If you are ever in Sydney I highly recommend a visit to Mamak. I noticed it because every night there was a huge queue of people outside, and let’s be honest if a restaurant attracts a queue then it has to be a good one. As you queue up you can watch the chefs making fresh roti, which keeps you entertained while you wait.
Roti canai was so fluffy. The curry sauces were amazing, and the sambal sauce was a nice contrast of spicy and slightly sweet. Nasi lemak was good, but the anchovies were quite salty. Efficient and quick service.
IMHO, Mamak lives up to all the hype. There was a line out the front of the place before it opened and I can understand why. The egg roti was light and fluffy but very filling, the Dahl it was served with was soooo good. Can also speak very highly of the vegetarian curry. Will be back next time I’m in town for sure!
Authentic delicious Malaysian food. We ordered Roti canai, Murtabak with chicken, Kari ikan, Kari sayur. They do lunch specials on some of the mains between $13-$17 which is awesome.
The vegetable curry was a little watery and tasteless compared with the other dishes but still delicious and great value for money!
Hubby had a Chicken Curry Nasi Lemak and some Roti. He said it was absolutely beautiful. Service was very friendly also.
Ordered from Uber eats and delivery was within 30 minutes. Absolutely delicious food, one of the best Malaysian restaurants I have ever had food from. I had the roti with sauces and satay chicken sticks and both where great. Will definitely order food from here again.
Excellent food (5/5 stars): Best Malaysian food in the city. Fried chicken is excellent!!
Roti is excellent, made fresh and to order with yummy sauce. Noodles with the shrimp and veggies is an excellent dish, flavors r balanced and tasty.
Water spinach is a hit or miss, unfortunately sometimes it’s burnt, it has shrimp paste which I don’t like cuz it’s fishy so they r happy to remove the shrimp paste ingredient for me upon request.
Beef skewers r excellent, has a lemongrass flavor and side of cucumber and fresh red onions, they grill it fresh so it is nice and hot, love love this dish for appetizer.
The milk drink that’s half coffee half tea tastes excellent but is warm temperature, I prefer hot temperature which they said they can’t do for some odd reason, unfortunately. It’s caffeinated.
Complaint: I notice when I come here right when it opens for dinner, the fried chicken (and possibly some other dishes too) is not made to order, it’s warm/cool instead of hot temperature so they must make it ahead of time and let it sit which doesn’t taste as good as when they make it fresh to order. I suggest they change this and fry it fresh upon order. For this reason, I avoid coming right when restaurant opens....I come an hour or so after opening so the food is cooked fresh and is extra hot!
Vibe: (2/5 stars) restaurant is too small, too crowded, way too noisy so it is hard to have conversation. They should move to a bigger location. Lacks windows inside so it feels tight.
Service: average. No issues. Take away is good.
I come here often. Food is so yum. Highly recommend. There’s usually a long line.
Love the roti here! Busy place with lines by 6pm, wait was roughly 5-10min. Compact place inside, with decent service. Ordered the egg roti & chicken cabbage roti & vege curry goreng - all were amazing
Favourite was the egg roti as it reminded me of chinese scallion pancakes - but with more filling, super crispy and was delicious with the sauce.
Also ordered roti bomb with ice cream & pandan roti for dessert - both were super tasty, guilty pleasure foods
Great Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown !
Good food and good service
One of my absolute favorite place to eat or get takeaway. I love the Nasi Lemak with prawn, the flavours agree with my palate so much! Perfect place to go for dates or with friends. It can be a little squishy space wise but once you try the food it'll be worth it. Depending on your tolerance for spicy food most dishes here contain spice so careful with what you order, luckily for me I love spicy food, the flavours are on point! Highly recommend!
This post is for all those foodie those who might travel to Sydney in future for holidays or for business trip must try this restaurant.....
Mamak...a tamilan word means mama is originated from Tamil language, if you look at history lot of tamilans moved to Malaysia and from there this mamak ...and open food stalls came into picture.
Three friends went to kulalumpur from Sydney to learn Malaysia cooking as they always missed Malaysian satay and and cuisine in Sydney. After learning basics they came back and open this beautiful restaurant called MAMAK - which is know for its roti and satay.
Malaysian cuisine is very much close to Indian cuisine therefore I found this restaurant very interesting.
Whenever I use to go to Sydney I always wanted to dine in this restaurant but because of long que and waiting I couldn't due to shortage of time.
So this time I tried to pitch in early as soon as restaurant opened at 17:30 I was there bang at restaurant made a vlog, grab some info about brand and history from manager and then enjoyed a thin roti crunchy from outside with dal, fish curry and shrimp paste costed me aud 8 equals to Rs 400/usd 6
Then it followed by chicken satay which was different from thai satay ofcourse and main course was a Malaysian style noodles.
I was alone so could not finish it but I must say this restaurant has made it name in market within no time have only three branches as they are not into very big scale, two in sydney and one in Melbourne.
If you have love for Malaysian food and missing Indian food palate in Sydney then I recommend you to visit this restaurant.
Here sharing few picture.
Hope you gonna love them.

This restaurant was quite nice. The roti was fantastic. I always enjoy watching the pastry chefs make the roti through the glass window. The only downside was that it was very cramped, with the tables being very close to each other. Because there were so many people inside, it was very loud and therefore hard to hear.
Food: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Ambience: 6/10
Love all the types of roti! The sweet ones and the salty ones! Love the curry dishes although there is always long lines but this is a really great restaurant
Awesome place I should say. Loved this place. The place is crowded and you will have to wait outside for a pretty long time. We tried their Nasi goreng, chicken satay , Rotis and their desserts. They have roti based desserts. They are too good.
A nice place to go for my fix of rotis and favourite Malaysian dishes. A wonderful reminder of home although the prices are very much Sydney! Still, you can't do better if you are after fluffy, buttery and flaky rotis paired with an assorted variety of curries. The nasi lemak is good too and I like it with the curry chicken.
Mamak is now one of my FAVOURITE Malaysian restaurant in Sydney. Now I can tell you this - the food here is outstanding, authentic and top of the class!! Even though some of the dishes here can be a little bit pricey, but it's still worth it due to their delicious food. Also, it has a very nice atmosphere to dine at & great service (looking at their staff working and cooking in great cohesion). Definitely coming back here again! I also highly recommend people coming here and trying out this place.
Been craving Roti Canai since my Singapore days and now it's all completed since I've ate at Mamak. I had the Roti Canai, I love the curry. I don't know about anyone else but I think their Nasi Lemak with the added chicken is the best I've ever had.
What can I say... there was a line outside when we came here so I knew it was going to be good. The food was authentic, full of spice and flavour, fast and delicious. The dishes came out at a very decent pace and steaming hot. Portions are decent and prices are pretty cheap. I loved the sweet roti with ice cream - very unique looking and tasted like caramelised toffee.
Always be the best malaysian food in town! Long queues everyday (especially dinner) handmade roti and their dishes just like in malaysia. If you looking for spicy this is one of a good place for you!
Have been visiting this venue many times. Tried their roti bawang, roti telur bawang, mee goreng, curry and more but the favourite so far is ayam berempah. Their mee goreng was quite yum too.
This popular venue could be busy with customers during lunch time so you might wanna arrive early.
When I first heard about the apparent long wait for Mamak I was a bit hesitant thinking whether it was worthwhile but I'm so glad I went with my gut instinct and had decided to go for it. Everything about Mamak deserves praise and goes the rating goes beyond 5 stars!
Fortunately on the day we went there was no line to wait and we were quickly greeted and sat at our table.
We ordered the Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken, and a vegetarian Mee Goreng. The Nasi Lemak is by far the most flavourful I have ever had! The coconut rice had a strong creamy coconut taste to it with a hint of saltiness. The curry chicken and the homemade Sambal sauce that accompanied had a strong aroma of all the spices used. It paired so well as the heat of the curry and sambal was taken down a bit with the coconut rice.
For drinks we got hot Teh Tarik and a Lime Water. The Teh Tarik unfortunatley was a but bland for my liking but drinks are always such a great compliment.
The Chendol for dessert was one of the most interesting Malaysian desserts I've had so far! As soon as I saw it had gula melaka I was sold! I thought it was supposed to be a mountain of shaved ice (like the usual Asian desserts) but the chendol here had about half a bowl of ice over some delicious gula melaka, coconut cream with a generous layer of pandan noodles underneath. What a great way to end the meal that was full of aromatic and flavourful mains.
Mamak is by far the best Malaysian restaurant in all areas of service and quality of food, that I've been too. It's most definitely worth the wait and the visit! It is most certainly a place that I look forward to going back to!
Spotted this place when I was wandering around Chinatown and I absolutely loved all the foods! They offer authentic taste of Malaysian food--which is kind of similar with Indonesian food--with pretty affordable price.
I tried Nasi Goreng and totally loved every part of it. No wonder people don't mind to queue for minutes to eat here. Definitely one of the best Asian restaurants in Sydney!
It’s been our family fave since 2008.. Mamak open till late and always crowded!! We love to eat all their food.. the most are roti tissue and roti bomb.. sometimes we came only to have these 2 😊
We were wandering in the lanes of Sydney and wanted to try some nice food at the heart of the city. During some shopping from the QVB mall, we asked the salesgirl about a place which serves superb food, she referred Mamak!
Food- This happens to be a casual Malaysian food place, it was pretty crowded and looked like that they have their loyal clientele.
We were hungry and w/t wasting much time, we started ordering our food.
We ordered their signature Nasi lemak(This is the traditional Malaysian food, it was very flavoursome and delicious)
Sweet roti for dessert (It was conical looking dosa type dessert, extremely crispy and sugar dusted generously with a Small scoop of vanilla ice cream. I have never had something so simple and tasty!)
Customer service- Very quick service. The servers are all young girls and they seem to understand the trick to keep the customer happy is smile
Value for money- Moderate
Ambience- Very basic decor
This place had a line to get in. I’m so glad we waited cause the food was worth the wait!!
Every we ordered was delicious and fresh. Service was quick and staff were friendly.
Highly recommend this place.
Love the roti canai and roti tisu :) very busy place. Overall very good. Fish curry nice. The mee goreng magi is okay. I will come back to try more dishes
One of the go-to Malaysian restaurants for some amazing paper-thin, flaky roti or some spicy curry with rice. They have weekday lunch options ($11+), which are slightly cheaper and served with rice.
Be wary of visiting during peak hours, as there will be a long line outside but there are actually empty tables inside. They appear to be under-staffed so even when they have already cleared and prepped the tables, staff aren't available to herd the next round of customers in and it will take some time to flag someone to take orders.
Mamak just like how my grandmother made it!
The quality of the dishes was really presentable and delicious. We had 4 different dishes to eat, the martabak was the heaviest one. Staff was great, welcoming and friendly. During that time the place was packed, the food took a bit longer but they made sure that the food comes out nicely.
The restaurant looks old school and gives the vibe of Malaysia and Indonesian restaurant. Reminds me when I was dining in Jakarta.
Every Malaysian restaurant in Sydney has been on my radar since I moved here - trying to recapture the magic of Malaysian food is always high on my radar!
I have been to Ho Jiak Haymarket and Malacca Straits, and while both of those are awesome and well worth a visit, Mamak stands out in a different way because of their limited, carefully curated menu that brings the best and brightest of traditional Malaysian cuisine (the 'mee's, 'nasi's and rotis) to Sydney.
I recommended the nasi lemak to my friend - she had hers with the vegetarian curry and I had mine with the prawn sambal. I also ordered a teh tarik, and while it was extremely flavorful and refreshing, I was a tiny bit disappointed that it wasn't as sweet as I like it ;)
Service is prompt and pleasant, and the queue outside is testament to the quality and popularity of the place.
I'll be going back for sure! I have my eye on the many varieties of roti, and would like to make a meal of all of them :D
Everybody I know comes here for the roti canai; being Malaysian (and seeing I know how to make roti myself), the main drawcard for me, frankly, is the rojak mamak which is often just too bothersome to make in small quantities at home - I love the light and crispy texture of the fritters and the perfect balance of sweetness and spice in the sauce.
The place is always busy. We ordered roti canai, nasi lemak, ayam goreng, lamb curry, and roti pisang with vanilla ice cream. Roti canai comes with chicken curry and dahl (somekind of lentils soup), the roti tastes amazing. Very buttery! The nasi lemak was good especially with lamb curry on the side, the fried chicken was very tender inside and super crispy on the outside. Roti pisang was remarkable, the roti is very crispy and the pisang i sweet plus the ice cream makes it a perfect combo!
When I moved to Sydney, trying to find options to eat near office, came across Mamak ( you pronounce it as Mama BTW). When I tried for the first time, immediately hooked to the taste. Since then I've had numerous visits everytime I had cravings for spicy seafood. Service is always affable and if I'm lucky I would get a seat in 5 min otherwise need to stand in a long line.
Mamak has become such an iconic place, it is one of the must visits for anyone who travels to Sydney ( most of the people who come here are tourists ). Everytime my order is served, I'm too excited to eat and that is why only 2 photos 😄.
Wanted to share this as this place has become my go to lunch spot and want to appreciate them for what they are doing.
My favourite Malaysian place in Sydney! There is a reason why there is always a queue outside, it’s so tasty and authentic! My fave is the roti canai, you can see them making it fresh from the window. I love how it is so crispy and flakey, I always otdet
My own as I don’t share! The mi foreng noodles is also a favourite as well as the nasi lemak rice combination. Great authentic Malaysian food here, always a favourite!
Been to this place so many times.
They do some really good malaysian food but I am in love with their lamb curry.Do try their desserts as well.
Good food and good service . It would help though if the staff explained the dishes a bit and also suggest what to try for the first time .
Overall I enjoyed the experience
I've been here couple times and I like some of the food. The menu is limited, which I appreciate because I have trouble choosing sometimes. I ordered roti canai, nasi lemak with fried chicken, chicken curry and sambal prawns. Roti canai is nice, I didn't really like the curry sauce, but the roti is very flaky and taste good. Sambal is great! I'm not a fan of the curry chicken but I appreciate the sambal prawns. I mostly come here for the fried chicken, I quite like it. Service is prompt and I always have to line up to enter here.
Like other reviews said, this place was always busy in lunch or dinner time. We went there for dinner. There were some queue but it's so fast.
We ordered crispy chicken, fried rice, and kangkung. They were all yummy and in a good portion to share to 2-3 people. So great so that I forgot to take picture. Hahaha. The service was quick and nice.
good authentic Malaysian food in Sydney. always order their signature roti telur, curry chicken and nasi lemak. maggie mie goreng also good and tasty. my son loves ayam berempah which is delightful and full of spices.
for dessert, you can't go wrong with roti tisu. it's crispy version of roti shaped like a cone with a side of ice cream. it's so sweet and sugar intense, big no if you are on diet.
Excellent food! Just like back in Malaysia! Loved the Nasi lemak, can really taste the coconut santan in the rice, along with the sambal and the deep fried anchovies, just the way nasi lemak should be. And the rendang too was so good! When I visit Sydney next I must definitely come back again!
Tried the Roti canai as a take away...all neatly boxed. It was to die for. The Roti was cooked to perfection and fluffy. The seafood dips were lip smacking!! A must try.
There is always a line for this place at night! They serve one of the best malaysian food in Chinatown to be honest! You definitely get for what you pay! The quality is amazing, from their stir fries to their skewers and their roti’s. The service is attentive. Highly recommend this place!
Without a doubt, the best roti in Sydney (possibly Australia even!). The fried chicken is pretty awesome too but I've tried all the curries and they are fairly average. Love the roti tissue for dessert as well and love the fact that it's open until the early hours on weekends and you can come here after a night out. Great for groups and not bad on the wallet either.
I visited Mamak on Friday at lunch time with a friend. For starters, we had the roti with two dipping sauces. The roti was so crispy, flaky and easy to pull apart to share. The accompanying sauces were a flavour bomb and kept you going back in for more. For our mains, we took advantage of the $13 lunch specials and I had the fish curry with rice. The curry was a generous portion, jam packed full of flavour and had plenty of flaky fish. This is definitely a spice lovers dish which is how the descriptor 'tangy" should be interpreted.
Overall, the experience at Mamak was great and perfect for a one hour lunch break.
I can definitely see why there is always a line up to get into this place! Amazing rotis, Curry’s, Satay and Fried chicken! All great value for money! Service is quick and friendly!! I’ll be back
We arrived in Mamak just 5 minutes before its opening time and there was already a long line outside.
***
Service:
They were able to seat everyone efficiently right when they opened their doors at 5:30pm. They immediately took our order and served it quickly as well.
Food:
Their chicken satay was my favourite, followed by the different kinds of roti (sweet or savoury). The lamb curry and coconut-rice were so-so.
Location:
It’s right in Chinatown. It’s hard to miss, given the line outside.
***
I still dream about the chicken satay’s peanut sauce. Mamak was a good experience and I’m definitely gonna be back.
I have been going here for years and have always found the food to be consistently excellent. I think other diners also feel this way as the restaurant is always busy, even for a late weekend lunch.
We ordered a few dishes on our most recent visit, including the original roti (highly recommend), the prawn salad, the spicy sambal cuttlefish, and the chicken curry. I tried everything and found it hard to pick a clear standout from the four dishes. We also shared the four dishes amongst 3 people and found it incredibly filling.
The service and ambience here is very standard. The restaurant is a bit nicer than other Asian restaurants in Chinatown though, and very clean. However, it is very cold inside due to the AC being turned way up. Highly recommend this place for excellent Malaysian, though I also think there are cheaper options in the city for the same quality of food.
Have been here a few times and the one in Melbourne CBD a couple times also. This outlet pips it out of the two. The last time we went to the Melbourne one I felt there was a bit of salt or MSG overload. Happy with the overall consistency from both.
Really enjoyed the lamb curry and spicy tiger prawns on my most recent visit last week. Roti is a must, can’t help yourself if you have to wait outside watching the roti-making“show”. They were a bit stingey with the rice though for 3 adults, there was plenty of left over sauce. From previous experiences, other meals were fine.
It’s great that they have BYO and I would recommend going after the dinner peak time, as you don’t feel like you are being rushed so they can re-sit the table. Service is fast and efficient and would definitely go back as it is convenient and get good consistency.
Mamak is certainly my city Malaysian craving go to restaurant. I absolutely love that you can see the chefs making the famous roti right in the windows from the outside, and you can see the loads of butter and love that it takes to make all that flakey deliciousness. The restaurant itself is small and barely decorated, but it definitely has that fast-food vibe all the while with a very family aura. It really does look a bit chaotic in Mamak, and there is always always a line extending outside waiting for a table. The menu is quite concise featuring only a few things. I tend to always stick to the standard roti canai order, with the wonderfully delicious dahl, and sambal - seriously this is so unbelievably delicious here. I love the dessert roti's here too (they are all wonderful). Service here is friendly, and the food takes no time at all to reach. Better yet the prices at Mamak are wonderfully cheap for the food you are served. Do yourself a favour and check out the amazing food here!
Stopped by Mamak for a quick bite for lunch. We ordered the ayam goreng, mee goreng, roti canai and chicken satay. Also ordered Ais Teh and Ais Milo to wash it all down. Mamak is an excellent representation of Malaysian cuisine and lives up to its reputation. Each dish was very fresh and flavourful. The three stars were the roti (flaky exterior and chewy centre), the satay (which in my haste to eat I forgot to take a photo of) and the price!
Decent Malay food. Portions are a bit small than I expected. They give you the option to doggy bag the leftover. But, they don't allow bills to be split. For Mamak fans, they also put up stalls on the Chinatown Food Street just behind Holiday Inn.
Malaysian food for supper is always the best! This mamak place is quite busy even at 12 midnight. But we now know why. Their roti that we tried was fantastic, quite authentic with the ones you have in Malaysia. Usually it is hard to impress me on the Malaysian roti but I like the roti here. We had roti planta and roti telur and served it with the two curry dips and sambal. Their satay is also very tasty, let’s just say we come home with a happy stomach.
Wow this place is pack. If you want seats, maybe go by yourself or in smaller groups to get a table quicker.
Tried the Nasi lamek with fried chicken. Coconut rice was fragrant, samba was really little, everything else was standard, nothing to rave about, the fried chicken was the standout. Crispy with chilli sambal flavours. I would recommend ordering the fried chicken with the Nasi Lamek. It’s extra ($3.50) you need to pay however, but makes the whole dish so worth it.
Tried some of their roti that was offered by a friend. It’s light and puffy and adding the egg in it makes it so good. The curries for dipping was average though.
Serving was quick. Great place for traditional Malaysian food. This place isn’t packed and busy for no reason.
This place is awesome. Hand made roti, Great noodles and other dishes. There's always a queue though, but they open quite late at night which is handy
Went here today for the first time and it was great. The food was outstanding, the service also was quick despite entering during the lunch rush.
Been here in a late Friday night.
Food:
Ordered sambal cuttlefish for main, egg & onion roti, fried chicken and satay beef.
Sambal cuttlefish was cooked very well, sweet and spicy, full of flavour. Cuttlefish was very tender and juicy. It’s the best of the night.
Roti is a disappointment honestly. The technic was there, you can tell by looking at the staff preparing them. But when you eat that, you will know that the ingredient was not carefully selected. They are vegetable oil and margarin no doubt. I know I am very picky and annoying , but when you thinking about how bad they are for your body, you know that’s not what you want.
Fried chicken is average, satay beef is chewy and dry( but I don’t know if it’s supposed to be like that)
All the dipping sauce for roti and satay is taster than the main :)
Environment:
Very noisy and crowded. I can’t say I feel totally relaxed at there :( but open until 2am is a bonus.
Very busy. Queue stretching out the door on a Tuesday night. Ordered nasi goreng and it was good. Closes at 10:00pm. The menu was not large. Must try the rotisserie next time.
My food Mecca!!! Will always come here rain hail or sunshine whenever I’m in town, and no matter how long the queue was. If you’re by yourself or two you’ll get a table easier.
I’ve been here at least 5 times and it’s never ever missed a beat. The only criticism would be over the size of the table because with so many good dishes to order you’re gonna was up with a full table, fast.
My recommendation is to go with only 1 other person so that you get a table faster. In this situation my go to order would be the Roti Canai and 1 dozen mixed satay to begin, then get a Nasi Lemak with fried chicken and add a second piece of chicken with extra sambal and the lamb curry or the Kari ayam.
Everything is perfect, the portions are just right and the service is quick and consistent.
Bring a six pack from red bottle around he corner as well. BYO only but the fee is $2 per person which means with a $20 six pack your beers are only $4 each. Quick maths.
Mee goreng, nasi goreng thoese were actually nothing special but delicious. But highly recommend the Roti Tisu! Sweet and bit salty and soooooo good with ice cream. Although the ice cream is too less it’s okay the roti is delicious enough to have by itself
Great Malaysian food! We had a fluffy Roti canai with two delicious, spicy sauces, lamb curry with juicy, tender meat cooked in a flavorsome thick Sambal, and fantastic charcoal grilled chicken skewers served with thick Satay sauce. We also had two drinks: lemon tea and iced lime drink. Both drinks were unfortunately overloaded with sugar. Overall, a very enjoyable and well priced lunch! We will definitely be back to try other dishes and the fabulously looking dessert: shaved, flavoured ice.
Quite oily for nasi goreng but besides that everything was tasteful :) nicely cooked ayam goreng smacked our lips 🍗🍗 Moreover as it was my favorite asian cuisine, just enjoyed everything 😁😁
I love this place and go every time I’m in Sydney at least twice! It’s advisable to arrive before they open as a line forms and you could wait a while. The roti canai is amazing-super light and fluffy with sauces to lap up that range from mild to hot and act as a good appetizer. The Satays have a perfect peanut sauce and are very authentic Malaysian style satays. The chicken curry is hearty and wholesome and serves all palettes-whether you can stomach spicy food or not. It gets busy but the staff are attentive. It’s a must try for anyone who is in Sydney!
Went out to dinner with friend trying Spiced Chicken “Ayam Berempah”, and it was quite good. Martabak was nice but prefer something more crispy. Roti tisu as dinner quite good. Overall, satisfied with Mamak !!
Before we left for Sydney I was already doing my background work, one place which popped up every single time was Mamak. To be completely honest the thought, "It's just roti and satay, big deal." crossed my mind. Then I find out people line up for an hour to get a seat. "Really," I thought, "For roti and satay?" We nearly didn't go but I kept reading how great it is, curiosity got the better of me. Yes, this is another one of those eateries with a lineup. Call me old fashioned, I hate lining up for a restaurant. So there we were in a line with all the other hopefuls, almost like we were lining to get tickets to a concert. For the rest of the review is at Onlyifitsgood.com.au
It has been a few years since I last been to Mamak, there's been so many Malaysian restaurant openings in the last few years, one no longer have to queue for ages here for a roti & lasi lemak fix. Busy & hot Friday night so there's a wait of about 20 mins, hungry & sweaty by the time we got seated. We cool down with a couple of cold drinks, lemon ice tea & a cendol (they serve it as a dessert in a bowl). The food never disappoints, we had the fish curry, water spinach and the lamb roti. Love the curry, it was spicy, but totally worth the sweats. I would prefer a plain roti or the butter version, with the meat filling was bit too heavy. Prices is reasonable, the 2 of us couldn't finish all the food, so for $60 there was enough leftover for lunch as well.
I’ve recently been in a Malaysian crave and decided to try out Mamak. It’s a little shop tucked away in Chinatown which has a half open kitchen making, frying and chucking out homemade rotis one at a time.
My favourite was indeed the roti canai, a homemade roti served with two curries and sambal sauce. The roti was light, fluffy, buttery and crispy! A must get when you visit mamak!
Chicken and beef skewers were a hit and miss. Although the chicken skewers tasted amazing! It was slightly both dry and over cooked. The peanut sauce was overly sweet and took away the glory from the skewers.
Fried chicken and chicken curry were interesting and a little overpowering. The fried chicken was certainly amazing! Hot, tender and juicy fried chicken which was worth the price!
The chicken curry was another miss as the spices over powered the overall taste. This definitely did not taste like authentic Malaysian chicken curry.
love loved the food. heard great reviews but never been in to try due to long lines waiting to get a table. The wait was worth it. very fast service in spite of it being so busy. The manager was a lovely friendly man who actually wanted to know if we were happy after the mean. will be back for sure
This was my first ever Malaysian experience and I was not disappointed. Such glorious flavours with the mixing and matching of curry sauces, sambal and roti. So many options to choose from but had to narrow it down and started with the Roti Canai - The original roti, crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside with two curry dips and a spicy Sambal sauce. Roti was exactly what the description said the only sad part was I wanted more and more. I would’ve happily just eaten ten more roti with my meal it was so light and fluffy and tasted great with all the curry sauces. Sambal had a great fishy taste but could’ve been a touch spicier for me. I have to highly recommend the chicken and beef satay sticks, served with a sweet and sour peanut sauce. This dish is an absolute stunner with combination flavours that are so right. Have to admit the beef sticks were my favourite, they were super juicy and slipped right off the stick then melted nicely into the sauce. Of course for my final meal I had to pick the Nasi Lemak with fragrant coconut rice which was accompanied by an ensemble of sambal, peanuts, crispy anchovies, cucumber, a hard boiled egg and curry chicken. Once placed in front of me I could smell all the heavenly aromas that were rising from my plate. My mouth started to water in such excitement to be able to sample everything. I didn’t know where to start! I would have never thought anchovies could taste this good. Curry chicken was tear apart tender. Everything worked so well together and I really loved every mouthful. Seriously all were a delicious bite.
This one place we visited several times during our stay in Sydney. It serves excellent Malaysian food.simpliy loved the Roti Channai here.

Would definitely visit again on my next trip.
This is one of the least eye catching restaurant. Neither the interior or exterior was something to remember. It was very lively on Saturday evening. We were seated at a tiny table for two along the wall. The menu was short and simple, coming to a decision was relatively easy. Service was decent for such a busy restaurant.
Satay skewers were great but nothing special. Mi goreng wasn’t visually pleasing but I was surprised. All the flavours you expect from it but more refined and char from the wok just takes it to the next level. However, it was just slightly too salty for me. Chicken curry was average, extremely clove forward and chicken pieces were dry. Would recommend to try the mi goreng here.
I loveeeeeeeee all their food!!!!! omg so yum! Soooo super tasty and tender and they serve in generous amoount! I've been here and to other Mamak branches many times! Love Mamak so much, although can be long but who cares! Worth the wait if you're getting great food like this! XD
Also service was really quick, people are rally nice! The only thing is, place can be really packed so yeah, can be bit congested inside.
Hence, I still love this place. 4.5 starts for you guys!!! Spread love!!!
They serve good fresh food with amazing taste. They serve the best Rotis. Is reasonably priced. There is a long queue up for seat waiting.
Will definitely go back again.
This was my second visit to “Mamak” located in a bylane of Sydney’s Chinatown, the first one being 8 years back during my last stay in Sydney. The restaurant hasn’t changed much…… nor has it's food. Just like in Mumbai, due to an uneven ratio between its popularity and space, people queue up for taste of this popular Malaysian joint, the inside is as equally noisy, the glass-walled transparent kitchen is hygienic and you get to see some culinary skill display of young chefs (who I suppose are mostly students working part-time) while waiting outside. The waiter/waitresses too are a young bubbly lot, so the service is speedier.
I cannot claim to be an authority on Malaysian cuisine as I haven’t visited Malaysia yet. And to evaluate Malaysian food outside Malaysia would be as unjust as passing a verdict on Chinese food in Desi Chinese restaurants in India.
But similarities between Malaysian and Indian dishes seemed more evident. Now which one influenced or draws inspiration from the other would be the archetypal “Chicken or Egg First? “Argument.
Roti Canai” is nothing but a cousin of Malabar/Kerala Parota , Maida kneaded into dough and rolled several times over in oil to give that crisp flaky texture, served with three sauces, One is a plain Sambal – just lentils in milder masala like our Sambar, another pungent tasty sauce whose name I didn’t ask, and a teaspoon of red shrimp paste. Roti planta is a variant stuffed with butter inside with same accompanying sauces. If you do not delve too deep into authenticity, I would say the Chicken satay I ordered were tiny rubbery pieces as compared to the meaty ones I have tried in Mumbai restaurants, and frankly, I found the side serving of Mumbai Peanut sauce to be better.
Both the times of my visit weren’t suitable for Lunch or dinner, so I couldn’t try any of their Main course.
Another speciality of the restaurant is water served in Glass bottles for free unlike any other restaurants abroad. Worth a visit if you happen to be in Sydney and wish to try something different from the usual burger, Thai , Chinese and Indian fare that is abundant here……..
Was not sure what to expect, but it came recommended as the best Malaysian restaurant in town. And it did not disappoint. Food was AMAZING. The chicken satay skewers were great, as was the dal with fresh bread. Fish curry was a little spicy, but still excellent. But good that we decided to go for the desert, even though we were pretty full already. It was to die for! Make sure to order it with the rest of the food as it takes a while to prepare. But absolutely worth it.
Haven’t been in years, so went back again last this weekend. The roti is as delicious as I remember, and the noodles were full of flavour. Everything is cooked fresh and comes out quick. Was less impressed by the curry and satay, but it was still good.
Be prepared for a queue, but it moves relatively quickly. It’s also BYO.
Walked in when they first opened in the morning around 11:30 on a Sunday, the restaurant was quiet. Lots of friendly staff, clean place, fast service!! Within a few minutes of walking in and sitting down, staff brought out cutlery, cups and water. Ordered online, didn’t have to wait that long for food to come out either! The food itself was TO DIE FOR!! As a Malaysian myself, the food here was definitely the closest that I have had to authentic Malay cuisine. Definitely satisfied my craving for comfort food!! Highly recommend!! Only downside was that they weren’t making their offered drinks at the time and only offered soft drink. But of course, there’s next time!! Thank you staff for the amazing service and food!!
Always seen how busy this place was, on the weekend we came in before the rush at lunch. What a great place, staff were friendly and helpful. We had order some chicken skewer, nasi lemek and the roti canai. The food was awesome, really enjoyed the chicken skewers and the rice dish was so flavourful. Abit disappointed with roti, it like the they forgot about the dish. Came out dead last 30 mins after everything else, we saw other table come in after and receive their before us. Other then that really enjoyed our meal and couldn't fault the dishes.
It’s been a while since I have revisited Mamak. While the queues seem to have dissipated, this place still demonstrates you can be rewarded for doing what you do both simply and well. Pandemic changes have seen ordering and payment move onto your phone. Waiters seat you and deliver your dishes shortly after you pay and receive a text message saying your order has been lodged.
Roti, served with two curry dips and a splat of spicy sambal, are still the drawcard. Roti canai ($9) pinched into a fluffy little pile is hard to beat; though if you’re hungry, the egg protein hit in roti telur ($10) can be inviting. Both are good foils for the spicy gravy in the slow-cooked kari kambing ($22), a red curry with tender hunks of lamb. A pile of red-dusted ayam berempah ($21) completes our meal. The bite-sized chicken pieces, left on the bone, have a good hit of chilli mingling with cassia, curry leaves, lemongrass, ginger, turmeric and garlic.
While the cultural tourists next to us loudly bemoan the lack of wine, I happily slurp a limau ais ($5)—a gentle blend of fresh lime and sugar syrup served over ice—grateful this place hasn’t succumbed to higher prices and a hipster-friendly makeover.
The roti is definitely the highlight! Chicken satay is something you have to try as well. The dessert however was overly sweet. I will be back for more
Mamak's ordering system was streamlined and online. You get served extremely quickly and there are so many options.
The food itself was amazing. We loved the roti and all the types of curries. Never having Malaysian food before, this was a great first experience and we still think about going back to eat here to this day.
Chicken satay was so delicious. The taste was very close to the food I had in Malaysia so its the most authentic Malaysian place ive been to. I was seated in the corner near the entrance and the table was quite small for what I ordered. Also felt a bit uncomfortable some time when so many people walked by.
