Good venue for a group to grab a meal of bunny chow (lamb/mutton curry in 1/4 loaf of bread) or a solid beef curry with rice.
Decor is basic, service is polite, efficient and friendly. My beef curry arrived quickly, but had been slow-cooked and was full of flavour.
Got an iced mocha and a chicken avocado crepe, the servings were huge and they were delicious :) Will like to be back! Service was nice too, don't know why this place has copped so many negative reviews. Limited food options though.
Bunny wow!!
First time at Cafe Vero and the cafe itself is nothing special. The tables are at different heights pushed together creating a bit of a school canteen feel. They do the general slad and sandwich lunch fare. I had come specifically for one dish and one dish only ..the bunny chow. I had no idea what this was until a few days ago when my friend introduced me to this south african delight. It is essentially curry in a hollowed out bread bowl the curry was fantastic rich, thick and with a massive chilli kick. The lamb was nice too it hadnt been slow cooked but wasnt particularly tough either. Ill be back for this dish for sure!
We had the most fantastic meal, Bunny Chow!!! The staff were ever so friendly, management were very interactive and the cafe itself had a lovely atmosphere. We are definitely coming back!!!!
Lovely cafe! Great value. Really enjoyed the coffee. The staff were also very friendly. Will go back.
Great old fashioned breakfast!. I loved the big breakfast here. An old fashioned, not fancied up and ruined breakfast! Also, they had the footy on the TV which was awesome! Will go again/
Bunny chow. My goodness my Husband has been telling me about this bunny chow for some time and then asked me to go and try it, well my taste buds are still tantalised some 9 hours later. I enjoyed the whole experience of using the bread to eat the dish with, the spices were perfect, the beef was incredibly tender and all in all the whole experience was very exciting. Thank you to the wonderful owner who deserves incredible credit for this....I will be back again and again and have told my hubby the only condition he can go back is if he brings me takeaway bunny chow.
Now that's how you make a steak sandwich!! I thought I would try somewhere new, found an offer in the entertainment book and Caffe Vero was the lucky candidate. Lucky me!!! It was Big, juicy, tasty and on Turkish bread...perfect. I added the bacon and egg...just awesome...I'll be back...often!
Best breakfast for a while. I bought a groupon voucher to use here for breakfast and was pleasently suprised and just how good this place is.
I had been here with the previous owners and was not that impressed but i can tell you I would highly recommend the food and service and will be returning without the voucher this time.
We had the full b'fast and the vegi b'fast. I love the fact that they cater to the vegi and you don't just loose the meat on your plate and still pay the same price. Quality of food was excellent and the coffee was great.
Ordered some fruit toast for the kids and again you get value for money, not some run of the mill cheap fruit toast but the good stuff from Lawley's packed full of fruit and with walnuts. Homemade jam topped it off and shows that the owners really care about quality and the product they put out.
Kid friendly, big TV that we were even offered to put shows on for the kids and free WiFi.
The owner made a point of checking if we were happy with everything, normally you are shunned and made to feel cheap for using a voucher. we even got a $10 voucher for a return visit, with or without this I will be coming back for a second serve of Caffe Vero
Super Fast!. Had an Entertainment book voucher for one free main meal so went this morning for breakfast. Ordered multigrain toast, poached eggs, tomato, mushrooms & avocado with coffee. The food came out extremely fast with decent sized servings & then our coffees arrived. The food was delicious & the coffees perfect. Very happy customers!
Unlimited tabasco. Sauce and a good full brekkie = happy
One of the best causal breakki place. Went to walk around subi the other day and came across this cafe.. thought we did give it a try! The menu isn't like extensive but I'm sure you can find something you like. I had the full breakki, which is extremely filling!! The eggs were cooked to perfection! and the potato cake was sooo yummm!! My bf had this mushroom one.. also of excellent quality!! The hot choc was also good =D
I love the back area.. they even have a TV there... and Free Wifi! The whole atmosphere is just so relaxed.
will definitely return!!
Go for the Bunny Chow!. The bunny chow is fantastic - half a loaf of bread hollowed out and spicy lamb and potato curry is spooned in on the inside. Be careful though as it is hotter on some days than others (taste wise)., but the friendly South-African owner will probably warn you before you order it anyways!
Awesome Bunny Chow! Best in the business!! Great place, good people! Well done Craig & Mike!
Good friendly service. Perfect for a fresh, made to order, inexpensive lunch roll to take away.
Amongst the BEST. Excellent location.
Excellent ambiance.
Excellent coffees.
Friendly and personal service.
Menu well varied.
Reasonably priced.
All the best, Jo & Suzie
Amazing food with super friendly staff. If you want to spice up your life try The south African lamb bunny chow (Doesn't contain bunnies)
Generous Lunch Rolls. Once a dark unappealing bland coffee shop, Michael has turned this well located Rokeby spot into a modern appealing cafe. The once unused rear courtyard is now a pleasant spot for a quiet lunch. The roll to order are very generous, bread always very fresh and feelings galore to choose from. They also make an good coffee.
Had coffees and lunch here many times and always really happy with the food and atmosphere. Quite laid back, generous helpings, non-pretentious. The 'bunny chow' (not rabbit) is a massive favourite curry amongst colleagues.
3.5 stars. We had a bit of a mixed experience here, there were some things I liked and some things I was a bit wary of. So we ordered a fresh juice, a creamy pasta dish, lamb shank with mashed potato, and a chicken mushroom risotto. The "pasta of the day" was actually spag bol, although when my friend was like "ohhh, maybe not", the lady behind the counter was immediately asking what pasta would my friend prefer. My friend was after a creamy pasta, so the lady told her "no problem".
The juice was made up and came out quite quickly, they also gave us tap water for the table straight away, and then we waited for around for another 30-40minutes (not exaggerating either) and started to wonder about our food, because some of the staff were busy cleaning the area behind the counter. One of the waitresses came out to apologise and said our food would be out in 5-10mins, there's a bit of a delay because everything was turned off. So I'm really not sure what happened behind the scenes, although when the food came out, it was as if the pasta (in particular) had been freshly cooked instead of reheated (as you would expect in a cafe), it wasn't bad, and maybe she was just taking a while to make that pasta from scratch? Who knows. And they were apologetic several times about the delay, so it's hard to hold a grudge, especially since I'm not sure if they were at fault specifically or not..
The food was surprisingly complex considering the (relatively) decent price and the fact that the cafe seemed only basic on first impression. There was lots of fresh herbs in my risotto, the lamb shank was slow cooked and tender.
The staff worked hard with cleaning up since it was towards the end of the day, and I think (no idea of course) that they probably run a clean kitchen. However, there are aspects that have been neglected over time. For example, the pictures hanging on the wall over the tables were accumulating greasy dust around the tops, which is easily forgotten although can leave a bad impression.
While most pre-made foods were inside cabinets, there was a cake stand on the counter where flies could perch on top of the food (and while it wasn't their fault, there were a lot of flies since it was a hot day and their cafe is quite open). The cafe was kind of hot, they had a few big fans running on high although no aircon.
Overall, friendly staff and decent food, the place could use a little bit of an overhaul although seemed fine overall.
We had a wonderful lunch at Cafe vero. The wait staff were professional, helpful and friendly. As for the kitchen and the food WOW, what we had was spectacular, thanks you!
