negative - when it is real busy they do tend to get a bit flustered and the service may suffer, but what the hell, the quality of food makes up for it!

Not bad for a suburban restaurant. Love the red bean pancake dessert. Curry fish wings is nice. Would be great if its fish head. Homemade tofu is a must order, crispy on the outside soft inside. Will try the butter chicken and pork belly next time as recommended. Want to try their herbal chicken too. Lady boss very friendly. Place looks clean and spacious.

One of the Best Curry Laksa In Perth. Being an avid curry laksa fan, I decided to give HT Kitchen a try because so far the best laksa in the city in my opinion is the curry laksa in Munch Delight, South Perth. HT did not disappoint though. The servings of chicken, prawns, eggs etc were very generous I have to say and it's probably the most generous curry laksa I have ever come across here in Perth. The broth is flavorsome and spicy although the one in Munch Delight has a slight edge in this respect. Nevertheless it was an awesome experience and I would definitely come back for the Curry Fish Head one evening as I am also a big fan of CFH. Price wise it is exactly the same as Munch Delight i.e. $10.80 per bowl. Its definitely worth a try for those who fancies curry laksa !!!

Nice restaurant set up and the food was not too bad. We tried the pork belly and butter chicken. Price was ok, but not as cheap as mentioned on the urbanspoon page. Might go there again but might not.

Food crap, service bad, price expensive. I have party last Friday. I felt very disappointed. Fish head curry is bad, only spicy, no flavor, try ' 津津' in Bateman, '阿旺美食' in bull creak, then you know what is the best. 'Spicy pork belly' is even worse, taste horrible. The service is bad, no welcome greeting, they do not care what customer feel. they just want to rush you finishing your food.<br/>Price is too expensive due to bad Service, bad food. I believe that any Chinese restaurant food in Willetton is better than hometown Chinese restaurant. I won't come here anymore.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!. I am a super regular~once a week is a must! My husband and i will never get sick of the menu there!:D We have so far tried many different dishes, none of them have made us disappointed. I love especially the baba tofu, caixiang tofu, special hometown fried tofu (I can only rmb the names in chinese LOL), Ganxiang chicken, chicken rice, herbal chicken, the fried pork....so many! The staff are very helpful and efficient, not to mention about the ladyboss, she's like the friendliest lady boss we have ever met haha~if you have no idea what you would like to have, she will always recommend nice ones for you! ^^<br/><br/>Just then I read about a negative review by this guy, Jon Smith..I think he's just here to sabotage! Everything there is nice and clean..he left two comments and said he found a rat tail in a bowl of noodle, and never going back..yet he went back for the second time and left another negative comment?? wat the heck..I can't just sit here and do nth..

Cheap & Good. Ever since I introduce my inlaw to this place, he hasn't stop going to pack the dishes!<br/>One time he tried packing the Fish Head curry and man that was sweating hot! A different style of curry fish head (which has slight tamarind sour taste) and very fresh fish head pieces and lotsa vegetables.<br/>I dined there once for lunch and I really miss the Yee Mee - would love to go back for more if it wasn't so far from where I live

Takeaway. Have only had takeaway from here and not eaten in the restaurant. Food is excellent and the beef satay a standout dish. Portions are good and ingredients fresh and plentiful. Not sure if I would want to eat in the restaurant though as it always seems so noisy when I go to pickup my takeaway. A family favourite for us when we want an asian meal.

Nice food. Ordered the curry laksa for lunch on saturday and it was good. generous serve of chicken and fish cake and plenty of bean sprouts. the curry is flavorsome and spicy!<br/><br/>service was OK but did notice the wait staff don't pay enough attention to clearing tables once patrons have left. it can make the restaurant look 'dirty' and messy even tho the decor is quite nice and modern.

Family Feed. Have been to you before with just a couple of us and loved it so I took my family from NZ there as a large group and they loved it! Service was good and you just kept the dishes flowing...thanks for a great night and nice food!

Absolute crap, service was crap, food was crap. Cheap attempt at trying to pull off decent food. Never going back. Don't eat here.

Memories. Visited this place on a Saturday as the boss wanted to eat curry fish with our friends. Arrived at 1730. Sat down and placed our orders. According to the boss, there was a dish which is chicken fried with curry leaves which is a staple Singaporean/Malaysian dish that is not available here.<br/><br/>Did the ordering. Curry fish smelt nice and was not too spicy. The chicken fried with curry leaves was different but not knock your socks off delicious. Beef in spring onions was a fail safe dish to cater to the young palates. The homemade tofu was divine. It was nice, soft, mushy and totally tasty. <br/><br/>The downside? For some reason, if you sit facing the door, you will get a faceful of sunlight when eating. Not a biggie but can be quite irritating due to the high traffic. And as other reviewers have posted, the dishes tend to be the expensive side. Those 4 dishes, rice for 4 adult, 1 child and chinese tea came to $90.<br/><br/>So... ... all I can say is while it is nice to have memories and reminisce about them, they don't come cheap.<br/><br/>Revisited this place on the 13/01/2013.<br/>OMG! What a change. Ordered the curry fish as before. But this time round, the curry was very weak and watery and there was no fragance at all.<br/><br/>Ordered 3 other dishes to suit the little ones. Pork spare ribs, mixed stirred fried vegetables and fried chicken. I am absolutely sure that the portion size has decreased since we have last visited. However, the prices if nothing have increased. Also as we were sitting at the back of the restaurant, they have put up a screen of some sort and it makes getting attention very hard as the servers all tend to congregate at the counter. <br/><br/>Not sure if it is because since between visits, they have won an award from Trip Advisor which is displayed very prominent in their menu but perhaps they have let success gone to their head and slack off. So unfortunately for me, I would have now to revise my opinion to a thumbs down.<br/><br/>And to cap it off, 4 dishes, rices and tea was a grand total of $110. That amount with reduced portion sizes and sub standard food was a hard earned lesson for us.

Hometown Kitchen. Got asked to go to lunch with John Lee, his wife and another Chef mate Peter, WOW very impressed, we had the fish head curry, spicy pork belly, Chinese greens, crispy fried pork belly, kuey teow and a bean curd dish plus a squid dish, BIG BIG serves, with full bellies we all shared a Chinese pancake and icecream, i also requested Teh C "iced tea Malaysian Style", not on the menu but to the staff, no problem and it was great, all in all i will be back there and so will my friends
The Foodie
The foodie. The only quality dish we found was the fish wings curry, Although we came at a time when the restaurant wasn't crowded, we found ourselves to be invisible. If not for us trying most politely to get the attention of the waitress, we would probably be waiting there for 20 min before getting to make our orders. Oddly, I was told that the owner is very friendly. We probably wouldn't be back for a long time.

Generally good Malaysian food. Food here in general is pret tasty and flavoursome. Service is prompt and dishes come out really quickly. Dishes is slightly over prices, but portions are very generous. Decor is lovely inside.

Suburban chinese with a modern twist. The problem with most suburban chinese restaurants is the often old and tacky decor - in need of a serious revamp. Hometown kitchen has a nice modern feel to it whilst not trying too hard.<br/><br/>The dishes are very generously sized for dinner - 3 dishes meant that the 4 of us were utterly stuffed. They do have lunch specials but I didn't find these to be as good value for money. I prefer Eureka or Malaysia Garden for a lunchtime noodle feed.<br/><br/>The flavours are good. BYO wine at $1 per person.
