Review Baker D. Chirico - St Kilda

Opens early while no other shop is open. But no seating, when take away, coffee becomes cold. Only sourdough bread, if you want normal bread, not here.

Well, if you want a Melbourne breakfast this is a delight! Outdoor seating on the sidewalk where you can bring your dog or your push bike and consume the most divine sweet pastries. A very busy, popular spot.

I have a love hate with this place. I've been coming here for years. The sweets are amazing and the dark chocolate hot cross buns are the best at easter. The croissants and escargot can be stale or dry if you don't get them the right day and time. Only 2.5 of the staff are amazing lovely humans. The newer ones are usually extremely unfriendly making it uncomfortable to be there. Today I was told I can no longer bring Albert in while I order my food to take away. This happened infront of 6 plus other people. I have a severe anxiety disorder (why I have a dog I bring everywhere) and it was my birthday treat to come in to get a chocolate tart after having a really horrible day. I would have been ok if they had come out and told me privately but this was so embarrassing. Although the girl who told me is one of the good ones, I don't blame her. I know it may seem pety doing this review but nothing I have said is untrue. I stopped getting coffee here because unless the guy is making it they have been burnt and gross. I am sorry I won't be going in here anymore. It became a routine and a nice place to go chat when I was at my lowest. But after that experience I can no longer endorse this as a good local place. Photo attached is a dark chocolate ganache tart. I love these and will miss them. But my waistline won't. Goodbye

If you're in to bakery, this would be the place in St Kilda! Vast choice of pastry and do come early or they might ran out of your fav pastry. Thumbs up!

Excellent coffee, cakes and pastries are to die for!

Oft overlooked amazing coffees pair amazingly well with the pastries and breads that always exceed the expectations you have before entering. While there is room for one or two customers to have their spoils onsite, it's probably best to grab and go. Lots of places to people/nature watch nearby.

I never expect such a bad quality of bakery. I order a croisant and ask if this one was fresh and they assured me it was. However, it was dry, stale and impossible to eat, frankly speaking, the worst croissant I ever ate. I tasted it, went back and asked them again whether it was fresh and they kept lying. I just let the croissant there and left-didn’t even asked for my money back. I would never recommend this place.

Bought their expensive pannetone for Christmas. $48 for a smaller than average size and was extremely disappointed, it was dry and bland and very overpriced. Never again. I thought at that price it would be delicious but those on offer in major supermarkets are far superior and cost a quarter of the price.

Their donuts are something else. I don't think I've had a better classic custard donut anywhere else in Melbourne - ever. It always is good. Always.

Friendly service, great baked goods and good coffee. I tried the plum danish and chocolate brioche. Danish was better choice. Want to go back to try more goodies!

great products but thats where it stops. absolutely awful service. went in to purchase hot x buns and was mer with a rude obnoxious foh staff member. ive never been looked or talked down to by a employee for purchasing 12 hot x buns. It was like i was an inconvenience.

A nice bakery here that offers different types of breads, pastries and coffees. Wanting to splurge a little I thought I'd buy some nice bread, seeded wholemeal sourdough was my choice. I can't remember the price, it was $8 something and it was nice, the bread was a little dense which toasted perfectly. The pastries looked a treat and will have to try some of them next time.

One negative was that the bakery doesn't have a bread slicer, no biggie but I'd prefer to have the bread sliced from the bakery (first world problem I know!)

I have had coffee here in the past which was a miss unfortunately, perhaps just an off day but with so many other coffee shops around I haven't been back to get another one.

If you’re after a sweet treat, then this is the perfect stop. Do not even leave this place without trying a bomolone - citrus custard donut sent from the heavens! Seriously so good.

Came here this morning for a takeaway coffee and a croissant for breakfast. Yum!
The coffee was great! And the croissant was perfect!
At first I thought it looked like it might be dry but it wasn't at all- gorgeous and soft in the middle.
I also got an olive tapenade bread that was new to the menu- I haven't had a chance to eat it yet though as it's for tonight! I will definitely be back, though!

I absolutely love the coffee and would say I'd some of the best in the area but seriously the staff here in st Kilda are the rudest. Final straw todays coffee delivered with no word, smile or eye contact. Money taken with no please or thank you. Time to move on despite the coffee

Fantastic food. But let down by the service. With only 4-5 customers in total sitting inside and onside. The waitress was absent minded, first got our coffee order wrong completely, then gave us the wrong change but said she was confused. Then became argumentative when we asked wheres the coffee we ordered in front of other patrons. She got a bit embarrassed then blamed us for bringing us wrong coffee. Quite stupid argument. If you got it wrong, just acknowledge it and remake the right one. NO! She prefers to accuse the customers so she doesnt look bad in front of other ppl.

One of my favourite bakery. Every single item is delicious! The Danishes and donuts are my staple when I drop by. You really can't go wrong with any sweet or savoury items.
World In A Bite
Really good patisserie & coffee with lovely service... The bread is yummy & crusty 😋.

I had their freshly made egg sandwich with salad & sundried tomato. The bread was really nice. I also tried their brownie which was pretty spesh. Crumbly, melt in your mouth, not too sweet with the right amount of crunch from the walnut. It was a pretty amazing brownie. The only annoying thing about this bakery is, most of their stock is pretty much sold out by noon. So if you were not a morning person like me, good luck!

My favourite local bakery. The bread is as crispy as it needs to be without being too chewy. Worth while making the trip here even if you're not a local

Fruit loaf. So dense, so delicious. Staff are always lovely and can recommend a tasty snack.

Rude staff will never return. I had been going here for years, although the service was always unfriendly. I stopped going because of the rudeness and intolerance of the male Barrista.
The food is alright but not memorable. Would not recommend to anybody. There are plenty of good cafés and bakeries with GOOD SERVICE.

Mouth To Mouth
This place has the triple threat factor: great bread, incredible sweets and interesting savoury bites. For those on the south side, I’m sure your well acquainted and if not, I give you your marching orders to their original shop (149 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda). Great place to start a summer picnic, get in early….
The Bake-a-nista
The second time, I went for the pear tart. And it was as mind-blowing. Both the tarts that I had were so light and crispy... They were simply splendid!

Situated on CrossleySt, near a number of other eclectic little boutiques, the crazy bunny wallpaper didn't even seem that strange. I'd been reading about it all week and finally got the chance to make it there this afternoon to get my hot cross bun fix! Having T in tow was an added bonus (he'd just dropped off a little box from La Belle Miette containing what I would soon discover to be 1/2 doz. hot cross bun-esque macarons - cue shriek at my desk). The shop was lots of fun and I enjoyed looking at the offered products ranging from muesli, fruit jelly, biscuits, candy, and even noughurt. But the main attractions of the store are the glistening hot cross buns and the equally glossy croissants and pastries. Boy do they look glorious! Unfortunately for T, there weren't any gluten-free options available, so he could only imagine the delightful experience of savoring two plump (hot cross) buns. Jokes aside though, I was a bit disappointed to find that the buns did not feel or taste as p

And to make sure the St Kilda trip could extend even when back at home in Kew, some Baker D. Chirico treats made it home with me for afternoon tea. Yum.

I recently read about Baker D Chirico's pop up store and very excitedly headed there for a macaron hit. The macarons at Baker D Chirico had been recommended to me, but unfortunately, being the insular Northsider that I am, I rarely make it over to St Kild

A baked goods bomb has just exploded in Crossley Street. That was my first impression when I stepped inside Baker D Chirico's Alice in Wonderland inspired pop up store, the walls zinging with comets of pastries, cakes and bread against the night sky. The

Great bread poor customer service. My husband a I saw the bakery on SBS show and decided to visit the shop in Carlton. Whilst the bread and other products were great the customer service was poor. I order a spinach slice and asked for it to be heated, it was as though I had asked for the girl to make it. Then when she came back with the slice she said in a loud voice 'where's the woman gone' and run out the store to find me. Funny thing was we had not moved from the counter. She was not impressed that I then wanted to include my husband's order she had to add the amount. All too much trouble!

Disappointed. Tried twice and I'm not going there anymore. Both times croissants were not fresh. Lemon Brûlée Tart tasted weird. Coffee was ok, but you have better coffee in the coffee shops.

Terrible; unfriendly rude service. Lady with the glasses..
What is it about customer service that is so hard to get right? We're not doing you a favour.. Plenty if other great bakeries around..

Simply the best bread in Victoria. Probably the best part of my day is walking here and choosing a loaf that takes my fancy. It's all good.

Carbohydrate goodness!. Love this place! Awesome fresh, delicious bread. Their bombolone is divine! Tried most things on the menu and nothing disappoints. Staff are lovely too. They don't skimp on quality and you get what you pay for. Otherwise there's an IGA close by selling $2 bread loaves if you want quantity

Often go here for lunch as products are great, sandwiches have tasty fillings, Danishes are delicious and coffee is very good. Shame about the consistently unfriendly service.

EASTER BREAK. I have found a bakery that serves decent coffee and the best hotcross bun in my memory, as I am soon to move into the area this is a bakery to savour.

So overpriced! Why?!

Amazing cakes at high price. I love the baked goods here, especially the sweets and they make a fantastic coffee but it ain't cheap. Worth it for the occasional treat! Love the lemon tart but had to overcome my addiction as the price was just too high.

Great Bakery. I go for the bread, but stay for the smoking women that work behind the counter.

Best bread!. Baker D. Chirico's bread has to be the best bread I have EVER tasted!

One of the few truly great bread institutions in Melbourne

Subtle (yet packs a punch). Had five minutes for breakfast this morning and dropped into Baker D. for a beautiful rhubarb tart/Danish/frangipane The grace With this was the superb puff pastry like nothing I've tasted for some time. Also enjoyed a coffee which was a good standard latte as we've come to expect in inner Melbourne. Finally I bought a rye loaf and have enjoyed it for supper tonight with a hard sheep's cheese and sliced green apple. Well worth the five minute drop in.

My boyfriend & I had a coffee and a frangipani & rhubarb tart and a bomboloni (custard donut). Coffee had a nutty flavour - donut and tart were delicious.

As good as San Francisco. San Fran, where we lived before immigrating to Australia, is known for its sourdough bread. D. Chirico could have taken that other City by the Bay by storm, because this St. Kilda joint has such a great range of sourdough products. (Most S.F. places just do white sourdough breads, and they tend to be tough-crusted.) D. Chirico is great at everything they make, including their desserts. The only gripe I have with them is that they sell out too fast. I can't count how many times I went there of an arvo only to find myself shut out from what I wanted to buy. The early bird gets the loaf, mates.
About Last Night
The bakery that stole my heart. Without out a doubt this place is worth crossing town for. The Lemon Brulee Tart has taken me places I have never gone before. The gorgeous fruit loaf is so packed with fruit, it is so heavy, buying this reduces the amount of guilt I feel when I order something sweet.
John Besley
The bread is great, especially the pane do casa, but the highlight is the custard donuts! They are amazing, filled with the best vanilla custard.
Tastybits
Good bakery. Hot cross buns and challah are in. Coffee only so so.
Dani-licious
Go early. My roast beef baguette was delicious though the mustard was runny, dripping onto the plate. Not much of a sweet selection left at 12.30 though the lemon brulee tart was a good runner up to the disappointment of no custard donuts.

I am inlove. Absolutely love this place, if I lived in St Kilda I'd be broke from excessive pastry buying!. The staff are upbeat and friendly, the service is good and I enjoy the quirky clothes the staff wear. Everything is of top quality and the coffee is a two order must. Thank god for BDC, never a disppointing moment here.

One of Melbourne's best bakeries. Daniel Chirico's eponymously named bakery in Fitzroy Street St. Kilda is one of those wonderful bakeries where the delightful breads and delicious pastries are all cooked on site. The smell of fresh bread is so seductive as you go through the door and join the clamoring throng buying up $$$ worth of goodies. If you are in the area drop by for your daily bread or a tasty treat. It's no wonder that Chirico's breads feature on the tables of so many of Melbourne's best restaurants.
