Review Pink Flake - St Kilda

Janina Nowak
Good to see they have re-opened! Today, I had grilled barramundi and two potato cakes. Delicious. I'm a fan of potato cakes and rarely experience them as good as these--nice thick slice of potato with a thin batter. Already seasoned. The barramundi fillet was a generous serving and fell apart easily to get onto the fork. They've decided to do away with proper crockery and cutlery for dine-in, in favour of wooden cutlery, and served in a recyclable container that would also be used for takeaway orders. It saves on washing up! They also have a daily $10 Special meal deal that includes fish, chips, and salad. Good value. The footpath dining area caters to wheelchair users, rather than inside the shop.

Fish and Chips are always a hit and miss but boy we weren’t let down by these guys! Can I say my fish ( Blue Grenadier) was flaky and just flavoursome. The Calamari were fresh and cooked to perfection. My wife and got the Pack for 2 very generous and the Asian salad had a nice kick to it. Check these guys out when ur in St Kilda.

The grilled whitening and calamari was cooked perfectly with herbs and spices, it was delicious! Chips are nice and crunchy too. Highly recommended!

Quintessential Fish N Chip shop, at attractive prices, close to the beach. The batter is light and crispy. The fish, Flake and NZ Dory, are both very fresh. The chips, golden, crunchy and creamy. And the salad, often an afterthought at other places, is fresh, crunchy and thoughtful. I really enjoyed having pickled ginger on my garden salad! A wedge of lemon and dressing are included in the pocket friendly price. Service is friendly and quick.

They cook bassa (cat fish) when you order flake. I even asked to see it before it was cooked because they did it last time too. They showed me a tub full of thin cat fish fillets and no flake. The staff are obviously told to just say it’s flake, but it was like showing chicken and saying it’s beef. Been going here for years and it was really good, now they’re just cutting costs and lying to their customers.

I love lunch special $10 fish & chip included salad. So good

By far the best fish and chips and calamari and scallops and prawns we have ever tasted. Food so fresh. Staff was very nice as well. Worth the trip!
Philip Lim
No-nonsense fish and chips stall. Lunch deal at $10 was an absolute steal.
Rose Williams
The food was delicious and yummy. The fish had a great taste.

A real bad experience with this store. The staff was rude, not attentive, no presence of mind and no manners to talk. The food was not worth money. it would have been better to stay home and eat of fridge. There was a human nail inside my food which I brought to their mention but they totally ignored and then I realised it was nail of the man I saw in front staff who was bitting his nails when I entered. It was real disgusting and the hard part the owner also ignored. He didnot even take a chance to clear things up or change the food. He was so negligent and arrogant. This is how they treat customers. Disgusting. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Its wasting money and time.

NEVER EVER TRY PINK FLAKE FISH & CHIPS. DON'T DO THIS MISTAKE. Indian owners Hitesh and his staff is not capable enough to run his business. EVEN They don't know how to deal with guest. They don't know how to charge payments. Even the chef don't know the recipe of food. I don't think that any of the dishes made in the real-time...the temperature of the food was not good but I am sure they used microwave oven. The quality was just ok and the taste was very bad but nothing unusual, special or exciting. The quantity on each dish was unpleasantly moderate. <br/><br/>The service was absolutely disappointing from indian staff had extremely good mood…so good that they were dancing, they were yelling each other and they generally made fuss annoying us. In addition they could hardly notice us when we wanted something (water, the bill etc.).<br/><br/>We spend 105$ (a little more than 20e per person!) but the price is not comparable to the food and service - too much money. In conclusion the whole experience was not good, I would never go again to this place for any reason and I don't recommend this restaurant, not even to my worst enemy.<br/><br/>In a few words...you should better try McDonalds on the main road... That bad!!

I love the $10 lunch special with fish and chips. The serving is very good for the price.

We ordered takeaway while at Luna Park. It was ready in 10minutes & was absolutely delicious. Light, crisp batter & awesome chips. We ate everything & felt good afterwards - a sure sign of good fish & chips! 👌🏻

Came here after our 5k walk by the beach, and the lunch special was so worth it! 10 dollars for this massive portion! Tried my baby cousins calamari 10 dollar lunch special as well and it was excellent. The calamari was tender and chewy; flake was fresh too! We came on a sunny day as well so ambience was perfect

Recently came by to try the pink flake! We've ordered few of them as well as sweet potato fries. <br/>The fish was okay. Kind of flavorless and way too salty. Same for the fries, they were nice and crunchy but too salty as well.<br/>You get quite a generous size for a reasonable price but the quality isn't there. We were disappointed to be honest.

Okay, I’ve had many variations of fish and chips but Pink Flake is seriously top notch! We ordered the pack for 2, with flake - 1 battered and the other grilled. One word a-mazing!! Both pieces of fish were cooked perfectly and were extra thick and juicy, not your average dried thin piece of fish where you eat more batter than the actual fish. <br/><br/>The salt and pepper calamari was tender and flavourful too. The orders were served on two separate plates with a side of our chosen salad (Greek) and potato cake, with the calamari an chips in a separate bowl. <br/><br/>There was more than enough to go around as the meal was shared with our mini... I will be returning sooner rather than later!!

The best food and I will munch on it 24/7 and it is yummy to eat<br/>Everyone would like it and if you don’t there’s something wrong with you awsooooooooome

Refused to give tap water. Disappointed. Calamari was good though and food in general is okay. If only they allowed people to drink water :( .

Absolutely amazing service. The staff is very kind and catered very nicely to our minor alteration requests even on a busy evening service. Had their fish n chips combo, sweet potato chips and salad. Nice portions and worth the coin.<br/>
Good Food Good Mood
We popped into the The Pink Flake tonight on account of the balmy weather (and the fact my beautician was located nearby and we were in need of a quick dinner). We’ve been here before and quite frankly I’m surprised there isn’t more than one fish and chip joint being so close to the beach.<br/><br/>It’s serviceable f&c but nothing exciting. They offer combo packs with rice and salad or chips but the salad looked pretty lacklustre in the window so I opted to try a potato cake instead. I had the lemon pepper calamari which didn’t have any flavour at all and hadn’t been particularly well cleaned.<br/><br/>My husband got the grilled calamari and a barramundi. His grilled calamari was a yummier than mine and I will definitely remember that the next time he has a hankering for fish

Came here on a beautiful sunny day. We ordered the $10 lunch special (flake and blue grenadier with salad and chips). The batter was light and crunchy and both meals were super generous. For the price, location, and quality it’s probably been our best meal so far. Thanks for a good feed!

I LOVE pink flake, one of the best fish and chips ever!! We had the dory and the flake, one with Greek salad. The dory was so flurry and everything was perfect. The batter was crispy and golden. Portions were extremely generous, loads of fries and a ton of salad. I really hate when fish and chips places make you pay extra for one tiny portion of tartare sauce, but here, they let you chose whatever sauce you want without any extra charge. Also if you choose to dine in, each table has hot sauce and extra condiments.

It is the best calamari in St Kilda highly recommended I like the sweet potato chips and the fish are very fresh. The calamari are in a big Cut. Love to comes again someday 👍🏻

Great fish and chips takeaway shop in St Kilda. Friendly, efficient service and food was fresh, scrumptious and good value for money. Ordered the lunch special with grilled, herbed flake. Chips were thick and crunchy while the Greek Salad had a tasty dressing. Dined on an outdoor table and enjoyed the vibe of Acland Street. Would definitely come here again.

Not wheelchair accessible indoors. Seating out the front but you need someone who is able to go in and order. No accessible bathrooms.<br/><br/>Typical fish and chip shop really. We went in non peak times and had no issues.

Had the lunch pack special for $10. Good serving and fish and chips were hot and fresh. The salad included was also alright, but could be better.
Sakky Sak
Awesome fresh fish, dimmies & chips ! They also added an extra potato cake for us :) Will definitely come back to this place ! So tasty & convenient on Acland Street. 😁

Awesome food quality. Salad looks fresh and delicious. Been there for few times and loved the calamari one. Just a small walk from the beach.

Good value fish and chips! 12.95 for salad, fish, chips is great value, food was quick and the service from the blonde guy was great! Would come again :)

I really like the fish and chips from here. It's light, not too greasy and the chips are crispy and tasty. <br/><br/>However, the portion sizes vary dramatically every time we order from there. Last time we ordered two Flake packs and got huge pieces of Flake and a full tray of chips each. This time the Flake was much smaller and I only had about a handful of chips. Also we ordered a burger which came with mayo even though it didn't say mayo on the menu - this is one of my pet peeves! Totally puts me off using a place if I don't know what I'm getting.(we had food delivered so couldn't just complain and give it back which makes it even more annoying, especially as we asked for lots of other ingredients not to be put on the burger and would have asked for the mayo to be omitted had it been listed) <br/><br/>Overall, good food but need to sort out the inconsistencies. I will be trying out some of their competition before returning to Pink Flake.

Unfortunately felt very sick afterwards. Chips were over done. Calamari was underdone. The salad looked great in the window but the take away containers were old.

Had a hangover recovery meal delivered by foodora from here. (I know this brings an imagine of a fat bastard) It served its purpose, and to be honest for a lazy delivery meal on my part, was surprisingly good and freshly cooked. I think there's two things that really dropped the rating here. The first which I don't blame pink flake entirely for was the delivery guy forgetting the drink I ordered, yes I should of checked the bag, and he should as well, but I think the reputation of the venue is on show here and they definitely should of checked that everything was included. <br/>My biggest gripe though wasn't anything to do with the food or service, even missing the drink, it was wondering when some chips, a piece of fish, potato cake and dimmi entered the $30 price bracket! I mean seriously folks I'm no tight arse but $30 for take out fish and chips, shit that's rich. I know your prob thinking well you chose to pay that, and yes your right but at the time I was imagining drinks and enough chips to soak up the previous nights alcohol overload...to get the average "gourmet" box of food was a rip to say the least. <br/>Next time I won't be so lazy and will wonder down to the local where $30 of anything on the fish and chip menu is enough to clog up a family of 5's arteries for a week. <br/>Food good, price ridiculous.

New and improved! Great food, great place. Everything looks well-maintained and clean, quick service. Staff was excellent and will recommend all.

Had a lovely lunch with friends here. Fish was fresh and filling. We were even given one extra piece of fried fish free of charge from the friendly staff. Pictured is the grilled flake with salad. Prices are very reasonable.

Stopped off for an el quicko dinner before work- ordered grilled salmon and salad, medium rare. Order came promptly but very small... I thought- really?? $12.95 is reasonably priced but lordy I hope I don't require a second dinner later... Salmon was delicious, seasoned with herbs and lemon, a little over cooked (as it was such a small slice, that wasn't difficult) but it all tasted delicious and the Greek salad was your basic kalamata olive supermarket style, but pleasant enough. <br/><br/>A few ticks for a quiky dinner but the serving size borders on miserly / weight watchers..

Can't beat the $10 lunch special. You get fish or calamari with chips AND salad. Reminds me of Hooked a bit but a lot cheaper. My fave is the calamari. So crunchy and not oily at all.
Peter Larter
Fantastic fish and chippery, prob my fav in Vic. Best chips. Nice salads. Great value meal deals. Fresh. Good service. The calamari is a standout and also the barramundi is good.

Fantastic food, we had the $10 special, the young man who served us was very friendly and brought us lots of different sauces, service was fantastic. Great place, will return.
Christina Lukies
Had a piece of grilled flake and enjoyed it very much. I also ordered 2 potato cakes and got given an extra one for free! They were all light, crunchy and delish! One of the best batters I've ever had. Free lemon too. :)

New and improved! Great food, great place. Everything looks well-maintained and clean, quick service. Friendly staff who certainly know what they're doing. The new people running this place are gonna give it a bright future. Definitely my go-to fish and chips place in St Kilda beach.

Always have been my go to fish&chips place every time I visit St. Kilda beach. The $10 lunch pack special is so student friendly and it tastes amazing.

Great food and wonderful service. We have been looking for a good seafood place and this is it. We will be back in the very near future. Thanks
Rachel
Walked off the street with a group of 11. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and patient. We asked lots of questions from availability of prawns to size of kids meals to vegetarian options. They were extremely polite and helpful and quick to give answers and suggestions. Happily seated us all and to top it off the meal was fresh and the food was impressively yummy!<br/>High rating for everything!!

I was just waiting for my friends when I entered in this warm restaurant, I ordered small chips with battered flake, i can't explain how much I loved the chips n batter was so light n crispy. Best fish&chips ever. Staff was really warm and welcoming. In short, my favourite place for fish n chips in Melbourne 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Love it! When you think fish and chips you usually think greasy... Not here some of the freshest fish I've ever had! Even the chips are hand cut on premise everything is so clean and flavourful. The staff care about what they are doing you can tell. Love it I'll be back again and again. 5stars.

$10 lunch meal is a great deal. Portion was good and the food was yummy. Definitely a great choice for quick lunch before you start to visit other places.

Despite being a fish and chips shop - the cheese burgers are amazing!!!! Best Ive had in St Kilda. Their $10 lunch special which includes the burger, chips and salad is awesome value!!! Seriously, go try it, you won't regret it!!
Maryhaley26
By far the best chips in town, which was a dead give away that management had changed. Made fresh on site, just like homemade chips. Loving the $10 meals too - I'll be back again soon.

Forget the old reviews. Pink Flake is under new, and highly experienced, management. Patel tells me he has 10 years under his belt running one of the legendary 'Hooked' fish n chip shops, and I believe him.<br/><br/>The panko-crumbed flake and chips were exemplary.<br/><br/>Onwards and upwards for this little St Kilda chippie.

"Good Food-Great Service" Deserves the praise.<br/><br/>"Holy Awesomeness!! I ordered Blue Grenadier with Chips&Salad two days ago and it was just fantastic.

I went there with my wife. I ordered Grilled fish with chips and greek salad and my wife had NZ dory with rice and asian slaw salad. It was best meal ever. we both really enjoy the meal. I am definitely going back.
Rebecca Jackson
It would appear Pink Flake is under new ownership with a whole new menu. I had the grilled blue grenadier with chips & greek salad and it was delicious and my partner had the cheese burger which he also said was fab; both an absolute bargin at only $10 on their lunch time special. I would definitely go back!

I was sceptical to eat from Pink Flake as the reviews were mostly on the negative side however we tried it out as it was one of the only fish and chip shops down Acland Street in St. Kilda. Their menu was good, however different to the one shown on Zomato for some reason? It was very busy inside which was not good considering the inside is very small, though it was a sunny Sunday afternoon after all. I ordered a lunch deal of grilled calamari with brown rice and the house salad as a side which was only $10 for the meal, something I was surprised with considering most seafood places are expensive, though it did not lack in quality. The service was quick considering how busy it was; we took our meals away to sit at the beach and it was relatively tasty! The calamari was slightly tough and lacked a little flavour however the house salad was a good compliment to the meal. I would recommend Pink Flake and will most likely return in the future 😀

After being ordered to go to the end of the bar to order my meal I should have known that this was going to be a bad experience ! Pink Flake certainly didn't let me down, what a mess ! Oily greasy Fish which was as thin a piece of fish you could ever imagine, chips that tasted like they had been frozen for a weeks and service from back packers that were bored stupid like schoolkids waiting for the school bell to go home !! Pink Flake even the name sounds like uncooked fish ? I am sorry but this joint was a miss mash of a fish and chip shop trying to pretend it is an upmarket eatery of some sort. Awful is the only word I can use, the quality of the food was appauling from freezing cold salads to fish served with no garnish no nothing just a piece of fish ? Potatoe cakes like rubber nothing tasted fresh at all The two other options Mammas Boys and Tommy Tucker make this joint look like amateurs hour, Do your self a big favour and eat anywhere but this joint - really

A little surprised to see experiences in contrast to mine.  My family and I visited during the first few days of winter for a good fish and chips and that's exactly what we got.  Nice big pieces of crispy golden batter and delicious steamy cod fillet inside that broke at the flake.  The chips were crispy too and were not overly greasy.  The lady owner was friendly and the service was good so the next time my family and I at St. Kilda's for fish'n'chips we'd be back for more.  Already looking forward to it.  And I almost forgot to mention the reasonable prices for such a touristy area.
Zeke
Awful. Pre-packaged frozen calamari and prawns. Dry frozen flake. Expected a lot more when walking in. Have had great chips from there before but this time even the chips were horrible. Disappointing
Adhya
My seafood basket looks good but the taste is way too far from my expectations. The battered fish is oily, tasteless and fishy. The calamari I believe is a prepackaged ones, no flavor, rubbery and dry. I found half part or my potato cakes is raw. The chips is disappointing too because its thick, bland and not cooked perfectly. This shop also have problems with the customer service.
Kylie Carapeto
Horrible! My kiddies had calamari and fish and amongst all the disgusting batter was barely a piece of fish. What was there so so dry and horrible. Calamari was practically batter and you call them potato cakes, they are literally take out of the freezer and thrown in oil and take out. We had the 'family by the sea' and it was appalling. So disappointed that I gave you my money. The owners/managers are very rude, abrupt and white arrogant yet the staff they employee are lovely. This place will never get my money again and please do not even waste your time and valuable money on this place. AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID

Apparently Pink Flake has mediocre reviews online. From my experience, the Pink Flake's fish quality is not something to look out for, but we thoroughly enjoyed the chips because they were crispy, fluffy and very potato-eyish. Yum.
Seaninoz
Can't see these guys lasting too long. Reheated oven chips, stale burger buns and dry fish. Is this the best one can expect from a chipper at the sea-side?
Starrie
Bad. Quite possible the worst fish and chips I've ever had. The flake I had was tiny, tastless and dry. The calamari rings pretty much had no calamari. It was all batter. <br/><br/>I expect so much better for St Kilda.
Peter.fotop
Tastes like pie hole. Had The Lord of the rings pack and got a drink with it which was a pricey $18+ and wasn't allowed to change the tartare sauce for an aioli, so I was already feeling set for disappointment. Food came and the calamari rings tasted like 4 week old crab sticks, the chips were gross and had no flavour and to top it off I had to fork out an extra $2 for a tomato sauce and aioli sachet which tasted disgusting
Facebook User
Excellent fish and chips. We loved it. Had two flakes, one grilled and one fried. Both done to perfection. The fried one was succulent on the inside while crispy on the outside without being oily. The grilled one was well seasoned and delicious. <br/>Serving of chips was very, very generous and the potato cakes were great, again crispy without being oily. <br/><br/>They deserve a much higher rating than they have. It's not a fancy restaurant, but it is a great fish and chips shop.
Ed
My three experiences at Pink Flake so far do not corroborate the abysmal 39% rating it's garnered. As you step in, you might be struck by how it could be the most immaculate fish and chippery you've come across. The air bears little hint of grease and meal remnants are cleared promptly. All the hot food is also cooked to order so that means no soggy fish and chips. Despite being situated in a tourist precinct, Pink Flake does not bear elevated prices like the rest along Acland St. A couples pack is $17.80 while $4.30 gets you the smallest box of chips, which is still massive. Service may be indifferent at times but certainly by no means discourteous. All in all, one of the best cheap eats in St Kilda.
Iam
Cra# wrong order. Very average food. all in all move another 2 meters to another cafe
Natalie
Fish was good, particularly the grilled flake, however I was shocked to get calamari that is fake... Disappointing!
Adelehaywood1
Not good enough. Very poor customer service, rude attitude from that I imagine to be the manager, who was also carrying a child while working next to the deep fryers, that made me feel really uncomfortable and looked so unprofessional. The wait on our food was way too long for fish and chips, overheard other customers that were also complaining about the waiting time. When our food finally came out it was definitely not worth the wait. Would not recommend at all
Josh H
Ordered a simple couples box on a gorgeous evening expecting them to meet the 20 mins wait described and catch the sunset. 45 mins later we were met with no apology and very sub par food. Avoid this place for all costs.
Ronnie Zachariadis
Absolutely shocking food , processed calamari really bad really bad brought to management attention that I was clearly not satisfied with my meal and was offered a potatoe cake what a joke seriously this is 2013 people wake up !
