Review Diamond Palace Chinese Restaurant - Sunshine

Aaron Ottobre
A nice Chinese restaurant. Food was really tasty and service was good. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the roast pork we ordered was quite dry and tough. I generally expect meat from Asian places to be a bit on the dry and tough side, but this was notably so. The sauce it was in was absolutely delicious though!! Roast duck was quite nice too. San Choy Bao was really tasty too! I also ordered a mushroom soup which tasted just fantastic!!! :) Also of interest, me and my partner were given two different menus lol!!

The food was okay, however I wouldn't eat it again. The worst thing about this restaurant was definitely the service and hygiene. My family were looking for a place to eat, and since we have already been to many of the restaurants in that area we decided to try this restaurant. We walked into the restaurant and there was no one at the counter to seat the customers. A server came from the back of the restaurant and guided us to a table, there were 6 of us. The table that he guided us to was still in the process of being set up, the woman cleaning the table told us to wait at the front. So we all waited at the front, but then they decided to give the table to another family and seated us on a table meant for 5. They handed out the cutlery, but instead of holding the cutlery from the ends they held them in the area where the food was going to be placed. When recieving our food, they would place it at an inconvenient area instead of placing it in the center. The rate at which the food was coming out was bearable, however came at inconvenient times. We had received most of our foods apart from one dish, but when we had received the final dish most of us had already finished the rest of the dishes. When we left, we had to wait for them to tally the prices with a calculator. When first coming into this restaurant, we noticed that there were no asians, other than the servers, in the restaurant. At that point we could tell that it was not a good restaurant but still decided to try it. Overall, the service was not good, the restaurant was not very clean and the food was not pleasing.

A great local place, food is great value, very fresh and wonderfully tasty. The decor smacks of the 1980's and is definitely past its prime.

Sizzling steak is just the best and worth traveling for! also very reasonable prices. Staff are very friendly and even helpful when the weather is not the best!

Celebrated a birthday there on Sunday evening. The food was delicious, the staff extremely friendly and attentive. Li has waited on us several times and has always been a delight. She went through some new changes in the menu with us. Lots of great food. Will definitely go back.😊

The food was so amazing &we really enjoyed it. Nice people price was perfect and we will be going back again can't wait.& Compliments to the chef food on table on time.

Been coming here since I was a kid. Yes owners have changed and the price has increased but the food is still the best in the west! Quality of food hasn't changed. And there hasn't been a price increase in over 20years, so that can be forgiven plus there's a new fresh look

The spare rib pork black bean was extremely oily. It was basically 3 scoops of oil I had to dispose in the bin

Long time patron of the restaurant, but honestly haven't been back in over 10 years. The old joint was just another westernised Chinese restaurant. With a billion choices in the west to choose from, there was no need to go there. However this time round we searched for BBQ Roast duck in the area, and the closest big restaurant was Gold Leaf, which has gone downhill since the old Manager Jacky left. So DP was the only real choice. Turned out to be THE choice. The BBQ range was great and staff were super, super nice. Will be back next week.

Great restaurant in the heart of sunshine. Amazing food with wide selection to choose from. They have live seafood as well. Staff is very friendly

Beautifully cooked fresh food at a more than reasonable price I come here for lunch occasionally, good old fashioned Chinese food , Nice interior and friendly service every time we have fined!

Great local restaurant that specialise in Cantonese food . Love their roast duck and seafood dishes

Super delicious BBQ meat. The roasted duck super yummy with crispy skin and the BBQ pork juicy and full of flavour. Steamed fish is very fresh. I’ll definitely go again. 👍👍👍

Attended dinner here tonight for the first time since the change of owners. My partner, friend and her partner ordered around 6pm but didn’t get our food until 6.40pm! We waited 40mins! entrees came after mains? Defiantly think the service has gone down hill!

been coming here for over twenty years however management have changed and they seem to think 12 and 13 yr old children serving food is acceptable .Unfortunately we nearly wore our hot food.A good thing has come to an end.No more Diamond palace for us.

Service was very rushed and we felt like the lady who took our order gave us attitude. The food wasn’t bad for the price but I will say that their black bean sauce is far too salty
MissyC
Not great. Restaurant is very simple. Fried rice lacks flavour. Beef black bean sauce was awful. Too salty. It was so black that you couldn’t make out what the vegetables were. I would not go back here.

One of the best chinese restaurant in the west. My favourite dish is always Chillies beef stir fried vegetable. The best bargain is about lunch time from 11am - 3pm from monday to friday when you can get your lunch for $6.50. To be honest, its hard to find a lunch box with rice and stir fried beef or chicken with vegetable at that low price these days . And the most important thing is the quality of food is awesome.

Got a home delivery and ordered “wontons” and this is what I got, practically wonton sheets wouldn’t order them again.. Also on another note got chicken with Chinese vegetables and got cauliflower and chicken on a brighter note there omelette is one of the best I’ve had 👍🏻

When you walk through the doors into Diamond Palace, you're slapped in the face with a scene from Muriels Wedding - outdated decor likely not refreshed since the early 90s, large tables filled with middle aged, white men and women cackling away, and lots and lots of sweet and sour pork. Diamond Palace is my secret shame in Sunshine; my go- to for a quick and dirty serve of westernized cuisine. I have only ever copped a bad batch of slightly burnt fried rice once. The rice is always piping hot, the lemon chicken is crispy and tasty, and the sweet and sour pork is, well, sweet and sour. They know me by name over the phone now. Can't wait for my next Diamond Palace fix.

Good, honest clean Chinese food with friendly fast staff. Take away is not always great so best to dine in to get thier best quality! Clean store and parking can he hard to find on Friday and Saturday nights

This place is still the same as it was when I was a child. I haven't been here for over 10 years, and it is still the best place for Chinese food in the West. 10/10

Came here because I saw a beautiful picture of their seafood buffnet (or whatever it was called) on zomato. Turned out, it wasn't that pretty when I saw it with my own eyes. The taste was a bit too bland too and they put too many fish cakes in instead of any other seafood. Their chilli out luckily was pretty good, so it helped quite a bit. But if you ask me, the dish wasn't worth the price. The other dish that we ordered, sizzling beef steak was great though. It was tender and flavoursome. We also ordered a fried ice cream which was good, but it was just like any other fried ice cream in Melbourne. The staffs were more busy hiding in the kitchen for some reason and there was barely anyone attending the table.

Our family have been coming here for over 30 years and we all love it. I have been to so many other chinese restaurants and they simply dont compare not even the over the top expensive ones in the city in my eyes... I vote Diamond Palace the best in the west hands down!! The taste of the food is absolutely delicious and the staff are lovely but most of all your never waiting for more than 10 mins for your food.

Best Chinese in Sunshine hands down. Regular there, Jenny even know me by name.
Prices are very reasonable and the mon-fri $7.90 menu cant be beaten.
My Babes And I
My babes and I usually have Vietnamese food from one of our local restaurants, especially if we're eating around Sunshine, but every once and a while, we don't mind having some Chinese food. For some reason, my babes favourite restaurant for Chinese food in Sunshine is Diamond Palace so one day when she was craving some roast pork, I surprised her by taking her there for an early dinner.
Now, I like my Chinese food and we've been to some great Chinese restaurants in the city over the last couple of years but for me, Diamond Palace is like food court grade Chinese food in a restaurant. Having said that, we were here to eat dinner so I was hoping it would be value for money at least.
We walked into a totally empty restaurant just after 5 on a Sunday afternoon and we were seated by the small fish tank. After looking through the extensive menu, we ordered the Spicy Chicken Wing for our starter, I ordered the Special Delicious Chicken for my main, my babes ordered a Roast Pork with Chinese Vegetables for hers and we shared a small Special Fried Rice.
The best thing about a restaurant like this is that usually your food gets served very quick and today was no exception because within 5 minutes of ordering, all our food was served.
The Spicy Chicken Wing, which is three chicken wings deep fried to golden brown, was cooked perfectly but it wasn't spicy at all. The crispy golden brown chicken skin crunched under my bite to reveal the juicy meat within. I really enjoyed it but it was annoying that the advertised spiciness was nonexistent.
My Special Delicious Chicken, which is battered boneless chicken pieces deep fried then covered in a thick brown sauce and topped with some steamed veges, totally surprised me. The chicken was still moist and tender on the inside and the sweet sauce worked well with the batter. The only disappointment for me was that the batter was very plain and I think a few herbs or spices would've helped and I could've done without the veges.
My babes Roast Pork with Chinese Vegetables, which was the roast pork (or Char Siu) sautéed in a light brown sauce with vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, water chestnuts, onions and champignon mushrooms, was disappointing. The roast pork was a little dry, the sauce was bland and there was nothing Chinese about the vegetables except maybe the water chestnuts. Still, it satisfied my babes cravings for Char Siu.
We ate all our dishes with the Special Fried Rice, which is white rice fried in a wok with shrimp, bacon bits, peas, bean sprouts and bits of scrambled eggs, which was delicious and our favourite dish of our dinner. The flavourful fried rice wasn't oily and the flavour combinations made every bite interesting. My babes mentioned that it tasted very similar to how my mum makes fried rice so that probably helped in making it our favourite dish this arvo.
Although we were both quite full from our dinner, I started to crave for a Fried Ice Cream so I ordered it for my dessert and my babes wanted a bit of mine. Again, my ice cream was served within 5 minutes and I was surprised when it came with a lit sparkler skewered through the top. It's funny because it looks very elaborate and the other few diners must've thought it was my birthday. I wondered if they serve the lot sparkler with every dessert or is it just with the Fried Ice Cream? The crust of the deep fried vanilla ice cream, which is a cross between bread crumbs and batter, had a weird texture and taste to me. I still ate it, especially once it was soaked into the caramel sauce at the bottom, and it definitely satisfied my ice cream cravings.
Although the food at Diamond Palace isn't of a high quality, the large dish sizes, quick serving time and surprisingly helpful and well mannered serving staff make it great value for money. Most locals must enjoy their food as there was a constant stream of customers with 90% of them taking the food away rather than eat in. Recommended for people who really need Chinese food on Hampshire Road in Sunshine.

best chinese food I have eaten in a long while. we were a group of 6 had chilli prawns, sweet and sour chicken, sizzling steak and chow mien good food and friendly staff will be back.
Andrew
Standard fare Chinese food. Staff were very friendly, food came out quickly and everything was cooked well.
Four dishes, two beers and a soft drink came to $74. Normal Western Suburb Melbourne prices.

We love this place, the food is ridiculously good value, the flavour is excellent and the service is lightning fast. Excellent for takeaway with speedy delivery as well.

Ate here with the family and friends; 20 people in total. We had the 10 course banquet at $27 pp. Entree included curry puff, sesame prawn toast and spring roll plus chicken and sweet corn soup. Mains included lemon chicken, seafood combination noodles, sizzling beef, sweet and sour pork and special fried rice. Dessert was a choice between banana or pineapple fritters and coffee or tea. Overall, the whole package tasted nice and everyone was quite satisfied by the end of the night. Staff were very accommodating and pleasant throughout the night.

Reminiscent of every 70s-era Aussie country town Chinese restaurant, Diamond Palace is shamelessly oldskool Sunshine. Featuring pink walls, red wooden wall bumpers, gold trim chairs, and surprisingly modern grey carpet, DP (as it's known locally) has a face for home delivery.

We had the Butter Chicken, Mixed Vegies, Salt & Pepper "Chef Special" Tofu, and a carafe of mystery red wine (at $9.50, it scraped through as 'just drinkable'). The food was not overly MSG'd (a big plus) and good enough for the price, but nothing struck us as something we'd be craving anytime soon.

As one of the few dedicated Chinese restaurants in the area, it's a good one to have on home delivery speed dial, or for a quaint night of Chinese restaurant nostalgia. And the hot towels are a nice touch.

Always great food. Have been getting deliveries or dining here for years. Would be close to the oldest running restaurant in Sunshine now. Great service and great food. If you have never been.. Go, you won't be disappointed.

been here a few times, never had any problems with the food or the staffthe staff are very kind and accommodating. One time we ordered the 8 course meal, and they allowed us to get this for two people for a couple $ extra because no one else wanted it in our group.Another time we ordered a meal but had to leave straight after receiving it because my son had dirtied his clothes and we didn't have extra, they packed it straight up for us.thank you to the staff of this restaurant

The best Chinese restaurant going around. This place doesn't look flash, but the food never disappoints. Singapore noodles and sizzling steak are definitely the signature dishes here

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!. The food here is terrible. Not worth the money at all. Spend your money elsewhere. Rather eat a Big Mac from McDonalds.

Curried scallops. Divine....

Exceptional food - we highly recommend : chicken & vegetables, fried spicy noodles, bananas with ginger syrup. Many thanks to the chef & staff particularly JENNY & Bo Bo for regularly attending to Derek and Anna

DISGUSTING. I went there last time with my family and I was quite disgusted with the quality of the food. We ordered many meals and most of them were really oily. The meat was like plastic and all the food tasted like it was microwaved.
Would not recommend coming here if you're looking for a good meal.

Fantastic food. One of my most favorite places great food friendly staff nice comfortable place two thumbs up for over 20 years

Great place, value for money and very friendly staff:)

DISAPPOINTED. I ordered the sweet and sour pork and it was awful. It tasted like it was microwaved as the vegetables were slimy and meat was bland. It seems like it has accommodated to the Australian palate and lost the authentic Chinese flavour.

Old Fav. My parents dined here when they were a young couple, married and now with adult children (me!)
Fond memories. Great food :)

I love in particular..
-sweet corn soup
-spring rolls
-sizzling beef
-chicken satay
-any spicy noodle dish

Best in Sunshine. Excellent food and great value. My partner loves the cantonese pork ribs while I am partial to beef/chicken/pork in oyster sauce. Though it is wise to book to get a table in the main restaurant area or you may be put in the express area where the food does not seem to be as good. That said it is still my favourite chinese in sunshine.

Lift your game!. I was looking forward to some good chinese takeaway food and had gone to Diamond Palace after reading reviews on urban spoon that seemed to tip in thier favour. Unfortunatley I must have arrived three days after they should have changed the oil. I ordered the sweet sour pork in batter and a large special fried rice. The batter was burnt as it does in over used oil yet still claggy inside, and the pork was chewy and rubbery. The sweet sour sauce was more like vinegary and bitter and the rice was oilier than a Dipstick! Its hard to find decent chinese food these days as very few take pride in thier cooking any more. I'd have been better off with some two minute noodles! Lift your game Diamond Palace!!!!!!!

20yrs later. 20 years later & they still hold their price. Excellent service from staff, very quick take away. The food is always in large amounts at a reasonable low price. It's really the old gem that just needs a face lift & a new vibe to compete with other new business around.
Chris
Staff lack basic manners. Rude beyond belief. Average food

The Best Place For Chinese. I have been to this restaurant many times and I have been happy with the service, food and prices every time. If you come here on a Monday when barely anyone is there, you get your food really quickly.
Gary
Great Value. Had the 2 course Lunch Special for $7.50. Lots of main course choices and excellent value for the price.
Rachel
Have been going here all my life and love it everytime! Friendly staff and good cheap food! All Chinese is now compared to here and never lives up to it!! Bit squishy in the seating area but all good! When I was a kid they used to give me free bags if prawn crackers lol

I have been going to this restaurant since i was a baby , it has been a family restaurant , where we go on special occasions and birthdays , and now I take all of my friends there , the food is delicious , always fresh , speedy and the service is always fantastic ! Would highly recommend this restaurant to everybody for great Chinese food .
Nicole
Great local Chinese eatery. Used to be brilliant before change of ownership - still good now but can't compare service and quality from before. Usually busy. Excellent value. Good all-rounder; try the sizzling steak, Peking pork, chicken corn soup, Chinese sausage, birds nest. Yum!
Megan
I've tried their steam fish and malaysian style sotong. The steam fish is okay, I've eaten tastier steam fish elsewhere. The malaysian style sotong is delicious and appetizing.
Medium Rare Steak
A no go!! We ordered two dishes. The BBQ combination was nothing like we'd expected. Lots of chicken scraps/wings & duck butt!!! Other dish was not enough meat for the price. For a nice decor restaurant, it was quite a disappointment to see such dishes be served out!
For a highly rated restaurant on Urbanspoon, I may or may not give this restaurant a second chance, before I turn it down totally!
Tange
Very average. Lots of clear, sweet, glutinous sauce on everything.
Lee
Western Chinese. Ordered lemon grass and chilli pork, they used the pork that cut from the BBQ pork,so that's mean they give me over-night-unsold pork, try sizzling steak, the source is sweet, and tomato beef, they put soda powder into th beef made not chewy, only the sesame prawn taste ok
Heather
Great food and very cheap! Group of 10 of us went and bill came to $17.50 each!! Definitely going back :-)
Chloe Curtis
Yum Chinese!!. Service is always speedy and cheerful, and the food is always delicious! The spicy chicken fillets are yum!! Not to mention its real value! So lucky that this is my local!
Evan
Yumm!. A short review here - food has always been great (9/10), and customer serive is good too (8/10).

Value for money is the big draw card here! A banqutte of 8 courses is about $22, and there is so much food you will need a wheel barrow to curry your stomach home.

Well worth a visit - I have been going there now for 5 years on and off.
Damian
The lunch time specials are great value for money and taste terrific and the service is friendly and the staff are friendly always a great dining experience whether its lunch or dinner at the diamond palace
Reegsman
Meh. Stock standard chinese takeaway/restaurant so you expect a certain quality to be met. Unfortunately everything I've ever eaten from this place has been bland in flavour and slimy and unappealing in appearance/texture. worth the 5 minute drive to go to poons in footscray instead.
Jenklez
Wonderful. The food is cheap and service is wonderful. The people there are wonderful, and being a local, they will remember your order over time.
