Review Europa Cake Shop - St Kilda

Spent $34.50 on dessert that was not done daily as mention the custard had curd and was horrible the rest was dry and pastry crumbled. Worst experience ever and very disappointing.

What has happened to Europa? Nothing good, that's what. We haven't been since before the pandemic and sadly the standards have dropped. Europa used to be our go to place to get something sweet, fresh and delicious , we could never choose so would have one cake instore and get some to take home too. After today I don't think I will be back. We got French vanilla slice, which tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a week. The pastry was soggy and the filling was almost non existent. We also got some mud cake. It was dry af, not edible at all. Sadly we threw our cakes in the bin. I don't know if they've changed owners or just stopped caring but I hope they return to their original high standards. It's such a shame to see a great shop go bad.

Maybe being from interstate I find paying $8.50 for a slice of cheesecake a bit much, especially a small slice. However the lemon cheesecake was the most bland tasting cheesecake I've ever had. There was no zing or even a faint lemon taste. There was no basic cheesecake taste. Even the crust was tasteless. It was dry. Almost like it used to be the plastic display piece & over the years it's started to become soft from being in the window. My friends tiramisu while generous size she commented it was dry & tasteless as well.

Spent almost $20 on four donuts that were terrible. In my friends and also my opinion they were stale. I have been purchasing these from here for years so I called up as a courtesy and was not offered a refund or replacement. Before Covid I purchased these every week usually 6 at a time. You’ve now lost a customer of well over ten years.

Another great cake shop in St Kilda. Came here last week and found myself a lovely selection of sweet treats for the office. The mini lemon meringue pies were nice. Staff on the weekend were nice but a little flustered when it got busy. Prices are reasonable. Like the way they package up your takeaway. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Parking is seriously expensive and the inspectors are vigilant so watch your meter.

$8 for an apricot danish is so way over priced . No prices on any items and after I handed the money over and got my change I realised why no prices are on anything as I assumed it would cost upto $5 . Being a pastry cook for ten years myself I Was hoping we’ll at least it’s going to be delicious but after eating the first bite realised it wasn’t and tasted like it was baked the day before . I’ll never ho back or recommend to anyone . Very disappointing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well this is a case of I wish I read the reviews before sitting down. Yep, not fresh. Dry with cream that's loaded with sugar. I guess fresh cream won't sit as long on the shelf. Don't be fooled by the window display!!!!!!!
Ruby Spencer
$33 for 3 small pieces of cake and a danish. The cakes were very old and had dried out edges. As they were cream and custard desserts I was too concerned about food poisoning to eat them.

Be aware of charges as you can be overcharged. We had five pieces as per photo, two coffee and two chocolate drinks with children and they charged us $72. The prices are not displayed so it is easy charge you more.

Europa is crushing it. And by ‘it’ I mean all my fond memories of Acland St bakeries. Crushed. We dropped in recently for well earned treats before crossing the Strait.

Sadly the cannoli was stale & lifeless with unforgivably soggy pastry. Macchiato was also disappointingly below average. The macarons were okay. Staff suggested 3 popular flavours - creme brulee; raspberry & white chocolate; & vanilla. As good as they sounded, the jam layer of the vanilla was the main point of interest (and there it is: literally the most vanilla thing I’ve ever said).

An update & thorough clean inside wouldn’t hurt. Oh & unless there’s some antler irony that I’m missing...it’s spelt ‘mousse’ cake guys.

Europa feels like an old film noir dame who frocks up every day thinking she’s beautiful only to channel highlights from her heyday while staring melancholically out that cake-laden window.

We have been going to Europa cake shop for at least 10 years. Saturday 29 June 2019 we spent $60 on our favorites only to find half of them were stale. It was a huge disappointment. Won't be coming back anytime soon.
Heidi

Enjoyed this cake shop visit on Acland St. There were sooo many options to choose from and we had an apple crumble and a Ferrero Rocher slice.
Both were delicious, especially the Ferrero Rocher which was a great chocolate kick for the afternoon.
The apple crumble was slighted warmed and I loved it!

When you want to dig in a wholesome chocolate cake, the mud cake is an excellent choice. Picked up the mud cake slice from the Europa Bakery. They have amazing variety of cakes and pastries.

Had a chocolate roulade which was stale and insanely sweet . Pure sugary nonsense at a premium . Furthermore, I felt sick for hours after eating it . Avoid .

I asked the cashier what she recommended out of the custard cheesecake and the raspberry pastry and she told me they were both $7.50. Clearly she didn’t any of the cakes there. I brought the pastry and it tasted old and the pastry was very dense and heavy. Very disappointing.

Europa Cake Shop was a rather nice place for a hang out but the desserts were pretty disappointing; their (plum) donut was tough, dry and yeasty, and the tarts were average and stale. It was great as a tourist attraction (as were other cake shops along the street) due to its strategic location but not as a food destination.

We had the Vanilla Cannelloni with fruits which was good but I had expected fruits inside as well. and the Passion Fruit chili macaron. Lovedddd the macaron.
The staff was sweet.
The Darth Zader
Delicious bakery. The raspberry danish was out of this world tasty. The coffee (long black and flat white) were reasonably sized and well made. Definitely would return in a heart beat.

taste not good and don’t know why so many people to here. Ordered chocolate cheese cake, turns out its a chocolate orange cheese cake.... 😑

Europa is a classic clear cut case of looks better than it tastes. Their meringue is probably my favourite because it’s bigger than my head and a sugar high is inevitable but a lot of their other offerings are inevitably disappointing. It’s such a tempting window display I’ve been caught out many times thinking I’ll just give it another chance but it’s never worth the calories. Try one of the other cake shops in the famed sweet strip

So I came here two days ago and must say it looks pretty adorable and had so much variety with all the cakes and desserts displayed. Also customer service was excellent and nothing to complain about. Only downfall is that its quite pricey. I paid for a carrot cake which wasn't so big for $6.80 and same for the red velvet cake. Foods delicious and would come again another time.

Popped into Europa cakes on Saturday to grab a takeaway cake for a afternoon tea on Sunday. Their vanilla slice was very good and the best I've tasted from the cakes shops in St Kilda. Cakes aren't cheap here but worth paying for the vanilla slice. I've been caught out buying great looking cakes that have tasted average down this strip so I stick with the tried and true.

As a famed cake store down Acland Street in St Kilda - Europa is alright. it's and old school joint which attracts folks with its glass windows showcasing it's finest, spongiest and fluffiest cakes and biscuits over its decor. Not so much a place for it's ambience but for what it's worth its fine as it's more a takeaway spot. My mum wanted something with her coffee so we ended up getting a couple of sweet bites -> almond cake, an apple strudel and some almond biscuits. The strudels pastry was flaky and buttery but the filling was a bit too sweet. Both the almond cake and biscuits were OK too.

Not much positive to say about this cake shop. Ordinary coffee, poorly trained staff, cold Ag bf cramped, pay with cards but there is a surcharge. A few of the cakes like poppyseed cheesecake is good but the pastries and slices were dry,, perhaps stale. At $7.50 for a pastry, it's less than you would expect. However this street is one of Melbourne's main tourist traps, which probably explains the deceptive practice of not displaying any prices, thus embarrass customers into forking outfit the exorbitant total.
The other Europa came shops in Carnegie and Bentleigh are both vastly superior.

Europa Cake Shop is one of Acland Streets famous Cake stores in Saint Kilda. After trying all of Acland Streets Cake stores Europa is by far our favourite. Europa has a huge variety of sweets, bigger than the other stores on Acland Street and their desserts also taste the freshest! The staff are very friendly and take heaps of care when packaging up your delicate desserts to take away. All the desserts are so fresh and delicious. However, the Plum Filled Jam Doughnut was lacking the bursting jam in the middle though which was a bit disappointing!

TIP: Do try the Chocolate Coated Pistachio Baklava! Don't forget to order a Cherry Cheesecake or fresh fruit tarts.
Alfred
Poor service, temp staff with no knowledge of products on sale, not much room and, most importantly, stale cakes with a mouldy after taste. Definitely a tourist trap.

I only visit St Kilda a few times a year but I'm amazed how often cafes come and go. Nice to see this cake shop sticking around for many years. So many cakes! I recommend going inside as it's like stepping back in time.

Not impressed with their service. Went in with a friend and 2 toddlers for a treat, the staff didn't seem interested and didn't know what a "babyccino" is. Then a lady walked out of the kitchen. She told the staff while leaving the cafe to keep the door open despite I requested it closed earlier in case the 2 energetic toddlers unexpectedly run out of the cafe. Her reasons were that it is too warm (15 degrees max outside) and people might think that the cafe was closed (mind you the door was closed when we walked in). We will not return to this cafe due to its negligence of customers' request and their incompetency.

DO: The Chocolate Eclair. It's the largest we've ever seen.

DON'T: Order first. Get a table outside and then order a few items to share next.

TIP: There are 4 cake shops on Acland. Purchase one here and move on. Cake Degaustation is bad said no one ever.

The Swine
The Swine thinks this could well be the choice cakery in Acland Street St Kilda. While other shops have the colour and sheer mass of cake selection, Europa appear to also have the quality. The Swine thinks they smash the vanila slice battle and the coffee isn't as dire as some of the dish water served up at a few of the other cake shop places on Acland.

not much more that i can say than yuk! after experimenting with the cake shops in this renowned cake shop street, i am confused as to how some of these places stay in business. the cakes that i tried here were truly yuk! dry pastry, artificial tasting creams and hard cheesecake. there was very little that i found authentic about this place except the fact that the window is nice and the place has an old world look about it! now i have tried this place, i am moving on! won't be back sorry! (and not to mention how expensive this place is for what you get!)

This is my last review on Zoamato. I am frustrated with all its glitches and technical issues.
Europa is a marvellous cake shop that has been in Acland St for years - ever since I started going there in the mid-80s.
It's Mittel Europa in Melbourne with its Polish/Jewish/Central European cakes.
My favourite has always been the poppyssed cake with its raisins and rum infusion.
The coffee is nothing special, but it's the cakes that make it worthwhile.
Ciao....
Helen
Oh wow. What an amazing choice of cakes, slices, chocolates, donuts, danishes, pastries, rumballs, desserts and coffee. Eat in or take away. I can never just buy one item but end up getting several delicacies. Mmmmmmmm delicious!

The cakes look yummy but tasted overly sweet and dry. And the service is very bad, the staff is unfriendly and rude. I would not go back again.
Byron's Vanilla Slice Blog
In one word: Custardy.
Europa Cakes was my last vanilla slice from the 'Big Four' cake shops on Acland Street, and arguably the best on the street. Notably the portion size and freshness of the ingredients were the highlight here. The custard was just that; custard. It was creamy, full of vanilla extract and a lovely smooth texture, with a hint of egg. The pastry was delicately crisp, coated slightly with white chocolate to ensure the pastry doesn't absorb the moisture of the custard - a first on my travels. A generous dusting of icing sugar was just enough to ensure the correct sweetness against the pastry. An altogether lovely slice from start to finish.

4 x cakes pieces = $28, if you're looking for cheaply made desserts do not bother with Europa, however, by simply window shopping the bakery you know that cheap will not exactly apply here.

The poppy cheese cake was by far my favourite, I'm a sucker for anything poppyseed so it was a win win - the freshly baked cheese cake mixed perfectly with the poppy with the subtle blend of alcohol (rum perhaps?) and fruit. The two flavours worked perfectly together and made for a fantastic combination.

The mud cake was what you would expect, rich, dense, flavoursome and simple - though when it comes to the mud, it is my opinion that this is what you should expect!

The fruit tart was delicious, however, out of the 4 it seemed to be the most 'standard' of the lot - still great!

The blueberry custard Danish was the best Danish I've ever eaten, the pastry was perfectly prepared and the berries fresh with not one tasting 'off' - consistency and flavour'

Europa Cake shop is on Acland St in St Kilda and on a school holiday Tuesday there should be heaps of people at this place. Now I wondered why the place was so empty only with a few just wanting takeaway coffees and cakes. With so many cake shops in St Kilda I wondered if the French vanilla slice ($7.50 per piece). That and green tea ($3.50 per pot). The cakes on display look interesting but do they taste that way? The older woman that served me had a really sour look on her face. That is a no no. She might be the manager. One girl came to drop off her resume and she was asked about her coffee making skills. The girl said no and was immediately rejected. The other two staff were really friendly though and they were happy to serve me and other people. The shop is supposed to be good at making cakes everyday. But my French Vanilla slice seemed like it was storebought. The pastry was so hard to cut through even with a steel knife. It was also sickly sweet from all that jam. The one at Monarch was really good though. They managed to have this really nice creamy texture and they make their own stuff. But not this one. This ones cream was really artificial and after a few bites I didn't finish it. The tea came in a small pot and was just ok Rating: 9/20- meh never again. If I had to choose I would have chosen Monarch like all the other customers have.

Everything is stunning, but did they really make everything you see today & yesterday? How long ago was this stuff made? Surely they didn't make it all fresh? And with 'Le Bon' the creamed things aren't in the fridge.

Europa Cake Shop - St. Kilda, Melbourne. If you have any desire to go on a strict diet or to curb sweets somehow, the plain old advice would be to simply not to go around this area of town at all. In fact, just walk to the other side of the road or better yet, avoid this stretch of Acland street altogether. This is the gastronomical equivalent for window shopping with several types of cake shops selling various lots of sweets and even coffee is temptation so overcomes the temperance.

Let's say though, that you stop and glance at one of the various shopfronts, it houses all sorts of freshly made, home-style sweets which has a massive range that ought to appeal to at least one sort of taste in each person. Whichever one you choose, it could well be a Roman version of a Parisan-style bakery. Since this review is on the page for "Europa Cake Shop", obviously the choice was here.

Staying in a flat a few streets away, I went exploring with my parents one day in the nearby Acland Street area. Aside from the several cake shops, there is plenty more to choose from and is a foodie's haven. The size of the place will vary, but somehow there will always be a few tables to sit at at the very least - Europa is like that. The three of us stopped in and thought to get a variety of pastries to share for the next couple of morning's breakfasts - an easy option, and the apartment had accommodated for a coffee plunger which made the second part a lot easier.

It has already been mentioned about the sheer variety of options here, and it is modest compared to one of its neighbours. I mostly stayed out of it, allowing my parents to make the decision. They were all to happy to, and were even discussing what to get making sure that there was variety in the selection. Ultimately the selection of items was one each of chocolate canolli, blueberry danish, mixed berry cheesecake, mille feuille, fruit and nut slice, macadamia tart and poppyseed roll. The only one that I did not end up trying was the poppyseed roll. My only fuss is somehow I missed out on coffee here; next time as always.

Service there was really good, quick and lovely. It is all you would want in a cake shop, simplicity at its finest.

From what I had though, each one was delicious and well-sized. It was able to be divided between four people (plus a baby) to get a sample taste of it all. They weren't all done at once, mind you. The best one was the chocolate canolli, with a dark chocolate center and crunchy, buttery pasty. Danishes are often a great choice from a bakery, and this time around was no exception particularly with an abundant amount of fresh blueberries on top. Cheesecake is nice as well, with a mixture of berries helping mix up the textures and flavours some more. Millefeuille has always been a great favourite, and there was a bit of twist on the classic pastry with some berry mixture on top; as always, rich and creamy with an abundant amount of custard in the middle. Then the macadamia tart, with the distinct flavour and aroma of the bush food, was a pleasant entry finishing it all off with the fruit and nut tart adding some degree of freshness to it all.

Again, as there is no shortage of great cake shops around the area it will definitely be worth coming back down some time in the future. One of the benefits of the quantity of options is that each time something else can be ordered, and new items will constantly be popping up. Europa Cake Shop is absolutely worth trying.

$7.5 for an average piece of vanilla slice is ridiculous. Nothing has prices, otherwise I never would have ordered. Will not return. If you're in the area - there are amazing bakeries to be found - this is just not one

Cakes are appealing but not so much after you get a taste... cakes were stale and bland.. A surcharge for dining in..? Not sure if serious.. What a joke

A sight I have not seen matched!. I visited this shop 20 years ago while a student at Monash. I could not believe the selection and have never found a shop that has so much to offer from around the world! I'll probably never get the opportunity to go to Australia again, but I'll always recommend it as a must see for travellers! I still dream of the front window, two decades later!
How absolutely beautiful!
Marissa Marques, London, Ontario, Canada

This is a nice cake shop to go to if you are served by the right person, most of the girls are nice and only one or two of them know how to make coffee, the difference in skill and service greatly differs here, I was once served by an angry older woman who didnt seem to have much time for her customers.

Worst Cakes ever. How ridiculous that a shop that specialists in cakes does it so bad. Fake cream, stale, awful. Obviously not busy enough to turnover the different types of cakes therefore they are probably two weeks old. You won't be seeing us again that is for sure!

Delicious cakes! Pleasant, friendly staff who go the extra mile for you! I tried the Vanilla slice and it is definitely the best on Acland street! I will definitely come here again.

I got the cheesecake it had no flavor. Not sweet. I asked for something else as a replacement as I didn't like it. And they said no. I told them I'll have to go home and feed it to my dog cause I don't like it. They said we can't do anything about it.

BAD EXPERIENCE. Sorry guys, unfortunately sorry to say that they have the worst customer service ever, went there a few times to buy some rumballs and brandy snaps , i keep coming back coz their brandy snaps is yummy.....but i dont think i will ever come back again.....ever....i have enough with their service...., i think its because the shop is so popular , until it reach the point that they dont pay any attention to their customer service skills at all.......

Dissappointing. Hadn't been to Acland St for years and was excited to see Europa Cake Shop was still there. I bought a pear and apple tart and a strawberry fruit flan. Took them home for a treat. They were $6:00 each. The tart was mouldy and the flan's jelly had a weird hardened skin and was tasteless. A waste of $12:00!
GTO
True true, looks alright but taste really bad. Cold, not fresh, too sweet. Please go further on the street and you might get better choice. Never come back again!
Louise
Looked really nice, with a great selection. Unfortunatly all three cakes/slices were stale, and one was labelled incorrectly. Disappointing. Won't be back.
Glutenshmooten
There’s not a huge variety, but they do have a large selection of gluten free macaroons and some gluten free cakes to choose from.
