Review Flame Greek Tavern - Surrey Hills

Wow!! The service was great. The waiter had a sense of humour. The food was amazing. The meat delicious. The Greek coffee was so good, I had two. Everything I ate tasted delicious . I don't usually give reviews. I am fussy. Eating here made me happy. : )

Easily the best authentic Greek restaurant in the eastern suburbs. I've eaten the lamb souva, moussaka and rice custard... excellent excellent excellent!!! Soooo flavoursome. Definitely my go to for Greek food. Wish I found this place ages ago.

A treat to taste buds! Ordered the chicken skewers with traditional Greek salad which was the yummiest dish I ever had. Lovely staff and to top it off authentic Greek Food. Must visit if you live in the vicinity!

Celebrated my wife birthday tonight in lockdown with my children and very so happy with the delicious food I ordered from the Greek restaurant in balwyn. Very nice quantity and top quality of the cuisine. Beautiful Greek salad too. We even got Easter biscuit. So lovely of the owners. Regards Patrick

Anyone saying it’s THE BEST Greek food they have are definitely not Greek It’s ok!! Decor is in need of a refresh and the food is just ok !

Good for takeaway souvlaki and dining in, we celebrated easing of lockdown restrictions with a phone order for takeaway. Chicken souvlaki was yum, though I felt it required more seasoning. I have eaten in here with mum and family on mother's day several years back and they celebrated all ladies by giving them a gift pack, which was nice and inclusive.

No better Greek cruisine in Melbourne. Just love it. This is our go to place in Melbourne. The dips are home made to traditional recipes, the lamb souvlaki is the best ever and I mean ever.
Prasad Gunatunga
Great food and always a pleasure to dine in.

Really love coming to the Flame Greek Tavern - have been a regular for nearly 17 years, either for take away or dine in - food is always of a very high standard, same staff (which says a lot), highly recommend (average decor, but don’t let this put you off) - 5 star food and service

We’ve been coming here for years. Consistent and delicious. Decor a little dated but you don’t eat decor! It’s our go to comfort food restaurant.
Also very close to an excellent wine shop so you can pick up a good Shiraz!

Warm friendly atmosphere, with a friendly welcoming smile...I don’t think so...the surly waitress who greeted us is seriously in the wrong business. On the whole the food was good but pricey. The staff were literally running between tables as they were understaffed. The place is tired, with NO Greek atmosphere and the state of the chairs are appalling. Go somewhere else...anywhere else..won’t be back

Came here on the weekend as we wanted to try our local Greek Restaurant .

We ordered the saganaki, trio of dips, mixed grill and the moussaka . The saganaki was cooked well and had a nice flavour, we didnt so much enjoy the dips as the bread that came with it was extremely oily and the dips were very cold and did not taste very fresh .

The moussaka was very rich ( which I like) the eggplant flavor was not prominent but the bechamel on top was really nice. The mix grill was so so , the lamb meat was tender and juicy

The mains did take a long time to come out

From start to finish, my experience here was perfect. The food was delicious, meat cooked perfectly! And the salad had the perfect amount of dressing. The service was fantastic also! Greeted with a warm hello and a smile (just the way I like it) overall 100% would return :) good wholesome food

Shame but it should only be a takeaway shop, it’s not restaurant quality especially for the overpriced meals, sadly I disappointed my kids as we were hoping for good Traditional Greek food, oh well better luck next time :(
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Take a evening stroll down the Surrey Hills section of Whiltehorse Road on any given day around 6pm, your nostrils would be joyously inhaling the aromas of spit roast meats and grilled seafoods emanating from Flame Greek Tavern. The olfactory experience just gets my gastric juices on over drive and I'm sure I look like my dogs, unconsciously licking my lips as I saunter past. So after a few occasions of strolling past, Kiddo and I decided to stop there to grab some take away.

Flame Greek Tavern must only continue to exist because of loyal clientele who have no other Greek restaurants within a few kilometres.

We waited 40 minutes for our takeaway meal.
We ordered:
4 prawns @ $6.00 each - when prawns are this expensive you have pretty high expectations. Unfortunately they were overcooked and lacked flavour.
A small tray of sardines - terribly overcooked and they were over salted.
A small tray of Lamb gyros - dry and overly salted.
Pitta bread - lovely.
Greek salad - OK.
Potatoes - seriously lacking in flavour. They weren’t even seasoned. It turns out the oil they are sitting in is just, well, oil.

Overall I was very very disappointed at the ~$110 we paid for the above.

There is a lack of Greek cuisine in this area. But if you have the chance to go to other Greek restaurants I would suggest you do so. I suspect this place is only popular through loyalty & lack of competition. Try some in Swan St Richmond and also in High St, Kew.

If you think this is authentic Greek, then you are not Greek.

I hope the owner, who has obviously been running this restaurant for many years, also tries some other well-respected restaurants, to realise that she should be doing more to represent traditional Greek food.

13 of us had mother's day lunch here today. Service was impeccable and food was marvellous. Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone. Very highly rated

Not generally a fan of Greek. Find it pretty bland.
But I like it here. The food is prepared by the ladies in the kitchen with much love and it shows. All the dishes are great.
But its stock standard Greek. No surprises. But who cares if its done well?

Love this place. eat in or take away I am always happy. friendly staff and the lamb souvlaki is truely the best I have had...never disappointed. If eating in, you must try the whitebait..a squeeze of lemon and your in heaven.

Enjoyed a family dinner here on Friday night, cozy place with lovely ambience, Compares to sitting in your own house. Dips are all home made and delicious, great Saganaki, grilled octopus and sardines all done very well. Gyros is wonderful and all round very satisfying meal. Is a little pricey or have the take away option as we often choose as the food is always good. A regular choice for our family as suits most tastes.

Flame Greek Tavern. Extremely disappointed. The service was just ok, the food was very pricy for the amount they served and the taste was average. The desserts were extremely pricy!!! Other restaurants don't charge that much for the food and the quality is better. I won't be going back.

Saturday night take away. Very nice take away meal, the lamb was beautifully cooked over charcoal with plenty of flavour. The veggies and potato bake were nice and the baklava finished us off. We will definitely go back there.

Always enjoy our take away.. Haven't eaten in but regularly enjoy take away. The meat balls and stuffed capsicums are our favourites.
Recommend.

So Disappointed. I went to Flame for a number of years, however, on our last experience the size of the serves had been reduced dramatically. To the extend I inquired if the salad was for the 4 adults or were we getting one bowl each! To my dismay it was for the four of us. All servings had been reduced from our previous visits and the price had gone up substantially. No longer value for money. A shame because we had been regulars. Now looking for another good Greek restaurant. Lindos at East Ringwood or Niko's in East Ringwood too are now much better.

It's Nice. Order a gyros and watch the matriarch , a love ly lady, prepare it for you with care and love, and then look at you with those eyes of history, and receive your food from the family of sons and grand kids, you know it's a lovely place, where the lady lives to come to work to make het traditional Greek food. It's comfy inside, good take away for the family, the staff are efficient and with the lady living for the restaurant, one could do a lot worse

So Tasty!. Don't judge a book by it's cover. It may look dated and a little messy, but the food is divine.

We ordered take away for the first time for dinner and absolutely enjoyed it. Authentic and very clean.
Yumyum
Great Greek. This is a regular for us. Great food, the service is always great and the owner is incredibly inviting. lamb cutlets and fresh made dips (especially tarama) are highlights and for take away, best souvlakis in the east!

Awesome. I drive 20 k's to get there, says it all i guess.

Flame Greek Tavern. Extremely disappointing on several levels. Meals we ordered- Baby Snapper and vegetables, Lamb wrap, Chicken open wrap, Lamb with salad, marinated octopus, all lacked the authentic 'Greek Charcoal' flavorings and tastings rendering all the meals unsavory and bland. Ambience-setting outdated (1980's) dining chair fabric was discolored, stained and unravelling in sections and hard and uncomfortable to sit on for long periods. Pricing was very expensive and well over priced for quantity and quality of food and presentation. For 2 adults and 2 children was $214. Positive point, staff were friendly and service was quick and efficient. Would not return or recommend.

I really like the food at this place and the owner is super friendly but find it quite expensive for what you get. Take away is definitely a better option as you get the same tasty meals but it is much cheaper..They have really nice stuffed capsicums and lovely dips and gorgeous pita bread..The open souvlaki is great and perfect to share. But eating in can be costly. Decor is a little dated but everything is very clean and tidy. We will definitely be back, even if it is just for take away!
Timoth
Amazing food. Forget the dated decor and Bain Marie, this is awesome authentic Greek food with helpful attentive staff. Great one for young families.

Fast service and good food. Highly recommend the mixed platter. The only downside is I would'be liked more vegetables with the mixed platter
AJ
Authentic home style cooked Greek food - cooked with passion. Sophie is a gem; genuine & family oriented and she always treats the kids with a lollipop too. You have to try her Apple & Pear Bougatsa

Beautiful food. Only worth taking away though, eating in is too pricey!
The Eater
Good Greek food, decor is basic and foodwarmer at front makes it look cheap. Excellent for take away though.

The inner decor and overall ambiance of flames was a bit scary. Over all the food was pretty good tho.
Zoo Kini
One of the best Greek restaurants in Melbourne. Excellent food. Highly recommended.

Flame Greek Restaurant. We love this restaurant!!
The staff are lovely - Sophie (the boss) is divine and will always try and give you precisely what you would like.
They are most considerate about both the elderly and the young - there's room for everyone.
Oh - and by the way - the food is really good. I specially like the lamb cutletts and the rice pudding is to die for.
