Review Afghan Master Kebab - Sunshine

Darrell Hamilton
Never tried Afghan food before so we thought we'd give this place a try. Wow, what a lovely, welcoming experience and we really enjoyed the tastes served up. We told them this was our first time there and they welcomed us with open arms. After discussing the menu options and telling them we weren't into hot dishes they recommended a couple of dishes for us. The first was a mixture of beef, lamb and chicken with a light salad. The other was all chicken, again with a side salad. Both came with a beautiful zingy mint dipping sauce on the side. OMG!... soooooo yummy, we could have drank it. The bread came out piping hot as it had just been made fresh for our meal. We could have eaten the bread as a main. It was off its chops. All in all, a really enjoyable dining experience. The place was full of diners who were obviously from the middle east. That tells you something about the food. We'll be back!

One of the best Afghan food in Melbourne. The Lamb kebab with Nann was excellent! Nann was crispy, and the charcoal grilled lamb was splendid! Can't love it more, and I will recommend it to people who wanna try Afghani food and\or meat lovers

Management recently changed and the food quality is even better now very authentic flavours if yiur in the area do try however the customer service needs some work!

Food is good. Restaurant doesn't offer tap water. Servers seemed to be untrained. They forgot the items ordered at the time of payment. Also I had to withdraw cash from ATM located very far as their machine was out order. But enjoyed the food.

Whenever I try a new Afghan place my go to meals are the mixed kebab and the Manto. Here they call it Munto but it passed the test, a huge plate of these delicious lamb dumplings. The mixed grill was tender and moist and we'll marinated. 10/10. Update. 2nd visit and the food was even better.

Happy with my meal. The bread is absolutely delicious. Goes well with the chicken. Cooked perfectly well. Delivery was on time. Thank you.

Delicious chicken, lamb shish with salad plates. Grilled fish was equally good. The lamb head, feet, floor dish was out - it must be a popular dish. Would love to try some next time. Due to COVID, they no longer serve free flow make yourself hot tea bags drinks - please bring this back! Hot tea completed the lovely grilled dishes!

We ended up here from the amazing smell of the charcoal smoke getting pumped through Sunshine 🤣 So stoked we tried. We ordered one mixed grill and it was so good we ordered another one to takeaway for later.. keep up the good work legends! 🙌

Quality of food is fantastic and the staff is smiling and friendly. Food takes a while to prepare but I think thats because they make everything fresh. Love it!

Top level charcoal grills, super tender, juicy and charcoaly meats. Hands down the best grill in Melbourne. Absolutely the best and freshest bread I've ever had. Fast service, clean premise, really good pricing. One of our favourite places to go to in Melbourne. Don't believe the 1 star rating. Its unreasonable to give 1 star just for a bit of a wait. We've been here so many times and we never had to wait too long. Even if we had to, the quality of the food is worth waiting for! Used to be cash only but they started accepting card now! Unlimited facial tissues (unlike most Chinese restaurants), no extra charge for takeaway containers, and ridiculously good value for money.

It took a while to order but then it took about 45 minutes and we were still waiting for 2 meals. Had to leave. Wait time is unreasonable for the amount of customers.

4.0 A hidden gem in Sunshine with Afghan kebabs and curry to dip delicious warm pita bread.
N.B.: Zomato menu outdated, prices higher now. Cash only. No table water.

🍹 DRINKS: no table water available (only bottled water to buy), but free hot water and green and black tea

🍽 FOOD:
- "Lamb Qorma" $14 - this curry was delicious, not too heavy. The lamb could have been more tender but we loved this dish. The pita bread for dipping was generous and absolutely amazing.
- "Charcoal Chicken - Full" $18.50 - nice and crispy chicken, with a side of salad and lemon. A bit plain.
⭐️- "Mixed Kebabs" $18.50 - a yummy range of many pieces of kebab, easy to share! Would highly recommend.

📷 AMBIENCE: clean, warm, homely interior with plenty of places to sit and even some floor rug space

🧂SERVICE: good, accommodating of requests as we were in a rush.

📖 LOG:
2019.04.25. The mixed grill kebabs is a definite go to! My partner and I both big eaters but ordering one mixed grill with an extra bread was more than enough for us to share! But what is really impressive is the Afghan bread that is HUGE and only $1 per every extra piece. Perfectly made with a crunchy exterior and soft interior! Also don’t forget to pick up some baklava on the way out for only $1 a piece as well! Will be back if I’m in Sunshine again, we found the service from the Afghan female staff really friendly 🙂

I have tried authentic Kebabs when I was in New Delhi, India (Khan Chacha and Kebab Xpress) and visit to Afghan Master Kebab was completely unplanned. I was visiting my friend in Sunshine and being a Middle Eastern guy, he suggested me to try this place for dinner. It was more like a Pakistani/Afghan cuisine.

The restaurant location is a walkable distance from the nearest railway station (Sunshine) and from the bus station nearby. The ambiance was average. There is also a traditional form of seating on the floor at one end of the restaurant.

The staff found clueless about the cuisine as I could see her struggling even to pronounce the name of dishes. I wish she could at least manage a warm and welcoming face. Moving on, we ordered Kebabs, Bread, Rice, and Lamb Curry. You can grab tea bags and hot water at the counter for free. As I was grabbing my favorite Pepsi Max, I noticed they have all sorts of soft drinks.

We had a sumptuous meal. The bread was really big and I am sure I haven't tasted anything like that before. It was a bit crispy on the outside and very soft and airy on the inside. Though the lamb curry was delicious, the gravy was little watery for my taste. Wish they could provide us with some sauce or mayonnaise for the Kebabs. Talking about the quantity, I would say, I dish was enough for two people.

Scrumptious food and quick service. Been a regular visitor at this place and have had no complaints ever.
Our favourite is the mixed platter and this place does typical Karachi like tandoori naans!! 😍

Discovered by accident when all other restaurants were closed. Loved it since. Always go back for mixed kebab, rice dishes and special momo. Good value for money. Asked for extra salad and dipes for a couple of times, but always had leftover bread. Friendly staff.

Second time there after my first visit many years ago because I am now living in the Eastern Suburb. So happened I was picking up friends from Airport and gonna stayed somewhere near Sunshine and they want to have dinner late at 9:30pm. The food is good and very traditional. Love the bread which is crispy outside and tender soft inside and the dipping sauce is yummy too. Two individual sets of meals are more than enough for 3 people to share. I will revisit the restaurant if I happened to pass by again in the future.

I love the food here! It became a weekly thing with friends at one point! Especially the Chicken Briyani! It's becoming one of my favourite dishes! The staff are quite friendly and are always more than willing to help. The portion is generous and the bread is beautifully made!
Maria
Love this place and super excited that they have opened another branch in Deer Park. I generally always go for the jooja kebab. The bread is to die for, we sometimes get extras and use them as pizza bases and at $1 each you can't go wrong. Love the complimentary tea also!

An impromptu visit to this place was indeed a delight. Our first experience with Afghani food was palatable. We ordered couple of items as per suggestion from staff and it was indeed a delight. For the prices they have very good portion size and we had some leftovers. Staff does have some difficulty with accent however not a major barrier
Andrew
First experience eating Afghani food, and it was absolutely delicious. Try the mixed meat skewers platter, which is served with salad, dips and naan. Look, the service needs to improve, however, the food is fantastic. 8/10.

What has happened to the service???

Today i had the worst experience especially after eating it many times and loving it, so i recommended it to my friend. We ordered the mixed kebab and the qabuli palao with chicken korma meal.

The lady who took the order initially just stared at us while taking order as if we were aliens. After slowly taking down order,i especially told her to make sure food is hot (she did not understand what i meant so i explained to her in her language)

After 10 min of wait, food arrived. The qabuli palao with korma supposed to come with naan bread and i even told the lady. She said ok i will bring it and she never came back. The food itself was a bit cold. After eating few bites of rice and mixed kebab, i took both plates to the waiter. Told him food is very cold and if they can reheat it. He also looked at me if i was an alien and argued that its not cold. I said im telling you its cold - please warm it. He said it is not cold. I still argued and after 5 min he said ok will microwave it. He forgot about it. I went to the kitchen after 5 min and he said hes bringing it. It was still so so (must have gotten cold in the microwave too as he took so long to bring it to us)

Anyways, i was quite excited to eat here in the beginning but looks like management and service has dropped far down. They dont respect the customers. I dont think will come again any time soon.

The food is really really really good! Home cooking style. Lots of afghan people eating here with smiley faces so you know it's the real deal. Prompt service and everything is made from scratch on site. A new favorite!

Gotta improve your HYGIENE plus the customer service. After complaining about the "cockroaches having a nap inside the cutleries" (refer to the picture) Haji showed attitude that why i have told him about cockroach. DAmnnn!

Hands down BEST kebabs out West. Decor isn't flash but not bothered as the food and friendly staff make up for it !! The smell will point you in the right direction A+++

Awesome food, their chefs nail it every time. Consistent heavenly food!

Have tried most of their dishes, Kabuli pulao, lamb shank and mix kebab are favourites.
The Hungry Moustache
Imagine being lost in the suburb of Sunshine, a mostly Vietnamese-centric society where the humble bowl of Pho or Bun Bo Hue is King. However, as you wander about the streets you catch a whiff of smoke that catches your attention and it stops you in your steps. It catches your lungs, not harsh enough to make you cough, but strong enough to engage your saliva glands sending hangry signals to your brain. As you edge closer to the source with your canine-like sense of smell, you encounter a humble looking restaurant. As the cloud clears and you rub the tear-inducing smoke from your face.. you read the sign, ‘Afghan Master Kebabs’. Overly dramatic much? Maybe, but this is what happens when you have some of the best charcoal grilled meats and bread in your backyard.

I was taken here by a couple of friends, who had been telling me how good the food was. I must say I was very impressed! The staff were wonderful, I felt so welcomed. The restaurant is very clean and tidy. Most importantly the food was delicious! The kebabs were full of flavor and the bread was so fresh. I will definitely be coming back here and recommending to all of my friends.
Jenny
Have been here to eat quite a few times. The bread is really fluffy and tastes really good. The mixed kebab meats are flavoursome without being overly salty. I felt the meat was a bit dry. Also they seem to have diluted the sauces (well, at least the yoghurt one). Customer service was a bit of a letdown - I ordered an extra piece of bread and it was never delivered, and had to ask the person at the counter about it (we got it as takeaway), and the waiter was hard to flag down. Otherwise, some really good food here.

they have renovated looks good. There is service now and it's great. bread was so soft and fluffy. marinade was good but has changed (slightly down) meat was all tender. meat leaning to a saltier taste. maybe just unbalanced that night

Dropped here for a quick lunch. The place was very clean and inviting. I ordered the mix kebab which came with 1 mince, 1 tikka and 2 chicken skewers also garden salad on the side with one Afghan bread and green chile salsa. It didn't take long for the food to come out.
The bread is the best you can just eat it by itself. The meat is cooked to perfection the chicken is so yummy and full of flavours. If you want a real traditional kebab you have to give this place ago.
Keep up the good food Afghan Master Kebab
I will be back for more..

Pretty average food, the pricing is okay as well. I wouldn't rave about it but the meal sizes are decent. The staff are all really friendly and there isn't much more to say really. I would go back for a quick cheap meal that will fill me up but I wouldn't be running back that's for sure.
Elizabeth Michaelides
Never disappoints. I've come here a few times and everything I've tried tasted great, particularly like the chicken kebabs as they have a nice smoky flavour.
Nicole P
So damn good. The mince kebabs are amazing. Probably too much rice served, but I guess that isn't much of a complaint. Cooked fresh to order too. Comes with bread twice the size of your head.
Tommy Boyce
Best Kebabs in Melbourne hands down. Super clean place, really friendly staff and the tastiest, most succulent meats you'll find in this town. This place exemplifies the concept of doing something traditional and uncomplicated but doing it to perfection. I'll take that over a failed attempt at progressive food any day thanks. Add this to the fact that it is so cheap. I've paid quadruple these prices for meals that don't come close to that which Afghan Master Kebab provides. I'm lucky to live close by yet I would travel much further to sample their delectable meats if I had to. My only criticism is that I wish they served some hot tea.

All expectations were exceeded!
Ordered over the phone and picked up fifteen minutes later. Very quick service and the restaurant itself was very clean and staff were helpful.
The food itself was amazing and very filling. I was salivating on the drive home and was very impressed with the portion sizes and the flavours - the lamb is marinated so well and is deliciously smoked. Decently priced for the sheer amount of food.
Will definitely be returning!
It's All About Food
Awesome place.. I have been to many Afghani restaurants but this one price wise is the best and taste wise at par to others.. Very neat and clean.. Good service.. The aroma itself in the restaurant is amazing and makes you drool.. We ordered Mix Platter, Qabuli Palaw, Tikka Kebab everything comes accompanied with salad, green chutney and Mayo dips and Naan simply Amazing.. Decent serve sizes.. The chargrilled taste is simply divine.. Highly recommend this place.. Must Try!! The only negative part is they do not accept cards.. Yes mate it's a cash only restaurant..

Biryani is great and a good sized serving portion. Also recommend the mixed kebab which comes with plenty of bread(which we found better reheated in the pan at home). The staff in restaurant are super friendly and welcoming. Definitely check this place out.
Jamie Tupaea
Our local hot spot for quick and healthy take away!! Love the biryani here! The marinated mixed plate cooked over the charcoal is simply amazing! We are very lucky this place is literally a 5 min drive away! It's cheap, healthy and delicious! You have to get in early in the evening to get biryani before they run out!
Raju George
Awesome place, food like how everyone has commented , drooling , also they have upgraded their restaurant with more cleanliness , well maintained washroom. Awesome kebabs , naan is good. I would recommend this place over afghan star restaurant , trust me

First time eating here, food was delicious! Great customer service. Servings were of a generous size too.
This is now our favorite kebab place!
Monte Hudson
Low expectations. Blown away by the taste preceeding the actual tastes was the smell that i think i actually drooled, we took in the impeccable cleanliness and have now decided after eating that i will only have another kabab elsewhere if its 3am and o am drunk. No such limitations om Afghan master kabab, im sure it will taste fantastic no matter what time of day

Greg
really awesome place with awesome food. mix and kobida kebab is amazing.
best place to eat in sunshine.......................................

I walked in after seeing the "open" sign. I see a group of people eating. They told me they are not open!
On a previous visit I was not impressed either, but after reading the other reviews I thought I'd give it another go.

Have tried it once. It was very delicious. Tender chicken kebabs. I'll be back for sure to try other dishes

Fantastic take away restaurant. Came here for dinner one night. What a treasure!
The bread was amazing.
The curies were awesome.
The chicken kebabs are to die for.
The roast chicken is lick your lips tasty.
The rice. Oh my goodness the rice! Please have the rice! It's so so soooooo gooooood!
I could just eat the rice with nothing else. I think they must put crack into the rice. How can rice taste so darn delicious?!?!

This is our treasure.
It's so good,.

Clean restaurant, polite service, incredible food with realistic pricing!. I wanted to venture somewhere different from WeFo, Yarraville & Seddon. We were going to the movies at Village so I thought I'd look for something in Sunshine. Afghan Master Kebab popped up in my search. The restaurant was very neat and clean, staff were polite and attentive. We ordered a mixed kebab and lamb kebab. The food was amazing. Decent serving sizes too. I could only eat half of my kebab. Succulent meat, beautifully marinated with a lovely smoky tang, the salads were crisp and full of flavour, the bread is amazing and even the yoghurt dipping sauce rates a mention. We will def return and will certainly be recommending this place to our friends and family.

Mixed Kebab. Meat is nicely done, one of the best in Melbourne area.

Evolved Kebabbing. These guys are up there with the best. Their food is full of love and the men are powerfully ethnic. 9/10

The food is amazing, kabuli rice and mix kebab are my favorites.
Good service but a bit slow.
Highly recommending to others to try.
Jasmine
Love it!. Great food, great service and good prices! I love the bread and green chilli, the chicken and the Briyani rice are amazing, look forward to trying everything on the menu!

Best for some local eats. If I'm looking for a quick, cheap and delicious meal - Afghan Master Kebab is my favourite local.
Suggest getting the mix kebab so that you can taste all the delicious meats on offer.
The house made bread makes a perfect accompaniment to the very moist and tasty meats.
Also make sure you try the qorma with rice too. I love the qabuli papaw - carrots and sultanas fried in butter, delish!
Smileyzak
Afghan kebab is best. I am in love with Afghan Kebab. I just like all other, order two meals. One was a mixed kebab and other was chicken. So delicious, kebab is tender, spice is good and the extra that comes with kebab is amazing like fresh bread, salad and garlic sauce. I used to drive 75 kilometers to Dandenong or 40 kilometer to Box hill for Afghan Kebab. Now it is close to my house, I come here for a taste change. amazing Kebab. worth every penny. Definitely recommended.
Dean Joseph
One of the best lamb and chicken shish I have ever tasted, don't know why there is a review about cleanliness and service, both were first class
Loren
Good kebabs. I had the mixed kebab and it was delicious. Plenty of food and good value for under $15. The salad as pretty basic, but was really all you need with such yummy meat. Service was a little slow and sloppy, but the guy was really nice. Will be back
Michaelevans.au
Woeful. Service is slow - waited 45 minutes for 1 dish. Hygiene is terrible ( a glove used all day does not replace hand washing) and the meet is dragged through a plastic curtain from back of house to the kitchen. After waiting far too long, I got the dish which was not what I ordered.

I cant believe all the positive reviews, this place is a dump
Dilpreet Singh Gulati
Very nice mixed kebabs. Very tender and full with flavor. Good size servings
J-Fo
Mixed Kebab. That is all.. As a regular for lunch , I thoroughly recommend the Mixed Kebab as the go-to dish here. 4 skewers, comprising of 2 chicken, 1 kofte and 1 lamb kebab with a large serve of Afghan flatbread and a simple salad of tomato, lettuce and cucumber dressed with lemon, it is an ample and satisfying meal more than enough for one. The kebabs are lightly spiced and expertly cooked to smoky, moist and juicy perfection over hot coals, complemented by a small side serve of spicy mint yogurt sauce. Service can be a little slow at times but that is understandable for a relatively new family-run joint. The great thing is that they are flexible with special requests; you just have to ask.

I literally can't believe all these reviews. We went here a few weeks back, when we arrived there was literally one other couple there that was already eating. We arrived, sat and had our order taken. 10 minutes later 3 older guys walked in, sat, had their order taken. 10 minutes later their food arrives, they had about 6 plates + 3 bread baskets to share between them. 20! Minutes later, our food comes out. We ordered missed kebabs each. I'm absolutely shattered I didn't take a photo of our plate. 4 skewers of meat with barely a handful of lettuce, the lettuce having literally 1 slice of tomato and 1 slice of cucumber, this was both of our plates and we were also given one little satchel of garlic sauce to share between us. The bread was burnt to a crisp.

I myself finished the garlic sauce and asked for more, we were told there was no more left. We ate our meals thoroughly disappointed and on our way out saw that the 3 gentlemen that arrived after us however somehow managed to have their food served to them before us, had LEFT OVER an entire plate of lettuce with what would have been about an entire tomato chopped up and probably three quarters of a cucumber... and and there were 4 satchels of garlic sauce still left on the table unopened.

I'm assuming these guys must have either been the owners or knew them because I couldn't think of any other reason why you would serve such ridiculous portions to some people and leave others without. As we were leaving, we also overheard some more customers ordering and being told that they have run out of tomato, cucumber, all sauces and beef... Seriously.

I honestly wouldn't bother with this place, all these positive reviews sound like reviews from friends and family... That or we must have coincidentally had the worst staff in the world working that night.. on a Saturday
Jacob
Master Blaster. We visited this establishment and found the staff very friendly and accommodating. We had the mixed kababs and a chicken & rice dish, it was delicous. The interior is a bit over the top, but thats what i love about this place.
Keep up the great service & great food....

Yes Master. If you’re willing to look beyond the flashy wallpaper, there’s plenty to like about Afghan Master Kebab. I probably wouldn’t have even known the place existed if Kenny from the blog ‘Consider the Sauce’ hadn’t suggested it for a quick midweek dinner.

As you’d expect, kebabs take pride of place on the menu, however there’s also whole and half chickens cooked over charcoal, a couple of Afghani style ‘curry’ dishes and the renowned Qabuli Palaw (rice with lightly fried sultanas & sliced carrot).

My “Mix Kebab” meal included two skewers of chicken, one of cubed lamb and another of the minced variety along with a simple salad, Afghan naan bread and dips.
The various meats had been marinated with yoghurt, onion, garlic, ginger, herbs & spices; though the flavour imparted is subtle. Cooking the meats over charcoal really does take them to an entirely new level of flavoursome.

The accompanying salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato & cucumber) is simple and sans dressing, but then again this is the norm at all the other Afghan establishments I’ve visited in Melbourne. No complaints about the freshly baked & generous serving of Afghan naan bread.

With all the meals priced below $15 this friendly, family owned Afghani spot is well worth a visit.

Loved this place. I can see what the fuss is about good value, great taste, no fuss, family owned restaurant with friendly service. It just is what it is. Don't change a thing!

Excellent mixed kebab. The mixed kebab is splendid. Juicy chunks of chicken, lamb kofta and lamb meat chargrilled over coals at the back, accompanied by a mint yogurt sauce and a giant naan bread. Clearly a family-run joint, service is a little slow but efficient and polite enough for my liking. Recommended.

Food is not good. We had mix kebab and lamb kebab and food are not good. Also, bread is not soft.

Some food are over priced

We will not recommend any body.

Unhappy customer.

Oh My God!!!. Reminded me of home cooked meals made by my nan!
this place is the best...the food is next to none in melbourne atleast!!!
I have already been here twice and each time taking new people to go there...
I wish I could learn to cook from them :)
James
I've had the take away mixed kebab a couple of times, and to describe the meat as spectacular would be to do it a disservice! It's pricey, but probably enough for two, not that I'm up for sharing! The salad could've been livelier, but overall I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this restaurant.
Sally
I died and went to food heaven! This is a relatively new place in Sunshine, set up and run by former asylum seekers. The menu is refreshingly simple, with no more than 6 different styles of meat available in different combos including chicken, lamb and mince kebabs, charcole chicken, and chicken and lamb qorma. There's also a veggie option of cauliflower and peas in a yummy looking sauce. Everything is served with basic salad, plain rice or rice cooked with raisins and afghan bread.
For those of you new to afghan bread, it's an awesome combination of naan and pita bread.
It's super cheap, with most of the plates available for $14 (including 4 kebabs, salad and bread) and is more than enough for one person.

They also do their own version of a doner kebab, which is meat cooked over coals on skewers with a little bit of salad and grilled onion, wrapped in afghan bread. Yum!

I recommend the mix kebab plate, a little bit of everything (and a little slice of heaven!)

The decor is amazing too, complete with cream and gold doilies on a red table cloth, all under protective plastic. The walls and ceiling are completely wall papered (this cannot be described, see it for yourself) and a golden crystal chandelier completes the warm and inviting atmosphere.

Do yourself a favour, pop down for a quick meal and you won't be disappointed!

Absolutely beautiful food! New favourite out west, tender meat and fresh salad!

...this is a place which values substance over style. It’s a small space, probably wouldn’t fit more than 40 people at a stretch. The interior décor, while not sophisticated, has a quaint charm to it.
