Review Krua Thai - St Kilda

AussieSomchai
Definitely the worst pad kra pow I've ever had. It is nothing like an authentic Thai pad kra pow at all. A real Thai pad kra pow would have chicken/beef/pork/seafood, holy basil, chill & some Thai seasoning (fish sauce, oyster sauce, green lid sauce). But what I got was so many vegetables, filled with mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, sweet potato, cabbage, etc. . It also only had ONE LEAF OF BASIL, which defeats the entire purpose of pad kra pow(kra pow meaning holy basil)to which they used the wrong time of basil as well, since the correct type is holy basil(basil is holapa, holy basil kra pow). I had asked for spicy, but they gave me at most 4 chillies in the entire dish, which for a Thai dish is not even the bare minimum. The worst part yet was that they added bell pepper, which completely overpowers any spice or saltiness that the dish has with this unbearable sweetness. I paid 18.90 dollars for this when I could've easily got something 100x better in Thailand for 2 dollars easily! If I could even find a positive it would be that the give a fair bit of food, but it seems that this restaurants motto is "quantity over quality" Just extremely disappointed, waste of money, never coming back here.

I have been in the restaurant many times since last time to give them another chance , food is actually really good so can't help it . Service improved massively and staff is super polite . Therefore I am changing my rating to 5 star and recommend the place for a great Thai food experience 👍🙏

The pad Thai was not very tasty and left my stomach feeling bad. The chicken satay skewers were yummy but the curry puffs had more of a samosa texture than a curry puff. I would not eat here again or recommend it.

japanese kind of style tiny narrow shop, would be good if they redesigned so the counter space had the cooking happen in front of you.... but food was really great judged over several meals & both takeaway & eat in was same high standard.

Tom yum chicken here is the best, I love this place for soups mostly.

Out of interest I went through my emails and I've had Krua Thai delivered at least 44 times and never had a dud. By far my most go-to delivery place (and I think the first time I've left a review for somewhere). Hit up the beef curry puffs, fried rice (with pork for me, chicken for the wife), and the crispy pork with Chinese broccoli, all great.

15-20 seats inside, 2 tables outside. Not with big seating place but Asian style. The flavor is good and tasty, the price with the size is reasonable in this busy area. Not a decent place for formal dining, but a casual touch for family.

Great food. Musman beef and Red curry duck with veg. Yum. Not much of a dine in experience, only 12 seats. No toilet have to go to McD across the road. I would go back.

Yum! We ordered a delicious Thai dinner from Krua Thai. Spring rolls, curry, beef stir fry = all super tasty and fresh. Generous portions, lots of flavour and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back :)

I order Take away of stir fried, they served only half take away box. It’s very expensive and also the taste is changed

This is our comfort place for Thai cuisine. Quite small, clean and simple restaurant that consistently dishes out Thai food that's a treat to our taste-buds. Everything that we have ordered so far is yummy and value for money.

Attendants are efficient and very friendly.
Good Food Good Mood
Last night we attempted to visit many a ‘trending’ venue for dinner but the Easter Monday public holiday rendered many of the hot spots closed (which doesn’t make a lot of sense from a business perspective so they are clearly all raking it in). We found ourselves at Krua Thai in St Kilda which is one of two in Melbourne (the other located in Richmond). Upon arrival we realised it was clearly more of a take away place as seating only accommodated about ten and we were a group of 4. The Uber eats man was run off his feet zipping in and out with orders as we sat there waiting for someone to attend to the table. We swiftly realised you need to pay and order at the counter but the food came out quickly thereafter (and was unbelievably cheap).
I ordered chicken satay skewers and chicken puffs for entree. The satay sauce was very tasty but the puffs weren’t quite crispy enough for me. Main wise we had chicken cashew nut and chicken pad see ew (big night on the poultry). I liked the cashew nut but my partner who chose it wasn’t a big fan. I quite enjoyed the taste of the noodle dish too it was just the atmosphere that was lacking for me. No issues with the food and certainly good value but in terms of the overall experience probably not one to put on the list

Such good food at great prices.
Tom yum soup was so tasty with a great kick of heat. Also ordered the chilli prawn and veg - good portion of prawns and a nice variety of veg

One of my new local favourite Thai places.

On food, Krua Thai scores 5! Cushions on benches at intimate tables, create an ‘at home’ feel. Order and pay at the counter, and the dishes were brought to us quickly, with big smiles. The prices are just as magnificent as the food. We’ll be back more often.

I ordered Thai green curry, rice, spring rolls and satay chicken skewers. The food wasn't bad it was ok. However the green curry didn't have bamboo shoots in it and that's one texture and flavour I love about thai green curries so that was a bit disappointing. Spring rolls were ok dipping sauce way to spicy though. All and all not to bad. It was also delivered in 20 mins which is very fast

Ordered in through Deliveroo and the food arrived within 20 or 30 minutes. The curries are very nice full of flavour and generous portions. We shared the beef red curry and penang curry with rotti and rice. I have never tried a penang curry as I am creature of comfort and usually go for my usual green or red but wow wee!! I think I have found my new favourite curry, the salty and sweet together - delicious.

Liked the food and it was great value for money. Service was prompt and efficient too. Limited drinks choices but is byow. Would be pretty cramped in winter though when outdoors dining is not a pleasant option!

BYO wine but no wine buckets...so if you plan on keeping your wine cold on a 37" day, forget about it. Forgot to charge us corkage when we ordered everything else (pay upfront) and then wouldn't take eftpos for corkage (under $20)...pretty poor customer service. Asked if the air conditioning could be turned on given the stifling heat (unit was in direct sight) but was advised it wasn't working...so we suffered in pools of our own sweat. Asked 3 times for wine glasses. Emphasised we wanted our entree brought out as an entree...still brought out with main meals, without any plates. Food was nice but no ambience and lack of customer service won't see us return.

I haven't actually dined in, but this is our no.1 take-out option whenever my partner and I can't be bothered cooking. Authentic Thai food at super reasonable prices! We've never been disappointed! Our favourites - Massaman + Pad Thai

Nice food. Ordered online and I was eating delicious food in 15 minutes!!!! Cheap, simple Thai full of flavour. Good spring rolls and Tom yum soup. The main dish was full of flavour. Pretty good overall!

If I'm in St Kilda and I feel like Thai this is my first stop. Cheap Thai but the food is also very good. Quick service so you don't have to wait to long for your meal.
Robert Young
This is more like a fast food place. They do more delivery that dine in. Inedible food. An embarrassment to Thai cuisine. Food so salty I had to walk out. Totally disappointed. Go somewhere else.

Amazing!!!!!!!
This is a hidden gem in st kilda! Low prices n high quality food! I'd happily be a weekly customer here!
Pad Thai was simply amazing and the Tom yum soup u get competes with any u can buy at a high end restaurant!
Xoxo

For what you pay and what you get is pretty astounding. This place is cheap and the food you get is pretty decent, world's apart from other cheap thai places. The entrees are good and the BBQ Chicken with nam jim jaew is tasty.

Great little place. This is my third visit here and it keeps getting better. My friend and I ordered a feast, of beef and vegie curry puffs, Krua Thai Puffs, roti bread, massamun beef, Thai vegie fried rice and BBQ chicken with nam jim jaew. All the food was excellent and very reasonable. The staff are attentive and friendly. And I just found out that there is another restaurant in Richmond, mmmnn I travelled all this way and I could have gone for dinner locally lol
Well worth the trip though :)

Krua Thai was so much better than expected. Their chicken satays and fried rice were one of the best ive ever had. The green curry and pad thai were both delicious and very fresh. Wish I lived in the area just so i could come back.

THIS. PLACE. IS. AMAZING!

I took a trip to Thailand last year and my obsession is Pad See Ew. At Krua Thai, it's the best I've ever tasted, better than Thailand! They put so much meat in the dishes, the portions are perfect and the flavour is INCREDIBLE. I was hesitant at first, looking at other Thai restaurants in the area, but I'm so glad I chose this place. If you have never been here, YOU NEED TO!

One of the best Thai food I've had in Melbourne🎈Small restaurant but they run their business/ cook with passion! Excellent speed for home deliveries too.

Negative: minimal table service
Angel Putritama
the food was really good! But whats disappointing is such a price but very small portion. Its one of the best thai in Area but considering the portion its very hard to pay such expensive food
Heranginatalie
Yum yum!. Delicious food and fast service! I'll definitely be back! 10/10 :)

Has gone really downhill.. I have been a regular of Krua Thai for over a year now but was very disappointed with the food after my last order for home delivery. The Pad Thai was measly - one prawn, one piece of squid and two pieces of chicken seems very mean-spirited. The Muslim beef curry which I had so enjoyed on other occasions was a real letdown due to the dry, flavourless, overcooked beef (it had the texture of ancient dog food pulled out of a deep freeze). The meat was so unappetising we had to leave it on our plates. Expensive for food of such poor quality. A shame as this had been my go-to Thai local up until now.

Best thai Iv ever had!. After trying Krua thai I have decided that its the best thai food iv ever had! Mee goreng and pork spring rolls are my go to at least once a week, only down side would be the wait time on home delivery some times. They seem to fall over when it gets really busy. Other than that I have always experienced great service and enjoy taking my friends and family there for dinner. Keep ups the good work guys!

Rude and unapologetic - Bad service in taking orders.. I will start in a positive note that my partner and I were very regular customers and enjoyed the food. Now for the negative part..
We ring up to make our orders and they pick up the phone and then say please hold. They then take orders in the shop in the meantime whilst we are on hold and perform other tasks as we can hear down the phone line. Bare in mind this is our mobile bill and time. This happens 70% of the time and usually on hold for 3-5mins. This may not sound long but if you cant take the order then they shouldn't answer the phone. At times we had got half way through the order then told to hold or before could confirm payments details and the order they put phone down. On our last and final time we went to order we were shocked. We rang up and they answered then they put us on hold for 20mins whilst they continue to take new orders. I told my partner to go to shop and show them that we were still on hold. They couldn't care less and just said we are busy. My partner came home upset on way they treated her so I went down and experienced the same. They were not interested. I tried to make my point of customer service and I was ignored. I said I can appreciate if your busy but don't pick up the phone then let your customers hold on the line for long duration. Its not way any business should be run. I asked to speak to the manager but they told me there wasn't one. I asked again then they said he is on holiday and I can ring him if I really wanted to. I took her up on that but then she said she didn't have his number. I told her I would be back to complain but I just decided to boycott the place based on poor customer service. I don't think she was grasping what the issue was?? We were very regular but they couldn't care less. St Kilda is a tourist area so come the winter they probably want more business but we are one customer who wont be going back. I will be telling my local friends of my experience. Poor effort.

Great takeaway option. Had takeout from Krua Thai for dinner tonight and it was great! Easy online ordering, tasty food, generous portions, well priced, and free delivery! (with food arriving only 20 minutes after placing the order). Will definitely be ordering from here again.
MeccaFoods
Tasty Thai. Eaten here tonnes of times, both takeaway and dining, and it's always a winner in my eyes. Well priced also which is unusual for St Kilda.
Melfoodie
Tasty curry, service not so good. Their green curry is just amazing. Tried dining in and the service isn't just good enough. Think we waited for 1 hour 10 min or so. When we order takeaways, they are usually there at our door step in less half an hour! So we just get takeaways and the green curry has turned out amazing each time.
IrishFoodie
Yummmm. Krua Thai does the best Green Curry in St. Kilda. The service is a bit mehhhh but the food is delicious - I always order at least 3 starters. Food is great value and did I mention delicious!!!!!

Good stuff. Really yummy thai, ordered a pickup was ready in 15min. The tom yum prawn is awesome!... nice and cheap also. will definitely try these guys again

Ordered and paid online, waited for two hours for it to arrive and when it came it was cold and tasteless. Staff were not one bit apologetic ans the delivery guy pratically threw the food at me even though i only called up once to ask about my order.Never go or order from there.

I'm local, and a fairly regular in house guest here. Krua has great quirky feel to it, as you step thru the narrow door. good people, great value for money, healthy Thai food. Curry Laksa, delicious. thoroughly recommend for a cosy casual Thai experience..

A second home to us!!!!. My gf and I regularly eat at Krua Thai. If we are lazy we order the food delivered and it is at our door step before we have figured out what to eat. The Laksa is amazing but don't go past the Pork Neck BBQ grill.

Horrible! A simple takeaway Phad thai, the smell when I opened it made me dry wretch, a mix of dog food and shrimp paste. A brick of noodles landed on the plate, I had one mouthful and it went staright in the bin. If I lived closer I would take it straight back for a refund.

Awesome restaurant. Tried a variety of foods on the menu and multiple times and highly recommend

Don't dare ask to split the bill. My wife and I decided on Thai takeaway the other week. We always get our Thai fix from Krua Thai in St Kilda as it's convenient and this particular evening was no exception.

I ordered the usual 3 meat dishes, Tom Kah Tofu and some rice. It was a cold and wet evening so I decided to drive down to pick up the food myself as delivery would have taken too long.

When I arrived to pick up the order I asked if I could pay part of the bill with cash and the remainder with my EFTPOS card. The man behind the counter was thrown off guard by this request so called for his more senior colleague in the kitchen.

The colleague emerged and told me that split billing was not allowed yet just this once (because it's my lucky day?) he would allow it. Now that would have been fine if said politely but this guy was rude and clearly unimpressed that I had mentioned such a thought in this establishment.

The man was fuming as he slid my card through the EFTPOS machine and danced his fingers across the cash register's touch screen. He made the point that they are charged 5% per EFTPOS transaction. I quickly did the math in my head and realised that this equated to $1.50 (only $30 was on EFTPOS) which is hardly anything to cry over. As a matter of fact I actually saved the guy money by split billing. $50 (the total bill) on EFTPOS would have been $2.50 commission.

At this point I was regretting letting this man take my $50. I'm sure many of the other establishments nearby would have been glad to accept my money in whichever form.

The food tasted pretty bland after this experience. The tangy fish is ok but by principle I will never spend a cent at Krua Thai again. I wouldn't want them to pay commission on it.

Our housemate orders takeaway from Krua Thai on a weekly basis, so the man and I gave this place a go. The delivery was prompt, and our chosen dishes were pretty darn tasty. We had the garlic roti (nom rating of 9/10), steamed rice, and the beef with vegetables and cashew. The food was very fresh and we didn't feel like greasy little piggy-beasts afterwards. Portion sizes were also quite reasonable for the prices.

Great Thai Food. We go here often and have never had a bad meal. The food is always fresh and flavoursome. The prices are extremely reasonable. My favourite is the Gado Gado.

Although staff were rude! Food was great! Quick and easy and very cheap!!! Loved the chicken curry! Definitely going back again!

*****. I am a huge fan of Krua Thai, I have been eating there on occasion for over 5 years and have never had any sort of problem..the food is always delicious and fresh the orders are always correct and delivery is timely. Even if it takes a bit longer...Its worth the wait! I highly recommend trying Krua Thai if you haven't already!

WORST SERVICE!!. Was a long time customer, rang up to ask if I could pay by credit card over the phone, was told yes. I am handicapped and unable to pick up order myself, and had arranged someone to pick it up for me.

When I placed the order half an hour later, I was told that I had to come down and sign for the credit card. I explained that was impossible, and that is why I had rung up previously to ask specifically if I could pay over the phone. When passed to the owner/manager, the response was "use your common sense, you can pay over the phone with a card but you have to come and sign for it"!!
I explained I was a long time loyal customer, but he did not seem to care.
NEVER GOING BACK, AVOID GOING THERE!
Also last time I ate there the salad was old and browning, and the tomotoes had that horrible "over-ripe" flavour. I didn't say anything because I didn't ant to cause a fuss.
AVOID KRUA THAI!!!
Stacey Di Cocco
Amazing food! Try the red curry. Definatly recommend!

A delicious insight into the Thai "flavour" of life, fresh, authentic, clean food with welcoming staff. Ideal sized portions, great location, sumptuous meal and a overall a great night

Amazing food!! Best Thai in ages!! Great people / service too!

Authentic flavors. Tried this place with my Accomplice Anna one rainy Friday evening. Had the Fish Thai Salad which was very spicy and tasted great! ... Green Curry with prawns, Pefect! ... and the roasted pork which was very dry and chewy. Great little place, will go there again!

Consistent, fast, delicious, and well priced. Have tried a few around the area and these guys are the best. 90% says it all.

Fast Delivery!. I've only ever order from Krua Thai for delivery but I have to say that the food is delicious and the delivery is quite fast. It's definitely my favourite Thai in this area.

Fish cake is the best!!!
Foodlover
Great food delivered fast.. Fast tasty food that was delivered to the next suburb in under 20 minutes. The pad thai was delicious and value for money. The beef samosa was absolutely divine with lovely fresh flaky pastry and the prawn spring roll was a prawn wrapped in pastry fried to perfection (with a hint of wasabi?). I highly recommend this as a cheap quick takeaway. Keep in mind that the entrees are 'per piece' on the menu.

Great consistency. Great thai food, always consistent. Definitely best to order as take-away rather than sit in, perhaps for those Sunday hangovers.

It's a must.
David Phuah
Usually our staple takeaway. But since opening up at the other end of Acland St (near Renix) it's an awesome sit on place as well. Cheap and cheerful.
Miss
Lovely food, have had their green curry and Thai beef salad and both were delicious. Don't like the $15 card min however. My order came to $14.70 and they would not let me pay by card. Had to tell her just to take 15 bucks in order to get my food.

Good Thai!!. Had dinner here last night really good quality Thai... Fresh and bold tastes. Lovely service and easy :-) little and intimate but highly recommended
