Dined with 2 of my girlfriends tonight and the food was delicious! Especially loved the tempura eggplant starter and the beef cheek curry. Excellent roti too. Good size portions, excellent service (they gave us extra space for my pram and were very accommodating of my baby) and very good value. I’ll definitely be back.

If you have not dined out at the Mekong you have not experienced one of Sydney’s finest dining treats! The service is five star and the food is deliciousI I had the Share Entee followed by the Soft Shell Crab Masala. What a treat! See you again and again soon!

The food and service here were amazing! We went on a Thursday for lunch (I think this is the only day that they're open for lunch), and we had the 2 course chefs special which has a complementary 3rd course included for $28. The squid ink dumplings for entree were delicious and I had the beef curry served with rice. My sister had the seafood style curry and both were amazing. Service was great as was the wine that came by the glass and bottle. Highly recommended! :)

First dinner after ease restrictions
Mekong share plate.
grilled scallop using fresh coconut, bacon oil and yuzu chilli oil. Spiced chicken satay: using house made chilli with peanut sauce. Grilled tumeric catfish: well combine between betel leaf and onion, lime zest and roasted peanuts. Seafood crepes: mungbean, coconut and chilli anchovy sauce and well combine with miso sauce with chilli for dipping.

Burmese King Prawns.
Caremelized onion with tamarind, balsamic with watercress salad with crumbed prawns.

Crab meat fried rice.
crab meat with chilli, onion cute widely so texture is nice, mushroom and shreded eggs so well combined and taste has sweet and sour.

Chargrilled cambodian pork ribs.
traditional strong slaw and the pork ribs meat inside is not well combined ingredient so it gets strong smell of pork meat.. the ribs is soft and is not enough grilled.

Best chicken satay entree I’ve ever tasted in my life!! Sauce was amazing and meat was moist. Wow!

Steamed whole fish has delicious citrus sauce and fish was fresh.

Was disappointed in duck pancake entree cuz duck pieces were tiny and dry. The veggies that came with it was fresh and tasty. Loved the addition of pineapple. Since duck was too small, I would not order again.

Large prawn main (3 prawn pieces) tasted great and was fresh. Only down side was for some reason, i thought it was going to b grilled, but it was actually deep fried tempura.....not sure if I forgot to read description or if it wasn’t specified in menu? But it did taste great with great sauce! So if u r ok with fried then it’s a go.

Food is high quality and delicious. Service as good.

Very beautiful food. Not sure if 100% authentic but the chef is really talented. We like especially the soft shell crab masala which had just the right amount of chilli hit, the clams poached in beer (the bacon adds a nice salty aftertaste) and the amok curry. Highly recommended

Arrived at 6pm on a Wednesday evening to a fairly empty restaurant, and no front of house staff. After a few minutes someone emerged and we were led to a table by the window. Service was excellent for the rest of the meal.

Food was reasonably priced and excellent quality- arrived promptly. Not too spicy and full of Asian flavours. We ordered the share platter for entree (you get a bit of everything!), soft shell crab and duck curries for mains, and the lychee mousse and soy milk panna cotta for dessert. Seafood was cooked very well. Would recommend the scallops, seafood crepes (filled with coconut and prawns...not much seafood variety though), soft shell crab masala and confit duck curry. One serving of rice was enough for the two of us. Their tamarind sauce (came with the crepes) was also great!

Dessert were also good - not super outstanding but very interesting, with lovely flavours. Overall an excellent meal - would come back again!

Nice fusion food joint. The barrumundi was really good, it was served with a tad sour lime sauce which goes so well with the tender fish fillets. And that duck curry, absolutely love it! We also tried the crepe which was not our favourite.

I went to Mekong not long after it opened. I thought it was very impressive indeed. Then friends booked for a staff Christmas party and weren’t as impressed, so it’s taken me a while to get back. A friend, who’s moved overseas to Spain, hasn’t seen this new street of restaurants and I thought it would be fun to show him, and I thought Mekong would be a good choice, and offer food that he wouldn’t be able to easily find in Madrid.

When I saw how fancy the food looked, I was a bit worried that it would be more catered to the western palette. But my family loved it! My mum really enjoyed the eggplant and pork floss tempura, and we found many of the dishes delightfully spicy. The ingredients were fresh, and while the price is steeper than what we're used to, it's a good treat for special occasions, and we had a pretty filling meal.
We'd love to come back and try the other items!

You get the best of both worlds. With a stroll through spice alley, you get to embrace the atmosphere. But with Mekong, you get a quiet high-quality dining experience right in the middle of spice alley. Loved the food, drinks and friendly staff. Would highly recommend this place.

If I’m judging food alone it’s a 11/10 but I thought the vibe was fairly poor, for a busy Thursday night at 8pm and all the restaurants around heaving this one is on the third floor and was half empty. I don’t know why cause the food and flavours were soooo good. Pork ribs were the highlight... big, falling off the bone and a stack of meat made them to die for. Beef cheek curry was superb as was the entrees we had... they were described as gyozas but were clearly like fried wontons but who cares, they tasted amazing. could be the best roti I’ve had in my life... flakey crispy and fresh. Service speed was good but not all that cluey. 4.5/5

We came here expecting solely Vietnamese cuisine, but Mekong is much more than that, offering a variety of modern Pan-Asian dishes on their extensive menu.

We tried two entrees (Cambodian Beef Skewers and Por Pieer Thai Spring Roll) and the spring roll won out on both presentation and flavour. The beef skewers were dry and chewy due to their small size, but the peanut sauce was tasty. The spring roll came cut into four pieces, and despite being vegetarian, was a triumph in textures and flavours with a rich and tangy orange tamarind sauce.

The two mains (Soft Shell Crab Masala and Chargrilled Cambodian Pork Ribs) had much better consistency and were comparable to each other. The soft shell crab was nice and crispy with the garam masala sauce perfectly rich, fiery, and tangy, while the sizeable pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and came in a super sticky and sweet glaze, tempered a little by the side of Asian slaw.

Lastly, we shared a dessert (Soy Panna Cotta) which was a clever take on the underrated Chinese dessert of tofu pudding, with the panna cotta replacing the silky tofu. The panna cotta was firm with a slight jiggle, and its subtle soy flavour paired nicely with the sharpness of the ginger syrup.

Apart from the dessert, the four savoury dishes were over-balanced on the sweeter side and catering for the Western palate, but if you don't mind that, Mekong is an Asian restaurant worthy of your attention.

Mekong sure did deliver! Food was packed full of flavour and chilli (but it was soo good that you overcome the heat because it's that delicious you can't stop). Serving Indochinese cuisine in the busy & competitive Kensington Street. Doesn't standout from the outside being on the second floor on top of the Viet restaurant, but their food definitely did. We got there at 6:30 to an almost empty restaurant, but it soon fill up. The beauty of Indochinese cuisine is that if you like Thai & Vietnamese, but can't decide which one to have for dinner, you can do both here. We got the mix entree (kudos for making extra serving so everyone on the table get one of each), confit red duck curry, Cambodian chargrilled pork ribs & cabbage with king brown mushrooms in truffle oil. Loved all of the food, particularly the mains, the red curry was really moorish. Minor let down was the attention to detail on their service, the duck & pork ribs needed breaking down & cutting to share, but no knife or even extra fork to do it with, the cocktails were ok, nothing special for the price, and the short dessert menu didn't appeal at all. Overall a pretty enjoyable meal.

Have I been living under a rock or something?...As I only first heard about Kensington Street at the beginning of this week, and after further investigation I cleared all of our previous weekend dining plans to check out this new entertainment district in the city!

Located just before the Central Park shopping centre opposite UTS (when walking down George St away from the city) is a pedestrianised walkway filled with restaurants and shops, firstly with the reconfigured ‘Old Rum Store’, followed by ‘Spice Alley’ a curving narrow street with eatery and alfresco dining on both sides  (picture an outdoor food court), before looping back around to Kensington St East and West sides. We completed the loop, poking our heads into a few stores before deciding on Mekong, located on the upper floor (East side) above Viet.

Welcomed by the sounds of the chefs grinding up spices in a stone mortar and pestle, and the melody of a top 50 pop-music track, I think the first impression perfectly captured the East-West fusion vibe Mekong is aiming for.

Studying the menu, you know it’s going to be a unique experience when nothing on it was stock-standard or typical (so we didn’t really know what to expect), and seeing the prices next to the dishes it was also going to be a bit on the pricier side, for example an average entree was the same price as a main down in Spice Alley.  We ended up ordering the Mekong entree sharing plate (which was made up of half of the entrees on the menu). And we ended up only choosing one main to go with our $30 entree plate.

When we placed our order the friendly waiter was prepared to offer his assistance, as perhaps the menu could have been a little more descriptive than just listing out the ingredients of the dish. But he seemed pleased with our choices, and we waited with anticipation as we took in the interior and table setting; the  cutlery was modern and up-market and the proper linen napkin easily scored a 5-out-of-5 stars on the napkin test. The walls were painted in a textured green finish, and the other fixtures of bamboo pillars, large green leafy pot plants, and dark wooden floors collectively gave off a jungle vibe. The simple wooden chairs reminded me of the original Mekong restaurant from the 80’s which used to be located in Bondi Junction (but I’m sure there is no linkage between the old and the current name-sake restaurants).

When the food arrived, the fragrance of the food wafted up to meet us. Yum! The shared plate had:
-Pork belly wrapped in Betel leaf- picture a tiny dark-green spring-roll filled with mince pork (hard to tell if it was really pork belly).
-Soft shell crab taco- a canapé sized mouthful of shredded fresh coconut, inside of a paper thin fold of crispy shell (hard to taste the crab though).
-Steamed scallop served on its shell with various greens/herbs/spices, a spicy tangy sauce, and slithers of young coconut (although the toppings overshadowed the smallish piece of scallop)
-And last of the entree quartet was the crispy seafood crape which was pan-fried to a smoky crisp on one side, while still a little bit chewy (a good chewy) on the other. The crepe was the most substantial of the four, with 2 prawns each and a nice spicy sauce to drizzle on top.

All in all, all of the tastes and flavours were added with thought to maximise the affect in your mouth and I think Mekong should be categorised as a ‘Fine dining’ restaurant, not what it is currently classified as (Casual dining), as with the attention to detail and the price, there is nothing casual about this place.

And being a fine establishment like it is, the waiter waited until he collected our entrée plates before indicating to the kitchen to start preparing our single main dish. By this time we were already evaluating the meal thus far, and we had agreed on 4.5, the main could lift the meal to a 5, if it surpassed the high bar from the entrée.

Our main was smoked duck which was served in a sweet-tangy broth. And it was a little bit disappointing, as the totality of duck we received for a main size portion was only one duck leg, to be shared between two. I’m not sure how you’d manage it if you had a few more people to dinner, I guess you’d need to order two plates (at $28 each), or literally have a bite each?

Any smoky flavour from the cooking process was unfortunately lost on the duck and the crispy skin was soggy due to being served in broth. Don’t get me wrong, the broth was tasty as it had a complex taste signature which was sweet and tart from the cinnamon stick and the cumquat, but the interesting flavours also masked the star of the dish. Duck me! What a shame!

And after I was chasing around every last grain of rice on my plate, as I was still hungry after $65 for two (including a side of rice, and tips), I guess I left a little dissatisfied. Definitely the food was great! But I wished there was more of it, considering you’re paying top dollar. But yeah, the main did help them to maintain their 4.5, but we won’t be back any time soon, as I think we already tried the most interesting dishes on their menu, and there are so many more restaurants to try at Kensington Street, than to justify coming back to the same place twice.

A nice combo of flavours from SE cuisines! Very nice balance of spices and deep flavours in the Amok curry (high quality ingredients too - tiger prawns, clams, barramundi & fresh scallops) & nice sweet & spicy flavour in the soft shell crab masala. The pho noodle is legend! The spring roll is absolutely beautiful, it is just the portion that doesnt make sense, yes it is too less. $6 for 3 little spring rolls (cutted in half). The chicken hainan rice is average, i like the sauce though, but not for the soup. I feel like the soup is kind of having a sweet weird taste which doesnt go along with the chicken rice. Ambience is pretty good. Customer service is just okay, i am just pretty annoyed with one waitress who has forgotton to get me some chop chilies. I will definitely come back again, but only for the pho noodle.! Cao!

Bistro Mekong recently launched at Quadrangle Shopping Village in Castlecrag. Bistro Mekong promises to showcase the best of Indochine cuisine but with a twist. Their menu is designed for sharing and is the perfect local spot for a casual dinner with friends or family. Not for us though as we're located the complete opposite direction! Their flavours are inspired by countries along the Mekong River. If you are in Castlecrag and are craving some tasty Indo-chinese food, Bistro Mekong is open Tuesday - Sunday.

The Mekong River travels more than 4,000 kilometres through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.  It has become an important trade route that connects the six countries to each other and the rest of the world. Broadly speaking the river is divided between upper and lower Mekong with conditions varying along its length.

Amazing food - we had the appetiser platter to share and I chose the soft shell crab masala as the main. The platter was a delight - a myriad of textures and flavours made from South East Asian flavours with a twist such as lemongrass scallop, betel leaf and seafood crepes with a wonderful sweet sticky dipping sauce. The crab was wonderfully crunch and the masala was rich and flavoursome without being overwhelming. I mopped every last bit of it up with the crunchy mantao buns provided! A truly memorable meal and very wallet friendly too! Hugely recommended if you’re looking for authentic Asian in a relaxed, hip setting.

Second visit I had the Amok curry and Cambodian ribs. If there’s one dish you need to come back here for, it’s the curry. Steeped in fragrant fish broth, spices and onions/garlic and heaped all over a generous helping of scallops, shellfish and two jumbo prawns, this is a dish fit for the kings.

Mekong is a little hard to find thanks to an unassuming shopfront and its location above ground level. Look for The Viet restaurant on the ground floor and head up the stairs next door to Mekong.
We were a large group so managed to try several dishes. The highlights were the seafood amok curry, BBQ pork ribs (so good!) and grilled cabbage with truffle dressing. The betel leaf bites were tasty morsels. Unfortunately, the turmeric chicken was less impressive tasting like a weak butter chicken. But overall, there were more hits than misses. I'd return to try the other items.

I’ve been to Mekong on several occasions and they’re food is always consistently delicious. I particularly love the stir fried crispy pork belly with sambal and the truffle cabbage salad. They’re curries are always rich and flavourful too, usually accompanied by some really good roti or dosa. I really love the dessert here too! They usually include some really interesting flavour combinations, such as taro cheesecake.

We got the pork ribs, sirloin curry, roti, papaya salad and black risotto dessert. The sauce on the pork ribs was really delicious! Sirloin curry was very tasty although quite spicy and there was a LOT of oil in it - we had to scoop the oil out of the bowl as it was too much but it went really well with the rice. Could probably have given dessert a miss - was nothing too special. Would come back and try other items on the menu as I really enjoyed this meal!

After being injured and forced to be house bound, it was great to get out on date night with MW at the lovely Mekong Restaurant.  I've read and seen a lot of great photos from Mekong so I had good vibes coming into this restaurant. Mekong Restaurant is located on Kensington St in Chippendale and the entry is via some stairs so it's up on level 2. The restaurant is modern and has a tropical vibe with deep greens and blues. I get some recommendations from the staff on the menu.

A great little find but you'll need to be able to stand spice and chilli. We ordered two mains to share, one being the pork belly dish (which on the menu did not have a chilli symbol) and also the amok curry.

The amok curry was delicious, spicy but also has a really nice sweetness. The seafood on the dish was cooked really well and tender. We really enjoyed this dish but I personally felt the one chilli symbol on the menu was inaccurate as it was quite spicy.

We also ordered the pork belly as it does not have a spicy symbol and my boyfriend cannot handle chilli. The problem was ... It was really spicy! Unfortunately it was quite unpleasant for him. For me, again more spicy than the impression given from menu. Edit: it appears Mekong has revised their menu and the chilli ratings since our last visit and thus dish now has two chilli symbols next to it.

We wanted to try dessert but we were really full from drinking lots of water to try and tame the fire burning in our mouths. The flavors were overall delicious, and I enjoyed the intimate atmosphere, but to those who are not used to eating very spicy foods, you've been warned.

This restaurant was part of a flash offer through Dimmi where a booking allowed for 50% off total bill.

Great restaurant tucked away nicely behind spice alley. Would describe it as high end & modern south East Asian cuisine. The dishes were well presented and delicious. The entrees were smaller than I had anticipated! But interesting and tasty nonetheless. Service was very attentive and friendly. If you're looking for a great mixture of south East Asian dishes, then Mekong is the place to go. Only downside is that I think it is a bit pricey for what you pay for.. especially when you can just go to a Thai or viet place and get some of these dishes/flavours for half the price. So weigh in whether it's worth it.

In a last bid to utilise my entertainment book vouchers before the end of the May, I organised a dinner with DrL and AW at Mekong. Not to be confused with Lower Mekong located on street level, which serves up Vietnamese food, Mekong is its more mature, upper-class sister restaurant that offers South-East Asian cuisine in a fine dining setting.

Having only walked by in the past, it was an interesting experience walking up the stairway, past bamboo walls to the 2nd floor. Dim mood lighting, dark wood and shiny metallic surfaces reigned supreme in this restaurant, which overlooks the humble Spice Alley and Kensington Street below...

This is a very nice Indochinese restaurant located on Kensington Street (need to take stairs or a lift to reach this place). I recommend ordering a few dishes to share such as the confit red duck curry which is a little spicy but the sauce is so good with rice and the duck very well cooked. The seafood amok curry is a good less-spicy option also packed with flavour and a whole range of seafood.

I visited on a Friday night so it was quite busy and the restaurant can get a bit noisy but I can still see myself coming back later for the food.

So glad I suggested this place for dinner - it was great! We ordered the vegan tasting plate, grilled eggplant, cambodian crispy rice vermicelli, grilled cabbage with truffle oil, and everything was delightful.

The tasting plate came out looking super pretty and three of them were really good~ One was a little strange but I can't remember what it was. 😓 Still, definitely worth ordering because it'll get you in the mood for what's to come.

The vermicelli noodles and eggplant were tasty but also not mindblowing, but the cabbage was oozing with truffle oil and was very popular indeed. I don't think many people dislike truffle anything, so this was a perfect addition to our meal.

Mekong has a really upmarket vibe about it. You see this from the moment you walk in. The décor is just stunning.

The food here is absolutely delicious. We had the Chefs Shareplate to begin with, along with the Squid Ink Dumplings. Rookie mistake, we soon realised we over ordered on starters, as the Shareplate alone is quite filling!

The absolute standout dish was the Amok Curry. It was absolutely divine. It was such a unique flavoured curry which was full bodied in flavour but didn’t overpower the delicate seafood within the dish! You certainly can’t go past this dish!

We also enjoyed the truffle cabbage. It was something different to have as a side.

The desserts here are also delicious!

Excellent Southeast Asian fusion food, in a low-lit, little-bit-fancy modern setting. The food starts to encroach into fine-dining quality but retains large portions and fair prices. Kensington street in Chippendale is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets with a plethora of excellent dining options. Mekong is one level above the street (upstairs from Viet) and has a relaxing and welcoming vibe.

The menu is designed to take you on a trip down the Mekong with Asian fusion dishes that are perfect for sharing. For starters we had the squid ink dumplings and the seared scallops. The dumplings were filled with prawn and crab and when served they are covered in a chicken pho. The scallops were mouth watering and dressed with bacon oil, chili, coconut and shallots. You will most certainly want more than one of these!

For mains we could not go past the confit duck red curry - a flavoursome dish with pineapple and tomato. The seafood amok takes you to Cambodia and the smell is as enticing as the taste with a perfect amount of spice. The wagyu beef salad was a refreshing accompaniment to the curries and highly recommended. Each dish was beautifully presented and we only wish we had room for dessert!

The vibe on the street and in the restaurant makes Mekong a dining experience of stunning Asian eats.

It was an especially busy night and all the tables were full, yet the service was excellent and on point. We had the chefs platter and squid ink dumplings as entrees. The chefs platter was on point and consisted of various tastings of scallops, pork belly, prawns and ink cups. We thought they were all great however our favourite we the scallops.

For mains, we had the steamed barramundi and wagyu beef salad. The barramundi was soft and cooked to perfection! A really nice dish.

As for dessert, as we were quite full, we tried the rose ice-cream with egg floss, taro custard and mung bean. The rose ice-cream was to die for and we would gladly go back for it.

Some of the best Asian food experiences I've ever had!!!! I came here for my birthday, and ordered the fried spring rolls for entre, the house curry with tofu and a salad on the side with extra tofu. (There were some nice vegan options)

The spring rolls were very crunchy, different but beautiful. They had tofu inside which I really loved. The dipping sauce must have had some alcoholic drink mixed with soy, balanced and authentic flavors.

Now the curry was absolutely amazing! Beautiful combination of galangal, coconut and curry leaves with zucchini, eggplants, sweet potatoes and snow peas. The sweet potatoes were a little too chunky for me and maybe a little overpowering, (I actually couldn't finish more than half of the sweet potatoes) but loved the combination.

THE HIGHLIGHT of the restaurant was the tofu!!!! This was the most delicious tofu of my life, I nearly cried when I finished the last bite of my tofu! It was lightly battered and fried, crispy on the outside with smooth and nice flavors inside.

the lady who served me was very attentive and friendly, and the location was -obviously- amazing.
I highly recommend this place! It's a must try if you're around!!!

The curry was soooo good! Not too sweet,

Sitting above Kensington's Spice Alley is Mekong, serving a melting pot of cuisines from all the South-East Asia countries along the Mekong River. Dishes from Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are all represented. The restaurant is split into two parts, a more casual eatery serving predominantly Vietmanese food downstairs and the full service restaurant upstairs. We started with their signature Squid Ink Dumplings. The squid ink dumpling skins were very delicated, encasing a Thai crab meat and prawn filling. It was served with a amazingly fragrant chicken pho broth poured from a teapot. The broth really elevates the flavour of the dumplings and was definitely the highlight of the dish.

Came here during the Stoneleigh promo where you get a free bottle of wine with your meal which was a nice touch. The service was very attentive and food came out at a good pace. We got the tasting platter which is well presented and you get to try a good sample of the entrées. For the main we decided to get the wagyu salad (great flavours but unfortunately too spicy for my liking - word of warning tell the staff to not make it spicy if you can't handle heat like me), side of bok choy & rice. The manager was also very knowledgeable & friendly. I will definitely be back here to try out more dishes.

River Ninja!!

Travelling up the Mekong river with your taste buds, this place rocks in terms of flavours.

Upper Mekong is located next to Spice Alley, this place serves up a fusion of dishes that you would find near the Mekong river but more refined.

As you can see the dishes looks amazing and the flavours are there, the resturant's layout is simple but classic, reminds me of a fine dine but more casual.

Staff and service here was great, attentive and very detailed informing us of the dish and flavours.

Great place and will return ... Maybe to the Lower Mekong 😉 Until next time ... Keep eating!!!!

Located above the restaurant named "Lower Mekong",  Mekong was a very special treat indeed. Living up to its reviews, I tried the lunch menu, happily consuming all the morsels they had to offer. The waitstaff were friendly and delightful and background music filled the large room with a sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance.

I first ordered the starter: "Little Fish" - in essence, it is a bowl of very crunchy and delicious anchovies, garnished with a sweet and spicy sauce, chili, onions and micro-herbs. This is was really good, with a good sized portion. The chili gives the dish a good kick and the sauce is rich, deepened with spice.

Afterwards came two squid-ink dumplings filled with crab meat enveloped in chicken pho broth served through a tea pot. I really liked this dish and wished I could of had more portions with it.

For mains, I had "Seafood Amok" w/ jasmine rice - this dish was both hot and spicy, but not so spicy in that it overwhelmed the palate. With enough portions for 2-3 people, this seafood curry had scallops, fish fillet, pipis and prawns all mixed together in a very rich curry. The cherry tomatoes gave the dish the acidity and sweetness that it needed, really tying the dish together, creating balance.

I saved the best for last - "Rosewater Lychee" - this wonderful dessert featured edible flowers, mango puree, meringue drops, a pistachio crumb and an oh so delicate rosewater lychee cake. This is was the dish of the day. Just amazing. Flawless.

I would definitely, come back again, perhaps for the dinner service.

Upon arrival to Mekong, I was attended by a lovely man named Ryan with such adequate presentation in customer service. Throughout the evening, I was consistently being served even without needing to call for assistance, providing drinks and asking how my dishes were. Usually being disrupted during my dinner is quite irritating, but with every staff's undivided care to my needs made my night more enjoyable and welcoming.
They've taken their Vietnamese cuisine and literally put me right in its homeland. Such exquisite and strong flavours with every dish possible.
Recommend to try the squid-ink dumplings in broth. Outstanding authentic strong flavours in the broth that leaves you speechless.

Nothing beats the setting of Meekong, looking down over a little market alley on one side, then to the other a busy Sydney street! The food is just more incredible as the photos I have seen all over their Facebook page! Could not recommend highly enough!

The newest addition to Kensington Street. Located on the third floor of the building, you are instantly greeted by bamboo features and friendly staff.

We were seated very quickly and while perusing the menu, we were treated to an appetiser of baby carrots covered in chilli jam and pork floss. There was so many delicious sounding dishes on the menu, we just wanted to try everything between the two of us lol. We were given a suggestion of ordering 2-3 entree, 2 mains and some sides. We pretty much ordered as recommended.

For the entrees, we ordered the pork in the betel leaf, squid ink dumplings and the barramundi. They were all delicious, but my favourite was probably the squid ink dumpling and the Barrumundi. We ordered two mains that was both red curry based. The first was the sweet lemon Rumdul and the very popular full moon. I loved the full moon and I can see why it is very popular. It was delicious and very photo worthy. We also got a side of morning glory with our mains. We couldn't leave without dessert and the dishes we had were very filling so we went with the coconut icecream. It was light and refreshing with all the toppings on it. A must have.

Overall, it was a great experience. The flavours of South East Asia comes alive with every bite. I'll definitely be back!

Mekong is a South East Asian restaurant located on the popular Kensington Street which is part of the newly developed Central Park precinct. The restaurant serves up a variety of different Asian inspired dishes ranging from both traditional and progressive items with a menu that is intended to mimic a journey along the Mekong river starting from the mouth of the river and heading into the mainland.

Every dish I experienced at Mekong was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Great fresh ingredients and inventive dishes that still managed to maintain their authentic flavour. Request a seat by the window to allow for optimum viewing of the hustle and bustle of Spice Alley below.

In the heart of Spice Alley and what has become synonymous with quality street food, we have Upper Mekong. A diamond in the rough of the fabulous food mecca that is Kensington Street in Chippendale. Lower Mekong, the ground floor of this three story building, is your typical Vietnamese street food. Venture up the long stair case and you have two levels of Upper Mekong, serving IndoChine cuisine, in a designed to share menu.

There are a few levels to Mekong and we were on the top level. The décor is nicely themed. The ceiling is black industrial with black nets "scalloping" along for the entire length of the roof. There is bamboo - floor to ceiling, at the bar and along the walls of the room. Also adorning the bar is an impressive floral arrangement. Above are lights encased in what was modelled on crab pots. The crab pots have bamboo spiralling around them. This makes for a unique arrangement.

Mekong is described as indochine cuisine and a travelling feast along the river. Head Chef Tiw Rakarin has put together a menu that delights the tastebuds.

We had Little Fish - Thai crisp anchovies with lime, lemongrass, chilli and peanuts. This was AMAZING! The aroma was delish. It was colourful and had such great flavours. The combination of the chilli, the lemongrass, the crunch of the peanuts - this is a "must have" dish. Sir loved this dish - was one of his favourites.

A brilliant meal accompanied by the best service from our host. True and affordable class. The complimentry baby carrots with pork floss had a wonderful crunch and its uniqueness told us that the meal ahead was going to be something special.

The chefs shareplate is a great way to sample. Everything on it is a winner from the scallops to the pancake. Onto the mains and the spices dances around. The signature 'full moon' steamed coconut with prawns is a must with plenty of coconut flesh. The confit duck in the red curry was succulent and the wagyu beef salad provided a good kick (apparently up there on the spiciness level).

But hands down the lovely side dish of grilled cabbage generously drenched in truffle oil won the night. The desserts also raised the bar. The coconut bowl was the resounding favourite.

Flavour, uniqueness and service excels at 'Mekong' and is surely one to go back again.

The influence of dishes at Mekong span across Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It may seem like too much for a single restaurant to handle but Mekong have managed to pull it off. Entree like Little fish – Thai crisp anchovies with lime, lemongrass, chilli and peanuts $5 showcases punchy flavours and is full of crunch from the deep fried anchovies. Squid ink dumpling (2) with crabmeat and prawn thai stuffing in broth $12 paper-thin dumplings swimming in a delicate broth – the crab and prawn filling strike that perfect middle of sweetness and meatiness.

Mekong, Kensington Street's newest addition, has given South East Asian cuisine a new life. With a modern twist on traditional flavours, the upstairs dining lounge presents an open kitchen and complete bar that disassociates itself from the hustle and bustle of its sister store below; Lower Mekong.

On arrival, a complimentary snack of baby carrots coated in chilli jam and pork floss placed us in first gear, and there after, accelerated onwards and upwards. Squid ink dumplings were mouthfuls of soft lubricious sheets encapsulating a morsel of prawn and crab mix. Micro herbs and edible flowers added colour and vibrancy, and was a recurring addition throughout the night. The standout however, was the warm broth. The earthy tones with added sweetness was refreshing yet hearty. Justifiably worthy of the $12 price tag as I would definitely be back just to have this dish again.

In comparison, Coco and chick was slightly underwhelming as the chickpea filling lacked seasoning and was difficult to eat, with no starchy ingredient to hold the pocket together. Accompanying chilli jam was well received with a sweet undertone followed by an unexpected kick.

Mains were eagerly anticipated and admittedly did take some time to arrive. When they did, it was everything we imagined and more! Full moon was a steamed young coconut egg custard with tiger prawns. The flesh of coconut was tender and translucent and had me nodding like a bobble head. Not to be outdone, the Royal seafood amok was similarly spectacular. Each seafood element was perfectly cooked and the viscous sauce had so much flavour I had goosebumps on my tongue (if that's even possible). On completion of mains my mouth was on fire, and it felt amazing!

So good was our night that we decided to try 3 out of their 4 desserts. To hit 3 for 3 (of coconuts) we made a home run with the Bangkok ice cream. The sweet corn, pomegranate and warm sticky rice paired beautifully with the cold coconut ice cream. As an added bonus, we scraped out the flesh of the coconut shell and devoured that too. Pure tropical bliss. Rose water lychee mousse was very light and fragrant with a refreshing mango purée and fine crumble. Although the basil panna cotta lacked the signature wobble, texturally it was not overly gelatinous or firm. To accentuate the flavours of basil, the dessert was not very sweet, however the walnut crumble and drops of meringue really completed the dish.

There was so many drool worthy moments at Mekong that I just can't wait to be back! Service was also very attentive yet unobtrusive. Will definitely be checking out Lower Mekong too for their take on Vietnamese street food as the skewers I saw walking past were calling my name.

If my school memory serves me right, Mekong is actually one of the longest river in Asia that flows and forms the border between Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and even Vietnam! But I guess enough of the geography lesson for now and let's talk more about this latest addition to Kensington Street and the food they offer~

Mekong is the latest addition to the buzzing Kensington Street food scene and like its namesake, the restaurant meanders through different countries. As I’m browsing the menu, an amuse bouche of baby carrots is served. The chilli jam and pork floss that covers the carrots provides a stimulating start to the meal.

Kensington Street goes from strength to strength with the addition of Mekong. Chef Tiw Rakarin (Mama’s Buoi, Bang Luck) takes diners on a journey through Indochina, with a menu that draws inspiration and flavours from the region. Sydney is spoilt with an array of cheap and cheerful eateries which showcase the street food cuisine of continental Asia. Mekong offers a fine dining experience, with an emphasis on providing the flavours you are used to, complemented with innovative techniques and a level of refinement akin to David Thompson’s Sailors Thai and Longrain.
