Never disappoints, bookings essential as they are either full or out of ducks. Food is fresh and nice, only thing from 5 stars is sometimes a lack of staff. Prices very reasonable, highly recommended.

We ordered one duck pak choy and fish toufu in claypot. The duck and fish toufu are great. Not a fan of pak choy and bean shoots though. Overall it is a nice dinner. If you like Peking duck then I recommend this place.

Been here many times, when ever I feel like Peking duck, this is one if restaurant I would come to. I like how the duck is cut at your table, I prefer the duck skin to be more crispy and feel sometime the duck soup is abit watery. But food is still good and the price is good too.

Great service and great value. Ordered a Peking duck 3 course meal.

The guy that served us was absolutely hilarious. He was wearing earpods when he served us and occasionally was spotted sipping wine with his mates there laughing out loud. He still gave decent service and for a cheap eats I don’t expect much when it comes to service.

Quick and straight forward service.

Lovely Chinese restaurant in Surry Hills, that is always booked out!

Very simple interior, with large tables for big groups & a few pieces of artwork on the walls.

The peking duck dish served here is by far the best dish. The duck always has a crispy skin & juicy flesh. The pancakes they’re served with are thin, and perfect to wrap the duck in with spring onion, the tasty sauce & cucumber.
Other yummy dishes here include the dry noodles that are served with roasted duck meat & the mongolian beef.

Service is good, but nothing very special or personalised.

Old Kingdom is a great spot to get Peking Duck if you’re in the area. The Peking duck is always tender and the skin is super crispy.

When you order the duck, you also get soup and noodles. My favourite noodle they do is their crispy noodles with the duck and bean sprouts on top so make sure to save room for that!

The food comes out super quickly too! They have a bit of parking right next to their restaurant as well.

Came here with a bunch of friends to try. We normally go to Simon’s Peking Duck and thought we would try this place out. The duck was quite nice and juicy, we ordered three ducks for the party of seven. The duck was the highlight of the meal, the noodles were pretty average and the soup not great. Five stars for the duck only!

The main highlight here is their reliably delicious Peking duck at a reasonable price. The duck is prepared to perfection (i.e. the skin is delectably crispy and enticing). The pancake skin used to wrap the morsels of addictive duck meat is beautifully thin. The soup is slightly peppery but still yummy and it's a delicious way to clear the sinuses.

They have a great variety of other dishes which are also of a high standard. Booking a spot is essential and they only accept cash.

Old Kingdom serves food fit for royalty!

Wow! Wow! Wow! There are as many versions of "Peking Duck" as there are of roast chickens! The ones served here (and at its "sister-branches" around Melbourne) are definitely THE BEST OF THE BEST! The restaurant is filled by 5.45pm every night and Peking Duck is served at every table, the only difference is "how many ducks per table"! It's a Peking-Duck-Institution .... a MUST for all duck lovers!

Ah, Old Kingdom, old memories.... How can I forget enjoying my first ever Peking duck in Melbourne at their Collingwood outlet more than 10 years ago.

Not realising they had another branch closer to where we live until recently, naturally I wanted to relive those memories once I found out. Rocking up at 12pm on the dot, reception was rather cold initially, but after a casual banter with Alan the owner, we found him to be rather personable.

The section we were seated at was a little drab and tired looking. With chairs stacked up in almost every corner and right at the front door, the venue felt neglected and messy.

Already deadset on the 3-course Peking Duck Banquet, it didn’t take us long to browse the full menu and decide: adding on two à la carte entrees of Sesame King Prawns and Stuffed Scallop Shells.

Per name, the prawn entree led us to anticipate a dish consisting of whole plump prawns. Instead, it turned out to be a sesame prawn toast, which suited my partner just fine as it was one of his favourite small eats. Frankly, I didn’t mind it either. The second entree left little to be desired as the bits of scallops were very chewy albeit tasty.

Arriving at the table in its glistening, dark tanned skin, the duck looked and smelt quacking great! With some theatrical carving done in less than 30 seconds, we immediately got into action. First off, separating the thin pancakes called for delicate fingers as they tore quite easily upon the slightest impatience, but once detached, they held well. The duck meat was firm but moist and the skin was crispy, exuding just enough fat with every crunch. Yum!

Next up were the Stir Fried Beanshoots with Shredded Duck Meat and Salted Vegetables & Duck Soup. For an extra $8, we took on the ramen option with the stir fry and I’m glad we did because I was famished. My partner who’s not quite a soup drinker left me more than half a big bowl to which I happily polished off together with the remaining share of his noodles.

In comparison to our current favourite Peking duck place, the taste and execution here wasn’t quite on par, but it sure didn’t shy far and certainly left me waddling my way out with a full and content belly.

Old Kingdom is renowned for peking duck. We ordered 4 ducks between 12 people. The skin was crispy. The duck noodles had great texture and soaked in duck juice. The fried rice was average. Although the restaurant decor is dated, the food was a redeeming factor. They have two dinner sessions, 6pm and 8pm.

3.5 star ⭐️ I couldn’t believe I have never ever been to Old Kingdom ever. I love Peking duck and people kept telling me it’s good, and I didn’t really believe them.

We had the duck three courses for $58 + $8 noodles.

The duck with pancake and it was really good. The skin was crispy, the meat was fresh and tender. My complaint was that the pancake was so sticky and they stuck to each other. I wasn’t sure whether it’s supposed to be super thin or super thick cos they are stuck together. Also there wasn’t enough cucumber 🥒 to go with the pancake.

The duck soup was ok, it was nice but a bit too peppery.

The duck stir fry was great cos we paid an extra $8 to stir fry it with ramen noodles. That was quite yummy.

I am still dreaming about it now and would love to go there again some time.

Things to note before coming to this restaurant:
1) have to book table in advance - very popular place!
2) cash payment only!
3) one Peking duck is big enough for 3-4 adults.
4) you have to pre-order the duck when you call to book the table
5) they will start “chasing” you out after 1.5 hours there so it’s not a place to chit chat after meal.

Would still recommend this restaurant for their yummy Peking duck. 👍🏼👍🏼

Who doesn't like peking duck am i right?

Though the place is not super extravagant, and it is quite cramp, but they do serve up pretty good peking duck. May need to pre-order before heading there, to ensure you have the quantity you need for your group of diners.

The duck is super juicy and tender (making me drool just thinking of it). If you've never had peking duck, and you're around the Eastern side of Melbourne, do make a trip here as it'll be worth it.

The other mains that come with the banquet (set with peking duck) is average, though their soup is pretty good.

😱Lizzie’s first impression: the restaurant is literally isolated by itself but don’t let the looks fool you - it was absolutely packed even on a Monday night! A great place for Peking duck and it’s cooked three ways - the wrap the soup and then either noodles or rice!

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the Peking duck is fresh, it’s roasted perfectly - the meat is tender and juicy and the skin is crispy and not too fatty. The Peking duck is the special here and you can’t go without ordering it.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the wrap of the Peking duck is a little too big for my liking, and they should provide more cucumbers and greens next time. (Although I’m sure they’ll give me more if I asked)

🥇Lizzie rates overall: I absolutely loved it and the service was not bad for a busy Chinese restaurant.

Just a really good Peking duck restaurant. Fairly simple decor on the inside, because the focus is all on the food. If ordering a duck, I recommend opting for the ‘crispy noodles’ (more flavoursome) over the ‘soft noodles’.

Succulent and perfectly cooked Peking duck. The service was incredible, super efficient at setting up after the first session and the staff were good humoured for the rest of the night. The first duck was sliced at our table. Absolutely delicious. The soup was also very fragrant and we were offered an additional bowl when we finished the first. Evidently a popular dinner spot as it was booked out and continuously bustling all night. Would love to return.

Must visit this place if you crave thin and crispy skin Peking duck served on pancakes, but don't mind the no frills service.  The whole duck is sliced by the staff in front of diners, as is done traditionally with this dish.

This venue is usually busy, and it's not spacious, but their service is prompt.

The restaurant occasionally runs out of ducks, so call the restaurant a day or two beforehand to reserve a table and the Peking ducks to avoid disappointment.  One duck should be enough for two persons if you order other dishes as well, like their crispy noodles.

This is one of the best Peking duck specialty places in Melbourne, so it's worth the hassle of trying to find parking in a residential area.  If you want Chinese food but don't like Peking duck, their other menu items are OK but not worth the travel for unless you live locally.

Eaten here a few times...always on special family events.
3-course meal with Peking Duck consists of:
Salted Vegetable and Duck Soup was delicious.
Stir Fry Beanshoots with Shredded Duck Meat is delicious.
Crispy Peking Duck wrapped with pancake, cucumber, and spring onion, dipped with homemade sauce is ok. The pancake is very thin, which is good. The homemade sauce is a bit salty. The Peking Duck skins are crispy but it lacks the duck fats...this Peking duck is crispy with lean meat. I prefer duck with plenty of fat for this dish.
Steamed Fish with Ginger and Spring Onion was delicious.
Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab - a bit too oily and salty.
Live crab - stir fry with noodles is a bit of a hit and miss. The meat always tastes fresh but on occassion you get a crab with meat stuck to its shell...very hard to pry off.
Seafood Combination Tofu Clay Pot - seafood is fresh but sauce is salty.
Place is always busy... Staff run off their feet!
Always have to park on street...sometime not enough car park nearby, have to park further. Beware of cars on Canterburry Rd.

The Peking Duck here always lives up to expectations.  Maybe it was because there were 14 of us and there was a bit of wine for lunch, but we had a really great time. The ducks are cooked perfectly with crispy skin and are expertly sliced by your waitress.  Following the delicious make-your own pancakes, comes the spicy duck soup with tofu, dished up by your waitress and then the crispy noodles, bean shoots and shredded duck.  A very sustainable meal with nothing going to waste!

Peking duck here is amazing! Cooked beautifully and the skin is as crispy as you can imagine. It’s definitely one of the better Peking ducks you can have here in Melbourne! I would normally add on the crispy noodles to the stir-fry beanshoots, as the dish reminds me a little of those combination crispy noodles with egg gravy dishes! Love the hot and sour-ish soup as well. Also you can ask to takeaway extra duck bones if you want to make your own soup/stock at home as they have plenty.
Do note that this is a very busy restaurant and it can get a little cramped and noisy. Remember to make a reservation if you don’t want to wait for your table and payment is CASH only. Ultimately, if you’re just here for the good food, you won’t leave disappointed :)

Old Kingdom is renowned for its Peking duck and we certainly were not disappointed. We ordered the Peking duck banquet with added egg noodles, sharing 2 ducks between a party of 5. This was enough for us as some had a small appetite, but our understanding is that usually one duck between 2 people is recommended.

The Peking duck was perfectly cooked, the skin was so thin and crispy and the meat was succulent. It was also expertly carved with no awkwardly hacked up pieces, which added to the presentation of the dish. We found the amount of condiments and pancakes to be sufficient to match the duck. A special mention to the pancakes, we were impressed with how thin they were! The duck soup was lightly spiced and had tofu in it, nothing memorable. The duck and bean sprout noodles were quite enjoyable, especially since the noodles were deep fried and this resulted in crunchy bits along with softer noodles where they were mixed in with the gravy sauce.

Service was efficient, and the restaurant was clean and warmly lit with a better ambience than the other Old Kingdom which we found to be relatively gloomy. It was very loud, busy and a little cramped, but perhaps this is a sign of a good restaurant. We will be coming back when our duck cravings arise again!

We ordered two duck , it comes in three course.1.duck skin with wrap and vegetables, a bit different from authentic Peking duck in china ,the sauce is more sweet , I n China should be more cucumber and leek served with it. Anyway the duck skin is crispy and taste not too bad .my friend can finish whole duck by himself.2.duck meat stir fry with bean sprout, I love this dish , not too greasy with a hint of sweetness.3 the duck bone soup with pickled vegetable.
We ordered extra stir fry rice and another stir fry green vegetable . All good!

Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
We ordered succulent and juicy pieces of Peking duck that was full of flavour. Skin was crispy and delicious. Plum sauce also enhanced the flavour of the duck and we also requested fresh chilli to bring some heat to the meal (but that was down to personal taste). We preferred the ramen as an additional choice and thoroughly enjoyed the duck bone soup.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Service was quick staff were attentive.

Price: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
The Peking duck banquet charges $58 per duck (increased from the uploaded menu). It was noted that a good amount of duck meat was left on the bone so it felt a little wasteful that it went towards the soup instead of the peking duck to pancake experience. Just a note that Old Kingdom only accepts cash so be prepared to have some cash on hand.

We went out with my family to try Old Kingdom at Surrey Hills. They have been a couple of times and had assured me that the Peking duck was better than our usual go to place.  Now here’s the thing.. I’ve noticed that my taste buds and my family’s have had some disagreements as of late, so I was a little skeptical to say the least. A food lover approaches food with an open mind, and if these guys are as good as my family says, I will admit so.

Old kingdom has been our family go to restaurant for many years and it never disappoints.
It’s always very busy here especially on Friday and Saturday nights so I’d recommend that you book.
They specialise in their famous Peking duck, so it’s a must when you’re here. The duck comes in 3 courses for $58 (duck with pancakes, soup and stir fry bean sprouts). We added an extra $8 for the crispy egg noodles which complimented the dishes.
The duck was brought to our table where they cut into thinly sliced pieces for us and the remaining were brought back into the kitchen to be prepared for our soup, noodles and bean sprouts for later.
The duck was moist and full of flavour. The skin was crispy and complimented well with the pancakes, cucumber slices and spring onions.
Their serving of cucumber and spring onions I have to say was disappointing, as it’s not a lot to share among 4 of us as they were tiny. Having said that, the duck was delicious and juicy. It was definitely the star of the show.
I would highly recommend coming here for their Peking duck.

The peking duck is quite delicious as you would expect and you can see them slice the duck on your table if you are lucky. The sauce is quite runny and not so thick. The portion of crispy egg noodles makes a filling addition and is very tasty. In terms of atmosphere its actually more fun at Simon's peking duck.

There is a dish called salted egg batter prawns and it is the best tasting prawn dish around. This place has old seating and it is hard like sitting on tiles. Also in some areas they squeezed the tables so close together so a few people need to get up and move to allow someone on the inside to leave.

The actual peeking duck itself is 十/十 but everything else is only okay lol sorry!!! Haha XD still giving 4 stars because I haven't had better peaking duck in Aus.. Only minor complaint is that they kinda rushed the serving of the dishes. While I appreciate prompt delivery, it doesn't really work if you put down all 3 dishes on a table which can barely fit 2 dishes. Minor penalty because it's a chink restaurant and that's what you should expect anyway.. Woo 中國第一

Delicious peking duck!

Four of us were here on a Saturday evening without a booking in advance and were told to wait another hour for a table. When we were about to leave with sad faces luckily a group of diners got up and left, woohoo!

We got ourselves the most popular dish which is the whole peking duck made into 3 courses. The first course was the peking duck with pancakes, coupled with some leek and cucumber pieces. The duck skin was thin, the marinate was not too salty or sweet, the meat was juicy, and there wasn't too much oil. Pancakes were light, firm, and thin. Overall, probs one of the better peking duck places in Melbourne.

The second dish we got was the duck fried noodles with beanshoots. The noodles were crispy, the sauce was balanced, and if you absolutely hate beanshoots like Luke, it was a surprise delight since we didn't get the usual strong beanshoots taste but just a light hint.

The last course was the duck soup with veggies and tofu. The soup was balance in flavour, lightly sweet and tasted good overall.

Service was quick, the place was quite packed at night so book your table in advance!

How can an easy clear duck soup be BLAND?
Ducks are okay, so are those noodles.

Their Ducks are much better now ....Dining-wise, this venue is the preferred one, out of the two Old Kingdoms, even with the other Peking Ducks specialist down the road (the original Old Kingdom owner).Spacious and a big table of 16 is available, it can fit all of us, however, they must forget our booking as they split us into two tables tonight, a bit disappointed.Food wise, they've ironed out most of their issues, ducks are much better, not as dry as our previous visits, Peking Ducks are special. It comes with a serve of Soup and Crispy noodles for $8 extra, they are yummy too, no Bean-shoots Duck stir fry this time.Service is still ordinary, very tentative in getting those basic things like wine glasses, water, Chinese tea (refilling it), chillies, etc.Still value for money at $60 for a serving of a full duck, even at extra $8 for noodles.BYO at $5/bottle is reasonable too.Much better, will come back again for another round of ducks, thank you. Very good Peking duck. But that's it!! Definitely feed 3 adults ~~~ everything else is a bit too pricy.. one thing is very important to mark them from 4 to 3.5 is the restaurant is way too noisy and I can't even hear anything that my friend was talking! Had dinner there on a Saturday. It was extremely busy and crowded. A bit noisy, hard to hear each other. So not recommended for a romantic night out. Most diners are Asian, which is a good sign showing good Chinese food is served.

When you ring up for table reservation, order the number of ducks you need. Between the 4 adults and 4 children, we had 2 duck meals with noodles. The duck skin was very crispy, may be fried? It was nice in pancakes. Kids really enjoyed them. Service was very fast and efficient but not so friendly. Everything happens so fast, like a production line. Food was nice, but not very relaxing.

We didn't make reservations on a busy Saturday night, but we only waited 10 minutes or so for a table which wasn't too bad. Quick service, friendly and quite attentive staff, we got the peking duck between two deal, the waitress chopped/sliced the duck infront of us which was pretty cool. I felt the cucumber/onion pieces are a little small/short, other than that it was delicious! The duck wasn't too fatty and the other dishes they make with the leftover meat and bones were tasty. I also got hot and sour soup on the side because I was craving it and it was very satisfying. Would definitely come back!

I was still shocked about the fact that this place was cash only in 2016. Don't get me started about the service or lack of service. All I am going to say is rude and unpleasant. The food was he only good thing. It was pretty good. So if you don't mind about the service go ahead and give this place a try. With so man Chinese restaurants around I think they really need to make more of an effort.

Years ago after enjoying old kindom in smith st I tried the surrey hills restaurant and was appalled at the service and vowed never to return. I revisited after being invited to a meal with friends and the experience was very different. The service was pleasant, polite, efficient and the food was delicious. A surprise but also a lesson in forgiveness will probably return!

I am extremely poor at taking photos when I am hungry. We come to eat Peking Duck every couple of months (probably because its so unhealthy) and we like this place because the duck actually has crispy skin! There’s a few places that do peking duck and often the skin is not crispy. However, this place has a reputation for crispy skin and we suspect its possibly because they deep fry it!

Peking duck with its crepe and sauce was simply delicious. Crispy skin and meat was juicy. The duck with egg noodles was very tasty and the noodles tasted fresh. My only dislike was the tofu soup... it tasted like tofu in boiled water and lacked flavours from the infused herbs and duck carcass.

Yum, yum, and again YUM.

So this is how it works. Book in advance and in doing so they will ask you how many ducks you want. Yes this place is all about duck. You can order something else and go another route. But when the peking duck is this good, and this affordable....

Peking duck banquet extraodinare, yes please. You want to carve up the duck for me whilst at the table, okay I won't complain... Please go ahead. Oh duck broth and noodles with duck and sprouts too. Wow I realise this is a traditional banquet for the elite, after trying to eat all of it. I'm rolling out of the door on cloud nine.

Are you dear reader still sceptical? Is it really that good? Let me think... YES. But hey don't take my word for it, book for yourself and order a duck.

Note: How much duck? Um well how hungry are you? My recomendation is 1 duck for 3 adults. 2 ducks for up 6 adults and so on.

Enjoy

The duck was absolutely scrumptious! I also thought it was extremely well priced, $66 for a duck 3 ways with noodles added, generously fed 2 people. Service was fine but the toilets were freezing and "cash only" is a bit annoying. Nevertheless, loved it and will be back!

One of the best Peking duck (Melbourne's version) in town, 3 course menu (1 whole duck) for $55, which can fit 2-3 people. We ordered 4
Ducks, 3 other dishes (fish, fried rice and salted egg chicken) to cater 11 ppl on Mother's Day. I highly recommend u come here for just the duck, it is amazingly juicy and well roasted. The rest of the dishes was ok, average.. Look at the pics!

Crispy peking duck with warm pancake!
3 courses for less than $60 and there is alot for 2 ppl. Duck is crispy outside and juicy meat. Can be pretty oily sometimes but ooohh let us be naughty sometimes and just enjoy this yummy duck! I prefer to have the crispy noodle for the second course rather than just the beanshoot. I have been to the other one at Smith st and they are equally good.

Peking duck was great as per usual, although the duck was a bit tough. The entrees of spring rolls and curry puffs which don't come with the three course duck special were amazing. Best curry puffs, which I highly recommended.
The soup was spicy although it has never been before, which was a bit of a disappointment as i love the soup. I also recommend having the noodles with your second section of the duck deal, and asking for them crunchy! Delicious! Simons in Footscray although a tiny bit more expensive is better in my opinion.

To add to the the debate of which restaurant has the better Peking duck, Simons or New Kingdom? No doubt this will boil down to personal choice I feel. I prefer the duck at New Kingdom. Reasons are that the crepe is thin, non oily and doesn't feel like it's going to break when it's in your hands. The skin of the duck is crisp and yummily crunchy. The accompanying duck soup was peppery and smooth. Overall, a great experience. Not a fan of the decor but hey, we came here to eat after all.

There's a eastern suburb debate on whether Old Kingdom or Simon's has the best Peking Duck. There are people to go either way and it's a personal preference thing - I've been to Simons 5x now and Old Kingdom 2x, and have decided that they are both good in different ways. All times I've had the Peking duck meal. In terms of the duck, they are equal in taste and value. Both are stingy on the cucumber and spring onion, I've always wanted more than one in each pancake but they literally only give you enough for one per pancake. I prefer the sauce in Old Kingdom, the Simons one is a tad sweet for me. The duck meal also comes with soup, and while the Simons one is bland, the Old Kingdom one is flavorful. However, the bean sprouts I had today was quite disappointing. There were no noodles, and the flavor was seriously lacking that we had to ask for chilli sauce to improve the taste. The homemade noodles at Simons are amazing; it's got a beautiful duck flavor, it's saucy and a perfect combination of bean sprouts, noodles, duck meat and sauce. The service for both places are quite similar, the staff at Old Kingdom are slightly friendlier but both places are rushing you to get out so they can fit in as many customers as possible. Service is ok - the staff bring you the food, take away your plates and respond to your requests but otherwise you don't really interact much with them. Both places require booking a duck in advance.

In summary for Simons vs Old Kingdom:

Duck: Equal
Soup: Old Kingdom
Noodles/bean sprouts: Simons
Service: Old Kingdom (slightly)

For me personally, Simons' noodles and location makes it my preferred Peking Duck place. However Old Kingdom is equally as good and I would recommend it all the same.

I had the duck banquet. Really nice and crispy and not overly oily. We had 1 duck between 2 people and it was definitely too much. I think to be comfortably full you'd need 1 duck between 3-4. It's a bit of a bummer that it's cash only though and the service wasn't that friendly. But all in all a good experience.

Peking duck is amazing - DIY light crepes with crispy rich duck pieces and garnishes. I fill up on the Peking duck every time and leave little room for the soup and stir fry. The soup is deliciously peppery. You have the option to add noodles to the duck stir fry.
Other notable delicious dishes are the mapo tofu, beans with mince, Szechuan eggplant and salt and pepper chicken.

Rating purely on the duck, this is the best peking duck set I've had in Melbourne for $55. Simon's Peking duck in Burwoos just doesn't compare. Everything good they say about the duck is true. The one complain I have is that they don't renew the tea leaves (or bags) in the teapot, and being the tea whore that I am, I will easily consume 3 pots of tea in a single sitting. How do I do that? I do a tactical vom after the second pot. Anyway, when I get to my 4th pot, my tea is basically hot water. Please, please, dear owner, consider refreshing the leaves in your teapots after 2 brews.
Edit: I just went on a Tuesday night recently and the place was quiet, which was great. Fast service, extra attentive waiters and automatic teapot refill. Great time to go!

The Peking Duck is usually good (provided the pancakes haven't been made too far ahead on busy nights). Wish I'd tried the duck. I'm leery of trying hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurants because my X-wife convinced me that as a rule, the standards of cleanliness at them are, shall we say, not so good. Other sources I've seen back this up. (Indian restaurants, OTOH, are supposed to be great with their concern for sanitation.) Old Kingdom looks clean and modern inside its architecturally unusual building (whose style reminded me of Mexican restaurants in the U.S.) so I gave it a try.

It's a popular place, full of families, Chinese as well as Anglo. I was tempted by the whole Peking duck platters I saw being waddled out and carved on tables. But at $55, and me dining alone, that was too much for a singleton dinner. I chose lemongrass chicken instead. It was OK, lots of chicken chunks sauteed with onions in a mildly curry-ish sauce that had more MSG than I would have liked, but not so much as to make me sick. There wasn't much lemongrass flavour to the preparation, except for the few pieces of the weed that had been thrown into the dish. Service was off-handed, but the place was busy, busy, busy, without enough people working the floor. I still rate this above any of the Chinese places I've eaten at recently in Box Hill.

Still good. We've been away from this place for a while now but recently returned and it is as good as we remembered it to be. The duck is succulent, the pancake soft and fluffy and the service adequate. Some think because the duck is served ready cut there may be some doubt about integrity, but other than the first visit, our duck is almost always served ready cut and we never felt at risk of being cheated. Sometimes when we took guests we still ask for a performance but its absence never bothered us.

Only gripe remaining is: why still a cash only business? But it is a small gripe...
The food is good (the soft shelled crab in egg yoke crust is gorgeous) and while I'd prefer no butcher paper on top of the table cloth, it is something I'm more than happy to overlook for an always wonderful experience here.

Ducking Good. This has got to be the best peking duck in Melbourne, trust me I have had my fair share of Chinese food having grown up as an Australian born Chinese. The skin is crispy, the duck has a nice balance of meat , skin and fat and full marks to the thin pack cake skin. The service is friendly and welcoming especially to return customers. I would also recommend the san choi bao, quail, the fried to fu and sweet and sour fish.

In response to Glutton 77's negative review, please be aware that traditional peking duck in China is done with almost no meat on the skin, so I would say you probably had a pretty authentic experience.

We had the duck with pancakes, duck with noodles and beanshoots, and duck soup - two ducks at $63 each ($55 + $8 extra for the noodles) and it fed 6 adults.

Peking duck is the main attraction here and the duck and pancakes were done well. However, they are a little stingy with the size of the cucumber and spring onion pieces. Peking Duck love~. Old Kingdom is easily spotted at the corner of Canterbury and the end of Warrigal Rd. I was there for a birthday dinner. 11 of us were seated in a long table instead of a round table which I prefer. The interior is very new; freshly painted walls, new furnitures, bright lights etc. Service was not too bad. This man whom I believe is the owner was seen walking everywhere making sure everything is fine. At first glance, he might seem unfriendly but watch out for his cheekiness. He jokes a lot without smiling. In terms of food; I reckon the peking duck is quite good! We ordered 3 ducks, the last that came was the best as it was cooked, or roasted for a longer period I'm guessing from the skin color it looks darker than the earlier 2 ducks. I always prefer something cooked slightly burnt. Other dishes we order we're Gong Chicken, highly recommended, though serving is small. We also ordered a tofu and a vegetable dish, all were not bad. The only negative comment I have for this place is there were too many people and the tables are set too close to each other hence creating a noisy environment which makes it hard to me to even hear the person in front of me talking. Also, the pancake, is a little too thin, and something has to be done to make them not sticking to each other. It was really hard to separate them apart. A few of us had to eat two pancakes at once because it was too difficult to bring them apart.

It's just as good, simple and precise. Thin crepes and crispy skin make for an indulgent meal. The duck/sprout stir fry is tasty and the follow up soup clean and refreshing. The dining area is more expansive than it's Collingwood sister with a central open bar. This restaurant is definitely a popular stop for those in the know. Great value and highly recommended.

683 Canterbury Road Surrey Hills 3127 Leveraging off the success of the hugely popular (and somewhat dilapidated) Smith Street restaurant, Old Kingdom has recently branched out into suburban Surrey Hills. I was pleasantly surprised at the modern feel of the place, as well as how clean and fresh everything looked. They've even designed the counter to act as a quasi mini bar area. The room is pretty big and tables aren't overly 'sardined' together. It's definitely a vast improvement to Old Kingdom's grandfather in Collingwood. Carving the Duck Much has been said about the service standard, or lack thereof, at Old Kingdom. I'm not sure if I was just lucky or if people simply expect too much from a restaurant like this, but my experience wasn't all bad. The staff go about their duties matter of factly and will seldom crack a smile, but they get the job done and will happily top up your sauce or bring you an extra plate of garnish when asked. Old Kingdom is a no frills but bang for your buck duck. The Peking Duck meal is what most patrons come for. But forward planning is required as the ducks need to be ordered at the time of booking and booking is essential as the place is packed like a cattle car and the feeding of the cattle (ie you) is within a 2 hour time slot before you are replaced by the next round of cattle.  The ducks themselves are executed very well. Crispy thin skin with a subtle spice seasoning. Allow for 1 duck for 2 people. It may sound a tad greedy but the ducks are on the smaller side.
