Review Babu Ji - St Kilda

Absolutely fantastic restaurant!! So much better than just your typical Indian restaurant. It was absolutely delicious!! Great food!! Brilliant Service!! Couldn't recommend more highly 💯💯

We absolutely loved the food at the restaurant. One of the best Indian food served in Melbourne. We had booked tables for a small family celebration. Henal was the maitre d restaurant and she made sure that our party enjoyed the best food while we celebrated our moment. I highly recommend visiting the restaurant and enjoying a hearty meal. Do try their entree as its very tasty.

Loved the chicken nachos, Califlower 65 and paneer makhani. Nice ambience and good service, would absolutely recommend this place for a twist on authentic Indian food 😊

Came for the Tuesday vegan all you can eat and was not disappointed. The curries were delicious, the rice was light and fluffy, and the garlic naan was freshly made and incredible. I thought we'd be ordering more but the first serving they gave us filled us up so much I had to roll home. As far as a value meal, I think it's not a great saving for $25 a head, but the taste and quality were 10 out of 10. We'll definitely be coming back.

Very disappointing treatment to Uber drivers, have to pickup the food from the back door which is very dirty and really not worth the wait. This is during lockdown and no one is in the restaurant to disturb if that’s the logic.. I asked the workers for my order and they didn’t give me a time for how long I should wait.. We are helping you with your business, Uber partners.. there is not need for any attitude.. Photos attached. *update later next November 2021 I went again and the place was cleaned and well lit .. a big change.. thanks

Truly excellent quality Indian for our banquet for twelve. Fair value pricing for the top quality. Service lacks a little professionalism and attentiveness, but is certainly very congenial. The place works well for 2 or a large group.

I ordered Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, Pork Vindaloo, Garlic Nan for our family lunch. As photo shows we only ate butter chicken and nan. Pork Vindaloo is way too salty can’t eat for human. Seriously too salty!!! Tandoori is salty as well but can eat for human however, it was over cooked so very dry. I enjoyed Indian food often but this is worst experienced. I have to say thanks for giving me free beer but please taste it before have over to the customer.

Best Indian I've had in Australia. Butter Chicken is AMAZING and fantastic service.
Saloni H Narad
Very well presented food, food was flavorsome and customer service.. the best!! Specially by Hina..she was a delight :) Will surely come again to try more from the menu..Not given 5 stars only for overly sweet kulfi stick :P

Beautiful food. Relaxed vibe. Manages to be both playful and sophisticated in its interpretations of Indian street food. They are equally thoughtful with meat and vegetarian dishes which makes it a great place for a group with different dietary needs. Highly recommend.

Food was pricey and nothing pleased my taste buds a great deal. Presentation for snacks was nice but felt short on flavours especially for my Indian pallate. I didn't like how creamy and sweet most of the main dishes were like the dal Makhani and butter chicken. And there was only one chicken dish to choose from! Nans were nice however for the price we paid all up we were not blown away by the food. Service was decent.

Sensational experience! We had the set menu and would highly recommend to everyone! Such fantastic value for money. The best Indian food I've ever had, so many delicious flavours. I would go back in a heartbeat and will be recommending to others. Service was fantastic too, very quick to refill drinks and the guys loved being able to get up and choose their own beer from the fridge :) was great to have the dishes explained to us as quite a few we haven't tried before. Great night, great experience and GREAT food!

Best Indian food I've had in soooo long (and I eat Indian a lot). I'm so glad we went on the recommendations- all true and better! It's so fresh, quality produce with good flavours and made with a lot of love. The butter chicken was so tender we ordered many of the dishes and can't fault one. I highly recommend this place! Good food, nice environment and really fast and friendly service. I wish they weren't so far away but won't stop me from coming back! Will be looking out for their food truck for sure too. Great work guys need more of your fresh and fine Indian food in Melbourne!

The best and most innovative Indian restaurant in Melbourne. Amazing dishes that test your taste buds and thoughts of what we consider Indian food to be. Absolutely delicious with amazing staff, friendly atmosphere and Bollywood movies on the wall is a great touch. A must visit restaurant

Love it ... very customer service oriented complimented with yummy food ! They let me in even though the closed sign was up !! I mean I am sold forever ! Love their deco and the way food is presented ;) Seriously good food ! Drunken Pani puri a must ! ;)

Food was quite good, however pricy. The service was very disorganised and head waiter did not appear to have any idea that it was a schmozzle.
Joh Rundell
Honestly not a fan. Food was expensive, service was bad and food was only above average. Forgot about the wine we ordered and the naans. Had to remind the waitress about both items. The size of the naans and butter chicken saved them a star.
Lee Murray
Love, love the food. Go with the banquet the best way to have a variety of there fabulous tasty little delights. Service is fantastic!! Also excellent selection of boutique beers. Will be back for there tasty morsels.
Christine Kendrick
We had a really delicious meal, each dish had it's own flavours. We shared our meal between 3 of us. All enjoyed it immensely. Service was great, food arrived promptly. Wine was superb.
Kirst Trethowan
Such authentic delicious Indian food. After having spent a couple of weeks in India last year this was right up there with the best food we had there. Such an awesome selection of vegetarian dishes - we will be back often. Great service too :-)
Chris Hasker
Great food, great service. Lamb chops were freakin awesome
Pete Stevens
Totally love this place! It brings back the real Indian flavours and styles from my trips to India, definitely not a western take on Indian! Worth the 5 stars and more and always high on quality and service.
Merete Prahl
The staff are excellent, knowledgable and attentive. My husband and I always go for a banquet, which leaves us with no room for kulfi, but we have to have it! Too delish not to.

The best Indian in Melbourne hands down!! A must try!
B
Best curry in Melbourne, restaurant catered to our requirements. Papdi chat and prawn momos we’re both delicious. Big portions and really tasty garlic naan. Would 100% recommend
Carla
Really disappointing meal. Butter chicken was too sweet and pork vindaloo was bland. Rice was pre cooked packet rice. Naan was greasy. Not sure what happened as I’ve had better meals from Babu Ji before, but will not order from there again. There are much better and cheaper Indian take away options.
HobartLife
Had a craving for a curry and Babu Ji did not disappoint. Tastiest Indian meal I have had in a long time. I had the lamb korma and tandoori chicken. Lamb was fall apart tender and korma sauce was delicious. Tandoori chicken was juicy and flavoursome with a nice char. Yum
Julian
Had the garlic and chive naan from here recently, and have been getting it again and again. Really delicious and different to other naans I have tried. Would recommend!
Rose
Was extremely disappointed after seeing such a high rating on Zomato. It was very overpriced and underwhelming. All round lacking flavour. The oil had split in the lamb korma so had oil pool sitting on top, the poppadoms were stale, and to top it off had a long hair in the onion Bhaji.
Lucky__lina
Support local restaurants!!! Babu Ji are currently offering 30% off with a free beer as well. I ordered their butter chicken, which was deliciously fragrant and full of flavour. I also got some naan bread - there are different flavour options to choose from, so I got the garlic & chive, and the cheese one too. Both were great!! Will definitely be back to try other things from their menu!
Ana
Visited a few weeks ago and the food was excellent especially the naan, paneer tikka and kofta! Enjoyed immensely ✨ Only downfall was the service was quite slow and the food took a while to come out! Overall a good experience!

Our friends were insistent that we visit Indian restaurant after playing tennis, and not many options around St Kilda we had to come to Babuji and thank God we did.

The Palak Paneer, Lamb Korma and Beef Curry (even though the fusion version) were amazing.

Quality and Flavors justified the price.

Just 1 thing: Goans or Nowhere around India anyone uses Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass in their beef curry so a fusion dish must not be passed as Imdian.

3 / 5 (A year ago)

Quite in a mood to have Indian food, and having heard rave reviews of Babuji, it was just the right time for us to go here for Afternoon meal.

After a very warm welcome from the lady attendant, we settled to go for their 'All You Can Eat Meal' for $ 28 each as we weren't in a mood to have drinks or starters. Their fixed menu meal consisted of a Lamb Curry, Dal Makhani, Butter Chicken and Rice, all unlimited i.e. as much as you can eat.

Though the food quality was really good, we couldn't help but feel that it was tailored to non-Indian palates. That's the only reason, probably, we did not appreciate it as much since almost all the dishes lacked the robust flavors of spices that Indian culinary is known for.

Dal Makhani, lightly on a sweeter side, was the only saving grace of this meal. It's been the best Black Dal we have eaten so far, although the hint of sweetness could have turned us off but the right presence of spices kind of balanced it just right.

Butter Chicken was way too sweet for our taste, though the chicken was cooked nicely. Lamb curry was almost bland...Not even a subtle hint of spices.

Rice cannot be substituted with Naan even though they share the same pricing.

Vegans and Vegetarians have decent options.

Slightly over-priced!!

Quality, service and dal were the only decent factors to rate them on, and thus 3/5

Great vibe and great butter chicken curry

Disappointed tonight. We have come to Babu Ji countless times and it’s usually our favourite Indian restaurant in Melbourne. However, tonight after we ordered our usual menu items we were told that there was a special where for basically the same amount of money for what we had ordered we could add on an extra entree. We were very surprised to see that when the bill arrived we had been charged about an extra $25 more than what the menu items would have otherwise come too. We thought ‘basically’ meant maybe a few dollars difference. The portion of the butter chicken was smaller than usual (not sure if it was due to set menu we were unknowingly signed up to, a new standard or just a one off poor serve?) Instead of the 3 naan we thought we had ordered, we also got a single serve. The food was still delicious.... just not the order we thought we were getting and it turned out to be a very expensive dinner!

Dined here last night and I must say it's one of the better Indian restaurants I've tried in Melbourne. Service was professional and I noticed they do good specials at different times of the week.

We had the samosas to start with and they were delicious! The pastry was great, not too thick (as it often is with samosas) and the filling tasty with sauces that perfectly complimented it. I'm glad we ordered them although be aware that the samosas are quite big, they were almost the size of a meal in itself! It would be great if they made them half the size for a lower price.

I ordered the Butter Chicken which was delicious. There was no spice to it at all (I like it medium) and I didn't get asked how I'd like it. Next time I'd specify that to suit my taste better. But it was nice and creamy with a good portion of chicken. The naan was pretty good, I liked that it was light and buttery although could have been more fresh.

Overall, it was a good experience - will be back!
Lauren Millard
Very tasty, was pleasantly impressed. The naan was delicious along with the rest of the food and great portion sizes. We couldn't finish everything so took it home in containers which made for a great meal the next night too.
Richavats124
Poorly lit interior. No spoon and napkins were provided. The dal makhani as well as the korma were very sweet . Other than that naans and papdi chat were delicious!
SohzFoodTrail
Well placed curtlelies, good collection of beer. Very good tandoori. Curries were not authentic indian taste , however food was good.
Pricing is very high.
Salspot
Nice place for dinner with friends. We used a zomato gold subscription to get our second most expensive dish free, so great value. There were a good range of curries.

Decent Indian Food.

Food 4.4/5
Service 3.4/5
Ambience 3.3/5
Overall 3.9/5

Some of the best Indian we’ve had in Melbourne. The samosa, chicken tikka and butter chicken exceeded our expectations.

ALL YOU CAN EAT TUESDAYS
I went for all you can eat vegan curry and my partner just ordered one of the meat curries of the menu.
Partner's curry looked good, but for $25 dollars it doesn't come with any rice or naan.
Vegan all you can eat feast curries are not on the menu (a shame as i worked myself up to try some of them) but rather just whatever they make for the night i guess? But you get rice and 3 different cups of curry: a lentil based curry, soy protein one and a veggie curry and all three were pretty yummy. Self serve beer fridge is great too!
AnotherAsianAbroad
Ordered 2 vegetarian curries , a naan and rice for delivery.

Quick service however food was alright. Nothing too special. Good portion sizes though as it was enough for 2 people.

Will not return

Great, professional and friendly service. Enough staff even though it was busy we felt well attended to by the courteous and well informed team. Excellent samosas. Went for the $25 vegan feast on Tuesdays and had excellent, tasty, non greasy curries that weren't too hot but with lots of flavour. Rice was also excellent. Overall had a lovely time. Good night place for a date who likes Indian.

The caramel hock is absolutely delicious. Have tried many different dishes and cannot pick a fault on them. Pretty happy about the food. We will go back again.

Devnangari scripts on the walls, all pictures connecting to India and bollywood cinema posters collage adorning wall near entrance... This is not description of restaurant in any of the cities in India but in Melbourne ☺️
Menu card cover is Royal Couple in Traditional Indian attire makes you feel good before swifting through menu listings.
After office hours in cold evening everyone thought of enjoying Indian cuisine at Babu Ji. Tables were well spaced, glasses plates pre-arranged. Surprisingly service was little slow even though there were not many customers in restaurant. Our selection was Chicken Bhuna with Nan basket (3 nans) for two nonvegeterians and dal makhani with kashmiri nan for lone vegetarian.
Both curries were nicely made with proper spices making sure we had Indian taste so far...
Portions were sufficient but prices could have been better (Their take away menu is given as souvenir). Overall had fulfilling dinner at Babu Ji👍
Flying Forward
I hate to use the term “modern Indian” because they do stick to authenticity (with a few surprises here and there), however the execution is a little more refined here at Babu Ji.
The atmosphere is also clean and modern, well lit and comfortable.

• Pani Puri – the zingy tamarind sauce is served separately so you just pour a little in just before eating, keeping the pastry crisp. Good textures going on.
• Butter Chicken – a little on the sweet side, but also mellowed out with the cream. A little thicker than other versions, but still delicious.
• Dal Makhani – thick and almost creamy, the dal almost had a smokey flavour.
• Lamb Bhuna – the lamb was very tender and the gravy was nicely spicy.
• Naan – Fresh out of the tandoor, the bread is fluffy, chewy, with bubbly blistery charred bits. Love it.

Babu Ji is well recommended for discovering new and old dishes, with a range of wines and beers selected to match.

(dined with Hungry Pen)

We had a booking at 11.30am on a Saturday and despite us rocking up on time the restaurant wasn't yet open. Not a good sign.

We stood around for 15 minutes searching where to go when we checked the door again and behold - it was open! The dining room is quite trendy and comfortable when it's empty.

We had pappadums and pani puri for starters. The sauces for the pappadums were fresh, and the pani puri was AMAZING. It was like a flavour explosion in your mouth of crispy dough, minted yoghurt, pomegranates and this sweet and sour tamarind sauce that you pour in. It was amazing.

We also ordered the prawn momos and they were absolutely divine. Chopped up prawns encased in delicate dumpling skin, steamed and covered in a coconut curry sauce. It was just delicious!

For mains we had butter chicken, daal and the lamb bhuna with extra spice, along with the 3 naan basket.

The butter chicken was sweet and thick as expected and the chicken tender. The fav was the lamb bhuna - totally recommend you order it with extra chilli. It was hot, sour and the lamb was fall apart tender. The daal was decent and the bread light and fluffy.

I think they have just started opening for Saturday lunches, as there was only one other table of 2 that came in. It also seemed like the guy who served us was working alone - he might have been the chef/owner? I felt for him, having owned and managed a restaurant before on my own.

We will definitely be back for our favs and try new dishes - with extra spice! Highly recommended.

Linda
I was looking forward to visiting this place and was thoroughly disappointed. Charging patrons $23 for a curry on average, one would expect both quality and quantity. Unfortunately it disappointed on both fronts. Both mains we had were just not very good in flavour or taste. They just didn’t quite hit the mark. The naan was average and the rice significantly undersized for $6. With a pricey menu like that, I would suggest you taking your money and spending it at Tonka or Atta instead!

This outlet is serving one of the best indian diseases I have been many times before and this place never disappoint us.
Nice ambience
Tasty food
Friendly staff

EDIT - My partner and I dined in recently, we have been back since as the first visit at the restaurant was exceptional. The staff, ambience, decor and more importantly the food was fabulous.

We ordered the butter chicken, beef masala, rice and roti all of which were delicious. The curries packed a punch with flavour and the meat just so tender. Our wines complimented the beautiful food.

Our waiter was friendly and very approachable. thank you Babu Ji. I highly recommend to dine in and to try this lovely Indian restaurant.

5/5/2017 Original Score 3.5

Ordered through Deliveroo and the food arrived within a reasonable time frame. We ordered the butter chicken, batata vada, rice and naan. The curry, rice and naan were very good however the batata vada wasn't what I had expected. It was alright but I was actually expecting a curry, I should of googled it before I ordered it as I wanted something different. One thing to mention is that I think the menu is quite limited, no typical curries like your rogan josh or vindaloo.

Amazing food. if you are in Melbourne and love Indian food, this is the place to be. Try the Mango Lassi. its awesome.... The staff is very helpful
Jason Cheung
Over priced, had take away, to be advised it was over an hour delivery wait time. Adjusted and called to advise would pick up instead, at no point did they say or advise that the charge would still be incurred. I admit that it was through menulog or the app that my gf used but they made no attempt whatsoever to help resolve the issue. Food itself wasn't bad, the flavours were okay, but seriously over priced for what it is. Service was average.

Went along to the vegan night on Tuesday and the food was excellent, staff were super attentive and lovely. Had a great night and would recommend.

Moti Mahal Indian Restaurant on Glenferrie Road in Malvern really knows India top dishes! Our skilled chefs work hard to cook some of the best Indian cuisines in the area and deliver it with a smile. To know more please visit at moti mahal restaurant or call on (03) 9509 2931
Lin B
In my opinion one of the best Indian restaurants in the area. They just get flavours spot on.

It is a little more pricey than some but well worth it.

I have eaten in restaurant and had delivery - both experiences were good.

Tuesday $25 vegetarian all you can eat was very nice.. though i do wish there was at least 4 varieties of curry instead of three.

Highly recommend - must try.
Lisa Giles
Really enjoyed our dinner here! The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious! The only thing I wasn’t a massive fan of was the goat curry, a tad too much cardamom. But I loved the rest of the curries and street food selection that we ordered. The mango lassi was also delish!
Abhinav Khandelwal
Very easy to miss restaurant. It's at corner of Georges, we had trouble finding it. Fancy restaurant with Hindi slang and proverb all around. Single page menu, does not offer 1000 dishes so your choice are limited and don't need to stress your brain. Prices are on higher sides. Taste was good.
Foodie4Melb
Where do I start??? We went for the 4 course tasting menu for $49 per person which is enough food for about 4 people and all you can eat bread and rice. The simosas were amazing, so was the chicken tandoori and the beautifully creamy fish curry. The beef curry was really nice just probably better by itself than ontop of all that food as it's quite rich. The dessert was a nice unexpected surprise with what we had paid for and topped off the courses really well. The staff were super friendly and caring. All in all absolutely loveee it, wish I had been sooner and will definitely be back.
Kimberley Leggett
Heard great things about this place and had to check it out since I've newly moved into the area. Came on a quiet weeknight with my partner and shared a few dishes - Papapdoms, the GF Naan (their speciality) Dahl, Tandoori Chicken and a Mutton Khorma.

The inside is simple, the service efficient and the food was pretty good. I also liked the self-serve beer fridge with an interesting array of different beers. I was impressed they had some cool GF options too like the Shnitzer Brau (which is a new fav).

Overall I'd come back however perhaps on the Sunday for the Bottomless Buffet of 3 curries + rice!
Krazykat
After hearing a fair bit about Babu Ji .... my expectations were quiet high.
The restaurant itself is pretty average ... I was expecting a modern slick fitout.
Food ? Pretty pricey for Indian and portions fairly tight.
Excellent naan !!! Really good.
Daal , karhi ... pretty good ...
Service was pretty good ..... nice friendly people ...
I ask myself just one question.
Would I go back again ?
Unlikely.
KatMmm
The atmosphere is pretty stale, with the all-concrete surrounds making dinner chats very difficult. The service was appallingly pushy, trying to clear our plates mid-meal and wiping the table down while we were sitting there. The restaurant wasn’t even full and we’d been there less than an hour!
On the plus side, the daal, butter chicken and naan were amazing. The Lagan ki Boti was overwhelming in flavour, and wasn’t particularly well balanced. The bhwarma mushroom was nice, but a tiny serve (2 very small mushrooms, cut in half).
Overall, not worth the price given the other great Indian places in the area.
Rithvik Chand
Excellent service. Food arrived very quickly and was very nice. Atmosphere is also nice with an intricate theme. However there weren't many vegetarian options which was somewhat disappointing. Should definitely check it out!
AL Lun
Food is good.
Tandoori chicken is very good. However, when we wanted to cancel just two simple serves of rice before it was even served, we were told that we werent allowed to cancel?? It was just two serves of rice??
Vikas Mehta
Over hyped place. Don't have many options. Butter chicken is the only chicken dish available and that is way too sweet as well. Poor customer service as well.
Yvonne
First time in Indian restaurant, got surprised! Traditional curry food but really delicious! ! Highly recommend pots dishes! And good service!! Will come again
Kidswholovetoeat
A fabulous take on Indian ! Love the gluten free naan. The chaat and panipuri our favourites ! A bit spicy on some dishes for the kids .
Fish curry was loved by all
Ads Davies
Just got Uber eats through these guys. Ordered the naan, butter chicken and the tandoori chicken. Everything was pretty good but nothing special. The tandoori chicken was bland even with the green sauce.
Kerala1
New (to me) spin on Indian food with full and fresh flavours. Groovy decor and friendly staff. The iced tea was a feast for the senses! I would go back just for that!
Sunnyummy
Small little treat.. don't judge a book by its cover... must say one of the best Indian meals I have.. specially the modern twist to some very popular dishes... live the idea about the beer fridge with a great selection of local and imported beers
Elmocookie
Came here nice and early before peak hour! Service was good (better than other reviews by the looks of it). Enjoyed the tandoori chicken, prawn entree, lamb main. The naan was cooked to be crispy and tasty. The fish curry was a bit too sweet for our liking but overall some good flavours here. Will be back for sure!
Good Food Good Mood
I was in love as soon as I saw the menu. I'm talking the front of the menu, I hadn't even read it yet but the fun visual was so charming I couldn't wait to eat. We decided on the four courses for $39 per person which was so much food for the three of us that we couldn't even finish it (and two of us are HUGE eaters). We ordered a few peach iced teas which at $10 was a bit ridiculous and not at all aligned to the value you get from the food pricing, also disproportionate to being able to order a cocktail for $13. On to the good stuff LOVED the staff LOVED the atmosphere and interior with Bollywood movies going on. We had the phenomenal samosas with a delicious chutney, naans, rice, raita, salmon tikka and two curries including a yummy butter chicken. The coolest Indian restaurant I have ever been to
N
Haven't eaten here recently, but I will say this: their kulfi was better than any I have had in India. And as for the mains, order the more unfamiliar dishes and you will not be disappointed. You can't get a lot of this stuff anywhere else in Melbourne. For that reason alone this place is a treasure.
Tom S
This place is fantastic. After just returning from india, this place totally hit the spot. Such a fantastic modern Australian twist on traditional Indian food. We did the banquet thing which was the perfect amount of food. We had the idli (real standout dish - super fluffy idli with an incredibly flavorsome sauce), the harlayi fish tikka, butter chicken and the goat chicken - all delicious. They also do really good veggie dishes too - the chole tikka and dal makhani - yum! It's a nice simple set up here, clean and tidy but not overly fancy and I think that is a good thing and made everything rather homely and cosy. Only thing that I had qualms with was that it was pretty noisy. Would definitely repeat offend here!
R
Babu ji presents a modern Indian twist in its spread. Flavours are good especially the starters were all really good. We ordered tandoori chicken, hariyali fish and aloo tikki. All were beautiful. Followed by butter chicken and fish. Not the best flavours but still okay. Naan basket was really yummy!
Charizard
Had their Fish Curry, Butter Chicken and Garlic & Chives Naan. Both the Fish Curry and Butter Chicken were rich and packed with flavours. However, I felt that the Fish Curry was slightly too saltish while the chicken was not as tender as I expected. The Garlic & Chives Naan was decent, but definitely not best I have had. Nevertheless, both curries were flavoursome and went well with the naan.
David Hewitt
Great Indian food! Actually one of the better ones we've tried in the city. The samosas are huge and absolutely love the mint sauce on top! Curries are all very tasty. The garlic and chives naan is super garlicky but delicious!!! Finished off with some delectable donuts in syrup. Service was super friendly. Love the experience and would definitely be back for more!
Brenda Digby
Great food and great place. My only recommendations is please ease off the garlic on the naan - it was too overpowering! And please add a cheese naan to the menu!
The Epicurist
We recently ordered takeout from Babu Ji as I'd heard some rave reviews. It's always hard to know how much to order via takeout but we chose 3 dishes plus rice and naan, and judging by the price we thought we'd have plenty with some for leftovers... unfortunately we were very disappointing by the portion sizes.

The food was delicious and a bit unusual compared to standard Indian food, but I really struggle to pay that much for delivery food. I'm sure if we dined in the restaurant (where you're paying for the staff/services and other overheads) the price is easier to swallow.
JZY
通过Ubereats叫的外卖,没有期待的那么好,后来发现外卖是不同的菜单,可能下次还是要在那里吃,因为看着其他人的照片觉得应该还是不错的。Ordered through Ubereats. I thought the portion size must be huge by looking at the price on the menu but obviously I was wrong. Papdi Chaat and Naan kinda met my expectation the others did not. Seems like there are two different menus for takeaway and dine-in.
Marco Cedriano
We went many times to baby ji and overall was pricy but good. Unfortunately last time my wife took tandoori chicken and she has been food poisoned😏😕 so bad that she had to go to the doctor and she had unwell for more then four days. When she call to advise about what happened the only thing they said was"next time you come we will try to look after you"!!! You have just poisoned me and I paid for that! Bad bad bad. Never again, I'm not going to pay to be poisoned!
Bernardo Jacobi
If you want some serious and delicious Indian food, this is your place. Been here about 5 times, the fish curry is just unforgettable. Their basmati rice is always perfectly cooked. Try the pani puri as well, yum!!! I can't get enough of this place. Good service, clean, friendly staff.
Fanny Foodie
Food was just awesome the naan and all their veggie options were perfect !! But the service was terrible. Waiter barely talked english and didn't want me to order rice as i didn't take a hot dish. Anyway except the service it was very good . And the desert are not very good neither.
Facebook User
Best Indian in the area. Pay for it but well worth it. Me and friends came here on a Saturday night and it wasn't over crowded and we were able to chat quite easily. I would suggest that management turn the heating up though as it was quite chilly sitting inside.
Gastrology
In a class of its own, Babu Ji is a stunning Indian restaurant in St Kilda. The ambience is modern and relaxed and features Hindu Disco music and quirky images of 1970s porno-moustached “Babus”. The extensive menu features the restaurant's expertise in Indian cuisine with favourites such as butter chicken and other exotic dishes you will not get anywhere else.
Damien Zuch
Very expensive for what you receive. My wife ordered a main Salmon, ended up making a second dinner at home.

Small portion sizes, too expensive. Won't be returning even though food was tasty.
Anjul Sahu
Place is small and congested but full of Indian taste. Entrées are one of the best I have tried in Melbourne among Indian restaurants. I am giving 3.5 as I feel the dishes are quite expensive though delicious. Drink collection is carefully selected.
Boneheaded
Mediocre food. Mediocre service. Over cooked fish, over cooked chicken, and warm beer. And no "thank you for dining with us" on the way out, a.k.a. thank you for spending your money here and not elsewhere!
Heidi
This is got to be one of the best inidian places in st kilda. Awesome fit out, cool music and amazing and thoughtful service! The absolute must thing to order is the pani puri, it's sweet and spicy but just all round delicious!

Always love a night out at BabuJi. Great food, great service and electric buzz. Or getting a couple of the faves (coconut fish curry... mmmmm) delivered. Haven't had better on this side of Melbourne yet.

Best Indian food in Melbourne! Menu changes every 2 months but the butter chicken and the lamb karinafa (?) I had were to die for. Great selection of beers. Very clean food, full of flavour and you'll leave looking forward to coming back.

The starters (from the street) is what its all about at Babi Ji. Very interesting dishes and fantastic presentation.

Most of the main dishes (from the pot) are pretty standard a little better in quality than your average Indian place.

Aloo chat - Just Amazing, also it comes with two and is great for sharing with 4 people. Cut with ease despite its looks.

Sarson fish tikka - Best tasting dish on the menu. The spice rub is not overpowering and the purple sauce (maybe Beetroot dairy) really makes the dish.

Tulsi Paneer Tikka - a little dry but a good taste. Ask for a little extra basil sauce as it needs it if dry.

Goat nawabi - interesting spice mix, meat was tender.

Butter chicken - a nice butter chick, rich and delusions.

Dal Amritsari - very nice, the different lentils add an nice textural component to the dish. The sauce is a little starchy but has a rich nutty flavour.

Even though my blog started out purely as a recipe based one, over the past two years I have become more and more interested in all aspects of food like restaurants and dining out, growing your own food, local markets, regional food producers, farming stories etc…. But recently when I was invited to the launch of the ‘Food for Thought’ campaign, an initiative by Opportunity International (Australia), it was taking a step towards one of my food philosophies – using food as a medium not just for sustenance but for the greater good of the world.

It was nice to see small changes to the menu; especially important when you visit a restaurant from time to time and do not want to get bored eating the same thing. We chose the $59 set menu this time which is a six course menu.. quite an elaborate one so make sure you go hungry!

As always, the dishes were really delicious prepared with care using good quality ingredients. Keep up the good job.

This is the best Indian meal we have ever eaten. We stopped going to Indians in Australia as we never had a good experience. Babu Ji was, we both agreed, the best Indian we've had anywhere in the world. Period. We had the 4 course meal (salmon tikka, tandoori chicken, a kind of special dumpling), plus popadoms and s pickle tray, and for mains we had butter chicken and a lamb curry. It came with wonderful rice and amazing naans (partic garlic and chive). The mains and rice/bread were unlimited- you could just order more until you were full. We also had dessert (rice pudding and kulfi - both amazing).

This meal made me me so happy. It's great to have found a brilliant, top quality Indian in Melbourne. Plus it's great value. The set 4 course meal was just $39!! The desserts were an extra $8. Ridiculous, really. I could not recommend this place highly enough.

It is quite hard to find good authentic Indian restaurants in this city and this is the best in Melbourne. Authentic , relaxed and exiting menu with traditional offerings. Great flavour and not overly heavy. I had the goat curry, which I would highly recommend to anyone who likes Indian food.

Great foods.. I had Pani Puri and tandoor chicken, I have to say, their tandoor chicken are so succulent, the best I have ever had. Nice ambiance, friendly staff. ... These foods are quite pricey :( ... Oh well, you get what you pay
Melbourne Foodie Girl

What a great find in the local area. Modern Indian food that tastes amazing with a few experimental dishes thrown in that are to die for. Service is very friendly, will definitely go back

I've been hearing good things about this St Kilda restaurant over the past month and was eager to see for myself what all the fuss was about. Babu Ji is situated on Grey Street St Kilda in The George Hotel complex. The place was pretty full in fact it was pretty much the only restaurant in St Kilda that had any life in it. Lucky for me my mate had already arrived and secured a table. It was Sunday and they had their all you can eat Thali, which simply translates to 'a round plate serving food'. In this case it was a selection of three dishes for $25.
Once seated I went through the menu, but there was something missing. Babu Ji doesn't have a beverage list instead they have two double door fridges full of a great selection of beer that you simply went up to and grabbed what you wanted, which was novel, but raised a few RSA questions. If you wanted wine I imagine that you'd have to BYO that one, with a $10 corkage for each bottle.
We opted for the Thali, but had to pry out of out waiter what was on offer, which was lentils, butter chicken and a curry goat. Our first round of dishes came out and looked and smelled amazing, so I was looking forward to digging in. I had the butter chicken, the meat was tender and melted in your mouth and the sauce was fragrant and creamy. It wasn't the best butter chicken that I've had, but it was nice enough. Next was the goat. Being a curry I expected a little heat but was disappointed. The meat was cooked well but the sauce had a bitter taste to it. Next was the lentils. Now I'm not a huge fan of lentils so to be honest just found this dish boring. Whilst the food was overall good and the atmosphere was good it was the service that was lacking. We had to literally waive down a waiter to ask for more dishes, which took several attempts before we actually received our second round. Most of the wait staff just looked disinterested and if I was to be honest walked around like extras on the set of the walking dead.
Look it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. What did look good was the a la carte menu, so when I return I'll certainly order off the menu as I felt the all you can eat was a bit blah.

The only thing i would like to appreciate is the presentation but if it comes to the food extremely expensive and not upto the quantity, well the ambience is not fascinating and the amount they charge is way higher thn anywhere else and with better taste for sure. Not delighted but not disappointed.

Good place but not great , 2 expensive for a thali ! The food was good but the options are very limited and high priced ! Unlimited thali with only 4 items....

Amazing food. Ordered the $25 all you can eat. Food came out really fast. Definitely worth a visit. Probably one of the best Indian dinners I've had
Nomnomnom
The food is amazing, it's fresh and rich in flavor, had a talk with the owner, they used the best ingredients shipped from around the world, and he chefs are from five star hotel. He said the menu changes every two month so no point taking photos of the menu, which is fun for the adventurers!

Gorgeous food and great value on a Sunday with the '3 dish bottomless plate'.. cash only however. I really liked the relaxed atmosphere and the help yourself beer fridge was like having dinner with friends. Will definitely be back!

Maybe I'm just a sucker for Indian (yes I am) but wow! We had a turmeric Blue Grenedier curry with tasty little while mustard seeds and a slow cooked lamb (sourced from Mt Macedon), oh and aged Basmati rice (there you go I always thought aged rice was a bad thing, apparently not).
They seem to specialize in gluten free options as well with plenty of options in their menu.
Sure to be a repeat visit thanks Babu Ji team!

Yes, the food was very good, but quite possibly the worst service experience I've ever had - from start to finish! I'm too mad to go into the details, but I've never rated a restaurant 1/10 before, even when I've had food poisoning ... I hope that tells you something!! We tried to leave TWICE, but we were first lied to by the manager to keep us waiting for a table (at this stage for already over an hour - despite requesting a reservation earlier by phone and witnessing other people being seated before us) and then again by keeping us seated when we were waiting a further hour between entree and main, despite the same dishes being served to other tables who ordered after us. Working in hospitality for years I've never felt the need to write such a bad review. But the rudeness of the staff and management was so shocking it turned quite comical - I was waiting for a TV crew to surprise us that it was all just a terrible hoax!

Ordered the butter chicken and the lamb raan for delivery. Food was very good. Especially the butter chicken. Came within a reasonable time for peak hour (50 mins on a Saturday night). Will definitely be ordering again. Price is the only drawback. $65 for two people. Well worth it though

I'll be the first to admit - the ambience is basic. It's so basic that it may have you second guessing your decision to eat there on a special occasion. This special occasion happened to be my birthday, combined with the fact that my parents are visiting from India.

My fears dissolved after the first bite of the pani puri listed under the from the streets section. Each dish that was brought out fresh hot from the kitchen continued to supersede its predecessor and by the end of the night, we could not stop raving about the place.

Experimental Indian cuisine - simply superb!
Naomi Rheinberger
Mind blown. They are the only words I can use to describe this authentic and truly remarkable restaurant. The staff love, and appreciation of Indian cusine is a true testament to the flavoursome dishes they create. The Pani Puri is a flavour pop that melts in your mouth craving more, the fish curry, I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE FISH CURRY, the Batata weada was almost too beautiful to eat (but I ate it, and smiled with every bite and how lucky I was to be taken to Babu Ji.

Whatever you do, don't go straight for the mains, experiment with the entrees, ask the staff about the flavours and origins and appreciate such a beautiful Indian experience.

Being that I'm an almost 30 year old with braces the night before my appointment Indian food is on my mind..

Went to hit up my local Bala Da Dhaba in Elsternwick and realised like a fool, it is Monday and it's closed.. NOOOOOOO!!

Had heard in whispers that Babu Ji at the end of Grey was scoring goals on the Punjabi front so decided to hit it up..

Sorry my boys in Elsternwick - you'll always be my go to for an Indian on the run but if I'm looking to have a good sit down restaurant meal this is my new hot spot.

I give it a 5 out of 5 pappadums - get it india!

Food was mediocre. The Flavors were not authentic. Everything had too much sugar. Wasted a meal in Melbourne where there are so many better choices

Butter chicken is absolutely delicious. One of the best I've had. Chicken so tender and full of flavour. However, small portion sizes and not the cheapest so I'd wouldn't visit as regularly as I would like.
Naan bread was nice.
Also tried the cauliflower curry which did not really suit my taste. The cauliflower pieces were packed with flavour but the curry sauce was unfortunately not to my liking.

Sophisticated Indian with authentic flavour and a buzzing atmosphere. Whilst it can be noisy, the speedy service meant our food was quick to arrive. A great place to pop in for a delicious feast.

Happy Father's Day!!!
We went to Babu Ji to celebrate Father's Day having been there before and enjoyed our meal but this time it was a terrible experience!
It was an all you can eat menu which was great even though they had increased the cost because it was Father's Day! After being seated i waited 15 minutes before I asked for wine glasses and requested to place our order. After being in the restaurant for an hour and a half we had only received poppadoms! They then gave some of our meal to another table and some items didn't even show. The curries arrived and were tasty so I ordered an additional curry. This time it took another half an hour and when it arrived it had 5 pieces of meat in it and tasted like the chef had dropped a cup of salt in it. The finally part of our meal left a very sour taste in our mouths. I couldn't have spoken highly enough of this restaurant in the past but now I will be warning as many people away from it!!
Munching Melbourne
My go to Indian take out restaurant. Best butter chicken I've ever tasted and the fish curry is a must have. The food is always spot on here. My only request is they really need a cheese naan on the menu...then I'd be in heaven.

Usually when someone includes “food” and “feel good about yourself” in the same sentence they’re talking about kale smoothies, and that’s generally my queue to zone out of the conversation or walk away. However, the team at Opportunity Australia have been brewing up a tasty little campaign that can leave you well fed and happy while also warming the cockles of your heart knowing you’ve contributed to something greater than yourself.
