Review Galleon Cafe - St Kilda

Phoebe Chua
Breakfast at Galleon was incredible! Warm, quick service and really nice vibe. We ordered the banana praline pancakes, smoked salmon bagel and big breakfast. The bagel is good, but the big breakfast and pancakes were outstanding — better than anything we tried in Melbourne CBD. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Breakfast was busy (as probably are other times as well). Classical St Kilda. Good food at good prices. Coffee was excellent. Seating inside or out. Pet friendly.
Timothy Teo
Popular breakfast place specially during weekends. Buzzing with chatter in live makes this cafe full of character. Indoor and outdoor available.

A great place for breakfast. We were staying locally, in an AirBNB and called in here. Very good eggs benedict and a good porridge. Fast service. Good coffee. What more could you ask for? Highly recommended.
Quincy Malesovas
Down to earth cafe serving home style food. I like this place because it’s not too trendy not too pretentious - it feels very comfortable yet is still quality. My favourite dish is the sweet potato and feta fritter, which comes with a tall pile of spinach and a poached egg.

Lovely spot for breakfast. The food was delicious, plenty of options to personalise your dish. Eggs Benny had perfectly poached eggs and crispy bacon. The French toast had some innovative flavours including ricotta, lemon cream and pistachio praline. Staff are okay but you can tell they are under the pump- no time for pleasantries or to stop and answer a quick question (like where to queue for a table!). Little ordering mistakes like coffee came out quickly but they forgot my tea - had to ask for it again twice. Overall though a pleasant experience and great food.

The Cafe was really busy when we visited for breakfast with only one spare table. Despite this, the food was excellent, very little wait and service was fast and great. Coffee was great and juice very fresh. Highly recommend.

Tried this place because it was around the corner from my hostel, and I ended up going every day I was in town! Great coffee and delicious food- I tried the savory scone, the apple muffin, and a special porridge, and all were amazing! Staff were all extremely friendly as well, and they did great managing busy mornings.

Ah, i miss my st Kilda so much. Living in Prahran for five years I struggle from new pretentious over priced cafe to another. I recently had a stone cold benedict on impenetrable uncooked sourdough, with slimy pork belly at Middletown, and a similar but worse experience using cold pulled pork, freezing toast, over cooked eggs at Tall Timber. (Both for around $24 with pot of tea). Also at the former the manager actually greeted with that long disappeared clanger "how are we today?". I resisted saying "I don't know, how are you your majesty?". A simple bacon benedict at Galleon: hot, fresh, crisp bagel, hot crispy bacon bacon, eggs poached to perfection, hollandaise perfect. And the tea? Strong, hot, and 3 cups in the pot. And the price?? $17.80. Plus great friendly service, and alll this after 3pm on a Saturday. What's not to love?

We've always loved the food and vibe at Galleon. We moved to Canada for two years and the first breakfast we absolutely had to have as soon as we got back to Melbourne was right here! The food was spectacular, the coffee amazing, and the staff as friendly as ever. Loved that they haven't messed with their menu either. You have to try them. And if you need to wait for a table on the weekends - do it cos it is so worth it

Galleon has a really unique Melbourne feel to it. It's retro and has an awesome vibe without being hipster or try-hard. The staff are genuine and friendly, the food is brilliant quality at a great price with unique flavors. The coffee is great and well made and my friend enjoys their 'proper' chai latte. It's the only cafe where I'll wait for a table, because it's worth it.
Miranda Williams
Delicious homemade style cooking. I had the sweet potato feta hash breakfast and added beans! So damn tasty! And the coffee was nice and strong for my early morning start! Highly recommend! I will be back
Soreti Kadir
First visit today, loved the welcoming, humble vibe. Food was fantastic. Waiter was cute will be back, for the amazing halloumi, and maybe the waiter. Jks just the halloumi haha
Tash Nicol
Amazing food and atmosphere. We are here from interstate and this was the best place we found to eat in Melbourne.
Andrea Coath
Our coffee was exceptional and the food great. The vibe in the place was great and the staff really friendly and welcoming!!

Quality of the food and service never diminishes! Always a good meal
Mary Hecker
THE best breakfast I've ever eaten. Amazing, lovely staff, a fab vibe and well priced amazing food. Thank you so much!! We'll be back

My local hangout. I get the same thing from Galleon every time I go, consistency is amazing. Staff have always been extremely friendly even when it gets busy. I highly recommend going.
Carmen Cita
Quintessential Melbourne vibes. This place never disappoints: great coffee, tasty tucker, friendly service. Five stars!
David Goggin
Wow. They catered for me. I've been diagnosed with fructose and lactose intolerance along with having sibo which is a challenge as I'm very limited. Talk about fodmap friendly. Very happy right now and so is my tummy.

If you come to st kilda it's a must cafe to go for breakfast loved it
Tanja Baur
Came back today after years abroad. Still the best cafe on the south side. Homely friendly atmosphere & super delicious food!

I've been in Melbourne for two weeks on holiday and I've had breakfast about 6/7 times in this cafe. Excellent service and food plus they play excellent music! It has a great vibe too.
Wanda Wahini K
Great food and service. Would go back there again and again
Scott Kaufman
Really great food and the staff are always nice, the legend dude working with the hat that runs the floor dealt really well yesterday some pushy dickwads, well done we will be back for sure
Johnny
Very busy cafe in the heart of St. Kilda. Nothing fancy and actually not the greatest value. Clearly popular with some but personally I wouldn't return.

Top 5 breakfast places in Melbourne. Enough said.
Sophia
The BEST breakfast in Melbourne in my opinion. Nice staff, no wank, just home style delicious food. Everything I’ve had off the menu so far has been 10/10. DO NOT miss the sweet potato hash brown thing. If you want to insty your food don’t come here.

This was recommended to us by a friend as it is apparently a St Kilda institution. It has a great vibe and I love the retro mismatched furniture. It was really busy on a Thursday lunch but the staff were smiling. Good coffee and food options.

Came here for brunch . The coffee was great but too much spread of chocolate on top. Work on your presentation:). I ordered eggs Florentine with spinach and cheese and bacon . It was lovely and I recommend it. Expect to spend 15-20 bucks a head for brunch . Not cheap but pretty good:).

Went to St Kilda to catch up with a friend, he introduced me to this place. I wasn’t hungry at that time but couldn’t resist to order something to eat beside a coffee. He recommended me to try the meatballs. I must say, it was one of the best meatballs I’ve ever tasted in Melbourne. Great coffee too. The place was pumping. Didn’t take too long to get a table for us. Good value .. Highly recommended!
Mel
Went there for breakfast with our pup. Around 4 tables for 2 that were outdoor. Great coffee, hot chockee and food! Great service too. Only thing to note, smoked salmon was a little too salty. Will definitely be back again to try the other dishes!

This place is an institution and well known in St Kilda. Classically decorated with. A 1950’s style with booths and tables it’s a nice place to come for an meal.
Went here with a vegan and vegetarian and they couldn’t stop raving about the place. Prices are good too. Very affordable. Big shout out to staff who were fabulous. Gets busy so you may have to wait.
Dietaries catered for, just let staff know. Takeaway available. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Pram and stroller accessible. Parking is okay.
Suj
Nice food and drink for a reasonable price. The interior was really good too. Hand smoked salmon egg benny and espresso milkshake. The bagel was a little bit to tough to cut but the food was really nice.
Mrs Mark
Closer to a 4.5. This place was pumping on a Sunday morning but only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for two. We had the truffled eggs - delicious and generously portioned as well as the meatballs on toasted pide. Both were excellent.
Salomon Andres Anais Saavedra
Nice cafe in the heart of St Kilda. Classic Australia breakfast menu . Friendly and quick customer service . Not much to say about the food.
Jenny Lyons
The Galleon has the best coffee in Melbourne! My local go to 😁
The food is great and much cheaper than most melbourne cafes so definitely worth going to
Ozzy Kunnu
3.5 to be precise. Rustic, Casual and Chilled Out, a cafe that makes you feel at home.

We had Hot Chocolate, Chai Latte, Super Sailor and a Grilled Chicken Burger. Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful....and the cherry on the cake was that cute heart on the Hot Chocolate.

The only issue we had was that it could have been more cleaner than it was.

Attendants are so friendly and cool. Worth the money spent.

I absolutely love the vibe of this busy cafe on Carlisle Street! The vintage table and chairs, hand written labels and pops of orange brought about a lovely air of nostalgia :) Although busy on a Saturday afternoon we were seated quickly by the friendly staff.

The menu caters to vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free and even has free-range eggs and bacon which is great to see! We ordered the Super Sailor (smoked salmon, spinach, poached egg & chive mascarpone) and the Drunken Sailor's Big Brekky with usual accompaniments! Both were delicious and I particularly enjoyed my gluten-free toast and chive mascarpone [tricky word to spell! ;)].

Overall, this retro cafe has a great vibe and serves up delicious and very affordable breakfast/lunch! Definitely worth a visit to reminisce about the simpler days :)
@twogoodtoresist
Galleon is a great rustic cafe which doesn’t try too hard to be different but what they do, they do well. The banana pancakes are incredible. We love the sweet potato hash and if tofu is your thing, the tofu scramble is great too. Coffee is great and the prices aren’t too high!
Alex
A massive menu with such good pricing. I’ve been here a few times and cannot complain. The interior is quite eclectic and stereotypical to a hip St Kilda vibe. If you’re catering for lots of eating needs, this is the place to go!
Moetfan
This was THE BEST breakfast I can remember having in a very very long time. Every staff member was friendly and service was spot on. Coffee was perfect. Give this place a try ASAP!
Cathg1g2
Been going for 20 years and will continue to go for as long it has the great food and coffee and service - love the Sailor's breakfast and lemon curd pancakes, great coffee and lovely staff

Lucky
You can get good coffee here and food is ok... like ok. The staff look like customers and are very relaxed and no doubt for some customers this is perfect. There is nothing about Galleon I'd say is poor bar the state of the bathroom just middle of the road for a cafe. Definitely get your take away coffee here though.
Igor Nadj
Pancakes were heavy and too sweet. Would have liked fresh fruit rather than the icing sugar mix and real maple syrup. Decor, service and coffee were great.
Carly Hercus
Gr at breakfast very affordable. I had the egg and bacon sandwich for only $12 yummo, Mum had the big breakkie and it was huge, definitely value for money. Service was great and we loved the rustic atmosphere. We stayed at the cosmopolitan across the road, very convenient
Rooshka
Had brunch with my mother here and it wasn’t what we were expecting. The food was very simple. The sweet potato hash which I had very high expectations for was not that great. It seemed both undercooked on the inside and over cooked on the outside. The servers seemed rushed and would just quickly drop the food on the tables and go without a word. It was very lively and loud inside. The decor was interesting.
Dam Burger
This place hasn’t changed in 25 years... unlike me! I only had coffee on this visit so cannot comment on the food. Coffee was great! I’ll be back to eat soon.
Cassie Betteson
The food at the galleon always pleases! I had the banana, pistachio and vanilla pancakes, yum! Only thing I could say that could be better next time was that our cofffees and drinks (OJ AND Bloody Mary) didn't come out till we were nearly finished our meals!
FoodieGuru_770
Visited Galleon last week to visit a friend. What a funky place to eat and enjoy a good breakfast. I must try.

I had a plate with Salmon, Mushrooms and spinach and it tasted fresh, the staff were really on their game and the tea was lovely.

My friends had coffee, juice and eggs and they said the food was excellent.

I strongly recommend this place for breakfast. A must try.
Alex
Very nice coffee , the food was really delicious , it's very busy so very hard to get a table on the weekend . The staff are ok but could be better but I understand as there always under pressure
Cham
The Galleon is one of the highly recommended brunch places in St. Kilda. Can be a bit noisy especially when it's packed. You can never go wrong with their Galleon Style "bubble and squeak" with sausage and of course, coffee.
Bruce Collins
Have been having breakfast here for a number of years and always happy their coffee is consistently one of the best in the area and bubble and squeak with bacon great portion and tasty
Every on should try but be prepared to have to wait for table but well worth it staff great
PW Lou
I like the atmosphere. It's very relaxed and friendly. I had the bubble and squeak but unfortunately, I had food envy as although it was good. The sweet potato hash was a lot nicer!😥
Steve Fowler
I dream about the sweet potato hash brown and I wake up drooling. They do the simple things better than anyone, the poached eggs are perfect everytime and the toast comes pre buttered. Unreal!
BIRCHER QUEEN 👑
I couldn't believe how popular this place was when I visited! 15 minute wait for a table for 1 person. The waitress Tasman was the definition of good service - friendly and accommodating! The Bircher is normally served in a glass but Tasman kindly got the chef to place it in a bowl and added a sprinkle of granola on top as per my request. The Bircher was a little bit runny for my liking. It was very sweet which I liked but it may be overpowering for some. Next time I'll try the porridge :)

Love the cozy vibes from the cafe~ Great place to just hang around and catch up with friends over brunch. Had the eggs Benedict and my Friend ordered the meatballs with mushrooms on the side. The bagel was buttered and crisped up nicely and the eggs were poached beautifully with soft runny yolk. Overall, nothing Super extraordinary bout the dishes (just your usual brunch), but it was a simple comforting meal.
Lisa Goldsmith
Delicious brekky (sweet pot feta and basil hash with spinach and egg) and gorgeous coffee. Worth the short wait (on a Sunday morning) with delightful staff and atmosphere :)
Celia
I came here with a group of friends. The Galleon gives off a retro American feel. It's nice to see all the customers looking comfortable having small chats with the waitresses. I had the french toast and it was definitely worth its price of $13.5. The sweet ricotta cheese that I used as a spread on the french toast made me think ordering this dish was the right choice. It was filling and it tasted pretty much like a french toast would and I have no complaints.
Jessica Kim Hintz
Hands down. Best cafe in St Kilda. Consistently amazing. Good price. Amazing food. The banana loaf with vanilla ricotta is by far the best I have ever had!!! 👍👍 Completely faultless!
Greg
Galleon is a cute place with its retro furniture tables and chairs. It has an old American diner feel to it and that's fun. The food was pretty good. The poached eggs were spot on, the portion size was reasonable and the spinach, avocado and salmon were all fine. There had been strong reviews on the sweet potato hash brown and one of us ordered this as their meal. It's different but it does not set the taste buds alight. Frankly, we found it ordinary. The cafe lattes were good and I would certainly recommend getting a take away latte or cappuccino from Galleon. However, the short macchiato is a stiffer test as the steamed milk hides a lot of sins. The macchiato was not great with a sour after taste. Galleon does not assign waiters to tables so service is haphazard. We ordered a cafe latte that never arrived with no waiter coming by our table so we could follow-up. Galleon was great at correcting this when we eventually went up to the register to follow-up. They gave us the latte for free. But it should not come to that. I think Galleon may be a victim of its own success. All the staff are pleasant enough, but there is a missing "connection" with diners. I would not drive to dine at Galleon and I will look elsewhere when I next brunch in St Kilda. Significantly better than Galleon are Las Chicas in Balaclava and Top Paddock and Pillar of Salt in Richmond.
Zac Blum
Food was excellent as always, service was extremely poor and took 40 minutes to get our food. It's a shame because the quality of their food and drink is great!

Amazing every time ////This is a Stkilda icon
The simple things are done well I have been here quite a few times I have had amazing ok
And average but over all the foods is pretty yummy simple fare. At a nice price staff are pretty good aswell
Coffee is great the vibe is awsome
This place gets very busy indeed so go early
All in all solid !!!
All these little instagram focussed new joints
Should take note of what is done well at this place. Outstanding every time fucken awsome waiters so nice even wen busy really good best cafe in the area by a country mile don't waste your money at other places in Stkilda area
Cafe Tourist
Yeahhhhh
Love the atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent food, but coffee was not as consistent but still very good.
I loved it and my friend loved it.

A short wait during the weekend brunch rush. Food came relatively quickly. Saw big bowls of fries getting delivered to tables and just had to have one!

Hot and crispy with was it aioli or mayo?

Loved that the chai came in a pot and you can customize the amount of honey you like in it.

Service was friendly.
Missy Mahony
Had brunch here today, nice cafe but food was disappointing. I had the french toast with bacon. The toast was awful, it looked and tasted deep fried. It was very fatty and chewy. It was even difficult to cut with the knife. The bacon was over cooked. There was practically no maple syrup on the dish. My friend could not finish the pork sandwich. The bread was not great and there was too much mayo. Coffee was ok. Won't be rushing back!
Phil
The breakfast is very delicious
The 'bubble and squeak' is very unique and tasty.
Pancakes were prepared to almost perfection.
A good place for have breakfast in my opinion.
Ally
The food was pretty good. The interior was cute with retro decorations and colours. I ordered the Moroccan ham hock which tasted pretty good. My friend had the banana and pistachio pancakes which tasted amazing and the mocha milkshake was a nice addition to the meal.
Live_in_melbourne
We had French toast and bloody Mary. It's a very cozy cafe with good vibe. Enjoyed sitting here with sunshine on a nice sunny day. Would definitely go back when around.
April_eats
Great cafe! Not an eye catcher but the queues that I regularly noticed outside made me interested. Have been here on a number of occasions and have loved all the breakfast and lunch dishes I have had! I try to bring friends here when I can because I feel not many people know about it it might get overlooked with all the other big names in St Kilda
Tash Van Leeuwen
My food was really good. I was almost going to give this place a perfect review but one girl working there today talked to her customers with an attitude and her long nails were a definite health risk. Not the cleanest place. The service I got was great, seeing others be treated as though they were a burden wasn't very nice. Despite this, thank you for a great feed👌

I had heard little about The Galleon before dining, but every time I had been past there it was always full, which is always a good sign. We wandered up here on a Sunday, and quickly ordered a coffee which was delicious - smooth and creamy. For brekky I had the smoked salmon bagel which was very tasty. Accompanying it was a hashbrown, which was unbelievably delightful. Full of sweet potato and so crispy. The only thing going against the bagel was the fact that any bite caused the filling to leave its home. Nothing against the chef, just always frustrating with avocado. A very pleasurable experience. The only downfall was when we were leaving our table, it felt like the waiter jumped on us. I was literally putting my jacket on and he had already cleared the table and waved people over. Give us 30 seconds and I'll be on my way.
Valitri
Great food, good coffee, excellent vibe. The Galleon has so much character and half the joy of coming here is the people watching. A very welcoming neighbourhood cafe.
Claire Loves Food
Fantastic service and great coffee!! Definitely my favourite cafe in St Kilda. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious. 5 out of 5 every time!!
Daniele
Very disappointed by this place. Veggie burger not really good, forgot one of our 4 orders.... One of our friend didn t it!!!! But thanks for give us in compensation all our drinks! Despite that, we will not go back again
Sarah Holloway
Absolutely love this place and all its grungy charm. The mismatched patchy furniture, scuffed decor, community noticeboard on one wall and rotating art gallery on another sound like a disastrous combination among the crazily picky South side brunch-goers of Melbourne, but somehow the place is always absolutely packed. The menu is very extensive with options of all sizes, flavours and dietary requirements. Consistently delicious, quick and filling, the food keeps me coming back at least once a week! It's a rare place that doesn't cave to Melbourne's standard Instagram-friendly recipe and still draws a huge crowd - I can't say the food is particularly pretty but it's a great example of where the food itself is so good that everything else doesn't really matter. The service can be a little abrupt sometimes, and isn't particularly warm or overly friendly but is always quick and accurate and the staff do recognise a familiar face. Will keep coming back over and over!
Bla Bla
Food was delicious and I highly recommend food. As far as the atmosphere goes, they are going for the hipster look but they took it too far and the place seems too dirty and dusty and could do with a good clean.
Alex Bogart-King
Absolutely top notch breakfast place that rivals the best in Melbourne. Leave the fancy toffs at the door, this place is for people who just want genuine food.
Jane Hearn
We were driving to Phillip Island from St Kilda and we found this humble cafe. I had scrambled egg on toast w bacon and avocado and hash sweet potato. Toast was amazing w a slab of butter on it. I also ordered a latte. Latte was good, not burnt. Would come back!
Asomek
The atmosphere may be lovely here, but the food & coffee was average. My long black was burnt and bitter, and the scrambled tofu was bland and soggy. They do however make a fantastic bloody mary.
Jen Dorjee
This was the first cafe I went to in Melbourne in the late 1980s. Since then its served me many delicious meals and coffee. So glad it has changed little. Its the one cafe I still cross town for.
Clare S
Unpretentious local cafe. Great menu variety - especially for veggie/vegan options. The scrambled tofu is delicious! Can get very busy so get there early :)
Edward Schweitzer
The Gal is a St Kilda institution. You will probably wait for a table on the weekend and the coffee is just ok by todays standards but the atmosphere is A+ unpretentious friendly happening and the food is always delicious, sizable and well priced.
Samson Abraha
Best breakfast/brunch place in St.Kilda. I go there at least twice a week especially on weekends. Friendly staff, love the food, meatballs and truffle eggs are my fav.
Just Ate
Awesome cafe. Hidden away from the hustle of the rest of St Kilda. Extremely helpful and happy staff. Coffee was a 7 out of 10. Had the haloumi salad with chicken. Was great. Dressing was just right and plenty of it. Quite busy but deservedly so.
Facebook User
NO ETPOS RECIEPT. Galleon cafe refused to give me an eftpos receipt saying that the machine doesn't print customer receipts. Pretty sure that's not legal.
Kelsey Gamble
The wait was about half an hour, and the place was insanely packed. The staff were super friendly and at the first sign of my baby getting fussy brought over a toy for him to play with. I had the Drunken Sailor breakfast (they're right when they say it's a big meal, make sure you're hungry beforehand!) and the mushrooms were definitely the highlight. My partner had the Galleon burger which was deceptively big as well. Little strange that it didn't come with chips. The coffee was nothing to write home about but their juice is fresh squeezed which I'm always a big fan of.
SB91
Had brekky at Galleon a couple weeks ago and enjoyed the coffee and meal. Had an issue where our meals took longer than 45 minutes to arrive which was very frustrating at the time as we were starving! We were given the meals free of charge for the delay and we couldn't be happier with the customer service. Thankfully the meals were delicious. Will definitely be returning!
Ryan Murphy
Really great food right in the heart of St Kilda, I had the eggs Benedict which came on a bagel and I got meatballs and halloumi as sides, was amazing. Staff were really friendly and the place had a unique vibe, I would definitely go back
I. D.
Lovely café! It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon, but they had one table left for us. When a table outside came free after about 15 minutes we moved to sit in the sun. Had a latte, which was fairly good. We also ordered a mixed juice which came in a big glass and was delicious! We shared the veggie burger, it was very nice, but we were happy we shared, both because of the size, but also because I think it wouldn't be as delicious if you'd had to eat the whole thing! Great vibe :)
Cat
One of my favourite spots in St Kilda for breakfast /lunch. Highly recommend the pancakes, the sandwiches, and the Super Sailor. Service is not the friendliest but the tasty food and cheap prices keep me coming back for more.
Neil MacKinnon
Fantastic atmosphere and great food, service is very good too. You should try the sweet potato hash browns! Well worth a visit! Seatin is comfortable whilst communal, and the service is very attentive.
Rob Sherr
Had breakfast at was once a favourite establishment but now a very ordinary cafe. The food was sub standard with poor presentation and a manger who didn't want to hear the truth about the quality. I am happy to say Melbourne is spoilt with much better places to frequent- I would not go back to Galleon in a hurry.
J.pelich
One of the best around... Great food and delicious coffee, staff are very friendly (even if they do tend to forget 1 in every 3 coffee orders placed). The quality of the meals well and truly makes up for the absence of desired/requested caffeine.
The sweet potato hash and the Banana Pancakes are particularly stand outs, oh and they make a mean Bloody Mary :)
If you're visiting St Kilda, you should not leave without visiting the Galleon.
Sam Flipo
My favourite Brunch location! Consistently good coffee, super friendly staff, retro fit out, perfectly matched fresh food & extremely affordable.
Josh Martin
Great vege burger!. So great, just had to let you know :)

My first impressions of Melbourne were cold and very rainy. The weather surprised me as, being from the UK, I thought Melbourne was always warm and sunny. I have since spoken to some Australian friends who said that you really can get four seasons in one day in Melbourne! Anyway, we stayed at a nearby hotel in St Kilda for a business trip and fancied somewhere different to the hotel for breakfast. So we popped into the Galleon Café at 7.15 in the morning and it was the perfect place for a couple of people who were still a little bleary eyed and just waking up.

The St Kilda Galleon Cafe – where I probably had the most disappointing experience food-wise since moving to Melbourne. I’m a St Kilda local. There is some fantastic food to be had in this suburb, but I’m sorry to say there is a lot that is pretty indifferent. Partly because, I suspect, St Kilda is something of a tourist trap – with a few notable exceptions, cafes and restaurants don’t have to make such an effort. There is a captive audience of backpackers with credit cards to cater to. They don’t think much of the food? Who cares? Building a clientele and a reputation is less important when you have a steady stream of here today, gone tomorrow customers. So, to get away from the dull, overpriced franchise attempts on Acland Street, I was looking forward to trying the Galleon – described as a local legend establishment, generally packed to the grungy rafters and frequently sporting a queue out the door. Maybe I was unlucky, but from my one experience of the place, I just don’t understa
Confessions Of A Little Piggy
The bread was moist, dense and naturally sweet - which paired well with a schmear of light vanilla bean ricotta. Galleon Burger with Fried Egg I seem to be craving burgers a lot these days, and I thought this one would satisfy my hankering. But, as the burger was placed in front of me, my heart sank. The patty was much too small for the bun - hidden among a jungle of trimmings, it looked as if though it was wearing a ridiculously oversized turkish bun as a hat. It was however, done with a nice crust of char and worked well with the crispy strip of bacon. But, despite what so

Continually drawing a diverse and eclectic range of people, Galleon continues to it’s winning formula a pleasing everyone (well, almost everyone, some people are unpleasable – fact). Galleon opens it’s blinds to the public seven days a week from 7am to 5pm. Don’t be surprised if you spot a celeb or two, maybe even a footy player chomming down some grub at this St Kilda institution. To close my spiel on a powerful note - Galleon is St Kilda. St Kilda is Galleon.
Allie Baba
I went for the sweet potato, basil and feta hash, served with wilted spinach, one poached egg and tomato and chilli chutney.
Eggswithsides
In a city where new cafes pop up seemingly overnight, it is comforting to know that stalwarts of the breakfast scene like St Kilda's Galleon aren't going anywhere. For over twenty years, the Galleon has been dishing up the most delicious breakfasts south of the river and whilst its clientele may have gone from hippy to hipster, its popularity has never waned. These days the menu tempts with a diverse range of options sure to thrill vegetarians and carnivores alike. Sweet potato hash browns topped with spinach and chutney, scrambled tofu with enoki mushrooms, or brekky bagels are just some of the perennial favourites. Rice pudding and french toast are amongst the many offerings for those with a sweeter tooth. Strong coffees and more-than-generous portions make the Gall' the destination of choice for that home cooked fry-up you're craving but could never make this well yourself. With its ramshackle decor and energetic vibe, the Galleon is the ultimate haunt for slipping into a booth (if

For starters, we had some ice coffee, ice chocolate and mocha to begin. Eggs Benedict with Smoked Leg Ham with one egg $11; side of sweet potato hash, $3.50 The smoked leg ham paired with the house made hollandaise , topped with a perfectly poached egg… yum! Also couldn't resist ordering the hideous sweet potato hash . But like they say, do not judge a book by its cover, because it was trul

I liked Galleon, with it’s quirky finishings and easy going atmosphere, though I was a little unimpressed with how long we had to wait for the food. That said, it was reasonably priced and well executed. Worth a visit if you’re a local.

Eat And Be Merry Crew
What I liked as much as anything about Galleon is that it feels so unpretentious. Some cafés seem to shout 'Look at me, look at me, I'm so casually hip' but Galleon felt like the real thing. Early morning patrons included families with kids, local hipsters and blow-ins like me. The breakfast menu, with a couple of exceptions, tends towards the comforting rather than the adventurous and the music was more Andrews Sisters than Scissor Sisters. Despite being busy it feels like a place to hang out, put the feet up and read the paper more than somewhere to be seen ... and the advertisements for local events help with this idea. From the outside Galleon never looks quite right to me though. You know that it's a café with its small but brightly coloured roadside tables but it always looks at first glance that it should be a furniture store or large laundry. I do however like the inside a lot, with its bare floors, booths along one wall and mismatched tables and chairs. It's brightly coloure

Galleon dishes out an insanely tasty house baked banana bread.

Good place for breakfast. The Galleon is just off the main streets of St Kilda. It's a quirky nice little place with no bling to it. service is always good and the meals are also good. Coffee is very good. recommend it. It has a more Fitzroy/ Collingwood feel to it.

A family on Holidays..... We are a family of four and were fortunate enough to be staying right opposite this gem of a place for a week. Every morning we would send our 14 year old to get our coffees and he would come back coffees in tow and with a big smile and report back with the same line, "I like that hipster place".... A couple of times were able to eat breakfast as well. The staff, food and coffee are all 10/10. In fact when we are fortunate to return to Melbourne again we are heading straight there for breakfast. Yum.

Have been going there for about 20 years.. First took my kids there when they were very little, they are now in their 20's, and we're still going, because it's AWESOME!!!! Food, coffee and staff are brilliant, and that's been the case for as long as I can remember. Big winner.

I would call... A time travel in history... Looks like my great grandmothers kitchen ! And not in a good way ! Urban spoon you don't always talk the truth !!!! Better luck next time !!!! The furniture looks disgusting and rusted. The restaurant looks so dirty. I assume the cafeteria in prison looks like this !!! Never again! Couldn't wait to leave this place!!!

Dear Charlotte Harris. Your grandmother told me to go outside, search the street and gutter where she had parked her car, find her dirty sock, pick it up out of the gutter, wring out the water with my clean hands I serve you food and coffee with and take it inside the food establishment and wait for her arrival. My co workers and I thought it was a prank it was such a hilarious request. I took time out to leave the cafe, walk out into the rain and confirmed i could see it, whilst I was serving 17 tables. If this dirty sock was so sentimental and important to your entire family why didn't you offer to come and search the street yourself for Nanna? I didn't know my waitressing duties included laundry street sweeper aswell as food handling, and I've been in hospitality for 18yrs, thanks for enlightening me. My life was incomplete till now.

Galleon is one of my very favourite cafés to visit. The best coffee in town, and a fantastic service that balances warmth and efficiency.
The only complaint is that they don't charge me for coffee!!!!... Not fair cheeky girls! Love this institution
