Review Bala's Cafe - St Kilda

My fav restoring was closed on that day, on the way to the beach, I walked in for a random dinner, Where I had never tried before. I did not expect good food here, you know it’s like fast food style! 2 curry and rice cost about $18, not cheap to be honest in a fast food restaurant, that’s OK. But my tummy was upset after the meal. Will never come back again and never try curry again.

We've eaten here regularly for many years and are never disappointed. Good quality and affordable food and nice staff.

Would not recommend getting any ready-to-go veggie curries here. Pumpkin and Tofu curries Loaded with sugar to the unbearable point. Pumpkin curry (red one) especially

Been going here for over a decade but haven’t been for a while since I moved further away. DID NOT DISAPPOINT. it was even BETTER than I remember. The lamb rogan josh had a beautiful smokiness. Meat was tender but still with chew. Chicken curry was flavourful with only subtle heat and generous portion of meat. Only had I tiny piece of veg which was a bit disappointing considering I mentioned picking it because it had veg. But it was tasty. Vege samosa was divine with a beautifully crumbly pastry and not your average spice blend in the filling. Still tasting the lovely spices now as I write this. I’m so full but I want more! What does that tell ya?!

A very good Indian restaurant, been coming here for years. Curry always delicious. Meat very tender. Best curry in melbourne.

My favourite Indian Thai place, I drive 20minutes just to pick this up. Highly recommend, great value curries for great prices.

It's pretty good for value for your meal, big portions when you do the rice with 2sides meal deal. Mango Lassi is really good and the Roti was fresh and tasty.
Casper
Very good hearty food at a great price. Would recommend coming here if you are in the area. They have a good range of veg and meat options available. Try the yellow tofu curry and butter chicken as these are my two favourite dishes here. I always get a roti as well whenever I come here and it always tastes great. I highly recommend the mango lassi here, as it is one of my favourite drinks of all time. The servings here are very generous and are great value! I often have enough for lunch the next day.

#VEGAN FRIENDLY #<br/>Bala’s has been around for many years. There is a mixture of ready to eat meals and made-to-order stir fry’s. I always go for the stir fry. The veggies and tofu are cooked to perfection, and you have a choice of white or brown rice.

Used to be great takeaway.<br/>Full of flavour and large variety.<br/>Went there today for takeaway.<br/>All we could taste was SUGAR. Lots of sugar.<br/>No spices, no flavour, just sugar.<br/>Bala's the current owners have lost the plot.<br/>So disappointing.

Went here on the weekend and was very excited to find this kind of restaurant/cafe. Ordered butter chicken, rice and roti - two days later and I’m still suffering from food poisoning. I was there at 1pm on a Sunday, wouldn’t have imagined anything was wrong with the chicken. My vegetarian friend also asked for a tofu yellow curry. Instead was mistakenly given a chicken curry. This was quickly resolved, however can’t say the same for food poisoning.

Ordered from Uber Eats and was really surprised and really happy with the delivery. The food was delivered sizzling hot. Ordered a Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Rogan Jodh and Garlic Naan. The food can be branded average.

I haven't been there in 5 years. It used to be a good cheap curry, now it's horrible. It's an embarrassment to indian cuisine. I couldn't finish my my meal, which is a rarity.

Fast service, great food at very reasonable price. I had the Thai Chicken salad which was very tasty. Good options for if you are on a healthy diet.

Delicious..delicious...delicious..something for the whole family. The vegan curry puffs & all dishes we had were amazing.Don't walk by this unassuming restaurant when in St Kilda.

I have been to Bala's numerous times over the last 3 years since I moved to St Kilda. I was hardly ever disappointed. However in the last 6 months or so the quality has gone down rapidly. I just had some Brown Rice with Yellow Chicken Curry and Bean Tofu vegetables and it was pretty bad. The only good thing was the Yellow chicken curry but even that tasted like it's been in the heating box for days. By far the worst was the Brown rice...How hard is it to cook rice? It was totally overcooked and therefore not edible... Since you get rice with almost every meal here that is a massive disappointment.<br/><br/>Like I said, I used to love this place. My last experience was really bad but I gave it another shot today...Awful. If it wasn't for the Yellow Chicken Curry it would have been 0 stars.

Bala's has been around for ages but their food is pretty mediocre. Curries taste very standard and westernized, no authenticity to them. HOWEVER, they have THE BEST CHICKEN CURRY PUFFS EVER. Something about the filling, almost likes yellow/green chicken coconut curry filling that is so juicy. I'd be surprised if it wasn't made on site because it's just fantastic. Decent for a $2.60 price tag, it's not too tiny. Been bringing friends and buying them curry puffs every time they meet for coffee in the area. Only thing I buy from there now.
Food Etc.
I don't get this place. They have been here so long. The food is average. Curries made from packet curry paste - the cheapest variety too. Interesting choices. It hadn't really changed since I was last here over 10 years ago. Saturday was a hot day, and eating in with added heat from the kitchen wofting into the dining area made for an uncomfortable experience. My sister loves this place, but I think that may be for sentimental reasons more than anything else.

I took about 5-10 minutes for two ladies to figure out what we wanted to order.. Don't know why I bothered. Food is ok, the portions are small for the price....but not worth the wait!!!
Kate Derry
The woman at the till had no idea what she was doing. They charge 20c extra per item to dine in. The dim sim was cold and flavourless and the samosa was oily. The restaurant has a nice view though.
What_kate_ate
Best steamed dim sims ever...it's the main reason I keep coming back here. The other food there is a bit pricey and I agree with other reviewer about charging for sauces - not good.

A really rude staff member (I think owner) taking orders, and a Pad Thai with 2 small pieces of chicken. Overall all food ordered was poor quality and overpriced for what it was. I'm dissappointed because our office has been buying lunch here for years. Won't be back sorry.

I've been a regular for 20yrs,today was my last visit.<br/>My order had sooooo much curry it was a soup<br/>My gf order was wrong<br/>We were overcharged<br/>The staff are ordinary<br/>This business. changed 6 months ago and it shows!what a shame!what a disappointment !
Cactus Anderson
The curry tasted okay, but we left with a bad taste in our mouths due to the grumpy and rude staff behind the counter. Expensive for a food court style experience.
Craig Missell
Not sure if Bala's has changed hands! The food was cold, under prepared and oily. Another restaurant crossed off the list, sad!
Alexholmes987
Nothing good to say.. - My friend asked for a vegan option and they didn't know what that meant.<br/>- Expensive.<br/>- Terrible curry, tasted like ready made sauce.<br/>- Only 3 peices of very dry chicken in my "thai green curry"<br/>- Stale roti bread
Sara Elizabeth
Pretty terrible curry here

Cheap & delicious food. The vegetarian samosa and garlic roti are some of the best I have ever eaten. Bala's is cheap and has such a great vaierty of vegetarian and meat dishes - something for everyone. It's hard to get take-away for one person and still be able to enjoy a variety of dishes and Bala's caters for this!
Cam
Expensive and sometimes rude. Food ok, but they charge you for every little thing right down to sweet chilli sauce. The staff, depending who is working, can be really quite rude.
Linda
Food always great beautiful flavours, the lady behind the counter is rude but you can look past that because of the good, reasonably priced, healthy options.
Ry
It isn't fancy but its well worth it for the prices of the food.
Vicki Brous
Standard of food really down.. Had takeaway from Bala's this past week, and everything tasted bad. The quality of the food has really gone downhill and this was a real shock as had not been there for about 12 months. Sadly used to be great!
Sandra
Terrible and rude service, food was nice but was wrecked by service, must be new owners as standards have slipped since I last visited 5 years ago. Not child friendly, was given a dirty look as a came with my young child.
Bex Harris
A great selection of Thai & Indian currie's & stir fry's right in the heart of St Kilda. Choose from a plate of 2 veg or meat curries with brown or white rice from the pre prepared selection or a cook to order dish. Both will leave you full and very satisfied. Tasty, fresh & great value. A little cramped inside but takeaway is also available.
String Of Events
Great value for money.. I love cheap food that tastes good and this definitely ticked those boxes. I'm also looking for tasty cheap indian food because a lot of indian takeaway is rubbish.
TristanG
Good value, and the indian isn't bad for an "instant" (ie buffet) style eatery.
Lynda
Best curry take away I've had in years - the massaman beef curry is a MUST!
Nikki O
Good cheap eat
Ty Hancock
Very average at best! Thai beef salad was terrible value as a take away dish, Pad Thai was only marginally better. Technically I'd give this meal 2 stars but as it was take away they get a bonus star.
Jonz
Dropped their standards. They used to be good but now they taste and present like food court food.
