The best place I have dined at so far, absolutely excellent in every way! Atmosphere and food was top notch and very friendly staff!
Wow! This is the freshest, most amazing food ever! Authentic Japanese food, head chef is Japanese. Everything is melt in your mouth and so more-ish. 10 stars
Absolutely amazing.
From being greeted at the door to leaving.
Host was amazing, food looked like art and tasted just as good.
Would go back in a heartbeat.
The atmosphere is amazing and comfortable.
If there was a more star rating this would get the highest available. Very very good.
The food was absolutely amazing and the service was excellent. I fully recommend this great restaurant.
Delicious, quality food and great customer service in an ambient environment. Love the Japanese courtyard!
Fantastic quality servings. Beautiful ambiance and service. The Hotate Yaki (Japanese scallop) and the Oyster Shooter was an absolute stand out! Kudo's to the staff - We will be back, thank you :)
The food is amazing here and the service is just exceptional! Will definately be back for more!
Definitely a premium place to have Japanese food. Premium sashimi, definitely worth it. Beef tatami, you won’t get it anywhere else. Great environment for two.
Will come back for:
+ Sashimi
+ Spider roll
+ Black cod
Came here on a Saturday night for dinner, and had a lovely time. The sashimi was the highlight for me (fresh, well treated, and melt in your mouth). We also ordered an assortment of yakitori, and although nice was on the pricey side for what you get. The tempura moriawase was good but I felt the batter could be crunchier. The spider roll was delicious though (textural, tasty and moorish). And the black cod with the miso paste was deliciously flakey and fresh. Service was excellent and the place had a great vibe and full of locals. Price is on the fine dining end, but the place was cosy and reminded me of the eateries in Japan. A good Japanese option in this area.
Real rating 4.25 ⭐️
We had visited Fujitei for dinner and we had such a wonderful experience!
We were served with a variety of wonderful dishes such as beef tataki, scallops, sashimi and yakitori! The sashimi was super fresh and of high quality and the yakitori was grilled well on the flame making the meat extra tender and juicy!
It was an impressive night at Fujitei and we would love to visit them again!
Fujitei is an authentic Japanese restaurant in St Kilda. It is a neighbourhood gem, run by passionate chefs who are driven to serve classic Japanese cuisine. We were invited to try their menu, and really loved the relaxed, warm atmosphere and beautifully made dishes. This inside out maki roll ($20) was filled with lots of tuna and salmon, coated with crispy tempura and topped with salmon caviar. I love that the simple fresh flavours of the raw fish gave the roll richness and creaminess, rather than the usual over the top mayonaise/sauce that you find in a lot of maki dishes. I really loved the tempura bits and the pop of caviar too. Super yum. A great dish to share!

Overall score: 19/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: good Japanese food and cocktails!
*
Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - two things on the menu I would highly recommend would be the aptly named yuzu heaven cocktail and sashimi. Vodka and organic yuzu extract really complement each other well YUM. Would have ordered more but don’t wanna be that tipsy woman in a classy Jap restaurant.
*
Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - This is a small but beautifully decorated Japanese restaurant and izakaya
*
Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️- The cost including alcohol would be $40 and above per person, depending on how hungry you are. Pretty standard. We ordered quite a lot and left pretty stuffed and satisfied.
*
Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Love how dishes were presented at this place.
*
Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Staff were friendly and patient during the ordering process.
Authentic Japanese restaurant, one of the best in Melbourne for sure.
Huge range of drinks list on offer, super friendly and efficient staffs.
Sushi and sashimi platter was very fresh and yummy especially that white eel and scampi.
The Taraba Crab tempura is definitely a must try dish, very fresh meaty crab with super crispy and thin tempura on the outside.
Will certainly be back to try out other dishes. Great place.
I’m so glad to have visited Fujitei as I love Japanese food and this place served everything I love. Food was authentic and incredibly fresh! What really surprised me was how the place has a little yakitori outback with the masterchef at work. The meat was so tender and well marinated. My favourite was the scallops, yakitori skewers, sashimi platter and cod. Everything was delicious! Thanks for having us
Fujitei has a very rustic but authentic feel about the Japanese style of cooking. With almost a street food style cuisine paired with a 5 star service and preparation and playing. Fujitei is must do for all lovers of Japanese cuisine
Took the better half for a birthday dinner to this highly rated Japanese gem. Did not disappoint! Gyoza, beef slices, tempura and agedashi tofu were all lovely. The tasting plate desert was a wonderful way to finish (black sesame ice cream was delicious). Yuzu Heaven cocktail was fresh and crisp. Ambience was relaxed and warm. Will be back!
Fujitei provides an authentic and fusion Japanese cuisine and is tucked away in the streets with a lot of residential and work buildings - it really is a hidden gem!
We came here for dinner on a weekday, and as soon as we walked into the place, the friendly staff showed us our table. The restaurant was very nicely decorated and there was a huge tree in the middle of the place, hanged with lanterns. As we peeked outside, we saw a very beautiful Japanese style garden in the courtyard that we just had to take photos of!
The whole menu looked appealing and there was so much we wanted to try so we asked for the staff's recommendation and it worked out well for us!
We had these dishes for starters:
-Freshly shucked oyster with ponzu and salmon roe: The oyster was so fresh and nice!
-Sliced steamed duck breast with mustard and ponzu: The duck was very lean. It takes a lot of work to make it this tasty!
-Hokkaido japanese scallop, pan seared in Japanese sake dressed and flame torched Mentai (spicy cod roe) mayonnaise: The mentai was a bit salty, but it enhanced the sweetness of the scallops and it was delicious.
We had an assortment of raw salmon, raw tuna and the snapper nigiri sushi.
It wasn't like the traditional nigiri - the staff advised us to try the snapper first with the lemon and pepper/salt which really brought out the freshness of the piece. I dipped the salmon nigiri in the raspberry puree which was creative and it really works! The taste matched and it was a bit of sweetness instead of saltiness when we usually dip them in soy sauce. They created the soy sauce themselves so it wasn't as salty anyway, it was like a sweeter soy and it tasted great with the third piece which was the tuna.
The Salmon Carpaccio was very unqiue as well! The salmon is marinated in their original blend of basil, olive oil and vinaigrette. The flavours are really different from the traditional carpaccio and I love this dish!
The cured black cod in chef's special miso was one of the nicest ways to cook a fish! The staff advised the skin might be a bit bitter so just eat the insides and it was just so soft, sweet and fresh.
They have a very interesting dish called the Signature "Houbayaki" - Premium Wagyu beef cooked over enhanced miso paste on dry houba leaf and topped with spring onions w julienne cut. The meat is already cooked but it was presented in a mini charcoal grill so you can keep it warm or let it cook more etc. You can also customise the saltiness by adjusting the miso paste on the wagyu according to taste preferences. Very creative dish but I actually prefer the other dishes over this one!
There were some dishes that was a bit salty but staff did advise that we can put less of the sauce/miso paste to adjust ourselves so it was great.
After all this, we were presented with dessert which is the ice cream and the pannacotta/pudding.
Overall, I really like this place - the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their food, good atmosphere, and the food creativity is just awesome! Thank you Fujitei!
Overall the food was delicious. I thought the wagyu houbayaki was a tad overrated. They had a stringy bite which was unpleasant. Sashimi were very fresh. Black sesame panna cotta was a perfect sweet finish.
Love this place! Great locale tucked away in the back lots of St Kilda. Food is excellent as too the service. A staple lunch spot when I’m in the hood.

Oishi desu ne!!
Me and my boyfriend were there for dinner on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was very quiet just one table in the house. The inside decoration was nice feeling like I was in Japan.
We ordered
🥩 Houba Taki (the wagyu just cooked to perfection, very tender and juicy. Love the aroma of the magnolia leave on the meat as well)
🍣 Signature Sushi and Sashimi Platter
( the fish was fresh and cut nicely by the chef but inside of the maki there was a mixed of lettuce leaves which doesn’t make sense and smelled a bit weird)
🐟 5 Kinds Carpaccio;
(I have to say that the quality of the fish and seafood here was a top notch. The vinaigrette was so yummy and refreshing)
🐚Oyster Shooter;
( Fresh oyster with a delicious ponzu sauce but the salmon roe was a bit too salty)
🦀 Soft Shell Crab;
( This one was really yum!! Crispy on the outside and soft in the inside)
Overall fujitei was a nice authentic Japanese restaurant with good quality food, yes a little bit pricey but worth it.
#noeyeats
Fujitei offers authentic fusion Japanese food with an emphasise on quality and freshness.
For entrees we were served the Oyster Shoot which was drowned in delicious ponzu sauce topped with salmon roe. The oyster was incredibly smooth, creamy and was an absolute delight. Perfectly balanced in flavour and texture. The Hokkaido Scallops were topped with mentaiko mayonnaise and flame torched. The mentaiko flavours worked so well with the fresh scallop.
If you love sushi, they have the most delicious and beautiful platter of sushi and sashimi. Not only did it look so beautiful, it was delicious and portions are great for sharing with friends and family.
Highlights of the night was the wagyu beef and the cured black cod, both accompanied with a delicious house made miso sauce. Signature dishes that is a must have! One of the best wagyu beef i have had in Melbourne, moist, tender and juicy.
We finished the meal with a black sesame mocha with matcha ice cream. This dessert was so delightful! This almost jelly like texture melts in our mouths without being overly sweet, the matcha ice cream just pairs perfectly.
We highly recommend Fujitei!
Dined as a guest invited along other food bloggers to sample the high quality and authentic Japanese food. At Fujitei, each dish is prepared and cooked using fresh and original ingredients. The customer staff was friendly and very knowledgeable explaining the food in details. The restaurant has an authentic Japanese interior design fitting.
Fujitei is incredibly popular and it’s so easy to see why - this one is a must book! They had an incredible sampling on offer including hotate yaki (hokkaido scallop), the oyster shooter with ikura and ponzu, and the star of the night, the delicious Houba Yaki - Wagyu beef and house made special miso paste that tasted like it was given by the gods(!) served on a houba leaf that had a flame underneath to give it an incredible smokey flavour! 5/5 🌟!
Fujitei is a Japanese restaurant with a focus on simple but quality Japanese cuisine. Head towards the back and sit in either the outdoor garden or the “indoor” garden. Sushi, tataki and sashimi were all fresh and flavourful but the best dish has to be their seared beef with miso paste!
Note that thefo0die.com rating is a 4.5 but in Zomato's rating system, it is closer to a 5.
Fo0die dined as a guest of Fujitei and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.
Located in St Kilda, we took a tram from the CBD out on a Friday evening. The venue’s name ‘Fujitei’ has a lovely back story with the owner taking part of the name from his own father’s dental business and their own family name. The owner brings his experience as a general manager of another very popular Japanese restaurant, Shiranui in Glen Waverley, to Fujitei and aims to bring the freshest produce to the table.
Great food, good service. Love the sashimi and unagi maki roll here.
We’ve have been back couple of times and also introduced it to friends.
Was lucky to be invited to check out their new lunch items and Suntory Premium Malt Masterclass at their garden lunch. The restaurant has a cosy inside and a relaxing garden, making you feel like you're in Kyoto.
We tried the delicious fresh oysters topped with ikura & uni (I.O.U), Uni don, Houma yaki and black sesame panna cotta. As well as their creamy Suntory Beer.
The oysters were super fresh as well as the Uni which arrived 2hr before serving. The Uni Don is perfect for uni lovers like me, it was super fresh and the balance of pickles perfectly complemented the dish. The Houba yaki was AMAZING! The Beef is cooked on a special Japanese Magnolia leaf with miso paste on a Japanese grill. The beef was perfectly cooked and tender.
Cant wait to check out their other items! i heard its amazing !
Had the opportunity to try some of their new lunch items - I.O.U (ikura, oyster & uni), uni don, houba yaki and black sesame panna cotta.
The oysters and uni were SO FRESH! The uni had just arrived a couple hours before we got there. The houba yaki (wagyu) was so tender and the miso under it went so well with the beef! Their black sesame panna cotta was the perfect light dessert to end the meal.
We also got to try their new Suntory Premium malt which was super refreshing in this warmer weather.
I look forward to going back to try their other dishes!
Incredible food and service! We had a variety of sashimi, sushi and grilled dishes and every dish was better than the last. Would definitely go back.
Ambience: 5/5
The restaurant has a great, warm atmosphere and the tree in the middle really adds a lot to the decor. They also have an outdoor seating area with a japanese garden view👍🏻
Service: 5/5
All the staffs were very attentive and friendly. The owner was very nice and explained the menu to us patiently.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Their in house photographer happened to be taking promo photos next to my table and he was very cute and chatty. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Food: 5/5
Their signature carpaccio combination is a MUST TRY, my favorite dish at Fujitei so far. The sauce really does bring out the flavor and freshness of the sashimi 😊😊
Anago sushi was bomb, the eel has a very soft and juicy texture, I have had lots of anago sushi in my life but fujitei’s one was VERY different, but in a good way.
Their seasonal wagyu dish was amazing too, i think it’s sometimes off the menu due to ingredients reason(?) but it is definitely a must order if it’s available. The owner explained that the leaf used is delivered specially from Japan. Although I can’t really tell if it adds flavor to the beef but I find it to be a very thoughtful addition!!
Location: 4/5
Might be difficult to locate their restaurant for your first visit as it is in a very quiet residential street in St Kilda. But perhaps it’s a good idea cus it makes it easy for drivers to park their cars. There are quite a few trams that can get you there from melb CBD. Hmmm and it’s only a short walk to st kilda/windsor for people who prefer after dinner drinks.😉
Price: 4.5/5
Quite reasonably priced I suppose.😊👍🏻
Overall, Fujitei is one of the best japanese restaurants in melbourne and I would definitely recommend it to my friends/family!!!!!!!
I had Fujitei bookmarked for a while now as I live in the are and drive past all the time. I finally visited last week for a midweek lunch and was delighted to have finally crossed it off my list.
Straight off the bat upon walking through the doors, the staff at Fujitei were warm, positive and extremely inviting. It wasn't too busy and I was actually surprised to be walked into a much bigger dining space (as it appears small and quaint from the outside). Once we were seated I also noticed the courtyard space outside which would be an amazing spot for dinner or a lunch date if the weather is nice.
My partner and I quickly looked over the Express Lunch Set Menu and the Ala Carte Lunch options and decided on the Sashimi Lunch Set and the Chirashi Set. These came with pickles, fruit, rice (unfortunately they were out of brown rice on the day but I liked that this was an option), seaweed salad, chawanmushi and miso! Although both of our dishes were about $20 each I thought given the inclusions that it was pretty good value for money.
When our dishes came out I was very pleased at the quality and freshness of the ingredients. It screamed 'authentic fresh Japanese' and thats what I really liked about it. We both really enjoyed our meal and although we only sat in for a short lunch break and left I would come back to sample the dinner ala carte menu and try more of the menu!
4.5 to be precise
I’ve been meaning to come here for a while now and running an errand nearby that day provided the perfect excuse.
Walking into Fujitei, we were greeted with such warmth and positive vibe by both its front of house members and interior, which appeared to be carefully thought out right through to the little rear courtyard.
The Pan Fried Salmon Gozen Set was a rare selection by me as I usually try to steer away from anything laced with teriyaki due to quite a few unfortunate places that do it overly sweet. By chancing it here that day, Fujitei has restored my faith in good teriyaki sauce. Paired with my perfectly cooked salmon, it was undeniably fabulous!
There was no shortage of flavour or quality in my partner’s Chicken Kara Age Set either. The juicy chicken pieces were deliciously well seasoned and delightfully crispy on the outside.
Our lunch sides were all equally enjoyable - the standouts would have to be the exceptionally fresh sashimi and silky smooth chawanmushi.
The portion of Beef Tataki we shared was regrettably the least favourable dish of the day, where the sauce was pleasantly delicate, but the beef was somehow lacking of its natural flavours.
The suggested beer by one of the staff members was an excellent choice. It was at the perfect temperature with a good head and great lacing.
Overall, it was a nice introduction to the calibre of the food and service here, and certainly has our tastebuds tingling for more.
Ambience 4/5 Clean, cozy with Japanese lamps and pleasant background music.
Service 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-star friendliness from our server and very quick service too.
Food 4/5 Doesn't really have the wow factor but its good enough to say you had a decent Japanese lunch.
Value 5/5 Their lunch sets are a good value for money.
Blink and you may miss it, Fujitei is a hidden gem in St Kilda. Turn right down St Kilda Road and you head towards Fitzroy Street, but turn left and go down the quiet Wellington St and go to this beauty of a restuarant.
From the outside, you can’t really tell what’s going on, but from the moment you step inside, you know you’re walking into someplace special. The interior is a mix of classic Japanese, but with modern touches including murals and an indoortree structure with laterns.
Good Japanese lives and dies on their sashimi and oh my, this place delivers. Usually I love the tuna (which I did love), but this time it was the salmon and salmon belly that were the stars. Fresh, creamy texture, clean salmon. When salmon trumps tuna, then it's good salmon!
But there are lots of quality a la carte options for you to dive into. We ate a lot, and we both had differing opinions on what we loved. We both agreed that the sashimi, miso steak on the grill, fujitei maki were the clear standouts. I alsoenjoyed the soy duck breast and ponzu oyster shooter. What we definitely agreed on was the quality of the food, any one of the above dishes on its own would be a 5 star dish, we were incredibly spoilt to have several.
Another reason why this place is 5 stars is because of the service. Ryo is a star and you can tell lives and breathes Japanese food. His sake knowledge was out of this world, it was like talking to a sommelier. The other tables were enjoying his service as much as we were.
There’s lot of ‘pretty good’ Japanese restaurants, but Fujitei really is a heads and shoulders above the rest. ありがとうございます Arigatou gozaimasu!!!
When you walk into Fujitei it feels like you’ve been transported to a restaurant in Japan. It has a calming, warm and welcoming atmosphere and the menu is modern while honouring the traditional flavours and techniques. The menu is exciting and has lots to choose from and the high-quality produce makes all the difference.
4.5 You’ll feel tucked away from the world at Fujitei, all the while enjoying their excellent Japanese food with premium ingredients. Already on a...
Love their tempura dishes especially king prawn tempura, vegetables and homely soba noodles. Their scallops, cod fish and teriyaki chicken was delicious too. Food get sold out quick here so the few popular items were gone before we could order any
Recommended by friend. Very Fresh Sashimi and tasty beef cuisine. The desserts are good too. I Love the sesame ice cream. It’s strong and creamy.
I was invited to try a mini banquet at Fujitei recently. We started w a Tasmanian Oyster shot w Queensland grown edamame and duck. OMGosh what an amazing way to start a meal. Paired w a delicious sake it was a great way to start.
There were many highlights, some of which were salmon belly, tuna and a herb drizzle, Yummo! Lol
Scallops w basil oil were perfectly light and flavoursome.
The sushi was tuna, kingfish and salmon and snapper, soo delicious.
For dessert matcha ice cream w black sesame panacotta was excellent.
If you like good Japanese food then this restaurant is worth a visit.
Came here for a group lunch and we all had a pleasant time. The venue is cosy and authentic, with a beautiful traditional Japanese garden out the back. The staff are extremely polite and accommodating as well.
I opted for the Assorted Tempura Set ($21), which came with rice, pickles, pasta salad, chawanmushi, miso soup and fruit. It was a very nice variety of food, and the serving size was perfect. The tempura consisted of 3 large prawns, sweet potato and pumpkin. It was crispy and flavourful, served with a light dipping sauce and grated radish. The chawanmushi was smooth and light, and the pasta salad was addictive!
We were offered some warming green tea to end our meal. Overall, we all had a wonderful lunch, and I would love to return to try out their dinner menu some time!
Came here for lunch with a bunch of friends and ordered the tempura set. This authentic restaurant provides fast service with a welcoming vibe. The tempura was super fresh and not oily, definitely a tasty mouthful. The whole dish was absolutely wonderful. I could taste the flavours of the sweet potato and prawn through the batter.
Everything tasted super authentic and the green tea was super refreshing. For around $20 I would say that this lunch meal is a bit on the expensive side but it definitely worth it for what you’re getting.
If any Melbourne restaurant deserves a resounding 5/5 on Zomato then it is most definitely Fujitei. I’ve had my fair share of Japanese/Asian restaurants in Melbourne and nothing can compare to the technique, fusion of flavours, and overall attention to detail that we experienced at Fujitei. When we already thought that we had reached the highlight every time a new dish came out, the next one still seemed to somehow exceed the previous one. This was truly a delectable, Japanese degustation experience and the absolute highlights (as impossible as it is to pick) that resonated would be the scallop entree, wagyu and grilled black cod. I honestly cannot recommend this restaurant enough for any lovers of Asian food – and not to mention, supplemented by the delightful company and service of the manager, Ryo.
Wow! Really impressed with the new Fujitei restaurant. Owner Ryo together with Okaasan (his mum) make the most wonderful hosts. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with warm smiles. Food is of exceptionally high standard offering traditional Japanese dishes all beautifully presented. They source local and fresh seasonal produce which is apparent in the flavours. Highly recommend a visit. Extensive sake list as well :)
Very good food and ambience. Japanese food was a mix of fusion and authentic. The sushi/sashimi platters were delicious and so were the carpaccios. Overall a very pleasing dining experience and would return if in the area.
Beautiful interior design for this Japanese restaurant, loved the ambiance! We were greeted by friendly staff and guided to our seats. The entrees we tried were the oyster shots and scallops which were absolutely delicious, the flavors blew us away! The steamed egg and fujitei sushi was yummy...Great start and excited for the mains..unfortunately the mains were a bit of a let down, the lamb was over cooked which ended up too dry and the sauce was overly salty, but we enjoyed the mushroom component on the dish. The Pike dish was flavorsome but serving was small for the price charged. As for dessert, we expected something delicate and nice to finish but both desserts served were underwhelming and nothing special which was a huge let down, maybe dessert is not their speciality. It was the crepe and yuzu desserts we ordered. We would be back for the entrees and to try the tempura dishes though! Service was nice though would be nice if our waiter has some mints on hand in the future. Also at the start waiter kindly briefed us on the components of each dish but this was skipped as they got busier, if this can be done consistently that would be perfect. Teck Joon Yeo
Had lunch here. Ordered two deluxe lunch sets (beef and unagi). Very good for the price. Food wise, everything except for the main dish was good. Unagi had tiny fish bone in it so was a bit annoying. The thinly sliced beef was mediocre. Beef tataki was good though.
Fujitei focuses on fresh produce and traditional cooking methods to create an authentic Japanese dining experience without burning a hole in your wallet . We loved the interior which had beautiful paintings on the walls with a tree in the middle of the restaurant with colourful lanterns hanging off it . The Japanese garden was also a nice surprise so I cant wait until the weather gets warmer to dine outside .
We found the staff extremely attentive and it reminded us of the hospitality we experienced in Japan which was second to none . The menu was very extensive and we were excited to try everything , listed below are the dishes we sampled
The Oyster Shooter : This was a great starter , the perfect balance of tart, creaminess from the oyster and saltiness of the fish roe
Signature Carpaccio of tuna , salmon and kingfish : A taste sensation of ponzu and basil oil, we were not really sure of this mixture until we ate it ! Such a unique and delicious combination of flavours
Chawanmushi : We sampled both Chawan mushi on the menu . This dish is a savoury egg custard and is an extremely difficult dish to master. The consistency of the egg here is near perfection, very silky smooth and full of flavour . Out of the caviar or crab version we preferred the crab
Scallops – My favourite dish here, the scallops which were still perfectly cooked on a bed of buttery mushrooms. With a nice kewpie mayo with a hint of chilli sauce to tie everything together it was heaven in a dish
Tuna steak- The tuna steak was another dish we enjoyed, there was a strong garlic flavour combined with a nice bbq sauce on a hot sizzling plate , you need to be careful with this dish however as the sizzling plate can over cook the tuna quickly
Fujitei Maki Roll – A great salmon sushi showcasing the technique of the chef .
Unagi – The eel was smokey and melting in the mouth. This was one of the best unagi we have had in Melbourne
Black Sesame Pannacotta – The dessert although looked underwhelming was a perfect end to the meal, the pannacotta was light and the black sesame flavour prominent. The watermelon surprisingly paired nicely with the pannacotta
Fujitei is definitely a hidden gem and we are so glad we have discovered it. The passion and love that the owner has put into this establishment is evident . Thank you so much for having us!
Highly recommend this authentic Japanese restaurant in St kilda.
High quality delicious foods and lovely service staff. Also easy to access too. (2 minutes of St Kilda junction)
So fresh Sashimi, Tempura is tasty and crispy. Other foods are also very high quality.
If you like to try real Japanese food you should try Fujitei Japanese restaurant
I have to back again!!
Wanted to try another Japanese restaurant once for a change since I usually go to Nobu or Ichi Nana. Seeing the reviews on Zomato, made me keen to try this place and boy did it not disappoint! The food here is absolutely delicious, would recommend trying out what dish appeals to you the most. All the dishes served had amazing flavour and taste to it. Can’t wait to come back again!

Fujitei is serious about keeping their japanese food traditional and high in quality.
We got to try some of their dishes including winter special wagyu beef, teka maki, miso cured black cod, soy duck breast oyster shooter, and our favourite the hotate yaki (japanese seared scallop). The black cod was amazing as well, it was perfectly done. Totally deserves 5 stars.
For dessert, we had the dessert platter. It was really nice as well.
Dining at Fujitei brought us back to when we were in Japan. There is a little japanese garden in the back, which would be perfect to dine in during summer.
Rediscovered this restaurant recently through Eatclub. I have been years ago and thought it was a bit meh, and when I arrived, I was thinking, uh-oh... i hope they have changed owners! Indeed they have, owner, staff and chef. The food was authentic but innovative at the same time. The chiwanmushi with ikura was wonderful. The unagi sushi roll was delicious, soft and literally melt in your mouth. The tempura was spot on perfect. We didn’t try any sashimi but I look forward to coming back for that. Definitely a neighbourhood gem, indeed a south east suburb gem!
Booked a reservation over the phone couple of hrs before eating later that night. Didn’t get the chance to look at the menu or google it. V quiet night. But the food was amazing! Never have I tried fresh fresh fresh seafood at any restaurant compared to this one. The service was beyond amazing from phone call to walking in, to walking out. Conversing and taking recommendations by the waiter was nothing I’ve experienced in any other restaurant. He was great! Glad that we took his recommendation in trying out the grilled cod 10/10 would recommend.
Travelled to the south of the river to enjoy some traditional Japanese cuisine at Fujitei on Wednesday night. Booked a table for 7:15pm, however the restaurant was quiet and we could have got away with not having one. Staff were lovely and attentive, allowing us to choose our table before promptly bringing us the menus.
The banquet on offer was a little out of our price range at $88 per person, so we made our own selections. For first course we went for the highly recommended oyster shooters and the beef tataki. The shooters lived up to expectations with all the salty, fresh flavours you would expect. The beef tataki was also lovely and carefully presented. For second course we went for the chef's selection of sashimi and sushi platter. This was an impressive platter which we savoured slowly. Carefully taking in each of the portions provided. Highlights here were the scampi and their offering of pickled ginger. All beautiful either way. Last course was their mixed tempura plate, which tasted absolutely amazing. The least prettiest dish, but certainly the best tempura I've had.
A pricey venture, but definitely lovely, well prepared and presented dishes. A great treat for the locals, tucked away in the back streets of St Kilda East. Great service and great ambience. Recommended for a casual date night or a small special occasion.
Best Sushi & Sashimi in Melbourne. Hands down.Been going here regularly and the quality is high and consistent, can't ask for much else.*Bonus points for unbelievable Miso Soup

Fuji Tei is an exceptional Japanese restaurant and may have even taken the top position as my favourite in Melbourne.
With a vast selection of classic Japanese dishes, as well as some exciting fusions, Fuji Tei is a must-try!
Walking into the restaurant, the initial feel is one of warmth and welcome. The decor is kept fairly simple, with all focus pulled to the stunning lantern tree in the centre of the room. All staff, and especially the maître d were friendly and very helpful, offering much-appreciated explanations for each dish.
Oyster Shooter - An excellent way to excite the palate and prepare it for what is to come. The briny taste of the oyster against the sharp ponzu was fantastic and the perfect first course. This was one of our favourite dishes.
Beef Tataki - A familiar favourite well-executed. The quality of the beef was superb with the white radish providing a refreshing hit.
Japanese Scallop - Delicious, buttery scallop on a bed of textured mushrooms. A fantastic pairing with a stunning sauce to tie it all together.
Salad - The garden style salad provided the perfect fresh accompaniment to many of the richer dishes.
fujitei Maki Roll - The fresh pieces of salmon were particularly delicious with the outer rice layer clearly very well prepared.
Black Cod - This was one of the standout dishes of the night. The delicate fish absolutely melted in the mouth and while the flavours were subtle, they were beautiful.
Tempura crab - What a treat! Such juicy, sweet crab with a deliciously crispy exterior. We also loved the green tea salt.
Japanese Steak - Another standout dish. The steak was perfectly cooked with fantastic flavour. It was accompanied with an assortment of vegetables which were all delicious however, the mushroom was the best mushroom I’ve ever had! It was so juicy and rich I’m still thinking about it!
Black Sesame Pannacotta - After an extensive and impressive eight courses of savoury food, we thought we couldn’t possibly fit in dessert..we were wrong. The dessert was the perfect modest size and a light, refreshing end to a stunning meal.
If you live in Melbourne and enjoy Japanese food, add Fuji Tei to your list. Their take on Japanese cuisine is truly stunning. The warm, cosy restaurant provided an excellent setting for us to enjoy a very memorable meal. Thank you for the invitation Fuji Tei, we will definitely be back soon!!
Visited Fuji Tei last night with my wife. We had a wonderful experience overall. Lovely decor, great ambience, with wonderful hosts and waiting staff. Food and drinks came out very quickly, waiters were all very attentive and friendly. Each of our dishes was explained as it arrived to the table. We’ll definitely be back! Stand outs for us were the 3 fish Carpaccio and the premium sashimi. Fish was very fresh and everything was well priced. Couldn’t fault the night!
Craving for Japanese tonight. Went here for the first time , it is a decent restaurant but was not expecting much at first. However, it turns out to be a great night with excellent service ( especially the manager ) , they do present quite a traditional Japanese manner ! ( never seen in Melbourne so far) great food , fresh sashimi, authentic taste! Definitely coming back again!
Amazing delicious food, friendly service. We spent about $320 for 3, included a bottle of sake. To start we ordered Edamame, beef tataki (nice) Caprocciso 3 kind (could eat this all day) sashimi sushi combo, salmon melted in your mouth, scampi was the best I've had in melb, eel was delicious. Then the ebi Tempura and crab legs, (yummy) then finished off with the waygu steak. Can't really fault the food. Will definitely come back and highly recommend this place.
Parking is limited.
Love, love love this restaurant, and I lived in L.A. for many years, home to great sushi - sorry, haven't been to Japan yet. I am quickly writing this review because I have been there 3 times already in as many weeks and am going back tonight, but have still not written a review which at 5 stars is very well deserved.
So the carpaccio of fish is just superb. The quality of the fish, the nice thick portions of fish and the sauce is just perfection.
The house roll is one of the best I have had anywhere, raw, great texture and a bit of crunch - I was nearly put off because it was tempered but it is so light, it just totally compliments it.
The black cod was fantastic, so perfectly done, a little small but with other dishes which you have to try, not complaining.
Their super special eel roll is just so huge and delicious with what felt like an entire eel ! We got this at the end, but it could have been a whole meal in itself it was that well done and cooked to perfection.
Everything on the menu that I have tried so far, makes going out to eat here pure joy.
The restaurant itself is clean and cute and welcoming. The staff have been wonderful, on one occasion the owner's mother served us, such a lovely kind, gentle woman who truly did not look old enough to have a grown son ! We enjoyed the ambience, the staff, and of course the food, which made it a wonderful night each time I have come here. Highly, highly recommend .
It’s a 4.6 for us. What a gem this restaurant is. No wonder so many Japanese people specially seek it out. It serves some seriously good, sometimes absolutely spectacular traditional and fusion dishes with lovely service in very pleasant surroundings. It is the perfect combination for a great night out or a really enjoyable lunch.
Two Sheds and his regular dining companion, a Japanese food aficionado of some note, were lucky enough to be invited to dine here on a cold and dark Tuesday night. This new and beautifully put together Japanese restaurant is located very near St Kilda junction and a short walk from Windsor station. We were greeted by the maître d warmly and shown to an ideal table. The fitout is extremely inviting, warm and there is even a lovely Japanese Garden/courtyard for lazy summer afternoons. How I’d love to have that garden at my own place, including the beautiful stately bamboo.
The menu is elegant and well put together. A beautiful list of sakes is included on the wine list, with a small, but well selected, list of wines. We asked the maître d for the chef’s selection. For entree followed sashimi (at our request), carpaccio of salmon, tuna and kingfish with a ponzu sauce and exquisite scallops grilled with enoki mushrooms. Our favourites on the sashimi were the salmon belly and kingfish and snapper. The salmon belly in particular had a texture and consistency which we hadn’t experienced before. These were amazing (see pictures).
The grilled scallops were topped with a salmon roe mayonnaise which was something we’ve not experienced before. It is a gorgeous dish. It set off the flavour and texture of the enokis very well. And was a perfect match with the recommended dry sake.
As good as the initial dishes were, the absolute highlight offerings were still to come. The dishes of the night came with the main courses. The first was the black cod. Cooked slowly on the grill, this salty and strong fish was served on a bed of special miso. Exquisitely flaky and flavoursome, an acquired taste because of its strength, but something that you MUST come here to taste. It is an exceptional dish which sent us into a state of ecstasy. Some people don’t like the skin, but please try it, because that too was cooked perfectly so as not to be tough. Trust us. This dish alone is enough to cross town for. It’s amazing!
The wagu beef was served on an authentic Japanese grill. Placed on Houba leaf - magnolia in English - over the grill, to protect and flavour the beef. The beef is sourced from Gippsland. It was tender, rare and superbly flavoured. Along with the black cod, you could not get better, authentic, dishes than this were you actually in Japan, a wonderful country that my dining companion and I have been to many times.
Dessert was a touch of tradition coupled with a touch of fusion: green tea ice cream with a delicate and small black sesame panna cotta square. The ice cream was deliciously matcha flavoured (another Two Sheds favourite flavour) and the panna cotta square had delicate smoothness about it which was beguiling. Serves were a perfect (small) size given the feast we’d already eaten.
We were sad our visit had to come to an end here. We enjoyed the whole experience immensely. Japanese food of this high quality is truly a thing to behold and celebrate. If this restaurant was near my home I’d be here on a very regular basis. My dining companion is so lucky. He is in the next suburb and is already planning regular returns including with his partner and father who adore great Japanese food.
If you’re nearby, just visit. If you’re not nearby, my strong advice is make a little effort. I would cross town to get to Fujitei anytime. The restaurant is in the Le Clec category to me. A wonderful restaurant with a buoyant rating and just waiting to be fully discovered.
Our thanks to Ryoichi for such a great experience with superb hospitality. We love this restaurant and highly recommend you visit it soon.
- I was invited to come in to try out the lunch and dinner menu at Fujitei. The restaurant's ambience focuses on Japanese tradition, keeping it simple, clean and bright as well as their culinary skills. The restaurant has recently been renovated and an expensive vase sits at the entrance of the door. The ambience is calm and a woodern tree sits in the middle with lanterns dangling off the branches. The tables are woodern and accompanied with brown chairs to match.
The food is designed to be basic yet refined. .
We first started off with a brown rice tea which is presented in small bowl. The aroma of the tea is smooth and aromatic.
Bonito infused soy sauce makes the sauce not too salty and unique.
We were recommended the Fujiteo delux lunch gozen set which was to serve one but large portioned.
The dishes accompanied were the assorted fresh sashimi cut thick. Assorted tempura has crispy batter and the prawn and veggies were nice and soft. Garden salad was drizzled with sesame sauce. Petite panna cotta was eggy and well made. Miso soup was average. Appetizer and a main dish that we selected as the pan fried salmon which was nice and fatty. As the weather was cold, Ryo opted for a sesame panna cotta which was amazing. Soft, firm and covered with a sweet flavoring and accompainied with some berry and fruits.
The dinner menu we were served sashimi and sushi combo. The sushi was unique and sets itself apart as the rice was extremely soft and the sushi melts in the mouth. Salmon roll is well made and has a kick of spice to it. Tempura roll is compact and has a mix of salmon and tuna which come with spicy mayo. The dishes tha accompanied it like the eel and prawn were fresh and same goes to the salmon.
With a background from the esteemed restaurant Shira Nui, Ryo and the chefs breathe tradition and class back into the old Wabi Sabi site.I was treated to a selection of dishes by the chef:
* Oyster shooter - taste of the ocean from the oyster and salmon ikura with a hint of soy.
*Beef tataki - the pickled onion provided a refreshing textural crunch, with the taste of the beef coming through at the end.
* Grilled scallop - topped with slices of baby king oyster mushroom, it was buttery and savoury, with a slight smokey fishiness from the mentaiko mayo.
*Chu maki rolls were also exceptional, with the tenkasu tempura bits providing a crunch. Love the midly spicy sauce in the spider roll.
* Sashimi was generously cut to a nice thickness, giving you a good bite - deliciously fresh as expected.
* Anago nigiri - the ocean eel is clean, firm and has less natural oils than the typical river eel. Beautiful flavour and not overwhelmed by sauce.
* Scampi nigiri - beautifully fresh and naturally sweet, has a nice firm texture.
* Miso black cod - delicate but firm white fish, really juicy and has a soft sweet caramelized flavour from the miso.
* Dessert platter - expertly handmade by "minniesweets", features a variety of mochi, white bean and red bean, dusted with an organic matcha powder that has a faint salty flavour.
* The house umeshu is also very refreshing with light fruity hints of plum and honey.
* Fu fu fu Junmai Sake - slightly sweet, clean and goes down really well when it's warm.
The atmosphere is comfortable with a contemporary Japanese interior design. A beautiful courtyard garden looks awesome for the warmer days.
Pretty good location, being very close to the major roads of Princes Hwy and St Kilda Rd, and is also serviced by close tram routes.
Thanks to Ryo and team for the service, knowledge, recommendations and the invite!
This is a cute Japanese restaurant tucked away in St Kilda.
The staff were super passionate about their menu. Our waiter ensured we ordered the right sake according to the type of alcohol we liked; also informing us about each dish which I found amazing making the experience at Fuji Tei that much more special.
The food....wow! Authentic, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Ordering a range of entree’s, sashimi, and main dishes; this place is one I’d recommend to anyone who love Japanese food.
The atmosphere was beautiful with a stunning lantern tree to admire, along with an outdoor eating area overlooking a cute garden.
Highly recommend!!
Found my new favourite Japanese restaurant in our neighbourhood! The sushi was amazing with thick cuts of fish! Super fresh and interesting, not your unusual salmon and tuna. Black cod was beautifully cooked and had an amazing flavour! Lots of interesting sake to choose from. The Restaurant Manager was super friendly and helpful, always had time for a good chat with customers. Can’t wait to come back for more!
Visited for the first time and will definitely go back. Well presented and extremely tasty dishes. The sushimi (tuna, salmon and swordfish) was fresh and just melted in our mouths and the tuna steak was superb. Also has the vege gyoza and the green salad which the most delicious dressing. Wait staff were lovely. Great all round.
Anyone who gives this place less than 4 stars doesn't know what good japanese food is. So glad we found this place, staff are so welcoming and friendly, food there was spot on! If you get the chance, get the brown rice tea, it's so good for those cold days. 100% this will be where we'll be going when we're feeling for some delicious japanese food.
Amazing food. Delightful service. Lovely ambiance. Great value. Highly recommend the mini banquet. Highlights (there are so many) were the oyster shooter, soy duck breast, melt in your mouth sashimi with homemade soy from bonito flakes, grilled black cod with chef’s miso, tiger prawn tempura with homemade matcha salt, homemade black sesame panna cotta and matcha ice cream! Cozy little zen garden in between downstairs dining (for couples and smaller groups) and undercover outdoor area fit for a large party (they seemed to have an upstairs dining area too). We got into town late on a Friday night and although the kitchen/restaurant closes at 10pm, they took our 9.30pm booking without issue and made us feel right at home even as we (barely) finished our desserts around 10.45pm! It was a pleasure and a treat dining there.
I was only just recently admiring some of the amazing dishes to come out of Fuji Tei on instagram so I was excited to receive an invitation to come along and try the menu. Located down a quietish street in the almost Windsor part of St Kilda we turned up to a unassuming little restaurant frontage. Inside however was a different work with colourful art and a wrought iron lantern tree “planted” centrally to the room. There was outside zen like courtyard and additional outside seating for the warmer weather.
We were offered a traditional Japanese greeting as we entered by the mother of the owner and sat down and perused the menu. Plenty of length in that menu and plenty of interesting dishes. The owner, Ryoichi, was a friendly and accommodating and I saw him engage with all the dining
parties in this manner. He had picked out some dishes he wanted to showcase but modified his choices to cater for our own preferences and dietary requirements. My only requirements was that it was yum.
We started with sliced soy duck breast, accompanied with a mustard and duck soy and onion radish. The duck was served cold, it was very tender, the soy was sweet and the whole seeded mustard worked well on the plate.
Next we tried the “Tori karaage fried chicken”, served with a wedge of lemon and mayo. The squeeze of lemon is genius to serve with the battered chicken as it lifts the fried flavour, the chicken was very succulent.
The carpaccio was a trio of fish, tuna, snapper and salmon, drizzled in a yuzu sauce, dotted with caviar and the chefs special basil vinagarette and crispy fried leek. Yum yum yum yum yum!!! Even though the fish is raw, the yuzu dressing gave an almost bbq flavour aftertaste, the pop of the caviar also livened up this dish and the basil vinegarette keeps the mouth feeling fresh.
The Hotate Yaki (Japanese scallop) was served on the shell, the dish had been lightly torched with a flame before serving. This resulted in a smokey, salty dish that was juicy and creamy, the thinly sliced mushroom was a perfect accompaniment.
The Houba Yaki was was served over coals on a mini bbq allowing you to decide whether to eat the meat blue or leave it cooking to your preferred level of time. The fragrant miso paste underneath develops and darkening flavour and teases you, enticing you to eat it sooner rather than later. The sliced meat was so tender. This was my winner of the night.
While I was focusing on beef, KD was treated to a sizzling tuna steak with vegetables in a secret sauce. The flavour was a mix of miso and bbq, it was sweet and yet peppery at the same time. It left a great after burn sensation on your tongue from the pepper without it being too spicy.
The sweet miso cured cod surprised us both, the sweetness of the miso paired perfectly with sweetness of the cod without it being over sweet, the crispy skin was a wonderful crunchy element to the dish.
For desserts we tried the ‘Kuro Goma Panna Cotta’ a black sesame panna cotta dusted with green tea powder and served with matcha ice-cream, the roasted rice flour coating brings out the savory black sesame flavour giving the dish an almost nutty flavour. The matcha ice cream has been adjusted nicely to my Australian palatte, although the matcha flavour was prominent, it had a perfect creamy consistency that was not too sweet nor too savory and had a lovely soft green tea after taste.
The Yuzu nerikiri was a Japanese citrus flavored sweets made out of a white bean paste and was visually stunning. I loved the subtle yuzu and ate
more than my share. Good thing these desserts were both bite sized and a lovely way to finish off this stunning meal.
The freshness of the seafood was obvious and the quality of other ingredients meant that I find it hard to fault anything from tonight’s menu. Our drinks were good too and there is a Tuesday to Thursday BYO option for beer, wine or sake if you thing you have a better wine match at home.
Fuji tei also offers a quick, efficient and filling lunch to suit the local business nearby and happy hour to suit the locals on Friday’s and Saturday’s between 6 and 7pm, $10 cocktails and $5 bottled Japanese beer.
Got take away sushi from this place for lunch. Workers are Japanese which adds to the authenticity of this place. Will return to try the food from the menu, my review may change then as I can't base my review on the takeaway sushi. Watch this space.
To be honest I wasn't sure how my experience here was going to be, I live up the road and haven't really had any urge to visit... until now!! WOW, service - fantastic, venue set up - gorgeous, food - delicious!
I had so many questions and the lovely waiter (who I later found out was owner) was informative and polite. The inside of the restaurant is funky and beautifully decorated. The food was spot on, my only negative was the sparking wine I ordered. for a restaurant like this I would expect an actual bottle rather than a piccolo. The taste of the sparking wine was also not very nice and tasted very cheap. I would remove that from the menu completely.
Will definitely be back to try some other things from the menu.
I got to try Fuji Tei yesterday! I loved everything about this place! The staff were lovely and friendly. The food was also delicious and authentic. Finally some authentic Japanese food near St Kilda Road... I also loved how the food was presented. Reminds me how a lunch or dinner would be presented in Japan!
I ordered the lunch set of nigiri. I was fearing portion sizes would be small. I had experienced this in the past from the old venue Wabi Sabi Garden. When the food came out though even the waiter had to tell me it was a lot of food! I couldn’t believe it! The menu said mini udon but this looked like a full sized udon! Amazing! For $19 it’s definitely worth it since you get more food than paying $20 at Ramen No. 18. Would definitely recommend this place if you feel like having a work lunch that is authentic Japanese.
Thanks for the great experience!
DO: The scallops, sushi and sashimi platter for two and any of the grilled or fried dishes. The tempura is spot on.
DON'T: Know what to order? Ask the friendly staff to recommend something and they'll sort you out.
TIP: Sit outside in the courtyard if it's a nice day or alternatively beside the indoor tree. Really cool.
My first time trying the Japanese cuisine and I was honestly very hesitant, but my goodness! This place was amazing! Quick and friendly service, the food was so tasteful and cooked perfectly! Very clean restaurant, cannot fault it! Definitely a must try and will recommend to everyone I know!
Service is outstanding and the food was really authentic and flavoursom. Such rich flavours that you get quite full on a small amount of food. Will return
Not so often Japanese restaurant wins my 5 but these guys nailed it. Fresh as it can be just in par with other famous Japanese restaurants we've been. was a busy day even on their weekdays so make sure to book ahead. This was our second visit to ensure we get the same experience as the first. And yes, they exceeded our expectations. Some dishes resemble my occasional visits to Tokyo, price.. cheap for the quality you find elsewhere.
We started with some oyster shooters.. damn big piece with their special sauce they use. had to order some more extra after the first 4pcs.
Then came the sashimi, just went for the standard size but was nice and standard to show freshness of the fish.
My partner loves sushi so we went for their chefs omakase 5 kinds sushi, new combination of taste we never expected. basil oil fused with something. The slightly vinegary sushi rice matched and didnt fight at all. Each was explained with or without soy. This made our taste buds alert to make sure to follow otherwise the taste will not be what the chef wants it to be. The highlight among was the white fish. the night we has was a snapper, the waiter kindly explained its texture and the delicate taste, seasoned with salt and lemon. THIS! reminded me of a sushi counter we sat in Tokyo who also told us to enjoy white fish in sushi was with salt and lemon!! This ensured us these guys know what they are talking about.
After our sashimi and sushi came the tempura, we tried their expensive one on the list, Taraba Crab Tempura but after we had this delivered, was accompanied by green tea salt, again this time around in Kyoto we had green tea salt with our tempura there. The chef replicates the true authenticity of how to ensure we eat the way the flavour really is enhanced.
On to our mains we ordered their steak and tuna steak with some rice.
The steak was soft and juicy, we asked for med-rare and came out perfect. Was considering a little rare on our side but this is how beef should be. Med-rare towards the rare.
Tuna steak on the other hand was a punch! the sauce they pour over on the sizzling plate smelt extremely appertizing and almost forget we had so much and made us hungry again!
By here we were full but my partner loves her sweets so we decided to share just 1 plate between us, we ordered the black sesame panna cotta. The sweetness was suttle but enough to help digest after the meal.
Their Japanese sake list is nice and short on point and apparently changes seasonally to adjust.
Why am I writing all this, the manager was a very knowledgeable guy and I immediately recognized him working in another restaurant SHIRAOOI. The manager there is now an owner here. All the staff was well trained and with him behind them, it wont go wrong.
Overall food expectation for the price is insane reasonable, if I ate this in another restaurant it would surely be double of what we spent..
We will be back FUJITEI!!!
Ryo and his amazing team never stop with wow to impress factor! Every dish my husband and I order, and even friends who join us for function meals, is presented with care, making us feel warmly welcomed and well-fed every time!
I am looking forward to bringing my Kyudo sensei and his delegates to Fuji Tei when they come to Melbourne! I have been to a few Japanese restaurants, but this one is one of best, outside of Japan, for modern Japanese cuisine!
First tried already love it so much "Fuji Tei Japanese Restaurant" . Must try their signature dishes, sushi and sashimi combo! So… so… fresh and delicious. 5 kind chef selection sushi was colourful and tasty. And yummy freshness Carpaccio.
Environment : 5*
Service : 5 *
Food : 5*
Had agedashi tofu and the chef selection platter.. it’s really really nice. So fresh and shoyu was excellent. The service was amazing! Really recommended! Especially scampi nigiri and anago (ocean eel) nigiri.
Charming little neighborhood Japanese Restaurant. Came here for Valentines dinner and was seated in Zen garden in the back. Service was friendly, attentive and lovably awkward😊
Food was fresh and flavorsome...probs a step up from Wabi Sabi.
Try the Salmon sashimi and the Prawn Tempura!
This is quality, authentic Japanese food. I dined with a group of native Japanese. It’s a very clean, open, stylish restaurant with a pleasant vibe. Gochisousamadeshita.
Refined simplicity is perfected at Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitei. There was something about our experience dining here that will be memorable for some time to come. I don't often dish out 5 star reviews but I am so happy to have found this gem and can't wait to go back for more! A must try if you appreciate quality produce, authentic flavours and attentive service all in a relaxed setting.
SERVICE: 5/5
One of the most personable, ever attentive service I have experienced outside of Japan. You can really tell the people who work here take pride in what they do. I later learned that the waiter running back and forth taking care of all the customers was infact the owner. Ryo was very friendly, attentive and nothing was too hard for him. Everything he described and recommended lived up to every expectation.
FOOD: 5/5
My most favourite cuisine is Japanese. After reading all the glowing reviews and photos of the food, I knew I had to check this place out. Oh boy, I'm so glad I did!
Here are a few reasons why:
Oyster Shooters -
I LOVE oysters but don't usually order the shooters. Hubby was feeling fancy so he wanted to give them a try. I was surprised as he doesn't even eat roe. It came out soon after and was so nicely presented. The roe looked so fresh and was just glistening at the top of the shot glass. BOTTOMS UP, THAT SHOOTER WAS AMAZING! The Tasmanian oyster was so creamy and went down smoothly with the tangy ponzu sauce. I think I could've easily had 6 of them but then I remembered I ordered a big lunch...Note to self: come back for more oyster shooters.
Mixed (Premium) Sashimi -
Next up was some sashimi. Ordering a sashimi set is on auto pilot for me when I am at a Japanese restaurant. I was quite excited to try it here as the photos I saw looked so good! I always love seeing sashimi plated up. How can sliced raw fish look like art?! Our eyes popped when this plate hit our table, it was so beautifully presented and the portion was larger than we expected. Our waiter explained to us that the soy sauce was a specialty of Fujitei. I nodded along thinking "how special can soy sauce be"??? OMG, YESSS VERY SPECIAL is the answer. It had a sweet undertone and a hit of citrus which was an absolute marriage made in heaven with that amazingly fresh sashimi. We later learned that the sauce had been infused with bonito flakes..genius! They need to bottle that up and sell it. I can't begin to describe how fresh that sashimi tasted, it brought me right back to Tokyo. The white fish and tuna were my faves.
Edamame -
Another staple dish we always order. We were obsessed with eating them while travelling around Japan. The ones at Fujitei were large and on stems, so fresh! Warm, crunchy with a sprinkling of salt, was deeeeelish!
Tempura Moriawase -
Ebi tempura is usually the preferred choice but the white fish sounded yum. Again, it was quite a large portion and presented almost like a tower so I was very delighted!!! The batter was light and crispy, with the juiciest big tiger prawns inside. The white fish just melted, it was cooked perfectly. I had to fight hubby for this. Good choice.
Deluxe Bento Set -
Now THIS had the wow factor and made a big impression. The bento box was massive AND the sides just didn't stop coming...no complaints here. The chef brought it out himself which was lovely to see the man behind all the delicious food we've been having. Bento boxes are perfect for greedy guts like me. You get to try little bits of everything and Fujitei's one is such great value for money - highly recommend it! It looked like a lot of food but we cleaned it all up. I was stoked I got to have more sashimi and tempura. The two best little surprises were the chawanmushi (steamed savoury egg custard) and the black seasame panna cotta, SO SO GOOD! They were both so silky, flavoursome and melted with each spoonful.
DECOR & AMBIENCE: 4.5/5
The frontage is very basic and unassuming. As you first come in and see the bar area, it still doesn't seem like anythimg much. However as soon as you turn the corner into the dining area, you are greeted by a warm and homey space. Pretty lanterns adorn the makeshift tree in the centre of the room. Artwork and warm lighting add to the ambience. The main attraction is definitely the outdoor dining space, perfectly accompanied by a zen garden with luscious bamboo rustling with the wind. It was so inviting that we asked to sit outside - it was a perfect sunny day with a light breeze. The undercover alfresco dining area fits about 12 people - birthday ideas coming to mind.
KID FRIENDLY: Yes, spacious enough and they would be accomodating to all groups
Hidden in an unlikely location un st kilda you find Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitel. You don't expect much until you step in and its beautifully styled with a Japanese theme. Welcomed with a huge smile you knew you were in for a good night. A great menu with some very traditional Japanese dishes. Oyster's a stand out dish and sashimi prepared to a good quality. First time trying Eel aswell. Great night some quality Japanese food
Many may never have heard of this restaurant called Fujitei, though rest assured, you will in the months to come as it truly represents a hidden gem in St Kilda.
The impeccably fresh sashimi, the authentic of preparation and respect for quality ingredients, all made for one of the most traditional and unpretentious Japanese dining experiences we’ve ever come across in Melbourne. Coupled with a lovely Japanese zen garden and friendly, attentive service, this is an eatery you’d come to love!
Japanese is one of our ultimate favourite cuisines and the new management and chefs at Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitei have really amazed us.
We started off with beautifully presented oyster shooters - fresh from Tasmania and a serving of beef tataki that melted in our mouths. Both were topped off with ponzu sauce.
On to the main meals, we ordered the Fujitei Deluxe Lunch Gozen Set with Yakiniku Beef and a Panko Chicken Curry Set. Both sets came with many accompaniments and they are both amazing value for anyone looking for a fulfilling lunch! The beef was cooked to perfection and the crumbed chicken was still super crispy even when topped with the curry.
The overall service was great and it's definitely a place worth checking out!
Oshokuji Fujitei is a renewed Japanese restaurant in St Kilda with a simple desire of sharing their vision of the nature of a Japanese restaurant. The interior is simple and modern, with some traditional elements mixed with geometric shapes. The menu is small but offers many basic dishes in Japanese cuisine.
Since this place changed to the current name and menu, it has be come brighter and better! The quality of the fish and their innovative new menu items are unfound anywhere else. Whether it’s lunch or dinner, there’s always something creative and yummy on the menu. The owner is a very nice guy with the most beautiful smile and all the staffs have the most welcoming attitude. This will be THE Japanese restaurant to dine next year! Can’t wait till my next mind blowing dinning experience at this place!
Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitei is an izakaya-style establishment located in St Kilda, dedicated first and foremost to the art of Japanese eating and drinking, offering a laid back environment for catching up with friends and family with a focus on quality food designed to share in stylish but comfortable surroundings.
Came here for a family dinner. Food was delicious, all the ingredients were fresh and prices and portion sizes were great. The service was wonderful and the staff even gave us a complimentary dessert!
So glad to have found this hidden gem. Place has that retro Japanese ambiance with a beautiful Japanese bamboo garden feeling full of zen! Nice seating. Staff were very welcoming & attentive. Started with Tamago yaki(Rolled Dashi Egg) had that beautiful dashi/mirin taste. Sakura Tako (Boiled then steamed octopus in sweet mirin and soy) was so unique & the Octopus so tender it just almost melts.Hotate yaki ( Hokkaido Japanese scallops, pan seared in Japanese sake dressed and flame torched Mentai(spicy cod roe mayonnaise) had a beautiful creamy texture to it. Fujitei signature carpaccio (Marinated our original blended basil olive oil vinaigrette) had 3kind of sashimi Tuna, Salmon, Kingfish beautifully harmonies with Japanese Yuzu/ponsu citrus.
Also a big plate of Fujitei maki(inside out tuna and salmon sushi roll, coated crispy tempura, topped with ikura(salmon roe)Scampi nigiri Anago(ocean eel) nigiri ,Ikura with sushi rice, Sashimi kingfish & salmon was so amazing. Really high quality salmon roe just melts in your mouth & scampi shrimp reminds me of Kuruma ebi I tried in Japan which was so nice fresh texture & melting creaminess in my mouth. Absolutely fantastic! Dessert kurogoma panna cotta was a perfect transition of Japanese cuisine to western world.
Overall quality ingredients, so attentive service, unique fusion Japanese cuisine without damaging the essence of culinary Japanese basics!! Absolutely loved it & heard this Japanese family who runs the establishment takes extra care to secure the quality! Price very reasonable! I been to other restaurant which has a hefty price tag for similar quality. I think Japanese cuisine wouldn’t get any better than this in Melbourne!!! Overall 4.8*/5
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy

Brand new to St Kilda is another Japanese restaurant, this one located on the quiet and leafy Wellington Street. The site was previously home to local favourite Wabi Sabi Garden, but now under new management, it has transformed into Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitei. The restaurant has a deceptively narrow frontage; the block extends quite a fair way back, allowing room for a separate building behind, separated from the main restaurant by a garden. A function room resides upstairs.
Fuji Tei is a hidden gem of a restaurant in St Kilda. This Japanese eatery prides themselves on serving up the basics of Japanese cuisine but done to the highest standard. They only use the freshest ingredients and the flavours they create are amazing. They also have a beautiful Japanese garden outside which connects to a separate dining area perfect for larger groups. Would recommend trying out!
I love Japanese food… I love it even better when it is beautifully cooked and/or served via traditional methods. Yup.. Oshokuji Dokoro Fujitei, under new management and chef – has gone back to basic. Although each dishes have a modern, fusion look – they all taste pretty damn authentic Mmm…
Hokkaido pan seared in Japanese sake – this was an absolutely great starter! The Japanese scallop was cooked perfectly with the mushroom layered in sweet cheesy goodness.
Beef Tataki – Hubby was very excited with this beautifully prepared seared beef scotch slices which deliciously covered in the special ponzu sauce.
Tempura Moriawase – Having been to Japan and having experienced one of the best tempura in my life – this assortment of tiger prawn, white fish and vegetables tempura was delicious! The batter is extremely light but keeping it nice and crispy.
I have to say this is the best Japanese restaurant I have visited in Melbourne! Fresh and delicious sashimi, well cooked food. Peaceful eating situation will make you love this place! Kind services and friendly staffs. Highly recommend!
ありがとうございます Arigatou gozaimasu!!
Moderately priced Japanese cuisine in quiet St Kilda location. Attentive staff. Food was fresh and tasty!
Amazing, traditional Japanese food. Visited there on a Friday night and it was pretty full. Would recommend booking a table before your visit.
Amazing experience for lunch, Thank you Riyo for the great food selection and fantastic service! Definately will be back!
