Review Moonstar - Sunbury

Greg Brooks
I came across the restaurant by chance as we where walking around the Sunbury shopping area. I had the Chicken Green Curry with vegetables all where beautiful and fresh, my wife had the Seafood Rice Noodles said it was also delicious. The for dessert i had the fried Ice Cream my wife had a Banana fritter and ice cream all where yummy. Next Time in Sunbury, we know where to go for lunch or dinner.

Very good and friendly service, but overall I was a bit disappointed overall as the food was ok - a bit hit and miss, but quite expensive for what we got. For over $50 per head I would have expected better. Might select certain take away items in the future, but probably wouldn't dine in again.

0 if possible. Couldn't be more disappointed! Ordered 'crispy skin duck' with 'plum sauce' Duck pieces were from at least 3 different ducks - only 2 pieces were from the same animal. It was deep fried 😱, tough as old boots and tasted stale. The meat/tendons were totally disintegrated off the bone and one leg (yes, there were 2 leg pieces) even looked like it had the end chewed off it. Even poultry that has been deep fried for 10-15 mins does not disintegrate that quickly with a beautiful tan skin. It looked and tasted like leftovers from previous meals recooked to try to hide this fact. 'Sauce' looked and tasted like flavored fat drippings poured over the top 3cm deep in the bowl so skin was soggy. We were told that's how they do it. Asked for replacement one with sauce on the side - were refused. Left it on their counter as nobody offered to come to table to see what our complaint was. They offered for us to take away and we said we didn't want it. They brought it back to our table 5 mins later after it stayed on their front desk. Asked for a refund - were refused. Asked for a dessert as compensation - were refused. Asked for hostess name upon leaving. Usually staff either give it our say they don't give their name. This one questioned why I wanted to know - so I could complain to her boss of course and name her in this review which I told her walking out in disgust. She was an auburn/blonde Vietnamese woman. Totally put me off my meal which I immediately stopped eating. My first warning should have been the little slow flying insects that accumulate around rotting fruit in summer (one of which landed in my bowl 🤢) Totally disgusted and angry as my 4 children all under 7 were eating the other dishes which looked ok but after seeing the duck made me question everything coming out of that kitchen. Don't even get me started on the toilet - RH side toilet had brown toilet paper sitting in it with black mould growing in top. Passage to toilet had piles of old grimy cooking items sitting on trolleys. Restaurant looks beautiful on the outside but OH&S and food safety practices just from our meal were enough to get the place closed down! Would not recommend unless new owners were in place!

Been here multiple times now. Very tasty food. I’m extremely picky with pho and this place did not disappoint

Food was average but the location and staff were amazing!!!

We spent nearly $70 on meals that didn’t come close to satisfying 4 individuals. There was no value for money. Furthermore we paid a whopping $26 for a fried barramundi that was inedible- it went in the bin. Tasted extremely fishy and the only edible dish was the vegetables out of everything we bought. A total waste of money and very disappointed overall.

0 stars!! 🤮 Absolutely disgusting food (if you can even call it food). I ordered chicken with black bean stir fry for my husband and pho for myself and daughter as she is sick with a cold. Now we are all sick with diarrhoea and we all didn't even finish a third of our meals! Everything was so oily, including the soup. Vegetables were undercooked and the chicken had weird large orange dots on it. Delivery took one hour instead of the stated half hour. I feel absolutely disgusted that I even ate some of the food, it was a disgrace and I will never ever order again. I do not recommend!!! EdIT: 24 hours later still pooping!

Went with a group of 11 people. I ordered from the Stir Fry section of the menu where you had a choice of protein or Vegetable then a sauce also had the option of Chow Mein and Bird's nest which was $2 extra for Crispy noodles. The Prawn where cooked to perfection some of the vegetables were too soft for my liking I like my Veggies crunchy also there was no asian vegetables The Bird's nest was terrible hard to describe but I would say it tasted tinny I to get them change the noodles to chow mein noodles but as the dish had too much liquid most of them where soft. Will never go there again even though the lady was nice when I complained about the bird's nest

I don’t normally write review unless it’s exceptionally good or at the very other end. Food looks good until you tasted it... the saltiest bowl of Pho I’ve ever had. Can’t finish my bowl even though I already added extra water to dilute the soup... The cashier didn’t give back my changes, it’s $2 but I can’t even bother to ask for it. Not gonna come back.
Disappointingly generic. I really like Vietnamese, but the menu is written in English only so it's hard to tell whether you're going to get Vietnamese, Chinese or some blend of the two. Granted, they describe themselves as Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine (which is a little like describing your food as Italian and Spanish...). We've only been here twice, once for pho which was pretty flat and lacking zing. We returned again and I ordered what I thought would be bún, but turned out to be just vermicelli with noodles, cooked vegies and sauce (think 80s style country Chinese food). Partner had the beef spicy soup which was delicious. But it's so hard to predict what you're going to get that I think we're unlikely to return. Service is good and friendly so I do hope they update their menu as we'd love a good Viet place in town.

Just a drop in, no prior research. Place is old school and felt a little retro. Entree spring rolls came out fast and were tasty. While waiting for mains I decided to look at reviews. These were mixed but not many recent ones.
Service was OK, however, would have liked the traditional Vietnamese offering of tea and water. Was not at all busy on the Monday. Main came out by itself an waited for rice to follow.
Main was not huge for $17, the meat was tender enough. Overall the dish was average. Fried rice similar, just OK. You would probably expect to pay upwards of $35 per head. I would give it 2.5 stars but as that wasn't an option I rounded down.

I've never written a review, but I just had to say, I had the worst dining experience of my life at this restaurant and would highly advise people to go elsewhere.

Lovely presentation and tasty food. Well priced. Good customer service. Will definitely be back. A trip down memory lane with the trip to the toilet. 😀

Our regular place to go for dinner and we have never been disappointed. Food is always fresh and lovely, and the staff are great! Keep up the good work :-)

This restaraunt has potential but falls short. The chicken Pho while tasty, is served without the traditional garnishes such as lemon, bean sprouts, thai basil and chilli. These garnishes are what make Pho so satisfying.

Twice in a row now food has been inedible. Last nights reached a new low. Fried rice was full of rice 'clusters', was extremely cold (is microwaving fried rice - unsuccessfully - standard?) and gluggy. The rest tasted like jars of pre-prepared sauce had been poured onto reasonable fresh produce. However, the lettuce was nice!

I never have said never....... until now. Never again! Got my plate of food was not told the plate was piping hot and of course burnt my hand. Told the staff who just smiled and offered no apologies. Their remedy was to offer me a seat under a fan

This resaurant is not a place to have a romantic meal but the food is really good. The quality of the beef is outstanding for the price. the pho was disappointing however. I will be back.

Great food, friendly service and reasonably priced. Fast and friendly service. Tasty, hot food. Cosy and unpretentious atmosphere. The prices are right. I've been there twice and will surely go again. The only negative for me was that the food was all very, very sweet tasting. The people I was dining with, however, didn't share my opinion.

Chicken pad Thai is the BEST!!

The man and I had a lovely dinner here. Lemongrass and chilli chicken was great as was the Mongolian pork but a little too sweet for me.

Birthday dinner with family. Just had a wonderful meal at this great little restaurant. Celebrated my birthday with family and was not disappointed. We let the staff choose the menu for the nine of us and they did it admirably. Price was very reasonable. Food lovely and freshly cooked and served piping hot. Not a complaint from any of us. Highly recommended.

New name needs new food. Just ate at the Vietnamese restaurant , terrible cheap mostly frozen rewarmed food all the seafood came out of packets it was like a really bad old school Chinese dinner, won't be going back

I like it.. I don't know why everybody is comparing this to the old restaurant. This is a different business with a different name. Maybe the fact the other was a little cheaper is why it went out of business. The prices of this new restaurant Moon Star are still very reasonable.
I like Moon Star and think its satay is fantastic. They also do a yummy vietnamese coleslaw.
I wish this new Sunbury restaurant all the very best.

New owners, new name, higher prices. Have tried twice, food poor, won't be going back.

Under New Management. Sunbury Inn is actually under new management and called something else now. And that makes me sad. Cause Sunbury Inn was great. Tasty, fresh and reasonable prices. The new? Yuk I'm afraid and insanely expensive, especially when the 'locals' know what the previous owners charged for the same meals. Very disappointed and won't be going back. :(

Horrible. The food was tasteless. The portions were very small but I guess that is a positive since there was no flavor.

I've been to heaps of viet places around Melbourne and I went to this one to get a pho , well it was I'm sure boiled water poured into a bowl that's how bad it was the food is basic and none flavorsome service also is average , the atmosphere is boring.

Great Food. Food is very good at SIV - best asian food in Sunbury - service is also very very good.
Typical asian urban restaurant, no fancy setting, quite basic and atmosphere could be improved. But food is Great

Food Was good, fresh with great flavour, friendly and prompt service. Atmosphere was lacking and not overly cheap. Overal pleasant dining, I'll be back.

Good fresh food. The food is lovely, very fresh, crisp veggies, nice meat cuts and the food comes out quick, the prices are great too - lunch special is excellent! The restaurant itself is small and you have to go out the back corridor past the kitchen to use the bathroom and so this is great for a quick bite or take away. We have taken the kids a number of times and they love the rice and lemon chicken, but it can get noisy in there due to the size of the restaurant. Their takeway is very fast too.

Meh.... Just returned from 3 weeks in Vietnam and was craving some Viet. food. Unfortunately I didn't find it here, it's very western'ized and lacking flavor...and wasn't as 'cheap' as everyone had made it out to be...

Looks like im still searching for some real Vietnamese food in/around Sunbury

Cheap and Good. It's a great price for the meal you get. Fairly empty every time I've been there, so good if you don't like crowds :P Nicely presented meals. But if you're going to EFTPOS the order has to be over $25. The only negative thing, is there isn't a great ambience.
