Review Thanh Dat Restaurant - Springvale

Shane Dell
Best fried rice around however beef dishes although very flavorful use very fatty and grisly cheap meat. Staff are generally good but the owner with the toupe is an arrogant prick if your anything other than Asian.
Paul Young
Was served a rice paper roll with a hair in it. Told staff who took it away only to return it saying it wasn't a hair. I think they expected us to continue eating it even after it was handled by multiple people trying to assess it. We had to physically remove the hair in front of them, from still inside the roll, to prove it to them. Then they simply replaced only the one rice paper roll with no apology. A hair in food is not an unforgivable mistake but the treatment we received after that was unforgivable.

Cheap Vietnamese food with prompt - if blunt - service. Generous portions, though not exactly the most hygienic place.

The best Salty Fish Fried Rice!! Love this restaurant. Definitely in my top 5 places to eat! 5/5 all the way!
Gavin Southern
A standard cheap Vietnamese restaurant that we have been to 3-4 times now. There's no "wow" factor but, it's still a good meal and worth checking out.

Customer serivce non-existent. They just take your order with a pissed off face. It would be worth it if there food was anything better than a 2/10 too.

Huge menu with lots of choice. Staff are always friendly and food is delicious. :)

Beautiful clean Pho, friendly service and a great selection of dishes

Great place if you want cheap Vietnamese food that actually tastes great.

The restaurant itself is not the prettiest and lacks character, however, it is huge and the service is very good and very quick, so I don't mind. We ordered the tofu and asked for it to not have egg which the waiter made note of. Shortly after, the head chef approached us and kindly told us that there is egg in the tofu, but before we could grab a menu to re-order, he added on that he would run over to the supermarket across the road and buy some eggless tofu for us! He was so happy to help us out and we were very grateful for going out of his way to help us. What a guy!

Needless to say, the service here is impeccable. You are made to feel very welcome from the moment you step inside. Fuse that with delicious, affordable Vietnamese food and you get our new favourite spot for an Asian lunch in Springvale. Just don't mind the distinct smell, you'll get used to that.

Picked the hugest restaurant on the street for dinner. Located right at the corner junction. Looked pretty impressive from the outside. But what a disappointment! Food was tasteless and bland. Needed more flavour to give it the oomph factor. Seafood in the hot pot tasted stale, and definitely not fresh. BBQ pork had more sinew than meat. Undoubtedly cheap but never again! Serves me right for not reading the many negative Zomato reviews before I picked this place!

Big place but im not impressed with the food. Try avoid their sweet and sour fish soup, it tasteless and not fresh, the rest i tried was not horrible, but below average

Not the best restaurant to offer in Springvale. I think it was potentially the vinegar that sits at each table, but it produced quite an offensive smell that wafted through the entire place(as big as it was!). Whilst the food was delivered quite quickly, it was presented better than it tasted. Service was rude. How disappointing.

Best Vietnamese restaurant in Springvale! Massive bowl of pho is about $10. Special diced beef is a must. Bustling busy restaurant, don't go for a first date - too noisy. Quick service - you'll be in and out in 45 minutes. And don't be surprised if your main course comes out before your entree.

A fairly popular Vietnamese restaurant during dinner hours, can be fairly hard at times to find a seat. Restaurant has the typical Asian tavern feel to it and service is nothing amazing. Although service and the restaurant it self weren't too great, the food was fairly nice, especially their Thand Dat style broken rice and crispy chicken with orange rice. The complementary fish sauce was a bit bland and the phổ broth was standard. Overall, a some what disappointing experience.

A so so Vietnamese joint - the food isn't wow, but for the price it does the job. A little inconsistent and the nuoc mam is a little bland the time I went. There are better joints around the area though, so I'm hestitant to return. Service was okay.
Neko.cam
A fairly large restaurant for the area, and popular amongst the westerners, but far from amazing overall. The staff are generally nice and the food is generally quite good - especially the spicy chicken ribs which are actually amazing.

Decent restaurant that seems to cater more for the western tastebuds instead of the more traditional asian tastebuds.

It serves up a smattering of everything, from pho, to rice dishes, to noodles and Chinese dishes. It's not too bad but it's far from the best in Springvale.

I'm generally happy with their service, especially the food. When I lived close, I used to go there a few times. The pho is obviously not their speciality, as I can tell the next shop makes much better pho. But other food tastes good enough. We went again last Saturday after such a long time.

I have eaten here several times with family and the food varies from okay to just decent. My favourites include the cashew nut & prawns, chicken & sweet corn soup and seafood & fried noodles.

However, that being said, the cleanliness of the place is DESPICABLE, to the point where I now only order as takeaway rather than eat in. The tables, chairs, napkin dispensers and menus are extremely sticky as are their eating utensils. Would it hurt to wipe them down (ever)?! It is absolutely revolting and sub-standard. The worst is their old sauce dispenser bottles with broken off tips, fraying labels, extreme stickiness and accumulated fluff, hairs and the like (please throw out and replace immediately). This is where they need much improvement.

0.5 of a point extra for Asian Johnny Depp's (you know who I'm referring to) entertainment value.

A great place to get a feed. Quick and friendly service. Great price and has Eftpos. (unlike many of the other vendors nearby)

Great value and they are also accommodating, taking special requests. (My wife's favourite Kangkong dish (Water spinach) even though it is not on menu)
Today I went here with my parents to celebrate their valentines day. Thanh Dat was quite busy due to today's festivities. But my parents and I still had a speedy and lovely service.

My meal for today was the beef and Chinese broccoli fried rice noodles. The food was nice, especially how crunchy the broccoli was. But I guess I wasn't amazed with the meal. The service overall was nice and I quickly became full from the lunch. It's a nice restaurant to go back again, but also a last resort place if I don't know where else to eat in Springvale.

The place I always fall back on when I can't decide which Vietnamese restaurant to eat at...cheap, fast service and no fuss. It's no Flower Drum but great place for a quick Vietnamese fix, that is, $9 pho. The only thing that I will gripe about is the MSG they put in, which makes some of us feel a bit dizzy after consuming.

Back when I was younger, we used to go to Springvale a lot more than now. Apart from the yelling, vegetables on the ground, wet floors in the seafood shops, $5 haircuts, the food is what I remember the most. Vietnamese Style Broken Rice - $10.00. Thanh Dat is one of the larger restaurant in Springvale, and it has more Western customers than some of the other restaurants, probably because it seems quite a bit cleaner.

Used to be good once upon a time but not anymore. The pho was quite boring (considering you're in Springvale the pho has to be of a certain standard) and the fried noodles were lacking the wok-breath. However I found it rather amusing in the way the boss man was barking orders to his staff

I ate here before was alright but sadly I came for a quick snack and found glass in my wonton sadly I have been put off this place. I was compensated with a free can of coke witch a don't drink I hope they fix the issue and it doesn't happen again

Another Asian stalwart in Springvale. This restaurant is located on a corner and is always busy! The menu is huge, the variety is plentiful and the food is delicious. This is a regular lunch venue for local workplaces or a great dinner venue for families. I always have the vegetarian rice noodles and they haven't failed me yet!

the first time me and my boyfriend went here, everything was so good. Authentic rice paper rolls, noodles, bunbohue..
came for the second time, everything was just terrible. Loose rice paper rolls. It was worst than my 7 years old nephew make it. service was slow.. just the quality is inconsistent

The place seems popular with families and groups of youngsters of both Asian and non-Asian background. We would go back if we want to have pho and are in the area.

For us, it is very unlikely to revisit this Thành Dat.

I don't think Thanh Dat deserves its terrible rating; sure the food isn't amazing, but it's decent, the service is fast (but not necessarily friendly) and the restaurant itself seemed relatively clean. They serve quick and cheap food, and don't advertise otherwise. That's reasonable to me.

I don't know why this place is so popular because it was pretty full when I was there. The food isn't riveting, in fact it's merely just passable. Although I'm not quite sure what all the other places are like around Springvale, it could possibly be the b

Shocked at the low percentage!!. I absolutely love this place! I come all the way from Mount eliza to get my pho here!
I'm a vegan so my order is quite a fussy one yet they always get it correct and are really friendly and polite!
I need to order my pho with just plain water and ensure that it has only veggies and doesn't come into contact with meat.

They always get it exactly right And it's delicious!
Not been disappointed so far!

Rudest service ever. Rubbish experience. The staff are the rudest I have ever seen and the owner is worse. Came here with my partner and the owner sat us on a table with another couple. This is despite the restaurant being only a third full. He came back and had a and made us move after we had gotten up to sit at a free 2 seated table. Food is nothing special. Try pho chu le 2 doors down. Much better all round.

Its gone down hill.. Not sure what's happened to this place. The soup use to be my favourite but this time around the soup was cold and the bowls have gotten smaller yet.
Unfortunately i wont b returning.

The service makes the food bad full stop. Also the man has a killer wig.

The worst restaurant in springvale. This restaurant is the most horrible place to go in Springvale. The service are so bloody rude as hell, everything are over price, the food tastes like washing detergent. Not recommended! DO NOT GO HERE! Only idiot will go here.

Just like to give my two cents for this restaurant here. I personally do not think the food is that bad, especially for the price you pay. It's neither great nor horrible. Just right in the middle... Service? I do think it's reasonable enough. Try lunch time if you can. Their service tends to be better than dinner time. Still recommend this place to you all though.

I can't belive this restaurant still open. Most horrible food!!! It taste like the food was 20days old. Unbeliveable!!!

Cheap Pho. This is our go-to Pho place, when we're tired of studying at Uni, or just feel like eating Pho in Springvale. The reason we end up coming here is that it usually ends up being open late, or at least late by Springvale standards. You can still get a meal by 9PM or so here. The Pho here is great. I keep ordering the Combination Special because I keep forgetting what it is actually and every time the waiter/waitress asks me if I'm sure I want that because it includes the insides. Sure they say it in broken english, but I still understand what they're saying so its great, they still stopped me from eating Cow insides! Generally, I find the service great. Obviously, as you can imagine, it is lacking in certain aspects, but for a cheap eatery, I really couldnt care! The Pho costs less than ten bucks for a big bowl. The first time we came, we both needed to go to the toilet and it was about 9 and the Shopping Centre security guard was closing up but let us use it and then told us the people at Thanh Dat had closed the door to get inside from the Shopping Centre and that we had to walk around to their entry, which was very helpful! Then afterwards this guy with pitbulls followed us around as we took a walk around Springvale which was weird. And made our Thanh Dat experience memorable!

K

Went there for the first time today in many years. The rice for the Hainanese chicken was dry, the chicken looked past its prime and ginger was far from a generous amount. The Bun Bo Hue was bland beyond control... The only decent thing was the Vietnamese iced coffee, and a shout to the heavens had that have failed, too!

The last time I was there was a few years ago but I still have nightmares of the waitress's long maroon fake fingernails and ladyboy make-up. Despicable service. White people get preferential treatment, everyone else seems to get ignored. Had a party of 12 last time... they seated us at the largest table, only problem, not enough chairs. Took a waiter almost 20 minutes to find a chair. Don't know what the problem was. To top that off, got served with super-greasy food that was not very appetising. Phuc dat.

Dislike. Ordered hainamese chicken, i have no idea what they sent out, 1/4 of salty chicken that was poorly cooked? other than the hints of salt i was tasting i didn't taste much else. service was non existent.

I don't understand why the reviews are so bad? This is one of the best places i know of i come here almost ever friday. Quick service and the food is amazing.

Very Terrible Experience. I just had a terrible experience with this restaurant. Firstly, the service there is really really BAD. A table next to us made an order and the owner was so rude and it's seem like he doesn't understand a piece of English, made twice wrong orders and didn't even say Sorry to his customers. They have to except what the stupid owner ordered. Then I saw a cook cough and spit on the floor in the kitchen which made me wanted to vomit. And the most terrible thing I have ever seen is that in my bowl of noodle soup (egg noodle required but brought out rice noodle) had a piece of tissue and a toothpick inside. YUCK. Everyone, please do not enter this terrible restaurant.

Food Review. Diners have voted with their feet - there was not one Asian diner in the place when we were there this evening - a confirmation of the truly awful food - used to be OK some 12 months or more ago - now the food is just terrible.

Of the 5 dishes we ordered, most were very poorly cooked - my bowl of noodles (a very simple dish) I had to send back 3 times - first the type of noodle was wrong (the waiter was then not available to rectify the order as he was eating his dinner so the waitresses got it wrong twice - serving rice noodles instead of the requested egg noodles; then on top were two lousy pieces of chicken breast - my cat would eat more than that!

When this was pointed out to the manager, he was not int he least interested - no wonder they have lost all of their clientele - it used to be packed all the time.

Urging all prospective diners - not worth the visit - food and service truly lousy

Great for Pho and Coffee. My Mum and I go to Thanh Dat for Pho at least once a month. The staff are very friendly and the service is fast. The Pho and the Vietnamese Coffee is also great. And a good price too. Will continue to go there in the future.

Amazing! Love this place, spring rolls & noodle soup brilliant. will be back over & over again

The chance of me visiting that place again - ZERO. Ordered a Hainames chicken rice, turn out to be a massive piece of unchopped, over-cooked boiled chicken clamed on a massive place of steam rice, decoreated with 2 tiny thing slices of tomato with no souce or anything... this is what they call the "Hainames Chicken" on the menu.

Worst experience ever! Everything about this restaurant is horrible. The food was a complete turn off! Not one thing we ordered tasted okay. They give Vietnamese cuisine a bad name.

WASTE OF TIME. Experience at restaurant was terrible. The cashier swiped my credit card twice. I told her that was a double entry but she remained silent.Spoke to the boss and he was not at all sorry. He arrogantly said to come back tomorrow and not to waste his time. Called the bank and verified that they had swiped twice. When i wanted to pass to the telephone for the boss to speak with the bank, he pretended that nothing was wrong and did not corporate with the bank. This bickering was only for $33. If the boss was gentleman enough, he would have offered me the refund immediately. Nothing said and pushed me out of the restaurant. This is unbelievable.

Horrible experince!. I was very unhappy with nearly everything at this restaurant. The service was very bad. The first entree came followed by the 1st main then we waited about 5 minutess asked where the other entree was and then waited another 10minutes or so for that to come. Then 10 minutes later the second main came and finally our drinks as well. The food was very bland and tasteless and the following day i was throwing up all day. I am very upset at this dining experience and will never go here again nor recommend anyone to.
