As an Indonesian, I sometimes crave for authentic Pempek (Fish Cake with spicy sauce). Famili Ria’s Pempek is super authentic because it is very similar to the Pempek sold in Indonesia. I’ve tried the other food there such as the noodles or the fried rice. But it does not taste that good. So every time I visit Famili Ria, I only come for the Pempek.

Tried their Pempek Keriting and Mie Ayam w minced chicken. I love both of them especially the Cuko broth " sweet and sour vinaigrette sauce. Can't believed it!!!! However, the place is not tidy at that time and the location is quite far from where I lived. Overall will come back one day for the same order.

Being students in Melbourne makes us miss our local food. Famili Ria fish cake fulfills our heart after a year not having Indonesian fish cake.

There is nothing bad about their services. The front desk staff welcomed us well. Moreover, we did not wait for a long time to get our dishes. There is $0.50 charge for card payment.

We tried their famous ‘pempek’ or Indonesian fish cake (“Pempek Sampler”, P07) and the ‘mie ayam cabe hijau’(B08).

The ‘pempek’ taste really good, the sauce, especially, is sooooooo legittt. There is something special in the sauce since it tasted almost exactly the same as our Indonesian ‘Pempek’ (of course we have different style of pempek sauce, but this one is soooo grreaattttt).

Unfortunately, the ‘mie ayam cabe hijau’ is good enough but nothing special. They fried the chicken and mixed it with ‘sambal hijau’ / ‘green chilli’. The chicken and green chilli tasted pretty decent and spicy. However, the noodle is just on average, we need to add more salt and pepper.

Overall, this restaurant really worth our effort (it takes 1 hour from our place to be there by public transport). Two thumbs up for the Pempek.

Having never tried traditional Indonesian handmade fishcakes before, we sussed out this venue at Surrey Hills that prides itself on that amongst other things.

Upon browsing the menu, naturally we went straight to their list of fishcakes (ie pempek) of various descriptions, to which our lovely waitress recommended the Pempek Sampler consisting of 5 assortments.

Arriving at the table in all its different shapes and sizes, the medley of fishcakes were served with a well-balanced sweet and sour dipping sauce. Unlike the light and bouncy fishcakes we are more accustomed to, these were dense and chewy. It took a while for us to get used to the texture, and the Pempek Bulat (fried fishball equivalent) ended up being my favourite out of the lot.

The noodle-lover me got the Spicy Bakmie Ayam Cincang & Bakso, oddly costing $1 more than its non-spicy clone. There was nothing to fault about the flavours of the chicken mince and the beef balls were texturally consistent throughout, but the noodles were a tad too heavy on seasoning, thereby eclipsing the former two components. A little more subdued and it would’ve been perfect.

We also shared a portion of Sate Ayam which were tantalisingly juicy and smoky, and my rice-lover partner thoroughly enjoyed his Nasi Kari Ala Medan. Light and runny but packed full of flavour, his chicken curry had the resounding consistency of a laksa, which wasn’t surprising given that there is a noodle option of it on the menu. The rice acted like a sponge, soaking up all the beautiful flavours of the curry and imparting it onto the palate with every mouthful.

Over the years, our penchant for Indonesian cuisine has taken us to many places, and this was definitely one of the better venues we’ve been to.

The portion sizes weren’t big, but we couldn’t finish our meals that day and had to pack some up because “someone” bought a pie next door to munch on whilst waiting for this place to open. Now what did I say about snacking before lunch again?

Authentic taste of indonesia food especially south sumatra food. I tasted PEMPEK (fish cake), mushrooms noodle, and fried meatballs. Fried meatballs is nice, the noodle too aldente for me, but taste okay. So the one which impressed me a lot is the fish cake. Since it’s a bit hard to find a good pempek in melbourne cAused it’s hard to get the fish itself. *ps:sorry for the picture since I always forgot to took it at the beginning 😂😂

We absolutely love Indonesian cuisine however haven’t come across many local places that have stood out for us. However we recently came across Famili Ria in Surrey Hills which had really high ratings so decided to check it out one night. Upon reading the reviews, the fish cakes were apparently exceptional here and the food really authentic. Now we can’t say we’ve ever had Indonesian fish cakes before and certainly can’t judge on the authenticity. However we know what good food tastes like!

This is by far the best Pempek I had in Melbourne. It reminds me of home straight away. When you eat the first bite of the crunchy deep-fried Pempek just to find out the texture inside is incredible and chewy (in a good-Pempek-way). Then you mix it all up with the sauce and fresh cucumber *drollllll*. We ended up ordering some more and we brought home some of it too. Sooo, so good. Thank you for cooking such beautiful and delicious meals!

Famili Ria is a highly rated Indonesian eatery in Surrey Hills. They serve traditional Indonesian dishes such as Bakmie Ayam, Curry Chicken, Grilled Chicken and Nasi Goreng. The Bakmie Ayam is basically dry egg noodles, with your choice of add ons like chicken, beef balls, wonton, tofu and mushrooms. We ordered the one with chicken and beef balls and it comes with a chicken soup as well. Overall, it was a light and tasty dish.

Not just Indonesian Fish Cakes - "Mpek-Mpek" ..... good honest traditional and authentic Indonesian street food.
I'm so glad that the other restaurant we were going to was closed on a Tuesday night, so we've found this Famili Ria nearby, specialising in Indonesian Fish Cakes. Casual, simple "not-much" set up, fold-up plastic chairs, semi-self service for your water, crockery, extra sauces, etc.
We've ordered a couple from their extensive Menu; Combination Fish Cakes - good array of fish cakes, nicely fried, especially that spicy sweet (palm sugar) & sour vinegar sauce, and Chicken & Wonton Noodles - cooked and garnished well, plus take away Rice & Satay combo, probably the only downside.
Small in portion, just like back home, very well made, tasty, quick and definitely a good value for money.
A good quick exploration, we must come back and explore more.
Please note - Indonesian Fish Cakes is called Mpek-Mpek back home, made from Tenggiri (Wahoo) fish & Tapioca, differ from its Thai compatriot and it's not an entree but the main course. Famous culinary from Palembang City the capital city of South Sumatera - the big island on the left of Singapore city just in case you are wondering where it is and no direct flight from Melbourne, so Surrey Hills is closer and more direct from anywhere in Melbourne. Main reason dinning here for the Indonesian fish cake, and saw on the board hot&spicy noodle.

For the noodle : I like the texture, thick enough, and a bit curly. The hot and spicy taste really well combine with the noodle texture

For the fish cake : really hard to find a good fish cake (Indonesian style) in Melbourne - I will recommend this one will be the closest taste in back home town

I usually had Fish Cake Ball or Fish Cake with Whole Egg. They also have Fam Ria Fried Rice - it was very good and very tasty. This place has a menu which is reasonable and delicious. Famili Ria is a lovely Indonesian restaurant, especially for those missing pempek!! An Indonesian dish best described as a savoury fish cake in various shapes, fried to delicious goodness.

The service here is lovely.
Honestly, probably a bit expensive but considering they are the only restaurant I know serving this in Melbourne it's something I can deal with.

The pempek itself is really good. My favourites currently are the pempek bulat (ball) and pempek keriting (curly).

Opinions from many reviewers (including trusted sources) put the Pempek (fishcake) at Famili Ria as unrivaled and very authentic. That's good enough for me because I wouldn't have a clue, seeing as it is very much an Indonesian delicacy. Authentic it may be, but I just don't think it was my kinda thing. I now know that it is made from tapioca as well as minced fish, so the consistency and texture is quite different to what I am used to enjoying ie. more Chinese and Thai style stuff. But that's just my opinion, and it is definitely worth a try for those not familiar with it. I actually tried most of the different kinds that they have there in the pempek sampler, and the one that I found was by far the most enjoyable was the pempek telor kecil. It was tasty and the egg must've broken up the texture for me. The bakmie ayam jamur, a noodle dish, didn't taste particularly special to me, but I suppose it seemed quite a homey meal when looked at from a different angle, so I can see the potential draw, particularly from Indonesian patrons. The ayam bakar pedas was really good though, genuinely enjoyable for me. Succulent chicken, beautiful marinade with great charcoal flavour. Be careful of this one though as it packs more heat than it looks, and the accompanying sauce packs a whole lot extra.
I'm not one who cares much about decor and such, as long as the food is good. But if you do mind, the decor here may feel a little sterile, although the space is kept quite clean. I did notice at least a few of the drinking cups were dirty though. Price-wise, if you appreciate the authenticity it would feel worth the price, but otherwise it might seem a bit overpriced for the amount you get. They have a fairly big menu so I believe I will be back, despite having tried the most famous dishes.

I stopped off here after taking the woofles for a walk. I'm not sure if I have been properly introduced to pempek, the toothsome tapioca fish cakes that are the speciality here. I had a shrimp soup with mini fish cakes, boldly flavoured and a touch over-seasoned, but it felt a genuine Indonesian experience. It's a swift & cheap feed kinda joint with matching decor (though appears well clean enough). I'll be returning for the sample plate of various pempek sometime soon.

Assorted Pempek. I love it when a food item makes me smarter. So it was with the pempek at Famili RIA. Not because they increased my brain power or anything like that. But after eating these fishcake dumplings, I went online to find out "What the heck is a pempek?" I hadn't seen them on the menus of other Indonesian restos I've been to. I'm an ignorant Anglo, so I figured I had just overlooked the name.

Turns out they're a somewhat uncommon dish of dumplings made of fish paste and tapioca. Pempek are a specialty from the city of Palembang, the fifth-largest burg in Indonesia. If you're Indonesian reading this, you probably already know that, so sorry for being repetitious. For Westerners like me, pempek are a novelty. I also learned about the 1942 naval battle between the Dutch, Brits and Aussies vs. the Japanese at Palembang, plus the various types of fish paste used for the dumplings, along with all sorts of other Indonesian facts. All because of a plate of pempek.

The young waitress at Famili RIA was kind enough to serve me a bowl with a mixed lot of the dumplings. It was good value for money, three large-ish dumplings, cut in half to reveal their fillings, and a stack of curly noodles for $7.50. My favourite was the keriting, a curly dumpling that looks like a human brain on the outside. The ones Famili RIA put out were deep-fried with a nice crunch to the dough shell. The pempek dough doesn't taste at all fishy, although Wikipedia tells me there's a type made with fish skin that has more pong. The tahu version, stuffed with tofu, and the one with egg inside, were mellow-flavoured. Famili RIA accompanies their pempek with kuah cuko, a thin vinegar/palm sugar/garlic/chili sauce that food guides tell me is traditional with this dish. The mix of flavours gives it a wonderfully Indonesian zing, and it's spicy enough that I probably didn't need to add any sambal like I did. The waitress said that they have several heat levels to their kuah cuko, so if you're a real Indonesian you can get it hotted up like at home.

It is expected from a small take away place like this. They are not a fine dining restaurant. I found the customer service are very good compare to many other Chinese places. They can be very busy, so it is just a courtesy to wait for table or sometimes share the tables and order at register as the sign said. simple!!

Will defintely comeback!. Enjoyed very much the meal last night from Famili RIa. Saw a couple of raving reviews from my fellow indo friends on Facebook and decided to give it a try because the photos looked awesome. Showed them to the housie and she's sold.

So off we went last night driving all the way to Box Hill from the northern suburbs! And it was well worth it!

Haven't got to try the whole pempek selection but managed to take away the Lenggang - which was very delish! We both had the Noodles which was awesome - that, I'd say the closest so far to Indonesian noodles compared to others available in Melbourne - taste-wise and content-wise. Not to forget the Baso Goreng!! and they weren't pricey at all. If only it's closer to the city, I'd be a regular. But will come back for sure :) Please do keep up the good work! - and no, I don't know the owner, this is simply a satisfied customer :)

The place was very easy to find. For people who are not familiar with Indonesian dish the photos of dishes are quite helpful. We went there at dinner time, the food was quickly served, we ordered fishcake omelette, mixed beef ball soup needle, octopus balls and vegetables. For us, the food was a bit too sweet when savoury taste was expected. Other then that, the restaurant is clean and quiet, recommend for those who would like to try something different from Chinese food in Box Hill.

The Indonesian fishcakes (pempek) are a must try here. They're known to be good at that, and they are. This is our go-to restaurant for Indonesian fishcakes. The noodles are good too, though occasionally it's slightly soft, but the taste is pretty consistent. If you like spicy stuffs, the fried chicken with rice (ayam geprek style) is good too. It's not the cheapest restaurant though, but for its authenticity and consistency in taste, i say it's worth it.

Nice Indonesian eatery with a decent selection of food. The fish cake is amiss try. The texture is smooth yet filling and goes very well with the sauce. The chicken noodle is very spicy and appetizing while the grilled chicken is tender and nicely marinated. Only gripe I have is the interior of the place is very sterile and doesn’t add to any of the mood for a nice meal.
