Had 4 different waitresses while we were there and the first waitress who showed us to our table in the ‘mezzanine’ area was not very helpful or attentive. The other waitresses were nice and food was fantastic. We loved the secluded dining area (mainly due to Covid). The spicy sauce for the edamame was amazing!
Now they are offering the lunch set for $19.50 (rice, salad, miso and options: beef angus, fried veg, tori kara, fried fish in yuzu sauce)..
If thats not enough, the bento set is still in the menu ( you can have 3 options instead of 1 on the lunch set)..

Excellent service. Plenty of staff on a busy Saturday night. Lovely welcome and no wait to be seated. Constant service which often can be missing in a busy restaurant.
Chose the Yuzu Lime & Bitters to drink (non alcoholic) for my drinkies. Then shared prawn tempura, tuna tataki, green veggies and tori teriyaki don. All fantastic, well cooked, tasty and delicious food. Dessert was the chocolate harumaki (choc spring rolls).
Only criticism is the noise factor but with a large restaurant on a Saturday night it’s not surprising.
Very good value as it’s cost $125 a couple including 2 alcoholic drinks (pink gin daiquiri x 2).

I was highly impressed by this restaurant’s modern take on traditional Japanese favourites. Some of the gems they had to offer included chicken yakitori skewers, a light Asian coleslaw, dragon maki rolls and a fresh platter of sashimi. However, the standout dish for me was the braised wagyu neck that left me licking the plate and begging for more. Unfortunately, as tables began to fill up, the room’s pleasant buzz soon grew to a noisy racket. Menu items were also quite small considering the stiff prices, but were still worth it. Ichi Ni Izakaya was overall a fantastic find with many tasty dishes to offer.
Been here twice! Once as a group of 12 and another ordering the banquet as a group of 10. Loved it both times - the Chicken Karaage is a standout, and the sushi/sashimi platter is pricey but worth it. Service is great but the food takes a while to come out (slow). Atmosphere is very lively, modern-Japanese with dark lighting.
The food here is amazing. Lovely place. In love with the yakitori these guys serve. Will be back :)
Amazing food and atmosphere. Cocktails are an absolute treat! Much prefer the St Kilda location to the Fitzroy as I’ve found the service to be better and portion sizes bigger. Ichi Ni rolls are my go to dish!
Great place, really cool atmosphere. Food was delicious but bloody pricey. Highly recommend the deep fried chicken, Dragon rolls, beef curry, and holy moly the Green Tea soufflé. Wow. Did not expect it to be so good.
Good selection of wines as well.

Went to this place like 9 years ago and it’s still pretty freakin awesome. Got there $20 lunch special with fried chicken, a dragon roll and a rainbow roll, some nigori sake, a pot of green tea and some edamame went down a treat. Reasonably priced as well. Definitely a cool spot. Gotta come back and have a few more of the other rolls.
Wonderful place to be when you are at St Kilda and dedicated for a Japanese meal. The store is in a great location, and survived for pretty long time, I I went there to have a rest song with some lunch. The sushis are not the best you can get in Melbourne, but they are good enough to satisfy your taste buds. Lunch sets are looking great, with side dishes to enjoy your main, in my case was the half cooked beef steak. The steak is generally standard, nothing really special, yet the side dishes are great to have when you bite on the meat. Overall, it’s not really the best restaurant you can find in St Kilda, however still a good place to sit down and have some snacks.

I must say, my last visit here was the most disappointing. Your restaurant is only as strong as your weakest link, and there was a few weak links that night.
The food is always good. It's always fresh, and tasty and beautifully presented. In this regard, they didn't let us down. But the service was so incredibly bad. They clearly forgot someone's entree, and instead of just owning it and admitting it, there was every excuse under the sun and most didn't even seem plausible and varied from wait staff to wait staff. I'd rather just know for sure that something has been forgotten, so we have a realistic expectation of when to expect it. I just don't think they either cope when very busy, or their staff just need more training.
Other than the bad service, I have to compliment them again on the food. Every dish was delicious and looked good too. My favourite was the Tuna Tataki (picture attached). Really, really good.
Pricing is a teeny bit high, but I guess average considering Japanese food is a bit pricier than other cuisines. Parking isn't always great, so I like coming to the earlier seating so there's a better chance for a parking space. The decor is good, but the chairs a bit uncomfortable and heavy to move when adjusting yourself at the table. But overall, I think if the food at a restaurant is good enough, it sometimes outweighs some of the negatives.
For many years this is my go to Japanese restaurant, even to this day, there may be so many options out there, but I know I will get consistent quality Japanese dishes here and leave with a happy tummy.
Went here last night after having drinks nearby. Service was quick which was great because we were hungry! To begin we had edamame with sea salt (can never go wrong) followed by the ichi ni roll (lobster inside out roll with seared salmon on the top) which was lovely and fresh. For main we shared the tofu teriyaki don which had a lovely sauce and accompanying pickles. Look forward to returning and trying more items on the menu!

店面装修得是日系+modern风。我们两个人点了5个菜。猪肉的年糕好好吃，我本来就是喜欢年糕的，外面裹着猪肉沫，太满足了。寿司点的ichi ni roll，外面是robster，可是是生的。teriyaki chicken rice味道不用说啦，酱的味道很浓。黑色皮的饺子也是好好吃，竟然爱上了。最后是炸藕片，蘸着酱，好棒。

Amazing staff amazing food even the cocktails were amazing ! Best sushi and sashimi i have ever had really puts a new prospective on sushi when you think of chain stores like sushi sushi, Ichi ni have more then out done them selves . Can be a real hotspot in the summer as it is next to the beach and has a great sunset ocean view !
We had a perfect evening at Ichi Ni. Firstly, the service was spot on, friendly and efficient. The food was exquisite. We enjoyed every dish. Loved the tempura selection: Eggplant, sweet potato and whiting, perfect, tempura was so delicate! The vegetable gyoza was delicious as was the chicken teriyaki. Deserts were also nice, light but delicious. Very fairly priced given the quality of food, great service and top location. Highly recommended. Will be back.

I have eaten here four times and each time it has been amazing. Staff are just fabulous. Friendly and professional and nothing is too much trouble. The menu is a delight. If it’s your first I’d suggest sampling lots of different things but definitely include the cashew nuts and Renton chips they are awesome. So many other options and have not had anything that wasn’t great. I’m not usually a dessert person but you have to try any of the desserts- absolute masterpieces. My favourite was the Okinawa Brown Sugar Cheesecake. I have had it three times and each time I died and went to heaven. My favourite place in Melbourne.
Ichi Ni has boasts an authentic Japanese vibe with am elegantly orchestrated Western twist. The inside was unexpectedly traditional in comparison to its exterior. We were seated in the upper level that overlooked the rest of the restaurant; while we were able to take in the atmosphere better, our candlelit table was no match for the lower level lantern-lit tables.
Onto the food! We had the classic edamame and lotus root chips for starters. Mains included soft shell crab, pork belly, field mushrooms and a sashimi platter (which was soooo fresh!). My favourites were the sushi rolls; I highly recommend the dragon roll and the Ichi Ni roll. The field mushrooms were probably my least favourite dish because the corn salsa topping made it overly sweet. We also ordered 5 different cocktails, all of which were delicious.
In summary, delicious Japanese food if you’re willing to splurge a little!
We ordered in, food arrived in a timely manner. We ordered a selection of maki rolls which were all outstanding. Definitely on the pricier side but worth a try if you haven't already.

This place always impresses. It’s one of my favourite places to dine. The food is consistently outstanding. I have food allergies and they are very accomodation.

I have heard good things about this place for a while and was looking forward to trying it out.
Situated in an awesome spot, the venue is very cool and feels spacious yet busy.
They recommended we go for the tapas options and so we did. The flame grilled scallops and deep fried tiger prawns were absolutely delicious - full of flavour and a stand out for me.
We complimented this with some sweet potato tempura, vegetable gyozas and the dragon roll which was all very enjoyable.
The waitress was very enthusiastic and helpful which made the meal more enjoyable.
Another great Japanese option in Melbourne.
Having been to the South Yarra version and enjoying a large dinner (including a wine) for under $50, I recommended this for a work Christmas party. Venue was great for the summers day we were lucky enough to have so it all started well. Then we commenced the set menu. Don't get me wrong, the food was all very nice, the raw fish very fresh and the assortment was varied enough to cater to pretty much everyones own personal likes. However, at $60 per head (ex alcohol) it was expensive and I feel the value would be better if you ordered whatever dishes you fancied from the menu. I think there was a collective confusion when they served dessert as we were all expecting a lot more food: 1 teriyaki chicken stick, 2 mouth fuls of sushi, 3 gyozas, a slither of steak , some edamame, taro chips and a few other small items it was no where near enough in terms of value and quantify. All in all - go, just don't pay for a ski lesson

I love how there’s so many ‘ichi ni’ branches. They have amazing sushi! I ordered the rainbow rolls and they were so goood! I love a good sushi roll with a good sauce. The salmon was seared beautiful. I could eat 10 more! Also, the location is to die for, right in front of the beach!

Mustard battered rawns were spicy and tasty. Eggplant tempura was as good as it always is and then scallops with miso cheese which were a standout. A large sashimi platter where seared salmon and kingfish were particularly good. Sorba doughnuts to finish off. All set for the ride home!

However service was friendly and location is very difficult to beat.

I was torn between rating this restaurant a 3.5 or 4. The service was great although the food was a bit variable. I especially liked the lotus root chips, the gyozas, the eggplant with parmesan and the fried chicken. I didn't love the tofu balls and grilled eggplant which I found a bit bland. Nice ambience - good for a night out and a few drinks with friends.

What a great place to come. Across the road from the beach on a lovely day the service was only outdone by the amazing food. Not really the spot to bring a 3yo but they accommodated us wonderfullly.
The seafood was incredible. Fresh and full of colour and the Goyza was superb.

Had a cousins farewell _ slash birthday dinner at Ichi Ni on a beautiful balmy Wednesday evening. Arriving a little earlier than everyone else I got a chance to soak up some of the setting sun and enjoy a view of the Bay. Being from the landlocked North, for a moment I felt like I was on holiday somewhere on the Mediterranean. A group of 18 we had the banquet, which made a lot sense given the size of our party. From start to finish the food and service was fantastic. A great selection of dishes , with standouts like the freshness of the sashimi plate and the succulent braised pork belly, slow cooked in miso and honey. With summer coming up I may just have to join the throngs of Northern tourists to the Bayside for hopefully another standout dining experience at Ichi Ni .
Easy to book for a large group of people, no deposit needed. Very attentive service. Extensive menu and range of seafood and meat and veggie. Great menu for sharing. The Ebi Mayo (prawns in mayo and wasabi) were unreal, absolute highlight! , inside the prawn was hot and juicy, coated by a crispy and crunchy batter then smothered with a mayo and wasabi sauce! Will be back just for these! Other highlights, the Tori Kara (fried chicken) it was gluten free and so tasty. Really good how many gluten free options there were, we had a group with a range of food requirements and everyone was able to find something! Great setting too, views out over St Kilda beach as the sun was setting! Beautiful!
The food is always good at Ichi Ni, absolutely love their rolls and tempura. What better way to have some fresh sashimi and sake than on their sunny deck in Summer! Love it!
Love the ichi ni restaurants! The staff offer amazing service, and the food comes so quickly. Is hard to follow the act of its sister restaurant in Fitzroy but definitely competed, the edemayo prawns!!!! And the spicy edamame two highlights!
Not to mention the fairy floss cocktail, which can have the ability to be too sweet but was just perfect!!!

The Lunch bento box is really nice and good value for the quality. Decor and location is also great, views of the bay from inside or outside. Looking forward to my next visit.
Really enjoyed the food on offer at Ichi Ni. The standout were the crumbed prawns with wasabi mayonnaise. The only let down is that the dishes are on the pricy side..however I have seen worse value for money at far less impressive Japanese restaurants. The 3.5 stars are awarded for their quality dishes and great service.
I love sushi. Love it! I didn't get the buzz about this place, to be honest. Average food, the view was beautiful. Would be great there on a summer afternoon!

A place you go for a special occasion. The quality of food is outstanding. The place is buzzing on the weekends which means you have to book in advance. Quite pricey, which is why it isn't a venue that we visit more frequently.
Great location, great atmosphere, great food, good place to go with a large group to share food. The renkon chips (lotus root chips) are a great way to start the meal. The yakitori are very tasty. The quinoa salad was a surprise, tasty and healthy. The field mushroom robatayaki came with a very tasty mustard gel. I also like their home made tartare sauce for the tempura prawns. We tried the two japanese citrus sorbet for dessert. The Ponkan was a sweeter orange sorbet and the Buntan was a slightly bitter one. Great way to end the meal.
Great selection of vegan options to choose from, we basically ordered one of everything and were really impressed with the flavours and textures. Staff can be hit and miss depending on who you get. Lovely warm sake selection, and the views from the terrace tables at sunset are spectacular.
Had a good date night here one summer night - good food and service. The variety of dishes and sushi we had was good but I have had better elsewhere. It's a good spot if you're in the neighbourhood and hankering for some sushi. I liked sitting outside as it was breezy and the location looks over the pier nicely. That being said the sun was blinding me! I had to resort to sitting on the edge of the plants and not the seat because we couldn't move (tables all full).
Loved this place since it first opened! Great vibe and atmosphere, excellent food although it's a bit on the pricey side. Perfect to take your date or significant other. Coming back soon for sure

Best pork belly bao ever! Must try dishes are the Wagyu Rib, Pork Bao, Lamb saykio yaki, Ichi ni nana Roll and the Volcano Roll. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Best to make a reservation on a Friday and Saturday!
I love how the place makes you feel secluded but also offers a great view. The staff are friendly and quick. I'll admit it's a bit pricey but when you get to taste the food you'd find it's worth it. We had the Wagyu Gyoza (juicy!), Dragon Roll, Agedashi Tofu and Green Tea Fondant (my favourite!!). I'm definitely coming back here.

Visited a couple times, once on my birthday which is in summer. The outside area is perfect for a summers night! The dumplings are my favourite and great selection of red wine and Japanese beers

Cocktails price is a little big high. So I didn't order the drink. The food is good. But crab salad is not really good. Taste normal.

I quite like the food here, it's not traditional Japanese but I think that generally they put a pretty good twist on it. It can be a bit pricey, but it is in a good spot and it's great to sit outside when the weather permits. Service is generally quite good and there's a pretty good atmosphere, even if you come in the middle of the week and it isn't too busy.
I do however, have two massive criticisms of this place.
I HATE disposable chopsticks, providing them in an actual restaurant to patrons that are eating in is the equivalent of providing a plastic knife to someone who has ordered a cut of Wagyu beef. Just, why?!
Also the heavy clunky stools on some of the outside tables, not only provide zero back support but are also the incorrect height for the table, essentially making the table too low. It makes it really difficult to eat, especially if you're not particularly skilled with the disposable chopsticks. So annoying.
Would recommend as long as you pick a table with seats and don't mind disposable chopsticks.

We had the dragon roll, ichi ni roll, pan fried dumplings, and a couple of tapas dishes. All were outstanding, but the dragon roll was the winner for me.
Just had a group of 8 there for dinner and we were all well pleased with the attentive service and food. A little query and very tasty. I'll be sure to come back

Stellar place. They have a couple of full meals but I think the concept is Japanese tapas with drinks. Very extensive drunks menu. Had the gyozas, rainbow roll and Ichi ni roll.
Was recommended by a friend a while ago , today we finally made it here.
First the food , they are so beautifully presented , they will look good in any picture even if taken by a bad photo grapher ! And the taste definitely match or overtake the look , every bite sparks a bit joy in me.
Loved their decor too , it's Japanese infused decoration , peaceful with wooden furniture and a touch of red accessories , beautiful !
The service wasn't behind any other restaurant, very attentive and pleasant .
I think we paid Around 70 dollars for two , for this price, this restaurant deserves 4,5 star.

Our favorite local Japanese - i'm guaranteed a happy ending if i book this one. It's a bit pricey but you have to make allowances for the location - at sunset it's stunning, made better if you get a seat outside on a warm day. The menu is extensive, which puts a question mark around freshness - regardless i can vouch for it's McDonalds like consistency and that's why we like it.

This is the second time I've eaten at the restaurant, the first time was one of the first dates with my boyfriend. We went back to recapture the moment and the food and service did not disappoint! The Japanese decor is wonderful and conveys an authentic atmosphere. The chefs are outstanding - the sushi chefs are located in the middle of the restaurant so that patrons can see what they are creating and understand the freshness of the food. The prawns and the gyoza dumplings were our stand out favourites. We even ordered the same two dishes twice. The service as always is attentive, punctual but not invasive.
Such a nice venue, has more character than most places! The food exceeded expectation and came out quickly, no loonnggg waits! Enjoyed it for a intimate dinner for two. Could do with a bit more variety in the menu, but all in all, left satisfied. We'll be back!
There are few restaurants I go to in Melbourne as frequently as I go to Ichi Ni on the St Kilda front, it’s my favourite place to enjoy a glass of wine, watch the sun set over the bay and enjoy some of Melbourne’s best Japanese. It’s mid afternoon and we wanted some wine and snacks. So a cold glass of Chardonnay and some pork gyoza are a perfect match. Nice little pot stickers, burnished on one side and full of fragrant pork with a little dipping sauce and a big smile!!
Good food and reasonable pricing. Dishes came quickly compared to some other Japanese places. Wasn't very impressed with the presentation of salmon carpaccio. Staffs are fairly attentive.
I went to the restaurant on Friday night and had a table upstair. The atmosphere was nice but a little too dark, couldn't clearly read the menu and observed our food.
We had the ebi mayo which is good, the soft shell crab maki and oyster were made okay but the wagyu steak was really delicious and also the deserts ( we had green tea ice cream and tiramisu).
The only forgettable thing was the waitress that served our table. She wasn't friendly and nice at all. Came to our table to explain the special dishes in a tiny voice and quickly left us, we really wanted to ask more but soon to give up. Our upstair session wasn't busy, she kept checking sth, didn't mind us for long. We had to wait until she came back to order more deserts.
The others were nice and helpful.
Anyway, it was worth a try!
Have been here before but never reviewed. Good place for Sunday drinks and to catch some sun on the balcony. The cocktail with fairy floss is delicious as was the sour worm but unfortunately my avocado maki was slightly under ripe and the soft shell crab roll had nothing interesting to it at all. I remember this place being delicious and full of flavour so hopefully next time it will be back up to scratch.

Vibrant and busy on a Thursday night we were lucky to get an unreserved table. We shared quite a few plates between 4 people, and we left having been well-fed. The staff brought the dishes in a sensible order giving you enough time to enjoy each course. It is on the pricey side, but definitely delicious. Kurtis at the front desk welcomed us with a warm greeting and waiting staff were super friendly and helpful. We had a pleasant evening; although the place was buzzing, we did not have to shout to hear each other. I'd recommend this venue to anyone with a taste for good food in a cozy atmosphere.

Service was very attentive and prompt throughout a busy Saturday night. Generally good quality of food and presentation, pretty standard stuff for an izakaya. Prices mostly reasonable.

After 13 years in St Kilda we FINALLY made it to IchiNi! OMG I wish we'd been going sooner! Great cocktails, friendly service, food was amazing! We had the set menu which is basically Japanese 'fusion', ideal for the unadventurous Western pallet, but also delicious. It was belting with rain but very dry under the awning on the terrace. We'll be back again soon.
It's a busy restaurant for a weekday dinner, bit pricey but worth it for special occasions. Friendly staff , food was excellent. Small quantities though so think as experience:-)
So in love with this restaurant, I believe it has been around forever but it was a first for me and we had Christmas lunch here. Can not fault the food, everything was absolutely delicious.
The kitchen is open and central to the restaurant which adds a great atmosphere. Decor on point even in the loo.
Service could have been slowed down but I guess maximising Christmas turnover was the motive.
