Review Hide And Cheek - St Kilda

Ryan H
An amazing local Cafe that serves top notch coffee and foods, despite affordable pricing. The staff are super friendly, down-to-earth and prompt with the service. The ambience is also great with the big windows for some natural lights. Highly recommended.

The brunch here was phenomenal, one of the best I've had in melbourne. The morning breakfast burger was amazing, absolutely have to order this if you come here. Good price points, amazing owners, fantastic coffee, cosy environment. 10/10.

Small town local cafe with good eats. Ordered the fried chicken burger with generous fillings and a side of chips as well as an eggs Benny. Delicious.
Timur
Cafe gives preferences to take away orders. Came for a breakfast on Saturday to dine in. Despite only 2 other customers inside was waiting for 15min for coffee and 45min for eggs with bacon. Food is alright, but if you want to visit this place plan your time accordingly, best to not visit if hungry

By far the best Cafe in Melbourne!! The food is excellent and the customer service is impeccable. Great place to take dogs and the family. I highly recommend this place. You won't regret it

Love this local cafe, the most amazing fried chicken burger (Korean style) and great coffee. Always lovely service. Definitely check this place out and support your local cafe.

The breakfast. Oh Lord the breakfast. It is incredible and worth every penny. I love to cook but the quality here far exceeds my culinary capabilities. I would get breakfast here every day if I could.

First time I went to H&C I was desperately looking for a place to eat real quick with a friend. If someone told me that I was about to have the best cappuccino in melbourne I wouldn't believe it. Going back on a weekly base and I totally love it. Coffee is superb, food is OMG, staff really cares about customers and it's great to see everyone leaving with a smile on their face. This is totally my favorite place in Melbourne. #TotallyInLoveWithHideAndCheek Ps: Chicken Cheese Melt is something worth spending money on.

It's hidden in the corner of inkerman & market street but stumbling across this little cafe is a charming coincidence you'll want to make a regular thing. A rarity these days serving consistently quality & good value food & coffee. Friendly genuine service & unpretentious vibes - the kind of cafe you can roll into and stay as long as you like. This is the kind of cafe that is authentically St. Kilda. So many options, always accommodating & honestly best breakkie wrap in town makes for the best take away breakfast!

Excellent coffee, excellent food, amazing service. I've ordered from here a few times, but it was how Hide and Cheek reacted when we had a bad experience (through general St Kilda delivery issues) that I've found fantastic. The customer experience has been excellent, even though the original issue was a shame, how they responded since has really turned the experience around. Recommend Los Tres Amigos and the Pear smoothie - won't disappoint.

Amazing vibe, friendly staff and incredible food. What more could you ask for!

Great atmosphere and very welcoming. The service is great, friendly and attentive. The food is delicious especially The Mermaid and the breaky wrap when I'm on the go. I've been back a number of times for writing sessions and it's the same beautiful experience. It's my go to cafe in St Kilda.

Real rating 4.25 āļø

It was our first time visiting Hide & Cheek and it was such a delightful experience! Letā€™s get started on what we thought!

Nutty granola - filled with vanilla bean yoghurt, apple rhubarb, strawberry & berry compote, this bowl was such a refresher as all the elements mixed together had given it such a wonderful flavor! The sweetness of the granola was offset with the sourness of the yoghurt, rhubarb and compote! The best part was the healthiness and deliciousness of this dish! šŸ˜‹

Nutella pancakes - as my sweet tooth saw this, I had to order it! I can confirm this was not a disappointment as the sweetness of the pancakes complemented the sourness of the macerated berries which I thought was a smart idea - this would cater to everyoneā€™s tastebuds making it my favorite dish of the day! ā¤ļø

Poke bowl - this was an interesting one as we were told the this bowl had a bit of Japanese influence mixed into it! The edamame beans, brown rice, cured salmon (beautiful rose shaped), chickpeas, avocado, seaweed salad and ponzu dressing made this dish into a beautiful and delicious artwork! I loved the idea of using an avocado as a bowl to store the ponzu dressing which can then be spread around the dish thought it was a little salty towards the end.

A special mention needs to be made on their smoothies as well which were very fresh and delicious to drink!

Overall, we had a pleasurable time and would love to experience their hospitality again! šŸ‘

I went to this nice place back in August 2017. The place is amazing, the food is so good and the staff were friendly. I had that delicious mermaid, a perfect combination of omelette and tuna. So good! Will definitely come back again to this place, hopefully soon ;)

Didnā€™t even know this place existed until I walked past it the other month! Ended up going for breakfast a few weeks later and it was soo yummy! So many great options as well as your standard breakfast dishes. I had the vegan tofu scramble, the flavours so vibrant and fresh! Service was very friendly and quick. I ordered a soy chai latte but they brought out a soy latte instead. When I explained I asked for a chai latte as I canā€™t have caffeine they were so apologetic and quickly made me a chai latte. Will be back!

Had to drop my boss' car off at Inkerman Panels up the road and stumbled across this cute little corner shop cafe and was instantly drawn in (what is it about corner cafes and their magnetic fields) .Ā

Staff seemed really cool- the kind of cool that instantly makes you feel like quitting your job and joining a Ā band.Ā
More to the point- my coffee was delicious!

Was a quick stop in and I don't live around the area so if anyone needs a car dropped off at Inkerman Panels, let me know ;)

j.a.s

Good atmosphere for a relaxed breakfast. Good selection of options for vegi/vegans. Feta on the 'clean and green' breakfast looked and tasted more like cream cheese though, which was odd.
Alex
A great little gem for catching up over coffee! Stumbled across this amazing cafe while out with a friend - the experience was sublime! & il not just talking about my friend. The layout has definitely captured the layer back St Kilda vibe, just adding to the experience.
Yet to try the food however - but we will be back!

Looking for really ...really good consistent coffee well look no further.. Great friendly staff and the food is incredible. Not only in-house I have had the (Antonio Banderas ) eggs avo feta etc yum! Had the egg and bacon wrap a few times "on the run" a great breakfast on the go...! Also the catering menu for our work function arancini, mini burgers and antipasto platter. All excellent quality. Over all there is nothing but praise here. Well done ***** šŸ˜ƒšŸ‘

I don't do reviews on cafe's as i not a reviewer , like most the people who right reviews on this site. Most are just angry little . Came to Hide and Cheek two years ago. Love the place. Great tunes. Great staff and fantastic food. Love it.

Stunning place for coffee, a juice and breakfast. My Vegan daughter loves it too.
Highly recommend it. Amazing friendly staff a cafe that gets it right consistently

Hmmm what to write? My brunch was alright, quite average... The decoration is funky.

This is one of the best cafe's in St Kilda. I work in the area and have eaten here consistently for the last 4 years. Never had a bad meal. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The chef's recommendations board is always new and has some really tasty options. Their fresh juices are great, coffee is great and I would recommend this place to anyone. Also had them do some catering for a conference and everyone was delighted with what was served. Super healthy, fresh and tasty food.

Suprising little cafe!

I have eaten here a few times now and am definitely converted. Being gluten intolerant I am always on the lookout for cafes that cater to my needs (By that I mean more than 1 option on the menu). This place is perfect, they have a generously stocked front cabinet full of gluten free treats and savory options too. There is always so much variety and something to please anyone I dine here with. The menu is extensive and their home baked gluten free bread is AMAZING! They also have buckwheat gf pancakes with berries and maple as a menu regular (big stack that's very light and fluffy) There is always something on the specials board that takes my eye and the staff are friendly and attentive. Drinks list has a good offering with a good list of juice combinations. Their chai latte is the best I've had and I can't wait to go back for the spiced hot chocolate. NOM!

Iā€™ve been there several times. I love their food. Itā€™s quite original and nice. But, Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™m going back. Maybe I was justĀ unlucky, but I often ended up eating smelling their cleaning product. I wonder if they really need to start mopping the floor at two when there are peopleĀ still eating.
Stevie Sparkles
Meh. The food is average at best and the coffee tastes like it was brought at McDonald's. Honestly I went there on my way home from work and took my order take away. When I got home and tasted it I immediately remembered why I vowed not to go back there and I threw both my food and coffee out! What a waste of money. The girls aren't at all friendly or welcoming in the slightest, they hardly speak to you and you shouldn't expect a smile either. Usually hospitality staff are bubbly and have personality.....not at this place. Boring. The polite chefs however provide a smile and great customer service perhaps they should cover the counter also. I work and live a block away so it's disappointing my closest local is just 'meh'
James Kara
Left before I ordered. Had been there 6 months ago and it was great. But a month ago the customer service was terrible. Was waiting 15 minutes before given a menu! I approached the counter and was told they wouldn't let me order a coffee unless I was seated. All this arrogance was from a female member in her late 30s whos on the heavy side working sunday. Managment need to do something about her.
Sarah
Rude staff with a wait of 20 minutes to revive menus? With attitude like this the place won't be around much longer
Emma
Eaten here multiple times- take away and dined in. Consistent quality. Good variety of food available with friendly staff and good coffee.
Natalie Portmenteau
Hide and Cheek is a great little neighbourhood place with a relaxed vibe. The coffee is not the most fantastic ever but the food was delicious. I don't know what the other recent reviewer is complaining about re: the size of the Antonio Banderas - I thought it was pretty substantial and a great mix of flavours. Service was friendly and it's great to sit in the window as the sun streams in on a cool morning.
GirlWhoEats
Pricey for what you receive.. Perhaps it's just me or I caught these guys on an off day.

Service seemed ambivalent from the two female waiters. Barista was the only one who seemed to want to be there. I ordered the Banderas. Small serving - ingredients piled onto one average sized piece of toast. Personally didn't feel it was value for money (taste-wise, ambience, service received etc) - especially considering the competition in the nearby streets.

Probably won't be back.
Would recommend trotting down the road to Inkr7, Woodfrog Bakery or Harper's if you're after a feed.

Hidden secret. I travel the world with work and happened to pass by. I'm glad I walked in and spent several days there for breakfast and coffee. The staff are warm and inviting, you feel very welcome, and you will enjoy your time with James, Heidi and the staff. Make a point of stopping by for the superb coffee and food. If you don't you should feel some regret!

Great food! Great service. Staff were very friendly. Had an Antonio bandera and it was great. Coffee was delicious
Frog
Unassuming quality. Very unassuming place, Hide & Cheek is a real pleasure any time of day. Not too busy in the morning with always a newspaper available, the coffees are excellent and the menu is on par.
The cheeky food item names hide wonderful offerings. The ā€œmermaidā€ is a fluffy egg white omelette with spinach and lightly cured salmon, a dream for the gluten intolerant. I prefer the ā€œEdith Piafā€, the best French toasts I've ever had: the grilled bananas in maple syrup combined perfectly (I also swap with honey and drop the ice cream for extra banana). The lunch menu is also very good (I love their curry), and overall value is outstanding.

I found the menu and unpretentious brunch crowd refreshing at Hide and Cheek. Food & portion was for value, and no BS wait/line up to be seated that you would find amongst many other 'hipster' brunch spots in and around Melbourne ! Although reading the last user reviews I had dined the same day and had the same grumpy blonde hair waitress...however the friendly barista was the saving grace.
Lucas Ozi
Service is a Bleach. I'll keep it short - as I don't want to dwell on the experience.
Good coffee & reasonably tasty food are vastly overshadowed by the unwelcoming, curt & verging-on-the-hostile behaviour of the bleached haired waitress.
Being urged to order coffee & food at the same time, then being served with the food after one sip of coffee? not nice.
Getting kicked out because of some alleged reserved table (when the rest of the place is nearly empty)? unacceptable.

Oh, and the portions are really small too.
Miss Piggy
Read all those glorifying reviews and visited today. Nice coffee and okay food, but unforgivable attitude. Apathetic service, an unripened lemon would have been sweeter than our waitress's face (the blonde one). We all had breakfasts and were requested to leave once finished as "this table is booked for 12pm so you have 5 more minutes". Needless to say the place was not packed at all. Will never be back again.
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Not bad. They forgot my coffee but did apologise. Had the chicken 'rotji'? I think? It was really delicious!

Another Melbourne Gem .... There's brekky and there's brekky ... I certainly have had my share in Melbourne, all over Australia the last 30+ years. This has to be rated at amongst the top few! Great selections of various combinations, the old and the new and adventurous! I had the very traditional sunnyside-up fried eggs, buttered mushrooms, bacon, sour dough toast, while my partner had the very sexy "Antonio Banderas" (poached eggs with a tangy, spicy avocado salsa, on a slice of toasted sour dough). Everything was expertly cooked to perfection and beautifully presented ... and the BIG test, the coffee ... yep! THAT got all the ticks too! Extremely friendly and efficient service by the barista ... can't be said for the rather abrupt and grumpy waitress who served us! SUNDAY 25-Aug-2013

One of the best coffees I've had in Melbourne. Great food and service too, and that's why I've been telling my friends to try this place since I've been there. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

Good coffee, good food, great vibe. First time customer but will come back. Had the brekkie wrap which was allot better than I was expecting.

Love this place! The staff .... Love this place!
The staff are so lovely and the food is delicious. Great vegetarian options.
I'll definitely be coming back.

Good coffee, friendly service & yummy breakfast goods - with clever names!

The Mermaid. This is one of the best local cafes in St Kilda, but it's a little bit less well known. The coffee and food is great, and the staff are always friendly. I had the Mermaid for breakfast and the egg white omelette was so so fluffy. Highly recommended.
Geoff
Wow pleasant surprise , james makes a great coffee and chef Lorissa creates great tasty breakfasts, an awesome weekend treat. I will be back....

Now I'm not completely sold on quinoa but I decided to try the quinoa salad at Hide & Cheek this morning and it was sensational! Good coffee + nice atmosphere, think I'll come back!

Great food, great vibe! I.... Great food, great vibe!

I love the vibe here with the great service and they're so friendly. I've had the Mermaid a number of times which is so delicious and fluffy.

It's become my new favourite writing spot with a good portion of my second book written here.

Yummmm!

Attentive service, good coffee, great menu with some interesting brunch options. The Mermaid was a sensational, fluffy omelette with delicious vodka cured salmon. Eggs Benedict was great too.

Hmm... While I love the concept and vibe of this place, I must say my pancakes ('Buck Rogers') were bland and rather dull. The pancakes themselves were fluffy but with only a hint of taste, so they relied on the toppings for the flavour. Unfortunately there was only a small drizzle of maple syrup. Luckily the berries saved the day. Hot chocolate was nice enough. Will try again with a different menu choice as I really want to fall in love with this place!
