Review Sushi Ave - Surfers Paradise

I have to be brutally honest. It is not comparable to average sushi restaurants, especially on the Gold Coast. Very very small prices of sushi, Tuna pieces looked like off cuts, aburi scollops were not chargrilled at all. I don't expect a sushi chef working there but this place does not represent Japanese Sushi well. The price was higher than other Sushi place too. The only positive is that they were open when most of the restaurants around them were shut!

Restaurant was amazing with great authentic food. The staff were very efficient and helpful in terms of food ordering and payment. Loved the experience, truly a great restaurant.

This sushi train restaurant offers a good variety of sushi plates and is relatively cheap. Though they could have more choices for soup udons and ride bowl selections. Orders are fairly quick, not really that fast but good enough unless you are in a hurry. Unlike most sushi trains I had before, this restaurant charges for green tea (AU$1) which disappointed me a little. Nonetheless it was a good experience for me. Would definitely recommend!

Best sushi I have ever had in my life I was here for 4 days and I want back 6 times

Enjoyed our experience. The okonomiyaki was really lovely, fresh and a good portion size. The service was okay and we enjoyed the sushi we had. There was a lot of sushi, but not a wide range The best idea, is to purchase off the menu. That way you can watch them prepare your food and eat it fresh. The Gyoza was quite nice too. It’s a short walk from Cavill Ave tram station. Cross the road in the beach direction and walk underneath and through the building. .

The rudest owner ever that I have ever met. The worst customer service. The food came so long. Treated badly when we were about to pay. If I can give minus, I would, not even deserve one star. Will never ever come back.

Maybe it was because I arrive close to closing time (half an hour to go) but there wasn't many options to choose from the "rail train", which is sad since it is a "sushi train restaurant", but we still could choose from menu and order. One of the sushis I ordered was a Wagyu mozzarella nigiri and it was very bad. The wagyu was pretty thick and every time I tried to bit or even chew i could feel that meet was very hard. Have to say that I was very disappointed

Convenient location, popular sushi train joint, fairly affordable prices and a decently sized menu offering a generous sample of different Japanese dishes (ranges from sushi, sashimi, noodles, and platters). You are seated quickly and food was prepared promptly (hot dishes took around 10-15mins). Staff were serviceable and friendly, willing to make additional changes to dishes to our liking for a very small fee. I ate here twice and both times were equally as good. ⠀
⠀
The food is great for the price, however it understandably does not match higher end Japanese restaurants in terms of quality, ambience and taste.⠀
⠀
🍽 DISHES SAMPLED ⠀
❌CHICKEN KATSU WITH RICE | A little on the drier side in terms of chicken and didn’t have that mouthwatering taste or crunchy texture to it.⠀

⭕️SALMON WITH CHEESE MOZARELLA | Went a little overboard on the sauce which overpowered the salmon with saltiness. However the melted cheese and grilled salmon itself was delicious.⠀

⭕️KAKIAGE & TEMPURA UDON | The broth was done well and complimented both the kakiage and tempura.

Instagram: @sydneyfoodreviewer

Good environment. I ordered a tempura prawn udon and karage chicken udon. I forgot to request "meat on the side" so the crunchy tempura and chicken were soaked with the soup. But the good thing is i can order half bowl of udon so I can have some sushi. They have different kind of sushi available, taste good but the sushi fell apart when I ate with chopsticks. Obviously the sushi rice not sticking together (sushi itself cannot hold its shape) so sushi rice dropped to the plate, to the table, into the soysauce.....

Very low quality ingredients - salmon wasn’t fresh and smelled bad- dark avo- over priced - not fresh - unpleasant experience.

Delicious food and good prices. Easy to find location near Hilton hotel and a great selection here. Best sushi in Surfers Paradise! Will be back again for sure

Sushi and Udon were fine! The waitresses were so kind and they deliver everything quickly. And they have good price as well!

Located in the heart of Surfers Paradise area, it’ll be so easy to find this place!

This Japanese sushi train restaurant offers a big selection of sashimi, sushi, udon, donburi, tempura and vegetables. We ordered the udon, all kinds of sashimi and raw fish, edamame, chicken sushi, prawn sushi etc. everything was fresh. However service was lacking a little.

I order a combo and 14pc of sashimi and I was expecting some more. The sushi is nothing special. Never had tuna salad, fried chicken or chicken teriyaki in a sushi roll (don't intend to have more), so it was a bit weird to me. But maybe is something that they use to do in Australia. Sashimi pieces were very generous, but so tasteless and the tuna was a bit to hard. Pricey for the quality.

The restaurant is tucked away and a bit hard to find due to all the construction barriers. But if you do venture down the alley way, you’ll come across a good sushi restaurant.

The restaurant is pretty standard - nothing exciting. But the food tasted really fresh. I was pretty content with my choices. A good variety of dishes coming around on the train too.

Prices were not cheap, but that seems expected for sushi on the GC.

Would I go back? Yes.

Amazing feed. Everything I tried I literally loved. Tasted fresh and the service was great. Would have loved some sashimi by itself though. Everything can with rice.

Food was very fresh and timely. Very good service. Definitely one of the best sushi train restaurants in Surfers Paradise. Chicken mozzarella was my favourite. Highly recommend!

Great assortment of sushi and sashimi and all very fresh. I also tried the karaage chicken, which was nice and crispy and a good serving size. Went very well with a bottle of Sapporo beer.

Service was great, my cousin is allergic to seafood and they were extremely accomodating to her and made sure all her food was seafood free. Everything was delicious except the gyoza wasn't the best.

Ordered chicken teriyaki bowl and spicy pork bowl. The sauce is too thick and tasty. Not to mention additional mayo topping on chicken teri. Strongly not recommended for their bowl menu, unless you really like something over tasty.

I just tried sashimi here for the first time. I was scared but gave it a go! It was really fresh and the flavour was far more delicate than I expected. I even went back for seconds. The staff could have been friendlier but we still had a great time. Thank you.

***Sushi tastes nice- owner exploite staff, don´t give any tips!!***

Actually I used tor know and live with 2 people who have been working there. It´s a Sushi restaurant just in front of Hilton´s. Sometimes they brang sushi @ home so I/ we could try some leftovers and the taste was quiet good. I really liked the chicken and salmon-avocado sushi.

But do you know wich kind of people have 2 work there?

For 10 Dollars/hour, long unpaid breaks inbeetween the working hours/ kind of "black" -cash on hand "contract", have to work over 10 hours, don´t get more sallary @ weekend and public holidays, don´t have any paid holiday claim/ rights. Thats wide under the minimum wage and the inhumane working conditions in general against the law.

I know, the staff doesn´t get any tips by themselfes. Clients usually put it in a box and the staff has to put it in there as well. The owner just catches the whole tips by himself!!! (that´s quiet a good tax-free income for him :D )

The Owner offers a "trial"- 2 weeks 5 Dollar/hour -for the new staff so the new staff has to work at least 10 hours a day and the weekend as well. Because the new staff is cheaper though ;-)

Please go to another place where people don´t get exploited like that, and that "Sushi" hasn´t to do anything with real japanese Sushi (Sushi with chicken and mayonese hahahaha). The owner is even Corean! Bloody hell, it´s a shame to exploit people in such a place- a middle- class sushi restaurant just in the heart of Australian Surfers Paradise in front of Hilton´s and the beach!!! :-(

The sashimi was fantastic!!!!! Very very fresh!love the scollop and salmon and kingfish!!!! Well tuna was not my type tho. Great service, very welcomed, the guy who looked as a manager was very well explaining the taste of sashimi. Reasonable price as well. Highly recommend;)

I've been living in Surfers for 6 months, and whenever I've got a Japenese craving there isn't anywhere else worth considering.
Sushi here is better than a well-known chain around the Coast...the rice bowl dishes are delicious - personal favourite is the chicken katsu.
Wait staff are extremely welcoming and responsive to all requests (including the classicly embarrassing fork request).
Take a seat at the train, or take it to an outdoor table perfect for people watching the diverse tourists of the Gold Coast.

Came here a little unsure at first but once we had the food we were pleasantly surprised at how tasty and fresh everything was. The chefs were very clean constantly wiping and cleaning surfaces and the atmosphere was nice. We ordered some items fresh from the menu and the chefs didn't hesitate to make them for us even though it was circling around on the train. Our green tea was refilled every time it was finished for no extra charge.

The food is ordinary. Nothing special about it. However the sashimi platter is generous in proportion, value for the money. Very thick cut and very fulfilling.

Waitig staff was pretty clueless and lost. The sushi itself was ok, fish was fresh but I wouldn't say extraordinary. They tried to serve us the wrong plates several times and the actual dish came when we had already finished the rest of the sushi.

This is a warm sushi train fast food Japanese restaurant. Only go when your starving, otherwise look for next one. The restaurant is operating by Japanese but it doesn't fit any of the Japanese standard. Overcook sushi rice, and aged sashimi.

Only go when you have no choice.

This is one of the worst yet expensive Japanese meal I have ever had in the area. Not worth to try at all. Not sure how did they get the high rating in the past but certainly I will never go again.

This place is absolutely delicious and the best part is it is so fresh, the sushi chefs really take this seriously and it shows. Best sushi we have ever had. Highly recommended.

Waitresses a bit lost and had to ask a few times for drinks to be brought to table after ordering - when counting plates they seemed pretty inexperienced and took quite long.

Found it better to order from the menu for dishes we liked rather than selecting from the train. The fresher dishes will show steam under the lids - so those are good, otherwise other sushi is neither cold nor hot.

Best plates are
$3.90- $4.90

Overall satisfied but wanted more variety!

How did it get 87% on urbanspoon. Went to have lunch here because urbanspoon said this was voted 87%, how it got to that figure I have no clue. It wasn't all that impressive as other reviews have said. The fish was fresh enough yes but the selection wasn't that wide. The endamame was weird, miso soup was bland. Most of the "exciting" stuff was just the same things with fried puffs and sweet chilli sauce on top. For the amount it costs, I could get better sushi somewhere else

I went here once by accident when looking for another sushi place and I now go here at least once every two weeks. Good food, good service and good prices. The Takoyaki and Udon dishes are the best.

PROS: Pretty good taste. CONS: Inattentive wait staff, poor selection. Nice sushi but not a wide selection. That may be a once off given the tone of other reviews though. Wait staff not attentive for drinks. Pricing pretty standard for sushi trains.
BellaItalia
Super fresh and tasty. Good selection on the train. This is a great find on the coast.

Before this place, I have never been to sushi train. Sushi Ave was a wonderful first time experience! Great variety of sushi and the udon was delicious. It's hard to find a good sushi train in Melbourne so I often find myself wishing they had Sushi Ave here.

Literally the best Sushi Train style Ive ever eaten in Qld! Alcohol licenced as well with actual skilled sushi chef on board. Excellent, I rate this sushi place 8/10

Delicious Sushi. Sushi Ave is our favourite sushi place in Surfers Paradise, always very fresh and tasty. Friendly staff and masterful Sushi chefs. I enjoy the cheery music that is played in the background.
Highly Recommended.

So hard to find a decent Japanese eatery in Surfers. I found this gem by accident. I have been to a few "train style" restaurants and I must say this is very authentic. All sushi are meticulously made by hand by a sushi master. Nowhere do you see a sushi making machine. The udon is delicious as well, the soup is well balanced. The service is fantastic. I would definitely revisit this hidden gem.
Omnomaliciousfood
The menu is extensive with the usual sushi, handrolls, makis and sashimi. What was different about Sushi Ave is the incorporation of a Western influence in many of their dishes with cheese, mozzarella and asparagus as well as choices of nontraditional combinations such as ebi tempura and avocado sushi or the egg salad ship. Their most expensive plate being $4.90, the price is definitely affordable especially so considering their sushi had a healthy proportion of fish to rice. Salmon and avocado roll ($3.90) - had relatively large amounts of salmon Salmon sushi ($3.50) - Salmon was very fresh. Michael loves salmon so much he

What makes a delicioux sushi? Fresh Fresh Fresh Sashimi! And sushi rice with the right amount of Japanese vinegar and sugar! Even how a chef presses the sushi rice into nigiri between the palms of his hands is a technique which takes years to master! Traditionally only males are allowed to be a sushi chef (why?!) because they thought women’s temperature fluctuate a lot and this subtle change of temperature would change the flavour of the sushi rice when they press the rice between the palms! How serious it is! Recently we found a new sushi train at Surfers Paradise and it was pretty good Hotate (raw scallop) and Himachi (yellowtail) are my favourites! Avocado Roll, Inari and Deep-fried Chicken Katsu Nigiri are Mr F and Little Monster’s “non-raw-food” selection. We’ll definitely come back to try the other sushi selection next time! Sushi Ave Address: G21, Hilton High Street, 3113 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise Q4217 Phone: 07 5539 9888
