Review Oki2go - St Kilda

Paige Tang
I really enjoy this little Japanese restaurant on Acland Street for my lunch break. The restaurant is very comfortable, cosy, clean, soft music and the staff are so welcoming and hospitable. Refilling your water cup. Meals come with miso soup to start with when you sit down. Food is good. Not outstanding, but very high quality ingredients and love. Curry Veggie Tempura is very crispy. Large meal portions, I usually take away half of it.

Went to Oki2Go for a spontaneous dinner date. We had a lovely experience. The staff is quick and so polite. The food was incredible. We got a sushi/sashimi platter to share and the Una Don. Every bit of it was delicious. Best miso I've ever had. Will come back again!

My bf and I just ate here for the first time and it was *chefs kiss* mwa! I've walked past it plenty and hadn't thought much but inside it has a very calm and beautiful interior vibe and the food was amazing + high quality. We had veg sushi and dumplings, edamame and miso and I enjoyed every bit of it thank you very much. Don't normally review but didn't get a chance to say anything when we left so here I am well done folks

The chicken curry with udon was not the best I've had but the service was great. The food is still good and reasonably priced for Melbourne. I have had the sushi here before and it was also good. Again not the best but still very good for the price. The best part is you can go right to the beach after.

Lovely customer service, fresh food, truly a hidden gem of St Kilda. We used to dine in when we lived in St Kilda and have come back since, the friendly staff still remember us (3 years later!)! Try the fresh spicy tuna rolls and chilli gyoza, also recommend the ramen! Will keep returning every time we visit the city!

Can’t speak for the sushi but the ramen here was horrible. Worst I’ve ever had and they don’t have egg to add either.
Jerry C
Decent sushi and bento boxes. Not the best in St Kilda anymore. They need to check with ACCC on credit card surcharges.

My husband and I love going to oki2go, we've been going there for years. The sashimi platter is fresh and amazing and the salmon steak is sizzling and hot. the waitresses know our names and it's always nice going back.

just now
Worst customer service I have experienced. It is not hard to be friendly to customers. I went in there this afternoon and ordered some hand rolls. I asked if they would be able to cut them for me as I was eating in. the owner who served me was extremely rude. I don’t usually eat here (now I know why) I did enjoy my hand rolls. I went back and ordered more complimenting the rolls. And nothing just rudeness. The other customers dining noticed too.it was embarrassing. I don’t know why these people go into the hospitality industry, maybe they think it’s hostile industry and can be rude to customers. What a disappointment. I recommend people got to Woolworths St Kilda West Fitzroy St they have a Sushi Bar and its quite good and reasonably priced. Keep in mind it’s st kilda and unfortunately we lack good take away Japanese food here.

The meals my friend and I had here were lovely. The sashimi was super fresh and the kimchi was hot to trot. The service throughout our dining experience was pleasant enough. They refilled our water glasses and displayed attentiveness. It’s a laidback kind of restaurant, somewhere you might want to visit for a Sunday night light meal. My only critique for this place is that they would not split the bill at the end of our meals. There was only two of us and we just wanted to split the bill, as simple as that. Aside from a sign saying ‘Eftpos minimum $20’ there was no other indication to patrons that splitting bills is not allowed (I checked the menu book too). After a bit of to and fro with the young lady and after my friend went to the ATM (so we could band our cash together), the owner quickly split the bill without hassle. I would be grateful for this gesture, but I found it bizarre that they wouldn’t let us split a simple invoice. There was no one waiting behind us. The restaurant was near empty. I have used the same Point-Of-Sale system in my 10+ years in hospitality and retail, it’s definitely not a difficult process to chop an invoice in half, for the convenience of paying customers.

Nice and fresh sushi. Lovely staff and helpful.
Very tasty and the spicy salmon is SPICY!
Great taste and texture.
I would’ve have liked to see a little more variety with the nigiri.

3.5

This is my occasional stop over place for a quick dine-in or takeaway lunch in between work. Not the most authentic Japanese cuisine, but it’s a pretty okay-to-go (pun intended) place that does the job of fuelling me for the day.

Honestly, you’re not going find the heartiest ramen broth here and personally I don’t quite fancy bukchoy, carrots and beanshoots in them, but having ingested a couple of bowls of Gyoza Ramen here before, their gyozas are actually quite good.

I once had the Wafu Steak and it was cooked perfectly medium-rare as per request. The teriyaki sauce was sufficiently tasty, bearing a tinge of smokiness from the hot plate. A better coating of it amongst the beef and everything would’ve been more well rounded as there were pieces that were lacking.

Whenever I’m not feeling too peckish, a tray of salmon sashimi always hits the spot and so far I haven’t had a bad one here. My pick of the crop would have to be their Oki Katsu Box as it has my favourite elements all in one - pork katsu, tempura, salmon sashimi and miso soup.

Recently had the Sake Don where the salmon was sadly overcooked and dry, but my side of Ika Fry was nice and crispy without being chewy. Albeit missing the spicy sauce noted in the menu, there’s nothing a little dollop of Kewpie mayo can’t fix.

At the end of the day, I won’t necessarily call this little place the best out there, but its convenience and reliability has served me well.

The food is absolutely amazing, some of the best Japanese food I have ever tasted. Service is quick, however drinks menu is limited. I will be back many times. Great food excellent value 5*
Sushi was delicious and fresh, staff were incredibly friendly. Super quick service, piping hot gyoza was delivered to our table with a smile. No complaints, everything was great! :)

Service is friendly and quick. Not much atmosphere really, but can get pretty busy. Food is pretty good too.
Definitely recommend if you're looking for a relatively cheap feed in the St Kilda area.
Riley
Quick service. Warm, prudent and flexible staff. Well functional with both eating in (except for lack of space/tables but that can't be helped) and take out. Vegetarian-friendly. Hearty food. I personally recommend the Oki Vegetarian Box, Tofu Steak, Veggie Mini Spring Rolls and Vegetarian Gyoza.
Jake Allan Ross
Decent sushi but subpar for the price. Salmon isn't sushi grade (not fatty enough) Pricing is a massive ripoff for what you get. $24 for 16 piece sushi where half of that is the filler cucumber makis.

This place is brilliant, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. If you want to know what good service is go to this place. The food is very tasty, healthy and affordable. Miso Soup is superb as an entree. Great little starter dishes as well. Very filling meals. Will be back soon.

Lovely people that work here. Fantastic sushi. Always fresh. Great place to grab quick takeaway sushi (I am yet to sit in and try a cooked meal)
Anneloes Boer
Best sushi in St Kilda. My partner and i go here at least once a week to eat sushi and it's never disappointing. It always tastes fresh and there is a lot to choose from. Service is quick and friendly!
Charlie Daniels (Curious Charlie)
A quick and easy dinner on the go, typical prices. Not much to say, other than it was fresh and good though a dime-a-dozen kinda place. Card min. $20, so bring cash!
DanieTheSushiLover
True to my name I go on regular sushi hunts to find the best, freshest sushi around. And I think I've found it here at this quaint little shop in St Kilda. The service is fast and attentive, the atmosphere warm and bustling. Furthermore the sushi making process is one of care and love. These sushis are also bigger than the everyday ones you can get from other places. You definitely won't get cheated with the fillings too! Soft perfectly flavoured rice surrounds a generous helping of salmon, chicken or prawn.

Have you ever heard the saying "make the transaction as simple for the customer" $20 minimum charge is ridiculous for eftpos. If you can't afford the fees associated with using todays technology dont use it at all. The audacity and obnoxious tone to suggest why dont i just buy a drink!
Julian
Had a vegetarian bento box from here the other night. It was prepared quickly, and even though the driver took ages to come it was still hot. The agedashi tofu component was crispy and great, and the vegetable tempura was as good as stuff I've had at sit down restaurants. I usually find decent delivery Japanese food difficult to find, but this place was surprisingly good, worth checking out.

I don't know if we just caught them on a bad day (New Years Day) - but this was quite possibly the worst Japanese food we'd ever had anywhere (in the world). I'd even be upset if we were given something this bad at a local suburban shopping center food court.

For entree's we had the Prawn Tempura and gyoza's. The tempura was way overcooked - the batter had this overpowering burnt taste and the prawns tasted like they'd come from the frozen section somewhere. The gyoza's didn't fare much better - basically a mush of ingredients and oil.

For the mains we had a Chicken Teriyaki which actually wasn't terrible - so the 1.5 stars are for that. The Beef Wafu on the other hand was a disaster. We'd told them medium-well when asked how we wanted it - what was actually served up beef that was thoroughly burnt on the outside (large black charcoal bits coating it) and almost totally rare in the middle. The super tough burnt exterior was so hard to chew through we had to ask for a knife to cut it up into smaller pieces.

Then to top it off - when we went up to pay we were told a unusually high amount. I asked to check the bill and found out we'd been charged an extra ~$15 for a steamed vegetable dish we'd not ordered (nor received).

I'm really puzzled as to how this place has received such high reviews - perhaps we just went on a day where all their regular cooks had taken a sickie + they had stand ins. Nonetheless I don't think we'll give them a second attempt.

We ordered takeaway katsu don on a cold rainy Saturday night. The guys got the order wrong but quickly made up for it. Food was delicious. Authentic or not? I can't care less...it was good. Miso soup was good as well. Definitely will come back whenever I feel like some Japanese flavour from around the corner.

Pretty expensive for a standard bento box. Small restaurant and menu. Limited seats. Service was good. Good for food on the go. Much better food alternatives in St.Kilda though.
Suburb Review
Great entrees and light meals here, we had gyoza which is a must have so hot and juicy, chicken karage, beef tataki and sashima. Unsure if its autentic japan3se but its quite light and tasty, It now offers BYO (WINE ONLY)
Custard Queen
Highly recommend dining in here over the takeaway. The freshly cooked meals have attention to detail and delicious savoury flavours as good Japanese food does. Unfortunately this doesn't translate to take away, the takeaway nori rolls I've had were bland on the fillings and the meals don't travel well, but I'm definitely a fan of eating in here. Also the waiter service is great Japanese attention to detail service ❤️
Bailiefloyd
Ok sushi but they need to mix it up a bit more and defiantly start doing brown rice, ok if you hungry and need something quick on the go but many other places I'd rather go ...
The value for money isn't to bad as you do yet ginger, wasabi and soy for no extra cost. The salmon is fresh but after all day if sitting there it can get quiet chewi especially the nori. Not bad bur to great X

Sushi, sashimi, ramen, bento! Yum! All sort of Japanese food you could find in this tiny restaurant. Fresh and tasty. The services from the owner and staffs were fantastic too.
Monkey King
Went there for quick lunch, huge variety with reasonable price. Ordered the miso eggplant and ramen. Yum Yum. The boss was very friendly, great service from the staff too.
Gemma Hudson
Great food, reasonable priced, perfect for a casual mid week healthy meal, great location to people watch. Customer Service could be improved though.
Maximus
Been going here for years and the prices have gone up and portions down. Recently paid $13 for a bowl of fried rice and I got the amount you'd expect in a Michelin star restaurant. So I called a waiter and mentioned it. She said she'd tell the chef. After 10 minutes no response . So I said again. The waiter then proceeded to say that my son had grown so he changed the portion because he should eat less. I said it it was regardless of my son. The waiter was laughing at me and said that I could have a bowl of steamed rice if I was hungry. I am not coming here ever again. This is not the way to treat loyal customers by laughing in their faces and making fun of them and not to say halving their portions.
Signor-Gastronomico
Went here once and got a bento box, the bento boxes and food are pretty good, but too expensive compared to other Japanese gems in the CBD. I lost faith in this eatery when after my family had ordered two bento boxes, though in mine I received NOT EVEN ONE GOYZA. The idiotic and unsubstantiated response involved the "waitress" saying "oh, GOYZA was in other bento, so you get fried spring rolls instead". Need I say more? When I pay more than $15 for a box with no goyza when it specifically says goyza to be with it, on the premise that "we ordered one bento already" is crap. (Maybe a method of keeping cost down- in any case, not acceptable). Poor and deceiving service albeit the food is actually good. Great shame, won't be returning ever again.

My Friend raved about this restaurant - and with good reason! Oki2Go would have to be one of the best places in Melbourne to get delicious, fresh and reasonably priced sushi. Have had sushi both in the restaurant and also takeaway - both tasty.
Linda Norman
Staff friendly however main courses were overpriced given the small portions. Nothing remarkable about the food, but it came quickly. It was kid friendly and had simple dishes that children could eat with no trouble.
SB91
Menu items are nothing special, definitely won't be ordering hot dishes from here again, but the sushi is decent for a quick bite on the go.
Matt
Took the family of four to eat on a quiet (and bloody cold) Sunday night. Short story, it's reasonable. Long story is that you will find decent food and a reasonable price but you will have to pick the right dishes to get excited. We ordered four of them and the pick of the bunch is the Sukiyaki Don- full of flavour. The service is fine, perhaps the owner is bit a bruff but the other staff are relaxed -always remember Japanese outlets tend to be fairly efficient and cod with regards to service, i.e, they don;t engage in chit chat. The place is small but there is outside tables as well. We were pretty full at the end and it didn't cost too much even though you can eat cheaper elsewhere.

Drove down from Sydney to Melbourne Friday night July 10th. Paid an outrageous $38.00 for a thirty piece sushi and sashimi platter - the food was deplorable, it was neither fresh made, nor was it edible. My wif and I eat Sushi in California USA, Toronto Canada, and in Sydney NSW. This sub serviced food wasn't fit for a dog. One would be better served on their taste buds by buying day old sushi from Coles or Woolies, truly garbage. Nothing worse than paying for supposed fresh cut and prepped food that is day old. complete rip off. My wife and I would have asked for our money back, but didn't want to embarrass people eating their dinner. My advice to potential customers, if you're food is ready in under five minutes - leave and go else where!!
Derek McDonald derekthomasmacdonald at yahoo dot com dot au

We came here when we were really hungry and want a quick bite before dinner with some other friends. The staff are bit pushy and between them they keep yelling in to each other while they taking order. Not a great experience at all. We decided to get some sushi roll for take away . The salmon teriyaki sushi turn out to be good, the filling is tasty and thick. The prawn tempura was very dry and the rice was rubbery. Will not coming back.

Love this place for sushi. Great quality, great value. Always fresh. Very Casual. You won't find better for takeaway or a quick bite.
Always reliable.

Excellent food, excellent service.

Cafe style japanese done well. People tend to confuse the idea that all Japanese restaurants and people only eat high end, meticulously stylised food. Ok2go is more home style than this, owned by very lovely people. The small staff work hard to ensure the food is served promptly. The food is simple, tasty and unpretentious. Being a customer for years this place serves our needs for an affordable, and very yummy homely style Japanese food experience. Prawn Tempura soup and Beef Ramen rock!
Jeanegg
Pretty good food at affordable prices! The bento box was great value.
Emtay89
Great burgers. Amazing burgers and fantastic chips as well as lovely service from the girls in the shop. I'll definitely be going back!
Kate
Reasonable local Japanese food but not a special occassion venue. The food was fine although a little on the expensive side. Delicious miso soup but the gyoza were pretty disappointing.
Danielle Wilson
Wouldn't go back... Wasn't terrible good but certainly not worth coming back for. We had a katsu don (very dry) and the katsu ramen , this ramen soup had carrots and bok choi to accompany the noodles, which I found to be quite dismal/disappointing.
Little_steps
Ilan. The food is amazing and also has a beautiful texture

A terrible waste!. I used to love oki2go, it used to have quality food at reasonable prices, but those days are far gone. Tonight my boyfriend and I ordered a bento box and a vegetarian ramen and both were terrible. My ramen noodle soup had all of 3 vegetables in it, a carrot, broccoli and some cabbage. The soup tasted as if they opened a sachet of 2 minute noodle favouring and poured it in. The beef bento box was all different kinds of sad brown so called meat with a side of rice, thats it. So disappointing, such a waste and Im still hungry.

I think a couple of the negative reviews for Oki2Go are fakes, especially the one that references a $250 bill! How would it be possible to rack up a bill like that at this very cheaply priced place? Impossible! I eat here at least once a week. This is a great little local with reliably good quality simple fare. I have never found the staff to be anything less than helpful and efficient and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys simple Japanese.
Katherine Palicki
Bad customer service. Couldn't get a spare chair for my boyfriend to sit on despite him being on crutches. Owner doesn't seem to know what 'customer service' means, or even basic human heart.
Melzahr
Very poor quality food & service & the fact that there not Japanese & said they are!! Just to get them few bucks, very unsatisfied with the food after paying 250!! I advice everyone that thinks of coming here too walk straight out it's not worthy of a dollar!
Danielle Adia
Good prices great sushi but surprisingly judgmental wait staff!
Ali
AVOID. I have recently visited this restaurant and was very disappointed. Not only were we ignored and forced to find our own seats but we received this poor standard of customer service throughout. Finally, when we were served only ONE of the TWO bento boxes we ordered, I was disgusted by the poor quality. It was the worst bento box I have seen in my entire life, Stewed, overcooked chicken and beef with questionable sauces, raw vegetables, unidentifiable blobs of sloppy pastry, rice that can only be described as glue and NO WASABI. I am almost thankful the second bento did not arrive. When going to question the staff on the non arrival of the second meal, they made little effort to fix the problem, causing us to walk out, annoyed at having paid $15.80 for a box of crap.
Esther Williams
My favourite St Kilda sushi place. I've never eaten in, only ever got their takeaway sushi rolls and sushi/sashimi packs but I've always been happy with the quality.
Matt Burnet
Some of the best Japanese food I've had in Melbourne. Great service. Loved it.
BAL
Great for lunch. We have miso, sushi and tempura prawns. All fresh, you can see the chef making it. Quick service friendly staff and good takeaway if you are in a hurry.

Will not go back.... I am rather furious at this restaurant. In the past when we have ordered they have forgotten parts of our order and we have called and had to go all the way back to collect as it's out of our area. This is really frustrating when you have kids waiting for dinner. This evening i ordered salmon teriyaki over the phone as a main course with a katsu curry and other bits and pieces. When we got home we realised that all our main orders came without rice. As this had happened in the past, I called back as we had done in the past and was told that none of the mains come with rice ($20 a main meal) but i could have rice if i went all the way back and paid an extra $2. i find this completely unacceptable. $20 for a stingy piece of salmon and no rice for what they bill as a 'main meal'. We have supported them in the past out of some misplaced loyalty but will not be going through those doors again.
Foodie71
Service WITHOUT a smile. We were made to feel very unwelcome and the kids were frowned upon. Won't be returning due to such poor customer service.
Mike
Rudeness!!!!. OMG!!! After 3 years going here, went in there for dinner at 9.30pm and asked if they where still serving food, they said yes but we are closing soon and can you sit outside! So my girlfriend and I do, we order and begin to eat.

3/4 through the meal while my girlfriend was actually eating her food the waiter went to take the food away from her!!!!! Omg, so we say sorry we are still eating. 5 seconds later he comes back with the bill saying "we are closing now"!!!! We say but we are not finished and we still have 3/4 of our drinks left!!
He says "but we are closing" So I said well then we are happy to pay for the food as we have almost finished but the drinks are not even close so we will leave and take the drinks off the bill please!
He then starts swearing F#$k you etc we are closing and takes the drinks away and pours them on the foot path in a rage!!!!! Omg. So we pay for the food. he then starts smashing the furniture around us and the closes the umbrella on my head!!!! The owner/manager sees this, Thankfully he seemed to care a little(I think) I tell him about what happened doesn't seem to care and the young waiter again starts to swear at me in front of the owner!!!
I was nice the whole time wasn't drunk etc etc!!!

Never ever will i go here again and highly recommend nobody does also, the worst experience I have ever had anyway.
Stace Bianca Lenthall
You get what you pay for I guess but in saying that there is a certain way to speak to your customers. I just purchased a rainbow roll pack, was spoken to so rudely. When I asked for an extra soy sauce I was told I had to pay despite only having one in the 8 pack which is very unusual even for oki2go. I do love the rainbow pack but it would be nice to be treated with a smile rather snapped at and eye rolled!
Peter Hong
Greatest Little Japanese Restaurant. When I was first experienced Japanese food I thought "Meh". But as soon as I stumbled along this small restaurant, I saw it was more than the usual sushi bars you see in shopping market. It had a sushi bar for those people who just wanted a sushi and a kitchen for those who wanted more.

The sushi was delicious, and had a huge variety of flavors. The dishes they served were well presented and tasted just perfect. The waiters and waitress were friendly and attentive. The decorations of the inside were absolutely beautiful and set the mood quite nicely

I will certainly be coming here again and again.
Icarus
No fresh no clean. Did somebody say prepackaged frozen sashimi - this isn't a sushi restaurant, to clear that up, its a glorified snack bar pretending to be japanese - might as well scream STAY AWAY FROM ME, I CHARGE LOTS. btw a machine rolls their sushi, haha.
KP
Never lets us down. Oki2go is one of the few reliable places on Acland Street that will guarantee a fresh, tasty, fairly priced meal. We live nearby and have been going to Oki2go on average twice a month for maybe 3 or 4 years. It has never let us down. We usually sit down and have a cooked meal rather than order their take away hand rolls. Their handful of tables are usually all occupied and for good reason. We love Oki2go and when we're craving a simple, delicious Japanese meal with clean, true flavours, we're always grateful that it delivers every time.

Not worth to go.... This is not even proper restaurant.. normal take away sushi.....
Lbaker
Great Japanese. Took a friend and family to Oki2go on Saturday night for what was a great meal, friendly service and we were in and out without much fuss. Food arrived in a timely manner. Food as usual, was just suburb..
Brekky-lover
Sadly disappointed with our visit here, went for a vegetarian bento box and the salmon steak in teriyaki sauce and even though the salmon tasted as expected the bento box really let us down, its lack of flavor just made it bland and boring. Service was nice but won't make me hurry back anytime soon.
EmmaD
Went for dinner - wasn't sure what to expect as it appeared to be more of a takeaway sushi place, but it was great! Fantastic food. Had the chicken Dumplings, wafu steak and calamari. Busy and quite small but had a good feeling about it. Really enjoyed.
Shui
I had the sushi and sashimi and was very satisfied with the freshness. It came with a complimentary side of pickled vegetables. Friendly and attentive service.
Andrew Kelly
Went here based on the high % and was not disappointed. Oki is mainly a sushi takeaway outlet however has a few sit down tables with a decent menu covering Bento box and Don dishes. I ordered a bento box and it was good. Well balanced flavours with the different elements presented well. The miso soup was also delightful.
Sirlunchalot
Great little Japanese gem. Had lunch here today usually get my asian fix next door but was more than happy with my change of venue. Friendly service and good fresh food. Little more expensive than kotraya but still very good value for money. I will be back. recommend!
The Hungry Scorpio
Fresh and fast. This is what all take away should be about. The freshest ingredients producing the tastiest food. Oki2go has friendly service, reasonable prices and a menu to please everyone. Their bentos are great and their miso is warming and nurturing after a cold commute from work. Their sushi and sashimi is always fresh, the unagi is melt in the mouth and will bring you back again and again. Kids love the gyoza and ive never left this place disappointed or hungry.
Moose
Sushi & sashimi plater was very fresh with big pieces of fish. Great value for money. Place was recommended to us by some friends and we love it.

The food is spectacular, you must try it and the service is a cut above too. Been here a couple of times and will keep coming back.

Great Bento. Seriously one of the best bento boxes ive had in melbourne, highly recommend!!!

My friend really likes Oki2Go. She described it to me as the best Japanese restaurant. Ok, maybe I am a snob but I really didn't think it was that good. There is always the problem of raising expectation too high only to be disappointed, and that is what happened. Don't get me wrong. Oki2Go is not terrible. But comparing it to somewhere like Aoba, it's just not up to scratch. The service was pleasant. The staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered greens with mushrooms to share, fried rice (which is the favourite dish of my friend, not me), then for main I had tofu bento while she had tofu steak. The greens were a little too oily, but fresh. The bento box was well done with several different flavours. The tofu was firm rather than silken. The predominantly radish salad seemed very healthy, and the tempura had a long carrot half with the usual staple tempura veggies. Whilst the fried rice had a pleasant wok flavour, I am not a fan of this dish (always associating it with leftovers). Th
