Review Dare Cafe - Sydney

Michael Winger
Perfect healthy breakfast place located off Argyle street in the rocks. Excellent coffee. Lots of healthy delicious selections including vegan dishes, fresh smoked salmon, free range eggs, quinoa, chicken and avocado, pear and sweet potato salads. Home made banana and pumpkin breads. Fresh fruit smoothies and salads as well. Opens at 6am.

This is a favour haunt of mine when visiting Sydney. Located in the Rocks is great for breakfast and lunch. Why not give it a try when visiting the weekly market. Lots of #vegan options for me. Food is extremely tasty and very well presented.

I had eaten at Dare in the past & was so pleased we visited again. It is absolutely wonderful to find a cafe that caters for gluten free. I enjoyed banana pancakes & purchased pumpkin bread to take home. Everyone enjoyed their food. The only downside was as a party of 9 travelling from outside of Sydney, we made a booking about a week before our visit, however when we arrived the staff had to scramble around to find enough tables & chairs for us & we had to wait for our "pre-booked" table. However the food & coffee were worth the wait.

Was able to get an amazingly huge feed for breakfast from this cafe. Scrambled eggs were fluffy and delicious. You could've easily shared this and had another item on the menu. Coffee was great. Juice helped cut through the richness of the colossal breakfast.

This place is so quaint and ephemeral. The mood was light and perfect for an easy going midday brunch. Highly recommend 🥰

Reasonable prices. Delicious. As in almost every place you have free water. The hummus kebab is incredibly tasty, the veggie hummus plate is amazing. The peach iced tea tastes like flowers (L).

This café is located in the rocky area. It is delicious and many people are waiting in line. I love the decoration and decoration of this coffee shop. The price is not too expensive. Latte is good.

Amazing gluten free pancakes!! Loved every bite! Coffee and service is fantastic too.

It is a quaint little cafe in The Rocks.. quite busy on Sunday afternoons. We had a quick brunch .. the service was good ..

Such a beautiful location to have a meal on a warm sunny day. The chai latte was beautiful. Every dish was beautifully presented. I had the vegan plate which was a little bland but overall I was happy with the meal.

I like this Turkish style cafe. It only has outdoor seating but it’s nice for sunny and warm weekend.
Ordered meneman and added sausage for extra $4. The meneman itself was delicious but I didn’t like the sausage. The Turkish bread was tasty. Coffee was good too. I also ordered almond coconut cake and coconut cake with raspberry jam. The one with jam was better. The almond coconut was a little watery.
The staff was friendly but the service was slow.

My brief experience at DARE was delightful and one which I would enjoy again. DARE, which stands for 'Delicious and Responsible Eating', is a small friendly cafe which was just next to the markets that operate at The Rocks on Friday mornings. This is a gluten free haven where coeliacs can enjoy options which we usually aren't able to - think banana pancakes and loads of raw desserts! I had a slice of the gluten free banana bread which was served with fresh fruit salad. It was toasted, warm and quite moist, however could have done with a touch more sweetness to make it just that much more delicious. I paired my banana bread with a vanilla chai latte, served in an unusual but welcomed tall glass and fragrant rose petals. Wish I could have tried more gf options here in my short stay in Sydney!

Great little cafe at the rocks, food tasted wonderful and full of flavour (I had the Menemen, Turkish style scrambled eggs with bread). Only small downside was that the food went cold very quickly, and my smoothie was a bit too yoghurty.
Partner had the gluten free banana bread and said that was wonderful too!

We came here for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised with our experience! There is only outdoor seating, but the staff were very quick to turn on the heaters, which warmed us up on a cool morning!

Three of us shared the Big Aussie Brekkie Board and the Full Brekkie, which was plenty for us. Both dishes came with heaps of food, and well-cooked poached eggs. We did not have to wait too long, and the food was all hot. Whilst all standard ingredients, they were tasty and well prepared.

The coffee was also quite nice, and other than the missing foam on my cappuccino, I enjoyed it.

If you are able to share a few dishes, it is pretty good value!

Really nice place with a variety of different foods! Delicious food and drinks! Great location and very friendly staff. Would recommend this place for brunch with some friends!

Very cute and yum, good for brunch! Went with family and thought it was super sweet with vegan pancakes and cute drinks that come in mason jars. Will happily visit again sometime.

Great brekkie here after the Blackmores Bridge Run. Food was delicious and up to standards even though they were quite busy. Double bacon and egg roll was so yummy, a friend of mine got the vegan board which looked amazing. Will definitely be back

This very unassuming looking cafe in the heart of the Rocks visitors area was a surprise I must say. Despite the functional appearance and an expectation of overpriced and unremarkable food (aka "for the tourists") I had a very tasty Turkish version of scrambled eggs.
This was a lightly seasoned tomato based dish which could be added to to taste with the side of chilli flakes. I added the Turkish sausage also which although similar to chorizo, was less oily.
Nice to find something a little different on a breakfast menu and this was a pleasant surprise.
Coffee was a complete miss.
I wouldn't rush back but at 7:30am when its cool and quiet, maybe I got the timing right and it was ok.

Went there and got all four salads and one bowl and it was perfect and amazing! My friend is vegan and gluten free and they had plenty of options for her as well.

Food reasonable but at $6 for every add-on with your breakfast, a little pricey. Service dreadful. Nice waitress but she got part of the order wrong. Extremely disorganised when we tried to pay. Could have just walked off without paying if we'd wanted to. I don"t think they would even have noticed. Very rude woman in charge. Won't be going back.

Great location for a pit stop in the Rocks. I had the gluten free pide which felt like a real treat. The side salad was delicious and fresh. Service was friendly and quick enough.

This café has a great location, funky decor, and good local ingredients. Unfortunately, that experience was spoiled by poor customer service.

When we found a course, black hair wedged in the food (after only a couple of mouthfuls), the waitress was initially stumped for words. After picking it out with her fingers and telling us it was the fault of a local provider, she offered to have a new plate cooked for us. Neither of us felt hungry anymore, so politely declined. She gave us 1 cup of complimentary black coffee (between the two of us) as a substitute.

Clearly there was a communication issue inside, because when we got up to pay, the cashier charged us full price for everything, and wouldn't offer a discount until the original waitress came back and confirmed.

After a few minutes of very awkward waiting, and feeling like an inconvenience at the counter, the waitress showed up, made us wait while she typed an angry text message (to the person she believed was to blame), and then offered a few dollars off the $40 bill. Having eaten so little of the actual meal, this felt a little stingy, but by this point I just wanted to leave and end the awkwardness. Their facial expressions suggested they were glad to get rid of us, too.

Mixed Kebab was really good, and also big in portion. Their curry is highly recommended too. They have a cafe right next door, the coffee is good too. Friendly staff, great location!
Sarah Jean
Great fresh food and coffee! Had a delicious baked potato with a beautiful fresh salad. Great setting and friendly staff with quick service. Will be back !
Maximilian
Location is good! Very near to the harbour bridge but food is very BAD and sooo cheap food and you pay 50$ for a breakfast of 2! Not a place to go!

My Favourite. Absolutely love this place, I go every time I'm in the city.
Food is yummy and the staff are so lovely :)

‘Dare’ are well schooled in gluten free options and cross-contamination. You can order straight off the board – no need to feel like such a special needs kid.

Over priced & terrible service. Don't bother, very expensive, staff totally disorganised & rude.
Got our breakfast in bits not all together.
No children's menu, very difficult to do small portions. Bread on the roll was just a cheap 50c from the supermarket - nothing special

Worst customer service and coffee!. I had a terrible experience at Dare yesterday (27th Nov 2014) with a groupon deal.
We travelled a long distance to the cafe and arrived just before 3pm, and was rudely told off the restaurant stop serving at 2:30pm and said I had to make booking.

I showed her the Groupon offer voucher and the following Groupon email, which both clearly stated the lunch is available from 11-3:30pm, and 'walk in, no reservation required'. The waitress was very unapologetic, and said I should complaint to Groupon.

Since we lived far and there's no way we are coming back before the voucher expires, so we could just take away some left over wraps and coffee. The coffee were given to us with so much coffee dripping around the outside of the cups, and the barista didn't apologise and wasn't even willing to wipe off for us. In addition, the coffee was the worst I've ever tasted.

This is outrageous service and we definitely felt mistreated and didn't get our value for the purchase (we paid $25 for the crap)!

Will never come back.

Breakfast and Freshly Made Fruit Juice at the Rocks, Sydney. Went to Dare during a trip to the Rocks Saturday markets. Their service was fantastic. The portions were generous and the food was tasty. There is a variety of fresh fruit juices available - my family tried a few - lovely! A yes from me. They also have gluten free options available - I did not try it though.
Brunch On Joy
Groupon voucher - Two breakfast & small fresh juices $20. As a tourist destination, breakfast at the Rocks can be pricey so this $20 breakfast groupon deal for two was a great way to try out this gluten free, organic cafe. Last orders for breakfast is at 10.45am and interestingly, our meals were served on paper plates. Friendly service, the breakfast meals are a bit mish mash with basic healthy and fresh elements. I would recommend the fresh juices, might be better for the lunch fare instead of breakfast?

We had a great time at DARE , awesome food and great people , no idea about those bad reviews. I guess people had bad mornings. But I will definitely go back with My family.....

DO NOT MISS THIS SPOT!. Ignore the bad reviews .. the staff were friendly & helpful. My wife & I had a GROUPON VOUCHER and received
attentive & courteous service. The food was delicious & the juices were great. The manager(owner?) was "over
the moon" about getting some really fresh parsnips (earth still clinging to the roots) These people really try.

Forget those negative reports (especially about poor service) there are always two sides to a story & there
are always people who will demand seating even when there is none available!

Great food and juice!. Had a lovely lunch at Dare today. We used a Groupon, I had a fantastic kebab and the juice was very fresh and healthy.

The manager on was very helpful and accommodating - no issues at all.

Will definitely be back - great place to relax in the hustle of the rocks!

Top notch. Get the coconut with rum and all the food is the bees knees

Breakfast Groupon DARE Delicious and Responsible Eating. My husband and I had a Groupon Voucher for this eatery and started the day today missing the Ferry for Circular Quay,so caught the next one, walked around to the Rocks for Breakfast at Dare Delicious and Responsible Eating, and YES it certainly was delicious, we got a groupon before we left and it was so worth it, we apparently were given the wrong size orange juice so the owner gave us a coffee each only I had a hot chocolate as I don't drink coffee, we would never have known unless she told us, she was such a lovely person, could not do enough for us, was very very impressed, we will be back next time for sure,

Will not be going back. I went to Dare as a groupon customer, and was really disappointed. I was with a group of 7 people, 3 of which didnt have a groupon voucher and were paying full price. We were told we could not select where we wanted to sit as groupon costomers had been segregated. At this point I already felt like a second class customer. The food was served on paper plates, and it was ok, but not great. I thought it was overpriced.
As soon as we had finished, as whilst still bottle feeding a baby, the lady asked us for the table as she had more customers waiting.
Overall i though the service was rude, and the food wasnt that great to make up for it. I will not go back.

Extremely bad service. We went to visit a few friends who had travelled for 6 hours from the border of NSW and ask them to meet us at Dare as we bought a Group-on voucher to share. When we arrived and ask for a table of six. We were placed with two tables joined and the staff kept on asking us to move to another table which was not as big, just because they wanted to keep turning the customers. We ordered our breakfast and was not even ask how we wanted our eggs cooked. They completeley stuffed up our orders and gave us attutude continuously. As you sit and relax after eating and chatting, the manager approached us and said "as you all are finished we need to use the table for other visitors". It was like we only had a limited time to eat and have a coffee.
Or an also we had two babies with us and asked for a take away cup of hot water for the bottles and was refused as they wanted us to pay for it. (We went next door and they were glad to provide the water).
Very disappointing that it had to come to this review.
We will be writing to Group-on as well.
Ciao

Amazing food. For breakfast, I had banana pan cakes- the best I have ever eaten. The sweet potatoe vegetarian fritter served with homemade relish was also superb. The service was excellent and friendly. I would travel far to eat there again so if you are ever in the Rocks I heartily recommending DARE to anyone wanting a unique taste experience of scrumptious gluten-free food.

Happy Regular. As a regular customer to this café, I just want to commend them on the deliciously fresh food and friendly welcome I receive when I visit. Working in the city it's not always easy to find healthy options for lunch but they deliver. Keep up the good job guys there are people out there who appreciate what you're doing.

Above and beyond. We arrived in Sydney on a wet and rainy morning. Saw this café and ordered a muffin. As weary travelers we just needed a place to stay dry and rest till we could check into our hotel. But these people welcomed us in and went out of their way to help us. After phoning the hotel for us and not getting any response, they actually drove us to the hotel with all our luggage. Thank you so much, you made the start of our stay in Sydney so much more enjoyable.

Conflicted. I feel really bad writing this review as I think the lady who owns this business is trying really hard, but her staff or partner maybe letting her down. The lady dressed as a chef behind the right side counter is as miserable and cranky as you can get and should be put out the back of house. My scrambled eggs were below par and not good value, and when my wife asked for some butter for her toast from the woman who resembled the governor from the prison TV show "Wentworth" she may as well have asked for a loan, such was the frosty response. Add to that the similar contempt she displayed when a nice Asian tourist lady was confused with the menu. I saw a lovely lady with a smile and a sunny disposition turn up in a van with supplies and I am assuming this is the Owner she seemed lovely. For this reason I would give it another chance however I wouldn't go near the place whilst little miss cranky is serving customers.

Gluten free pancakes, full breakfasts, homemade frittatas, free range chicken curry & gluten free BEER AND KEBABS. As the owner of this café, It is very disturbing that customers can write such terrible things. If you come and visit us in the Rocks and are unhappy about ANYTHING, pl ask for me or Marcie or even email me & I will contact you directly. My staff work very hard and like all of you have bad days, which is absolutely NO EXCUSE for bad service.
If you are there and are unhappy about the service, the food, the weather, the birds, the trees, the parking, please ask for Marcie or Myself and we will do everything we can to fix the problem for you and make your visit to us worthwhile.
The cutlery by the way is BIODEGRADABLE corntarch and the plates are biodegradable made form plant based pulp from a yearly renewal source. The food is fantastic and freshly made. The cutlery is biodegradable cornstarch + not plastic + the prices are lower than most in the rocks. Great service .. Great coffee.. Amazing fresh healthy mostly gluten free food.

DO NOT EAT HERE. The service at Dare is absolutely appalling and the food even more so. Plastic cutlery, plates and cups doesn't scream 'responsible eating' to me either. The muesli in my yogurt was so tough it felt like it had been sitting outside for a week. Also, a fruit salad for $9.75?! Is the fruit lined with gold or something? I have also tried their salads which are incredibly small portions of rocket.. that cost an exorbitant amount too. Shocking that a place like this is still open for business in one of the busiest places in Australia. Do yourselves a favor and give it a big old miss.

Fantastic, I eat here regularly!. I LOVE Dare! I stumbled across this cafe on my weekly art class lunch break, and I literally look forward to going back each week! I am honestly surprised at some of the other reviews? The food is super fresh, and the salads are varied and with a large range of options. I love that they also have 'almond milk' (along with soy) as an option for coffees. The staff are always friendly and quick, and I can highly recommend this cafe for any raw foodies, gluten free types. I have never had a bad experience and can only speak highly of this cafe. There should be more of them around Sydney! Love!

What a disappointment!. We stopped in at Dare for some breakfast while browsing the market - it was TERRIBLE!

They frothed the milk in my Mum's cup of tea as if it was a cappuccino (weird) and got my order wrong.

Upon me politely letting them know that this was not the meal I ordered, they were unapologetic and dumped a dry sweet potato fritter on my plate (part of the meal I had actually ordered), but didn't bother with making me what I had a paid for.

Although we were eating in, our meals were served on paper plates and mugs, as if we couldn't be trusted with crockery.

Both meals were cold and very unpleasant.
Don't bother with Dare - we wished we went next door.

Love the gluten free options, especially the pancakes.. My favourite! I often come in just for the salads. Love everything on the menu! Freshly squeezed juices with a muffin to go is the quick Pitt stop. Thanks Dare for amazing food

Incredibly disappointed. We were killing time before doing the bridge walk and both needed somethibg to eat. Just because your name suggests 'responsible eating', does not give you the right to outrightly degrade a customer. My partner ordered a chocolate milkshake as he doesn't like tea or coffee, the lady behind the counter continued with a tyrade of how this was disgusting etc. For about 5 minutes. Won't be back. Service was appauling and food was incredibly overpriced. Don't waste your time or money.
Fiona
Food nice. Coffee weak - but that's Sydney for you. They serve everything on disposable plates, with compostable cutlery and paper cups. I find it hard to believe that this can be more environmentally friendly than washing crockery. Disappointing.
Soo
Great food, service, menu choice and pricing. Fantastic gluten free, healthy food. We had the breakfasts - interestingly enough served on biodegradable plates with cutlery that looked liked plastic but we were advised they are cornstarch, as there is no plastic in the shop!
breakfast was delicious - had the vegetarian breakfast and the big breakfast.
The gluten free chocolate brownie was delicious and the coffee - (Toby's Estate) very good.
Defintiely a good choice and lots of gluten free food
Erin
Where do I begin, terrible service, terrible food, extremely over priced. When we arrived we were told we could still order breakfast after 12, when we tried to order our food we were told we could not order breakfast anymore and they were very rude. The eggs were overcooked and served on bread instead of toast. The staff were unfamiliar with their menu. I will never be coming here again and I advise others to go somewhere else unless you want your food cooked in a kitchen with pigeons walking in and out. Such a shame because it is in a great location. We ended up giving the manager some feedback that their breakfast is terrible, nothing was done about this, they proceeded to ignore us until we left. Shocking.
Leigh
Horrible. Poor service, no communication between staff. We're told there was breakfast and the there wasn't breakfast. "Toast" wasn't toasted...eggs over cooked and everything was OVER priced and pigeons in the kitchen. Cheers Sydney

I come to the Rocks Markets regularly & have always wanted to try the food...it looks amazing & is always busy. I'm really disappointed! I had a salmon frittata with a limp salad. The frittata was dry & was 80% potato...it didn't say salmon & potato frittata on the menu! My mother had an omelette with an even limper salad...probably the worst Omlette I've ever tasted. The lady who took my order was almost rude. Food is on paper plates with plastic cutlery & our tea was served in takeaway cups....& we were eating in!! The Turkish fare looks amazing & so do their cakes...obviously this is the forte not omelettes & frittatas & salad!! Ladies behind the counter put a smile in your face & look happy, don't be dismissive with your customers...we are always right!! If the food & service was better I wouldn't have minded the paper plates & plastic cutlery!!!
