Review Food Star Family Restaurant - Sunshine

What can I say about this place. The food is cold. The seafood is not even put on ice. So if you want to get food poisoning go to this place. The service is not much better. When my partner went to use the toilets. Lights weren’t even working. I wouldn’t recommend anyone going to this food star. The place should be close down. Until they learn how to cook. And it’s also over price. I would not be coming back.

This place is always good for a nice all you can eat meal. Food is always fresh and hot and there's plenty to choose from including prawns. They are also a licensed premises for alcohol, so if you like a drink with dinner the bar is right there.

This place was filthy. Most of the food was cold. Did I mention how dirty the place was. It has huge potential but wow its bad. I actually felt gross eating there. Mouldy grapes. Store brought deserts. Home brand garlic bread the butter wasn't even melted on. Toilets were beyond gross. The carpet was absolutely disgusting. Things stuck to the ceiling. None of the food was labelled had to guess what you was eating. Cups they gave us to drink tap water from was dirty. They buffet had a thick layer of dust on it. It was cheap and nasty cost is $102 for 2 adults and 2 children. Don't waste your time and money on this place strongly recommend avoid it like the plague. Saturday night and it was pretty much empty tells you alot Sorry but it needs a massive deep clean. Perhaps a visit from the inspectors before someone gets very sick

Food quality is very poor. The food is not hot the equipment is perished. Toilets could be more presentable although they are way cleaner than McDonalds toilets. There are no labels on serving trays. You don’t know wether it’s chicken or duck, beef or hound.

I took my Wife here for lunch and it was quiet but the food was good. Been here many many times pre covid so we've spent ALOT here over the years. The following day I decided to take my Family here for Dinner for a Birthday outing as the food was actually good the previous day. They charged us full price and we walked to get food and it was almost all gone and they didn't top up anything. We had to fill up on whatever scraps were left and hurried as they were starting to take remaining food away to the kitchen. Worst part was the Boss asked us to take whatever food we wanted back to the table so the staff could clean up and close early. Normally not a big issue but they charged us full dinner price for 5 people and was hurried with the scraps with a polite hurry up and leave.

2nd plate l took had a piece of pork stuck on it they didn't refill the food trays the prawns were abit soft by 8.30pm they were turning off the lights in the restaurant and dryers in the toilets had to use toilet paper to dry my hands there was no soap coming out of dispenser. Toilet was leaking but most of the other toilets were clean. By the time l ate and went to get desert cakes were put away nothing but ice cream and topping ? What did l pay for ?

This place is FILTHY! Id rather starve. I definitely regret coming here. The food was cold and tasted foul, The plates are plastic and cutlery are old and unclean, The floor is filthy, There is trash stuck to the ceiling and the whole place is outdated. Avoid this place. Health inspectors need to visit this place ASAP!!!

First of all; service upon entrance was appalling, and unjust. Was greeted with an attitude before even sitting down. On top of the price was raised from the usual $20 to $26.50. The place was a complete mess (smelled) and a few trip hazards around the sitting area. A bottle of coke 1.25L cost $8 (I have never seen) Lastly the food was just sloppy and obviously rushed, truely one of the worst spots the eat in the whole of Melbourne.

I highly advise you avoid this atrocious so called ‘all you can eat’.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if you see rats running around.

Fried chicken served half cooked
Took one bite and blood came out dripping
Place is not clean
“Clean” dishes still not cleaned thoroughly
Place is getting worse unfortunately won’t be back

I saw quite a few bad comment but still wanting to give it a try as I was working nearby and very hungry. It's not that bad for the price i paid. It offered the standard all you can eat will do and it's what I called cheap and cheerful

Where do I start? As a kid my family and I used to visit foodstar sunshine a couple times a year so I don't really remember quality but from what majority of my family have said, it's not the best place if you want quality.

Years later, November 2018 I decide to re live a childhood memory and decide to give food star a shot. Opening hours on a Friday for dinner are 5:30 - 9:30. My date and I arrived at 6:30pm, so an hour After opening and immediately start filling up our plates. Alot of the food was still half full at least. There were no fries, a chunky beef and vegetable stew was on its last scoop, half a pizza tiny pieces of roast beef, pork and leg ham that looked like they had been attacked with pitchforks. Not to mention dry and stale. Gravy was water at least on the top half and the bottom was almost like a thick tar. The sushi plate was mostly eaten and I highly doubt in an hour someone had eaten all that sushi. I was craving fries and went for my second plate of food and still no fries. Mind you people are still walking in and paying full price. At about 7:30 I asked one of the so called "staff" are you bringing out more food or is this it? She looked at me and said, what!!? Like she was so offended but I repeated myself and she said she would ask the chef. 10 minutes later she returns and says that it were closing soon. IT'S A FRIDAY NIGHT AND PEOPLE ARE STILL WALKING IN AND YOU CLOSE IN 3 HOURS.... I walked away from her and went about my dinner and said im never coming back here again. I wanted my moneys worth. It got to about 8:45 and there was about 4 tables occupied. They started turning off the food stall lights 45 minutes before closing and started sitting around on tables picking food off the food tables with their bare hands. Like hello I paid my entry I still have 45 minutes to eat and youre using your fingers. I hate that so much.
Toilets and urinal bowls are mouldy and stained and they smell so bad. The toilets seem to be located right behind the kitchen so that's gross Not sure if I'll ever come back here to be honest. Unless there are some mayjor improvements of hygiene, staff and food quality and supply.

If you need a cheap buffet grub, people always go to this place. Food is loaded with msg and I believe some food were leftovers from the previous day. Not sure but that’s what it appears to be. Not really bad. If you want something cheap and have a lot of variety, Food Star can be an option.

Flies around the food. Service is not great, staff have no emotions. Food is average and really you put cookies in the savory section? And also the bar attendant was rude asking me "What do you want?" Really is that how you treat your customers? Also $25 for dinner and you eat on plastic plates and get given tissues to wipe your face, oh god that's bad. Oh did I forget the big bucket of people's eaten food underneath the plates where you walk past and all you see is the scraps off people's plates. DISGUSTING, NEVER COMING BACK TO THIS PLACE.

I love this Foodstar - shits all over the Knox one. If you go when they open for lunch or dinner the food is all fresh & I haven’t ate anything I haven’t liked. They also have an amazing range for vegetarians.

Came here many times in the past because family and relatives wanted to come and eat here. This is cheap buffet, come here if you want to eat a lot but don't want to spend too much. Most of the food is oily, greasy, not good quality. You must pay first before you can go in. Good for family dinner that doesn't hurt the budget. Plus they are not rushy and don't care how long you stay for. 😀
Josephine
For the price you're paying, I think it's quite good. Don't expect it to be some fancy buffet because it's not. It's simple basic food. Most of the dishes are kept warm and quite fresh. I tend to steer away from the cold dishes because I'm not sure how long they have kept it. Kids love this place though! It's right up their alley

My fiancée and I dropped into Brimbank Plaza to have some slacks altered and were a little peckish, so visited the food court. However, when a kebab lunch pack cost more than $15 each I suggestted we head to you know where for those who know me well - a buffet restaurant hahaha... If we keep doing this we will both end up looking like the side of a house hehe.

Anyway, travelled about 15 minutes from Brimbank to Sunshine Food Star, which offered a wide selection of entrées, mains and desserts for $18.50 per head (lunch price). As you can see from the photos, I took small samples from many of the different foods on offer. I must admit that while I have heard Food Star get a bad rap from time to time, all of the food I ate was well cooked, tasty and not dry - which I couldn't say for Food Star Reservoir when we last ate there. I just loved the beef pie (which I hadn't seen here before), with a beautiful crispy puff pastry topping and melt in your mouth beef, and the fish dishes, noodles and honey and lemon chicken. With sushi, salads, a tender beef and pork carvery, chicken and corn, mushroom and pumpkin soups, a wide range of Asian (particularly Chinese) cuisine, we were so glad we took the time to travel here. But dinner will certainly be light tonight haha. Perhaps I won't even eat tomorrow!?#?

Came here after 7 years to reminisce my childhood. Food was just the same, average, bland and very oily. For the same price, you can probably get a decent meal about everywhere else.

Food seemed like it was sitting a while was cold and not much varieties available. Dont think ill be back again it has gone down hill not worth going to
Nick Richards
Average food that was cold and scary. Terrible inside and a funky outside. I think I'm going to vomit and spend the night in toilet. Yucky some kid just stuck his hand in the seafood. I'm never coming here again it's stinky crap and will make you sick . Garbage bin house

My family went here for dinner early last night, after a long busy day. (Literally first meal of the day for my partner and I) we paid shy of $70 for the 3 of us to find terrible food.
I was extremely disappointed to find the sunshine food star was nothing like the amazing Frankston food star experience I had. (The food there was great guys!)
The pizza was undercooked. All the peas, carrot and pumpkin were undercooked. The gravy was so watery it was pointless. They had only roast beef or ham. Which we're both dry. Their fried rice was worse and more dry than bad Chinese restaurant leftovers. The steamed fish was rubbery. The lasagna was cheap tasting, go to Woolworths if you want the equivalent/better. The salad was basic. No complaints, for the 3 ingredients. The fried fish was good. If you go here, that's your best bet.
The jelly was rubber - yes I've left jelly in the fridge for days and this was the consistency. The chocolate moose was very thinned. The custard tasted just plain off. The cookies were good (my 10y.o's review) but some were burnt on the bottom and they weren't) although he liked the stir fry noodles were great as was the very sweet honey chicken. Ok we probably had a couple of other things, but I can't think of them.
We went there for the variety and fact that after such a long day, it was there ready to eat, no waiting. Bad idea!
Yes, of course we got food poisoning. A 10 year old lethargic boy, throwing up, in tears, unable to eat, on his first full day at home with his mum on school holidays, not fun to watch, especially while my partner and I fight him for the toilet! So after the tummy settled a bit and the boy slept, I called the store. 4pm. And the store manager (and owner, he says) says that "well no one else called up saying they got food poisoning, could have come from anywhere, we can't tell it was from here" not to mention the comments he made about my lifestyle "maybe you shouldn't have fast all day and come to an all you can eat buffet" and "you should have a balanced diet and eating 3 meals a day, this wouldn't have happened" etc. so yes, I'm leaving a BAD REVIEW on this restaurant. For it's terrible food, and even more terrible customer service!
Thomas Ly
I don't get what all the negative reviews are about. Given the price you pay it is well worth what you get. The food there is basic takeaway food with plentiful variety. Don't expect gourmet food from a buffet with such a low price. If you're in need for a quick fix of "food court" style food then foodstar is your place. Foodstar for life.
Marithu Vo
The food is horrible
I love chicken corn soup and i have made it alot...however this chicken corn soup is full of corn flour - not recomended at all and so disappointed.
The food is not that great
Go to normal restaurant and have a better food
Most of the food might be not good to cook, left over, or expired one. Dont kill your stomach for those
Foodie Duo
Plates dirty and cutlery so glad the napkins were there for the taking so we could wipe everything before use.
For an all you can eat buffet is had a great variety. The food wasn't as bad as what I thought it would be. If you want a cheap all you can eat that has alright food it's good.
Singapore noodles and roast beef are recommended.
KevinTheHungryFoodie
This place is horrible, the food was lukewarm and I only went back here to decide to give it a try and reminisce my childhood. The food was also bland, not replenished fast enough to keep up with the service and the waiters weren't really attentive at all they were at times talking to one another, instead of clearing their tables.
Finally at their food stations the tongs were all dirty and often aren't cleaned and their premises wasnt really that well cleaned aswell.

Although it is a cheap place to eat.
I wouldnt come back here again.
It's been a few years since I've been to foodstar, and today I decided to do a pros and cons list as a review.

Pros:
-one of the cheapest buffets out there for a weekend dinner
-offered a variety of dishes (western and Asian food)
-conveniently close to where I worked
-some dishes upgraded for the better( like crab noodles)
-good for family gatherings
-conveniently close to village cinemas
-dishes came out fast

Cons:
-bad service
-food was either too oily, greasy or tasted quite average
-me and my sisters went to wash our hands multiple times because the utensils we used to grab food was quite sticky and dirty
-toilet was filthy
-desserts were quite limited (didn't tasted as good as other buffets)
-the plates that were supposedly clean, some plates didn't feel clean at all
-the place didn't look like it was cleaned well

Overall, I didn't find it as enjoyable as I did years ago. I think this is because , after I have experienced other food places, I realised that the food quality wasn't as good and was quite disappointing.

The most disgusting experience of my life was going to Food Star in Sunshine this Mother's Day. There was little or no food most of the time, and what was provided was terrible. When it came to having the dessert, none was left. And the icing on the cake was when I went to use the bathrooms, they were covered in filth, over the floors, the walls and the toilets. I had to ask six times and wait 30 minutes for them to clean it and was abused by the manager for inconveniencing the staff. NEVER AGAIN!
Liz
Went there for my birthday, the food wasn't too terrible, but I did go with low expectations. We were in the door fairly early but the food wasn't refreshed or replaced as it ran out. It was like they wanted all the food finished off, so if they limited your choices it was more likely they'd have no waste. They were fairly quick at the beginning to take our plates, but towards the end of our meal they let them pile up. I've been to better all you can eat buffets in the same price range. Disapointing
Henry
Same food days on. No change in the menu. But hungry people still goes there as it is the only buffet in the area.
Why not have a competitor to open another one
TyDoxas
This is not a modern Australian restaurant. It's a Chinese all you can eat restaurant with some spaghetti there. Plates and glasses were dirty. Food was horrible. Staff are un helpful I honestly don't know how this business is still open. You pay for what you get and its cheap to get in which is why the food is cheap.

this place seriously needs to be closed down. the hygiene standard is appalling!! The staff are rude as hell, and the food is GROSSE. everytime i walk past i see their only remaining loyal customers are extremely obese people or people coming for the seniors discount.
Dreamlikeidooo
Keep walking. Absolutely horrible, stopped on a whim and the lack of hygiene here just disgusting, half warm dried out gross food. I don't care how cheap it is Id rather keep walking to subway and get a six inch for five bucks full of fresher salad. This place is depressing and needs a visit from the health inspector stat !

Price vs Quality = Value. If you're expecting 3 michelin star cuisine, keep driving. If you are after yummy, plentiful food for less than $20...Stop on by. It's actually really good value because of the fact its cheap. I like coming here!

Crap crap and more crap. We went to food star sunshine before going to the movies it was the worst food I have ever had the service was what service we had to take our plates our selves never again going back there
Fightafish
An enticing restaurant. Came for the food, stayed for the marvelous atmosphere staff were so nice great personalities

Exceptional buffet at a wallet friendly price. I've heard some extremely bad review on this place and I cant seem to figure out why!!! This buffet is so exquisite, I could come here every day! Had a wide array of food such as pasta, fried rice and desserts, all made with expertise from some of the best chefs in Sunshine. It literally felt like I was a judge on masterchef, overwhelmed by the outstanding quality of the cuisines. Although ostentatious at times, all in all it is great place, with a friendly atmosphere for the family, especially for fathers day!! Would highly recommend to anyone all age and sizes! xx

Amazing food and amazing service. I went here recently and the food here was so much fresher than I thought it would have been! For just $16.50 at lunch! What a bargain! I couldn't stop eating, the staff were very friendly, I saw that some food that I was going for had run out and she kindly went to get more! The only problem I have with the place it makes me not be able to stop eating!
Amazing place and I highly recommend for any celebratory functions!
Cyper_dragon98
Amazingly tasty and fresh!! Food was so premium I could not stop eating. Wow, came here with friends and was absolutely blown away by the quality and freshness of all the foods! Food was so good that I could not help myself from eating so many plates, wow! Would definitely recommend any high school students finishing exams to make a trip here because it is the perfect place to celebrate. Good atmosphere, great vibes, lots of friendly people walking around. A++++++

Worst venue!!!. What a terrible dining experience! The service was appalling and the hygienic standards were below acceptable! Had to wait for food to be topped up and I will never return to this venue! They need the health inspectors to witness the poor quality!

This placed ruined my family.

Worst food ever!!!!. Went here for my sons birthday after finding there online pictures that made their food look appealing however once i got to the resturant it was like a feeding zoo loud crouded and disgusting some of the items tasted and smelt off there was no child friendly food items apart from chips and half melted ice cream and rock hard jelly the whole place was filthy and cover in food grime and dirt.
But the filth doesnt stop there our cups that we were given when old and had food on out side as if they had marely been rinsed and our softdrink was watery and flat ..... also asked for a reservation for 20 only to be given 10 seats in total with nowhere for a few of our guest to sit other than on the step ,also no plates or knife were supplied for cutting the cake all round waste of time money and left feeling like id let my son down on his birthday!!!
Outnabout
Dissapointed. Went once, waste of money. Food was very bland. Wont be back.

Quality or quanity? You choose. Unfortunately I cannot say good things about this place, very unhygienic and unappetizing. I see no point in going here the food quality is very poor and generic.
Angecat
Feeding Trough. This place is just horrendous! Why would anyone go there? Seriously! Its a feeding trough for the masses. Almost as bad as Watergardens Hotel. Snotty nosed kids everywhere, obese people stuffing themselves with substandard food that's been slapped together, overcooked or reheated in the microwave. Yucckkkk

Good food - value for money. I don't often eat in all-you-can-eat places ...but went here with my friends. I had been to Goldleaf before but did not realize this place was there in the shopping centre just behind.

This place has a simple decor...but for $16.50 ($14.50 for seniors) it is excellent value for money.
The Chinese food is good - better than most Chinese takeaways(Friend I ate with too used to own a Chinese restaurant and he likes the food there; my dad from overseas enjoyed the food too). Also it is not too salty (ie not that much MCG)
There is good variety..inc Western food, desserts, fruits, sushi, Vietnamese spring rolls, salads, coffee is also included in the price.
There are lots of tables so there is no pressure to move , and there is enough space around for kids and relatively secure too as there is only the front entrance and exit. Ample free car parking just outside(Village cinema carpark) is a big plus.

Overall the food here is better than the last all-you-can-eat I went to at Crown's...for a fraction of the price there.

Give it a miss. Kids were keen to try an "All You Can Eat Buffet". Even they were dissapointed. Food tasted rather bland. Daughter found a grub crawling around her strawberries. Pointed it out to the waitress who took the plate to the manager who then took it to the kitchen and didn't even bother to speak to us or offer an apology. Definitely won't be going back.
Reegsman
Scary. Never even been inside, walked past many times and seen all the creepy people inside sitting in the dark eating glow in the dark food. you can smell it from the carpark too (not a good thing :S). I aint dying to try it, and I reckon that could be a result of doing so !
Ariorf
The food looks and tastes like plastic. All terrible except neon lights
Stephen Fang
My thoughts. I found the place to be great value for money. The atmosphere was relaxed, informal and family oriented. Buffet selections offered lots of variety including an oriental buffet, a hot buffet and carvery and seafood and Asian dishes.
Faustus
Poor food - not worth the effort. Not as much of a variety as one would think. Dessert bar was pathetic. Decor is awful - think 1970s airport diner - very dated and bad fluro lighting. I won't even mention the state of the toilets. Having to carve up your own meat is unhygenic and puts you off. The tiny plates forces you to make trips up and down lik a yo-yo - which I suppose is the whole idea. in fact I think I ate less here than i would a normal restaurant. Don't bother - save your $20 odd dollars for something more worthwhile.
Oyster
Lack of substance. Buffet are defined to be "all you can eat" with a wide selection of foods you'd want to eat. However for the most of the night I found myself eating one or two dishes only. The lack of variety or delicious food is really a cop out.
V. Hoang
Warmed Bain maree food, on par with stuff you'd find in a food court. Big eaters that aren't too fussed with what they digest can eat to their hearts content.
