Review Pelican - St Kilda

Inessa Koreshkova
Love their outside sitting area. Latte was good, but mine was badly presented (like a spit of milk foam on top). Hot chocolate - strange colour and taste. Didn’t know what was in that muffin, neither did staff.

So I came back again with a friend with a rushed schedule to the airport (1752 skybus on Fitzroy Street) and requested to have a rather quick dinner. The lovely owner let us in 20 mins early and started serving us with drinks and food! The risotto was so good we almost licked the plate, the fries were so light and crispy to die for! We had another excellent night here! So accommodating and Thank you so much! I've posted more photos to show how good they are! 😍 Fantastic restaurant with attentive service and extra ordinarily yummy dishes! Everything on the plate is down to the details, tickles your taste buds and also visually stunning. The photos can't justify how good they are! A must try when you go to St. Kilda!

As soon as I tasted the Lemon Meringue cocktail, I was sold! The food on the menu was similarly excellent - the Harissa Chicken was a particular standout - it was a flavour explosion! The chips are also worth a mention. Perhaps I was just craving food after a cocktail (or three) but these were some of the best and crispiest chips I've had!

Love the food! Awesome Staff! Great Location! Took my friends here for a birthday treat and had a great time. Would definitely go again. Those of whom writing negative reviews (especially a paragraph), get a life! I'm sure we've all heard this: if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say it at all. Keep up the great service Pelican!

Cool place for a drink or a meal, with friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Food is good and drinks are cold, reasonable prices as well. Outside seating is perfect to watch the world go by, indoor seating as well. Good happy hour!

Very relaxed atmosphere with good tunes, efficient , friendly service and delicious food! Great portion sizes for the price . Highly recommended

Good food and coffee. We had two burgers and they were both delicious. Reasonably priced too. Staff were very friendly.

Absolutely loved the Espresso Martini - I couldn't stop at one so had 4! Amazing, would highly recommend if you are in the St Kilda area.

Always reliable Pelican . Good flavours , service and price . Value for money . I always seem to return there . Staff are friendly and helpful . Good location .

This beautiful and spacious restaurant is quite easy to miss as it lies on the corner of a busy main street.

Do not actually remember what we exactly ate on a Sunday afternoon but do remember that it was a decent fare. What actually killed the mood to have good food was the wait time. It took almost 1 odd hour to get us our coffees and food. Could be one of the factors that we found food to be decent enough.

Staff is friendly and welcoming, and the food was decently priced.

My partner and I went to Pelican on a Saturday night. As soon as I walked into the place I realised I had made a mistake in booking a table, the place was deserted with the exception on 1 table and the two floor staff. We decided to stick with our booking, bad idea! We ordered 1 starter and 2 mains. When our food arrived the starters and mains came out at the same time. I then realised they had forgot my side order of onion rings, further to this they had served me the wrong hamburger I had ordered. When I raised this issue I was told that the order was repeated back to me and so it was my fault. The food itself was poor. When my onion rings did arrive I realised they were just frozen and tasted like cardboard . Overall experience was very poor and I feel I’m generous in rating it a 2. To be fair when we paid for our meal the waitress deducted my mains and onion rings from the total.

Great place! Recommend it and I would definitely go once again! The food was splendid and the drinks were just as good. I recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Lovely outdoor seating and fantastic food. Very polite and friendly staff! I would definitely go again and strongly recommend this outstanding restaurant.

Loved it. I didn't know what to expect from this place, but was definitely surprised us. It was a group of 6 and everything was just wonderful, from the starters and cocktails to the shared plates and desserts, Pelican was hard to fault.

Had dinner there last night and quite enjoyed it. Reasonably priced with standard pub style food. Pretty keen to check out the brunch menu one day.

They have such a great location and being so close to home they are definitely a top place for people to visit, the food tasted decent although. Cool ideas.

Right in the heart of Fitzroy street in St Kilda, it’s the perfect spot to sit out on their deck and soak up the Melbourne summer. Staff friendly and food nice. Naturally we started with a cocktail. The cocktails were so delicious. The food was also delicious and the staff were extremely friendly.

Staff was very friendly and the food was good. Although the the mojito we ordered wasn't that strong. Liked the rocket salad with the pomegranate the most!

I have been wanting to try Pelicans for the longest time and I can say that I was right to have this bookmarked. The cocktails were so delicious especially the lemon meringue cocktail which I started and ended the night on ! The staff were extremely friendly.

Visited Pelican last week for the first time and was immediately pleased with the location! Right in the midst of the happening area of St Kilda - I can imagine sitting outside and having many cold drinks in the summertime whilst people watching on Fitzroy St! I had the Mojito which was delicious and refreshing. Also tried the Espresso Martini and the Lemon Meringue cocktail and they were amazing. Tried a variety of starters, including the fried chicken wings (amazing!!) and the hommus with bread which was another real highlight for me. The saganaki was also cooked perfectly and I couldn’t get enough. Had the barramundi for main and was very happy with my choice! The veggies that came with it were really nice, and the fish was cooked perfectly with crispy skin. Had a side of the chips with aioli and wowwww these were good - so crunchy!! Keep up the good work Pelican
Melbourne To Mouth
Loved our visit down to the Pelican. Right in the heart of Fitzroy street in St Kilda, it’s the perfect spot to sit out on their deck and soak up the Melbourne summer. Staff are super friendly and attentive, knowing absolutely everything about the menu and offering helpful suggestions.

There are some great brekky classics if you’re there in the morning, smashed avo with all the accompaniments and some pancakes to die for. There at night? There are so many great cocktails to choose from and a huge menu with options for everyone. Eating vegan at the moment, I was stoked to find so many options too! Great risottos, entrees and share plates with great flavour.

With some hearty burgers and steaks too, no-one’s going home hungry. Definitely put this place on your next brekky, lunch or dinner list!

What a treat to visit this place with Melbourne Foodie Hub on a warm night. Located near the beach at the end of Fitzroy street. It is a perfect place to grab a few drinks on a warm night.
Went here the other night for dinner and drinks. Standout for me was the lemon meringue martini! It was seriously the best cocktail I've ever had yum
KnowingMelbourne
I feel like I’ve walked passed this place a million times but I’ve never been in. I visited the other night with the Melbourne Foodie Hub and we were treated with a feast. A series of entrees came out with the highlight being the delicious Saganaki (which had a crisp outside and a sweetness that complimented the salty cheese so well!). The fried chicken was also delicious! I had the Saganaki burger as a main because I was so impressed with the entree! It came on a charcoal bun and the Saganaki was crumbled which added something special. The cocktails are also so so good, with the lemon meringue martini standing out. Thanks guys!!

I had the pleasure of being invited to a blogger event at Pelican in St Kilda. I admit to have wandered passed this well presented restaurant bar in a balmy Sunday afternoon a few months back and the place was packed out so was glad at the opportunity to try a few dishes.

The interior was simple but presentable with a bar area and long dining hall but we chose to eat al fresco in the covered over outdoor area. From here we got to be part of the St Kilda hum.

Naturally I started with a cocktail in this instance picking the Red Snapper. This gin based cocktail was pretty as a picture and a perfect cocktail for someone who doesn’t like their drinks overly sweet.

They gave us a selection of tapas and salads next and I enjoyed the wings, calamari and I even surprised myself by enjoying some of the grain salads, but I absolutely loved the saganaki fried cheese which was a perfect specimen with honey adding a slight sweetness to offset all that great salty goodness.

There were some interesting looking burgers and the barramundi main was well plated and from what I hear a tasty dish. I ordered the steak which came with crispy well seasoned chips and a “wild” mushroom sauce which was yum. The chips were a delight and I could have kept on going with these. I ordered my steak medium rear but came to me more like medium to medium well which wasn’t ideal and I can only assume there was some mixup with the orders in the kitchen given there were around 5 steaks to our group.

We tried a breakfast sample plate and it was very tasty especially the maple pulled pork which was sweet and delicious. This venue lends itself to brunch on a sunny day.
Good Food Good Mood
I dined as a guest at Pelican last night with the Melbourne Foodie Hub. I’ve noticed this place for years as a friend lives right next door to it and I’ve often observed how busy it is of a weekend. The venue lends itself to summery St Kilda dining by virtue of its partially open outdoor area. The interiors themselves though are equally slick. Sitting by the pretty stained glass window, cocktail in hand is a great spot to watch the trams go by and soak up the Melbourne lifestyle.
We tried a variety of tapas including southern fried chicken, calamari, saganaki and my personal favourite the delicious hummus and bread.
For mains I chose the steak (note the menu has been amended slightly from the Zomato listed one) which came with mushroom sauce. For someone who doesn’t like mushrooms I was obsessed with this sauce and asked for another one so I could dip my chips in it (they actually brought me out an extra two which I polished off). Speaking of the chips they were sensational. Some of the best crunchy little potato lovelies I’ve had.
Unfortunately my steak requested rare came out more like medium well. I have a sneaking suspicion someone else in the group may have ended up with mine as five us all ordered the scotch fillet.
The barramundi dish had the most stunning plating though and the burgers looked pretty delightful too. I definitely wouldn’t mind checking out breakfast there as I sampled their smashed avocado and it was so flavoursome. Definitely one of my preferred renditions

Great chilli scrambled eggs, with the smoky baked beans. Coffee terrific! Lucky to get a taster via Scoopon, but would happily return- sooner than later.
Iona Bryning-Macleod
Awful service, the staff didn’t know anything about the food they served.
Were very rude when we mentioned twice that one of our meals was still to come out . (Staff were more focused on eating their own meals whilst we were waiting for ours).
The food itself was okay, pretty overpriced for what it was.
100% not worth the experience, staff have zero interest in serving you.
Throwaprilback
Very disappointing! Requested to change the creme brûlée, and the waitress told me it is the normal format of it. Oh well! The pudding wasn’t even set. Very runny.
Burgers Of Melbourne
Came down to Pelican's with a group of friends and was pleasantly surprised. They have an extensive breakfast menu as well as dinner and of course a few burgers. We opted to get a few dishes and share so we could get a bit of a taste of everything. Eggs Benny was one of the best I have had and knowing the same pulled pork was used on the burger, I knew the burger too would be a treat.

We also enjoyed chili scrambled eggs which came with smashed avo (tick). Panna Cotta (tick) and the bacon steak (tick)
Debbiegray563
Purchased a deal online for dinner. Very pleasantly surprised. We started with entrees of grilled calamari and southern fried chicken, followed by mains of scotch fillet, fish n chips and Moroccan chicken and lastly deserts. We were all very happy with the friendly service and the delicious meals. We look forward to returning, Thankyou

So not fresh menu very boring needs work pork is dry and stale toast is dry not tasty at all the place is always empty it's got a cold feeling to it

Appreciation for its character and endless vintageeeeeee .....

A bit quiet on a Sunday morning .... the venue feels old, however it's an enjoyable "old" venue. This place is just oozing with "vintage" ..... encapsulate you into another era.

I forgotten how comfortable are those humble half-back round PVC swivel chairs to dine on .... man, it brings back a lot of memories.

Food wise, not as vintage, some good old Menu but mostly modernised.
Smoked Ocean Trout, average.
Oak Smoked Bacon Steak is good, however "small" in potion, complemented well with the slaw, beans, issue with the Rosti, but was replaced later.Highlight .... Eggs Benedict was the best out of the bunch, pulled Pork, Hollandaise sauce and the rest, just wholesome.

Coffee are average and Chai (a bit diluted) .... good service and enjoyable venue. JT-22/10/2017.

Good:
Meatballs - tasted amazing!
Ambiance
Friendly Service
Good Wine Selection
Not So Good:
Steak a little too fatty
Narrow selections in mains section

First impression is key & usually determines the course of the evening.. The staff look like they cannot be bothered, as if they do not want to be there.. We were pointed to a table where we waited patiently for a good 15 minutes before I had to wave & caught the a attention of a waitress. They were not even busy!! Overall, the food was not actually bad, bar the crème brulée which tasted like curry. The highlight was probably the liver paté, which was perfectly seasoned & had a beautiful smooth & creamy texture. My steak was overdone but still edible, it wasn't bad but was nothing special either.. Just meh.
The pisco sour should be removed from the menu however, & I wouldn't be game to try any of the other cocktails either.. It was vile!
All in all, there is potential, there is hope but the front of house team needs to be fixed & fixed urgently. It was not a matter of being short staffed, they were just plain inhospitable! Such a shame!!
Pelican had a nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. We enjoyed the panna cotta and the chili scrambled eggs. Thanks for a great breakfast!

Disappointing experience.
Went to Pelican for dinner and we will never go back there again. To start with the service was slow, the waitress was totally disinterested and lacked any enthusiasm and no one seemed to care that we were there. Eventually we ordered and my husband and I both ordered the special- barramundi. When our meals came ( took ages), both our fish were undercooked/ raw in the middle ( not a good thing for white fish). We told the waitress politely and quietly and she took our plates back to the kitchen. Nothing was said to us ( no one came up to apologise) and we had to wait another 30mins (approx) before our plates were returned to us. Our friends had finished their meals by the time ours came. We ate the fish but we both regretted it as we drove home. Both feeling quite queasy and wondering what else was wrong with our meal. Suffice to say- we won't be returning there again to find out that answer.
We should have realised when we walked into an almost empty restaurant at 7.30pm on a Sat night in St Kilda that itself was a sign that people were talking with their feet. We wished we had listened.
Scrumptious GG
I'd have given 4 stars if I had not have burnt bread. Ordered egg benedict and it came to my table a bit cold. Over toasted multigrain bread and dry pulled pork made it hard to chew. If it wasn't for the well poached egg, I don't think I can even eat that. On the other hand, the oak smoked steak was beautifully cooked. The bacon steak was juicy and tender. Perfect! The latte was very nice as well.

We bought a living social voucher that gave us the right to a shared entre, a main e a dessert each. We were not very impressed by the start: we had to wait at least 5 minutes to get menus, we had to ask the waitress to explain how it worked with our vouchers, the entree took more than 30 min to come out, so did the mains. We food itself was good, especially the chicken liver pate. For mains we had the lamb backstrap and the scotch fillet. Both were nice, but my lamb was a bit cold and the steak was covered by parsley, which didn't make much sense. For dessert we picked the sticky date pudding and the creme brulle. Sticky date was fine, but the creme brul

Just ate there and I was extremely disappointed lamb blackstrap was tiny. Charged for a Main and delivered a poor entree size. Ran out of stone and wood beer at 7pm and refused to get more after 9 of us ordered 2 each.
Food was nice but drinks were expensive and ran out.

We have hummus for appetizer. The turkish bread is so nice. We purchased the groupon, it doesn't have a lot of choice for the food. But the food is very nice and service is also very good.
Ana Feliciano
We came here for a Monday brunch. The Food is okay but service is bad, we waited for our food for ages when the place is not even that busy.
Resnel
The food was god but the service was a total let down. We booked for 8 but when we got there the table was only for 6. It was a tight squeeze until one table opened up which was good because then it became comfortable. The chairs were dated. I had mine with black tape on it just to keep it from falling apart. The service was unorganised and the waiters are not trained properly. We had to wait an hour and a half for entree. We had a livingsocial voucher that we redeemed wherein it had a shared entree but since we booked for two vouchers, we would expect the entree to be good for eight too. Sadly, it wasn't even good for one! Now the part wherein we got the bill. We were initially charged with an additional $157 for "extra drinks" and had to argue that we did not have extra drinks and the scotch on the receipt was for scotch fillet which was included in our voucher as our mains. Now, the food was really good. I would have gladly gave an easy 5 for the taste of the food itself but dining is not just about the food, it's the entire experience. The service, the decor, the ambiance all contributed to a lower score.

Came here for the first time, amazing burgers defiantly try the beach and preach burger it was so good. I'll be back soon to try the rest of the menu : >

What a disappointment this place has become.
We have been coming here at least once a week for breakfast over the past 12 months as we live in the area.
Until recently the breakfasts here have been Interesting, well presented and cooked to perfection.
Unfortunately over our last couple visits we have noticed the standards have disappeared, the food presentation is non existent and the only consistent things at the moment are the food been over cooked, cold and a long wait for your order to arrive, even when the place is almost empty.
Lucky for us there are plenty more good options in the area at the moment.

Tony
Went here with some team members from interstate. Love tapas. The food was ok, however nothing to ring home about. We had the mushroom dish, calamari, chicken wings, beetroot salad. Fair to say we had enough
Bec
Very disappointing. Meal took almost an hour to arrive and when it did, the meal was luke warm. The side salad did not arrive until after we finished the main meal. Nice atmosphere, but food very average for premium price.
Stephen Maguire
I don't normally check my receipts however $6 for 1 slice of multigrain toast.. cmon Pelican , that's a joke ... surely that's incorrect....
Andrea
Because mmmm bacon steak isn't a long enough review! I don't know what else to say! What an awesome breakfast. I wish we had found this place on our first morning! The bacon with rosti and vegetable slaw was an awesome start to the morning. Coffee was good and service was great.

Was working in the area and walked in early Saturday morning without knowing where i was.
The main action on fitzroy st is the other side although 50 % of the places are broke
I think the crowd goes to Acland precinct.

Lots if lycra bike guys which i thought was a good sign and i was right.
Nice friendly staff yes i agree it needs updating but nonetheless coffee spot on and i ordered the omelete with parsnip celeriac and ham hock.

Now im def coming back for that dish
Just perfect in so many ways and a little different so glad i was adventurous.
Presentation too amazing it was a shame to cut it.

Well done guys loved it.

This St Kilda institution has lost a lot of its shine. The place looks old and spent with slats falling off the walls, torn chairs and rotting timber underfoot. The food is still really good but could come out a little quicker and the service is flat and slow. A bit of a makeover and a fresh boost in the service department would see this place back up in my south side faves list.

Not many relationships last 10 years, never mind when it’s with a restaurant but Pelican has been a family favourite since we first had brunch there more than 10 years ago but sadly it’s starting to age and this was the first time it didn’t feel a magical as it always had. If anything it just seemed a bit tired, the menus haven’t really changed in that time and the content doesn’t need to – I still order the same things every time but the actual menus, like the furniture, need a bit of an update! Afterall we all need a bit of a spruce up every few years!!
Stephendiageo233
One of my all time favorite places to eat. Food is consistently good. Everything we ordered was full of flavor and delicious. Staff were attentive. Great wine list and after coming here for the last 10 years the mushrooms are still my favorite.
Yvesi
The Pelican is a St Kilda institution. It's a great place for brunch or tapas and drinks. It's also got wonderful alfresco dining with a sheltered deck. They use excellent quality ingredients and the staff are great. I particularly like their gluten free bread which is the best I've tried anywhere. Their housemade relishes are also delicious. For evenings they have a great wine list.
Hungry-Caterpillar
Love the Pelican. Tapas & breakfast always great. Dessert menu is delicious. Nice setting, been several times and will continue to return when in the area.
Kanchana Perera
Had brunch here and is quite a peaceful and chilled place for Fitzroy st. Brekkie was nice albeit a bit pricy. Wait staff were super friendly.
Winnie
Really disappointed. I always had Pelican as a solid St Kilda favourite. I think there must be a change of owner or management and you can tell. The menu is the same but the dishes have changed. No flavour, mushrooms were old and not what they used to serve. Mussels no flavour so much tomato sauce but no seasoning. Calamari was fresh but the dressing on the rocket was wrong, nothing like they used to serve. The old Pelican has gone unfortunately. A shame as this used to be an institution. :(
_raynbow_
Beautiful all round tapas kind of place, great atmosphere and ambience. We sat down and planned to get about seven dishes but the lovely staff warned us that usually 1.5 plates each was sufficient! Whoops. So we ordered between two: Moreton Bay bugs (two bugs halved), lamb meatballs (three mid sized balls), patatas bravas (huge!), and their steamed greens special (big portion). The patatas definitely filled us up, they were fine. Meatballs were kind of average, greens and bugs were delicious! We also got one cocktail and one soft drink which came to about $70 all up. Not bad, 2/2 would revisit to try all the other goodies!

Pelican is on a corner on Fitzroy Street down the bay end of the street. It is a cafe which strikes me as being styled like a pub, it has a very nice outdoor seating area with both benches and tables. I quite often come here as it is one of my parents places they like to hang out due to location and consistency. I have enjoyed myself each time I've come here, it's nice to sit on the side street side and relax with a coffee.

Service has always been prompt and friendly, not the best I've had but we always come quite late in the morning. The Pelican's menu has a nice range of items which would suit most people. This last particular visit we had the hand made crumpets with crab and salad, the yoghurt panacotta and the BLT. The Dr Marty's crumpets are lovely, much denser and substantial than commercially made crumpets from the supermarket. The crab topping was a little dry and underwhelming but still fared as a lovely dish, the salad saved it bringing some moisture and freshness. The yoghurt panacotta was a glass of set natural yoghurt with vanilla flavour and sweet fruit sauce, fresh berries and some granola. This dish was far too sweet for me, I think it's probably best avoiding it unless you are a real breakfast sweet tooth. It was nice but would've been much more balanced with a less sweetened yoghurt and more toppings. The BLT was quite substantial and while being just what you'd expect was very enjoyable. The coffee here is always quite good, far too hot so you really need to let it cool down to get a good level of enjoyment from the flavour.

Not a wow factor but a consistently good meal and in a lovely spot to relax.

OMG this place just rocks. On the corner of Park and Fitzroy Streets, there used to be another restaurant/cafe here, can't remember it but love the look with the wood exteriors.

Another dog friendly place Tick!!

Whilst the girl who greeted us seemed unaware of our booking, on looking at the list found us and placed us outside on Fitzroy Street. Perfect spot, under cover yet open to Fitzroy Street and whilst it was a hot day, the breeze blew in and kept all of us perfectly pleasant!

Should have ordered more of this wonderful tapas as there were 7 of us and I usually over order so I tended to only get one plate of each and wished I'd got less variety but more of each. Anyways had the dips, olives, meatballs (so so), calamari (great), patatas (OMG divine), mushrooms (yumsky), grilled zuccchini with basil (prob my favourite), mussels (disappointing really, a little ho hum tasting, nothing to remember) and pulled lamb which I didn't eat.

Service was superb, not too over the top or lacking. The absolutely highlight was the Pinot Gris, Oceans Eight from winery on the Mornington Peninsula. This was one of the most wonderful wines I've ever had and then when I looked at the cost I could see why, $60 a bottle. Its a small winery and most of its boutique wines sell out early and are not sold in booze stores.

Did I say desserts? Oh more wonderful food, the banoffee pie, chocolate fondant, salted caramel crumble and something else.

A wonderful experience and one I hope to repeat!
Richard Marchandise
The food is nice, patatas bravas are good. It is always nice if you can get a table outside. Staff are friendly, there was a problem with a dish and the manager fixed the problem straight away.
Michelle
We went for lunch with a group of 6.
The food was pretty yummy, great food to share with a group.
The cocktail special wasn't great, but the other drinks seemed fine.
Service was a bit slow, but very friendly.

Overall it was a decent place to have shared food.
Claui
Always reliable, friendly staff, good food, nice spot to hang out. I'm glad the recently changed their menu to have more vegetarian/vegan options as I come here at least once a week!
Nick Haines
This is my favourite morning spot in St Kilda. Great coffee, quick service, dog friendly on the big deck outside and a stream of interesting regulars. Wifi available if you ask nicely, and plenty of interesting, fresh, delicious menu items delivered with a smile.
Nick The Greek
Good for sharing with a group of friends so that you can try a bit of everything. Reasonable prices and good quality. A good choice for a casual night of dining with friends.
Laura
Service was good and the bar has a great selection. The food could defiantly do with either some seasoning or improvement. We had the calamari (worst of the night and won't get again), saganaki, and potato Bravus. The potatoes were the only highlight of the tapas with them being freshly cooked and served with a great aoli. Biggest downside is the good did not come out all together, but 5-10 minutes apart.
Desert wasn't to bad. We went for the tapas again and the apple and rhubarb was nice as was the bantoffy. But nothing super special.
Recommend trying their cocktails of your with friends, but the selection isn't great, most being a type of espresso martini.
The New Fave
With its delicious food, excellent service and convenient location, I was surprised that I hadn't been to, or indeed even heard of, Pelican Restaurant before - but what an exceptional surprise to find such a gem for dinner on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. . Walking into the venue I didn't have the highest expectations - it was cosy enough with its wooden features and dim mood lighting, but there were only a handful of patrons scattered around the restaurant, which is never a good sign on a Saturday night. However, the staff were friendly and appeared to have an excellent grasp on their food and wine list - so it didn't take long for the night to start looking up.
Emily
Love this St Kilda gem! 15 years later and STILL the best croquettes in Melbourne! Nothing beats sitting in the corner table sharing some tapas and a bottle of wine, people watching the colourful st kilda scene!
Sez
Can't stop coming back here.

Only been here for breakfast although it has been sensational every time. Coffee is great, bloody marys are wonderful and the staff are lovely.
S-foodie-d
Nice place to go in st kilda with some friends to enjoy some shared food and wine!
Kefalonica
This place seems to be always busy. I’ve been there a couple of times, but I still don’t know why it’s so popular. Last time I had crumpets with ricotta and ocean trout. The portion was small and it tasted plain. Service was ok.
Trevor Johnston
I have been to pelican a few times for brunch and always enjoy my meal - the environment is cosy, the staff are friendly and the coffee is up to standard. Loved the pork belly breakfast.

Thank goodness some things never change. A St Kilda favorite.. Love the wood inside and out. Great little private-ish tables available if you're quick enough. Alfresco dining and people watching is a treat.
Food is tapas based, tasty but small.
Service is excellent. Friendly, efficient and faultless.
Love the ambiance of this place.
A real winner. Loved by all St Kilda-ites.
Ems
Brilliant in every way!. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, the atmosphere is great, the wine list is extensive with something for everyone and the service rivals that of places like Vue De Monde and Attica...at a quarter of the price. Everytime I have guests to St Kilda, I take them here and have never been disappointed. You'd do yourself a disservice not trying this place!

In an age where we are spoilt with nespresso, my tolerance for subpar coffee is at an all time low. This morning at Pelican St Kilda for the first time in a while, I don't feel like I have wasted money purchasing a coffee when I have a perfectly good George Clooney machine at home. It has a beautiful layer of caramel coloured crema on top & smells of happiness. It tastes fresh. It is strong. It is dark roasted to perfection. Morning made!
Jessica
Whatever my drink of choice is for the day – I can be sure the following St Kilda cafes will deliver!

It's a fantastic place to park yourself for the afternoon while enjoying tapas… our cunning plan exactly.... I do love my lamb – so when I saw these on the menu I just had to have them. And they were good – generous thick and meaty cutlets, they were beautifully tender and juicy. Served with a squeeze of lemon – we were in heaven. I would consider these a bit of a must have on the menu…

Good old Pelican, you can't go past this place for a great breakie, full on brunch, afternoon graze or a slap up dinner! In the long time we have been coming here the staff come and go but the vibe stays constant with the same friendly, easy going, excellent service. No airs and graces, just here to do great coffee, good wine and sensational food.

Pelican - still wonderful and I am still in love! Seriously one of the best spots in Melbourne! Breakfast? Exceptional! Brunch? Fabulous! Afternoon tapas? Sure! Dinner with friends and good wine? Absolutely! You cannot go wrong!

Consistently good service and food - it's been nearly 8 years since I was introduced to Pelican and it is maintains the same levels of brilliance! I am still in love with the Chicken Liver Pate with onion confit after all this time! The menu is great, breakfasts are usual suspects of good eggs and french toast with some wonderful corn fritters from memory but it is the midday onwards Tapas that I love! Stunning! Pile it onto the grilled turkish bread and enjoy the creamy, luscious, velvety wonderfulness! LOVE LOVE LOVE!! But I admit I do cheat on my first love! With the naughty, squeaky, salty cheesey triangle of saganaki - squeeze a little lemon and enjoy the joyous cheese fest, still firm with the bite of a halloumi and cooked to just bubbling point to give it that grilled cheese flavour I love! A generous plate piled high with more grilled turkish bread and a wonderful dish of tzatziki, super fresh, creamy and zingy to cleanse the palate! And then my third love…. the Bulgarian Fet

Excuse the commentary, but seriously?? What in the world of decadent, moorish heaven was that??

St Kilda in Melbourne will present any prospective diner with the conundrum of, "My god, where oh where do I eat?!". The styles, atmospheres, smells, drinks and locations (to beach or not to beach) are seemingly endless. With this amount of choice, you ca

Great date venue. Super attentive service without being too in your face. Food was classic and speedy. Definitely making this place a regular.

A St Kilda icon in hospitality. The format is bistro and the food has been consistently good for over 12 years. The staff are the best you will find in hospitality in the inner city and the wine offering could not be matched anywhere in Melbourne.

Love Pelican. Service is consistently of a high standard. Staff are professional and friendly. Go there often and highly recommend. Very surprised by some reviews on this page as have never had a bad experience.

Great potential, but continues to miss the mark. The set up, location, extensive bar and food menu all complement the positive reviews of this place. What let's it down quite superbly by Melbournian standards is the customer service and the pricing. Unfortunately whilst some service is excellent, other service including telephone, is off-putting to the point that it's not consistent enough to have confidence to recommend. It's always been the same since it opened, which is disappointing.
Prices vary but going by standard egg on toast, $9.50 is unfair for the paltry and unaccompanied serve.
Choose 1 slice gf bread ($1), two tomato halves ($4), and you have a very different experience from other decent looking eateries.
The prices do not reflect overall quality, with cold hand dryers, and lack of condiments, but the venue does look nice.
Again it's the St Kilda and Chapel St-esque place trying to rely on location alone without investing in top quality smiley genuine hospitality service to put customers first.
I'd be keen to go back to see how this venue improves with feedback.

Top Notch.. Great breakfasts and coffee. Friendly, efficient service with a smile. This place will set even the grumpiest customer up for the day. Keep up the great work Team Pelican.

Wow. For such a nondescript looking venue to deliver such outstanding food was completely unexpected. Everything I tried, the chorizo croquettes, the jerk chicken, pulled lamb, chargrilled calamari were all exceptional..... the lamb was especially tasty. Aside from some solid beer selections, the service was friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was pretty chilled and the value was great. The only negative is that I don't live closer.....

What once was.... Ahhh Pelican, we flocked to your tables on many occasions, seeking to sate our tastebuds with the tantalising flavours of the Morton Bay Bugs so delicately cooked, drowning in a delectable garlic and chilli oil. We would order our side of bread so that we may drag it lovingly through the remnants of oil left on the plate after enjoying the sweet and tender meat of the bugs. BUT THEN YOU TOOK IT AWAY! WHY? WHY DID YOU DO IT?
No more oil, just bugs, with some cheese. You ruined it! You ruined us! This relationship could have been a grand and wonderful thing, but you have marred it with your impostor bugs. The trust is gone, the love is gone... we will return no more.

Wank Level- 98. Put some normal breakfast items on the menu. Heard of this new dish? It's called bacon and eggs. Give pork belly and figs a miss- gross.

Eating machine. We stopped at the pelican in St Kilda for some breakfast on Monday morning,
I had the potato hash, baked beans & pork belly and my partner had the chestnut omelet.
Both dishes looked great and where very tasty.
We will be making this a regular stop from now on.

Best coffee and service in St kinda all time. Lived in the area about 6 years, come here regularly and never disappointed once. Super friendly and caring staff, absolutely favourite place!

Love it. My partner and I have been to Pelican a few times for brunch and love it. Both the food and the coffee are consistently yummy. Plus the menu has a nice balance of breakfast basics and more exciting items. We went last weekend and sat outside in the sun and it was marvellous. It was full out there and the staff seem to have a really good rapport with some of the more regular customers which gives the whole place a really friendly vibe.

I just had poached eggs with beans (the housemade beans were beautiful and rich) and my partner had the crumbed tofu which he said was very very tasty. My only qualm, if I had to pick one, is that you only get one piece of toast when you order eggs. I think eggs on toast means two eggs and two pieces of toast, especially when it's such nice bread! But otherwise, delightful.

Im sick of seeing the breakfast chick at the counter who makes the coffee. She us rude, grumpy. They shouldnt put grumpy person in front of house to greet customers.

Consistently Impressive In Every Way. Food 10/10
Atmosphere 10/10
Service 9.9/10

Pelican in St. Kilda has been a favourite of mine for only a couple of years now and no matter where else I go it has held the title strongly. The wait staff know myself and my partner when we walk in now and greet us with the same gracious hospitality that they do for every customer who walks through the trademark, modern rustic, glass and wooden doors. Whether mid week or the weekend rush, the service will be warming and efficient. After being seated and drinks ordered, the friendly staff can teach to you with the wondeful ways of tapas if you have not yet dined that way. I recommend the antipasto combined with 3-4 dishes and a dessert if dining as a couple. The "all of the above" dessert will be perfect for all of you with a sweet tooth or those who like to explore desserts. The impressive bar should not be overlooked with its extensive wine list, boutique beers on special each week/month and the spectacular cocktails that are shaken up. The cosy setting is perfect. Dine inside with the clean industrial setting or outside under the heaters on the deck and alongside the interesting hustle of Fitzroy street. Either way you will be satisfied and relaxed. As a cook i find the food exceptionally creative and consistently moreish. Serving size is great for sharing and still allows for several dishes to be enjoyed during the time spent there. Do yourself a favour and make Pelican the next place you dine out. You may even find yourself going back on a monthly basis like myself.

-The Ginger Beard Chef

Good was average at best, bad coffee, bad service! Typical of Fitzroy street.

Tapas. Nice share platter. Lots of shelter.

I wish i had something good to say about Pelican... so disappointed. Went for Tapas yesterday - tasteless Calamari, luke warm meat balls and oily prawns. Have been here before and its been better. Maybe just an off day, will not be racing back. Staff we good though.

Was there tonight..first date alway nervy but choose Pelican as I've been before and the place just has a great feel to it. Relaxed good wine list and shared plates are always more fun than having food envy coz your friends pick something else. Top night guys date was impressed with my choice :)

I love the place! I don't want to say too much as I go nearly every day but the menu is great and the coffee perfect...the staff used to have bucketloads of attitude now they have friendly amazing international staff and the service is bloody fast and friendly. Its not the kind of restaurant where the staff are told to talk and annoy the patrons, so if your sinking on a bad date, don't expect them to save you....i like their distant ways..pelican is a st kilda institution I love it and have probably spent $10,000 there! Xx

The Pelican Brief. Had a wonderful brunch on Sunday the 20th and have to give credit where it's due. Just love a place when the staff love the place. Our bubbly waitress Kat actually introduced herself and was ever-so helpful in her patient approach to our indecision regarding our choices and in recommending the Save our Souls Chardonnay which was a very honest drop. My partner had the pumpkin fritatta and I the chorizo and prawn omelette. I used to do Sunday brunch @ Circa years ago and Pelican's Brunch is not too far behind. Way in front on reasonable prices and a very vibrant eatery. Not that enthralled by the coffee; far too bitter but I wouldn't shoot the Barista, it had to be the beans. Going back but not for coffee!

I can die after eating here, beyond amazing!

Food was fantastic! Service was meh. Beef cheeks, chorizo, lamb ribs all were delicious, in fact all the food was great. Service was a bit lacking, though we were not the best customers, drinks were slow and a few messed up orders.

Food made up for the average service though and then some! Would return.
